BRADY OLSON STAFF WRITER The Mavericks won their fourth WCHA championship on Saturday against the Bowling Green Falcons, 3-2, in dramatic fashion in front of 5,327 fans in attendance at the Verizon Center after overcoming a 2-0 deficit late in the game.

The first period proved to be a frustrating one for Maverick fans, as the home team struggled with

controlling the puck on passes. As a result, Bowling Green controlled the puck for most of the period, and culminated in a Falcon goal with five minutes to play in the period. MSu got a power play near the end of the period, but was stifled by the Falcon defense.

The second period was just as infuriating for the Mavericks, but the same problems would arise for the Falcons. Each team would get only six shots on goal in the period, but again the Falcons were controlling the game. The Mavs got two power plays in the period, but only got one shot off on each one. MSU was still in the game, however, as the score

held at 1-0 going into the intermission.

Just over a minute into the period, a contentious game misconduct penalty was called on junior Edwin Hookenson, which led to a major penalty along with Hookenson’s ejection.

Eight seconds into the period, Bowling Green extended their lead to 2-0.

The Mavericks held the line after the goal, and made it through the penalty intact.

However, they continued to fail at getting close to the goal, and restlessness began to converge on the MSU fans.

With just over three minutes to play, the decision was made to pull freshman goalie Dryden McKay. As

some fans began to leave the arena, MSU began to work the puck in towards the Falcons’ goal. Their patience in finding a shot paid off with 1:44 to play, when sophomore Jake Jaremko snuck one into the back of the net.

Still down one, McKay again left the ice when MSU won the faceoff for the puck.

With 56 seconds to play, sophomore Connor Mackey got the puck out near the blue line and somehow got the puck to sneak into the net. With the score evened up, the Verizon Center roared to its feet as the game would be sent into overtime.

With new life, MSU stumbled out of the gate in overtime as the Falcons got

the first shot at the goal.

MSU successfully repelled the attack, and quickly made their way down the ice. Just 1:37 into the extra period, senior Nick Rivera got the puck at point-blank range and put in the game-winner as the Mavericks won 3-2.

Mavericks head coach Mike Hastings had this to say after the game on the difficulties early on in the game and how the team finally found the momentum to get us back in the game, “For the majority of the game, (Bowling Green) had stifled us, no space, no room, no time, and we didn’t

Destination: Africa; showcasing diversity and African culture

OLUWATOMIKE BALI STAFF WRITER MNSU is home to many International students from different countries and cultural background. Over the weekend, the African student Association (ASA) held their annual event, African Night, to celebrate Africa as a continent and showcase its diversity and culture.

The event which was tagged “Destination: Africa” showcased and celebrated the diversity of the African culture. The theme of the event explains the concept which was presented as an airplane landing in airports of different African countries that was represented at the show and a brief slide show into what each country looked like and their famous historical sights.

The event which took place at the CSU started off with a dinner at 4 p.m., the menu

consisted of African foods, a popular west African delicacy called “Jollof rice”, plantains, and popular Ethiopian dish called “injera”.

The main show started at 7 p.m. and kicked off with a fashion show showcasing different styles with beautiful African prints. Some of the African wears was -designed by a MNSU student with a

brand name “Iyato by Nimo”.

Immediately after the fashion show, a minute silence was observed for those who lost their lives in the Ethiopian airline crash, afterwards the Ethiopian and Eritrea dance crew came on stage performing their traditional dance moves.

Progressing in the program the host moved

the audience into the “Nigerian aerospace”, as they showcased indigenous dance performance to some Nigerian hip-hop. Still within the west African culture, Liberians performed next, dancing to Liberian hip-hop music.

As the night progressed, there was a couple more dance performances from

different countries such as Ghana, and Ivory coast, dancing to their hip hop music, while South Sudan and Gambia danced to their traditional music and showed off indigenous dance step pertaining to their culture.

The dance performances showcased the rich and energetic cultures of Africa.

There was also a music performance by Udu and Michael Krizz, the music performances celebrated beautiful African girls, there was a slide show going on during their performances, pictures of different African girls.

