Leadership U empowers students with workshop Students use first workshop of semester to strengthen leadership skills HELLEN AKINYI STAFF WRITER The Student Leadership workshop is program that hosts workshops which are all about empowering anyone who wants to be a leader.

The workshops are organized by Leadership U which is a student-led program within Student Activities and the board consists of five students who work together to plan the workshops.

It offers different opportunities to students at Minnesota State University, Mankato like workshops and a retreat once a year.

Before any workshop, they often try to do activities to break the ice and once in a while they bring in guest speakers to enhance the whole experience.

Asian markets tumble as fears over virus outbreak spread Shares tumbled in Asia on Thursday as concern over the impact of the virus outbreak in China deepened.

Taiwan’s benchmark dived 5.3% as its market reopened after the Lunar New Year. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index sank 1.9% to 22,935.20, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index skidded 1.7% to 26,693.06. In Australia, the S&P ASX/200 declined 0.4% to 7,001.60. South Korea’s Kospi lost 1.4% to 2,154.05.

Shares also retreated in India and Southeast Asia.

Mainland Chinese markets remained closed for the Lunar New Year holiday.

“With equity markets pumped to juicy levels by the relentless flow of cheap central bank money around the world, unexpected Wuhan-like events leave them acutely vulnerable to potentially aggressive corrections,” Jeffrey Halley of Oanda said in a commentary.

The death toll from the virus rose to 170, with 7,711 people confirmed infected, as foreign evacuees from the worst-hit region in central China began returning home under close observation. World health officials expressed “great concern” that the disease is starting to spread between people outside of China.

In other news, South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. said its operating profit for the last quarter fell 33.7% from a year earlier. But it predicted earnings will improve in 2020, driven by a gradually stabilizing computer chip market and increasing 5G smartphone sales.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday afternoon, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell acknowledged that there’s a risk the outbreak could slow the global economy.

Wall Street’s busy week of company earnings reports continues Thursday, when Coca-Cola, UPS, Amazon and Visa are scheduled to release results. Caterpillar and Exxon Mobil will report results on Friday.

Benchmark crude oil fell gave up 57 cents to $52.76 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It lost 15 cents to settle at $53.33 a barrel on Wednesday.

Brent crude oil, the international standard, declined 65 cents to $58.26 per barrel.

It rose 30 cents to close at $59.81 a barrel overnight.

Gold rose $9.30 cents to $1,579.70 per ounce, silver rose 11 cents to $17.60 per ounce and copper fell 3 cents to $2.55 per pound.

The dollar fell to 108.89 Japanese yen from 108.98 yen on Wednesday. The euro strengthened to $1.1017 from $1.1008.

3 Senate Dems from red states waver on impeachment votes

WASHINGTON (AP) — As the Senate impeachment trial grinds toward a climax, it remains unclear how three Democrats will vote on whether to toss President Donald Trump from office.

Sens. Doug Jones of Alabama, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona are all question marks, though they’re widely regarded as likely to vote for at least one of the two impeachment articles.

Unlike a quartet of wavering Republicans who could put Trump in peril as lawmakers decide whether to call witnesses and extend the proceedings, the three Democrats’ votes on whether to acquit him won’t likely affect the trial’s outcome. It seems certain that the GOP-run Senate will lack the 67 votes needed to remove Trump from office, no matter what the trio does.

But the Democrats’ decisions will color their political careers and this year’s presidential campaign. If one or more of them votes to acquit Trump — even voting against one article of impeachment while supporting the other, which many consider likely — it could alienate some Democratic voters, mark their legacies and let Trump spend his reelection campaign asserting that he was cleared by a bipartisan vote.

On the other hand, with Republicans now controlling the Senate 53-47, many Democrats aren’t willing to criticize moderates from swing states for voting in ways that will protect their political futures.

All three wavering Democrats come from states Trump won in 2016 and where Democrats struggle to win elections.

“They have reputations for being independent actors,” said Democratic pollster Mark Mellman. “I think that’s what they’ll do here.”

“That’s very tough terrain,” Democratic pollster Celinda Lake said of their states.

“They’re all people who’ll need Republican or independent votes to win, so I’m sure they’re thinking about that.”

Jones and Manchin have said they back their party’s effort to call witnesses — Trump’s former national security adviser John Bolton is a top target — while Sinema has not commented. But with just four Republicans now seen as possible votes for witnesses — and even that appears to be a tough climb — opposition to witnesses by

even one Democrat would probably kill that effort and infuriate the party.

“Anyone who votes against hearing the evidence, witnesses and documents will be judged harshly by history,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., who pointed out that he wasn’t singling out members of a particular party. “They will be haunted by history.”

