University prepares for Women History Month Women’s Center to host events celebrating women all of March HELLEN AKINYI STAFF WRITER Women’s History Month begun as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California in 1975 and by 1978 the state of California made it official. The month’s aim is to be able to celebrate women and uplift them, bringing exposure into the phenomenal women who got silenced and written out of history simply because of who they were as people. Elizabeth Steinborn-Gourley, who has been the director of women’s center in MNSU since 2018 is helping organize a few events to mark Women’s History Month like Crowned and Qualified, Leadership to the polls and the Mae Simpson band. “I feel like every day is Women’s History Month”, Steinborn-Gourley said, “yes we do get the opportunity to brag and talk about our accomplishments as women and it is always good some-

times to be able to toot our own horns,” she added. Steinborn-Gourley talked about working in the Women’s Center, how it was actually her dream and she is who she right now-- all thanks to her mom for raising her to be a strong woman. Feminism is also often
rubbed off the wrong way. People have different definitions and often won’t bother to actually learn about feminism. A few even look at feminist as “angry women” when all feminists want is equality. The three events planned are all diverse and focused on different aspects. The
Crowned and Qualified event will be March 18, with the help of a few black-women led RSO’s like Black Motivated Women, and the event is aimed to celebrate black resilient women and their crowns. Their natural curls and afro’s will be the highlight of
the night and it will also bring to focus black women in history who did great things but were left behind and never got credit. The women of color in the faculty will also join to show the strong women in leadership at MNSU. They are currently in the process of taking pictures of black women on campus in the Women Center to display in the gallery during the event. The Leadership to the Polls event is about women in politics and in power. It will be on March 24. The event will be urging women to participate in politics and freely voice out their opinions without any second thoughts. The Women’s Center, the Kearney Center and the Commissions of Status of Women, (a group for women faculty and staff of MNSU), are the key organizers for the event.

coming election. Additionally, during our meetings we educate members about how to participate in these important political events.” For those who have not registered to vote should, and those who do not know their polling location should visit https://pollfinder.sos. state.mn.us/.
