Season Outlook With a dozen freshmen on the Missouri State field hockey roster, one thing’s for sure. These future leaders away from the turf will be tasked with immediately taking ownership of the field hockey program and assuming an out-front role on their team. “There’s so many freshmen, and many of them will be starting, so we want them to be thinking about being in a leadership role,” assistant coach Erika Dombkowski said. “That will be expected of them right off the bat, so they really need to step up to the plate at day one.” While the newcomers may be the new kids on the block at Missouri State, some will bring with them championship ties from their prep careers. There’s midfielder Sydney Richelieu and defender Jackie Eskue, teammates on a Fallbrook High School (Fallbrook, Calif.) squad that won the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division I crown in 2011 en route to a No. 15 national ranking at year’s end. Meanwhile, the Division II CIF title went to Serra

High School in San Diego, where defender Liz Young and midfielder/ forward Dominique Leyva led the Conquistadors to glory. So there’s a winning pedigree in place among the team’s freshmen as secondyear head coach Gabby Gomez Sosa looks to return the squad to glory. Expectations are high and the team is confident they’ll make a run for a MAC championship, Dombkowski said, noting that the newcomers and returners communicated well in preseason on the way to becoming a close-knit team. The freshmen will join key returners including forward Hillary Lawless and 2011 All-MAC Second-Team forward Reiann Stoute. Competition for playing time will be intense, Dombkowski said. “All of the freshmen have come in and said they want to blow everybody out of the water, and all of the returners say they want to compete, but take the newcom-

ers under their wings as well,” she said. That’s a team. A team full of players who will be ready to lead.

Newcomers Missouri State’s midline should be well-stocked for the future, as five of the team’s 12 freshmen are listed as midfielders. Charlie Redhead is expected to play immediately at center mid and become a playmaker for the Bears. A native of Norfolk, England, Redhead has high-level field hockey experience, which should help shorten her learning curve in the college game.

Olivia Nicotera is another fresh face on the team’s midline. Nicotera is a great decision maker, Dombkowski said, noting that the Riverbend High alumna brings enthusiasm and a great attitude to the field. Sydney Richelieu will bring quickness and leadership experience from being a captain of her Fallbrook High squad. She’ll be joined by fellow Californian Dominique Leyva, who will be looked upon to become a goalscoring threat in addition to distributing the ball to her teammates. Meanwhile, Brynne Satre came to camp early and got a head start on preparing for the 2012 season. She’ll likely play forward, Dombkowski said. Three newcomers – Holly Scherer, Kimberleigh Eng and Patrice Ahl – will help form the core of MSU’s forwards and midfielders. Scherer is especially intriguing. A three-year captain during her prep career, Scherer is a candidate to take home the MAC Freshman of the Year award, Dombkowski said, adding that she expects Scherer to become a scoring machine. The Bears will also look to Eng to put the ball in the net, as the 5-foot-5 native of Virginia led her high school team in scoring with 14 goals. Ahl, whose team won a bronze medal at the Senior National Tournament in Canada, is a great trapper on the corners and has fantastic stick skills, Dombkowski said. All four freshman backs hail from the U.S. coasts. East Coast native Jessi Pope joins the Bears from Brooke Point High in Stafford, Va. and brings a team-first attitude to the squad. One of her greatest attributes is her patience

Laura Tavares and composure, Dombkowski said. Conversely, Liz Young, Jackie Eskue and Leah Reitmayer hail from California. Young’s instincts work to her advantage, Dombkowski said, as she knows when to carry the ball outside then cut off her opponent. Eskue and Reitmayer will compete for playing time and will be tasked with helping the squad’s goalkeepers direct the defense.

Medlock, a senior, appeared in 18 games and picked up two assists in 2011.

With the departure of 2011 AllMAC First-Teamer Casey Bayliss, Missouri State will look to junior Hillary Lawless to continue to be a goal-scorer. Lawless was MSU’s second-leading scorer in 2011, as the 5-foot-3 native of St. Louis picked up 10 goals. the likely starter after starting 12 games a year ago and finishing the season ranked 30th in the nation with 5.6 saves per game. “We’re looking at Andrea to take that leadership role and we’re hoping she’ll be our full-time starter,” Dombkowski said. “We want a full-time goalkeeper because we don’t want to break the composure of the defense.” Junior Katie Mulloy will provide competition for Bain. Mulloy appeared in 11 games in 2011, and picked up 43 saves with a .632 saves percentage. Bain and Mulloy helped the Bears rank 21st in the country in saves per game with 7.42. The duo will push each other to greater heights, Dombkowski said. “When they’re in practice together, they really fight for that position,” she said. “I think either way we’ll be good because they’re going to make each other better.”

