Comedy Central vet ‘Greek Week’ brings laughs to CSU hits campus Eliot Chang’s humor might not be for everyone, but the standup star’s show hit a high note at MSU.

Eliot Chang from Comedy Central packed a full house in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom Thursday for a dirty, cynical, sarcastic and self-deprecating bit that caused many to convulse with laughter or squirm with embarrassment in their seats. Chang got the crowd riled up through various acts involving college drinking, the economy, Asian stereotypes, coming out, and dating. He shared his sharp and biting opinions on veganism, a desire to be an “SBW” or Sassy Black Woman, wanting a majestic Japanese accent and racism. Chang sarcastically played the racism act as a stepping stone into what he is passionate about – disseminating respect for all cultural differences. He described common assumptions otherd have of Asians. One being, that if you are Asian, then you must know every Asian.

“There are like oceans between these countries,” Chang said. Chang’s comedy act continued with cynical points on texting and refraining from taking pictures of groups of women. He said he can’t take it when a girl asks to retake the picture. “You’re the same person, that’s you in that photo; nothing has changed in the one minute since then,” Chang said. Chang referred to a woman’s obsession with knowing their angles that ultimately make every picture appear similar and misleading. His act concluded with bits about parents, being a “BBG” or Big Black Guy, Italians and other stereotypes. Ironically, he finished his act with three dirty jokes he didn’t even try to submit to Comedy Central. They referred to molestation, adoption and texting. Following his comedy act, Chang got serious and shared some key points of his “Asians in the Media,” presentation, referring to all Asian Pacific

Islanders. “Who is Asian? Anyone from Asia,” Chang said is one of the most common questions he gets. “Life is not based on reality,” Chang said, “Life is based on the perception of reality.” He referenced this perception by the sway of popular media during Pearl Harbor and not covering the full story. “If you see an Asian face on TV, how is it portrayed?” Chang said. Rarely are they cool, they are portrayed as unappealing causing many Asians to deny their heritage. “I am ‘Asian American’ and I’m proud of it,” Chang said. The first part is how people identify you with what you look like. Arnold Schwarzenegger is known for his action niche in films, Lucy Lu is known for her beauty and sexual niche, however, black, white and Latino are still exploited. Asian women are portrayed as an

There weren’t any wizards roaming the halls, and professors weren’t taking to the PA lawn for broom flying lessons. Students didn’t parade around in robes or cast spells with magical wands. However, MSU’s Greek community spent the past week in a mortal version of the Harry Potter franchise’s Triwizard Tournament. The fictional tournament is a series of challenges involving competing schools in the Harry Potter universe and the basis for segments of Universal Studios’ popular “Wizarding World” theme park. Greek Week is the one time a year when all of the chapters on campus take part in a little friendly competition. The theme this year, “Magic in the Air,” had participants embracing their inner wizard. Each day during the week, the 11 chapters participating in the competition attended events with the goal to earn as many points as possible.

Starting on Monday night, Greek students took over the Bullpen to partake in a meet and greet. Each chapter was told to meet at least four different people. The event was new this year, and was pleasantly welcomed by those that attended. “Seeing the Greek community come together so easily really tells me what we’re all about. It’s about making lasting connections, whether they are inside or outside of your chapter,” said Taylor Bergstrom, a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. The matter of firsts continued into Tuesday when nominated chapter members took part in a “Wizard of the First Order” competition. Complete with mystical creature outfits, a laid-back interview and talent portion, contestants really got to show off their personalities. Phi Delta Theta president Vinson Williams took home the gold. A community favorite, the lip sync competition, also took

object of pleasure to all men, ironically all men but Asian men. Chang preferred early on in his career to be a part of a revolution, not an evolution. He told the audience that in college the strongest power you have is the power of choice. “You are what you choose to be,” Chang said, “I think being militant turns people off.” Chang advised students to study their history, even if they don’t speak the language or they are 1/32 Scandinavian, study it. You may find you con-

nect more with one side than the other. Chang gave tips to the audience for those who encounter being the pit of a racist joke. He said to pull them aside and talk to them, get involved, make your events fun and teach your legacy to your children to make it a “life-long thing.” Lastly, he strongly advised all to not skip class as it wastes your money. “To those of you who registered for 8 am classes,” Chang said, “you picked your schedule, stupid.”

