Green transportation fee proposal

Parking initiative placed on MSSA General Election ballot MEGAN KADLEC

news editor

megan kadlec • msu reporter

A voting referendum for parking per mit and parking ticket fee increases has been set to appear at the MSSA general election this month. The “Green Transpor tation Fee” would increase student fees by 75 cents per credit hour and would improve Mankato’s bus system as well as MSU’s bike storage. The Minnesota State Student Association favored the referendum in their Wednesday meeting. MSSA President Matt Lexcen and Vice President Moriah Miles were noted as being in favor of the initiative, stating that bus ridership should increase, utilizing the proposed bus system improvements available through the passage of the Green Transpor tation Fee. Lexcen also added

that because students were considering parking per mit changes and bus system improvements, the Student Association and MSSA would not suppor t the elimination of the 430-stall Free Lot in the near future. In order for a referendum to be passed and be binding on MSSA off icials, at least 50 percent of votes cast in the April 10 election must be in favor of the bill. “The vote shall not be valid unless the number of ballots cast is at least 50 percent of the number cast in the last MSSA annual election,” said David Cowan in an email regarding the referendum. Cowan is the Facilities Ser vices Director at MSU. Also up for grabs at the April 10 election are 28 out of 30 Senate seats and the titles of MSSA President and Vice President.

In order for the referendum to be placed on the ballot, MSSA will be required to develop language that can be put on the ballot, hold at least one public hearing regarding the initiative and “shall thereafter submit the initiative to a vote at the next regular or special MSSA election,” according to MSSA’s constitution, which can be found on their website. “Putting any initiative on a ballot requires advocates to do their best to publicize the proposal’s merits and generate suff icient suppor t at the polls,” according to Cowan’s email. If passed, the Green Transpor tation Fee’s free bus ridership, bike rack capacity improvement and expanded bus ser vice would drastically change the manner in which students, faculty and staff

Fighting cancer with a purple toilet Sorority raises money in an unconventional manner

While many individuals working to raise money for a cause have bake sales, put on events, or ask for money door-to-door, the women at Alpha Sigma Alpha have developed a unique way to fight back against cancer and raise money for Relay for Life. The fundraising campaign, “Flush Out Cancer” seeks to raise money by strategically placing a bedazzled purple toilet on the lawns of Mankato residents, urging them to donate money to their cause to have the toilet removed. “We wanted to do it in a fun and unique way rather than just asking people for money,” said Alpha Sigma Alpha member Cassy Humble. “We thought that the purple toilet would be the perfect thing.” While the concept is unique, it is not the first time a toilet has

been used in fundraising efforts. “We did it last year in my small hometown back in Iowa and we had sent it around our town and it looked like a big hit,” Humble said. In today’s society, there are multiple organizations devoted to raising money for cancer research as well as celebrate the lives of individuals who have battled cancer, remembered loved ones who have been lost. “At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length,” according to Relay for Life’s website. Mankato’s Relay for Life will be held on April 14th and teams will walk from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Students, faculty, staff and com-

A diplomatic visit

Ivory Coast Ambassador speaks at MSU ALLISON MATTHEWS

staff writer Côte D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) Ambassador to the United States of America Daoudo Diabaté met for a question and answer session at the International Student Association office Monday. Diabaté said that he was thankful for being able to speak at Minnesota State University, Mankato for African Night Saturday. Dr. Stephen Momoh Baba also spoke at the event. “It was a great opportunity to emerge in African [culture] while being so far away from home,” Diabaté said. African Student Association sponsored African Night, which showed the traditions and culture of Africa along with authentic food, drew about 1,000 people. About 700 international students from 77 countries attend MSU according to the Elizabeth and Wynn Kearney International Center web page on MSU’s website. In the international student population at MSU, about 23 African countries are represented. In spring 2011, fewer than five students from Ivory Coast attended MSU, according to International Student and Scholar Services, yet that student population is growing on campus. African Student Association invited Diabaté to attend and speak at African Night. Diabaté attended a dinner with MSU students from Ivory Coast

Sunday. He said he was glad to see that many of them are studying International Relations and considering careers in diplomacy. Diabaté encourages MSU International Relations students or students interested in diplomacy to look into internships with the Ivory Coast embassy in Washington D.C. He said internships typically last one to two months, depending on the program. Beyan Gonowolo, founder of MSU’s Liberian Student Community, was thrilled to meet with Diabaté and learn more about his experiences as an ambassador. During the question and answer session, Gonowolo said he was inspired that Diabaté worked closely with Liberia, since he is from there.

