State of the Club Dear Ski & Snowboard Club Vail Members, Alumni, Supporters and Friends,
“
It gives me great pleasure to present you with our second annual report. In the following pages you will find program highlights, information about the source and use of funds, as well as, recognition of award winners, donors, volunteers and sponsors “For the Kids.”
I have been on the Board for 25 years and have seen many significant changes at the Club. In my opinion, by far the most important is the founding of the Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy. The Academy was started in an effort to accommodate the huge challenges facing our studentathletes trying to balance the rigors of ski and snowboard training and traveling along with a strenuous academic schedule. The Academy began in 1992 as a simple tutorial program where students were taught their home school curriculum. With increased student demand, in 2007 SSCV partnered with the Eagle County School District to create our current Academy. We now are fortunate enough to have the only Public School Ski Academy in the United States. Vail ski and snowboard racers and competitors will never have to leave the Valley again to find a great education combined with world class training, both of which are now offered by SSCV. - Phil Hoversten, Treasurer of the Board and longest standing board member
The 50th anniversary of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail was marked in 2013 with special celebrations and a “homecoming” of alumni. From our humble beginnings as a fledgling ski racing program for a handful of local kids, we have evolved into a multi-sport program with fully half of our 600 strong membership participating in Nordic and our acrobatic sports of Freestyle, Freeskiing and Snowboard. Together with the attractive academic opportunities provided by the public Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy and the independent Vail Mountain School, the club now draws families from throughout the United States and around the world to the Vail Valley in pursuit of dreams, personal growth and development of potential. While undeniably proud of the athletic achievements of our young sportsmen and women, most important are the core values of Character, Courage and Commitment that are learned every day by the pursuit of personal excellence in our sporting disciplines. The most celebrated annual awards at Ski & Snowboard Club Vail recognize leadership, effort, sportsmanship and responsibility. Our programs utilize competition in snowsports as the vehicle for developing important life skills, encouraging healthy lifestyles and a lifelong love of sport. In our ongoing effort to improve the opportunities provided to our kids and athletes we continue resource expansion. In August we broke ground on the Minturn Fitness Center. A partnership with the Town of Minturn will result in an 8,000 square foot facility at the Maloit Park Campus of Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy that will serve the athletic training needs of our athletes, provide for lifestyle education for kids and create recreational fitness opportunities for residents. An increased commitment to staff development and retention is being made by beginning seasonal employment for key coaching staff two weeks earlier than in the past. This will provide 40 hours of training prior to the on-snow start of programs. Education from leading experts in coaching, sport development and safety are planned for staff, parents and athletes. Exciting additional initiatives including re-development of the SSCV Clubhouse, the expansion of training terrain and snowmaking on Golden Peak and residences for students and staff continue to progress and new opportunities are being explored. All of us at Ski & Snowboard Club Vail are at your service “For the Kids” and appreciate all that you do as members of our community. Sincerely,
Aldo Radamus Executive Director

Core values
Human Performance
Far beyond creating outstanding athletes, SSCV coaches, teachers and administrators work each day to instill our core values of Character, Courage and Commitment in every SSCV athlete. It is our goal to foster individuals with Character, Courage and Commitment who will forever be impacted by their experiences and life lessons learned on and off the hill.
The SSCV Human Performance Program provides the highest level of all-inclusive performance programming and injury-prevention for winter sports athletes. We presently work with Olympic, Junior Championship, World Championship, Winter-X Games, Dew Tour and Gatorade Free Flow tour athletes. SSCV Human Performance makes the process about putting the athlete first, and utilizes the best practices of assessment, programming and data tracking and applies these to group training for teams in younger age brackets, and individual programming for elite athletes. SSCV’s acrobatic and strength/power sport athletes are tested utilizing a minimum athletic standard (MAS) assessment program. SSCV Human Performance then builds out programming for each individual athlete that allows for goal achievement and maximum athletic potential including, but not limited to, metabolic training, movement skills, strength and power, energy system development, flexibility and mobility training, nutrition and sport psychology. We pride ourselves on hiring the very best coaches in the industry to represent SSCV’s vision of being “the premier snowsports club in the world”. In order for SSCV to stay well ahead of the competition, coaches in the program are held to the highest levels of National Governing Body certification and continuing education standards. We have performance partnerships with companies such as Keiser, Power Plate, Woodway, Steadman Clinic, Vail Summit Orthopaedics, Steadman Philippon Research Institute and Functional Movement Systems (FMS). These partnerships allow us access to equipment and research that make SSCV Human Performance an industry- leading program, and provide us with the resources necessary for high achievement in all winter sports.