The highlight of the event has to be a poetry rendition which seemed like a battle between Africans and the white men, the poem talked about important topics like “slavery, white superiority, white people stealing the African culture and seeming like a white savior” and so on. The poem resonated well among Africans, as these were things that happened in

Panel discusses lack of women in STEM related fields

MICHAEL MCSHANE STAFF WRITER The Society of Women Engineers held a panel Thursday to discuss ongoing issues pertaining to the low amount of woman in STEM fields in the nation.

On the panel were Dr. Fredreanna Hester, research scientist for the Progresso brand at General Mills, Dr. Stephen Druschel, a professor of civil engineering at MNSU, Dr. Emily Ziemke, a North American Corn Technician lead at DuPont Pioneer and Marianne Anderson, a graduate and research student at MNSU. All four came together to speak about the how they went into their own specific STEM field and the people that encouraged and helped them through their undergraduate and graduate life.

The three woman who participated in the panel however are in a small minority group in which woman made up only 28

percent of the science and engineering work force per a study conducted by the National Science Board.

The four panelists discuss the reasons behind this, much of the blame pointed at a lack of role models and stereotypes that hold girls

still the persistent stereotype concerning STEM fields where subjects such as math and science are more geared toward boys and English and the Arts are primarily for girls only.

A lack of role models is not the only road block that is keeping girls and women from STEM field. Even as the country is about to go into the 2020 decade, there is

education where boys and girls are finding their passions.

During this important and impressionable phase of life, many girls can be interested in such things as science and math, but not go further either because they are not encouraged to follow that passion or, as mentioned, a lack of role models.

A topic discussed by the panelists was the struggle women in STEM careers go through is the belief that one mistake can cost everything.

When you’re the only female on the team, there is a pressure to be perfect and

to not take risks that male colleagues can otherwise make without fear.

Hester spoke about her own personal experience dealing with this issue herself, “I typically hold myself to a higher standard, I don’t feel like I have that leeway,” Hester said. “It kind of has that pressure because you don’t have anyone else to look at.”

There is no study that shows boys are better in STEM-related subjects, in fact, a study published on Nature Communications

showed that girls performed equally and sometimes better in STEM subjects than boys.

While grades are not a factor, we can blame the outdated notion that boys are better in STEM-related subjects then girls as the reason girls are held back from continuing into the field.

The three female panelists at Thursday’s event are examples and role models that girls can look at and see that women can indeed succeed in STEM fields and not feel as though they can’t make it in those industries.

Students organize event to celebrate women empowerment

MARIA LY STAFF WRITER The Women’s Center teamed up with the International Student Association (ISA) to celebrate International Women’s Day this past Thursday in Ostrander Auditorium.

The event was hosted by interns from the Women’s Center, Alimatou Bah and Brooke Koehn, as well as the vice president of the ISA, Nimotallahi Quadri.

The event welcomed guest speaker, Labelle Nambangi, the author of “Women Who Soar” and speaker of women’s empowerment.

Nambangi told stories of her life, the powerful women that she looked up to growing up, her conversations with people about feminism, and

the importance of women’s empowerment.

Nambangi stated, “I’ve come across a lot of people, men especially, that have the misconception that women’s empowerment is about women wanting to have

control over men. Women’s empowerment isn’t about women wanting control over men, but rather women wanting to have control of their own lives. Feminism isn’t about women hating men or wanting to control the

world, it’s just women fighting against the oppressive practices, policies, and gender discrimination they experience on a regular.”

The event also showcased student performers. Avishek Pradhan, Samikshya

Bhattarai, and Sneha Bhusal performed an interpretive dance that represented the tough journey of domestic violence.

Tomi Adeola, another student performer, recited a spoken word poem about the life of a young girl and the unfortunate circumstance she faced of genital mutilation.

He stated, “It can be female genital mutilation, It can be misogyny, it can be rape, it can be any form of gender based discrimination. It could be my sister’s or yours. It could be my mother or yours.

It could be my daughter or yours. This is why everybody should be a feminist.”

The event ended with a student panel to gain the perspectives of women from all different kinds of backgrounds and perspectives.

