It’s a Minnesota tradition like no other

A perspective of the State Fair from a lifelong Minnesotan LUKE LARSON Staff Writer The Brazilians have Carnaval. The Chinese have the Chinese New Year. The Germans have Oktoberfest. The Minnesotans… we have the Minnesota State Fair. The annual twelve-day festival of food, entertainment, art, agriculture, and everything else Minnesotan – known to every Minnesotan as simply “the fair” – is our state holiday. In a land known for winter, it is a celebration of summer. It is an experience like no other that gathers together all the citizens of our proud state, be they from the Cities, up north, or here in the Minnesota River Valley. I even suspect that there be many a visitor from the dark side who cross the St. Croix River to enjoy our unique spectacle. Where else can you enjoy a deep fried candy bar on a stick, alligator nuggets, and a Pronto Pup all in the space of an hour? (Considering the lines, an hour might be a bit optimistic, but my point is still valid.) Attractions like “the giant slide,” “the milk stand,” and “Sweet Martha’s Cookies” are common experiences shared by Minnesotans from every corner of the state. Apart from the food and attractions, the fair serves as a sort of state Olympics for arts, crafts, and agriculture. Those who did best at each of our county fairs earn the coveted “state fair trip” for their paintings, cows, carvings, robots, or whatever it may be. When you visit the exhibits, you are seeing some of the best work Minnesotans

bike ride away from the fairgrounds. The fair was also a little bittersweet as a kid, because it signaled the end of summer vacation. School never began until the fair was done. My memories of the fair are numerous. I had a great experience working minimum wage for two fairs as a ticket taker at Gate 0. As a fundraiser for Boy Scouts, I helped park cars in the parking lot of Holy Childhood Catholic Church, just a few blocks off the Snelling and Midway entrance. Both sides of my family have a strong agricultural background, so visiting cousins showing cows and horses has always been a part of the fair experience for me. Last year, in fact, my cousin was one of the finalists for the Princess Kay of the Milky Way competition and had her head immortalized as a butter sculpture. I almost feel a little famous just being able to say that my cousin was one of the butter heads! My family’s history with the fair goes back many generations. I remember having been told by family on a number of occasions that some of

New Bob Dylan mural is knockin’ on Minneapolis’ door MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A team of artists is working on a giant mural featuring a portrait of musician Bob Dylan on a building in downtown Minneapolis. On Wednesday, the artists began painting the 60foot tall, 150-wide portrait of Dylan, who originally hailed from Duluth and once owned the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, the Star Tribune (http://strib.mn/1EjlJKI ) reports. The kaleidoscopic portrait will fill a whitewashed wall at the corner of Fifth Street and Hennepin Avenue. Commissioned by the building’s owner, Goldman Sachs, the mural is part of Hennepin Theatre Trust’s effort to help revitalize downtown Minneapolis with a Cultural District. “We want Minneapolis to be a 24-hour city,” said Joan Vorderbruggen, arts coordinator for the district. “Arts and culture should be a part of every step you take.” The $50,000 project is be-

ing planned by Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra, who has left his mark on facades across three continents, including a mural of rappers Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. in Miami and one of Nobel Peace laureate Malala Yousafzai in Rome. This will be his largest project outside of Brazil. Kobra’s team of five artists, three from Brazil and two from Minnesota, will use boom lifts and air compressors as they work on the mural over the next two weeks. Kobra wants to keep the design a surprise, but he welcomes people who want to witness the creative process. He envisions a triptych of Dylan, with three black and white images of the musician over different periods of his long career. The mural will include lyrics from Dylan’s song “The Times They Are A-Changin’.”

Conjoined twin girls given a chance at life AURORA, Colo. (AP) — A woman preparing to give birth to conjoined twins in Colorado said she wants to see her two babies before they are separated after she was told one of the babies won’t survive. Amber McCullough, of Hastings, Minn., was scheduled to deliver twin girls at the Colorado Fetal Care Center at Children’s Hospital Colorado by C-section on Wednesday. Hospital officials said Wednesday they had no update on the surgery. Hannah and Olivia share an abdomen, liver and intestinal tract. The girls have separate hearts and kidneys. McCullough told KUSA-TV Olivia is not expected to survive because of her heart. She only has a single ventricle and is missing valves.

Doctors said it could take up to 12 hours to separate the twins. Conjoined twins happen once every 200,000 live births, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, which says between 40 to 60 percent arrive stillborn. She became pregnant with her girls during another relationship, and it wasn’t until her second trimester when she learned she was carrying conjoined twins. The relationship with the girl’s dad ended shortly thereafter. McCullough’s friends organized a “prayer shower” for her before she moved. They also gave her keepsakes that honor both babies’ lives. McCullough told KUSA-TV she wants to give her daughters a chance at life.

An article by Daniel Lefferts for Bustle. com ranks the top ten in order from best to least, and we come out on top. That’s all fine and good, but we already knew we were the best all along. According to the official Minnesota State Fair web-

site, the fair has drawn well over 1.5 million people each year for the past three years, reaching daily totals as high as 250,000. To anyone who has experienced the endless sea of people that floods the fairgrounds, this comes as no surprise. Ours is the second-most attended state fair in the country, behind only Texas, according to the New York Post. Although it isn’t quite fair (pun intended), con-

sidering that the Texas State Fair runs for about a week and a half longer than ours. The fair begins today and runs through Labor Day, September 7th. If you’re new to the state and have never had the classic Minnesota experience that is the state fair I highly recommend it. You will not regret it. Unless you eat too many Pronto Pups, so don’t do that.