The Schedule The Bears will play a schedule that includes games against 2011 NCAA Tournament qualifiers Iowa, Ohio State, and Ohio, the 2011 MAC regular season and tournament champion. MSU will open the 2012 campaign on the road with a monthlong trek of away and neutral-site games. Gomez Sosa’s squad will start with a road match against

the Virginia Commonwealth Rams in Richmond, Va. A week later, the Bears will take on a pair of Big 10 foes with an Aug. 31 date at Indiana and a visit to Iowa two days later. Both the Hoosiers and Hawkeyes finished above .500 a year ago, and Iowa lost to eventual NCAA champion Maryland in its first-round tournament draw. MSU will play a pair of games in St. Louis in early September, first against the Saint Louis Billikens, then a neutral-site contest against Georgetown. The Bears will return to Iowa City, Iowa and Bloomington, Ind. to play Albany and California, respectively, a week later. Road matches against Ball State and Ohio State on Sept. 22 and 23 round out the team’s first month. The remainder of the schedule features four home games. MSU will open at home on Sept. 29 with a noon match against Miami (Ohio) before departing for St. Louis to play Liberty the next day. The team will take a week to prepare for its Oct. 6 home date against Central Michigan, the first of three-straight conference dates that also includes a game at Ohio and a home contest against Kent State. The Bears will close the season with a pair of non-conference games. They’ll take on Northwestern on the road on Oct. 21 before closing the regular season with a home match against Saint Louis on Oct. 24. The MAC Championships will be hosted by Miami (Ohio) Nov. 2-3. The tournament is now a fourteam, single round-robin event, meaning only the top four squads in the standings will square off for the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Gabby Gomez Sosa Head Coach

Gabby Gomez Sosa took over the head coaching duties of the Missouri State field hockey program effective January 2011, making her the program’s sixth head coach in its 40-year history. In her first season as the Bears’ head coach, Gomez Sosa produced three AllMid-American Conference players and three player of the week honors. Gomez Sosa also coached the team to the most regular season wins (7) since 2004. During the 2011 season, Gomez Sosa had three athletes ranked in the conference top ten in shots per game, points per game, and goals per game. She also had two athletes ranked in the conference top ten in assists per game, defensive saves, saves, goals against average, and save percentage. Two of Gomez Sosa’s athletes led their statistical category (points per game and defensive saves) in conference. Her defensive squad finished seventh in the nation in defensive saves (13), with Reiann Stoute kicking in eight of her own to rank her fourth nationally. Under Gomez Sosa’s guidance, Casey Bayliss finished the season 15th in the nation in points per game and 13th in goals per game. The 2005 graduate of Missouri State had been an assistant on the Bears staff during the 2009 and 2010 seasons under Dawn Callahan. In her two seasons as an assistant on the Bears’ coaching staff, she helped coach three players to AllMAC recognition and two top-eight goal scorers in the conference. The team also improved their overall and MAC win totals from 2009 to

2010. When Gomez Sosa completed her MSU playing career in 2004, she was one of the most highly-decorated field hockey athletes in school history. She was named to the NorPac All-Conference team all four seasons and won the conference’s Rookie of the Year Award in 2001. From 2002-04, she was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-West Region team, and her senior season she became the first Bear honored on the NFHCA All-America Team (third team). Gomez Sosa was a two-time team captain and remains the only Missouri State player ever to receive the distinction from the NFHCA. Throughout her career, she played just as well in the postseason as she did in the regular season. She was named the NorPac Tournament Most Valuable Player in 2003 and made the All-Tournament team in 2003 and 2004. She was also picked as Missouri State Most Valuable Player during her senior season. When Gomez Sosa left the Bears, she left her name littered throughout the history books. Her 55 career points are sixth on the Bears alltime list, while her 15 assists place her eighth. As a senior, Gomez Sosa posted eight assists, the eighthhighest single-season total in Bear

history. She also scored 20 goals in her four years playing under Dawn Callahan, earning 67 starts in 71 matches. In December 2005, she earned her bachelor’s in Spanish Education from Missouri State and has been active in the classroom ever since. She has taught at Ozark and Parkview High Schools locally before moving to Germantown, Pa., in 2006 where she was as a full-time Spanish teacher and assistant soccer coach at Delaware Valley Charter High School. Gomez Sosa was born in Uruguay and moved to Montreal when she was 10 years old. She is fluent in Spanish, French and English. Gomez Sosa resides in Springfield with her husband Tony Piazza, a former MSU baseball player, and their son, Julian. Gomez Sosa earned her USA Field Hockey Level II Coaching Certification, the second highest certification in USA Field Hockey, just under the international level, in 2012. She graduated from the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy in 2012.

Erika Dombkowski Assistant Coach

In Erika Dombkowski’s first season as the Bears’ assistant field hockey coach, she helped produce a team with the most wins (7) since the 2004 season and three All-MidAmerican Conference players. Dombkowski had an immediate impact on MSU’s goalkeepers, finishing the season with both goalies ranked in the top ten in the conference. Dombkowski coached Bears’ goalkeeper Andrea Bain to finish 30th in the nation in saves per game (5.6). As a team, MSU fi nished 21st in the nation in saves per game. Dombkowski’s coaching also produced a conference defensive player of the week honor for Bain. Dombkowski also assisted the Bears’ defense, which finished seventh in the nation in defensive saves (13), and Reainn Stoute ranked fourth in the nation individually in defensive saves with eight. Dombkowski, now in her second season at MSU, came to Missouri State after one year as an assistant at Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) following her successful playing career at Oneonta (N. Y.) State College. Working primarily with the goalkeepers and defenders at Vassar last season, Dombkowski helped lead the Brewers (3-14) to their first Betty Richey Tournament championship in 15 years. On the season, their goalies combined for a solid .704 save percentage while allowing 3.19 goals per game. They also produced one Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week award. Dombkowski’s Brewers had the eighth-highest GPA (3.46) of any Division III field hockey team last season and was honored

