Students raise over $20,000 during Mavathon

Led by different Morale Captains, each team was led through a number of games

and events in order to continue raising money as the night proceeded. Highlights of the night included games

like Face the Cookie, a scavenger hunt and a live DJ who got people up and dancing throughout the night. With

set up beginning as early as 8 a.m. going until 11 p.m., the event had numerous volunteers working to ensure that the program went smoothly.

An event of this magnitude does not happen overnight.

The executive board behind the organization had been working since the beginning of the academic year in order to ensure that progress moved smoothly in the coordination of the fundraiser.

Meeting every week, each respective chair would update everyone and bring forward new ideas for how to raise money for the fundraiser. In addition to making packets and assigning business for each position, positions like sponsorship chair were re-

MNSU’s atheist club believes in the right to not believe ANAROSE HART-THOMAS STAFF WRITER Each week, the Mavericks Atheist/Agnostic Secular Students gather in the basement of Armstrong Hall to discuss topics of interest presented by its club members.

Dalton Campbell, a thirdyear finance major, explained a typical meeting as, “We have a rotation of officers who make their own PowerPoints about a particular subject. Last week we did one on where morality comes from.”

Meetings are conducted in an open forum fashion where members can openly discuss their minds. The club participates in ‘Ask an Atheist Day’ as well that happens twice a year. On those days, anyone can ask questions about atheism to atheists.

John Arsenault, a senior studying history, said, “For me, it is a place of free thought. It is not so much

about one thing like atheism, but a place to openly discuss religion and theology.”

Frank Vondura, a sophomore transfer student studying music industry and theater design, added, “It is a group of people to see each week that are different from the norm who have interesting mindsets and views on things.”

MASS has existed in some way on campus for roughly 10 years, but was revamped two years ago to be the group it is today. “When I came here, I was looking for an atheist club but there was nothing.

There were 20-plus religious organizations, so the goal was to have something for secular people, so they didn’t have to feel ostracized,” Raghen Lucy, the club president, said.

Campbell defined atheist and agnostic as, “Atheist to me, deals with the lack of the belief in God, whereas

Veteran’s Resource Center to host financial assistance event KAITLYN JORGENSEN STAFF WRITER The Veteran’s Resource Center will be hosting an event entitled “Planning for your Future? The Time to Act is Now” on Thursday in the Centennial Student Union room 203.

The financial planning event will serve food, and the floor will be opened up for questions until 1 p.m. The guest speaker for the event is Jack Culbertson, a former MNSU student and a current financial planner with Northwestern Mutual. He is also a United States Marine Corps veteran.

The event is being organized by volunteers Isaac Cammack, a veteran of the U.S. Army, and Jade Hengel, a current member of the Army National Guard. While Culbertson has expertise in military benefits, the event is free, and open to anyone

interested including civilian students and community members.

The event will discuss budget building, savings plans including the thrift savings plans and allotments offered to military personnel and veterans, and making the most of one’s veteran’s benefits.

“It’s never too late to start planning for your future,” Cammack said. “A lot of students are oblivious to things that will help them be financially stable in the future. The majority of people when they get old say they wish they could go back and invest more, especially with big life events like kids, mortgages, etc.”

The secret to saving is by starting a little bit at a time Cammack advised. “That $50 you spend on drinks Friday night would be better put in a savings account where it can add up over time and help you become financially stable,” Cammack said.

Veteran’s benefits can be confusing applying for and sorting through all the paperwork. “The hardest part for me was not knowing who to talk to around campus,” Cammack said. “Culbertson is great at his job as a financial advisor and he can help you find the right people to talk to. He is great at helping veterans, enlisted, or ROTC students find resources and set them up for success.”

Another key part of the presentation will feature managing money and setting a monthly budget. “College students in general have a hard time managing money, because no one is telling them what to do anymore,” Hengel said. “This is especially true for military students who are fresh out of basic training or veterans coming off of active duty. You go from having strict discipline

to being able to do whatever you want, and it’s easy to spend money without having a plan in place.”

Women’s Center want minority students be proud of their hair HELLEN AKINYI STAFF WRITER An event focused on the beauty of the black women’s hair, how to take care of it, and some ways black women can style their curls, called “Hair Me Out” was held on campus Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Shadow Rolan, the grad program advisor in the Women’s Center, organized the event as part of the Black History Month events to celebrate the curls black women have and was hosted in the

Women’s Center in the Centennial Student Union. She wanted to talk all things hair based on the “stereotypes” surrounding it.

“The reason I planned this event is because there has been a lot of controversy and discrimination around black people’s hair,” Rolan said.

“And most of the black students I spoke with started to feed into those negative stereotypes about black [people’s] hair.”

She talked about how versatile and unique the black women’s hair is and it being

Black History Month, she had to remind people of that.

