Homophobia between the sheets

Professor discusses myths relating to sexual identity ERIC SPRANKLE

contributor Question: My boyfriend is really into anal sex. Does this make him gay? Are you concerned that your boyfriend’s strong interest and arousal in butt play is a clue to a hidden sexual orientation? You are not alone in fearing this myth associated with sexual identity. I have heard similar versions of this question asked numerous times from both men and women. “My husband can’t get an erection anymore. Is he gay?” “Am I gay if I try to suck my own penis?” “Is it gay to want to have sex while listening to Lady Gaga?” You don’t need to be a sexuality expert to recognize where these questions

I argue that sexuality is not categorical at all and that it is our attempt to make it categorical that contributes to relational dysfunction and cultural discrimination. An even greater taboo than your boyfriend enjoying anal sex with you is if he suggested being the receptive partner during anal eroticism. This typically raises a rainbow f lag in most heterosexual relationships. A man’s anus has evolved into a “gay zone” in which any form of stimulation in the area automatically has the man (and his female partner) question his sexuality. In

A quick and simple question you should ask your boyfriend if you are legitimately concerned is if he wants to have anal sex with you or if he wants to have anal sex with a man. I’m assuming the requests or past behavior has been with you. I’m also assuming that he is not slipping and accidentally calling you “Rick” during anal sex. These are my assumptions. So if your boyfriend desires to have sex with you, where is the concern coming from? There are no such things as “gay behaviors” or “straight

into the bedroom. So the short answer to your question is, no. No, your boyfriend is not gay just because he enjoys anal sex. He is also not gay if he enjoys receiving anal sex. Because with this mentality, one could also question your sexuality. Think about it. It is assumed that the only sexual behavior gay men engage in is anal sex (which is not true). You are worried that your boyfriend is gay because he likes anal sex. However, since you are receiving anal sex, wouldn’t that mean you could be a gay man too? This is absurd of course. So relax, grab the lube, turn on some Lady Gaga, and continue enjoying the butt play.

decided to use the grant to purchase books for a resource library and to revamp the current worn and damaged furniture. The money will also be used to provide food and gas vouchers to struggling veterans and visitor parking vouchers. “These items were chosen because they are needs they have long been identified, but we previously did not have money to fund them,” Schrader said. In addition, the Veterans Center will use some of the funds to provide food for speakers and special events as well as create and purchase marketing materials. Schrader said that his favorite part about working in the Veterans Center is “watching returning veterans transform from being initially overwhelmed by the process of starting college and accessing their benefits to becoming successful, confident, and motivated students.”

fact, I have heard that the most extreme homophobic men are angry and ashamed of their own bowel movements. But how can a part of our anatomy be associated with our identity? The anus is full of pleasurable nerve endings regardless of our sexual orientation. There is no research to suggest that a gay man’s anus is different than his heterosexual counterpart. And furthermore, there is no research to suggest that receiving any form of anal stimulation will alter your sexual identity. Homophobia is not only detrimental to the LGBT community, but it is also destructive to heterosexual relationships by inserting unnecessary inhibitions

Mavericks salvage another series on Saturday www.msureporter.com/sports

MSU’s woes on Friday continued, but once again it rebounded on Saturday for the fourth series in a row, securing a split. JOEY DENTON

This past weekend featured some results that the Minnesota State, Mankato men’s hockey team has become familiar with, losing 1-2 on Friday before rebounding and winning 5-2 on Saturday. “That’s an okay weekend. There’s the old “split on the road” adage, where it’s always good to get points, but we knew how big a sweep would have been for this team,” MSU senior forward Joe Schiller said. “We could have pulled ahead of Bemidji, so losing Friday is disappointing; especially given the opportunities we missed.” This is the Mavericks fourth weekend in a row they have lost narrowly in Friday’s first game of a series before not only winning, but sometimes dominating in Saturday’s game. “We’re at a loss right now trying to explain our struggles,” Schiller said. “The flip side of that, though, is winning every Saturday, which is obviously good to finish weekends Photo Courtesy of Sport Pix strong.” Due to an injury to senior Senior captain Michael Dorr notched his fifth and sixth goals Saturday goalie Austin Lee in the Wisagainst Bemidji State. Dorr also picked up an assist in MSU’s 5-2 win.