On Saturday, Tom Hanson, the Diplomat-in-Residence at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, gave a presentation on the geopolitics of East Asia, the relationship between the United States and China, and the growing risk of confrontation between the two countries. The event was sponsored by the Mankato Area Lifelong Learners, a group dedicated to fostering education and continued intellectual development for adults later in life.

Mr. Hanson’s speech was remarkable in its breadth and scope, covering everything from medieval history to the political chaos of the last three years.

China has been rising slowly, but the rest of the world is beginning to pivot to it, especially as the United States, with its recent political turmoil, has begun to lose the confidence of other countries in the world, even our own allies. “We are seen

around the world today as an increasingly polarized and uncertain country,” Mr. Hanson said.

The country’s rapid advancement, particularly in technology and infrastructure, has outpaced the U.S. in recent years. “Xi Jinping, in 2014, announced the One Belt One Road Initiative, a new Silk Road,” Mr. Hanson said. “This is a massive infrastructure project, probably the largest in human history, that would link up Asia and Europe.”

Over 70 countries, including many U.S. allies, are already involved in the initiative.

This discrepancy also extends to the private sector.

Chinese tech companies have been investing in infrastructure and new technology, while their American counterparts have focused on stock buybacks and maximizing short-term profits. “There’s a sense that our heavily financialized system is not as adaptive, not as quick, as this highly centralized system,” Mr. Hanson said.

China has no shortage of problems, including pollution and massive amounts of debt. However, it has a fundamentally different political culture than the United States, and its leaders have a different way of

Should college athletes be paid?

OLAYINKA GBOLAHAN STAFF WRITER As most of us are watching and enjoying March Madness and the crazy reactions to the state of our brackets and predictions. It is also important to remember the real benefactors are not the student athletes playing sedulously.

The discussion about paying college studentathletes has been controversial and the debate has been heightened because of the March Madness period.

I personally think college student athletes should be paid based on the benefits they bring to the school. The argument that they are given scholarship based on their talents and that is a form of payment is so hypothetical because these student athletes are basically required to skip school for nationally televised games and away trips. They are also in less financially challenging and competitive majors because they have to juggle school work which is at least 12 credit hours in order to graduate in four years with their intensive “extra-curricular activity” which is also eating into their study time and may gradually

decimates their overall performance academically and this would also limit their opportunities if they do not plan to play professional sport.

Also, the student-athletes are dealing with the pressures laying on their performance both athletic and academically which puts them at a psychologically stability disadvantage. They are also pressured to follow restriction

If this is just an extracurricular activity then it is to be subject to more flexibility and should be less strenuous and time consuming. affecting this student socially because they are at least famous locally which may not necessary be a good thing because of the lack of respect to their privacy.

It is actually ironic that the athletic administrators, athletic directors and coaches that argue against paying student athletes are being paid on average $1.64 million, according to Browne Clayton on career trend and really would not prefer to be paid like professors and school instructors and other Academic Administrator who are being paid $70,246 on average according to Locsin Aurelio of chron.com. This is quite revealing where their

priorities lie and they can quit with the fake narrative of providing free education.

The school has also benefited tremendously from student athletes. Apart from the monetary benefits, school has also gain popularity and remained on the national map because of the relevance of their athletic programs.

This has also helped their branding in attracting paying college student no wonder every college orientation is always spear headed by a college mascot the reviling image of athletic program.

This is free advertisement, if you are not paying them as student athletes, at least pay them for admission models during media day and television broadcast The school also benefits financially from ticket sales, food and drink stand sales and gears and wears sales. They also benefit tremendously from television broadcast rights, shoes and uniform deals, sponsorship and advertisement deals.

These are just some reasons why I think student-athletes should be paid for a job well done. This may also bring to question how the NCAA would financially distribute stipends across colleges and adjust their budget which I recommend them employing a budget analyst that has student interest in mind and would pay student-athletes based on their performance which reflects their talent and the hard work.

Adidas releasing recycled shoes Students gear up for data competition ALYSSA BUNDE STAFF WRITER In 2017 Forbes stated, “Humans buy a million plastic bottles per minute,” and that, “91 percent of all plastic is not recycled.” Adidas, the famous shoe company is doing something about this.