She had different hairstyles black girls could attain with their hair, as well as what products to use depending with the hair texture. She moisturized her hair with the products she had and styled different hairstyles, showing how easy it is to attain the looks. She even gifted some of the products out to the audience.

The CROWN Act is a bill that most states in the U.S. are trying to pass to avoid discrimination against natural

hair across all field from work place to school. The act did play a role into allowing black men and women into embracing their curls.

Rolan talked about her own journey about her hair.

“My hair is definitely something I came to love later in life,” said Rolan.

Despite Rolan growing up in a family of a hairstylist and constantly changing her hair, it took her a while to fully embrace her curls. “When I became older was when I fully loved the kinky curls on my head,” Rolan said.

Apart from showcasing the different simple styles one could achieve, the event also focused on healthier ways to take care of the curls, which would enable one to fully embrace them as they follow on along the journey. “I am still embracing my natural hair but I love black hair and the many styles we can wear,” Rolan said.

Rolan finally added that she embraced her curls as she got older, mainly because one gets to know more about their hair as they age.

University celebrates Anthropology Day KAITLYN JORGENSEN STAFF WRITER The Department of Anthropology at Minnesota State University, Mankato hosted their annual Anthropology Day Thursday, Feb. 20.

Students and community members were invited to visit with the faculty and enter a lucky draw for the chance to win prizes.

They then had an open house in Trafton North, followed by a special presen-

He is currently the consulting archaeologist for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Tribal Historic Preservation office and has also served as the principal investigator for the Tribal Cultural Survey of the proposed replacement of the Enbridge Line 3 oil pipeline.

The presentation discussed the early archaeology investigations and history of the Mille Lacs area and the challenges archaeologists have faced in investigating the significance of human interaction with the landscape and their importance in U.S. heritage.

The Mille Lacs area has unique geographic settings which has led to continuing research in the area. Cummings also discussed present day relations with the Native American tribe as well as protocols for archaeological inquiry and traditional Native

One student who is minoring in anthropology talked about the significance of celebrating anthropology.

“I think it’s important to celebrate World Anthropology Day because not a lot of people know what anthropology is,” the student said.

“There are so many things you can do within the realm of anthropology, and this celebration helps introduce students to the major and minor programs at MNSU.” The American Anthropological Association is the world’s largest organization of professional anthropologists.

The AAA hosts World Anthropology Day on the third Thursday in February every year, and it has been celebrated annually at MNSU since 2015.

Public memorial service remembers the private Kobe Bryant LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kobe Bryant’s wife remembered him as a devoted father and husband who arrived early for school pickups and wrote heartfelt cards and letters.

Rob Pelinka, Bryant’s longtime agent and close friend, recalled his final texts from the NBA superstar minutes before he was killed last month in a helicopter crash.

Bryant was attempting to secure an internship for the daughter of another friend who was sitting with him in the chopper.

Michael Jordan called Bryant “a little brother” and said that when he died, “a piece of me died.”

Bryant’s athletic achievements were only part of the reason roughly 20,000 people gathered Monday for a public memorial service honoring him at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.

The event offered another chance to celebrate Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and the other seven victims of the crash with tears, memories and laughs.

Los Angeles already knew Bryant was much more than a basketball icon. His friends and family told the world.

“I couldn’t see him as a celebrity, nor just an incredible basketball player,” Vanessa Bryant said. “He was my sweet husband and the beau-

The ceremony included musical numbers by Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera. The event concluded with a screening of “Dear Basketball,” Bryant’s Academy Award-winning short film about reluctantly saying goodbye to his passion upon his retirement from the Lakers in 2016.

Fans, many wearing Bryant’s jersey or team colors,

filled the seats at the arena where Bryant played for the final 17 seasons of a two-decade NBA career spent entirely with Los Angeles’ most popular sports franchise.

The mourners included Lakers legends Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson and Pau Gasol. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver joined Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Phil Jackson, Dwyane Wade and dozens of current NBA players. Celebrities such as Kanye West, Kim Kar-

dashian, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez also attended.

After Jimmy Kimmel welcomed the crowd, Vanessa Bryant provided a poignant window into the family’s life with Gianna and her three sisters — Natalia, Bianka and Capri. She emphasized Kobe Bryant’s paternal devotion, which had only grown after his retirement from the Lakers.

“God knew they couldn’t be on this Earth without each

other,” said Vanessa Bryant, who had been with Kobe since 1999. “He had to bring them home to have them together. Babe, you take care of our Gigi. And I got Nati, Bibi and Coco. We’re still the best team.”

Vanessa Bryant was followed on the podium by basketball stars Diana Taurasi and Sabrina Ionescu and University of Connecticut women’s coach Geno Auriemma.

Kobe Bryant was a passionate advocate for women’s basketball, and Gigi Bryant was a promising young player who aspired to play at UConn.