as a 2010 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA National Academic Team. Dombkowski was the starting goalkeeper in 56 of the team’s 57 games during her three seasons at Oneonta State, where she compiled a 25-30 career record with six shutouts. She graduated with some impressive statistics, including a career 2.23 goals against average and a .763 cumulative save percentage. Dombkowski was reliable for the Red Dragons. In her three seasons there, she played 3,790:20 of a possible 4,035:34 minutes (93.9%) in the cage. She logged every minute of the 2006 season (1,339:29). Her finest season came in 2007 when she led Oneonta State to a 10-9 overall record on the strength of a career-best 2.04 goals against average. She started all 19 games and saved .758 percent of shots on her way to three shutouts. In 2008, her 7.67 saves per game ranked 40th in the nation. In 2006, she had 20 saves in a 2-1 win over Ithaca (10/11), which was the 38th-highest single game total in Division III that season. She spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons playing full time for the Wildcats of the North East Field Hockey Association, an adult club league in New York, N.Y., with whom she played for part time during the 2006-08 seasons. A 2008 team captain, Domb-

kowski graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Art, while minoring in art history. The Carmel, N.Y., native also gained coaching experience with the 2011 USA Field Hockey Futures team and as an instructor for the Brewster field hockey camp in 2005. She has

played for a variety of club teams in the New York area, both women’s and co-ed. Dombkowski earned her USA Field Hockey Level II Coaching Certification, the second highest certification in USA Field Hockey, just under the international level, in 2012. Bain finished the season with one shutout and combined with fellow goalkeeper Katie Mulloy to rank 21st in the nation in saves per game (7.42). Bain was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week (11/1) ... Bain was a force to be reckoned with in the Bears’ 2-0 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday (Oct. 29). The match was Missouri State’s first shutout of the season and also secured the most wins in a season for the Bears since 2004 ... Bain stopped Miami (Ohio) in its tracks with six saves in the match and her first career shutout at Missouri State ... The Victoria, British Columbia native followed up her superb performance with seven saves in Missouri State’s win over Ball State on Oct. 30 ... Bain was also an All-MAC Academic Honorable mention during the 2011 season.

Season In Review Missouri State took another stride toward .500 in 2011, as the field hockey squad finished with a 7-12 record, two more wins than it claimed in 2010. In head coach Gabby Gomez Sosa’s first season at the helm, the Bears played a challenging schedule that included three matches against eventual NCAA Tournament qualifiers Iowa and Ohio. MSU made strides offensively, increasing its scoring average by 22 percent. However, the defense took a step back, as the squad saw its goals against average increase by 26 percent. Despite an extended losing streak in the middle of the season, the Bears persevered and rocked a late-season surge of wins that set them up well for the 2012 campaign.

The Calm Before The Storm Missouri State opened the 2011 season with a victory over Sacred Heart in a high-scoring match. The Bears prevailed 8-4 as senior forward Casey Bayliss recorded a hat trick and was credited with assists on two other goals. Forwards Hillary Lawless and Sarah Cusick scored two goals apiece. Goalkeepers Andrea Bain and Katie Mulloy teamed up to help the MSU defense hold Sacred Heart at an arm’s length. The Bears suffered their first loss of the season the next day as they were defeated 3-2 by the Saint Louis Billikens. After falling behind 3-1 in

Casey Bayliss the first half, Missouri State pitched a shutout in the second stanza by allowing SLU only two shots. Casey Bayliss scored her fourth goal in two games to cut the deficit to 3-2, but MSU got no closer and fell to 1-1. Penalty corners proved to be Missouri State’s undoing in its next game, a 4-1 loss at Indiana. The Hoosiers poured in all four of their goals off penalty corners. Freshman Sarah Bradley had MSU’s only three shots on goal and scored once, an unassisted point into the left corner of the cage. Indiana’s 16 shots on goal helped make all the difference. Missouri State suffered its first shutout loss in a road match at Louisville. The Cardinals blanked the Bears 4-0 and had only four shots on goal. Reiann Stoute led the defense with a couple of defensive saves, while Sarah Bradley paced the Bears’ offensive attack for the second week in-a-row by record-

ing three of the team’s four shots on goal. Missouri State put a stop to its three-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over Appalachian State. Bradley continued her offensive onslaught by scoring off a direct shot from a penalty corner 12 minutes into the first half. The game was tied 1-1 at the half. Appalachian State scored the go-ahead goal early in the second half, but MSU answered when Bradley knotted it at 2 off another penalty corner, this time with an assist from Stoute. A subsequent goal by Hillary Lawless proved to be the difference in the contest. The Bears picked up a victory in their home opener, a 3-1 triumph over Saint Louis on Sept. 15. Bayliss and Lawless teamed up on two goals, as Bayliss put the ball in the net twice on assists by Lawless. MSU struck quickly, as Bayliss’ first goal came just two minutes into

play. Bradley found the back of the net yet again and the Missouri State defense held the Billikens to just two shots on goal for the match.