NICOLE SCHMIDT News Editor I’ll be the first to admit it; I am not the most tech-savvy person out there. While I am not totally clueless, I do have trouble translating the jargon of technology into words that make sense to me, such as “the chord that looks like it could fit into a telephone jack,” or “the green blinking light.” That being said, when I was presented with the task of setting up a router in my apartment (yes, I know what a router is), I had a feeling from the get-go that I was horribly doomed. However difficult (or not so difficult) the task, I still took it upon myself to try. So naturally, I now have an unplugged $100 router sitting in my entertainment center and a Wi-Fi-free apartment. As a student at Minnesota State University, Mankato and Summit Apartments resident, I shook off this minor downfall, telling myself

michellgroup.com there are places a-plenty to get free Wi-Fi until the router was installed properly, be it the Centennial Student Union (CSU), Summit’s computer lab, or even places that offer free Wi-Fi such as Caribou Coffee. Yet as the days dragged on, I found myself crippled as a student, employee, and young adult to complete my daily tasks. Homework was harder to get done and communicating with coworkers, teachers, and peers was made more difficult without the ease of Internet at my fingertips. Not only was I struggling to send out pertinent information, but I also found myself pining to watch an episode or movie from Netflix before I went to bed.

Pulse

This instance has verified what I have pondered before: we put a tremendous weight on the crutch of Internet and technology in our lives. As I sit here writing this article from a campus computer, I can’t help but wonder about technology. Technology offers a range of benefits such as instant communication, endless entertainment, and connection to friends. It offers an endless supply of information and opinions (be it good or bad), as well as ways to continually stay in touch with people throughout the day. Yet as we become more and more technically inclined, I can’t but feel like we are becoming a little bit too reliant on the ‘all-knowing’

Web. Think about it: there used to be a time when students attended class with nothing more than a pencil and notebook. The teacher taught the course with no slides, assigned work and tests that they wrote themselves. Students were expected to go to the library for research and resources. Today as a junior in college, I have checked only one book in my career, and I find that quite sad. Instead of that, we now get less and less hard-copy syllabi and get sent to our computers as opposed to our desk to get homework done. So what’s the point, you

Who will trump the 2016 election? A student’s thoughts on next year’s presidential race.

WESLEY HUNTINGTON Staff Writer The presidential race has officially begun. The candidate lists of both the Democrat Party and Republican Party have started campaign rallies and the Republicans have done a televised debate. Just a disclaimer, I do respect all political views. I would like to assure all readers that I am not going to show favoritism to a particular candidate, nor any particular political party. I want to inform you who I think is the best candidate from the two

major political parties and who is not. This is so you can probably make an informed decision in 2016 for who you want for the next President of the United States. Let me point out that I’m a centrist Libertarian by most stretches of the imagination. That means that while I abide by the philosophy of protecting our personal liberties and freedoms, there are certain things I would like the government to take care of, such as matters of public health. That’s why I agree that most states should allow mandatory vaccinations for all children regardless of how the parents personally feel. However, that’s just my

would wish to have a discussion with me about my views, I will certainly try to make myself available to do so.

As mentioned before the first GOP presidential debate happened early in August, while and the Democrats don’t start theirs until October. In the Republican debate, I, along with others, felt that was Donald Trump did the best. Trump’s platform is based on most of the social issues that have been a contention point in our great nation for years, most notably illegal immigration. The need to build a wall is one solution he offers on occasion when someone asks for his solution to this problem. I have been intrigued by what Trump has done since he announced his candidacy back on June 16. There is a lot of truth to what he has said. To me, the reason why he is beating the other 16 Republican candidates in the field is that he is telling his supporters the issues flatout and blatant, which I feel is something the other candidates are either unwilling or afraid to do for fear of losing

voters. If Trump wins the Republican nomination, I will gladly throw my support for him; but if I had to choose a runner-up from the Republican side of the Presidential race, it would have to the firstterm senator from Kentucky, Rand Paul. Paul was the one who initiated a filibuster in the Senate when the Patriot Act was due for re-certification, and he was the one who wanted the National Security Agency (NSA) phone records

of every American thrown out and never used again in the Patriot Act. So, Paul would be a good choice for President, while the person I think needs to get out is Jeb Bush, the brother of George W. Bush and son of George H.W. Bush. Having a third Bush in the White House would not be favorable, but that’s my opinion on that. On the Democrat side, Hillary Clinton is the front-runner for it, yet I do not want her for president. Her email scandal coupled with her not sending aid to U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and his aides while in Benghazi in 2012 just sends the wrong message. The smart money would be on Bernie Sanders, the incumbent Senator from Vermont, who sends a different kind of message compared to Clinton, and he seems to be gaining in the polls. So no matter your political view, keep up with the presidential races in both parties. Eventually one person on both sides will emerge, and you will have to decide on Nov. 8, 2016 who will be the 45th President of the United States. Either way, you can be guaranteed they will try to distance themselves from Barack Obama.

Minnesota State Fair on a stick

A student’s thoughts on her first trip to the Minnesota State Fair.