It’s two weeks into April; the time of year when Minnesotans are desperately grasping for any sign that winter is finally over. It’s time to get outside, and Saturday is Minnesota’s trout fishing opener. There

are trout fishing opportunities within 20 minutes from Mankato: Seven Mile Creek just off of Highway 169, and three fully stocked trout ponds just outside of St. Peter on the Ottawa Road. On Saturday, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will stock the trout

ponds off of the Ottawa Road with 1,500 adult-size trout — the first of four stockings, with 1,500 the first two times and 1,000 the following two times. The Ottawa Road is just outside of St. Peter on Highway 99 East. Heading north on Highway 169, you’ll

Putting Veterans First Politicians need to be held accountable for the continued support of veterans.

web photo SAM WILMES

staff writer

While we are used to expecting little out of politicians, one thing we do expect our country’s representatives to do is take care of the defenders of the country- the ones who put their lives on the line so we can live as a free nation. On September 19, 2012,

the Veterans Jobs Act failed in the Senate due to the opposition of 40 Republican senators. The $1 billion bill would have put veterans back to work tending to the country’s federal lands and bolstering local police and fire departments. The cost would have been phased in over a 5-year period, and it is estimated that up to 20,000 veterans may have been

helped to find a job. The reasoning given behind the decision was that we did not have the funding to pay for it. This is an absolutely ridiculous assertion, especially because the bill is one tenth of one percent the cost of the 2 wars that cost more than 1.4 Trillion Dollars and the lives of more than 4,000 US servicemen. They even passed the Bush

tax cuts in 2002, further depleting the revenue brought in to finance the two wars we were fighting. While there was considerable resistance from the GOP in the name of fiscal sanity in 2012, there wasn’t much of an outcry following the 2001 Terrorist attacks -- only one GOP senator voted against the Iraq war in March of 2003. The obvious financial hypocrisy shown by the GOP senators is a mere footnote to the shocking personal betrayal of a group that is everywhere: from here at Minnesota State University, Mankato,. to the unemployment lines, to the top of the financial ladder, and everywhere in between. What is even more shocking is that of the 39 who ran for re-election, all were kept in office. Some who voted against it were even veterans such as John McCain, a Republican from Arizona. While veterans have traditionally been a reliable voting bloc for Republicans, maybe this should be read as a warning sign of where the GOP’s real loyalties lay.

“There are plenty of great TV shows out there, which one is your favorite?”

It is a real shame that while these GOP senators that vetoed this bill still have a job, and lifetime health insurance, the veterans who they are supposed to serve are homeless at an alarming rate. According to The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 13 percent of the homeless populations are veterans- people who may have turned to drinking to cope with the stress of PostTraumatic Stress Disorder, who may not be able to hold down a job, or an hour’s worth of sleep due to the stress they feel about their time in combat. No matter how you feel about the war, we as a nation have a duty to protect those who were ready to sacrifice everything for the nation they love, in the past and the present, even if we are in a financially obsolete position. There is nothing more important for a country to protect those who have protected us. For we have a duty to protect the most vulnerable among us, especially when they have given that same service to us.

place on Tuesday night. Brave souls took to the Ostrander stage, performing to a compilation of up-beat and catchy tunes. It was to no surprise that the popular Pitch Perfect songs made an appearance in almost all of the arrangements. Gamma Phi Beta caught the judge’s eyes with their unexpected light show, and dance moves. The sorority took home the win in this event. On Wednesday afternoon the community joined forces in a clothing drive and took over the CSU mall area. Their combined efforts brought in more than 5,000 items for the Salvation Army. A handful of chapters also competed in MSU’s very own Quidditch tournament. Lambda Chi Alpha won the event, a play on the popular franchise’s fictional sport. The final event had the highland pool making waves. For the second year in a row, chapters put their engineering skills to the test in a cardboard boat regatta. The rules were simple: construct a boat using nothing but duct tape and cardboard, and pray that you don’t flounder. Competition was stiff this year, with only two boats succumbing to the rampant waters. “Winning the regatta was an awesome experience, it was relieving to know the time and energy we put into our boat paid off,” said Drew Danforth, boat racer and member of Delta Chi, who ended up winning the event. Throughout the week, chapter members were told to keep a sharp eye out for a hidden “snitch,” a key component of the fictional sport of Quidditch Clues were delivered once a day, and by Wednesday night Sigma Chi had solved the puzzle, unearthing the snitch hiding under a plant in the library. The Greek Banquet capped off the week on Sunday night. The banquet recognized individuals and chapters on their accomplishments throughout the year, as well as announcing the Greek Week Champions. Sorority Sigma Sigma Sigma took home the award this year, downing fraternity Sigma Nu.