A Parade Of Losses Gomez Sosa’s squad next traveled to Iowa City to take on Iowa. The Bears scored first early in the match when Bayliss found the back of the cage off an assist from Catrina Schmidt. However, it would be all Hawkeyes the rest of the way, as the host team poured in five unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead into the half. The visiting Bears saw their deficit extend to 8-1 before Bradley temporarily stopped the bleeding with a goal to make the score 8-2. Iowa would score two more goals to bring the final to 10-2. MSU returned home less than a week later to open its conference schedule with a game against Kent State. With a 5-3 victory, the Golden Flashes sent the Bears to their second-straight loss. The visitors came out of the gates quickly with a high-arching goal early in the first half. After a score from Lawless knotted the score at 1-all, Kent State picked up four unanswered goals and held on despite secondhalf goals from Bradley and Stoute. The Bears suffered another loss a couple of days later when they fell to eventual MAC champion Ohio by a 5-1 score. the board early with a goal-scoring strike off an assist from Marisa Hendel. However, the Bobcats took a 2-1 lead into the break and scored once more early in the second half. A penalty corner goal by Bayliss was waved off, and Ohio knocked in two more scores late. A week later, the Bears and Central Michigan decided, “Let’s play two!” as MSU and the Chippewas competed on back-to-back days. However, the trip to Mt. Pleasant was anything but pleasant for Missouri State, as Central Michigan emerged victorious in both games. In the first game, Central Michigan took home a shutout victory by a 4-0 score. The Bears placed eight shots on goal, five of which came from Bayliss. Game two was a hard-fought scoreless battle for most of the first half before the Chippewas took a 1-0 lead on a penalty stroke going into halftime. After spotting Cen-

tral Michigan two more goals, Lawless scored off an assist from Bradley to cut the deficit to 3-1. Central Michigan closed the game with another pair of second-half goals to make the final margin 5-1. The Bears continued their mid-season spiral with a 3-2 road loss to Miami (Ohio), marking their fifth-straight conference defeat. Missouri State had a strong start as Stoute knocked in a shot from the top of the circle 15 minutes into play. However, two Miami goals in the 29th and 32nd minute gave the Bobcats a 2-1 lead at the break. The Bears traded scores with Miami in the second half, giving the host squad the victory. Missouri State lost again by a 3-2 score the next day at Ball State. The Bears once again struck first on Stoute’s second goal in two days off an assist from Laura Tavares. MSU trailed 2-1 at halftime for the second day in a row. A goal by Bayliss tied things up at 2, but Ball State’s goal in the 63rd minute proved to be the difference-maker in the contest. The squad lost its eighth game ina-row in a 3-0 defeat to Ohio, who swept the season series between the two teams. Stoute and Kelsey Lomax picked up defensive saves, but Ohio scored three goals off penalty corners. The loss left MSU at 3-11 overall and a conference record of 0-7, but the Bears showed a great deal of improvement in the season’s final stage.

A Strong Finish Missouri State avenged its earlier loss to Kent State with a 3-1 road win over the Golden Flashes. The Bears continued to strike early as Lawless capitalized on a Kent State turnover and scored her seventh goal of the season. MSU held onto that 1-0 lead going into the second half. Two second-half goals from Bayliss gave the Bears a 3-0 lead. That was more than enough for goalkeeper Andrea Bain, who racked up five saves. MSU took a one-game break from MAC competition and made it count with a 2-1 win over the Lindenwood Lions in St. Charles, Mo. In the 21st minute of play, the Bears got on the board on a goal by Lawless, who was assisted by Bayliss. Laura Tavares gave the Bears a 2-0 lead in the 55th minute, and the defense did the rest, limiting Lindenwood to just one goal. The Bears returned home on Oct. 29 and did so in shutout fashion, defeating Miami (Ohio) 2-0. Bradley got MSU on the scoreboard in the 17th minute with a goal assisted by fellow freshman Abbey Heller. Lawless made the score 2-0 by scoring for the third-straight game. Bain followed up with another strong performance with a six-save outing. Missouri State emerged victorious the next day as well, as it defeated Ball State 4-3 on Senior Day at Plaster Field.

Lawless took a pass from senior Lori Sinclair and slammed home her 10th goal of the season in the 16th minute of play to give MSU the early advantage. After Ball State answered with the game-tying goal eight minutes later, Bayliss scored the first of her three goals that day to put the Bears ahead 2-1 at halftime. Bayliss answered Ball State again in the second half with two more goals to claim her second hat trick of the season. The Bears wrapped up the regular-season slate with a four-game winning streak, which vaulted them to 7-11-0 overall and 4-6-0 in MAC play. Missouri State rode that momentum into the MAC postseason tournament in Athens, Ohio. The Bearsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; stay was short-lived, as Central Michigan defeated MSU 3-1 in the quarterfinals. The Bears stayed right with the Chippewas in the first half, as a Bayliss score answered two Central Michigan goals in the second half. However, a Central Michigan goal in the 64th

minute knocked the Bears out of the game and ended their season.

Postseason Honors The Bears claimed a slew of postseason honors from the MAC. Bayliss earned a spot on the AllMAC First Team by recording seven goals in conference play and 14 overall. Sarah Bradley and Reiann Stoute were on the All-MAC Second Team. Bradley finished ninth in the conference in assists per game and shots per game, while Stoute led the league in defensive saves, scored three goals and recorded two assists. The squad excelled academically as well and was recognized for its achievements in the classroom. Bayliss and Stoute earned spots on the Academic All-MAC team, while Andrea Bain, Kelsey Lomax, Ramie Masters, Chelsey Medlock, Katie Mulloy, Catrina Schmidt, Lori Sinclair and Laura Tavares earned Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention honors.

The 2011 Missouri State Softball team brought home its first MVC Tournament championship in five years last spring, claiming the title with four victories on its home field at Killian Stadium. FACILITIES

JQH Arena has been the home of the Missouri State Bears basketball teams since its official opening in November 2008. The world-class arena seats more than 11,000 and has a state-of-the-art video scoreboard. Hotel developer John Q. Hammons made JQH Arena possible with a donation of $30 million.

John Q. Hammons Student Center is the home of the MSU volleyball and swimming teams, which has a main arena capacity of 4,646 permanent reserved seats.