Diabaté held the position First Counselor at the Ivorian Embassy to Liberia and Sierra Leone from 1979 to 1981. “When you are a young diplomat, your first post is something to keep in mind,” Diabaté said. “I’m pleased to have begun my career [in Liberia].” “ASA is working very hard to get people like [Diabaté] on campus,” Gonowolo said. “We really appreciate [Diabaté] coming here.” Diabaté said he appreciated visiting MSU because of the friendly atmosphere and the beautiful campus. “The African students on campus are building a sense of community,” Gonowolo said. “It brings students together. We embrace each other and live in the beauty of that.”

Facilities cool down early

MEGAN KADLEC

news editor

The grass is changing from a dirty shade of brown to luscious and green, trees are beginning to sprout leaves, and jackets are being traded in for shorts and f lip-f lops. Most individuals who have been on the Minnesota State University, Mankato campus in the past two weeks have noticed that many buildings are extremely warm. Cooling within the buildings will begin April 2, five weeks ahead of the 2011 cooling startup. Due to the early spring weather, the Physical Plant Office at MSU has been facing difficulties in maintaining comfortable business temperatures. Unlike in a house or apartment building, MSU’s heating and cooling systems are centralized, meaning that it takes time and energy to switch

from heat to air conditioning throughout the buildings. Boilers and chillers heat, or cool, water that then circulates throughout the campus’ buildings through a series of coils and pipes. Each spring, Facilities Management staff must review weather forecasts to determine an appropriate date to transition from heat to air conditioning. The staff must consider low nighttime temperatures and ensure that a sharp change in weather patterns will not cause the pipes in the cooling system to freeze. Nighttime low temperatures generally stabilize above freezing during the second week in April. During the next week, the staff at the Physical Plant Office will complete the final inspection of the system and cooling should begin Monday.

Students advocate for bottled water ban ELISE KONERZA

assistant news editor The concept of banning bottled water is slowly seeping into college campus activist groups around the world. The idea has been implemented in more than 20 universities already. While some universities have not completely complied with the ban, they have been using partial bans of just bottled water. Manufacturers, realizing a threat to their sales, have released a video in response to the movement on YouTube indicating that students have “misinformation” about plastic water bottles. The video, “Student Activism: 101” put the concept of banning bottled water alongside other student activism campaigns and introduced in-

formation relative to health, safety and its environmental impact, Chris Hogan, the vice president of Communications of The International Bottled Water Association. “What we are seeing is well-known anti-bottled water groups are recruiting college students to spread misinformation about bottled water on college campuses. Those groups are capturing the attention of college students by making highly emotional and incorrect statements and claims — such as the threat of losing water as a basic human right and the privatization of water,” Hogan said. “But if these students checked some of this information out for themselves, they would see that this anti-bottled water rhetoric is simply not true.”

FLUSH OUT CANCER “I think the goal is reachable if the whole community just has fun with it.” continued from 1 munity members will “It’s just a big celebration,” Humble said. Alpha Sigma Alpha decided that they would started their fundraiser on Monday by placing the purple toilet in the yard of the Mayor or at the Mankato Department of Public Safety. “We figured that if [the fundraiser] started off strong in the community that it would just keep going from there,” Humble said. The plan is to continue passing the purple toilet around the community until April 14, raising more than $1,000 for cancer research. “I know when I did it in my town of 200 people, we raised almost $1,000, so I don’t know how to even [calculate] a big city like Mankato,” Humble said. “We’re hoping for as much as possible. I think the goal is reachable if the whole community just has fun with it.”

Humble said that there is no schedule for moving the toilet, and that depending on the time of day, someone will be available to come and remove the toilet from any given yard. “There’s not a limit to how many times or at what time we can move the toilet,” Humble said. Once the purple toilet lands in someone’s yard, they have three options. The first option is to give the sorority $10 to remove the toilet. The second is to pay $15 to remove the toilet and have it sent to whomever you wish. The third option, which will cost $20, removes the toilet, sends it to a friend’s house and gives you insurance that the toilet will not find itself in your yard again, something Humble refers to as insurance. While Humble expects the fundraiser to run smoothly in Mankato, she is also aware that some individuals might refuse

to participate, in which case she said the sorority will eventually remove the toilet, taking it somewhere else, without a fee. “In my hometown, if [someone] didn’t want to donate or pay for us to remove it, we would just remove the toilet and keep it going,” Humble said. “We didn’t make it a big deal.” Because purple toilets are most likely difficult to find, Alpha Sigma Alpha decided to make decorating the toilet an art project the entire sorority was a part of. “We took an old toilet that someone had extra or that that they hadn’t thrown out yet. We ended up spray painting it purple, bedazzling the lid and painting our letters for Alpha Sigma Alpha and Relay for Life on it,” Humble said. “It turned into a big art project.” Individuals with any questions about the fundraiser should contact Humble at 515-368-4750.