Consent Campaign supports awareness of sexual assault MEGAN KADLEC

editor in chief

“Get over it. He didn’t mean it. It’s fine. You’re making a big deal out of nothing.” These are just some of the comments Celia Hubbart, a senior studying Mass Media at Minnesota State University, Mankato, would hear about sexual assault and violence while at parties in the area. Enter The Consent Campaign, an awareness effort which seeks “to end rape culture on campus and solidify and emphasize what consent really is, so everyone can understand it,” according to Hubbart. Hubbart founded the program after looking into similar campaigns in other countries and noticing a problem on campus regarding rape culture and consent. Hubbart’s partner, Katarina Barrett, is the Violence, Awareness and Response Program (VARP) intern.

The campaign’s focal point is a photo campaign that is featured on the group’s Facebook page, The Consent CampaignMinnesota State University, Mankato. Here’s how it works: A whiteboard accompanies a table in the Centennial Student Union during the lunch hour. The whiteboard reads “Consent is important to me because,” inviting students to document their personal reasons. After an individual writes their reason, a picture is taken of them standing next to the board. Hubbart wants students to understand the problem of sexual assault and have the resources necessary to make a difference. Hubbart said that the Women’s Center and the VARP are extremely helpful with the campaign, giving them resources and pamphlets to hand out while tabling and allowing the group to join in with all events sponsored by the center.

FISHING “The trout at those ponds will bite on everything. Nightcrawlers, worms, spinners,” said Walt Hohn, owner of Walt’s Hook, Line and Sinker bait shop. continued from 3

turn right at Jake’s Stadium Pizza. Drive past Whiskey River for a mile, and when the road forks, veer left. There is a sign for the Ottawa Road; the trout ponds are roughly three miles from that point on the left-hand side. There’s a large wetland behind them. “The trout at those ponds will bite on everything, nightcrawlers, angle worms, spinners,” said Walt Hohn, owner of Walt’s Hook, Line, and Sinker bait shop, located on the Ottawa Road halfway towards the trout ponds. “[The trout] are farm raised, so there is not a whole lot to it. You want to use fourpound test fishing line, the lighter the better, and [small] sunfish hooks.” There is a trick to catching trout. The fish have small mouths and throats, so the larger the bait used, the harder it is to hook them, making hooking one on the first pass a difficult proposition. Try waiting until the bobber dips for a second or third time before setting the hook. At Seven Mile Creek, the DNR stocks tiny “fingerling” trout far upstream where the fish will live out a natural existence. “The trout at Seven Mile Creek are more wild and a lot harder to catch, very few people have luck,” said Hohn. “The people that fish those trout are more of the ‘purist’ type. They’ll hike upstream with their fly rods and try to get the trout of their hiding spots. It’s mostly catch-andrelease.” The limit for trout is five. In addition to a fishing license, Minnesota requires the purchase of a “trout stamp” for $10. A resident fishing license is $22, and $45 for nonresidents. Trout are the simplest fish to clean too. Don’t worry about filleting the fish, just cut the head off and remove the guts. Once the insides are out, rinse the fish off and it’s ready to cook. More information on fishing regulations and license information can be found at www.mndnr.gov.

CONSENT “We want to get people involved and have them ask questions that maybe they didn’t feel comfortable asking before, or just [kind of] getting them to think about it a different way,” Hubbart said. continued from 5 gram at MSU. Hubbart said that the presentation will be followed by an open discussion. “We want to get people involved and have them ask questions that maybe they didn’t feel comfortable asking before, or just [kind of] getting them to think about things in a different way,” Hubbart said. The campaign has been successful so far, receiving many positive reactions throughout the community. Hubbart said that she was surprised about the positive reactions she received from males on campus, citing her favorite response from a man who said that “sex shouldn’t be scary for anyone.” “I thought that was really nice. He was completely genuine about it,” Hubbart said. “He knew right away what he