“If I represented the present of the women’s game, Gigi represented the future, and Kobe knew it,” said Ionescu, the Oregon star who was mentored by Bryant.

Pelinka referred to the day of the crash as “when the axis of the world seemed to shift forever, for all of us.” Pelinka was also Gigi Bryant’s godfather, and the families were close.

He revealed that Bryant had texted him asking for help in getting an internship with a baseball agent for teenager Alexis Altobelli, who lost her parents and younger sister in the crash.

“Kobe lived to make other people’s lives better, all the way up to his final text,” Pelinka said.

Pioneering black NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson dies Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who calculated rocket trajectories and earth orbits for NASA’s early space missions and was later portrayed in the 2016 hit film “Hidden Figures,” about pioneering black female aerospace workers, has died. She was 101.

Johnson died Monday of natural causes at a retirement community in Newport News, Virginia, family attorney Donyale Y. H. Reavis told The Associated Press.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement that Johnson “helped our nation enlarge the frontiers of space even as she made huge strides that also opened doors for women and people of color.”

Johnson was one of the “computers” who solved equations by hand during NASA’s early years and those of its precursor organization, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.

Johnson and other black women initially worked in a racially segregated computing unit in Hampton, Virginia,

that wasn’t officially dissolved until NACA became NASA in 1958. Signs had dictated which bathrooms the women could use.

Johnson focused on airplanes and other research at first. But her work at NASA’s Langley Research Center eventually shifted to Project Mercury, the nation’s first human space program.

“Our office computed all the (rocket) trajectories,” Johnson told The Virginian-Pilot newspaper in 2012.

“You tell me when and where you want it to come down, and I will tell you where and when and how to launch it.”

In 1961, Johnson did trajectory analysis for Alan Shepard’s Freedom 7 Mission, the first to carry an American into space. The next year, she manually verified the calculations of a nascent NASA computer, an IBM 7090, which plotted John Glenn’s orbits around the planet.

“Get the girl to check the numbers,” a computer-skeptical Glenn had insisted in the days before the launch.

“Katherine organized herself immediately at her desk, growing phone-book-thick stacks of data sheets a number at a time, blocking out everything except the labyrinth of trajectory equations,” Margot Lee Shetterly wrote in her 2016 book “Hidden Figures,” on which the film is based.

“It took a day and a half of watching the tiny digits pile up: eye-numbing, disorienting work,” Shetterly wrote.

Shetterly told the AP that Johnson was “exceptional in every way.”

“The wonderful gift that Katherine Johnson gave us is that her story shined a light on the stories of so many other people,” Shetterly said Monday. “She gave us a new way to look at black history, women’s history and American history.”

Johnson considered her work on the Apollo moon missions to be her greatest contribution to space exploration. Her calculations helped the lunar lander rendezvous with the orbiting command service module.

She also worked on the Space

Shuttle program before retiring in 1986.

Johnson and her co-workers had been relatively unsung heroes of America’s Space Race. But in 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Johnson — then 97 — the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

The “Hidden Figures” book and film followed, telling the stories of Johnson,

Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, among others.

Johnson was portrayed in the film by actress Taraji P. Henson. The film was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar and grossed more than $200 million worldwide.

In 2017, Johnson was brought on stage at the Academy Awards ceremony to thunderous applause.

Jackson and Vaughan had died in 2005 and 2008.

inception. That night in the ballroom, she and her family were able to share how they benefit from the hard work of everyone involved in the community who put Mavathon together. After showing a video and how the dance marathon has changed her life, her mother was able to share that the wheelchair-accessible park used by kids in the community is receiving updates this year.

Catcalling dehumanizes, objectifies and humiliates

MICHAEL MCSHANE NEWS EDITOR In the age where #MeToo has enveloped our society and how women are treated both in public and in the professional setting, there is one action that needs addressing – catcalling.

While not a woman myself, you don’t have to be a girl to understand why catcalling someone as they pass by on the street or are simply minding their own business is not only rude but severely offensive.

No woman is ever going to appreciate catcalling, it’s not how you properly approach someone.

While some can pass catcalling off as just some stupid thing some people do and each party goes their separate ways, that scenario doesn’t always happen.

Sometimes, the person doing the catcalling wants an actual response, and when they don’t get the answer they want things can go from cringey to dangerous.

That scenario is one I witnessed in person Friday when I saw what many would consider at the very least sexual harassment.

What I witnessed firsthand was a group of intoxicated men trying to sweet talk to two women in the worst way possible. The women obviously were not reciprocating

I hope the “Me Too Movement” showed the severity of such a problem that affects both genders.

I will never know if I had just watched those two women’s most terrifying experience in their lives, it very well could have. What I wish is for the men who harassed those women to know that they very well did scare those women and that their actions have long lasting consequences.