I’m not a movie reviewer. I haven’t read the books and at first I thought it was some sort of weird Twilight movie with a kid-killing twist. So, before you complain and tell your friends, “This Ratke kid hasn’t even read the book, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about!” You’re right. I agree with you. - THE ACTORS WERE FANTASTIC. JENNIFER LAWRENCE HAS REALLY COME INTO HER OWN AFTER WINTER’S BONE (WEIRD MOVIE WHERE SHE AGAIN DOES GREAT IN THE WOODS). WOODY HARRELSON PLAYS A PERFECT ROLE OF A DRUNK MENTOR AND ELIZABETH BANKS HAS 3,203 POUNDS OF MAKE-UP ON. I’M NOT MAKING THIS UP. GOOGLE HER NOW. JOE MAUER ALSO MAKES A GUEST-APPEARANCE. - THE PLOT IS FANTASTIC. WITHOUT SPOILING IT FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T SEEN IT, THE REASON WHY THE HUNGER GAMES ARE HELD ACTUALLY MAKES SOME SORT OF SENSE. WAIT, AM I TALKING MYSELF INTO THINKING THAT CHILDREN FIGHTING TO THE DEATH FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES IS A GOOD THING? berty, getting killed viciously all for the sake of entertainment? Wowzas. A few of my buddies and I went to watch it on Sunday night (five single guys... We live sad, sad lives.) I really enjoyed the film, loved Woody Harrelson, wanted to marry Jennifer Lawrence and figured out that I would be the first to die if this thing actually existed. I’m not very strong. I’ve come to terms with that. Here are my pros and cons from the movie:

CONS

- IT’S A MOVIE BASED ON A BOOK. FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN’T READ THE BOOKS, I WILL TELL YOU TO NEVER GET INVOLVED IN A CONVERSATION ABOUT THE MOVIE WITH SOMEONE WHO HAS READ THEM. YOU WILL LOSE THE BATTLE. THEY WILL COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW PEETA LOOKS DIFFERENTLY THAN THEY THOUGHT, HOW SOMEONE’S HAIR WAS THE WRONG COLOR AND THAT LENNY KRAVITZ WASN’T ACTUALLY IN THE BOOK (WHO KNEW?) DON’T GET INTO A BATTLE, MY FRIENDS. SIT DOWN, ENJOY YOUR POPCORN AND TELL THEM THEY ARE RIGHT. - AGAIN, THE MOVIE IS BASED AROUND KILLING YOUNG TEENAGERS. ONCE YOU HEAR THE REASONING AND GET A GRASP ON THE MOVIE, IT’S NOT ALL THAT BIG OF A DEAL, BUT THERE ARE A FEW SCENES WHERE I LOOKED AT MY BUDDY AND SAID, “HOLY SH**, DID THAT JUST HAPPEN? THIS IS GETTING VIOLENT.” THE MOVIE IS RATED A SURPRISINGLY PG-13, BUT DON’T LET THAT FOOL YOU. THERE IS A LOT OF VIOLENCE, SO IF YOU CAN’T STOMACH IT, DON’T BUY MIKE AND IKE’S. YOU MIGHT THROW THEM UP. - SPEAKING OF FOOD, DON’T BUY A SMALL POPCORN. THE MOVIE IS TWO HOURS AND 20 MINUTES LONG. OF COURSE, I DIDN’T THINK TO LOOK HOW LONG WAS IT. I FINISHED MY POPCORN DURING THE PREVIEWS. I WANTED MORE POPCORN, BUT IT’S $38 FOR A SMALL THESE DAYS. TRANSLATION: YOU’LL BE SITTING FOR A WHILE. BE PREPARED.

BOTTLED WATER BAN “A ban on the sale of bottled water on college campuses restricts freedom of choice for students to choose one of the healthiest beverages available in vending machines.”