YUSEONG JEON Staff Writer State Fair season is here once again! Most students from Minnesota have probably been to the fair, while those from different states or countries might not have had a chance to experience it yet. As an international student, I didn’t know what exactly the state fair was until I went there for the first time last summer. A few days before the new semester started a year ago, the MNSU Kearney International Center lent a bus for students who want to go to the Minnesota

Photos by Yuseong Jeon State Fair. As far as I remember, because of the free bus

tour to the fair, many students hopped on the bus to attend the fair. The Minnesota State Fair was quite eye-opening. Before I arrived there, I had imagined there would be some food and maybe historical sightseeing of Minnesota, but it looked more like a big amusement park. I was taken back to my childhood for a moment as I craned my neck to look around the fair. From the entrance of the fair, I could feel the exhilarating atmosphere coming out of the enormous crowd. At lunchtime, my friends and I went straight to the food stands. The variety of foods was amazingly diverse. I had assumed there would only be typical American foods, but foods from literally all over the world were available. My intention was to try one or two food booths, but I ended up trying more than five within two hours. Although the food was great, it was very expensive.

I thought the price would be quite reasonable because of the separate entrance fee. Eventually, I ran out of cash so I could not afford any more food. Similarly, the rides were also quite expensive. I thought it was more expensive than real amusement parks. The fair’s excessive prices really bummed me out. I can say, however, that

the state fair was a very fun experience in all. If you are looking for a lively atmosphere to spend a nice time with your family and friends, the Minnesota State Fair is a great choice. Even though I could not try as many rides or different foods as I hoped to, I do not regret my experience at all. I had a lot of fun with my friends away from my busy schedule for a day. I highly recommend going to this year’s Minnesota State Fair, especially to students who have never been before. Although MNSU is not providing a bus to shuttle students to the fair this year, the Land to Air Express bus service provides round-trip transportation from Mankato to and from the Minnesota State Fair for $25 everyday starting Aug. 27. What’s the deal with Dismaland?

Controversy surrounds artist’s latest art installment.

RAE FRAME Editor in Chief Famed graffiti artist Banksy has once again upset the art world with their larger-than-life “bemusement”

park, Dismaland, in Westonsuper-Mare, England. The “pop-up exhibition” has caused a considerable amount of controversy because of its graphic and politically satirical nature, featuring commentary on capitalism, the migrant crisis in the Middle East, and mega-corporations such as SeaWorld. Dismaland is quite a step away from Banksy’s preferred medium of graffiti art, which is why 58 other artists were invited to participate and create works for display. Art

Photos Courtesy of The Associated Press works range from life-size installments of an upturned Cinderella coach to interactive staff that seem rather less than delighted to be working for the derelict park. Reactions vary greatly on social media, with fans of Banksy’s previous work expressing excitement over such a different artistic experience and critics complaining that the exhibit is overkill, pretentious, or inappropriate.

If anyone is having trouble installing a router, the Ethernet cable plugs into the Internet jack on the wall…not into the modem.

One of the most common complaints is that because admission is charged for Dismaland, they are making considerable financial gain on the exhibit and turning their back on the artistic anarchy that is the graffiti world. Unfortunately for those claiming that Banksy is selling out or looking to cash in have ignored the fact that the admission to Dismaland is only £3 (about $5 USD), which is

laughable when compared to the admission fees of some parks and displays. It should also be pointed out that the exhibit is bringing thousands of people into the town of Weston-SuperMare, stimulating the local economy. This is important

A crash course in Minnesotan tradition MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—The Minnesota State Fair opens Thursday for its annual 12day run through Labor Day, Sept. 7. While its roots go back to 1855, this will be the fair’s 130th anniversary on its current site in Falcon Heights. The fair’s oldest attraction, the Ye Old Mill water ride, turns 100 this year. Here are things to know for the 2015 edition of the Great Minnesota Get-Together: WHAT’S NEW The fair features 40 new foods and 11 new frozen treats, from BBQ Pickle Ice Cream to Stuffed Italian Meatloaf On-a-Stick. Two new rides debut on the Mighty Midway: the New York New York Fun House and the Super Nova Roller Coaster. Free SPF 30 sunscreen is on tap at all information booths. Hmong Minnesota Day on Monday, Sept. 7, commemorates the 40th anniversary of the arrival of Hmong refugees in the state. Barn will be filled with activity anyway as the industry highlights the importance of turkey and chicken production to Minnesota, discusses the impact on farmers and highlights the recovery. Visitors can meet producers, browse displays and see presentations. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture exhibit in the Agriculture Horticulture Building offers animal health experts talking about bird flu and food safety. But the Turkey to Go stand is back and debuts a breakfast sandwich to complement its drumsticks and sandwiches. The highly popular All-

You-Can-Drink Milk Stand has doubled its price to $2 a cup. The Midwest Dairy Association says it’s the first price increase there in 11 years. The hike reflects the rising costs of running the booth, which started in 1955 when it charged a dime for a bottomless cup of cold, fresh milk. The association considered keeping the price at $1 and limiting customers to one cup, but stuck with the all-you-can-drink tradition instead. Even at $2, it’s still one of the best values at the fair. The price drops back to $1 for one day only, on Tuesday, Sept. 1, to mark Military Ap-