GOP Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Mitt Romney of Utah, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee have all expressed a willingness to consider witnesses. But it is unclear how many of them will vote that way in an initial showdown vote expected Friday.

Trump all but taunted the Democrats on Twitter on Wednesday.

“There is much talk that certain Democrats are going to be voting with Republicans on the Impeachment Hoax, so that the Senate can get back to the business of taking care of the American people. Sorry, but Cryin’ Chuck Schumer will never let that happen!”

Trump tweeted, referring to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. Asked what he’d tell his undecided colleagues, Schumer said, “The only message I have is listen to the arguments carefully and make your own decision of conscience.”

Jones, 65, the only one of the three facing reelection this November, is running in a deep-red state and faces the greatest career risk. Voting to convict Trump could make it harder for him to pick off some Republican voters, while voting to acquit him could anger the Democrats whose votes, contributions and volunteering he’ll need to win.

Jones was noncommittal Wednesday about the outcome of the case , saying he wanted to evaluate the evidence.

“Now don’t go putting some damn headline in there, ‘Still open to acquit.’ I’m open to acquit, I’m open to convict,” Jones told reporters. “I want to hear all the evidence.

I want to hear witnesses.”

Manchin told West Virginia reporters Wednesday that while he wants to hear witnesses, he’s undecided about whether to acquit Trump.

obstructed Congress by refusing to provide documents or White House witnesses was “the weakest” of the two charges. But he said the charge that Trump had abused power by pressuring Ukraine to provide dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden, a Democratic presidential hopeful, was “very serious.”

Manchin, 72, is a former governor and household name in a state where Trump is enormously popular. Now in his 10th year in the Senate and reelected to a six-year term in 2018, it is unclear whether he will run again for public office.

As the trial began, Sinema released a statement that shed no light on her views.

“I will treat this process with the gravity and impartiality that our oaths demand and will not comment on the proceedings or facts until the trial concludes,” she said.

Sinema, 43, has been in the Senate for just a year but has already cut an unusual profile. Her start in Arizona Democratic politics came on the party’s left wing, but she’ has tried to carve a more moderate profile in the Senate. It was the first winning Democratic Senate campaign in Arizona in three decades.

Manchin and Jones have both periodically posted brief videos on social media giving their thoughts on the trial.

Authorities find longest Southwest border smuggling tunnel SAN DIEGO (AP) — U.S. authorities on Wednesday announced the discovery of the longest smuggling tunnel ever found on the Southwest border, stretching more than three-quarters of a mile from an industrial site in Tijuana, Mexico, to the San Diego area.

The tunnel featured an extensive rail cart system, forced air ventilation, high voltage electrical cables and panels, an elevator at the tunnel entrance and a drainage system.

While there were no arrests, no drugs found at the site and no confirmed exit point in the U.S., the length — more than 14 football fields — stunned authorities.

“This one blows past (the second-longest),” said Lance LeNoir, a Border Patrol operations supervisor. “We never really thought they had the moxie to go that far. They continue to surprise me.”

The tunnel exposes limitations of President Donald Trump’s border wall, which stretches several feet underground in the area and is considered effective against small, crudely built tunnels often called “gopher holes.”

day was found about 70 feet (21 meters) underground, well below the wall.

Following the discovery in August, Mexican law enforcement identified the entrance and U.S. investigators mapped the tunnel that extends a total of 4,309 feet.

Authorities have found 15 sophisticated tunnels on California’s border with Mexico since 2006, with hallmarks including lighting, ventilation, railway tracks and hydraulic lifts.

The tunnels are concentrated in Otay Mesa, an area where clay-like soil is conducive to digging and warehouses provide cover.

The latest tunnel was discovered by Mexican authorities in a Tijuana parking lot for cargo trucks, next to the city’s airport.

U.S. authorities mapped its course, drilled a hole on the U.S. side and lowered a camera to determine where to start making their way through.

“It was endless,” LeNoir said.

Authorities didn’t say who they believe was behind the tunnel but the area has been a stronghold of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel. The cartel’s longtime leader, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was sentenced to life in U.S. prison in July.

Kobe Bryant’s death throws spotlight on crash-warning system LOS ANGELES (AP) — The crash that killed nine people including Kobe Bryant has led to calls for crash-warning systems to be installed in more helicopters, but regulators and pilots worry that the instrument can trigger too many alarms and prove distracting.

“Another warning system screaming at you isn’t going to help,” said Brian Alexan-

der, a helicopter pilot and aviation lawyer. “You don’t want to inundate the pilot.”