Generational split among SC black voters could hurt Biden

MICHAEL MCSHANE NEWS EDITOR Now that Bernie Sanders has become the front-runner for the Democratic Party’s nomination in the 2020 election, those who are against his candidacy are now coming out of the woodworks trying to find ways to bring the 78-year old senator from Vermont down, no matter it is.

Take for instance MSNBC commentator Chris Matthews, who learned quickly why comparing a Jewish politician’s campaign win in the Nevada Caucus to the Nazi invasion of France was a very, very bad idea.

Matthews apologized not long after making the comparison, but it shows that many people are not happy with the rise of Bernie Sanders.

I for one think that in politics, everyone should have the ability to share their opinion and who they think the nominee should be.

But right now, we are bearing witness to the Democratic establishment essentially coming together to bring down a candidate with a large following and a history of establishment meddling and history may end up repeating like last time.

There is no denying that many in the Democratic establishment had a hand in Bernie Sanders loss to for-

mer Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, that was well documented and showed the general public many Democratic leaders were and still are not a fan of Sanders.

Of course the front-runner of any nomination is going to be looked at with a large lens, but the way I look at it, Democratic leadership and many in the media are looking at Sanders with a microscope like a little kid incinerating an ant.

When Joe Biden was the front-runner, whenever he messed up or said something he should’ve of, many in the media tried to play it off as Biden being ol’Biden.

Sanders is not a perfect candidate, the U.S. will never get a perfect candidate ever in this election and in any election in the future, but I think we should treat each candidate with respect, criticize their policies and choices professionally and instead of fearing a Sanders nomination, try to understand how he got the nomination to begin with.

One of the biggest mistakes the Democratic Party made in 2016 was alienating Sanders supporters and Sanders himself. They didn’t give his candidacy the benefit of the doubt. That is why many Sanders supporters didn’t vote for Clinton in November.

It very well looks like the Democratic Party has not learned their lesson and a possible repeat of 2016 could very well happen.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — For James Felder, the question of which presidential candidate to support in the South Carolina primary has never been terribly complicated. The 80-year-old civil rights activist has always backed Joe Biden, appreciative of the eight years he spent as the No. 2 to the first black president.

But when Felder opened a recent forum at historically black Benedict College to questions, students in the room weren’t so convinced.

J’Kobe Kelley-Mills, a junior English major, said he was torn between Biden and Bernie Sanders, the progressive Vermont senator who is now the Democratic front-runner after strong performances in the first three primary contests.

“They both have decades of political experience,” Kelley-Mills said of Biden and Sanders, adding that most of his friends were siding with the senator. “They’re going to really know how to communicate with people on the other side of the aisle in the Senate and I think that if we can get them in there, we can finally start to see the government start to move forward.”

A national Washington Post-Ipsos poll conducted in January found Sanders with an advantage among black voters under 35, even as Biden had a big lead among black Democratic voters overall. That poll was conducted before any of the primary contests began.

The generational split among African American voters in South Carolina parallels the divide seen among whites and Latinos in early contests, with Sanders polling stronger among younger voters. The challenge for Sanders will be to generate enough turnout

among those younger voters, who historically turn out at rates far lower than their elders.

After a second place finish in Nevada, Biden quickly focused his campaign on South Carolina over the weekend.

He told parishioners at a black church in North Charleston that the election can “rip out the roots of systemic racism” if voters help him win the Democratic nomination.

Greg Wilkins’ Art Exhibit looks to start a conversation KIERAN KUEHN STAFF WRITER Between February 7th and February 23rd, local artist and associate director of Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Student Activities office, Greg Wilkins, displayed a monumental artwork at the Carnegie Art Center in downtown Mankato, Minnesota.

This artwork was in several parts, however the keystones of it were a fabric cross draped down from the ceiling with mass shooting locations and casualty statistics embroidered into it, and the several meter Donald Trump face painted on plastic wrap stretched between two pillars. The piece, labeled thoughts and prayers, was an interactive work that invited viewers to partake in the art experience, whilst provoking the viewer to consider the state of mass shootings in the United States.

In the 16 days the piece was up, it constantly evolved as more and more people engage with it, adding their own touches. By the end, the Donald Trump face was covered in anything and everything from slogans to obscenities, mustaches to genitalia, and originating

from members of both sides of the political spectrum.

When asked about the purpose of “Thoughts and Prayers” and the political implications behind a giant Trump head, Mr. Wilkins replied that “Often people don’t realize that all art is political, and even if it is just a flower vase, it is still making

a statement, and maybe that statement is just I like flowers. The personal is the political, and you cannot escape from it. That has happened throughout history, with regards to works of art.”

He mentioned an instance where an individual was watching as the project was set up, saw a cross and a

large, demigod like Trump face and thought, due to their own preconceived notions, that it was a pro Trump event. Mr. Wilkins assured them that it was neither pro nor anti Trump in nature and was only meant to provoke thought.