In 2015 adidas paired up with environmental group, Parley for Oceans. The group according to an Adidas press release is a, “global network of creators, thinkers and leaders from brands, governments and environmental groups who come together to raise awareness for the beauty and fragility of the oceans and collaborate on projects that can end their destruction. “ In the same Adidas press release they explain that the Adidas Parley products use plastic that is, “collected by organizations on shorelines and coastal areas such as the Maldives.”

In 2017 Adidas produced one million pairs of shoes and in 2018, Adidas manufactured more than five million pairs of shoes containing recycled plastic waste, according to an

Adidas press release.

In January, Adidas Tennis joined the recycled shoe game and released the first ever Parley tennis collection.

MICHAEL MCSHANE STAFF WRITER Minnesota State University will be hosting the eighth annual Midwest Undergraduate Data Analytics Competition (MUDAC) on March 30.

The two-day competition is designed to test undergraduate students who are looking to enter the data science and analysis business.

There will be 60 teams overall in the competition composed of students from Midwest universities. This will be the first year the competition will be hosted by MNSU. The participating groups will have 24 hours to compete in a hackathon in which groups must solve a complex challenge by using data analysis techniques.

Afterwards, teams will be judged by representatives from top data companies.

The prizes for the competition will include gift cards and possibly cash prize as well.

Potential cash and gift cards will not be the only thing participating students will be getting out of this event. Students taking part in the event will also be introduced to networking opportunities with industry professionals as well as learn hands-on data analytic skills.

A job fair will take place on the second day of the competition where participants can meet with at least ten companies including Mayo Clinic, the Taylor Corporation and IBM. To promote the event, Anahita Bahrami, secretary to MNSU’s Data Resources for Eager and Analytical Minds (DREAM), spoke to The Reporter about what students can expect to get out of this competition.

“In this hackathon, students have the opportunity to basically see where their standing in terms of their skill set that is required to solve a problem, especially in the data science field and also they get a chance to develop their resume,” Bahrami said.

The two-day event is expecting close to 250 students to participate in the competition. When including guests there is an estimated 400 people that will be coming to this years MUDAC. Because of the large amount of participating students and guests, the event will not be available to individuals not actively involved in the competition.

The 2019 MUDAC is sponsored by the Water Resource Center.

Feminism is about bridging the gaps between oppression and privilege.”

Another panelist, Alena Joseph, stated, “When I think about feminism, I think about intersectionality. I don’t want to include just gender, but I also want to include race, I want to include ableism, gender identity expression, and that’s why feminism to me is not just making the playing field easier for men and women, but for everybody.”

The theme of the event was #BalanceForBetter to encourage the fight for equality and a balanced world. When asked what an ideal balanced world looks like to them, panelist Tashinga Mupambo stated, “Just recognizing that we’re all different, a balanced world isn’t a world where we all

become one culture or we believe in the same thing, but just realizing that balanced for me might be different than balanced for you, and it’s just about embracing every person’s dignity and their right to choose what they want for their lives.”

Another panelist, Claribel Cora, stated, “I think that balanced for better is to promote diversity and to accept our different identities to have a balanced world for everyone so they can feel accepted no matter their identity. My ideal balanced world is one that recognizes that diversity in all areas of society including mass media policies and schools in order to create respect for different genders.”

The International Women’s Day celebration was very educational as students got to learn a lot of different perspectives in many sectors of culture.

Brooke Koehn, an organizer of the event, stated,

“I think it’s really important to celebrate the differences between cultures. I’m from America and I don’t really know that much so to like broaden my knowledge of the different cultures and to celebrate that is very important” Alimatou Bah, another organizer of the event, stated, “I believe International Women’s Day is very important because women do not get celebrated as often, even though every day is women’s day for me, we don’t get as celebrated as often as we should and if we get a whole month to be celebrated, why isn’t MNSU doing it, so we thought we should do one.”

Bah was happy about the event, although they faced some complications in organizing their first event, she stated, “If we could educate one person that’s more than enough.”

Maverick baseball takes two games against Minot The team took two games out of three over the Beavers at Franklin Rogers Park

JENNA PETERSON STAFF WRITER This past weekend, the Minnesota Mavericks baseball team played Minot State on Friday and Saturday against Minot State and took two game out of three at Franklin Rogers Park, the home of the Mankato Moondogs.

