2022 Ski & Snowboard Club Vail Annual Report

Page 1

Executive Director John Hale

Dear Ski & Snowboard Club Vail Community,

The 2021-2022 season shined a bright light on our community, bringing out the best in our athletes, staff, parents and beyond. As the stresses brought on by the global pandemic started to subside, a sense of normalcy was seen returning to our club. With that came spring gatherings to celebrate various aspects of our communityoutstanding volunteer efforts, leadership level philanthropy, a new mogul venue, end-of-season team celebrations and year-end awards recognition. A highlight of the end of the season was the gratefulness so many of you expressed for our coaches and their dedication to teaching and mentoring our athletes, both on and off snow, while imparting SSCV’s core values of character, courage and commitment onto them.

Our coaching staff has always been our greatest resource. What I took great pride in this past season was the depth and strength of our coaches across athlete groups of all ages, from the development level to the FIS and national team level. Not only is the impact of our coaching staff reflected in the results you will read about in this annual report, but it is also reflected in the resilience and strength our coaches instill in our athletes, character traits they will carry with them throughout their adult lives. While I could embellish on this, nothing is more powerful than hearing more directly from former SSCV athletes who continue to benefit from the impact their SSCV coaches had on them well into to their adult lives, as so eloquently expressed on the adjacent page.

Needless to say, I am thrilled to be entering my second year as executive director with an organization that has such a meaningful impact on so many children’s lives. I am also incredibly proud of the amazing results we have achieved working together - staff, athletes and parents - in support of our athletes this past season. I am thankful and humbled to be a part of such a resilient community and work alongside such an impactful staff. I look forward to seeing how our club will continue to exude greatness and develop skills in our 650+ athletes that will serve them well now and well into their adult lives.

Sincerely,

A Letter From

A Letter From Executive Director John Hale

SSCV Human Performance:

"Over the last year, our human performance team has worked directly with each program to target specific strength and conditioning (S&C) coordinators that provide dedicated support to their specific program. These highly qualified sport coaches work directly with the SSCV S&C Manager to receive additional training in the areas of human performance. In addition to the work done directly with our S&C Manager, these sport coaches receive additional training via both virtual and onsite workshops with the US Ski & Snowboard (USSS) human performance team, based out of Park City, UT. As a USSS accredited high performance center, SSCV maintains access to all of the resources that USSS can provide, ensuring that our S&C staff are trained in the latest techniques, movement patterns and best practices across all sectors of our sport. Through the generous support of donors, the SSCV Clubhouse now also has a facility that can meet the strength and conditioning needs of our athletes at Golden Peak. This presents great opportunity for our athletes and allows for more flexibility around available time at the MFC while also allowing for a way to maximize the pre- and post- training periods in Vail.”

"Overall we had a strong year in Alpine. The results that are highlighted below are noteworthy, but I believe these results are a reflection of the training environments we were able to create here at home. Despite warm conditions and a lack of snow early in the season we were able to secure excellent training appropriate for all of our groups from the FIS elite programs preparing for NorAm races, to the U10 programs getting their feet under them again through free skiing. One priority for alpine this year has been maximizing our training environment including the surface and terrain. A tremendous amount of man hours were invested in watering and maintaining the surface this year. The first round was targeted at preparing our NorAm athletes for the east coast swing of that series, the second in preparation for the U18 National Championships which SSCV hosted, including the first ever DH from the top of the T-bar to the bottom of Main Arena. These events gave the impetus, the result was an outstanding surface for daily training that was utilized by all age groups from Age Class Prep, through to our FIS groups throughout the season. None of this would have been possible without the hard work and determination of most of our staff. We need to continue to look for ways to streamline the process and ease the load on our staff. We are thankful for support from Vail Resorts throughout the season in creating world class training space."

"The Men's FIS team was able to achieve some outstanding results from local races in Colorado, to the U18 Nationals here at home in Vail, to some achieving their first NorAm experience and points. However, the real value comes from these young men creating life-long friendships and bonds through shared experiences with their teammates, pushing each other to break down their perceived limitations, embracing the challenges of commiting to big dreams and goals, and maybe even getting a few pow turns and laughs along the way."