When asked about how they pick the topics for each workshop, Menk said, “When it comes to the topics, we often give surveys to the students just to make sure the topic is relevant because that is the whole point.”

She went on about how unhelpful it’ll be if the topics they taught and talked about during the workshops were irrelevant. Apart from

just using the survey as a way of getting the relevant topic discussions, they also use the survey to get the feedback they need and get to know what the students took out from that particular workshop.

The workshops often enable the students to not only acquire leadership skills that they may need, but also skills that they can use wen looking for employment in their fields.

Their next workshop will be about empathy on Feb. 5 in CSU 245.

National Transportation Safety Board officials say it is too early to tell whether a TAWS on Bryant’s Sikorsky helicopter could have prevented the crash. But they think it should have been installed on the aircraft, and they criticized federal regulators for not carrying out the NTSB’s recommendation over a decade ago to mandate such equipment on helicopters with six or more passenger seats.

While some pilots believe TAWS is unnecessary and refer to its warnings as “nuisance alarms,” Peter Goelz, a former managing director of the NTSB, said there is “no reasonable excuse” for the system not to be installed on all choppers.

“From a safety perspective, you want all the safety enhancements that are available,” he said. “The trade-off is worth it.”

MAX MAYLEBEN MEDIA EDITOR When I was asked to write an opinion piece on something that I am passionate about, I had a few ideas cross my mind.

I could write about the Corona virus, the Trump hearings, or even the MSU AllSports Dome. But one thing came to mind, a topic that I am extremely passionate about. Fries.

So, here is my breakdown of what I believe to be the best and the worst of the fried potato.

Topping off my list, is the beloved curly fry. I am hard pressed to find something wrong with this beautiful piece of culinary artwork. To start, the shape is everything you want in a fry and more.

It is fun, unique, and most of all, exciting. Like a snowflake, every fry is different and special in its own way.

From the small, crunchy curls, to the huge spring-like structures, curly fries keep you on your toes and keep you guessing. The next important category to analyze is the seasoning.

There may be outliers, but more often than not, curly fries come loaded with extremely flavorful seasoning.

Any curly fry worth its salt (no pun intended) will have more than just salt.

The thickness and the crinkle of the fry lead to a number of problems too large to ignore.

The softness of the middle feels like you are eating a plain mashed potato in stick form. The crinkle causes the fry to catch little to no seasoning or salt. Having no fry is better than having a crinkle cut fry.

Alumni Journey

It’s the summer of 1987.

A kid from a small town, just graduated high school, enters an office here on campus. He’s confident, but he’s nervous regardless. He has experience, but not THIS kind of experience. He’s a freshman, looking for a job, not so much for the money, but for THAT kind of experience. He got that job, and it would turn that kid into a man, and shape his future to this day.

My name is Dana Clark, and that kid was me.

My journey with the MSU Reporter started in 1987, “back in the day” as we say.

But before we get to that, let’s set the stage with a little background.

I grew up in Windom, Minnesota, a small town in the southwestern part of the state, roughly 65 miles southwest of Mankato.

As I entered high school, I was asked by my English teacher, Robert Lindaman, to join the high school newspaper, the Tatler. I don’t know why - maybe he had liked my writing on some assignment or maybe he was just looking for a student or two who knew how to write a correct sentence.

I accepted the challenge, and immediately knew I liked it. Not just the writing part.

Not just the interviewing people part, or the story research. Not just the layout and design part. It was all of that, and the smell of that ink on freshly printed newspaper.

I came into the Reporter office that first day of fall semester, where I met with the Editor in Chief at the time, Cathy Hay. I told her about my high school experience, which honestly was nowhere near that of a college newspaper.

But, I was here to learn, so she gave me a chance and hired me on the spot. If I remember correctly, I worked that same day.

I started as a Production Assistant to then Production Manager, Tom Teigen.

He was a cool dude, and we immediately bonded talking about music. He was older, so obviously, our tastes were slightly different. Regardless, I really loved working in the Reporter office as a student.

Lester: “So you’re the kid who’s been sending me those articles from the school newspaper?”

William: “Yeah. Yeah. I’ve been doin’ some stuff for a local underground paper also.”

Lester: “Yeah.

What?

Are you like the star of your school?”

William: “They hate me.”

Lester: “Yeah. You’ll meet them again on their long journey to the middle.”

(Almost Famous, 2000) Long before the 2000 movie ‘Almost Famous’, I wanted to be Cameron Crowe’s character, William Miller. I wanted to be that teenage journalist who wrote for Rolling Stone.