wanted to say, so it seemed like it was an important topic to him. He was really proud of it as well.” Hubbart emphasized the importance of consent as a topic that affects everyone, not just women. Hubbart said that anyone can be raped, and that anyone can combat rape culture, regardless of gender. There have been several individuals who believe that the campaign is attacking them personally by calling them rapists. “I think with the Steubenville rape case as well, that has been going on, or went on, people, especially athletes, felt that me pushing The Consent Campaign was probably putting them in a box, and they probably felt attacked. That’s what I’m assuming it is,” Hub-

bart said. Hubbart argues that she doesn’t think anyone is inherently a rapist. She said that often times, individuals haven’t been taught what constitutes rape or consent, and many problems result from simply not knowing. “If I don’t give consent to something, if I don’t want you to touch me or be around me, then you should respect that,” Hubbart said. “I’ve noticed a lot of lack of respect and I think people didn’t quite understand that they were crossing a line.” Hubbart said that the most negative reactions came on her personal Facebook page. She said that various individuals have made comments about how rape culture doesn’t exist, the worst being one of her

supposed friends saying that sexual assault in their apartment isn’t reported, it’s graded. “I was really surprised by the backlash, actually,” Hubbart said. “I don’t know if Kat’s experienced any, but apparently I have misogynist friends.” Kat, Hubbart’s partner, is a social work major, so the campaign fits well with what she wants to do after college. Though Hubbart is graduating this summer, she hopes the campaign will continue after her departure from MSU. Once she graduates, she hopes to continue her feminist work, joking that she wants to become a professional activist. Hubbart would like to urge all students who would like to become involved with the campaign to send a message via the group’s Facebook page.

Mavericks back to winning ways with four-game sweep over Augustana The rain was bad and the wind was worse, but MSU and Augustana still had four games of baseball to be played over the weekend. They would get them all in and the Mavs would be victorious in all four REECE HEMMESCH

sports editor

After a six-game skid which only yielded three victories, the Minnesota State University, Mankato baseball team returned to their natural form over the weekend, taking the series over NSIC-rival Augustana in a fourgame sweep. It was rainy and windy all weekend at the MSU Baseball Complex where the original plan was for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, but the weather would not cooperate as the two teams instead played one on Saturday, two on Sunday and ended the series yesterday with one final game. The Mavericks and Vikings began Saturday afternoon after a series of rain delays pushed back the game further and further. It would finally be played, and MSU raced to a 10-2 win over the Vikings. Senior Harvey Martin took the mound for MSU in game one, he would be the only pitcher they would use, going

the distance while letting up two runs on five hits and striking out 11 to improve his record to 4-0 on the season. The game was quiet for the first three innings of a seveninning tilt before Augie’s Jake Petersen broke the nothingnothing tie with a solo home run to left field. MSU would answer back in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot of their own, coming off the bat of Connor McCallum, for his team-leading fifth homer of the season. The Mavs would add two more in that inning and five more in the fifth, coming from back-to-back RBI singles from McCallum and sophomore Nolan Johnson and a three-run homerun from junior Stetson Olson, to put MSU up 8-1 and the game out of reach. Peterson would go onto hit another solo shot in the sixth inning to make it 8-2 but theMaverick lead would be too much as MSU put up two more insurance runs in the sixth to give them

The Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks claimed five of six Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games this past week. MSU softball improved their overall record to 25-7, 10-2 in the NSIC. After losing their first bout against Southwest Minnesota State University, MSU then won the next before two consecutive sweeps over Northern State University and Minnesota State University, Moorhead. Senior Courtney McKelvogue started Tuesday against SMSU in game one. McKelogue went five innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, sending seven down on strikes. Senior Jenna Peterson earned the 8-7 loss for MSU in her 1.2 innings of work.

Peterson allowed five runs on four hits, while striking out two and walking one. MSU struck first in the second inning off of a SMSU error. SMSU fired back twice in the second inning on two MSU errors. Junior Anna Cole batted in the first RBIs of the game with her two-run single in the third inning, then Peterson added a RBI double, making the score 5-2 at the end of the third inning. SMSU went on a power streak in the sixth and seventh inning. Amy Dreessen sent a solo shot to left center in the sixth inning. Emily Olson cracked a onerun shot to center field with one out in the seventh. Then, with two outs, bases loaded and down 7-4, Dreessen launched her second home run of the game, giving SMSU the walk-off win over MSU 8-7.

