Asian American night celebrates Asian culture and students Asian American Affairs hosts electrifying event, entertaining and educating

MARIA LY STAFF WRITER Minnesota State University, Mankato held Asian American night to celebrate and commemorate Asian American history with a diverse set of speakers and performances.

MC’ed by Daneng Hang and Bla Yang who introduced the performances, with the first performance from Cher Vang who sang a Mandarin/ Hmong rendition of “Yellow/ Meteors”.

as he thanked the student organizations, workers, and team who helped make the event possible. He also gave a speech about American popular culture, “yellow face”, and white washing in the media.

Dr. Henry Morris, Dean of Institutional Diversity followed suit as he asked the crowd for a moment of silence, “I’d like us to take a 10 second moment of silence for the 50 people killed in New Zealand just because of immigrant status. It’s just a shame that we have to keep having people killed because other people are afraid of people who look different, so I just want you to stand up and take a moment of silence for the people in New Zealand and all over the world who suffer because of the color of their skin.”

Admission tickets were used in a raffle as the MC’s gave out prizes to the winner.

The audience was served bahn mi sandwiches and boba tea as they enjoyed the live entertainment.

The next performance to hit the stage was a performance by the Kinsmen, who gave a stellar dance performance to popular Asian music.

Mouachoua Lor, who’s been singing since he was young, sang a cover of “Four Years Ago” by FBI. Following his performance, another student dance group, the Rouge Dolls performed a k-pop dance routine.

The event wasn’t only entertaining, but also educational, as they welcomed the Hmong Museum to showcase two of their short films about Hmong veterans and their experiences in the Vietnam War as well as a panel where guests were given the opportunity to ask questions.

Veterans Ly Vang, Thong Vang, and Neng Xiang gave insight on their experiences.

Ly Vang, in particular, spoke about her experiences as a nurse in the war and her time in America as she started her organization for Hmong women. Neng Xiang talked about his time as a 2nd Bureau officer for region two and his recruitment.

Next to grace the stage was the Vietnamese Buddhist Association of Minnesota who performed the lion dance, as they had four full sized lions who danced around the stage and engaged with the audience as they pranced around the CSU ballroom.

Continued from page 1 JOSHUA SCHUETZ STAFF WRITER The recent terror attack at a pair of mosques in New Zealand left 50 people dead and horrified the world. The killer, an avowed white nationalist, released a manifesto and livestreamed the atrocity.

That terrorists of all stripes have come to use the internet to disseminate their ideas and actions is no surprise.

The goal of terrorism, after all, is to induce terror.

But it is more than that. The new terrorism is not based on the top-down structures, like those common in the late 20th and 21st century.

Instead, it is a kind of DIY extremism.

This type of violence is characterized by individuals or small groups taking an ideology, or crafting one, and committing horrific violence in its name, using social media to maximize their impact.

It’s difficult to stop these types of attacks. They may be dreamed up by a single person or a few people, and they don’t leave the kind of paper trail that their more organized counterparts do.

White nationalist violence is not uncommon; it has occurred in the U.S. with some frequency in the past few years. Now it is spreading to other countries via the internet. ‘ How do we stop this?

Some have suggested greater regulation of social media.

Websites such as YouTube and Facebook need to realize that radicalization is a problem, and alter their algorithms to prevent people from falling into echo chambers that foment extremism.

But I argue that this is insufficient. What is needed is a de-escalation of political rhetoric. The shooter echoed sentiments that have been expressed (and continue to be expressed) by politicians throughout the world. Those politicians should bear electoral responsibility for the violence that their rhetoric has led to.

Ending the event was keynote speaker, Dr. Lu (Wendy) Yan, an Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies as she talked about diversity, immigration, Asian American history, and the hardships faced by immigrants.

After the event was the after party as they welcomed live performances from local Minnesotan rappers and singers. DJ Travis Chen handled the music as he helped out rap group Rhyme Recordz who rapped in the Hmong language.

Mouachoua Lor sang more songs as the audience did the line dance.

Other performances included Panhia Vang and Mai Yia Vue, as they slowed down the songs as couples, friends, and groups slow danced with one another.

Tou Saik continued to rap

as he pumped the stage with his smooth lyrics and sick bars. Lil Crazed ended the party as he sang popular songs from his albums.

