Mankato Tourtellotte Pool initiates new swimming tests Mankato Family YMCA enforces new rules to increase safety in youth members

MARIA LY NEWS EDITOR The Mankato Family YMCA is adding safety measures to their swimming pool this summer as swimmers under the age of 18 must perform a test to determine their swimming abilities. The new safety test will begin in the YMCA’s new Tourtellotte pool set to open Thursday, June 6. The Tourtellotte Pool according to the City of Mankato’s recreation page is “an outdoor, lifeguardstaffed, swimming facility featuring an Olympic-sized pool with separate diving well

and a heated wading pool.” As of now, it is the only public outdoor pool with over 1,000 people attending the first two days of last year’s opening.

After the swimmers complete the test, they will be assigned certain areas of the pool they will be allowed to use. Luckily, the test will

only have to be completed once as lifeguards track down the results of each youth member. To keep track of which

area each youth member is assigned too, the pool has been broken down into colors in which the member has a wristband corresponding with that color given to them each visit. These new rules will increase safety amongst youth members while also helping lifeguards help keep track and watch over the pool. Tests differ depending on which side of the pool the youth member is looking to gain access to. Tests in the deeper sections of the pool include swimming for 30 meters without stopping, doing a deep plunge and a 30 second treading of water. After success of completion, the member will get a blue

dollars. The new reconstruction may cut out access to certain businesses during hours, but residents will still be able to access all businesses for most of the time. The project will be paid using federal grant money of 1.2 million dollars, 1.4 million in various state funding sources, 700,000 dollars in local funds, and about 426,000 dollars in 25 local nearby businesses. The following are goals of the new Commerce Drive Area Development Plan: First, recognize Commerce Drive as a primary business district in the community and a place for businesses to succeed.
