Hockey secures sole possession of MacNaughton Cup The team defeated Alaska Fairbanks Friday for their fourth cup in five years

BRADY OLSON STAFF WRITER Despite a close loss on Saturday night, the Mavericks won the ultimate prize of the weekend when a 6-1 victory on Friday over Alaska Fairbanks clinched them the WCHA conference championship. Going into Friday’s game, all Minnesota State needed to clinch was a tie or better. The Mavericks were not looking to just tie however, and came out firing as junior defenseman Ian Scheid scored the only goal of the first period, giving the Mavs the early advantage. The Maverick men’s hockey team clinched the cup Friday, Feb. 22 and now gets set for their final games of the regular season. over the game in the second period, scoring on three consecutive power plays within the first five minutes of

the second period. Fairbanks would receive three power plays of their own within the period.

After an additional goal from junior forward Josh French, MSU would close the period with a 5-0 advantage.

UAF would answer with a goal of their own, but sophomore defenseman Connor Mackey would respond with one of his own, and the Mavericks would finish Friday as WCHA champions. It was MSU’s second straight conference title, and guarantees the Mavericks will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming WCHA tournament. Saturday’s game was mainly uneventful for both sides, except for the lone UAF goal that would come near the end of the second period. Outside of that, it was a struggle all day for the Mavericks. Men’s track & field wins NSIC Indoor Championship

BOBBI PATRICK STAFF WRITER The men’s track and field team won their 8th consecutive NSIC Indoor Championship over the weekend, scoring points in every track and field event at Myers Field House. Teams traveled to Mankato to compete both Friday and Saturday. Most events had prelims on Friday and finals on Saturday. Finishing up the heptathlon on Saturday, senior Jack Curtis won the event with 5201 points while senior Ryan Kruse finished in third with 5053 points. With his new personal best from this

weekend, he is currently ranked seventh in the nation. In the 60-meter dash, five Mavericks scored. Freshman sprinter Cornelius Bright finished second (6.88), with seniors Vance Barnes finishing fourth (6.93), Artavius Nixon finishing fifth (6.99), and Jaquez Wilson finishing seventh (7.03). In the 60-meter hurdles, senior Sydne Davis (8.00) finished second. Davis is currently ranked eighth nationally, while his teammate senior Logan Bristol had a personal record and finished fourth with a 8.09. In the 200-meter dash, junior Paul Selman finished second with a 21.87, and senior Reid Diamond finished third with a 21.89. In the 400-meter dash, the mavericks sweeped the event with senior sprinter John Schuster winning the event (47.86), sophomore Josh Phelps finishing second
