Summer programs offered for MSU students and faculty Student Activities has planned five events to keep students busy this summer.

ALISSA THIELGES News Editor The Student Event’s Team is kicking off summer in style with a variety of programs for students and faculty to participate in throughout the summer months. They include a bike ride, sports events, an outdoor movie, and even a tasty BBQ sampling. “This is an opportunity for [students] to continue to be engaged throughout the summer,” said Bill Tourville, assistant director of Campus Programs. “Students go to class in the summer, they are still here, and we want to provide some things for them. That’s our responsibility.” The first event kicks off Wednesday at 3 p.m. with the Dam Bike Ride. The 24-mile loop will begin at the Centennial Student Union and ride to the water dam in Rapidan, Minnesota where

(CC BY-NC-ND 2.0) by guernseysports people can make a pit stop for some delicious pie before heading back. The group will be following the Red Jacket Trail. The trip will take about two and a half hours to complete, said Tourville. This program is an annual event and usually has a group of 20 to 25 people ride together each year. Three of the assistant directors of Student Activities will be joining the ride this year.

The next event will be an MNSU Night at the Mankato MoonDogs June 15 at 7:05 p.m. Thanks to the MoonDogs, MNSU students will be able to purchase a discounted ticket package for $10, which will include a reserved seat, a meal deal— hotdog, chips, and a drink— and a MoonDogs baseball cap. This is a new event that people have been asking

about for a few years, and Tourville said that it’s nice that MNSU and the MoonDogs were able to work together to make it happen. Tickets can be purchased in advanced at mnsuevents. com or at the event with a valid MavCARD. Students can purchase up to 5 tickets to give to family and friends. On Thursday, June 22, the film “Beauty and the Beast” will be playing in the outdoor

amphitheater. The movie will start at approximately 9 p.m., or when it is dark enough to play. The outdoor movies have been a popular event and always has a good turn out, said Tourville. Last year’s showing of Zootopia was attended by 450 people. It is suggested to come early to snag a good spot. People are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to sit on. Cool ways to stay active during hot summer days

MARJAN HUSSEIN Staff Writer The summer season is basically here meaning that it is time to break out the summer dresses, shorts and sunglasses. The summer atmosphere is quite lovely with breathtaking sunsets, longer daylight hours and warm weather. However, the intense heat during the day could be a major

discouragement, causing one to feel lazy and just want to stay indoors. This should not be the case as there are several activities one can indulge in that aid an active lifestyle and break the monotony of the summer heat. One ideal way to stay active in the summer and beat the heat is to have a great exercise routine planned out. The summer heat should not act as a good excuse to shun healthy habits. Exercising early in the morning around dawn and later around dusk offer the most suitable conditions to get a great workout in

during the summer. It is also best to do heavy workouts indoors as one can lose a lot of water under the sun when your body tries to naturally cool itself by sweating. Walks at the at the end of the day are also conducive in terms of mental and physical health as one is able to clear and reset their mind after going through a lengthy day. Another way to stay active in the summer is to cool off in the water. Swimming is an excellent way to relax, socialize and stay healthy and can be a complete workout. There are also numerous activities that revolve around the water. Beach parties,

pool parties, cookouts, and bonfires are amongst several other activities that can take place by the water, which gives people the opportunity to socialize and make new friends, thus expanding their personal networks. Channeling one’s inner child and making it game time is also another superb way to stay active in the summer. The logic here is to reenact the same games one played as a child with family, relatives and friends. Games such as hop scotch, hula hooping, jumping rope, tag and many others are a great way to keep busy. Partaking in different sports

such as soccer, basketball, kickball or tennis is also another awesome way to not only get in shape, but also to stay active during the summer season. Games help strengthen the bonds between people and are a classic way to spend quality time with loved ones. Traveling and exploring the great outdoors is another great way one can stay active during the summer. The summer offers comfortable
