Why teach abroad? A message from Melanie McCallon Seib, Director of Education Abroad: International education at Murray State began with a group of faculty who had a hunch that in Murray, KY we could educate students beyond the traditional classroom - and that students would want to participate. More than 40 years ago the first faculty-led study abroad program opened the door to the plethora of experiential education opportunities now available to faculty and students at Murray State. Those grassroots efforts have now grown to more than 17% of the Murray State graduating class having participated in study abroad, with 40 faculty teaching abroad every year.

Take a chance and dream for yourself about teaching abroad. All those course ideas you’ve had over the years, the content you haven’t had a chance to teach...education abroad is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Think about participating in an International Professional Development Program (IPD) first if you wish. The opportunities are endless.

• Experience first-hand how your course content and location can partner for a future teach abroad • Inform content of your current courses • Open the door for new research avenues • Integrate international students into the classroom and cocurricular life after walking in their shoes • Develop education abroad programs for student study, research, or internships • Become more familiar with international travel

Traveling with students to London and Edinburgh has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my teaching career. It's exciting to watch their brains work in ways that don't happen in the classroom. At historical sites, students have hands-on experiences with historical times and events, bringing history to life in ways that only an in-person visit can provide. When students become teary-eyed when they see Big Ben for the first time, you have the satisfaction that you have helped create an experience they will remember the rest of their lives.

-Dr. Kathy Callahan, London Spring Break and Experience Scotland semester Department of History

Going abroad with my students was an incredible experience. Engineering is so concentrated on problem-solving that we rarely have time to connect personally with students. Spending 2 weeks abroad with my students allowed all of us to interact in so many different ways. Immersing ourselves in a different country and culture allowed all of us to get to know one another and I have brought back wonderful memories of my time abroad with my students.

-Dr. Jamie Rogers, Engineering in Germany Institute of Engineering

Study Abroad enriches every aspect of my academic life. It brings me new ideas for research topics, it informs my understanding of international students, it enriches my understanding of my students’ experiences and abilities and it broadens my subject matter whether that was the intent or not.

-Dr. Marcie Hinton, CCSA London Department of Journalism and Mass Communications

Murray State Signature Programs "Murray State Signature Program" is the term we use to categorize home grown Murray State FacultyLed programs that are built from the ground up by you, with academics at the heart of your program. Signature Programs are most often a spring break, winter break or summer program, ranging from 10 days to three weeks.

Create a New Program

You may choose to create a new Murray State Signature Program with faculty/staff colleagues to co-teach or direct your program. When creating a new program you may decide to use a provider, who can make logistical arrangements for you, or you may build the program on your own if you have significant knowledge of the location and resources. Creating a new program: •

Use a Murray State-approved provider. When you use a provider, you negotiate the dates and logistics, but the provider takes care of all reservations and arrangements for you, with academics at the center. Murray State-approved providers: • CCSA • KIIS • Experience Scotland • ISA • Barcelona Study Abroad Experience (BSA) • EF

Build a program on your own. You make all of the decisions and all of the arrangements: program dates, location, and logistics.

Join an Existing Program

You plug your course into a structure that already exists. Murray State Signature Programs open to all faculty: • • • • •

Berlin Summer (2 ½ week), 2019 (and every odd year) Ireland Summer (2 ½ week), 2018 London Spring Break, 2018 (and every even year) London-Edinburgh Winter (2 week), inaugural program 2017-2018 London-Dublin Winter (2 week), every three years, next program 2019-2020

Why a Recurring Signature Program? • • •

Most program arrangements are done by a Program Director, so no choosing housing or airfare or purchasing tickets on your own Ease of plugging your course into a proven & successful program Collaborate with other faculty across the curriculum to develop your course and program itinerary more fully

"Thank you Dr. Farrell for being such an inspirational and funny professor. I really enjoyed your classes while in Germany. I really appreciate the donut treats and all the hard work you put into allowing me to be able to experience and observe health care abroad." -Caitlyn Werkmeister, MSU student

Why Create a New Program? • • •

Your location and/or dates don’t match existing opportunities You have extensive knowledge of the program site and can direct or co-direct without the support of a provider See our online resources at murraystate.edu/teachabroad

What Course Do I Teach? • • •

Create a new course OR Infuse an existing one with new content Course activities are designed around your cultural and content goals

Important! •

Some colleges and departments provide site visit grants to set up new programs and solidify program logistics. Inquire with your Chair or Dean for any available support.

Ever since I studied abroad in college myself, I knew I had to be part of study abroad in the future. I have looked forward to giving students an experience as amazing as the one I had! Taking students to Hungary Summer 2015 was wonderful--I could see their growth as soon as they set foot in the airport before we left. It was mainly students who hadn't traveled much before, and each experience, from the ATM and money conversion to visiting multiple hospitals and clinics, was eye-opening and life-changing. -Dr. Jessica Naber, School of Nursing and Health Professions

A person can travel in a number of ways: vacationing to relax, taking a trip to see the sights, to accumulate check marks on a bucket list. But, traveling on a KIIS study abroad program, gives a person the rarest of opportunities--to travel within oneself. I chose CCSA because I didn’t have experience setting up tours, getting student discounts. I loved the idea of CCSA taking care of the logistics, the safety concerns, the budgeting of the trip. I could concentrate on my subject matter and the overall learning experience for my students. Plus there were other professors to meet, consult, learn from and spend evening meals with. It’s like a travel club specifically for college professors! -Dr. Marcie Hinton, JMC Department

Research Abroad

Internships Abroad

Research opportunities developed by faculty are a fantastic way to reach high caliber students you are already mentoring. These programs are often much smaller, with as few as 2 or 3 students, to give faculty the opportunity to work closely with students for academic advancement in, for example, archival research.

International internship programs are much less common at Murray State, but we hope those of you with ideas and contacts abroad will consider working with us to establish regular, field-specific programs that are appropriate for your students.

Highlights of Research Programs • • • •

If you have ideas for research or internship opportunities abroad for your students, please contact the Education Abroad Office to discuss the next steps for moving forward to build an experiential program that will advance student resumes.