Bla Yang, one of the MC’s of the night, thinks multicultural events are a great way for students to learn about other cultures.

Yang said, “I just think it’s great to give a multicultural view of a lot of different cultures that we have here, and it’s really nice to experience that with everyone and not just a particular group like for example Asians. I was really glad to see everyone attend from Caucasians to different kinds of Asians to African Americans. I just think it’s really important to go to these events because you don’t know what you’re going to experience and you don’t know what kind of event it’s going to be.”

The bill passed 94-34 after around four hours of debate that split mostly along party lines. It would support a wide range of prevention, education, intervention, treatment and recovery strategies. lMinnesota motorists would be required to use hands-free devices when talking on the phone while driving under a bill that passed the state House on Monday night, after sponsors said the measure will cut down on distracted driving and save lives.

U.S. & China event to take place in Ostrander

JOSHUA SCHUETZ STAFF WRITER Ever since the end of the Cold War, the United States has remained the only nation to be considered superpower in the world. Some thought that this state of affairs would never change.

It already has. China is one of the world’s most powerful countries and is rapidly approaching superpower status, if it has not achieved that already.

On Saturday, March 23, the public will get the opportunity to learn more about the

strained relationship between the United States and the People’s Republic of China.

The event will take place at the Ostrander Auditorium in the Centennial Student Union, at 1 p.m.

Presenting at the event will be Tom Hanson, the Chairman of the Minnesota Committee on Foreign Relations.

Mr. Hanson served in the United States Foreign Service for 25 years. In addition to serving as Chairman of the MCFR, Mr. Hanson is also the co-Chair of the China Asia Business Association, and serves as the Diplomat in Residence at the Alworth Institute for International Affairs.

Mr. Hanson has spoken on events related to foreign policy, particularly with respect to the United States

The 2020 Democratic Primary will shape democratic party

MICHAEL MCSHANE STAFF WRITER With the inclusion of Beto O’Rourke in the 2020 Democratic Party Primary, that means there are currently 13 confirmed candidates.

The 2020 Democratic Primary is drawing similarities to the 2016 Republican Primary which had over 15 candidates for president at one point.

While many would believe more is good, it is sorely not the case in this scenario for the Democratic Party which is in dire need of being united now more than ever.

Not only is the Democratic Party veering closer and closer to the left in terms of policy, whether that is a good or bad thing depends on who you ask, but it also is facing the possibility of having a fullon civil war.

With the 2018 election ancient history now, the Democratic party has to now come to terms with the aftermath of the Blue Wave that has swept the party into uncharted waters. The 2020 Democratic party primaries are looking to be one of the most left-wing and liberal in

political history and many Democrats who lean more center are fearing it will alienate the more moderate members of the party and independents who they direly need in the election.

With how far to the right Donald Trump went during his time in the 2016 primaries, I won’t be surprised if some of the Democrats in this upcoming primary try to use the same kind of playbook.

With Democrats such as Elizabeth Warren already going at it head first with her wish to bring down big tech companies such as Facebook and Apple to Bernie Sanders being..Bernie Sanders, it’s looking like the 2020 primary is going to be about who can out-liberal one another.

But what about the more center-ish candidates?

OLUWATOMIKE BALI STAFF WRITER At some point in our life, we have procrastinated, intentionally or unintentionally.

Procrastination is the act of putting off or delaying something that needs to be done. As a college student it is almost impossible not to procrastinate on getting work done. Students typically juggle a lot of stuffs ranging from school work, to other activities.

However, procrastination doesn’t just prevent you from getting work done, it also affects our physical health and mental work balance.

Procrastination causes stress and anxiety which can be detrimental to one’s health.

The more time one puts off work that needs to be done, the lesser time left to finish up the work. In order to meet up with deadlines, we tend to rush things up, putting our body under pressure and anxiety.

Procrastination also affects grades and performance in school; when we procrastinate continuously we tend to be

overworked, not getting adequate rest and turning in rushed assignments. Overall this affects ones productivity

future even after college.

Procrastination can ruin ones career and can prevent you from reaching your

If one procrastinates a lot it becomes a habit and can impose a lot of danger in

goals. When procrastination becomes a habit, it begins to affect ones daily life, you become relaxed and nonchalant with our professional work, one can’t attain set goals because you

pushed back on starting, one begins to miss target deadlines at our place of work. When this becomes a norm, you become frustrated, constantly stressed out and might even lose their job.