Sophomore Brittany Lauterbach threw a complete game for MSU, earning the win while allowing one run on five hits and recording seven strikeouts. Lauterbach improved her overall record to 5-1. The second stint was MSU’s from the start, scoring four runs on three hits in the first inning. Junior Lindsay Erickson notched a two-run blast in the second inning, pushing MSU’s lead to 6-0. MSU added one run in the fifth and sixth inning before SMSU tallied one to extend the game to the seventh inning. Offensively, MSU was led by Erickson, who tallied two runs on two hits and three RBIs, as well as junior Abby Sonner who scored one run and recorded two RBIs. MSU recorded two wins

Friday against Northern State University, shutting out NSU in both games, tallying three runs in the first game and eight in the second match. McKelvogue earned the win for MSU with her 6.2 innings of work while allowing five hits, three walks and striking out three. McKelvogue improved her overall record to 12-4 despite Lauterbach relieving her for the last out of the game. Senior Lauryn Morris forced NSU to throw her out at second base in the third inning, allowing freshman Tatum Klein to score. MSU added two more in the sixth inning off of junior Samantha Hollen’s RBI double and again off of Cole’s RBI single, scoring Hollen. The second game was all MSU, scoring five runs in the first inning alone. Lauterbach went all five

innings in the circle for MSU. Earning the win, Lauterbach allowed two hits and walked one batter but sent down four batters on strikes. Lauterbach improved her season record to 6-1. Erickson and Hollen both cracked RBI singles in the first before junior Kelly Wood sent a three-run bomb. Hollen added another run with her RBI double in the third inning. Cole then produced a RBI single before scoring on a passed ball later in the inning. MSU’s dominant 8-0 victory was led by Hollen, who scored two runs and earned two RBIs on two hits, as well as six putouts in the field, Cole who crossed home twice and added two hits and one RBI, and Wood who added three RBIs with one hit.

their final lead of the day. Johnson would end the day 4-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead MSU offensively. McCallum would finish 2-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored and Olson was 2-3 with five RBIs of his own. Sunday brought a doubleheader to the table and the games would end a little closer than Saturdays tilt. The Augie dugout was shaking for game one of the Sunday doubleheader when they realized junior Jason Hoppe would take the mound for the first game They were still trembling from Hoppe’s dazzling performance last May, when he struck out 17 Viking batters in MSU’s win. The strikeout total wouldn’t be as high this time, but Hoppe would go six innings, striking out five and giving up one run. The Mavs clung to a 3-1 lead heading into the seventh inning when Hoppe was replaced by

junior reliever Chris Williams. Williams would let in one run off a double in the seventh, before being relieved midway through the eighth by senior Mahlon Zimmermann. Zimmerman came in with two on and no out in the eighth inning of the 3-2 game, where MSU would sacrifice a double play for the tying run, knotting things up at three. MSU would fire right back in the eighth with the game-winning run off a go-ahead walk from Augie hurler Chad Becker, scoring Lucas Skjefte and giving the Mavs the lead heading into the ninth. Zimmermann would close the door in the ninth as MSU took game two of the series 4-3. Game three was a game of two halves as MSU obtained six runs through the first five innings, while the Vikings waited until late to get their run production. It would be close but the Mavericks would walk out of the

shannon rathmanner • msu reporter Senior outfielder Lauren Morris was impressive over the last week of MSU’s games. She currently holds a .301 batting average with five doubles and 10 stolen bases.

MSU Mankato finished their weekend on the right foot, scoring 16 runs while only allowing one in two NSIC games against MSU Moorhead Saturday. McKelvogue took the circle for MSU Mankato in game one, throwing all five innings, allowing one hit, one walk and

striking out four batters. McKelvogue improved her season record to 13-4. MSU started their shutout performance in the second inning with Wood and junior Eryn Edgerton slapping RBI singles. In the fourth inning, Cole smashed a three-run bomb