When asked about the local student community,

Anime Club relaxes with anime jeopardy AMANDA FILREIS STAFF WRITER On Thursday February 20, the Anime Club hosted from 4 to 6 p.m. in Armstrong, room 101. Due to technical difficulties, this had to be moved to room 102, next door. Once the presentation was all set up, it was time for the introductions.

The first to speak was the president, Katelyn Karrow.

Then came her fellow members and hosts of the afternoon: Grant Lindeman, Emily Yang, and Sam Oas. The game being played during this meeting was Anime Jeopardy. Similar to regular jeopardy, there were a total of 6 different categories with 5 multiple choice

questions in each category to choose from, ranging from 200 being the easiest and 1000 being the hardest. All but one of the categories were the different genres to choose from in anime.

These were the Studio Ghibli movies, Horror, Action, Romance, Slice of life, and finally Isekai.

For those who are unfamiliar with the term, Isekai refers to a genre similar to a fish out of water concept.

Instead of a mythical or other worldly character coming to our world, this genre focuses on a main character from a world much like ours being transported to a new unfamiliar world.

The audience was split into 2 teams on either side of the room. After the coin toss,

“We would like both avid and casual fans alike to join in this super fun club filled with activities everyone can participate in and enjoy.”

Basing this off of the reactions the audience had, it’s safe to assume they succeed in their goal during this presentation.

‘A new day’: Harvey Weinstein convicted, led away in cuffs NEW YORK (AP) — Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was convicted of rape and sexual assault against two women and led off to prison in handcuffs Monday in what his foes hailed as a landmark moment for the legal system and a long-overdue reckoning for the man vilified as the biggest monster of the #MeToo era.

The 67-year-old Weinstein had a look of resignation on his face as he heard the verdict: guilty on two charges, not guilty on a set of more

serious ones.

While it was not the acrossthe-board victory prosecutors and his accusers had hoped for, it could put the stooped and feeble-looking Weinstein behind bars for the rest of his life. The charges carry up to 29 years in prison.

District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. saluted the women who came forward against the once-feared studio boss, saying they “changed the course of history in the fight against sexual violence” and “pulled our justice system into the 21st century.”

“This is the new landscape for survivors of sexual assault in America, I believe, and it is a new day. It is a new day because Harvey Weinstein has finally been held accountable for crimes he committed,” Vance said.

Weinstein’s lawyers said they will appeal.

“Harvey is unbelievably strong. He took it like a man,” defense attorney Donna Rotunno said. “He knows that we will continue to fight for him, and we know that this is not over.”

I’m innocent. How could this happen in America?”

The jury of seven men and five women took five days to find Weinstein guilty of raping an aspiring actress in a New York City hotel room in 2013 and sexually assaulting production assistant Mimi Haleyi at his apartment in 2006 by forcibly performing oral sex on her.

He was acquitted on the most serious charges, two counts of predatory sexual assault, each carrying up to life in prison. Both of those counts hinged on the testimony of “Sopranos” actress Annabella Sciorra, who said Weinstein barged into her apartment, raped her and forcibly performed oral sex on her in the mid-1990s.

Judge James Burke ordered Weinstein taken to jail immediately. Court officers handcuffed Weinstein and put their arms under his, leading him unsteadily out of the courtroom via a side door without the use of the walker he relied on for much of the trial. He was later taken from the courthouse in an ambulance, strapped to a stretcher in his suit, in what was believed to be just a precautionary measure, and taken to a locked unit at Bellevue

Hospital.

The judge said he will ask that Weinstein, who had been free on bail since his arrest nearly two years ago, be held in the jail’s infirmary after his lawyers said he needs medical attention following unsuccessful back surgery.

Sentencing was set for March 11. The sexual assault charge carries up to 25 years in prison, while the third-degree rape count is punishable by up to four years. (The jury acquitted Weinstein of first-degree rape, which requires the use of force or the threat of it, and found him guilty of third-degree rape, which involves a lack of consent.)

The verdict followed weeks of often harrowing and excruciatingly graphic testimony from a string of accusers who told of rapes, forced oral sex, groping, masturbation, lewd propositions and excuses from Weinstein about how the Hollywood casting couch works. In addition to the three women he was charged with attacking, three more who said they were assaulted

by Weinstein testified in an effort by prosecutors to show a pattern of brutish behavior.

Whispers about Weinstein circulated in Hollywood for years before they finally turned into a torrent of accusations in 2017 that destroyed his career and gave rise to #MeToo.

Men’s hockey dominates Chargers at home

Women’s hockey team fell to No. 3-ranked Golden Gophers in regular season finale ANDREW NEURURER SPORTS EDITOR The Minnesota State Mavericks men’s hockey team had themselves a weekend against the Alabama Huntsville Chargers, defeating them 10-0 and 8-0 on Friday and Saturday respectively.