Procrastination can also make you unreliable, if you’re used to delaying things and people begin to address you with that, it can affect what people think of you and cause them to trust or rely on you. They would always have the mindset and see you as a procrastinator who can’t get job done on time. Overtime this affects ones reputation.

As a result, we should try to avoid procrastination. It might be inevitable at some point in our lives but we shouldn’t make it a norm.

MSU off to the WCHA Championship game

The team swept Lake Superior State over the weekend to move on to the final round

BRADY OLSON STAFF WRITER The Minnesota State men’s hockey team dominated the ice over the weekend, allowing just one goal over two games as the Mavericks swept the Lake Superior State Lakers, 2-0, in the WCHA semifinals.

The Friday game got kicked into gear early on, as LSSU’s Diego Cuglietta scored just 97 seconds into the contest.

However, Minnesota State would respond fiercely.

Junior forward Charlie Gerard notched his 11th goal of the season Friday’s 2-1 win over Lake Superior State would give the Mavericks the lead just a minute after Gerard’s equalizer.

The Lakers would have a chance to even it up when Maverick sophomore Riese Zmolek entered the penalty

box, but MSU refused to allow any shots at the goal.

In the second period, both teams appeared to be evenly matched throughout.

The Mavs had some especially close calls in

allowing a second goal, but held strong whenever the Lakers closed in. MSU would have two power plays in the period, but LSSU did an exceptional job in stifling the Maverick attack.

The third period started even more electric than the first.

Two minutes into the period, Gerard got the puck away on a breakaway. Tripped up behind, it appeared that Gerard got the puck across just before he crashed into LSSU goalie Nick Kossoff.

Nonetheless, the referees declared no goal. Gerard would be gifted a penalty shot, which would be successfully saved by Kossoff.

The Lakers would get three power plays after that, but the Mavs’ lockdown defense down the stretch would secure the victory.

Game two started off much differently than the first, as little action ensued for the first nine minutes of the game. However, that

Maverick basketball falls to Bearcats

The team’s season comes to end after losing their first game of the NCAA tournament

ANDREW NEURURER STAFF WRITER Minnesota State men’s basketball team came to an end Saturday night after losing to the No. 1 ranked Northwest Missouri State, 62-91.

Northwest Missouri State is the top team in Division II, sitting pretty with an undefeated record of 33-0.

The Bearcats were led by former MSU transfer, Joey Witthus, who had himself a game. Along with the win, Witthus put up 39 points and 7 rebounds. He also shot 12-of-21 from the field, 4-for8 from 3 and was a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity stripe.

Alongside Witthus, the Bearcats had just four other players that contributed to the point total. It’s not often a team is able to win a game

The Mavericks never held a lead at any point, nor did they ever tie the game in the loss Saturday night.

who put up 22 points on an efficient 7-for-15 from the field and 4-for-5 from 3. MSU didn’t get much scoring help beyond Kirksey, but freshman Quincy Anderson did have 14 points.

The Mavericks shot the ball 21-of-55 from the field, good for 38.2 percent. They didn’t shoot the ball well throughout the game, but

they did at least have greater success from beyond the arc – 10-for-23. Where the Mavericks had the advantage over the Bearcats was their bench contributions with 27 points.

Despite putting up 35 points in the first half and 27 in the second, the team’s efficiency between the two halves were night-and-day.

They were 44.4 percent from the field and 53.3 percent from 3-point range in the first half. Whereas they were just 32.1 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from downtown in the second.

Regardless, the team put themselves in a hole after falling to a 35-54 deficit at the half. The team will lose two seniors in Carlos Anderson and Karson Arrenholz. There are a lot of lowerclassman on the roster who will look to build off the 2018-19 year.

The 18-12 Mavericks will look to next season to correct things after having a down season compared to the 2017-18 year. The Mavericks squeaked by into the tournament, despite being upset by the 10-17 Bemidji State Beavers.

The Mavericks started the year off stronger than they ended. Between Dec. 1 and Jan. 11, the team was 10-2, before slipping as the regular season came winding down.

Regardless of the events this season, Minnesota State will look to rebound during their 2019-20 season.

Maverick baseball takes one game versus Cloud The team took one game out of three over the Huskies in Omaha, Nebraska

JENNA PETERSON STAFF WRITER The Mavericks started their conference season this past weekend with losses against St. Cloud State in two of the team’s three games against the team on Saturday and Monday.