preciation Day. PROTEST Black Lives Matter plans a protest this Saturday, saying blacks are shut out of opportunities to become vendors. It starts at 11 a.m. with a march from Hamline Park up Snelling Avenue to the fair. It’s not clear how big of a disruption the protest will cause on the normally busy first Saturday of the fair, but it’s likely to at least tie up traffic on the east side of the fairgrounds for part of the day. Fair officials dispute the claims of unequal treatment. ON STAGE The Grandstand lineup is heavy on country artists. Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood have already sold out, but tickets are still available for Alan Jackson, and for Merle Haggard with Kris Kristofferson. Rock and pop acts include Def Leppard with Styx (sold out), Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Patti LaBelle with the Commodores. Garrison Keillor brings A Prairie Home Companion to the Grandstand for what might be his last time, as he’s retiring after the radio show’s 2015-16 season. Two journalists slain during broadcast ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — They were two young journalists, eager and hungry for a story, fulfilling their dreams of working in TV news. Reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, grew up in the Roanoke, Virginia, area and started their television careers there, becoming local celebrities in the process and finding love along the way. On Wednesday, the two were following their passion when they were gunned down by a disgruntled former reporter they once worked with at WDBJ. The shots rang out in the middle of a live story about the 50th anniversary of a reservoir known as Smith Mountain Lake. The attack was captured on Ward’s camera. In their work, the broadcasters were “full of smiles and full of exuberance,” said Jeffrey Marks, general manager of the Roanoke station. The pair worked as a team for the station’s “Mornin’” show, a time slot where many broadcast journalists get their start. They covered ev-

Grand Canyon with her family and ride horseback down the canyon. She enjoyed the arts, playing trumpet and French horn in high school. And she loved Mexican food. “The spicier, the better,” she said in the video. Ward, who played high school football, was a devoted fan of his alma mater, Virginia Tech. He rarely, if ever, missed a game, and was a “happy-go-lucky guy” — even during the early morning hours. “He was the kind of guy you wanted to be around, especially at three in the morning,” said Jay Webb, a former meteorologist at WDBJ. Robert Denton, head of the communications depart-

ment at Virginia Tech, said he handed Ward his diploma when he graduated from the Blacksburg school in 2011. “He was quite a talker, and he loved sports and politics,” Denton said. “You could not be around him and not have a wonderful conversation.” Both Parker and Ward grew up in the Roanoke area, attended high school there and later interned at the station. After Parker’s internship, she moved to a smaller market in Jacksonville, North Carolina, before returning to WDBJ. Their television jobs made them stars in the community. One of their more playful morning-show stories was about a local theater pro-

duction of “Cinderella.” Parker, dressed in costume, can hardly control her laughter as she invites Ward out from behind the camera. He appears in high heels and a dress as the “wicked stepmother” to both their delight. Both of them also found love at the station. Ward was engaged to producer Melissa Ott, who watched the shooting unfold live from the control room. Her last day was supposed to be Wednesday because she had accepted a new job in Charlotte, North Carolina. Parker was dating an anchor and had just moved in with him. Her boyfriend, Chris Hurst, posted several messages on Twitter and Facebook. “She was the most radiant woman I ever met,” Hurst wrote. “And for some reason, she loved me back. She loved her family, her parents and her brother.” Recently, Parker had tackled a tough story on child abuse. But she also had a less serious side: Her Facebook feed was punctuated with funny videos and photos of her smiling, ear-to-ear, often while on assignment with Ward. Her father, Andy Parker, said the family is devastated.

The presidential playlist CRIME...Continued CHILMARK, Mass. (AP) — By day, President Barack Obama enjoys the music of such artists as Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and the Bobs — Dylan and Marley. When the sun starts to set, his tastes shift to the mellifluous sounds of Al Green, Frank Sinatra, Beyonce, John Coltrane, Billie Holiday and others. Obama on Friday tweeted links to his daytime and evening summer playlists as the White House launched an official channel on Spotify, the popular music streaming service. Obama said he shared the lists “due to popular request.” The presidential presence on Spotify marks the latest step by a White House already active on social media to boost its presence in the online world. Obama and other White House officials regularly use Twitter, Facebook, Medium and other social media platforms to make announcements. “I go from shock and just not believing to realizing that it happened and just crying my eyes out,” he said in an interview at his home in Collinsville, Virginia. He was proud of his daughter’s journalistic ethics, recalling that police in Jacksonville would give her scoops because she showed herself to be trustworthy about not breaking embargos or reporting offthe-record conversations. He said she graduated from James Madison University in 3½ years and had wide interests ranging from whitewater kayaking to ballet. “She excelled at everything she did,” he said.

Remembering her skills in English and spelling, he said classmates called her the “grammar queen” because she would always correct people’s grammar. Parker said Flanagan got fired before his daughter started at the station full time and that she never mentioned having any problems with him. He said he’s not against gun ownership in general, but he supports tougher background checks and now plans to start advocating for them. “I can’t bring her back,” he said. “But I have to do something.”

A&E Summer 2015 Gaming Recap

TOP SPOTIFY TRACKS: “The Hills” by The Weeknd “Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weekend “679 (feat. Remy Boyz)” by Fetty Wap, Remy Boyz

tjcnewspaper.com MATTHEW EBERLINE A&E Editor So far, 2015 has been a better year for gaming than last, though we won’t see the anticipated flood of hot new titles until later this fall. Although new releases have slowed to almost a trickle recently, this summer proved that there is still a whole lot to look forward to as we head into the fall season and look forward to next year. Here’s a rundown of everything that happened in gaming over the

summer. The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) kicked things off in June with a horde of newly announced and highly anticipated titles. The biggest gaming event in the U.S. started with a press conference by Bethesda, where the studio’s Game Director, Todd Howard, took to the stage to describe a number of new features being introduced in the long awaited Fallout 4. The game will feature a completely redesigned character

creator, as well as a brand new settlement crafting system that players can use to create their own towns and settlements within the game’s wasteland environment and populate them with a number of different characters. Bethesda also took the opportunity to show some gameplay from the upcoming Doom reboot, as well as to announce Dishonored 2, the sequel to Arkane’s 2012 breakout hit, Dishonored. Fallout 4 is set to release

on November 10 while Dishonored 2 is expected to hit shelves sometime next spring. Microsoft took the stage next to show gameplay from the upcoming Halo 5: Guardians and Rise of the Tomb Raider, as well as reveal new titles including Gears of War 4, Cuphead, ReCore, and Rare’s Sea of Thieves. The software giant also took the opportunity to present the

