GABE HEWITT Staff Writer The season five episode of the sitcom A Different World titled “The Cat’s in the Cradle” starts out innocently. One of the main African American characters playful-
ly bets a group of Caucasian football fans of the opposing team that his team will win. After the Caucasian fans lose their bet, the episode takes a turn when one of them begins spray painting a racial slur on the African American character’s car. This episode was shown at a recent meeting for the student group Black Intelligent Gentlemen (BIG). It was followed by a discussion described as a “feelings session” by President Abdul Nakumbe. BIG meets on Tues-
days at 6 p.m. in CSU 238. BIG was founded in 2011 on the ideal of improving the lives of African American males in the college system. “Historically, people of color have been less likely to enter college and once they enter, they are half as likely to graduate,” Nakumbe said. “The goal of BIG is to give our members the tools they need to not only survive college, but to thrive in this institution of higher learning.” Since its inception, BIG has been a median for discussion
of race and diversity issues on all levels as well as a resource for struggling students. While the group’s name may contain the words “black” and “gentlemen,” its membership is open to all demographics. Nakumbe is finishing up his second term as the group’s president. In addition to planning a number of diversity-related events for the 2015-2016 year, he and his