After a weekend where the Maverick’s home was moved to Omaha, Nebraska, the team looked as if a change of scenery had put a wrinkle in the team’s chances of winning this weekend.

The start of the series was not ideal for the Mavericks, as the Huskies scored five of their seven runs in the first inning, leaving the Mavericks with work to do in order to catch up.

Even came in for relief of sophomore pitcher Jimmy Larson after the first team, and actually held the Huskies to their first inning score, until the fourth inning where they scored one more run off of Even.

The only run the Mavericks were able to score came in the sixth inning, which was scored by junior second baseman Teddy Petersen off the bat of designated hitter Ty Buck.

The seventh inning is where the Huskies got their last run, resulting the game to end 7-1 with a Husky win.

Things were looking better for the Mavericks on Monday morning. The two teams played each other at 10 a.m. once again at Millard North High School.

Shortly after the morning game ended, the Mavericks played the second game of a doubleheader.

The Huskies started the game off by scoring one run in the first inning while MSU scores two runs in the second inning with Altermatt and Hart.

St. Cloud scored one run in both the fourth and fifth inning while the Mavericks were held to no runs.

The Huskies scored three runs in the seventh inning and two in the ninth inning, resulting in a win for St. Cloud, 8-2.

Minnesota State, Mankato is 1-2 to start conference play this season as they start to get into the heart of the season. Upcoming games for the Mavericks are against Southwest Minnesota State on Wednesday, March 20. These games will be held at Bowyer Field at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

shifted dramatically when LSSU’s Max Humitz got called for a major penalty on high-sticking. That opened the door for the Mavericks, as freshman forward Julian Napravnik and sophomore forward Reggie Lutz would score goals in quick succession on the power play. The Lakers would get two power plays of their own in the period, but they failed at getting close to the goal as the Mavs took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

The second period saw zero scoring, but totaled a combined six penalties between the two teams.

calls with a score, but were repelled in every attack.

With five minutes to go, a collision between Lutz and LSSU’s Brayden Gelsinger sent both to the penalty box, and the crowd got to see some 4-on-4 action. A couple of minutes later, MSU junior Ian Scheid and Humitz were both sent to the box after Humitz charged into MSU goalie Dryden McKay after a McKay save.

For the first 18 minutes, the third period was mostly an up-and-down affair as the Mavericks began to milk the clock and the Lakers entered desperation mode.

Both teams would take

ten shots in the period, but the Mavericks mainly attacked near the end of the period. The Lakers looked to mount one last charge, but a crucial penalty with 2:03 left all but ended the fight.

The goalie was pulled with about 30 seconds left, but the effort proved futile as the Mavericks won 2-0.

With the sweep the Mavericks are now 20-1-0 at the Verizon Center this season. Their final home game will take place Saturday, March 23 when they play Bowling Green for the WCHA Championship.

Wet fills Varsity Theater with cool vibes MADDIE DIEMERT NEWS EDITOR American indie pop band Wet preformed a captivating show on Friday, March 15 at Varsity Theater in Minneapolis.

The Brooklyn-based band performed an hour-long, 15-song concert for a crowd that filled up the entire venue and packed themselves in tightly around the stage for a glimpse of lead singer, Kelly Zutrau. Zutrau and her band also shared the stage with California’s Hana Vu and Florida’s Kilo Kish.

Hana Vu performed a short, 25-minute set entirely by herself. The 18-year-old accompanied her unique, textured voice with an electric guitar and heavy bass

from a synth board. The singer emitted jazzy tunes and a sultry sound that instantly captivated the audience.

Vu, who has been releasing

music dating back to 2014, performed several songs from “Crying in the Subway” to “Queen of High School.”

Before she ended her set,

she thanked the audience from coming out and finished off with “Team.”

Kilo Kish, formally known as Lakisha Kimberly Robin-

son, played an hour-long set, considering the indie artist just released her first studio album in 2016, titled “Reflections in the Real.”

The 28-year-old entered the stage in almost complete darkness, save for a few dim lights flashing behind her. Kish gave off an ethereal presence as she walked to the front of the stage, her long legs donned in green-blue tights and her dress sparkling from the ever-changing color of the lights.