park Sunday with a 6-4 win. Skjefte would lead MSU hitters in game three with two hits and three RBIs. Junior Parker Sullivan would also tally two hits of his own and Johnson and junior Todd Standish would each double in the victory. Junior TJ Larson would register his fourth victory of the season for the Mavericks, going five-and-a-third, letting up three runs and striking out six. Junior Bryce Bellin would go the final two outs in the sixth and Zimmermann came on in the seventh for his sixth save of the year. Monday was decision day for both teams, whether the series would end in a sweep or threeout-of-four was completely up to them. It appeared early that MSU would get a clear sweep of Augustana with Johnson doubling in the first to bring in McCallum to make it 1-0. Olson would follow that up the next inning with a monstrous making the score 5-0. Once again, in the fifth inning MSU scored, first off of Sonner’s two-run shot then on Cole’s RBI single, attaining the victory for MSU Mankato 8-0. Cole contributed two runs, three hits and four RBIs while Sonner scored one run and provided one hit and two RBIs let MSU to victory. Lauterbach went the distance in game two, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while punching out three, improving her overall record to 7-1. MSU Moorhead struck on Brittany York’s RBI single to center field in the top of the first. MSU Mankato answered back a monster second half of the first inning, scoring five runs on six hits. Hollen, Wood, freshman Emily Bransky and Klein all tagged RBI singles in the first inning. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Hollen sent a two-run shot, bringing the score to 7-1 before Bransky knocked in another RBI. Hollen who scored two runs, two RBIs and had two hits, as well as Bransky who knocked in two RBIs and earned one hit, led MSU to their 8-1 victory. MSU played against SMSU in Marshall, Minn. and played NSU and MSU Moorhead on Gustavus Adolphus’ football field. MSU steps back on the field Wednesday when they travel to Fayette, Iowa to take on NSIC opponent Upper Iowa University. UIU currently holds a 16-12 record, 3-5 in the NSIC.

homerun to right field which landed somewhere on the other side of the Gage parking lot, putting MSU up 2-0. The see-saw affect would be in place for the remainder of the game as Augie answered with two in the fifth, followed by MSU answering back with three in the bottom half of the inning, followed by the Vikings tying it up once again in the seventh with three more of their own, joining the two teams at a 5-all tie heading into the bottom of the seventh, where MSU took over. It begun with junior Mike Andries, whose two-RBI double with the bases loaded lifted MSU to a 7-5 lead. Skjefte and Sullivan followed that up with RBI singles of their own and MSU clung to a 9-5 lead heading into the eighth, but they would still not be done.

The Mavs went off for six runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning thanks to twoRBI singles from Andries and Sullivan. When the dust settled, the second out of the inning was recorded but MSU obtained their 15th run, ending the game early due to the mercy rule and sending Augustana back to Sioux Falls with four losses under their belt. With the victories, MSU’s record now rests at a 22-7 mark and 11-3 in the NSIC. MSU will next be in action tomorrow for a midweek doubleheader with Upper Iowa at the MSU Baseball Complex beginning at 1:30 p.m. From there they will host Southwest Minnesota State for a doubleheader Saturday before heading to Marshall Sunday to complete the series with the Mustangs.

Battle of the ‘Evil Dead’ Reviews James Schuyler Houtsma versus Andrew Simon

HOUTSMA -

Horror remakes may as well be the spawn of Beelzebub and should be killed by fire. At least that’s normally the reaction you’d get out of me when asked about the subject. With only a few middling examples to the contrary, the whole exercise in unoriginality and easy returns has long since run its course. However, none of this matters because once in a blue moon a movie like Evil Dead will come along and prove to be just as twisted and entertaining as any horror movie, enough so to step out of its predecessor’s shadow. In an attempt to intervene against her heroin problem, Mia (Jane Levy) is taken by her estranged brother and a group of old friends to their family cabin in the woods to hash it out. After discovering animal corpses and a seriously safeguarded book from what appeared to be some sort of ritual in the basement, the perceived “smart one” of the group ignores every natural instinct ever and starts reading from the book, which subtly states in giant red ink “DON’T READ IT. DON’T SPEAK IT.” Naturally this unleashes an infectious demon that starts

several times throughout and yet it’s the type of movie you watch with a big sadistic grin on your face. Horror remakes and usually modern horror in general doesn’t work but that’s because they’re doing it wrong. Evil Dead does it right. 7.5/10

possessing and mutilating the group, one-by-one. Who will make it until dawn and more importantly, what will be left of them? Evil Dead acts incredibly similar to a roller coaster/thrill ride: it builds up the tension to an unbearable point, then starts releasing it, over and over, and just when you think it’s topped itself in how intense it can be, it takes it a step further. Those with weak stomachs should also note the very real possibility of puking. In an age of desperate jump scares and ineffective CG gore, Evil Dead balks in other horror movies’ faces. To see a movie take the time to build the creepy, foreboding atmosphere of the setting first before diving in makes you realize how much it has been ignored as of recently and even more so how necessary it is. But once it dives in, prepare your nerves (and your bowels). Awful as it is, the gore in this movie is phenomenal and nearly all done with practical effects, no less. To borrow from Blu-Ray’s catalogue of quotes, compared to digital, the difference is night and day. Only now the comparison is how effective facial mutilation looks, which, believe me, looks like it hurts.