After all, I loved music, mostly the hard rock, classic rock, heavy metal stuff.

I wanted to go on tour with one of my favorite bands. I wanted to see behind the curtain. I wanted to meet famous musicians.

That didn’t happen, but I did eventually start writing some Arts & Entertainment section articles, some album reviews, and some concert reviews.

I was happy to do get that chance during my last few years working as a student, but something strange happened along the way... I became a Graphic Artist.

As I was having so much fun in college by this time, March of 1991, actually - I was having too much fun.

My grades suffered, and I left school and got a job. After all, I was living here, and I wasn’t going to get rent money from my parents if I wasn’t in school.

I worked at Cub Foods for a while, tended some bar at the Mankato Morson-Ario and Eagle Lake American Legion, but eventually got hired in late December of 1992 at Taylor Corporation as a Graphic Designer/Typesetter.

I stayed at Taylor Corporation until March of 1996, by which time I had been married for two years. While I would have liked to stay there, but at the time, I just didn’t know what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

I floated around for a few years, working for the St. Peter Herald, Home Magazine and MGA Graphics.

Then one day in 2001, while working at the Home

Magazine, a woman from the past came into the office. We conversed, caught up, and said goodbye. The next day, I got a phone call from that same woman.

Her name is Jane Tastad, and she was the Reporter’s Office Manager (and still is).

She was curious if I wanted to possibly interview for the Graphic Arts Supervisor job for the Reporter. I interviewed, I got the job, and I’ve been here ever since.

I’m not going to lie and say it’s all been wine and roses, but what I will say, is that working in this office for the last 19 years has put me in touch with some great students. We’re all used to having students work in our offices around campus, sometimes they only hang around for only a week, and some may stay for a semester or a whole year.

Obviously, we like to get students in our office right away, as freshman or sophomores.

We want our students at the Reporter to work here as long as they can, not just for the sake of not having to retrain new students every year, but because it gives them the best chance to learn, grow and improve their skills. We want our student employees to learn about as much as they can while they are here.

In most cases, our former students do recognize how much more they were prepared for the ‘real world’ after graduation, because they

worked in the Reporter office.

We have graduates and Reporter alumni doing some amazing things, and working in high profile positions.

We’ve got alumni working for major companies: companies they’ve started on their own, and those working in professional settings for sports teams like the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Minnesota Wild, and the Pittsburgh Pirates, just to name a few.

We have former students who have worked for newspapers across the country and abroad. We have former students who work for companies like ESPN, Amazon, and Golf.com.

The list goes on and on.

The Reporter has been a home for students from all walks of life, from locations across the country and world, students studying a wide range of vocations; whether it be Journalism or Mass Media, or a field that you would not associate with a newspaper staff member, like Athletic Training, English, Computer Science, Art, Biology, Sociology, History, Nursing.

No matter their story or the path they took to get here, the Reporter has continued to give chances to students who may not have been given one elsewhere.

We all make mistakes, and the Reporter is no different.

We pride ourselves to do our best, but when we do something wrong, we stress that it’s something to learn from, and hopefully get bet-

ter because of it.

Some years are better than others, and some years we have hurdle after hurdle to overcome. Eventually, those issues get worked out by the time the year is up - then we start it all over again.

Each year brings a new Editor in Chief, new section editors, new advertising salespeople, new writers, new photographers and artists.

Sure, it can be frustrating at times, but we do it - because we know we are helping these students get better each time they put out a paper.

We know that their experience in our office will only benefit them when the time comes to interview for those real world jobs, and you can’t put a price tag on experience.

Giving students a chance to be a part of something bigger than them, and giving them a chance to figure out who they are and where they want to take their life path... that’s why we do this and why we want to continue doing this.

MNSU students share their YouTube journey ALYSSA BUNDE STAFF WRITER In a day and age where Youtubers like David Dobrik are idolized, it seems like everyone has created a Youtube channel now, or at least considered it. For many 20 something-year-olds, Youtube has been around their whole life and the allure of creating videos has even enticed some of our own here at Minnesota State University, Mankato. I set out to speak to these MNSU Youtubers and learn about their journey and why they decided to add their faces to the billions of videos already published.

There is a stereotype of MNSU being a big party school and if you do a quick search of MNSU on Youtube, many of the first videos that populate do not help disprove that stereotype. Much of the videos are from male vloggers showcasing their time at parties, filled with booze and girls. I spoke to one vlogger, Cordarious Boyd, who has party vlogs posted and asked his reasoning for joining Youtube.