Reporter • Page 5

OPINION

Santorum advocates for theocracy

continued from 3 The new video points out that bottled water is similar to other packaged drinks except it has no sugar, no caffeine and no calories. Bottled water has the lowest carbon footprint, the lowest water footprint and the highest curbside recycling rates of packaged drinks. The video states that the FDA stringently regulates bottled water to a safety standard that is higher than tap water. Bottled water has caused zero illnesses in the past decade, while tap water is responsible for almost 16.4 million illnesses each year. But removing a healthy choice from the shelves is something some see as restrictive to the freedom of choice and may be a contributor to less consumption of a healthy beverage. “A ban on the sale of bottled water on college campuses restricts freedom of choice for students to choose one of the healthiest beverages available in vending machines,” Hogan said. If bottled water is removed from the shelves, students will be more apt to choose a product that is unhealthy containing high contents of sugar, caffeine and other additives. Hogan suggests that instead of banning bottled water, more initiative should

be taken to improve recycling rates of all packaged drinks. “Bottled water containers are the most highly recycled containers in curbside programs, and the EPA has calculated that plastic bottled water containers make up just 0.03 percent of the U.S. waste stream. So, getting rid of bottled water on campus will not make a significant improvement to waste issues,” Hogan said. Hogan encourages that students should aim to improve the recycling rates of all beverages and not single out one of the healthiest drinks on the shelf. Support for the ban comes from Ban the Bottle, a non-profit organization that raises awareness about the economic environmental costs associated with using plastic bottles. According to the organization, if a person were to drink eight glasses of water a day from tap water it would only cost about 49 cents annually, while the same consumption relative to plastic containers costs a person about $1,400 a year. Ban the Bottle has a concern for the chemical antimony, which is used in the production of plastic bottles. The chemical in low doses is a contributor to depression and dizziness; in large doses it can lead to death. The goal

of the organization although is to primarily focus efforts in the protection of the environment. In September, the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., protested in favor of bottled water on campus. The campus’ College Republicans protested and handed out bottled water in the school after the administration decided to rid bottled water from vending machines. The school implemented 31 “hydration stations,” costing the university $20,000 to make it easier for students to refill their water bottles. To support the ban, it is a step toward protecting the environment, reducing campus beverage costs and bolstering the universities’ image. Not supporting the ban constitutes for the beliefs that people will turn to less healthy alternatives, bottled water as a practical emergency water supply, convenience, campus tap water sources may not be as clean and the right that people have a choice. “They are still selling soda bottles and other drinks using plastic so all they would be doing is taking away a student’s incentive to buy something other than soda,” Dylan James, an engineering student at Minnesota State University, Mankato said.

contributor Rick Santorum says American law should never violate Biblical commands and often it doesn’t. For example, both prohibit murder and theft. Yet, the conflicts are enormous. American law nourishes capitalism while the Bible would destroy it by commanding us to sell all we own and give the proceeds to the poor. The Constitution protects Freedom of Religion, while the Bible requires death for non-believers. Pre-marital sex

is not a crime in the United States, but the Bible says women who are not virgins at the time of marriage must be executed. It is not against the law to work on the sabbath in the United States, but the Bible proclaims death to sabbath-workers. And the list goes on and on. What Santorum advocates is theocracy, a form of government which claims to represent God’s Will as found in scripture. It was tried in the American colonies until the Constitution outlawed it, and it is in effect today in such countries as Afghanistan and Iran. A common result of theocracy is merciless suppression of even the most basic human rights, religious hatred and violence spanning centuries, and death and more death. Do Americans really want the United States to go down that road under a President Santorum? Probably not, but lest we grow complacent, he is winning primaries while the media virtually ignores his theocratic blueprint for the United States.

Research monkey importer facing cruelty charges LOS ANGELES (AP) — An importer of research monkeys was set to stand trial Monday on cruelty charges after 15 primates died during an international f light. Robert Matson Conyers, a Florida animal broker, faces 10 counts involving a 2008 plane trip from Guyana. Officials say Conyers was shipping 25 monkeys to a buyer in Bangkok, but the shipment was refused transit in China and returned to Los Angeles. The monkeys wound up on a circuitous trip across thousands of miles with stops in Bangkok, Miami, and twice in Los Angeles. They suffered from neglect, starvation and hypothermia in transit, authorities say, and 15 eventually died. Fourteen marmosets, five white-fronted capuchins, and six squirrel monkeys were turned back in China over paperwork issues, such as irregularities in the shipping documents. Officials in Los Angeles found 14 of the 25 monkeys packed into crates were dead. Another had to be destroyed. Los Angeles Zoo veterinarians administered emergency care to the surviving six marmosets, a capuchin and three squirrel monkeys. The surviving capuchin had to be euthanized. The rest are recovering at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park. The advocacy group Stop Animal Cruelty Now, or SAEN, said the monkeys were dehydrated and resorted to cannibalism during their arduous trip across the world. Once the story of the monkeys’ nightmarish f light was reported, monkey imports to Los Angeles were halted. SAEN said the United States is the largest importer of monkeys coming from the Philippines, Indonesia, Guyana and Kenya. Most are destined for laboratory experiments. Conyers could face up to six months in jail and a $20,000 fine if convicted.