Russian court sentences Ukrainian filmmaker to 20 years in prison ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia (AP) — A Russian military court convicted a prominent Ukrainian filmmaker on Tuesday of conspiring to commit terror attacks and sentenced him to 20 years in prison in what critics called a politically motivated show trial. The court in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don said Oleg Sentsov had set up a terror cell in the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed last year, and was plotting attacks. He will serve time in a maximum-security prison. Such lengthy prison sentences are rare in Russia even for politically tainted trials. The 39-year-old Crimean

native was tried along with Crimean activist Alexander Kolchenko, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison. As the judge wrapped up the session, the two men smiled and began to sing the Ukrainian national anthem. “Glory to Ukraine,” Sentsov said at the end, to which someone in the courtroom gave the traditional response: “Glory to the heroes.” Sentsov was a vocal opponent of Russia’s 2014 annexation of the Black Sea peninsula. Critics have dismissed his prosecution by Russia as retaliation for his pro-Ukrainian position. “The whole trial was designed to send a message. It

played into Russia’s propaganda war against Ukraine and was redolent of Stalinist-era show trials of dissidents,” said Heather McGill of Amnesty International. The international rights group, whose representatives observed the trial, said it was “rife with irregularities, including shocking revelations about the use of torture and other ill treatment to extract testimony.” Russian prosecutors claimed both men were plotting to blow up a Lenin monument and were behind attempts to burn down the offices of two Russia-related organizations. Sentsov, who unlike most

Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, passed away at age 55. new HoloLens hardware device, which allows users to see their games appear in real life. Sony presented their own conference later where they unveiled gameplay footage for the long-awaited The Last Guardian, much to everyone’s surprise. Following that, Sony presented not one, but two more mind-blowing reveals in the form of Final Fantasy VII Remake and a Kickstarter fund for Shenmue 3. Also announced were a sequel/reboot of the popular Hitman series and a new

game third-person game from Guerrilla Games called Horizon: Zero Dawn. While Nintendo had significantly less to offer, they still brought a few announcements to the table, including an official title and gameplay footage for the newest Star Fox game, called Star Fox Zero, a new entry in the Zelda franchise called Zelda Triforce Heroes, and Mario & Luigi Paper Jam. With all the exciting news and announcements that came out, this year’s E3 has often been cited as one of the best in recent history,

if not the best since the convention first opened its doors in 1995. Gaming’s other big event, Gamescom, was once again held in Cologne, Germany from August 5-9. While the announcements coming out of the convention were not quite as mind-blowing as those from E3, there was still plenty talk about, including Microsoft’s reveal that a sequel to 2009’s Halo Wars is in development for the Xbox One and PC, called Halo Wars 2. While a release date has yet to be confirmed, we do

know that Creative Assembly—the studio behind the hit Total War series of strategy games—is behind the wheel this time, taking the reigns from original Halo Wars developer, Ensemble Studios, who closed their doors as development wrapped up on the first game. For now, expect Halo Wars 2 to release in late 2016. Also announced at Gamescom was a release date for the mysterious Quantum Break, a mysterious Xbox One exclusive being developed by Remedy Games, the studio behind Alan Wake and the acclaimed Max Payne series. While not a whole lot is known about the game yet, the gameplay trailer looks impressive and features an all-star voice cast, including Shawn Ashmore (X-Men), Aiden Gillen (Game of Thrones), and Lance Reddick (Lord of the Rings), among others. Quantum Break is expected to release on April 5, 2016 for the Xbox One. While there was plenty of excitement coming from E3 and Gamescom, not all the news this summer was good, however. President of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, passed away on July 11 due to a bile duct growth at the age of 55. While it was long known that Mr. Iwata was in declining health, the news of his death was a surprise that sent shockwaves through not just the Nintendo community, but also the gaming community as a whole. Before becoming Nintendo’s fourth president

in 2002, Mr. Iwata worked as programmer for HAL Laboratory, known for the beloved Kirby and Super Smash Bros. video game franchises. As president, Iwata oversaw development of the Nintendo Wii, the Nintendo DS, and their successors, the Wii U and the 3DS, respectively. With Mr. Iwata’s passing, the gaming community has lost a major creative figure and the future of Nintendo seems uncertain, as a successor to Mr. Iwata has yet to be announced at the time of writing. With all the news to come out this summer, the gaming industry seems far busier now than this time last year. With PAX Prime happening right now in Seattle, and the Tokyo Game Show coming up next month, not too mention the large number of exciting games releasing in the coming months, expect plenty more gaming news on the horizon.