Rachael is a U16 Alpine athlete originally from Big Bear, CA Over the summer, Rachael received an invitation to the National Team Academy in Park City. With tremendous courage, she declined the nomination and gave up her spot for two years, choosing instead to stay in Vail and continue to pursue her dream of making the U.S. Ski Team with SSCV. Rachael is dedicated to reaching her goals as is evident by her commitment to training, both on and off the hill. With a perfect attendance record and positive attitude, Rachael lives, breathes, and sleeps skiing. As with most teenagers, Rachael’s character is challenged daily. Yet, Rachael sticks to her beliefs and leads instead of follows. Despite much social criticism surrounding the team uniform this season, Rachael took a stand and wore her to jacket because she was proud of her accomplishments that awarded her the privilege. We are proud to call Rachael our own and believe that she is a leader amongst her peers. Congratulations Rachael!

This past year, we had two big story lines. One was that our Vail Freeski community increased its involvement in the club through more volunteerism, more families and increased enrollment with our new Rookie Teams. The other story was the continued success of our top tier competitors. We had several full-time athletes qualify, for the first time, to the U.S. Ski Team, X Games, FIS World Championships and Freeski World Tour. We had podiums at all these events. Next year, we will strive for the same and more! However, it is always about making great people and then making great skiers. It’s about making champions, not winners. Winners last for a day, champions last forever.

Freestyle Program SSCV offers mogul specific programming for skiers from Development Bumps and Jumps Club, one-day a week, ages 7-12, to full-time programming for the FIS competition circuit (high school and post graduate). The best terrain on the mountain is covered in bumps and SSCV Freestyle teaches skiers to access it with confidence and ease. SSCV promotes a fun positive environment for athletes. SSCV’s dedicated and knowledgeable coaches have helped many young athletes advance to the U.S. Freestyle Team, FIS World Cup, and the Olympics, our sport’s highest stage. SSCV’s Mogul coaches teach skills that last a lifetime and can be used all over the mountain. 61 athletes participated in our Freestyle programs in 2012-2013.

I am very happy to say that the snowboard program built on a very successful 2011-2012 season and continued that success in 2012-2013. With wins and personal bests in all disciplines from our youngest athletes to our Pro athletes, it continued to highlight the overall strength of our program. Highlights included an overall T TR World Champion in halfpipe for Ayumu Hirano, a win at the Dew Tour for Kaitlyn Farrington, and the selection of local athletes Jake Pates and Ryan Wachendorfer to the FIS World Junior Championship Team. With the Olympics coming up, don’t be surprised to see more than a few of our SSCV athletes representing their country in Sochi. 2013-2104 promises to be an exciting season. Can’t wait!. - Ben Boyd, Snowboard Program Director

Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy The goal of the Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy (VSSA) is to challenge its student-athletes with a rigorous academic curriculum while supporting a world-class training and competition schedule. The majority of the student-athletes compete on a national and international level, which entails extensive travel during the school year. VSSA is specifically tailored to provide for the education of its oftentimes widely spread geographic student body. Every student travels with a laptop computer for easy access to schoolwork at all times. The use of innovative internet technology allows teachers and students to remain in close communication. Students collect assignments, participate in discussion boards, take quizzes, download videos of lectures and receive real time instruction from teachers over the web. VSSA’s student to teacher ratio of 16:1 allows for individualized attention. The majority of class sizes are under 20 students. Flexibility is key in this environment. Careful planning and monitoring of each student’s course work maintain a uniform opportunity for learning. VSSA’s students develop a level of independent learning that is unusual among high school students.