PARKING REFERENDUM “Criticism was received that the PAC failed to build an incremental rate model spread during the past four years.” continued from 1 travel to campus. These ser vices would be expected to reduce vehicle parking demand, allowing the University to effectively deal with what could be considered a parking stall pitfall. If the initiative is passed, the proposed fee increases in bus passes would become void as students would no longer be required to pay for Mankato bus ser vices around campus. Volunteers ser ving on the Parking Advisor y Committee (PAC) heard 33 suggestions about the state of MSU’s transpor tation system and parking lots at the March 14th Annual Hearing on Parking and Transpor tation Policies, Budget and Capital Improvements. In a “post-hearing” recommendation, the PAC endorsed a $1,460,020 overall income plan for the 2013 f iscal year which would include per mits, f ine collections and visitor pay lot receipts. The income plan was accompanied by a $1,455,ooo spending plan as well as a Five Year Capital Improvement Program that includes $4.6 million in parking lot repairs during

the next f ive years. This program is being for warded to the administration for f inal approval and the PAC understands that the plan would be examined and evaluated each year in order to best f inance as many parking lot repairs as made possible by the University’s parking income. Parking per mit rate increases were proposed in the face of parking lot repairs needed for both the 600-stall Perfor ming Ar ts Lot 16 and Gage’s 500-stall Lot 1. “Criticism was received that the PAC failed to build in an incremental rate model spread over the past four years which would have made the recommended changes less of a problem,” stated Cowan’s email. “PAC members explained that no rates were recommended over the last four years as salar y freezes, tuition hikes, and the threat of layoffs made rate hike proposals ‘nonstar ters.’” For those students with strong opinions on the proposal, a public hearing will be held within the next two weeks before the initiative will be put up to a vote April 10.

Alvin and the Chipmunks, Chipwrecked

War, famine, disease, rape, corruption, bigotry and another Alvin and the Chipmunks movie. The Chipmunks and the Chipettes go on a sea cruise and eventually become stranded on a desert island with Dave. There is basically no more plot complications worth describing. As if I need to tell you to avoid this. Even if you have kids, you would be doing them and yourself a favor by providing them with some form of entertainment that isn’t so lazy and grating. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked will be available April 24 on Netf lix and Redbox, and immediately on digital rental/purchase.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

If you like your Oscar bait forced and exploitative, this might be the movie for you. Oskar Schell’s father is killed in the World Trade Center on 9/11. A year later, while searching through his father’s old things, he finds an item that leads him on a scavenger hunt across New York, coming into contact with all kinds of people, and helping him overcome some of the challenges of having Asperger’s. There are some aspects of the story that could make a great movie, but the handling of the whole thing has drawn much criticism. “Pretentious,” “labored”, and “manipulative” are all words that have been used to describe this movie, whether it’s the use of 9/11, or the shrill, annoying protagonist played by a non-actor. Being that the film was singled out as Oscar bait from conception, it is a bit ironic that this is one of the most negatively received Best Picture nominees ever. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close will be available immediately on digital rental/ purchase but due to Warner Bros.’ new rental agreement, won’t be available on Netf lix until May 22, with a Redbox date currently unconfirmed.

A Dangerous Method

Finally, all the excitement of reading your psychology textbook comes to the big screen. Directed by David Cronenberg, Method is about the real life work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, and how they greatly advanced the field of psychology. Things become a little more complicated when Jung takes on a patient with whom he starts an affair, herself later becoming a physician. Much as I appreciate David Cronenberg for taking on such serious dramas in the past few years, I can’t help but wonder when he’ll get back to doing movies where people horribly mutate all the time. Wishful thinking, I guess. The movie headlines a great main cast, with Michael Fassbender, Viggo Mortenson and Kiera Knightley all receiving praise for their performances. The real test, it seems, is just how much interest one can get out of the material before it becomes unappealing. A Dangerous Method will be available immediately on Netf lix, Redbox, and digital rental/download.