FIS Men Highlights:

"Women's FIS had young first years and women graduated from college still trying to reach their goals congruently last season. We saw tremendous success across the board among all the ages. We put ladies on the US D team, NCAA teams, had a great showing at U18 Nationals, and were very competitive in our regional races. We had athletes learning how to go off a jump on speed skis for the first time pushing just as hard as Women fighting to win NorAm's for potential World Cup spots. It was a clarifying image to show that success happens at all levels. End of the day, these ladies were learning how to utilize a team and grow together. They were learning how to balance life, academics and skiing. And they were learning how to put hard work into their passions to reach their goals."

Alpine U14 Full-Time:

"The 2022 ski season was a very rewarding experience for both athletes and staff! Our primary goal with the SSCV U14 program is to build strong basic skiing skills, the foundation of which these athletes will be able to perform athletically to their highest potential for their entire ski racing existence. With that said, the SSCV U14 program has the strongest, most experienced staff to achieve this goal. Coaches who have a lifetime of ski racing and coaching experience from national team experience to international experience. With these young athletes, performance can not be the only goal, our coaching team also built strong character values and had fun! Our results at the Regional Championships demonstrated that our team is on track for a bright ski racing future. SSCV U14 had by far the most podiums of any Program in the Rocky/Central region where we had 19 of 30 possible podiums. The SSCV U14 program is looking forward to another amazing season"

Excited to see them continue to develop their skills and continue to thrive together. The U12 team dominated the age class series with the most podiums and depth. They united to become an even stronger force than expected and had a lot of fun at the same time. This group will make a big impact as they move through SSCV age groups. The best is yet to come!"

Future Stars:

"This season’s Future Stars numbers doubled from last year. I equate this to last year's success during a pandemic season and the dedication of our staff. Being a part of these athletes' introduction to SSCV is an honor. The pathways to all of our disciplines start with the Future Stars program and I can’t wait to see where they go with their athletic choices in the Future!"

Freeski & Snowboard

“The freeski and snowboard teams this year had one of their best seasons to date! The past few years we've really put an emphasis on building a strong foundation with each program and we are starting to see that pay off. It took some time to develop and grow, but our teams are becoming very strong in each of their competitive areas. As some of our athletes transition to NorAM level competitions, we are seeing many of them make it into the finals and getting podium spots. We've even had two kids earn US Rookie Team spots this year and a 1st place Big Mountain Freeride Junior World Champion.

Although competitions are a big part of all these programs, we pride ourselves on strong dryland and off season training as we prepare for the season ahead. We've continued to make improvements by adding some of the best training tools around. Super Tramps, a rope tow rail garden, a skateboard pump track and lots of time in the gym are just some of the ways we stay conditioned year round. We are seeing huge results from these types of training once the kids get on snow. It directly affects their confidence, air awareness and endurance, which in turn provides a more safe environment on the hill. In all, this past season could be a hard one to beat. I'm incredibly proud of our coaching staff and the hard work they put in. They are the true backbone to each program and the reason our teams are looked at as the top in the country. I also couldn't be happier with our teams. We have some remarkably talented and respectful kids, who are truly a joy to work with."

48

Freeride

Freeride:

"The winter of 2021/22 was tremendous for the SSCV Freeride Team. The program has seen steady growth, as the fun and exciting discipline of Freeride becomes more well known in the ski community. The Freeride Team has young athletes only just beginning their skiing journey as well as older elite level athletes traveling the world for competitions. For all these athletes, our coaches have the main goal of fostering a lifelong love of the sport."