Like many others, Boyd was

inspired by watching other YouTubers. As for what gave him the final push to start his channel he explained, “whenever I went out people told me to start a YouTube channel and so I started vlogging what I do during the week and weekends.”

Boyd continued to explain that he doesn’t focus on the views or subscribers but that he has the channel “mainly so in a couple of years I can reflect on what the best memories and friends I had in college.”

While some people use Youtube to encapsulate their current reality others use the platform to escape it. For MNSU student and vlogger Maia Eden, Youtube was a distraction after a bad breakup. She explained, “creatively engaging my mind is something that really helps me when I’m feeling down.”

Eden is currently at 2.28K subscribers and creates a range of content from vlogs to hauls to her journey as a new music industry student.

Recently she has begun to think more critically about the content she produces to “make her channel more watchable.” While Eden

wants to create more watchable content she explained it isn’t only about the views or likes for her. The creator stated, “I’m not really looking to make YouTube a full-time career, it’s more just a platform to be creative on.”

A similar MNSU YouTuber is Michelle Dolezal, better known to some as @ Mishshelly. Dolezal is current-

ly at 6.26K subscribers and has a wide array of vlogs, hauls, lookbooks and more.

While the creator doesn’t post as frequently anymore, she still agreed to share insight about her channel.

Originally, inspired by other YouTubers, she and her best friend started their own

channel called “Maya and Michelle’s Makeup”. However, after realizing the friend didn’t want to upload consistently, Dolezal decided to

Actors’ union issues standards for supervisors of sex scenes LOS ANGELES (AP) — The union that represents actors and television performers issued a series of standards and guidelines Wednesday for crew members who supervise scenes involving sex and nudity. The goal is to combat on-set sexual harassment.

The framework announced by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists provides a common set of policies and practices for so-called ``intimacy coordinators″ to help productions and actors navigate sexually sensitive scenes.

Under the guidelines, intimacy coordinators should have pre-production meetings with producers, directors and writers to establish the exact degrees of nudity expected and the specifics of simulated sex as established in scripts. They should have

one-on-one meetings with actors to be clear about what they consent to.

“These protocols and guidelines will help to normalize and encourage the use of intimacy coordinators in productions, therefore ensuring the safety and security of SAG-AFTRA members while they work,” union President Gabrielle Carteris said in a statement.

The guidelines say that on set, intimacy coordinators should review the so-called “modesty garments” and physical barriers used during simulations of onscreen sex, and be familiar with ways to help directors choreograph the scenes in ways that can keep them believable and artistic without sacrificing the dignity or safety of performers.

coordinators, directly address the problem of sexual harassment on sets, the union’s National Executive Director David White said in a statement.

Deviations from the standards do not carry enforcement penalties.

Professionals Association, helped create the guidelines and said in a statement that they “strike the right balance between describing the roles and responsibilities of intimacy coordinators while still allowing for flexibility from show-to-show.”

The move is the latest of several made by SAG-AFTRA

during the #MeToo era in an attempt to fight sexual harassment and other sexual misconduct aimed at actors.

They include the adoption in 2018 of a code of conduct, which says among other things that auditions and similar professional meetings should not be held in hotel rooms or homes.

Accusers: Weinstein excused lewd acts as a showbiz norm NEW YORK (AP) — Harvey Weinstein callously preceded an alleged rape with reassurances that he’d had a vasectomy, one accuser testified Wednesday.

Another accuser on the witness stand at Weinstein’s New York City trial said the one-time Hollywood titan tried trading movie roles for sex, claiming the lewd offer was the kind of thing that happened all the time in the film business.

Both were aspiring actresses in their early 20s when they met Weinstein more than 15 years ago, and both say he preyed on their vulnerabilities and dreams of stardom.

Choking back tears, Tarale Wulff told jurors there was no stopping the much larger Weinstein as he grabbed her by the arm, pushed her onto a bed and raped her at his apartment in 2005, during what was supposed to be an audition.

Wulff, now 43 and a model, said she froze, thinking that

would make it “easier to get through, to get past it.”

Dawn Dunning testified that the year before, Weinstein put his hand up her skirt and fondled her genitals during a meeting in his hotel suite about her fledgling acting career.

At another meeting, Dunning said, he offered to put her in three movies, but only if she had sex with him and his assistant.

“When he said that, I kind of laughed, I thought he was kidding, and he had kind of a crass sense of humor,” Dunning testified. “But when I started laughing, he got really angry and started screaming at me. He said, ‘you’ll never make it in this business, this is how this industry works.’”

Dunning, now 40, said Weinstein went on to namedrop actresses Salma Hayek and Charlize Theron, implying they had done similar things to achieve success — something both women have strongly denied.