Turner Family Practice Court, located in the east gym of Hammons Student Center, provides the Missouri State men’s and women’s basketball programs expanded options for practice schedules. The hardwood floor brings with it the history of the Bear’s program, as it was in use in HSC’s main arena from 1985 until February of 2006.

Plaster Strength Center is one of the largest of its kind in the Missouri Valley Conference. Strength coach Terry Sauerbry and his staff supervise the free weight-based facility.

The Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex is the home of Missouri State football, track and field, soccer and field hockey teams. The 16,300-seat complex includes a FieldTurf playing surface and an eight-lane synthetic all-weather track surface. The facility’s video board adds to any athletics experience with replays, graphics and live statistics. The complex also includes indoor amenities such as racquetball courts, locker rooms, five classrooms and a fitness center.

Hammons Field is located just blocks from the Missouri State campus. The 8,000 seat, natural grass stadium includes 28 luxury suites, five party decks, six food and beverage outlets, a souvenir shop and a club lounge. Financed by MSU alumnus John Q. Killian Softball Stadium opened in March 2009 as the new home to the Missouri State softball team. Operated by the Springfield-Greene County Park Board, the East Springfield venue offers seating for up to 1,200 spectators and served as host of the 2011 MVC Softball Championship.

The Missouri State Cross Country Facility was unveiled as the new home course for MSU at Springfield Underground in 2007. The MSU Cross Country Facility will host the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship for the second time in four years this November.

SPORTS MEDICINE Athletic Medical and Rehabilitation Services The Missouri State Athletic Medical and Rehabilitation Services staff has more than 90 years combined experience in athletic training. Included are director Jim Penkalski; assistant director Shannon Derricks; and athletic trainers Tyler Landgraf, Amy Luke and Steve Sawchak. All are certified by the National Athletic Trainerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Association and licensed by the Missouri State Board of Healing Arts. Three intern athletic trainers join the fulltime staff, along with a host of athletic training students who work with studentathletes under the supervision of staff members. Another essential asset to MSU student-athletes is the involvement of physicians and medical personnel from the community and Missouri Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Taylor Health and Wellness Center. Brian Mahaffey, Richard Seagrave and Victor Wilson serve as team physicians, attending to the medical needs of over 350 Missouri State student-athletes.

Strength and Conditioning Physical development of more than 350 student-athletes to increase athletic performance, decrease the chance or severity of injury and enhance sportspecific athletics development are the goals of Missouri State Strength and Conditioning. Head strength coach Terry Sauerbry supervises the 7,200-square-foot Plaster Strength Center that is utilized by all 16 sports. Sauerbry and his staff guide the student-athletes through programs designed to improve individual skills and overall team performance. The programs integrate all phases of development, including free weights, multi-joint exercises, plyometrics, conditioning, flexibility, speed and nutrition. The strength and conditioning staff works with coaches and Athletic Medical and Rehabilitation Services to develop programs suited for each sport and its student-athletes. Areas of concern in each participant are identified and a strength program is put in place to address all items with the ultimate goal of improving competitive performance.

Libraries The Missouri State University Library System is composed of four libraries: the Duane G. Meyer Library, the Music Library and the Greenwood Laboratory School Library (all in Springfield), and the Paul G. Evens Library of Fruit Science (Mountain Grove). The Meyer Library offers more than two million books and printed materials. The library contains more than 944,000 state and federal government documents and is the only United Nations document depository in the state. Downtown presence The Springfield campus has several buildings located in the city’s historic downtown. They include the Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center, the Park Central Office Building, the Jim D. Morris Center for Continuing Education and the Great Southern Building. The University also leases the Levy/Wolf Building on Park Central Square for some offices and outreach programs.

Located in the state’s third largest city, Missouri State is within a 500mile radius of nearly 50 percent of the U.S. population. In addition to the main campus in Springfield, the Missouri State system is comprised of a two-year branch campus in West Plains, a research campus in Mountain Grove and an extended campus that coordinates telecommunicationbased delivery of distance education among and by the three campuses. IDEA Commons The Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship and Art Commons is a geographic area in downtown Springfield that includes several Missouri State facilities: Brick City (an Art and Design department building) and the Roy Blunt Jordan Valley Innovation Center (a scientific research center). The IDEA Commons is an urban research park that will also include privately owned residential, retail and entertainment facilities. Robert W. Plaster Student Union The PSU is the hub of the campus community. It has a post office, bank, convenience store, movie theater, bowling alley, study areas and many dining options. PSU is home to many student groups and University organizations.

Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts This 2,200-seat, multipurpose performance facility brings to campus touring Broadway musical productions, entertainment performances and an emerging concert artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recital series. It is the home of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra.

The components of the public affairs mission are ethical leadership, cultural competence and community engagement. The Wichita, Kan., native picked up second-team Academic All-America recognition in 2010, before being selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Interim President Fourth Year at Missouri State