• web photo

Practical gore is a great way to harken back to the days of old but a slightly less awesome way of doing it is having similar characterization. True to the most clichéd horror movies, the characters here aren’t treated as anything more than lambs for the slaughter, ready to be slowly dispatched in the most gruesome of ways at a moment’s notice. They are not all that sympathetic and sometimes even annoying. Some backstory is attempted for the brother and sister duo, if only halfheartedly enough to realize it’s not important. Jane Levy is most effective as one of the possessed, which puts her other moments to shame. The ultimate hero left standing (almost intact) at the end of the movie leaves much to be desired. The final 15 minutes are disappointingly forced and the lack of a strong character to root for takes away some of the goodwill left by what came before. Maybe the shadow of Bruce Campbell is too much to handle. Even if Evil Dead doesn’t update the things it probably should, it doesn’t impede how effective the things that work are. The buildup is great, the payoff is better. It’s difficult not to squirm

It’s with heavy hesitancy that one approaches the remake of Sam Raimi’s horror classic The Evil Dead, the film made on a shoestring budget, garnered a rave cult following, and ushered in the stardom of director Raimi and lead star Bruce Campbell. Like Citizen Kane and other such cherished films, the idea of remaking it was blasphemeous and barbaric. Against all odds, this remake, dropping ‘the’ from the title for a more direct effect, Evil Dead is phenomenal. Staying true to the premise of the original and frequently paying homage, boasting gratuitous gore that would make Quentin Tarantino blush, and featuring intelligent characters confronting and fighting the ultimate evil in a small cabin in the woods, Evil Dead is engrossing in all the right ways. Helming this straight-up horror fest is first-time director Fede Alvarez, and he does an absolutely superb job. In the wrong hands, horror movies can end up as atrocious as When a Stranger Calls, lacking in anything resembles thrills or chills, Evil Dead has all of this in spades. Directing with the intricacy of Dario Agento (Suspiria), the shot tilts of Sam Raimi, and the intensity of Rob Zombie (Halloween), Alvarez makes every second thrilling. Co-written with Diablo Cody and Rodo Sayagues, Alvarez and company construct characters that, although they have their fatal flaws, act rationally and actually use their noggins – a rarity in the horror field. As a happy consequence, all of these characters are

immensely likable, and their doomed fates aren’t met with applause as per your standard Friday the 13th, but with distaste at seeing a character we’ve come to know perish. There’s logic behind why these characters are at this cabin, why they refuse to leave, why they act the way they do, and although it’s a small thing, tiny details like that make all the difference between an interesting film, and a bad film. This is five characters confronted with pure, unrelenting evil that toys with them, mocks them, abuses them, mutilates them, and obliterates all hope. It’s a dark movie, but thanks to bits of comedy, no doubt thanks to co-writer Cody (of Juno fame), there are enough moments of breather between each sequence of genuine horror. As the bodies fall and we’re left with the affectionatelycalled Final Girl, a feeling was sparked that had been absent for years watching horror movies, that feeling of fear, of not knowing what’s going to happen next, of not knowing if the Final Girl will make it out alive because, boy, these demons refuse to fail. Those final 15 minutes of Evil Dead become exhilarating, and for that feeling alone, this film is extraordinary and rare amongst the horror field. Forget saying “if you’re going to remake a horror movie, this is how you do it.” Instead, look at Evil Dead as a model for how to make a great horror movie, period. Everything necessary is there. Take or leave the gore, that’s primarily for the horror hounds, but the attention to character, and even doing something as small as making characters intelligent and sympathetic – which is bewilderingly groundbreaking in this genre – goes a long way into making a story work. Defying all odds, Evil Dead was marvelous, and like all good movies, lingers in the mind long after seeing it, demanding a sequel. Now.