The games were originally going to be played at Bowyer Field, but due to the field still being wet from the snow, the teams faced off at Franklin Rogers Park instead.

Game one on Friday resulted in a win for the Mavericks. In the first inning, the Mavericks started off with two runs by senior catcher Tom Imholte and junior designated hitter Ty Buck while the Beavers were held

The game was at a standstill for a good half of the game, until the fifth inning where the Mavericks scored two more runs by junior left fielder Ty

Denzer and senior center fielder Tyler Berg.

The seventh inning is the only time the Beavers scored, bringing in four runs in the inning, which tied up the

game at four apiece.

The Mavericks ended up winning game one after senior outfielder Jordan Hart hit a double to right field that brought in freshman infielder

Jack Friedges for the walk-off victory.

The second game on Friday was a bigger fight for the Mavericks. Starting the first inning strong, the Mavericks were able to bring in runs by Imholte and Buck.

The Beavers brought in their first run of the game in the third inning by senior Michael Borst, while the Mavericks didn’t bring in anything in the bottom of the inning.

The top of the fifth inning was started off with a home run by Beavers senior Michael Borst, but the Mavericks were quick to get three outs afterwards.

The Beavers once again had a scoring inning in the sixth.

Junior infielder Ryley Humrighouse hit a single to left field, bringing in freshman Jake Collins for the score.

Softball takes two over the weekend

The team bounced back from their loss Thursday with two wins of their own

AARON YOUNG STAFF WRITER This past weekend, the Maverick women’s softball bounced back from their lost against Central Missouri with two straight wins. They are now 15-7 on the year.

On Thursday, the Mavs faced the Pittsburg State Gorillas in a low scoring affair.

The Mavericks scored early off a single by senior Cori Kennedy, sending senior outfielder McKenzie Paap home.

Later on, in the fifth, sophomore Torey Richards would score on a groundout from sophomore outfielder Courtney Potter.

In the second game, the Hornets of Emporia State kicked off the game with a solo shot in the first.

Later in the game, junior Carly Esselman hit a double to drove in Paap to tie the game at one apiece. One out later, Esselman reached home off a fielding error by the Hornets to give the Mavericks

Track & field invites compete in Nebraska

The invitees took part in their first outdoor meet of the season at Wayne State

BOBBI PATRICK STAFF WRITER This past Friday and Saturday, some of the members of the Minnesota State track and field team traveled to Wayne, Nebraska to open their outdoor season.

In the throws, sophomore Bedale Naba placed third in the shot put with a throw of 14.86 (48-09).

Junior thrower Connor McCormick won the hammer throw with a provisional qualifying toss of 57.00 meters (187-00).

“Hammer is my main event overall, and it felt pretty good to hit the provisional mark but I know that I can go a lot further so I’d say it was a good way to start the year,”

said McCormick.

On the jumps side, sophomore Deveyon Brown took third in the high jump with a leap of 1.94 meters (6-04.25).

In the triple jump, senior Victor Ogeka and sophomore Cameron Ramnarine took first and second. Ogeka jumped 13.53 meters while Ramnarine jumped 12.99 meters.

On the women’s side, sophomore Teya Langston won the high jump with a jump of 1.62 meters.

Senior thrower Heather Buckler won fourth in the shot put with a toss of 13.70 meters and sophomore Kaylee Jensen won fifth place in the hammer throw with a toss of 49.35.

“It felt amazing to throw outside this weekend. Friday, we had really nice weather and it was a great way to kick off the outdoor season,” said Jensen. “I’m definitely looking forward to this outdoor season. Discus and

“I like outdoor a lot better than indoor, mainly because you don’t have to sit inside all day and you can actually

to pull him late in the game to put the Mavericks on a 6-on5, and then the confidence he had in his team that they’d comeback, “I had a lot of confidence late; I think back to the weekend we played Michigan Tech, and we were down late in those games, and we found ways to tie it and then win the game. I think games like that really

set us up for tonight’s win.”

With the victory, MSU clinched a No. 1-seed for the NCAA tournament.

Unfortunately, the Mavs arguably got the worst draw in the entire tournament.