n June 27, 2011, Clifton M. “Clif” Smart, III was named interim president of the university. Smart had been General Counsel at Missouri State since Dec. 1, 2007. Over the previous three-and-a-half years at Missouri State, Smart had provided legal counsel to the Board, president, faculty, staff and administrators. He had also been involved in many campus-wide initiatives, including leading the university response to the state auditor’s report on Missouri State; serving on the JQH Arena Task Force; developing a comprehensive on-line policy library for the university; and chairing or serving on a variety of searches: vice president for diversity and inclusion, chief financial officer (twice), director of admissions, director of human resources and men’s basketball coach. Smart joined The Strong Law Firm in 1992. He became a shareholder in the firm in 1995 and vice president in 1998. During his 15 years at the firm, Smart’s practice consisted primarily of representing individuals and entities in catastrophic injury, medical malpractice and commercial cases. Smart was selected to the panel of three applicants submitted to the governor for the vacant Missouri Supreme Court positions in 2002 and 2004. In February 2009, he was elected for a five-year term as one of the two lawyer members of the 31st Circuit Judicial Commission. Smart was listed in Best Lawyers in America for 2007-08 in the fields of product liability, personal injury and professional negligence. Prior to joining The Strong Law Firm, Smart worked for two years with the firm of Wright, Lindsey & Jennings in Little Rock, Ark. From 1986-90, he was with the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. in Ft. Knox, Ky. Smart graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1979 where he was valedictorian. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane University in 1983, graduating Summa Cum Laude. In 1986, he graduated with his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law, receiving the second highest GPA (3.95) in school history. While in law school, he received the Leflar Scholarship, was an Oxford Scholar and was on the Law Review. Smart and his wife, Gail, have two sons: Murray, a student at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, and Jim, a student at Hamilton College in New York.

Director of Athletics Third Year at Missouri State

issouri State University’s search for its new director of athletics concluded May 28, 2009, with the introduction of Kyle Moats as the University’s 10th A.D. Moats came to the University after serving as associate athletics director for national marketing at the University of Louisville since 2005. Moats began his duties at Missouri State in July 2009, replacing Bill Rowe, who retired after spending 27 years as Missouri State’s top athletics administrator and more than a half century at the university as a student, coach and administrator. In a busy first year on the job, Moats wasted little time in laying groundwork for the future of Missouri State Athletics. From day one he emphasized the importance of fostering a strategic vision in the current landscape of intercollegiate athletics by involving all corners of the campus community in developing a long-range plan for the MSU Athletics. Moats played a key role in Missouri State’s new partnership with Nelligan Sports Marketing (NSM), announced in February 2010. The agreement will result in the outsourcing of the departments’ marketing and corporate sales operations while maximizing revenue potential for MSU Athletics. Additionally, Moats was instrumental in MSU’s negotiations for a new multi-year television contract with KY3, Inc. Year two for Moats in Springfield saw Missouri State finish second in the 2010-11 MVC All-Sports Trophy standings--its best finish in five years. Conference titles by men’s basketball, women’s swimming and softball, as well as postseason tournament berths for both MSU basketball programs highighted the Bears’ year. In 2011-12, Moats’ third year at the helm, Missouri State enjoyed its finest campaign in nearly a decade, capturing the Missouri Valley Conference AllSports Trophy for just the fourth time. The Bears won Valley titles in women’s swimming and diving, women’s indoor track and field, women’s basketball and women’s golf this year along with a co-championship in men’s soccer. Additionally, four MSU teams advanced to postseason play, including NCAA Tournament appearances for the Bears’ volleyball, women’s golf and baseball programs. Prior to his arrival in Springfield, Moats spent four years as associate athletics director for national marketing at Louisville. In that capacity, he coordinated the Cardinals’ efforts in national awareness, marketing, branding and group ticket sales. He also worked closely with Nelligan, which manages the exclusive marketing rights for Cardinal Athletics. Moats oversaw the Louisville band and spirit squads as the liaison with student government and student spirit groups. Prior to joining the Louisville staff, Moats served as senior associate athletic director for two years at Marquette University, where he oversaw the Golden Eagles’ Blue and Gold Fund, media relations, ticket operations, special events, licensing, radio, television, marketing and promotions and sponsorships with NSM. He also worked 14 years in the University of Kentucky athletics department, including his last three there as associate athletics director for marketing (2000-02). A native of Dixon, Ill., Moats is a 1988 graduate of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. Moats was a three-year letterwinner in golf and a student assistant basketball coach for the Cougars from 1985-88. He earned a master’s degree in sports management from the University of Kentucky in 2001. Moats and his wife, Leeann, have two children, Kirk and Lauren.

Senior Associate Director of Athletics/ Senior Woman Administrator 10th Year at Missouri State

Casey Hunt enters her fifth full year as associate director of athletics and her 10th year overall at Missouri State. Hunt oversees the operations of several of the institution’s 16 men’s and women’s sports programs. In addition, she has oversight of the Bears’ compliance, athletic training and strength and conditioning programs and serves as the primary personnel administrator for intercollegiate athletics. Hunt joined the MSU staff in March 2003 as assistant director of athletics for compliance, a post in which she served until succeeding Darlene Bailey as associate athletics director in September of 2006. A native of Nanticoke, Pa., Hunt came to MSU from Coastal Carolina University, where she had been assistant athletics director for compliance since 1998. At Coastal Carolina, Hunt’s responsibilities included overseeing budgets for some of the school’s 17 sports, working in game operations, supervising the hosting of conference championships and directing summer sports camps. She was honored as the Big South Compliance Director of the Year in 2000. Hunt graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 1994 and earned a master’s degree from the University of Connecticut in 1996. She served one year as an intern in the Syracuse University athletics compliance office and spent two years in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference compliance section. A four-year starter in women’s basketball at St. Bonaventure, Hunt was inducted into the school’s athletics hall of fame in February 2007. Additionally, she was inducted into the Luzerne County (Pa.) Sports Hall of Fame in August 2010. The former Casey Comoroski married Clint Hunt in August 2012.