COURT continued from 20 Crimean residents didn’t apply for Russian citizenship after the annexation, was grabbed on a street in Crimea’s capital in May 2014 by Russian security officers and resurfaced days later in custody in Moscow. Sentsov had pleaded not guilty and insisted that a Russian court had no jurisdiction in his case. In his closing arguments last week, Sentsov said he believes there are Russians who oppose the Kremlin but are afraid to speak out. He said many Ukrainians felt the same way before joining the protests that led to the ousting of Ukraine’s pro-Russian president in early 2014. “The only thing I can wish this third, informed part

of the Russian population: Learn not to be afraid,” he said. His sister said the verdict was exactly what defense lawyers expected. “The investigators said a year ago that Oleg would get exactly 20 years and they kept their promise, despite our battle,” Natalia Kaplan told journalists. She said they would appeal. Dozens of prominent Russian filmmakers have petitioned the Kremlin to release Sentsov, including Andrei Zvyagintsev, whose 2014 film “Leviathan” won a Golden Globe. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on his Facebook page sent a message of support for Sentsov.

“Hang in there, Oleg,” he wrote. “A time will come when those who set this trial for you will land in the dock.” The United States condemned the sentences. “This is a clear miscarriage of justice,” State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement. “Both Ukrainians were taken hostage on Ukrainian territory, transported to and imprisoned in Russia, and had Russian citizenship imposed on them against their wills. They have reported abuses by Russian authorities who also restricted their access to lawyers, family, and others while in jail for more than a year.”

Obama Foundation to search for architect Presidential library to be completed in early 2020s CHICAGO (AP) — President Barack Obama’s foundation has started the process of choosing an architect to design his presidential library. The foundation said Wednesday it has invited firms to submit their qualifications to design the Obama Presidential Center, which will be located in one of two sites on Chicago’s South Side. The center will house Obama’s presidential archives and an interactive museum about his presidency. The foundation says it also envisions that the

center will include space for community gardening, sports, “healthy dining” and research. Foundation Chairman Martin Nesbitt said the list of architects invited to submit qualifications was heavily weighted toward U.S. firms, and particularly Chicago-based firms. President Obama and the first lady will choose finalists later this year. The center is expected to be finished in 2020 or 2021.

Hamlet receives mixed reviews Critics applaud Cumberbatch’s performance, pan directing. LONDON (AP) — It’s a “Hamlet” with Hollywood-level hype and an A-list star in Benedict Cumberbatch. But London’s latest stage sensation is more than a Shakespearean star vehicle. The play’s the thing, and this sold-out production has a visual wow factor as big as its lead actor. It’s mounted at the Barbican Theatre on a vast set of crumbling opulence by Es Devlin, who has designed stadium shows for the likes of U2, Kanye West and Lady Gaga. “When the curtain went up on the set, I slightly gasped,” said Cumberbatch’s “Sherlock” co-star Mark Gatiss after Tuesday’s opening night, attended by Cumberbatch’s wife Sophie Hunter, “Sherlock’’’s Martin Freeman and “Downton Abbey” stars Dan Stevens and Allen Leech. “I thought it was magnificent,” Gatiss said. The response from critics Wednesday was more mixed, with many finding the subtle lead performance at odds with director Lindsey Turner’s bravura staging. The production has a cinematic scope, using freeze-frame moments and stylized movement to underscore the drama — or, some felt, undermine it. The Daily Telegraph’s Dominic Cavendish judged

Photo Courtesy of The Associated Press Cumberbatch “a blazing, five-star Hamlet trapped in a three-star show.” The Guardian’s Michael Billington said the actor was “a good, personable Hamlet” but panned a “dismal” production “full of half-baked ideas.” Kate Maltby in The Times said Cumberbatch was a “thrillingly charismatic” actor in a “gaudy and commercial”

Biography of Jimmy Carter to be published in 2018 NEW YORK (AP) — The author of books on Presidents Barack Obama and Franklin Roosevelt is working on a biography of Jimmy Carter. Simon & Schuster announced Tuesday that Jonathan Alter’s book on Carter will have “extensive cooperation” from the former president and those who know him.

The book is scheduled to be published in 2018 and is currently untitled. Simon & Schuster is also Carter’s publisher and recently issued his memoir “A Full Life.” The 90-year-old Carter announced last week that he was being treated for cancer that has spread to his brain.

show. Others were more impressed by Turner’s staging, which nips and tucks Shakespeare’s longest play into a pacey three hours. The Independent’s Paul Taylor thought the production was “stunningly designed” and praised Cumberbatch’s “whirling energy.” Still, the mixed reviews

won’t dent the fan frenzy sparked by Shakespeare’s sexy, sulking Dane and the popular “Sherlock” star. The play’s three-month run sold out quicker than any show in West End history. Inside, a special “Hamlet shop” sells books, programs, mugs and skull-shaped piggy banks. Outside, fans form snaking lines at the stage door each

night. Early in previews, Cumberbatch emerged to plead with them not to record the performance on their phones. For all the hype, critics agreed this was more than stunt casting. Cumberbatch is an accomplished stage actor and won an Olivier Award for his performance in “Frankenstein” at the National Theatre in 2011. Reviewers praised the star’s subtle handling of the soliloquies — including the almost too-famous “To be or not to be” speech — in which the prevaricating prince mulls revenge for the murder of his father. Dressed like a scruffy modern-day student, alternately pensive and manic, this Hamlet is a man whose mind buzzes faster than he can process — a quality shared by several Cumberbatch characters, from sleuth Sherlock Holmes to code-breaker Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game.” Henry Hitchings in the London Evening Standard said Cumberbatch was “a charismatic Hamlet, energetic but also pensive.” The play will be broadcast live to movie theaters around the world on Oct. 15.