Odd Future’s The OF Tape Vol. 2

CHRISTIAN HAGEN | web editor

T

hey were the talk of the industry just a year ago, a group of DIY teenagers making beats and verses so intensely confrontational and intentionally controversial they drew terms like “horrorcore” and got angry letters from parent groups, LGBT advocates, feminists, and, well, pretty much everyone. All the while, their leader Tyler, The Creator dropped a hit album, they stormed Jimmy Fallon’s show, and they won awards and recognition from MTV and rap mags alike. Things changed fast for these kids. Money, fame, a new television series on Adult Swim. You’d think

they’d feel pressure from this newfound success to come with their best game on their latest release, the group-made mixtape The OF Tape Vol. 2. But it becomes readily apparent that Odd Future doesn’t care at all about what anyone else expects. The first half of OF Tape Vol. 2 is so spotty and often obnoxious that it’s hard to believe these guys got more money to make this than they had when they made the far more consistent Radical tape two years ago. “Bitches” and “NY (Ned Flanders)” are hastily-

WOOF “Their members have so many different styles that bringing them all together is at once impressive and maddening.” continued from 7 produced throw-aways with a few solid verses but nothing memorable. “Ya Know” sticks out like a trippy sore thumb, a throwback DJ track that grates as much as it grooves, and really doesn’t fit the group’s aesthetic at all. In fact, it isn’t until the creep-soul of “Analog 2/Wheels 2” that the album finds its footing. The blend of Tyler’s subdued darkness with Frank Ocean’s anachronistic croon provides a surprisingly pleasant backyard summer jam, even as its lyrics maintain the group’s rape-and-murder theme. But it’s the track’s second half, obviously evoking the classic rap sounds of Notorious BIG, that reminds listeners that these guys are as much fans of rap as they are the oft-labeled “next big thing.” Unexpectedly, it’s not Tyler but rather Hodgy Beats who brings the hardest flow on the fiery three-track swing of “50,” “Snow White,” and, one of the album’s two best songs, “Rella.” The latter twerks and slams even as the three MCs it features (Hodgy, Domo Genesis and Tyler) bring their strongest throw-downs. “I f**k this flow,” Hodgy says to open the song, and then proceeds to do just that, setting a high standard until Tyler’s lightspeed, filthy closing verse invades and absolutely crushes it. It is one of the best verses he’s ever produced. Their greatest strength is also their

biggest weakness: Their members have so many different styles that bringing them all together is at once impressive and maddening. They have a hard time deciding when to be serious and when to aim for dark humor. One minute, they’re playing a slow jam about kidnapping women and drowning them, and the next they’re dropping a fastkicking attack rap against critics and rival crews. Which is why their best songs find some middle between these polarized sounds, and no song they’ve ever made is more illustrative of this than “Oldie,” a 10-minute, stripped down drum-and-keyboard track that features every member of the crew, including the newly “freed” Earl Sweatshirt. “Oldie” is the musical equivalent of what people have always wanted to believe Odd Future really is: A group of friends hanging around and rapping to each other for fun, not trying to shoot for million-dollar whips or to get girls or to be the biggest rappers in the game. They’re rapping for the fun of rapping, kids with a passion and talent for hip-hop music who’ve come together to share their dreams. It’s a sweet idea, unusually sweet for a group so infamous for their controversies. If only they could draw that vibe out for a full record, they could have made something really special. • web photo

Weird Rap: A Primer E CHRISTIAN HAGEN | web editor

veryday hip-hop is great, but after your Kanyes and your Lil’ Waynes, aren’t you sometimes left wanting something a little more...out there? Here are a few tracks to get you started down the rabbit hole of the weird:

Earl Sweatshirt “Earl”

Alien-laced trip-hop with discordant vocal samples around a hustling flow so complex it can barely be pinned down by any recognizable time signatures.

Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble “Hunting Season”

If you haven’t already delved into the madness of Odd Future, “Earl” is one foul-mouthed, trippy, disgusting place to start.

Danny Brown “Radio Head”

The mix of thick-throated poet Crescent Moon with blues-rock band Big Trouble is an unexpectedly affecting combination from our own Twin Cities.

Das Racist “Who’s That? Brooown!”

One of the most disjointed loops in the history of rap music twists under inventive, hilarious lines that will leave you breathless with disbelief.

Shabazz Palaces “Free Press and Curl”

Forget “Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.” Das Racist is one of the most inventive groups in rap because their sense of humor extends to some of the wildest samples and beats anywhere.

MSU Women’s Tennis:

The Mavericks competed in Sartell, Minn. last

Saturday, falling to Winona State 2-7 before dominating Bemidji State 9-0. Freshmen Shealyn Bakke, Laura May and Joey Bosch were victorious against both Winona and Bemidji. MSU is now 7-8 overall and 5-2 in the NSIC.