The Mavericks have improved to 28-4-2 and now sit with a conference record of 21-3-1. As for the Chargers, they now are 2-24-6 and are still looking for their first win on the road.

Minnesota State played consistently through each period, scoring three goals each through the first two periods and ending the third period with four more. To get things started, senior Charlie Gerard scored a goal late in the first period, assisted by senior Marc Michaelis and sophomore Andrew Carroll.

Almost a minute later, sophomore Julian Napravnik pushed the Mavericks lead to two, after he was assisted by seniors Josh French and Parker Toumie. As the first

period was coming to an end, senior Ian Scheid joined the party with his second goal of the season.

The three Mavericks to score in the second period was Toumie, freshman Lucas Sowder and a powerplay goal from Napravnik.

In the third period, Carroll opened things up shortly after two minutes passed and pushed the team’s lead to seven. Toumie then scored his second goal of the game about four minutes later.

Michaelis scored on the powerplay after the Chargers’ Ben Allen went to the box for tripping.

To end the game and top the game off with 10 goals for a season high, Junior Walker Duehr scored his third goal of the season.

After Friday night’s big game, the Mavericks came out and won 8-0 against the Chargers on the night Minnesota State honored Toumie, Gerard, Scheid, Michaelis, Nicholas Rivera, Edwin Hookenson and Josh French - the hockey team’s seven seniors.

Women’s basketball sweeps, men’s falls short MEL STRAMM STAFF WRITER

Last weekend, the Minnesota State Mavericks men and women’s basketball team played the Upper Iowa Peacocks on Feb. 21 and then the Winona State Warriors on Feb. 22.

Unfortunately, the team lost both days in two hard fought games. The women however were able to come up on top, beating both teams in dominating fashion.

On Friday, the men’s team was able to finish the first half with a 43-31 lead, with 13 points by senior Cameron Kirksey and 10 from freshman Corvon Seales. They also had the 25-11 advantage on rebounds entering the second half.

Dominating the 3-point line, the Peacocks turned the lead around to 85-77 with 1:21 minutes left in the game.

Senior Kevin Krieger then tried to cut the Upper Iowa lead short by scoring two

more points for the Mavericks, however the Peacocks then responded with two points of their own, leading to the 89-81 Mavericks loss.

MSU shot 50% from the field and out-rebounded the Peacocks, 44-26. Freshman Ryland Hold and Kirksey both finished the night with a double-double.

On Saturday, the Mavericks were looking strong early on and didn’t allow the Warriors to score for the first five minutes of the match.

Minnesota State shot 48.4% from the field, compared to 28.6% from Winona State, while winning the rebound battle 27-14 in the first half, again entering halftime in the lead.

Krieger came through for the Mavericks, scoring 12 points in the first five minutes of the second half.

Unfortunately, MSU ended up falling short in the second half due to some strong 3-point shooting by the Warriors, leading to the 79-72 Maverick loss.

Mavericks baseball goes 2-2 in opening weekend HOCKEY JENNA PETERSON STAFF WRITER The Minnesota State Mavericks baseball team began their season this past weekend, splitting the four-game series against the Maryville University Saints.

The first game took place Friday afternoon, where the Mavericks fell to the Saints 2-1. Maryville started the game right away in the bottom of the first by scoring two runs. The Mavericks scored their only run in the top of the fourth inning, as junior Cam Kline started with a single, while junior Carter Elliott followed with a single off a bunt to put runners on first and second.

Sophomore Mikey Fredrickson hit a single to center field to bring Kline home.

Elliott led the team offensively going 3-for-3 at the plate, while senior Joey Werner, freshman Hunter Ranweiler, Kline and Fredrickson were able to get a hit as well.

Pitcher Kline allowed two runs on five hits and walked one batter, while also pitching eight strikeouts.

The Mavericks bounced back in the second game with a 9-6 win. In the first inning sophomore Nick Altermatt started the game with a double down the right field center line and senior Teddy Petersen and Werner used a sacrifice bunt and fly to bring Alterman home for a 1-0 Maverick lead.

The Saints responded with a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning, but this didn’t worry the Mavericks, as they took back the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Adam Schneider recorded his first collegiate hit that allowed him to get on base.

Senior Sebastian HolteMancera was walked, Ranweiler hit a single and Fredrickson was hit by a pitch to load the bases up. Schneider hit a double down the right field line to bring in three runs, giving the lead back to the Mavericks.

In the bottom of the fourth inning the Saints came back with two runs to shorten the Mavericks lead by one run.

Reacting to this, the Mavericks opened the top of the fifth inning with two more runs as Werner hit a triple to left center field and then scored on a wild pitch in his next at bat.

The Saints were able to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 6-5 lead, but this didn’t last long as the Mavericks tied the game at six in

the top of the eighth inning.