Hayek has said she had to fight off Weinstein’s constant harassment and bullying.

Theron was upset when some accusers said he implied they had slept together.

Wulff and Dunning’s experiences with Weinstein are not part of the underlying criminal charges against him, but their testimony could be a factor in whether he goes to prison at the end of his landmark #MeToo-era trial.

Prosecutors called them as witnesses under a state law that allows testimony about so-called “prior bad acts,” enabling them to explore things like motive, opportunity, intent and a common scheme or plan.

Weinstein, 67, is charged with forcibly performing oral sex on Mimi Haleyi, at the time a “Project Runway” production assistant, in 2006 and raping another aspiring actress in 2013. That woman could testify later this week.

Weinstein has insisted any sexual encounters were consensual.

His lawyers raised doubts about Wulff’s recollection after she disclosed that she had worked with a therapist for a year to fill gaps in her memory. Speaking to reporters later, Wulff’s lawyer called that line of questioning a “red herring” and said her memory of being raped has never altered.

Weinstein’s lawyers also questioned why Dunning waited until last summer to tell prosecutors that Weinstein had fondled her after she had gone public with the jobs-for-sex allegation, first in an article in The New York Times in October 2017.

Weinstein, who was subdued in his interactions with reporters during the trial’s first week, seemed looser as he left the courthouse, proclaiming “It went great today. The lawyers killed it.” He likened a portion of Dunning’s testimony to bull excrement.

The jury of seven men and five women has already heard from Haleyi, who

tearfully testified Monday that she tried to fight off Weinstein before he sexually assaulted her, and actress Annabella Sciorra, who testified last week that he overpowered and raped her after barging into her apartment in the mid-1990s.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they have been victims of sexual assault, unless they agree to be named or gone public with their stories, as Haleyi, Wulff, Dunning and Sciorra have done.

Wulff testified that on an occasion before the alleged rape, Weinstein grabbed her arm as she served cocktails at one of his usual Manhattan haunts, led her toward a darkened terrace and started masturbating.

Perhaps one of the more successful trends right now is fitness. The fitness industry is booming, and people sharing their fitness journey and advice has become a common activity. One that MNSU fitness vlogger Neil Bigaouette has joined. Bigaouette has 55 subscribers and a variety of content from bodybuilding

to travels and vlogs of his daily life. The creator explained YouTube helps keep him accountable because “it’s hard to stay motivated sometimes so having that following and support no matter how big or little is amazing.”

What remains truly amazing about Youtube is the variety of paths that can be followed when starting a channel. While the motivations are all unique, the general concept is the same. YouTube provides a creative outlet for users to

express themselves. Disregarding the subscribers and view counts allows students here at MNSU are taking full advantage of the social platform to make their goals a reality.

So if you’ve ever been on the fence about making your own channel, you’ll never know until you try.

Who knows maybe you’ll actually be the next David Dobrik and get to hand out frivolous amounts of Teslas.

Dunning told jurors she met Weinstein while waiting tables at a different Manhattan night spot, one where bottle service was a trendy indulgence for the rich and famous.

Weinstein immediately appeared to take an interest in her fledgling acting career, she said, and invited her to a lunch meeting where, noting his infamous temper, she said he was “on the phone a lot yelling at people.”

Several meetings followed, Dunning said, including one at a boutique hotel in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood where Weinstein was using a suite as a temporary office.

At one point, she testified, Weinstein led her into a bedroom and put his hand up her skirt.

“I stood up. I was in shock,” Dunning said, fighting back tears as she described the alleged incident when she was 24. “He just

started talking really fast.

He said, ‘Don’t make a big deal about this. It will never happen again.’”

Dunning said she “just kind of gave him the benefit of the doubt” when Weinstein said it wouldn’t happen again. She said she didn’t scream or yell and didn’t tell anyone because she was embarrassed and didn’t want to be a victim.

Dunning said that she later agreed to meet Weinstein at a cigar bar, but that an assistant took her to a suite where the producer was standing in a bathrobe.

There, she said Weinstein showed her a contract for three movie roles she would get on the condition she had “a threesome with his assistant.”

Dunning said she didn’t know what Weinstein would do after she laughed off the offer, so she ran for the door and down the hall to the elevator.

“He was a big guy. He was towering over me,” she testified. “I was really scared.”

Men’s hockey travels up north to Alaska

The Mavericks women’s hockey team will host the Lindenwood Lions ANDREW NEURURER SPORTS EDITOR The Minnesota State Mavericks men’s hockey team will be traveling to Alaska to take on the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves this Friday and Saturday.