Assistant Director of Athletics for Academics and Student Services First Year at Missouri State

Monica Jones begins her first year with Missouri State after being selected as the department’s new assistant director of athletics for academics and student services in late June. A 1995 graduate of the University of Arkansas, Jones comes to MSU after serving as interim director of student-athlete development at her alma mater. She had been assisting with the university’s student development operations, after serving as associate director of Arkansas’ student-athlete academic support and achievement since December 2008. Previously, Jones spent 2002-08 at the University of Louisville working first as assistant director of campus life and later as assistant director for advising and student support services. She began her professional career at Arkansas in 1997 as an athletic academic counselor and advanced to academic advisor for the College of Education and Health Professions in July 2000. Before moving to Louisville in December 2002, she also served as the director of multicultural student services at Arkansas. Jones is a native of Malvern, Ark., and is part of the 2011-13 class for the NACADA Emerging Leaders program and earned her master’s degree in counseling from Arkansas in 1999. She will complete her Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership and Organizational Development from the University of Louisville in August 2013.

Missouri State alumnus Rick Kindhart is in his fifth year directing MSU’s athletics communications efforts and his fourth as assistant director of athletics. In addition to overseeing the day-to-day operations of the department, he is the primary contact for MSU football and men’s basketball. During his tenure at MSU, Kindhart has served on the NCAA SelfStudy Committee, University Marketing Council and is part of the Greater Springfield Public Relations Advisory Committee. During his 20 years in the sports information profession, he has earned a number of national writing and publication awards, including a CoSIDA second in the nation award in 2012 for the Missouri State men’s basketball game programs and a third in nation honor for the same MSU publication in 2010. He has also worked on the media relations teams for several national and regional events, including the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball St. Louis Regional, 2006 Final Four and 1995 Freestyle Wrestling World Championships in Atlanta. A 1991 honors graduate of MSU, Kindhart joined the MSU staff in July 2008 after serving as assistant executive director for communications for the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) for a total of 11 years. He received his master’s degree in 1993 from Southeast Missouri State, where he was assistant SID from 1991-93. From 1993-96, he was sports information director at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss. He and his wife, Christy, have two children, Matt and Shelby.

Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance Fifth Year at Missouri State

Kyle Yates begins his fifth year coordinating the Bears’ compliance efforts after joining the Missouri State athletics staff in July 2008. Yates came to MSU after spending three years as assistant director of athletics compliance at TCU. His duties included monitoring the activity of coaches and staff for NCAA rules compliance, as well as the oversight of maintenance on the TCU athletics compliance web site. At Missouri State, Yates is responsible for the organization and overall administration of the MSU athletic department’s NCAA compliance program, including the certification of eligibility and coordination of financial aid for student-athletes. He is also charged with monitoring coaches’ activities relative to rules compliance, and administering educational measures for athletics staff members. Yates also oversees the operations of the Bears’ baseball, women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s golf programs. A 2004 graduate of Texas A&M, Yates completed his MBA from TCU in 2007.

Director of JQH Arena/HSC/PSC 10th Year at Missouri State

Keith Boaz enters his seventh year as director of Missouri State’s athletics facilities and his 10th year overall as a member of the MSU athletics staff. Boaz began his work at MSU in a dual role as assistant director of athletics development and marketing and assistant director of Hammons Student Center/Plaster Sports Complex in August 2003. A 2002 graduate of Missouri State, Boaz served as assistant director of operations at Jordan Valley Ice Park before joining the University’s staff. Boaz lives in Springfield with his wife, Bethany, their daughter, Averie, and son, Bradie.

Executive Director of Athletic and Entertainment Facilities 29th Year at Missouri State

Springfield native Randy Blackwood is entering his 29th year at Missouri State and his eighth as executive director of athletic and entertainment facilities. Blackwood earned his bachelor’s degree in speech and theatre from Missouri State in 1980. He has been involved in public assembly venue management since 1981, serving as the Fine Arts Auditorium Manager at the University of Georgia for four years before returning to his alma mater in 1984. During his tenure at MSU, Blackwood has been involved in the administration of Hammons Student Center and Plaster Sports Complex, including the last nine years as director of the two facilities. On July 1, 2005, he was named executive director of the University’s three top public venues, Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts, Hammons Student Center, and Plaster Sports Complex. In 2008, Blackwood added another on-campus facility to the list of venues he oversees with the opening of JQH Arena. Blackwood is a graduate of Leadership Springfield and a member of the International Association of Assembly Managers (IAAM). He is also a member of the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau. Blackwood resides in Springfield with his wife, Joyce Owen-Blackwood.

General Manager, Nelligan Sports Marketing, Inc. First Year at Missouri State

Frank Cuervo begins his first full year at Missouri State after being named general manager for Nelligan Sports Marketing, Inc., this past February. Cuervo leads the department’s sales efforts, overseeing a staff of two fulltime and several student employees with a focus on managing inventory and building client relations. Prior to his appointment with Nelligan, Cuervo spent a year and a half as the associate athletic director for external affairs at Southeast Missouri State. Cuervo joined the Redhawks administrative staff after serving as general manager and assistant vice president for ISP Sports, working with the Northern Illinois University Sports Network. Previously, he completed a three-year stint as assistant director of athletics for external operations at Indiana, where he managed the department’s marketing, ticketing and media relations efforts, as well as a stop at Missouri, where he served as director of marketing and promotions from 2001-05. Cuervo began his career in Division I athletics as a marketing coordinator at Ohio State in 1999, before moving on to Bowling Green State as assistant A.D. for marketing and sales. A 1997 graduate of the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and public relations and a minor in finance, Cuervo and his wife, Michelle, reside in Springfield.