Playing in the East Region in Providence, the Mavericks were matched up with the Providence Friars in the first round. This essentially makes

the first-round game a home game for the Friars, as the Mavericks will look for their first ever D-I tournament victory.

The game against Providence will take place Saturday at noon. You can watch the game televised on ESPNews.

March Madness begins with hearts and brackets broken With the tournament entering the Sweet 16, the competition looks to hit an all-time high

ANDREW NEURERER STAFF WRITER It’s the best time of the year for basketball fans. Millions of brackets were made, but only one remains perfect after the first two rounds of March Madness.

Round one is arguably the best part of the tournament, there’s about three-to-four games playing continuously from 11:15 a.m. to about midnight. During this thrilling time, teams are determined to make upsets and break records.

Fairleigh Dickinson, Wofford, Belmont, UC Irvine, UCF and Liberty made a little history of their own, as each team earned their first win in NCAA Tournament history.

Wofford, led by their threepoint shooting, were able to outshoot Seton Hall. On that note, Fletcher Magee broke Division I’s all-time record for three pointers made.

The Big Ten had eight teams entering the tournament, the most in conference history.

They were 7-1 after round one, with only the Wisconsin Badgers losing to Oregon.

The Minnesota Gophers upset Louisville on the first game of the tournament, but were unable to get past the No. 2 seed, Michigan State. There was no UMBC type magic this year for the

16-seeds, but they didn’t go down with a fight.

Gonzaga was the only team that had a commanding lead from start-to-finish.

Arguably the best team in the nation, the Duke Blue Devils, caught themselves in a bind Sunday, versus UCF. Thanks to Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett, Duke was able to sneak by after putting the team up late in the second half.

With the game tied up after the ninth inning, the teams continued until the fourteenth inning, where the Beavers scored three runs to win the game, 10-7.

Due to weather conditions, the game against Washburn was delayed as was the rest of the Emporia State Classic.

Next up the Mavericks begin conference play with a doubleheader against the Concordia St. Paul Bears.

The first game is at 11 a.m., followed by the other at 1 p.m.

Auburn falls just short of that being the five-seed, but they were able to knock of the Kansas Jayhawks. There haven’t been too many upsets and when there were, they were shortly knocked out of the tournament in the Round of 32.

The Sweet 16 will begin on Thursday, with the Elite 8 following right after on Saturday.

“Mothers and Sons” play opens Wednesday; tackles relationships and acceptance

MARK REYNOLDS STAFF WRITER The Department of Theater & Dance at Minnesota State University, Mankato will open the show “Mothers and Sons” by Terrence McNally March 27 in the Andreas Theater at the Earley Center for Performing Arts.

The show tells the story of Katherine Gerard, and her return to New York to confront her late son’s partner Cal. The show is a sequel to “Andre’s Mother,” which McNally wrote 20 years prior.

The show is being directed

by David T. Loudermilk, who is pursuing a master’s in fine arts (MFA) with a major in directing at the University.

“I was very familiar with ‘Andre’s Mother,’” Loudermilk said. “I used a monologue from it in high school

and then actually continued to use that monologue and was moved by the one-act play. So, when I found out that Terrence McNally wrote

a sequel to it, I was fascinated.”

“The sequel actually opened on Broadway five years ago to today, so it’s

kind of cool that we’re opening this week because it will be the five-year anniversary of it opening on Broadway,” he added.

Loudermilk has been directing since 2005 when he completed his bachelor’s degree in directing from Catawba College in North Carolina. He discussed his favorite part of directing.

“I think being given the words on a page and then taking the magic of theater and putting it on the stage, creating a picture. I’m getting the audience involved for whatever reaction they have to the show by the time the show is over,” he said.

As part of that theater magic, Loudermilk put a unique spin on “Mothers and Sons”. Rather than being in the traditional stage where the audience is on one side, he used an “alley” configuration: a long, skinny stage with audience members on two opposite sides.

“The show, for me, is very realistic,” he said. “I connect to the script. I had some

Horror movie “Us” offers more than thrills and chills Jordan Peele’s second film proves he is more than a one-hit wonder

KOLBY SPOMER STAFF WRITER When “Get Out” released, I initially was a little underwhelmed. I thought the movie was good, but I didn’t believe that it deserved its perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes or its near universal appointment as the best horror movie of the last 20 years.