Sports Wins starting to come for the Twins

August 25, 2015 FOOTBALL September 3, 2015

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer When the Toronto Blue Jays picked up shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and ace David Price before the trade deadline arrived in late July, fans were eager to see what the Minnesota Twins would do. The fact of the matter is they did not have to do nearly as much, other than get some help for the fizzling bullpen. They went out and signed Kevin Jepsen, who is a reliable back-end reliever to take some stress off of Glen Perkins. The slide then followed for the club after the All-Star break, losing 16 of 22 games. The pitching appeared to be shaky, the offense was not scoring enough, and it looked to be the end of the road for the 2015 Twins. Third baseman and designated hitter Miguel Sano has lately gone on a tear, leading the Twins five straight victories. The 22 year-old rookie Phenom has 18 extra base hits since the All-Star break, and 31 hits total. In just 45 games this season, Sano is hitting

Vikings rolling in the preseason COREY YUMAN Staff Writer The NFL is back, and preseason is in full progress! That means one thing fans, get that purple and gold attire out and ready. The Vikes got to help kick off the 2015 year of football in the Hall of Fame game that pitted them against the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 9th. Starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater got his first taste of action in his sophomore season. Bridgewater proved to be effective in the one drive that he played, completing five of six passes for 44 yards. Bridgewater managed to take the Vikings all the way to the other side of the field into the red zone. They came up empty on scoring after failing to convert on a fourth and short. The majority of the game proved to be a real defensive

battle. No scores were put up in the game until the second quarter when the Steelers put up their first, and only score of the game with a field goal. The Vikings wouldn’t take long to put up some points of their own when backup QB Mike Kafka hit a wide-open MyCole Pruitt for a touchdown. There wouldn’t be any more offensive scores, but Vikings rookie Stefon Diggs did however show out and break off a 62 yard punt return for a touchdown. The Vikings would go ahead and win the game 14-3. On August 15th the Vikings welcomed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their 2nd preseason game. Prior to the game the Vikings received

If this is any sign of things to come it is bound to be a huge year for the young QB. Continuing the stellar play of quarterbacks, Shaun Hill threw for two touchdowns while passing 8 for 9 and 104 yards. On the other side of the ball Vikings rookie Eric Kendricks made quite the impact. The energy man was able to tack on four tackles, one sack, and one assisted tackle. The young linebacker is doing everything he can to make a case as to why he should start, and early on it’s looking like he is a safe bet. The defense as a whole

August 22nd would see the Vikings play their last preseason game at home, this time against the Oakland Raiders. The game saw a lot of action, and even a storm delay that had the teams and fans retreat to safety for a brief bit. Bridgewater once again shined brightly amid a mass of clouds over head. Bridgewater ended up throwing 8 for 14, and hit Charles Johnson for a touchdown early on in the game. On the flip side, the man that Bridgewater took over for, Christian Ponder, made his return to Minnesota with boo’s thrown at him from fans in attendance. He still managed to have an okay game throwing 7 for 11 and 69 yards. Anthony Barr would return to action, after sitting out the previous game against the Bucs. While he may not look

There is no need to hit the panic button just yet, but it’s something to keep a close eye on. The Vikes would win again, this time 20-12, making them a solid 3-0 to start off the football year. The Vikings next game will be when the head to Dallas on the 29th when they face the Cowboys, and attempt to make it a 4-0 preseason. The game is scheduled for 6pm on Fox TV.

below .500. They do have extremely important games ahead of them as well, as they play the first place in the American League Central Kansas City Royals six more times, the first place in the American League West Houston Astros six times, and the Los Angeles Angels four games at home. The club must win against less superior teams, and also win games against those who matter to claim that final playoff spot. The other wild card team will most likely be a team from the American League East in the Toronto Blue Jays or the New York Yankees. The Blue Jays currently have a one game lead on the Yankees in that division. The Twins this season have been a surprise to most fans this season, but none of it should be surprising if you have followed the team’s progress in the Minor Leagues. Rookies this season

has been the storyline and it should continue to be as the season goes on. No more is the definite spotlight on the first baseman Joe Mauer, as Mauer has played more as a role player late in his career. Outfielder Eddie Rosario has been one of those rookies to make a lot of noise this season, both with the bat and the glove. It has been a treat for fans to finally see what the future of the Twins’ franchise has in store, in Rosario, number overall prospect in the Major Leagues Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano. When all three are producing to their potentials, it can be contagious to the rest of the club. The team still has very highly noted prospects waiting their turns in the Minors, including 21 year-old future ace in Jose Berrios. Berrios could get the call to the Majors when Rosters expand on September first, and could be a viable asset for Minnesota’s playoff run. 2015 All-Stars Brian Dozier and Glen Perkins have been the consistent rocks of talent the Twins have seen this season. Dozier has 26 home runs, which leads the team, and is on pace to score over 100 runs on the season. Dozier has struggled a tad since the All-Star break however, as he has only hit .214 and struck

out in 30.7% of his at-bats, compared to 22.5% during the first half of the season. The Minnesota native Glen Perkins is having one of his best seasons so far, as he as saved 31 of 33 save opportunities with a 2.61 ERA. Perkins has struggled since the All-Star Break too, with a 7.36 earned run average and he has allowed 20 hits in 11 innings pitched. Perkins was

hampered by an injury that was a bulging disk in his neck. He returned earlier than initially thought would keep him sidelined for much longer. The positives during the All-Star’s struggles are the resurgence we are all witnessing from rookies on the club. It is a team game after all, and role players like catcher Kurt Suzuki are starting to get hot as well. The 2014 All-Star has hit .375 in his past seven games, and the Twins will gladly take that. The catcher has struggled to come anywhere near his career best numbers from last year to this season, so it is a definite positive to see Suzuki swing a hot bat with consistency. This is where the winners are distinguished from the losers. The Minnesota Twins find themselves right in the thick of the playoff race, and this time of year could not be any more exciting for baseball fans worldwide. Every game matters, every pitch matters, every inch will make a difference. It is time to see what these Twins are made of, and like every season seems to go: the hottest team will make the loudest noise come October baseball.