MSU falls to Winona, downs Peacocks in OT REECE HEMMESCH

After losing a tough game to rival Winona State Friday night, the Minnesota State, Mankato men’s basketball team survived a furious comeback from Upper Iowa to defeat the Peacocks in an overtime thriller 98-93. “It’s a big thrill to play in a game like that,” sophomore forward Connor O’Brien said of the MSU victory. “It was one of those games where every possession mattered and we had to perform at our best level.” The win came after the Mavericks dropped a lopsided battle to WSU, who is currently first in the NSIC and sixth in the nation. Winona trounced MSU on Friday night 85-63. The hot-handed Warriors shot more than 69 percent from the field and had four players score in double-digits, compared to MSU’s three. Sophomore guard Jimmy Whitehead would be the scoring leader for MSU, recording 15 points, while freshman forward Zach Romashko would again

contribute big for the Mavericks with 13 points. O’Brien also chipped in with 12 off the bench for the Mavericks. The loss was soon forgotten, as MSU was able to get back in its groove and claim the victory over UI on Saturday night. The Mavericks started off the game with a season-high 50 first half points to give them a ninepoint lead heading into the locker room. The margin would stay around that region until late in the second half, when the Peacocks trimmed the lead down to five with four minutes to play. The game would go back and forth for the next four minutes until Upper Iowa had the ball trailing by three, with 19 seconds left. The Peacocks put the ball in the hands of junior forward Sam Elgin, who proceeded to drain the game-tying three with just over nine seconds remaining. MSU’s last-second attempt did not fall and the game proceeded into overtime. “Upper Iowa kept battling

all game long and hit some very big shots,” O’Brien said. “We failed to hit some free throws to put them away and they had the momentum to force the game into overtime.” In the extra period the teams would again go back and forth for the first three minutes, until MSU sophomore Travis Meinders drained a big three to push the Mavericks’ lead to six. The Mavericks did not look back from there, icing the game with a pair of free throws to receive the W. O’Brien was definitely the star of the show on Saturday night as well. He would score 17 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the field. He also added 13 rebounds to make Saturday’s game his fifth double-double of the season. Senior Stephen Kirschbaum would score team-high 26 points in the victory, while Romashko once again would score 23 points to tie his single-game high in his young career. The Mavericks are now 7-12 overall this season and 6-9 in conference play.

consin series back in mid-January, junior goalie Phil Cook has gotten his chance to fill in, and boy he has filled the spot very nicely. In his five starts since the injury to Lee, Cook has earned himself three wins and has been averaging 31.8 saves per game. Since Cook has been performing so well, it brings out the question, should he continue to be the starting guy when Lee comes back? “Cook has been excellent for us, but I don’t think that necessarily means we write off our other goalies,” Schiller said. “We’ll get Austin Lee back from injury soon, and it never hurts to have a couple solid goalies down the stretch.” In Friday night’s game, the Mavericks took the first lead of the game when freshman forward Max Gaede scored the second goal of his collegiate career at 8:58 of the first period off a pass from senior forward Michael Dorr. Unfortunately, that would be the Mavericks only goal,

and the Beavers had enough time to take the lead and win the game after BSU’s Jordan George rebounded a tremendous save by Cook and put it in the back of the net at 9:46 of the third period. Dorr just went off in Saturday’s game, tallying three points with two goals and an assist on the eventual winning goal. Reigning WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, junior forward Eriah Hayes, continued his hot streak by scoring the game’s first goal at 1:50 of the second period. After Bemidji tied it up, Door scored the first of his two goals at the 10:14 mark, and sophomore forward Zach Lehrke gave the Mavericks a 3-1 lead 15:00 into the second. The Beavers just kept hanging on, but Dorr and the Mavericks were too much for them, holding them off to win 5-2. With the victory on Saturday night, the Mavericks improved to 9-18-1 overall and 5-14-1 in WCHA play. MSU hosts Michigan Tech this weekend.

Making Known the Unknown CAITLYN SCHMID | staff writer

U

p and coming indie rock singer/songwriter Keith Lynch has reached a new high this year. Being a one-man band by the name of Unknown Component, he has shot upwards in the music industry. Dishing out album after album, with utter determination, nothing seems to slow him down. With his recent album, The Infinite Definitive, he is gaining even more hype than ever. Exploding with 10 songs and two exclusive, unreleased bonus tracks that will keep your head bobbing, your foot tapping and your leg shaking. This indie rock singer/ songwriter portrays multiple differences in each song off the new album, which recently hit the Internet. “I released many albums dating all the way back from 2002 until my new album in 2010,” said Lynch after being asked about all the independent albums that he has made. With an assortment of different musical instruments, Unknown Component brings a fresh sound to the table. Having taught himself how to play all of the instruments, Lynch perfectly intertwines sick guitar solos and rhythmic drumbeats set in perfect harmony with some smooth piano melodies. “I didn’t know how to play anything,” said Lynch. “I taught myself how to play guitar and years ago I just wrote a song.” With his impressive musical/vocal abilities, he is able to create any form of music that he wants. Not only does he play every single instrument in Unknown Component, but he also writes all of the songs. This gives great incite into his writing process, which he describes as “weird,” and claims he is different than he used to be. Lynch says he doesn’t want

to sound like everybody else and wants to be his own person. Lynch plays a huge role because he is the band, and he does a pretty great job at it. “I was in a band in high school, but it would have never worked out because they weren’t in it for the long run,” he explains. Although reminiscing about the past, Lynch is very happy with his decision to go alone. No need to rely on or trust anyone but himself and that’s the way it’s going be for the rest of his music career. “[My goal is to find] new answers to questions that no one has answered.” Explaining that philosophy is a huge part of his music and part of his inspiration to write the way he does. Plus never having been in any type of choir in high school, he spoke about how he always just liked singing, but never really thought of the idea of building a career out of it. Lynch has made the option to “pay-as-much-asyou-want” for Infinite Definitive online. It gets his music out into the world, which is the point. Unknown Component is working hard and gaining positive reactions from our music listeners as he continues to maximize his revenue and albums popularity. “[Pay-what-you-want] worked well for Radiohead, but I’m probably not going to do that next time around,” Lynch said. He mentioned that as long as the album gets out there, and whoever wants to support it can, that’s fine with him. The music from his new album The Infinite Definitive and others will be a big hit in his upcoming show on Saturday, Feb. 4th, at the Midtown Tavern in Old Town Mankato.