Junior Ben Livorsi hit a triple to center field to bring in senior Ty Denzer, who was running for Holte-Mancera.

The Mavericks continued to score in the top of the ninth inning with three more runs and taking the win 9-6.

Having one out, Werner walked and Kline hit a double to center field to bring in a run.

The Saints tied up the game and then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior Alex Hoff hit a double and scored when freshman Hayden Thornton hit a single to right center field.

Senior Jon Ludwig allowed three runs off five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in five innings, while junior Trevor Divinski surrendered the lead in the seventh inning by allowing three runs on four hits with three strikeouts in two innings.

On Saturday both teams took one win each, ending the weekend with a 2-2 record. The first game of the day didn’t start until the bottom of the fourth inning when Maryville scored the first run off a double.

In the last game of the weekend, Minnesota State was able to walk away with another win against Maryville. The Mavericks started with a run in the top of the third inning. Ranweiler was walked and later advanced to third base by a wild pitch and a tag up on a flyout; he was able to score after Werner was hit by a pitch and the Maryville pitcher was called for a balk.

The game remained quiet until the bottom of the ninth inning when the Saints tied

up the game with a run from Connolly when the bases were loaded, resulting in the game to go into extra innings.

The Mavericks gained the lead once again in the top of the 11th inning to earn the 3-1 win. Kline and Livorsi started with neighboring walks to have two people on base and Schneider was also walked with one out.

Ranweiler made a comeback with a single to left center that brought in two runs and led to the Maverick win - he also led the team offensively by going threefor-four at the plate.

Junior Jimmy Larson received a no decision after having no hits on him though his six innings of pitching and allowed only two walks and had nine strikeouts.

Junior Brendan Knoll debuted by pitching two innings and passing one run on three hits and a walk.

Altermatt was awarded the game win after pitching the last three innings and allowing three hits and striking out six batters.

Another player to receive a no decision was senior Kaleb Huxford, after going seven and a third innings, surrendering one run on three hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts.

The Mavericks will continue their season in Davenport, Florida from March 5-12 for their spring trip games. Here, they will play against Gannon University, Cedarville University, Wilmington University, St. Cloud State, Ashland University, University of Sioux Falls, Florida Tech and Wayne State University.

The other Mavericks to score in the game was junior Reggie Lutz, Michaelis (2) and junior Jake Jaremko.

The Minnesota State Mavericks will end their regular season against the Bemidji State Beavers on the road before beginning the WCHA Tournament.

The Maverick women’s hockey team took on the No. 3-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers on the road and were unable to pick up a win, losing 5-1 and 3-0.

Minnesota State is now 11-18-6 on the season and hold a conference record of 4-16-4. The Gophers skated out to a 4-0 lead entering the third period, but freshman Kelsey King was the lone Maverick to score over the weekend. Assisting her on the play was seniors Emily Antony and McKenzie Sederberg.

The Gophers responded and scored the fifth and final goal of the game about two minutes later and concluded the scoring for the game.

The second game was a little slower paced in the offensive department. The Gophers scored one goal a period for a total of three.

The Mavericks were unable to find the back of the net but were able to get up 24 shots up by the end of regulation.

The team will try to bounce back in the WCHA Quarterfinals on the road against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Softball goes 3-2 over weekend JENNA PETERSON STAFF WRITER The Minnesota State Mavericks softball team continued their season in another five-game weekend, where they won three games and lost two in the Emporia State Softball Classic.

To start the weekend, the Mavericks played their first game against the Washburn University Ichabods on Friday afternoon. Maverick junior Mackenzie Ward opened with pitching three innings and striking out five batters and allowing only one hit.

Freshman Katie Bracken replaced Ward and helped the team win by pitching four innings and allowing only one run and three hits and striking out three batters.

The Mavericks didn’t begin to score until the bottom of the second inning when junior Torey Richards stole from first base to third right before scoring at home off a single form junior Emma Schifferle.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Mavericks scored five more runs with a sequence of hits including a double from Schifferle that allowed two runs for her third RBI of the game.

Despite the Ichabods attempting to catch up to the Mavericks with one run in the top of the fourth, the Mavericks came back with a solo homerun to center from freshman Madi Newman to let the Mavericks win 7-1.

Schifferle ended the game 2-3 at the plate with three RBI and a double and sophomore Hannah McCarville going 3-3 from the plate with an RBI. Richards went 1-2 from the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases.

Following this game, the Mavericks played against the Missouri Western State Griffons and once again took the win.

Ward pitched the whole game for the Mavericks and let by only two runs on four hits while also striking out eight batters.

Minnesota State’s defense was unstoppable as Ward cut down the Missouri Western State’s batting rotation even though they passed up on a few scoring opportunities themselves. The Mavericks started the game in the fifth inning when freshman Sydney Nielsen hit a double that brought sophomore Kayla Moky home from third.