While there are still a few questions left to answer, the Minnesota State, Mankato baseball team should at least feel comfortable that it’s on the right track. In their return to action after over two weeks off, the Mavericks swept the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in a four-game set over the weekend, taking a pair on Saturday by scores of 4-3 and 9-2 followed by a pair on Sunday by scores of 5-3 and 9-6. “Our goal going into every conference weekend is to win three out of four games, which we did,” said MSU head coach Matt Magers. The Mavericks avoided the biggest scare of the weekend in game one thanks largely to the steady hand of sophomore pitcher Bryce Bellin (3-0). After falling behind 2-3 early, junior leadoff man Lucas Skjefte scored the tying run on a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third inning, but neither team was able to claim the victory through seven innings. But Bellin was able to hang around and keep his cool to preserve the tie at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Duluth’s pitching staff, on

the other hand, didn’t handle the pressure quite as well. After senior second baseman Matt Kuchenbecker grounded out to start the inning, reserve pitcher Andy Yetzer walked three straight batters before plunking senior first baseman Matt Odegaard to allow senior third baseman Patrick Dockendorf, the winning run, to walk home. “Bellin didn’t have his best stuff, but he battled through it and he was able to give us a complete game even after it went into an eighth inning,” Magers said. “That’s kind of what you want out of a veteran pitcher; for him to be able to figure things out, settle down a little bit and be able to take control, and he did a nice job of that.” Confidence in the rotation continued to build after senior Harvey Martin (5-0) did his part in MSU’s 9-2 victory in game two. “Harvey Martin threw all seven innings, struck out seven guys and only walked one, so he’s going to be around the strike zone. He won’t usually strike out a lot of guys but his ball moves and not too many guys are going to be able to make a lot of contact off of him,” said Magers.

Freshman shortstop Connor McCallum drove in two runs with a single to right field as part of a five-run offensive explosion in the first inning of game two. McCallum and Dockendorf would both finish with a pair of RBIs while Skjefte, senior Jeremy Sudbeck, junior Jon Flattery and senior Mike Eckhart each added one. Magers’ continued to like what he saw from his pitchers through Sunday’s games, beginning with senior Ben Kincaid (2-0) pitching six and two-thirds of MSU’s 5-3 win in game three. “Kincaid only struck out four guys, but his key is that he only walked two,” said Magers. “I thought he pitched particularly well in a lot of three-ball counts. He was able to bear down, make some good pitches and eliminate the base runners.” Kuchenbecker set the tone on offense with a two-run homer in the first inning before Dockendorf drove in the winning runs with a three-run homer in the fifth. To complete the sweep, sophomore Tyler Ockuly (2-1) finished the weekend on the mound and did his part in MSU’s 9-6 game four win.

shannon rathmanner • msu reporter Senior second baseman Matt Kuchenbecker follows through on his first inning two-run homer that put MSU ahead early in Sunday’s 5-3 win.

“He’s got an outstanding breaking pitch and a curveball that’s really tough to hit,” Magers said. “He ran into some trouble in the fifth after he left a couple fastballs up over the plate and missed some spots, and ultimately [Duluth was] able to capitalize on that.” The Mavericks also liked what

they saw from senior closer Nick Sutherland, who picked up two saves on Sunday to double his season total. With this weekend’s pair of doubleheaders at the University of Sioux Falls representing the final nonconference games of the spring, things are starting to heat up for MSU.

Meyer reaches 900-win plateau as Mavericks take three of four JOEY DENTON

staff writer

Getting tallies in the win column is the most important aspect that schools are looking for when hiring a new head coach, and it’s safe to say Minnesota State, Mankato made the right choice 27 years ago when it hired Lori Meyer. On Sunday, the Mavericks’ head softball coach earned her 900th victory when her team defeated Bemidji State 12-0 in five innings. Meyer added another win to her impressive resume just hours later with an 8-0 victory over the Beavers to complete the MSU sweep. The University of Upper Iowa graduate first took the Maverick softball head coaching job back in 1985, and turned MSU softball into a solid program with annual success, not just producing numerous wins and great athletes, but great students as well. Including this past week-

end’s victories, Meyer’s career record is currently 901-5733, and in the last five seasons the program has been one of the best in the country with a 216-79 record while making some NCAA tournament appearances. While she has been coaching for the Mavericks, she has had six teams finish with a grade point average in the top-five in NCAA Division-II softball, including the highest GPA in Division-II with a 3.31 mark in 1996. Meyer, a Storm Lake, Iowa native, is a seven-time NSIC Coach of the Year and also a three-time Midwest Regional Coach of the Year. Sophomore MSU third baseman Lindsay Erickson agrees that Meyer is a special coach. “It’s such an honor to be on her team,” said Erickson.