Director of Athletic Development Second Year at Missouri State

One of the newest additions to the Missouri State athletics staff, Daniel Heflin was appointed to the post of director of athletic development last August and oversees the day-to-day operations of The Bears Fund, the MSU athletic department’s annual fundraising program. The Topeka, Kan., native came to Missouri State after a two-year stay as a development associate with the Shocker Athletic Scholarship Organization at fellow Missouri Valley Conference member Wichita State. At WSU, Heflin was responsible for the recruitment of new donors and the solicitation of sponsorships, while assisting with the coordination of several department fundraising events. After completing his master’s degree in sport administration from Wichita State this past spring, Heflin completed a brief stint as an account executive with AEG/Sprint Center in Kansas City. Prior to coming to Wichita State, Heflin served as an intern in the athletics development office at the University of Miami (Fla.). A first-team All-Peach Belt Conference and all-region selection in baseball as a student-athlete, Heflin earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Georgia College in 2008.

The Bears Fund The Bears Fund is the annual fund-raising program for Missouri State intercollegiate athletics that was established in 1981 in conjunction with the move of MSU athletics to NCAA Division I status. The fund’s name stands for “Building Excellence in Athletics through Recruiting and Scholarships,” and its impact on Missouri State Athletics has grown substantially throughout the 30 years of its existence. The 2011-12 drive netted over $2.3 million, marking the 24th year in a row in which total contributions to The Bears Fund have gone beyond $1 million. The fund is administered by the Missouri State University Foundation with additional input from coaching and administrative staff members in intercollegiate athletics. Contributors of $50 or more during each year are recognized as members at various giving levels in The Bears Fund, and as such, receive benefits within the athletic program, including game program recognition, online athletics newsletter, and parking and postseason ticket considerations. Bears Fund gifts may be earmarked for specific sports or general use and the money is used to enhance MSU athletics, particularly in the areas of scholarships and recruiting. Faculty Athletics Representative 24th Year at Missouri State

Dr. James Hutter begins his second year as faculty athletics representative and his 24th overall at Missouri State in 2012. Hutter took over the role of FAR last year after serving as vice-chair of MSU’s Intercollegiate Athletics Committee (IAC) in 2010-11. Hutter has been a faculty member for Missouri State’s William H. Darr School of Agriculture since completing his Ph.D. in agriculture education from the University of Minnesota in 1991. He has been recognized by MSU on several occasions with excellence in teaching and service awards and has served on numerous committees during his tenure at MSU, including a stint as chair of the University’s Professional Education Committee. Hutter graduated from Missouri State with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture education in 1984, then earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1987. A native of nearby Miller, Mo., Hutter and his wife, Leslie, reside in Republic with their two sets of twins, Tate and Hayes, and Gibbs and Tess.

General Manager, Collegiate Consulting First Year at Missouri State

After announcing its new ticketing partnership with Missouri State University in Februrary, Collegiate Consulting selected Tom Ladd as the general manager of ticket sales and service for the MSU athletics property. Ladd enters his new position after spending over 20 years in the radio broadcasting business. He began his broadcast career in Farmington, Mo., as a sports director and play-by-play announcer. His on-air play-byplay personality earned him several awards, including Missouri’s Best Play-by-Play Announcer in 1993 and 1994. He later served as operations manager, sales manager and station manager for Meyer Communications in Springfield and spent more than a decade (1995-2007) as the radio voice of the MSU Lady Bears. Ladd also spent time with the Springfield Cardinals as sales manager, helping the Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals average over capacity at Hammons Field every season under his direction. Ladd, who began his duties in late March, is originally from Marine, Ill. He attended McKendree College and Maryville University. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children, Holly and Skyler.

Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Seventh Year at Missouri State

Terry Sauerbry enters his seventh year as head strength and conditioning coach for the 16 MSU intercollegiate sports in 2012-13. Sauerbry began his current role at MSU in 2006 after serving in a similar capacity at the University of Rhode Island. He established the Rhode Island athletics strength and conditioning program where none had previously existed. Like MSU, Rhode Island is an NCAA FCS school. Prior to his tenure at Rhode Island, Sauerbry was associate strength coach at Temple University from 1998 to 2005. Previously, he was an assistant strength coach at the University of Maryland from 1997 through 1998. A native of Langhome, Pa., Sauerbry competed as a student-athlete on the football team at Maryland before graduating from the school in 1998 with a degree in kinesiological sciences. He also earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Temple in 2000.

Director of Athletic Medical and Rehabilitation Services 23rd Year at Missouri State

Jim Penkalski enters his fourth full year as director of Missouri State Athletic Medical and Rehabilitation Services and his 23rd year overall at MSU. Penkalski took over as head of the MSU athletic training program in March 2009 following the retirement of Ivan Milton. Penkalski oversees a staff of six full-time certified athletic trainers, three intern athletic trainers and a host of student trainers. A Broadview Heights, Ohio, native, Penkalski also fills the role of primary athletic trainer for baseball and has worked with a number of MSU athletic programs throughout his tenure. Penkalski competed in football and wrestling at Brecksville High before completing his undergraduate degree in physical education from Kent State in 1987. He then moved on to Northern Michigan for his graduate studies, completing his master’s degree in 1989. Penkalski and his wife, Missy, have three children, Amanda, Katelyn and Russell.