In the sixth inning the Mavericks scored three more runs due to the Griffons missing throws and catches, bringing their lead to 4-0. During their

last at bats, the Griffons managed to score two runs in the top of the eighth inning, but this didn’t bring the Mavericks down. Ward earned her eighth strikeout of the game, which helped the Mavericks win 4-2.

Nielsen and Richards both went 2-3 from the plate while sophomore Hannah Hastings went 1-3 with a triple and a run scored.

Moky ended the game with a stolen base for Minnesota State.

On Saturday, the Mavericks had only one game against the Missouri Southern State Lions, and here they fell short and lost 5-4.

Bracken started things off by pitching one inning, while passing up four runs on eight hits, but Ward picked things up and pitched the last six innings and allowed one run.

The Lions didn’t hesitate by bringing in eight hits in the first inning and scoring on four of those hits. In the bottom of the second inning the Mavericks slowly began to come back when McCarville hit a single through the right side of the field, bringing in Schifferle and Newman. Succeeding this play, Nielsen hit a hard grounder to second base, bringing junior Courtney Potter home.

After going two innings without scoring, Potter tied the game up at 4 with a home run to left field. The winning run from the Lions came in the top of the seventh inning after a single to left field brought in a runner from second base, winning the game 5-4.

On Sunday, the Mavericks played their last two games of the classic with the first one of the day being against the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats.

Ward started things steady for the Mavericks with pitching four innings and not allowing any runs on two hits with six strikeouts. The Maverick were able to score in the first inning with a solo home run from leadoff hitter senior Carly Esselman, this being her second home run of the early season, while bringing in another run on an error to lead the Mavericks in a 2-0 lead.

The Bearcats thought they would bring in some runs in the top of the fourth inning with bases loaded and one out, but Ward spared this by striking out one batter and managing to get another runner out at second off a groundball.

The Mavericks continued their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Esselman hit a single up the

center, allowing Potter to run home in advance of junior Hailey Forshee hitting a double to center field, which brought home both Esselman and Moky.

In the sixth inning Newman drove home a combination of insurance runs with a double to center field. Following this, Schifferle hit a single to right field, which brought Potter home and extended the Mavericks lead 8-0, resulting in a run rule in the sixth inning.

Esselman closed the game 2-3 from the plate with three runs scored and two RBI while Newman as well went 2-3 with two runs and two RBI. Richards went 2-3 from the plate with a run scored, and at the same time Schifferle went 2-4 with the walk off RBI. In the last game, the Mavericks fell short to the Emporia State University Hornets with a score of 4-3.

Ward pitched seven and a third innings this game, passing four runs, two of them earned on four hits.

The Hornets were the first to score in the bottom of the third inning off of a two-run home run. In response to this, the Mavericks scored one run in the top of the fourth inning when Richards hit a single into right field to bring Schifferle home.

The Mavericks tied the game up in the top of the fifth inning when Forshee hit a single to left, bringing Moky home. Neither teams scored in the remaining innings, leading to extra innings under international rules which places a runner at second to start the additional inning.

In the top of the eighth inning, McCarville hit a single down the third base line, which brought Forshee home, giving the Mavericks a 3-3 lead. The Hornets came back from this in the bottom of the inning with a two-run walk home run to win the game 4-3.

Richards concluded the game 3-4 at the plate with an RBI while Forshee finished 2-4 from the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

The Mavericks won’t be on the field again until the NTC Spring games hosted in Clermont, Florida from March 7-12. There, Minnesota State will play against Indianapolis University, Northwood University, Edinboro University, Ferris State, Wayne State University, Concordia College New York, Lock Haven University, University of Pitt Johnstown, Hillsdale College, and Bloomfield College.

The Mavericks scored first on Friday, however, they were unable to shake the Peacocks lead until the second quarter, when sophomores Kristi Fett and Maddy Olson scored for MSU. After that, the Mavericks were able to hold a steady lead, going into halftime, leaving the Peacocks trailing 41-27.

MSU extended their lead to 25 points, dominating the second half of the game. Junior Tayla Stuttley finished the game with 16 points while junior Rachel Shumski added 11 and senior Taylor Drost added nine.

As a team, the Mavericks won the turnover battle 31-7.

On Saturday, MSU shot 50% from the floor, while

limiting the Warriors to 31.1% and forced Winona State into 14 turnovers during the game for the 86-53 Mavericks Victory.

The Mavericks defense did not allow Winona any chance in cutting into their lead, smoothly tallying up the points throughout the game.

Drost led all players with 24 points, with seven rebounds and senior Kirstin Klitzke finished with 11 points.

Both teams will move on to play the first round of the NSIC Tournament this Wednesday at the Taylor Center. Tip-off for the women’s game against University of Minnesota Crookston is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game against Bemidji State University at 7:30 p.m.