“What makes her different is her love for the game. She’ll do anything for us and go out of her way to help us. She deserves everything she’s accomplished so far. “ Erickson was just named the NSIC Player of the Week after posting a .450 batLindsay Erickson ting average and nine hits in 20 at-bats in the six games the team played last week. The Big Lake, Minn. native is the second consecutive Maverick to win the Player of the Week award. She also drove in six runs; two of them coming in coach Meyer’s 900th 12-0 victory over Bemidji State. Erickson agrees that she

and her teammates winning these awards is the result of how well they as a team are doing compared to other teams in the NSIC. “I think all of us getting Player or Pitcher of the Week is showing how well our team is doing in the conference,” Erickson said. The Mavericks left Duluth on Saturday with a series split against UMD, losing 4-5 in nine innings in game one before coming back in game two by shutting the Bulldogs out 6-0. In game one, MSU senior first baseman Chelsea Erickson hit her fourth home run of the season to tie the game up at two apiece in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. In the top of the ninth the Mavericks took their first lead when junior infielder Abby Sonner crushed a two-run

homer, her second of the season, to give the Mavericks a 4-2 lead. The Bulldogs then racked up four hits in the bottom half, producing the game-winning three runs to take the first game 5-4. In game two, the Mavericks dominated defensively and starting pitcher Courtney McKelvogue pitched a complete game, allowing only six hits while striking out four batters to pick up her second shutout win this season. The weekend was a memorable one that included a huge milestone, but it wasn’t a perfect one in Lindsay Erickson’s eyes. “This weekend went really well,” Erickson said. “Duluth took one from us, and we weren’t very happy with it. We started off 3-1 in the conference, and we will go from there.”

Quarterback carousel fallout: So who actually benefits?

REECE HEMMESCH

staff writer

After two weeks of continuous updated news stories involving team meetings and sports analysts projecting where he’ll go, the Peyton Manning sweepstakes is finally over, with the winner being the Denver Broncos. Manning made his decision over a week ago to take his talents to the Mile High City, choosing Denver over the Tennessee Titan and the San Francisco 49ers. Basically, all teams excluding the Patriots, Steelers, Packers, Saints and Giants showed interest in the four-time NFL MVP, but the decision was made to go to Denver above all, and the Broncos will be paying Manning $96 million over the next five years to throw the football. I know, I know, Manning is 35 years old and coming off major neck surgery, so why did the Broncos give him a five-year deal? Simple, they didn’t have a choice. A large portion of football fans out there agree when it comes to thinking that Manning maybe has two or three years left of top-of-the-line quarterbacking left in him before the aches and pains get so serious that he cannot play the game like he’s supposed to. But one person that does not think this is Peyton himself, who believes he still has a lot of tosses left in that arm. So teams could try to barter with him and make sure they get their money’s worth by only signing

him to a three-year deal, but that would end with him walking straight out the door. I’m sure the Broncos would love to take a couple years off that contract, but in order to keep Peyton happy, you give him the years he wants and the dollars he wants and hope to god he takes the bait. As for all of the Tim Tebow fans in the audience, I suggest you proceed through the next couple statements with caution. Honestly, it’s Peyton Manning. I don’t care that Tebow took a struggling team to the playoffs last season and was a true leader on the field. Again, I say it’s PEYTON MANNING. On a side note, I don’t care what John Elway said towards the end of last season in press conferences and anything else he said about Tebow, Elway did not like the kid as his franchise’s starting quarterback. Sure, Elway would give Tebow his permission to marry his daughter, but it doesn’t change the fact that Elway was a real quarterback who knows you need a real quarterback to win big football games. The Manning move was great for him because it gave him the chance to get rid of Tebow and get an actual under-center quarterback with an eye for the game. Tebow will now lead the charge in the Big Apple when he suits up with the Jets next season, a move that involves the Broncos giving up Tebow and a seventh-round pick in exchange for the Jets’ fourth and sixth rounder’s in the upcoming draft.

A prime example of Tebow’s exaggerated skills is right there in the trade. Wasn’t Tebow a first-round pick back in 2010? After only two years in the pros and after leading his team to the second round of the playoffs, all he is worth is two late draft picks? I thought Denver actually got a good deal out of this trade, considering no one but Jacksonville or Miami would give a decent amount up for the guy, but Tebow will join the Jets and will clash against New York’s struggling QB Mark Sanchez in a position battle for the starting spot in the upcoming season. After this past season’s collapse, the Jets were starting to ponder whether or not Sanchez could be their guy under center or if it was time to get somebody new. I don’t know if Tebow is their man, but New York thinks he will be getting into the game for around 20 plays per game next season, doing odd-ball jobs for the Jets such as being on the punt team to Web Photo set up fakes, taking over the Denver wideouts Eric Decker (left) and Demaryius Thomas (right) could be wildcat offense and probably celebrating in the end zone a lot next season with Peyton Manning taking going in the slot for trick plays over at quarterback.