Like Vu, Kish’s set was backed heavily by bass and synth beats, sending vibrations throughout the venue.

Kish performed almost her whole set before addressing the crowd and introducing herself. She finished with a wave to the crowd and thanked concertgoers and

“Good Thunder Reading Series” bring Layli Long Soilder to campus Soilder hosts workshops and reading for other aspiring poets

JENNA PETERSON STAFF WRITER Minnesota State University, Mankato, hosted a Good Thunder Reading event for the students and the public to attend Thursday, March 14. Poet Layli Long Soldier was the special guest for the evening and shared poems that she had written within the past four days of her stay in Mankato.

Soldier hosted workshops for aspiring poets to come and create work in a variety of forms. One style of poems that Soldier introduced to the students is called Dada.

Here, students wrote a paragraph length of whatever topic they wanted to

talk about, and afterwards they took certain words and phrases to make a poem.

Doing this style of poetry can be difficult and take a lot of work, but the students were able to do it.

The first poem Soldier shared with the audience was titled “Split”. This poem was about a breakup between two lovers and is a Dada style poem. One quote that really stuck out to the audience was, “Your arms cold on mine, my mind, a title waves of beliefs.” This quote is powerful in the way of telling how much trust the one person had in the other, and now all there is left is confusion.

Soldier wrote a poem that some might see as controversial but is a topic that needs to be addressed. In December of 2009, former President of the United States, Barack Obama signed the Native American Apology Resolu-

icans for the violence and neglect they have received

through the centuries. One of the powerful lines Soldier wrote in response to this was, “I must work, I must eat, I must art, I must mother, I must friend, I must listen, I must observe, constantly, I must live.” Soldier wrote another poem within the same topic, and it was in response to some non-Native American’s ignorance of the problems these people face today. Some lines from this poem include, “Well at least there was an apology. That’s all I can say.

“I sit there, painful in the mist of silence.”

The audience was moved

by Soldier’s words and were inspired from her stories that she shared Thursday evening. Everyone thought about their own stories and how they can share them through poetry, no matter how much writing experience they have.

MNSU Theatre presents “Mothers and Sons” in the Studio MANKATO – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Department of Theatre & Dance will open “Mothers and Sons” by Terrence McNally on March 27 in the Andreas Theatre at the Early Center for the Performing Arts.

“Mothers and Sons” tells the story of a woman who pays an unexpected visit to the New York apartment of her late son’s partner, who is now married to another man and has a young son. Challenged to face how society has changed around her, generations collide as she revisits the past and begins to see the life her son might have led.

MFA Directing candidate David T. Loudermilk is directing “Mothers and Sons”, and he explains that this show is all about relationships, “For me, this play is just as much about the script

as it is the audience that surrounds us while we experience it. I hope that this show does not end when the curtain falls, but the dialogue continues, because it is necessary.”

“Mothers and Sons” runs March 27-30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Andreas Theatre at the Earley Center for Performing Arts, Minnesota State University, Mankato. Tickets are $10 regular, $9 for seniors ages 65 and older, children under 16 and groups of 15 or more; and $8 for MSU students.

A heavy silence filled the crowd before Wet’s set and the whole venue was pitched into darkness. Fog settled over the audience’s heads and a projection started to play on a white curtain facing the crowd. The images flickered, unintelligible as the band began to set up their equipment and soundcheck.

Zutrau slowly walked on stage, barefoot in a white, sequined jumpsuit. She took her place in the middle of the stage as the lights flickered and shined down on her.

Zutrau had a somber look on

her face as she began with “11 Hours,” which is featured on Wet’s latest album, “Don’t You”.

Zutrau’s voice floated through the atmosphere and lingered, her lilting hitting all the right spots. She continued with a song from her self-titled debut album, “Deadwater.” The crowd swayed around Zutrau’s figure, singing out the words to every song, their voices echoing hers.

As the band played songs from both albums, there was a sort of connection they bonded with the audience.

Zutrau stared out into the eyes of the fans before her, begging them to understand.

Their applause was confirmation enough that they were indeed with her.

Fans were also treated to two autoharp acoustic version of the songs “Still Run” and “All the Ways” and were succeeded by “Softens” and “You’re the Best,” which closed the show. Before exiting the stage, Kelly invited fans to the merch table near the entrance of the venue, promising them pictures, autographs, and kind words.