The Mavericks are currently 23-4-1 and have a conference record of 17-3. The men’s hockey team was riding an eight-game winning streak before their loss against the Bemidji State Beavers on Jan. 25. As for Alaska Anchorage, they’re 4-16-4 and hold a conference record of 4-13-3.

Coming into the game, Minnesota State is riding a ninegame winning streak against the Seawolves – dating back to Feb. 4, 2017. When on the road against Alaska Anchorage, MSU has a record of 2512-6 and is 55-23-10 all-time against them.

The two teams have met twice this season in Mankato, where the Mavericks won by a combined score of 10-1.

The men’s hockey team is scoring 3.6 goals per game and is holding their opponents to just 1.5, whereas the Seawolves are scoring 2.1 goals and allowing its opponents to outscore them with 3.2.

Minnesota State’s offense is being led by senior Marc Michaelis, who has 33 points on the season, scoring 16 goals and creating 17 assists.

Senior Parker Toumie is the team’s next leading scorer with 26 points, getting a large part of that with his 16 assists.

Freshman Lucas Sowder is leading the team with 19 points and has added four goals on top of that.

Minnesota State also has 13 players in double digit point totals, whereas the Seawolves have just three players – all three have 13 points.

Sophomore Dryden McKay is currently 22-3-1 and has stopped 94% of his shots this season.

As for the women’s hockey team, they will be hosting the

Men’s basketball to take on Dragons and Wolves ANDREW NEURURER SPORTS EDITOR The Minnesota State men’s basketball team will be on the road to take on the MSU Moorhead Dragons and the Northern State Wolves this weekend.

Minnesota State enters play with a 11-9 record and a conference record of 9-5. This comes after splitting their home series on Jan. 24 and 25, this last weekend.

The first game will be against the Dragons, who have an overall record of 12-8 and a conference record of 8-6. MSU Moorhead has a home record of 7-4 as well, which might be troublesome, as the Mavericks are just 4-5 on the road.

MSU has had the advantage all-time against Moorhead, with a record of 22-10 and have won their previous five meetings. The last time these two teams met, MSU squeaked out an 88-87 win on Feb. 1, 2019.

However, MSU is 10-1 when playing at home, but they’re

only 3-3 when it comes to road games against the Dragons.

Two players to watch out for on the Dragons side are Gavin Baumgartner and Bryce Irsfeld. Baumgartner is the team’s leading scorer with 16.3 points per game and is averaging 5.2 rebounds on top of that.

Irsfeld is averaging 12.9 points and is the team’s second leading scorer.

As for Northern State, they should prove to be a harder match up, as the Wolves are 15-5 this season and have an 11-3 conference record. They are also holding a 7-2 record when playing at home.

Northern State lost their last game to Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 25, but before that, they were riding a six-game winning streak.

MSU has lost their previous four games against the Wolves as well, with their last game being on Feb. 2, 2019, with the Mavericks losing 8880.

Minnesota State does hold the upper hand all-time, holding a record of 15-11.

Northern State is being led by Parker Fox, a player who is averaging 21.6 points per game and 9.2 rebounds per game. Another player who has helped the Wolves, has been Mason Stark, who’s averaging 15.1 points and

shooting 56.9% from the 3-point line.

On the Mavericks side of things, they are being led by senior Cameron Kirksey, who’s averaging 17.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

Mavericks women’s basketball takes on MSU Moorhead and Northern State JENNA PETERSON STAFF WRITER The Minnesota State Mavericks women’s basketball team has gotten back on a winning streak and the look to continue this when they travel to Moorhead and Aberdeen, South Dakota to play against the MSU Moorhead Dragons and the Northern State Wolves.

On Friday, the Mavericks will face the Dragons and the game history between the two has been in favor of the Mavericks, with the past 10 games having a record of 7-3.

This season, the Dragons hold a conference record of 9-5, which is close to the Mavericks 8-6. With the season records being so close, it may seem as if the game

could go to either team but looking at the Mavericks mentality over the past couple of games, they are more likely to come out on top.

On Saturday, MSU will travel south to play Northern State, who currently have a conference record of 7-7.

Looking at the game history between the two teams, the Wolves have won seven of the past 10 games, which puts the Mavericks at a slight disadvantage.

If the Mavericks are able to continue on improving their defense and focus on one play and possession at a time, just like they did this past weekend, they should be able to extend their winning streak.

Minnesota Timberwolves’ season recap before trade deadline ANDREW NEURURER SPORTS EDITOR The Minnesota Timberwolves are having a disappointing season, sitting 14th in the Western Conference with a record of 15-32.