Over the next 6 months, I’ve watched the movie at least 10 more times and I can confidently say that I was wrong and “Get Out” is one of the best horror movies ever released, let alone in

the past 20 years. The way Peele wraps a thrilling and entertaining horror plot around the sub-text of cultural appropriation is something any horror film worth its salt should strive to mimic. It’s safe to say that I was very excited to see his newest film, “Us”.

Apparently I wasn’t alone, as the film made a whopping $70 million on its opening weekend, the most for an original film since James Cameron’s “Avatar”. This speaks more to Hollywood’s obsession with sequels and remakes than it does the films quality, but it’s still impressive nonetheless. However, box office success does not always mean a movie is actually good, with recent films like “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and “Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom”

garnering over $1 billion despite being hot, smelly dumpster fires.

Thankfully this is not the

case with “Us”, as I can happily confirm that Peele has crushed it once again. With “Us” he has delivered a film

as good, if not better, than his last work.

The second in a line of “social thrillers” Peele plans on making, “Us” doesn’t shy away from any tough questions, asking its audience to think about themselves and what they would do if presented a chance to rise above their lot in life. I won’t go any further into the “real” message of the movie, as it may cheapen it for some, but just know that this movie has a message along the same lines as the one presented in his last film.

While a thoughtful message is great and all, if it’s delivered in a garbage can nobody is going to care

Leikeli47 storms Amsterdam Bar and Hall in St. Paul GAGE CURETON STAFF WRITER As a near full moon rose over St. Paul, hip-hop and R&B artist Leikeli47 emerged on-stage at Amsterdam Bar and Hall Thursday, March 21.

On tour promoting her second full-length album “Acrylic,” Leikeli hit the stage amidst a purple fog that wafted towards fans.

An atmosphere of mysticism hung in the air as fans recognized Leikeli’s performance staple and trademark - a bandana obscuring her face and identity.

Known for covering her face with a bandana or balaclava for all appearances and performances, Leikeli’s magic is not only her experimentally raucous lyrics and production, but also her savagely-warm stage presence that invites your attention.

Leikeli’s setlist featured songs off her latest album “Acrylic,” and her 2017 album “Wash & Set.” Perhaps the real showcaser of the performance was “Girl Blunt” off her latest album.

“Girl Blunt” begins with a beat reminiscent of the oldschool production-style of

hip-hop in its younger years but it quickly evolves towards contemporary style.

“I’m not with the disrespect, miss me with that indirect,” sings Leikeli. “Smoke ‘em like a cigarette, puff pass, this shit is a girl blunt, I only smoke girl blunts.”

Pungent and catchy, fans knew the song was coming and you could smell the concert-goers’ excitement.

“Post That,” is a testament to all the Instagram models who are forever in the pursuit of “that shot” or that one photo that showcases all their 21st century glamor.

“Hit that pose, take that flick - check your angle, post that sh*t” are lyrics that float amongst fast-paced beats that thundered throughout Amsterdam Bar and Hall.

Loudermilk’s favorite part of this show is the cast. With only four actors, the cast can intimately connect with the audience in a way that isn’t possible in larger productions.

“Part of what McNally wanted in writing this play was an idea of generations and us understanding – even if they may not always be

about it. The film is amazing all around. The plot beats along nicely, maintaining a consistent pace throughout.

The acting is superb, with lead Lupita Nyongo delivering a performance that should garner her another Oscar nomination.

Most importantly, the direction in the film is phenomenal, as Peele achieves a near Hitchcock-level of audience control, keeping you exactly where he wants you the whole time. That being namely on the edge of your seat.

All that being said, the film

isn’t without its flaws. The writing feels a tad awkward at parts, mostly in the lighter scenes. Peele’s comedy background proves he is a funny guy, and there are funny lines found in the movie.

Some of the lines feel forced though, and the film may have been a tad stronger with less humor.

Despite this small misstep, the film is easily the best I have seen this year and deserves the heaps of praise it has already received. I can definitely see myself rewatching this one for a long, long time.