Future Stars
“
The Future Stars program progressively develops the ski and snowboard skills of children ages 6-9 years old in a safe, fun and challenging environment on Vail Mountain. On-snow technical training and participation in the Steadman Clinic Vail Cup events are the basis of this program. The goal at this age is to open the possibilities by exposing the athletes to the five different disciplines (Alpine, Freeski, Freestyle, Nordic and Snowboard) that SSCV offers. A strong fundamental skill base will allow children to develop to their personal potential and specialize in their future area of interests. There is no better way for kids to learn about their potential, safety, etiquette, competition and sportsmanship while creating friendships and learning a lifelong pastime. 52 athletes participated in our Future Stars program in 2012-2013.
Future Stars had a successful season. Each child grew leaps and bounds, both in character development and in their skiing. All athletes were exposed to the different disciplines that are offered at SSCV and met goals in Nordic, Alpine, Freestyle, Freeski park and pipe and Big Mountain skiing. Coaches and athletes alike put in 100% effort to accomplish all that they set out to do while having fun each Saturday. - Kelly Wilson, Future Stars Head Coach

2012-2013 Special Events i. Annual Ski & Snowboard SWAP
October 26-October 28, 2012 The 43rd Annual Ski & Snowboard SWAP was held October 26 – 28, 2012 at the Dobson Ice Arena in Vail. The SWAP is a long-standing community tradition which kick starts locals’ excitement for the upcoming ski season. The sale is known to have the year’s best deals on new and used ski and snowboard equipment, with products ranging from alpine, snowboard, telemark and Nordic equipment to winter clothing and accessories such as helmets, gloves and goggles. SSCV staffed the entire event with over 300 volunteers from our membership. The SWAP is SSCV’s longest standing fundraiser, and all proceeds from the event benefit the Club’s Annual Campaign.
Month Long Bring It On
January 2013 The consolidated January fundraiser replaced the former Downhill Dash, and other scholarship fundraisers, giving athletes just one place to focus their fundraising efforts. The Epic Month Long Bring It On is a ski/ride-a-thon benefitting SSCV’s Scholarship Fund. Athletes compete to ski and ride the most vertical feet in a month while also competing to raise scholarship funds through online donations from friends and family. Athletes win prizes for their efforts both on and off of the slope but the real winners are the scholarship recipients who benefit from this fun event!

vii. F.I.S. NorAm Cup January 31-February 5, 2013 The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s NorAm Series is an international level ski race circuit for competitors striving to earn spots on the World Cup circuit. With World Cup starts on the line, this series attracts top skiers from North America and Europe. As a premier international ski race, spectators had a chance to watch the next generation of World Champions, as many of the NorAm competitors are members of their respective national teams as well as current World Cup athletes. SSCV was proud to host two giant slaloms and two slaloms on Golden Peak for approximately 140 men and 100 women, January 31-February 5, 2013. Numerous competitors commented on the perfectly prepared race venue, calling Golden Peak the best prepared race hill they had skied on. This has been the most important Alpine race held on Vail Mountain since the 1999 World Championships.