After starting the season winning its first three games and sitting 10-8 on Nov. 27, the Wolves have started to plummet ever since.

In that stretch the team has experience long losing streaks, currently riding a 10-game skid after suffering an embarrassing loss to the Sacramento Kings on Jan. 27, after holding a 17-point lead with 2:49 left in the game.

The Timberwolves’ longest losing streak this season is 11 games, a span where they didn’t win a game in nearly a month. Things started to turn around after they finally won their first game on Dec. 26, winning five out of their eight games.

They will now look to end that losing streak on Saturday against the Los Angeles Clippers. This is head coach Ryan Saunders first year leading the team and will take some time for the team to adjust to their new fast paced, 3-point shooting offense.

While the season has held many disappointments, there has been two players that have been playing at a rather high level.

Karl-Anthony Towns is leading the team in scoring and sits ninth in the NBA with 26.9 points per game. He’s also averaging 10.7 points per game and has a career high with 4.2 assists. Towns

has had no troubles shooting the ball, shooting 51.1% from the field and 41.2% from the 3-point line.

Andrew Wiggins has taken a lot of scrutiny after the amount of hype surrounding him since entering the league and since he signed his max contract. After putting in a lot of work this season, Wiggins has played better and has been noticeably more engaged throughout games.

This year, he is averaging 22.9 points per game and is seeing career-highs with 5.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 0.9 blocks. A big revolution to his better play has been the coach slotting him as the point guard, which has helped him stay engaged and operate the offense. He is also shooting 44.8% from the field and 33.3% from distance.

Minnesota has struggled with finding offense or any sort of groove when Wiggins or Towns are not in the game.

Robert Covington has been hot-and-cold this season but is the team’s third leading scorer after Jeff Teague was traded recently for Allen Crabbe.

The trade deadline is fast approaching, as Minnesota will try and field offers before Feb. 6. The Timberwolves are sought to be active players at the deadline and the hot commodity will be Robert Covington.

With a mix of his 3-and-D play and his cheap contract, it’s been reported that several teams have been eyeing the former Tennessee State Tiger.

to select Jarrett Culver with the No. 6 overall pick. Culver has been hit or miss this season but has shown flashes of a potential two-way star.

Between Dec. 30 and Jan. 18, Culver scored double digits points in 11 straight games. He has done a good job on defense and has been getting to the rim for easy baskets. However, his shot is still a work in progress. Currently averaging 9.4 points per game, but is shooting 38.7% from the field, 27.7% from the 3-point line and 45.6% from the charity stripe.

Minnesota will need his contributions for them to break out of this slump and potentially make a run at the playoffs in the coming years.

While the playoffs don’t look to be in order for the Timberwolves, they will need to be active towards the Feb. 6, trade deadline to move into the offseason with a clear

goal in mind. There have been a lot of disappointments this season, but they have had some other bright moments.

Opinion: CTE is becoming a problem in football AARON YOUNG STAFF WRITER

The quarterback steps back, looking for a teammate to throw to and looks at all his options. Then opts to run down the field and slides to the ground. Out of nowhere, a defensive player collides helmet-to-helmet. Training staff members rush to the QB who lies motionless on the ground and a flag is thrown.

This is the norm and the NFL are addressing it. Players are at risk of getting a concussion and most of the time it’s the offensive players but they can happen to anyone.

In this NFL season, Andrew Luck retired two weeks before the regular season to the dismay of not only Indianapolis Colts fans but fantasy owners who drafted him.

He was looking out for himself and in the last five year, four players have retired for the same reason. ESPN showed a statistic explaining that tight end Rob Gronkowski, wide receiver Calvin Johnson, and line backers Luke Kuechly and Patrick Willis are all players in the NFL who retired by 30 years old.

According to the New York Times, Johnson was forced to repay the Detroit Lions $1 million of his signing bonus.

NFL players are willing to give up the money and sacrifice their dreams to preserve their shelf life. Outside of the NFL, WWE superstars, NHL players and athletes overall are all in danger of getting a concussion.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is defined as a progressive degenerative disease of the brain found in people with a history of repetitive brain trauma. The degenerative disease has been around since the 1920s, in the sport where the biggest blows occur.

What sport? Boxing. MMA and UFC are faced with this dilemma too. I suppose two people punching, kicking and choking each other to gain the victory is a productive way to determine who is the better athlete, right?

This problem is at the center of sports and forces players to retire early and move on to a life where their family is their first priority.

Coming full circle to the NFL, Roger Goodell and his minions/staff need to focus on the real issue which is the safety of their players.