We successfully traveled to West Yellowstone, Minnesota and Europe without a single positive case of COVID. On top of that not a single athlete missed an event due to COVID. Everyone did their part to ensure we had a successful season, parents, athletes and coaches all worked together to support one another and make the best of the situation. A huge thanks to my staff for really staying focused and keeping everyone (including me) in check. We are hopeful that moving forward we will be able to handle just about anything that comes our way. Cycling

The 2022 Cycling season saw a return to a full competitive racing schedule, which was hindered the previous season by COVID. Our cyclists raced their hardest, achieved many personal bests and brought home a number of podiums and wins for SSCV.

"Overall it was a fantastic season. It was so great to get back to normal racing with Vail Recreation District town series events as well as a full Colorado High School Mountain bike schedule. During the course of the season we had approximately 70 riders from ages 8 to 18! The culmination was state champs in Durango where our VSSA team was 1st for division 2 and our Eagle Valley squad was 3rd. The division 2 teams use the top 10 point scorers for the event. It was nice to bring home the 2 trophies!"

2022 Cycling Season Highlights:

SSCV Cycling had 5 individual top 10's among the two squads at states with an individual win from Lucy Perkins.

Academic Partners

SSCV Academic Partners:

SSCV’s academic partnerships make it possible for every athlete to achieve their full potential on and off snow. These partnerships work together in order to create the opportunity for athletes to train their hardest, all while also challenging themselves academically at the below institutions:

VAIL SKI & SNOWBOARD ACADEMY – 5th-12th grade Eagle

County public school educating SSCV full-time athletes

VAIL MOUNTAIN SCHOOL – K-12th grade tuition-based independent school

RED SANDSTONE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – K-5th grade Eagle

County public school with a cooperative arrangement with SSCV for students to take part in a qualified SSCV four day a week fulltime program (two half days mid-week plus Saturdays and Sundays) coupled with an after training study hall on Wednesday and Friday afternoons proctored by the SSCV/RSES Program Coordinator and Assistant who are also SSCV staff members.

Advancement - SSCV Supporters

In the 2021-2022 season twenty 20% ($1.549 million) of SSCV's $7.7 million operating budget was comprised of revenue from fundraising, with the 2021-2022 Annual Campaign as SSCV's single largest fundraising initiative ($670,000).

Additional support to help SSCV reach the overall $1.549 million fundraising goal came from sources such as SSCV sponsors, in-kind donors, raffle ticket and auction purchasers, restricted donations and an Academic Fund to support VSSA based academic coaches.

In addition to annual fundraising, the Golden Peak Expansion and the new mogul venue on Golden Peak would not be possible without capital campaign donor support.

Volunteers are also of critical importance to SSCV. SSCV relies heavily on the support of hundreds of volunteers each year who give thousands of hours to help with competitions, fundraising and various club tasks and events. Volunteers are critical to SSCV’s ability to host events and offer quality programming at the most affordable cost possible.

SSCV cannot thank its supporters enough for everything that they help to make possible for SSCV athletes, including enabling SSCV to attract and retain an outstanding coaching staff which mentors our athletes to help them to reach their individual potential day in and day out both on and off snow.

Financial Assistance

More than 335 athletes received financial assistance through scholarships, travel support, and discounts for this fiscal year, totaling over $735,000.

SSCV is very proud of our scholarship program. In 21-22, SSCV made changes to our scholarship procedure by considering the average additional expenses facing our families for participation in the sport (equipment, passes, travel, camps, etc) beyond the Club program fees. In doing so, we believe we are more accurately capturing our families financial needs and better able to support them with aid dollars. We also have increased our maximum scholarship award from 75% of program fees to 100% of program fees. These were pivotal changes and we are very encouraged by the initial results. We are helping more families and have grown the available pool of aid funds. We hope to build on this in the future and increase the number of families that we are able to support.

100
101

During the 2022-2023 season Ski & Snowboard Club Vail is reliant on the generosity of you and others like you to fund approximately 24% of its operating budget (over $2.1 million), including achievement of SSCV's $700,000 Annual Campaign goal. See pie chart below.

Achieving these goals is critical to attracting and retaining an exceptional coaching staff, helping every SSCV athlete to be their very best both on and off snow.
