Why teach abroad? A message from Melanie McCallon Seib, Director of Education Abroad: You are the grassroots. International education at Murray State began with a group of faculty who had a hunch that in Murray, KY we could educate students beyond the traditional classroom - and that students would want to participate. More than 40 years ago the first faculty-led study abroad program opened the door to the plethora of experiential education opportunities now available to faculty and students at Murray State. Those grassroots efforts have now grown to more than 17% of the Murray State graduating class having participated in study abroad, with 40 faculty teaching abroad every year.
Take a chance and dream for yourself about teaching abroad. All those course ideas you’ve had over the years, the content you haven’t had a chance to teach...education abroad is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Think about participating in an International Professional Development Program (IPD) first if you wish. The opportunities are endless.

Ever since I studied abroad in college myself, I knew I had to be part of study abroad in the future. I have looked forward to giving students an experience as amazing as the one I had! Taking students to Hungary Summer 2015 was wonderful--I could see their growth as soon as they set foot in the airport before we left. It was mainly students who hadn't traveled much before, and each experience, from the ATM and money conversion to visiting multiple hospitals and clinics, was eye-opening and life-changing.

Going abroad with my students was an incredible experience. Engineering is so concentrated on problem-solving that we rarely have time to connect personally with students. Spending 2 weeks abroad with my students allowed all of us to interact in so many different ways. Teach abroad with Murray State Signature Programs "Murray State Signature Program" is the term we use to categorize home grown Murray State FacultyLed programs that are built from the ground up by you, with academics at the heart of your program. Signature Programs are most often a spring break, winter break or summer program, ranging from 10 days to three weeks.
Create a New Program You may choose to create a new Murray State Signature Program with faculty/staff colleagues to co-teach or direct your program. When creating a new program you may decide to use a provider, who can make logistical arrangements for you, or you may build the program on your own if you have significant knowledge of the location and resources. Why a Recurring Signature Program? • • •
Most program arrangements are done by a Program Director, so no choosing housing or airfare or purchasing tickets on your own Ease of plugging your course into a proven & successful program Collaborate with other faculty across the curriculum to develop your course and program itinerary more fully

Use a Murray State-approved provider. When you use a provider, you negotiate the dates and logistics, but the provider takes care of all reservations and arrangements for you, with academics at the center. Build a program on your own. You make all of the decisions and all of the arrangements: program dates, location, and logistics.

Teach on the Semester in Regensburg, Germany Now in its 26th year, the Semester in Regensburg is Murray State University's longest-running facultyled education abroad program. Apply now for fall 2020! Academics: All Academic Fields Eligible • Teach Murray State courses with an infusion of local content • Faculty teach 2 courses • One or both courses can be university studies OR offer one university studies course and one major course in your area Logistics • Classes take place from October-December • Housing provided in furnished apartments in downtown Regensburg, October 1-December 31 • Program excursions are arranged by the Resident Director • Course excursions are required for each class and are organized with the Resident Director • Family can join you! Teaching on Experience Scotland Experience Scotland is a Murray State partner providing summer and semester opportunities for faculty to teach students from Murray State and other partner institutions. Dalkeith Palace, conveniently located near Edinburgh, provides classroom and housing facilities with easy access to local sites that bring your course to life. All academic fields are invited to apply. Family can accompany you on this program.
Summer Two ways: 1. Join the existing Experience Scotland summer program • Teach 1 course at a time in 4-week modules, with 2 modules to choose from or apply to teach for both modules (8 weeks total) • Propose the number of 3-credit courses you want to teach • Airfare, housing, and most meals provided • Stipend per class, based on student enrollment (currently $3,900 for 10 students) 2. Create a Signature Program with Experience Scotland Semester Three ways: 1. Fall Semester, taught in 3-week modules. You’ll teach one course at a time. 2. Fall Festivals Class Only. This runs as a 3-week course in August-September. You return to Murray State to complete your fall semester of teaching here. 3. Spring Semester, taught as full semester courses For options one and three, propose five 3-credit courses of which three will be chosen. Airfare, housing, and most meals provided. I chose CCSA because I didn’t have experience setting up tours, getting student discounts. I loved the idea of CCSA taking care of the logistics, the safety concerns, the budgeting of the trip. I could concentrate on my subject matter and the overall learning experience for my students. Plus there were other professors to meet, consult, learn from and spend evening meals with. Research opportunities developed by faculty are a fantastic way to reach high caliber students you are already mentoring. These programs are often much smaller, with as few as 2 or 3 students, to give faculty the opportunity to work closely with students for academic advancement in, for example, archival research.
International internship programs are much less common at Murray State, but we hope those of you with ideas and contacts abroad will consider working with us to establish regular, field-specific programs that are appropriate for your students.

IPD programs are an excellent way to gain experience abroad if you’ve never traveled abroad or want to explore a new location for research or future teaching. Each experience is distinct in its offering and goals, but all of our IPDs will allow you to examine your field from a unique perspective. We’ll encourage you to consider future application of your findings abroad to teaching at home, research, and a myriad of other opportunities and ways to become involved in internationalization efforts at Murray State.