A Night on the Town - OR -

Experiencing Mankato Culture through the Eyes of One of its Own EMRE ERKU | staff writer

H

ere in Mankato, we college students have the burden of endless responsibilities. We must study and maintain a healthy academic status while paying back loans with menial jobs and countless hours of wasted time. We must graduate and make our parents happy and our friends proud. We must take on this cruel world of ours with a strong heart and a sound mind. Everything is being thrown at us face first. This well-known fact can be a bit disconcerting. So along this winding road of uncertainty; this eye-popping journey of self-discovery, we encounter unwanted stress. The only way to relieve this stress is by going out for a little rest and relaxation. Every weekend we turn the volume up to top-notch and go where the wind takes us. We forget ourselves and get lost in the moment. The music in our ears and the friends by our sides help us cope with all the aggravation. Yours truly, indeed, took full advantage of such stress relieving behavior by traveling the dangerous roads of a fantastic Friday night voyage. I followed the music, and I followed the beer. Fair warning though, things did get out of hand. Out of hand? Yes, but doesn’t it always? That’s what happens when you crack open your first Budweiser at 7 p.m. and start jamming Metallica at full volume before being picked up by your roommate to go to a kegger. And yes, that’s what I did to begin my Friday night, so please don’t judge me. Anyways, when the long arm of the clock struck a new hour I was in no time on my way to the notorious houses of the downtown Mankato area. Ah yes, down to taste the ice cold beers of a freshly tapped keg, down to gaze into the pretty eyes on the pretty faces of the many fine women this beautiful university holds, and down to get sucked into the pits of a speaker and lose myself in the tunes. Down for a good time and hopefully, some cherished memories. A keg party, for you freshman out there, is by far the best place to have the most fun you will ever have in college. This keg party certainly fit the description. As I entered the front door I was greeted by $5 plastic cups and a finger pointing towards the bathroom where the metallic barrel of beer sat on the porcelain bottom of a bathtub. Several beers later I found myself manning the music being playing in the living room, which was packed full of finely inebriated college men and women. Only one song came to mind as I stared at the keyboard of the laptop connected to the stereo, Neil Diamond’s “Sweet

Caroline.” I put it on and the entire place erupted. Everyone lifted their beers to the ceiling and sang along at the top of their lungs as the music played. “Sweet Caaarrrooline! Bah Bah Baaaaahhh!” It was magnificent. The display of such drunken togetherness was ecstatic. The music and, of course, the beer brought all these strangers together for a fine memory. Sure enough, though, the keg inevitably ran out. The music stopped, and I had to press on. So I zipped my jacket up, and headed for the bars with a cold, lonely walk to the bright lights of the treacherous Mankato watering holes. Disaster was sure to come. Rounders. Piss my pants, I’m drunk, Rounders. Just a hot a mess of shot-downing, beer-chugging, young college inebriates looking for lust, love, whatever. I bought a beer and found a few of my acquaintances sitting at a booth. Much of the music in the background included Nickelback, Beck, and mainstream pop and hip-hop. We all sang along to the songs until my buddy stood up on the table and yelled, “This is what I do to attractive chicks!” Security wasted no time in kicking us out. So there I was. Tip-top tipsy, standing outside in the cold, itching for more music and yes, more beer. This time I wanted live music, and this time I wanted cheap beer. So to Red Sky Lounge I went, a grin on my face as I passed frisky girls and their intimidating boyfriends, wild drunks and the occasional bum. Downtown Mankato at midnight, a zoo. At Red Sky Lounge was a blues band, Nathan Miller and the Unstoppable Company. At the level that I was at I fell right in their music which was a hard-edged blues sound. I even managed to land a quick interview with lead singer, Max Kirkeide. We both downed a shot of Jagermeister, and I sloppily asked him what their music was all about. “Our music is about having fun and being free. We try to make the modern blues sound and share a common spot with blues that all great music stems from,” said Kirkeide. After he said this, he went back on stage and finished his show, which was incredible to say the least. I finally had enough to drink and left. I took a cab home and passed out on the couch while listening to the album, Rubber Soul by The Beatles. When I awoke the next morning, I realized how special this town really is. The people, the music, everything. I’ll never forget this wonderful place. I hope none of us do, and I hope we continue to relieve our stress with such fun, and may we never grow old.