ix. 50th Anniversary Reunion April 4-6, 2013
November 3, 2012 & December 15, 2012 The Annual Celebration of Winter gala is SSCV’s largest and most important fundraising event each year, benefitting the club’s Annual Campaign. On November 3, 2012, SSCV hosted the first of two events with the Cocktail Party at the Sebastian in Vail, for all SSCV members. Guests were greeted with a glass of Korbel champagne and mingled while bidding on their favorite silent auction items. SSCV alumni and current U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team members were in attendance to help celebrate the beginning of the season. The cocktail party concluded with a fashion show featuring products from SSCV’s official suppliers, Descente/DNA, Under Armour and Mt. Borah. The SSCV Leadership Council, an annual recognition society for donors who contribute gifts of $1,500 or more to the Annual Campaign, was celebrated during an appreciation dinner held at Larkspur Restaurant at the base of Vail’s Golden Peak on December 15, 2012. A delicious meal was prepared by Larkspur and a handful of large ticket items were auctioned between courses. December 23, 2012, January 13, February 17, March 3, March 23, March 24, 2013 In 1963, the newly formed Ski Club Vail hosted its first Rocky Mountain Ski Association race, and the Vail Cup was born. Almost 50 years later, The Steadman Clinic Vail Cup was renewed as an exciting and challenging series of events encompassing all programs offered by SSCV and free to all participants. The 2013 Steadman Clinic Series featured 6 events in December, January, February and March. Skiers and snowboarders, ages 3 – 11, competed in a combination of Alpine racing, halfpipe, slopestyle, big air, big mountain, moguls, and Nordic skiing. Competitions were held on Vail Mountain and at the Vail Nordic Center. Thanks to the generous support of Steadman Clinic Vail Cup sponsors, the series was free and open to children under the age of 12. With over 1,000 starts during the series, The Steadman Clinic Vail Cup was a popular event for many of the Vail Valley’s youth and an excellent introduction to snowsport competitions. 24
For nearly 50 years SSCV has been hosting events at both a world class and citizens’ level. The longest running and most popular has been the local Town Series. With the addition of Nordic racing events a few years ago, the Vail Summit Orthopaedics Town Series offers a race avenue for snowsports enthusiasts of all ages. The 2012-2013 series took place over 14 weeks from December – March. Participants as young as 5 and as seasoned as 60+ years old participated in this year’s races. The Vail Summit Orthopaedics Town Series had two event types for skiers, snowboarders and telemarkers – Nordic racing and gate racing. Freestyle, classic, sprint and relay Nordic races for competitors of all ages were held at Golden Peak, the Vail Nordic center and Maloit Park. Town Series events at Golden Peak for competitors age 21 and older included slalom, giant slalom, and super giant slalom races. The series culminated in crowning local Town Champions in all disciplines.

ii. Early Season Training November 2012
In its four years of early season operation, Golden Peak has quickly been recognized as a premier location for training during the month of November. In 2012, over 90 teams used Golden Peak for their early season training. Among those are the Men’s and Women’s national teams from the United States, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Norway, Sweden, Finland and many others. One would be hard pressed to find a World Cup or World Championship winner who did not train on Gold Peak last season. Early season training provides a great opportunity for SSCV athletes to train along side the world’s best. More importantly, however, is that SSCV athletes are able to train at home during this critical prep period, without the burdens of missed school and expensive travel. Not only does this program benefit SSCV athletes, but it also brings great benefits to the Vail community by creating a customer base for lodging, restaurants and other local businesses during what would be an extremely slow time of year.
v. Vail Summit Orthopaedics Town Series December 2012-March 2013
March 2-9, 2013 The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s Marriott Junior Championships are showcase events for junior aged athletes in Alpine, Cross-Country, Freestyle, Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping. They are often the launching pad for future U.S. Ski Team stars. Organized by local USSA clubs, the Marriott Junior Championships, now in their 36th season, are recognized by the USSA and the U.S. Olympic Committee. SSCV hosted the 2013 series for U16 Alpine racers from the Rocky/Central region. 185 athletes, ages 13-15, competed in slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom and downhill races in Beaver Creek the week of March 2-9, 2013. Life long memories were created as SSCV played the perfect host. From an athlete bowling party at Bol, to superior race conditions, the event and race-organizing committees flawlessly executed the event.
This year SSCV celebrated its 50th Anniversary. SSCV hosted a weekend of varied reunion activities in Vail. The weekend started with an informal gathering at the Fitz Lounge at Manor Vail Lodge on Thursday evening, followed by an extraordinary Dignitary Dinner hosted by SSCV members Kimberly and Jean-Michel Chelain at their restaurant, The Left Bank. On Friday, a lunch and tour of Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy provided insight into SSCV’s growth, and a cocktail party at The 10th Mountain Restaurant Friday evening gave alumni and current members an amazing opportunity to share stories over delicious food and drinks. On Saturday there was a group ski outing followed by a club BBQ. The weekend was a rare opportunity for reunion guests to relive fond memories while at the same time to hear first hand about SSCV’s recent achievements as well as its plans for next 50 years.