MLB Playoff Picture is in full swing LUKE LONIEN Sports Editor As the MLB schedule begins to wind down, teams are starting to gear up for the ultimate grind. The grind to the playoffs. The American League is very crowded with the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, Tampa Bay Rays and the Baltimore Orioles all within contention of the two wild card spots. The Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels will battle the rest of the season for the American League West division. The Kansas City Royals have all but locked up the Central Division. The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays will battle for the East Division title. Expect the Blue Jays and the Yankees to both make the playoffs, while the Rangers, Twins, Angles, Orioles, Rays, Angels and Astros will battle for the final wild card spot. The National League is a different story. As of now, the playoff teams are almost set, with the New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers winnings their respected divisions, while the

The only other team in somewhat of reaching distance is the reigning World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, whom are 7.5 games out of the final wild card spot. The Royals are the only team with a strong hold on their division lead, leading the Twins by 13 games. The Blue Jays and the Yankees are separated by 1.5 games, with Baltimore and Tampa Bay trailing by eight games. Since the Blue Jays acquired Troy Tulowitzki and David Price at the non-waiver trade deadline, they have been the best team in the big leagues. Price has been nothing short of dominant, and the additions have created a

huge buzz in Toronto, they have a legit shot at winning not only their division, but the American League pennant. The Angels and Rangers trail the Astros by 5.5 and five games, respectfully. The Angles look like a team that should be in the playoffs, but they just can’t seem to get their pitching going. Jared Weaver is past his prime, C.J. Wilson can’t stay healthy and Garrett Richards hasn’t returned to form since his injury. It will be very hard to count out an offense that has Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, though. With the Rangers acquiring Cole Hammels at the deadline, they made it very clear that they believe they will compete for the next couple years. They have really hit their stride late this

season, winning seven of their last ten. They also have Prince Fielder, which always helps your offense. Fielder is hitting .317 with 17 home runs and 71 RBI. The Astros have been the most surprising team in the major this season. Their pitching has been unbelievable. Dallas Keuchel is going to be in the conversation for the A.L Cy Young and Scott Kazmir is just flat out filthy. Their offensive production has come from everywhere in their line up, centered around Jose Altuve and Evan Gattis. In the N.L the Mets lead the Nationals by 5.5 games, a lead that seems to be ever growing. With a very good

Deadly fall at future Vikings stadium MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A construction worker plunged about 50 feet to his death at the Minnesota Vikings' new stadium site Wednesday morning while a second worker with him was seriously injured. Officials were still trying to determine how the accident happened, said John Wood, senior vice president with Mortenson Construction, the general contractor overseeing the $1 billion-plus project. The man who died, an employee of Berwald Roofing Co., fell from the edge of the roof into a snow gutter on the north side of U.S. Bank Stadium about 45 minutes into his shift and was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital, Wood said. Another man from the same subcontractor was injured on the roof but did not fall from it, Wood said, adding that the circumstances of how he got hurt also weren't immediately known. He also said he didn't know the extent of that worker's injuries. Wood said investigators were

"Our priority is to ensure that we know exactly what happened and ensure that it never happens again. A man lost his life on this project

today and that simply never should happen," he said. Wood said they hoped to resume work Thursday but would make that decision later. Counselors will be on site when work does resume and will stay as long as necessary, he said. And while the project faces tight deadlines so the stadium can open in time for the Vikings preseason in August

2016, he said that wasn't his concern now. "We're not thinking about the construction schedule right now," he said. "We're thinking about these two men and their families."

still determining what kind of work the two men were doing, whether they were wearing harnesses or other safety gear at the time, or whether such equipment was required where the men were working. and Bryce Harper. The St. Louis Cardinals have been the best team in the majors since day one of the season it seems like. They win on the road and at home and their starting rotation always seems to be on top of their game. The Cardinals are leading undoubtedly the best division in baseball. The Pirates and Cubs are two of the best

teams in the N.L and will most likely have to play in the one game playoff. The Cubs have tons of young talent that includes Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell. The Cubs also have their own fine starting rotation including Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta. The debate for the Cubs is, who should they start if they make the wild card game? Lester pitched in one last season for the A’s, and was signed to be their ace of staff, but Arrieta and been dynamite. An interesting question for the Cubs going forward. The Pirates have Andrew McCutchen playing much better baseball as of late. Even after his slow start, McCutchenis still batting .299 on the season. Young gun Jo Ho Kang has been great for the Pirates as well hitting .290 with 12 home runs. The Twins are another team that has turned some head this season. The Twins have had about as roller coaster of a season that a team can have. they had a terrible start to the season, but really turned it on being one of the best teams in May. The Twins do not have a great starting rotation, like so many other contenders do, nor do they have a loaded offense.

What the Twins do have is timely hitting and a couple guys in the lineup that can really hit the ball. Brian Dozier and Miguel Sano have really carried the Twins so far this season, as well as another rookie in Eddie Rosario. The Twins may be a team to watch going forward, but this will be a tough year for them to make the playoffs with a lack in starting pitching. The Royals and Cardinals are the two favorites to reach the World Series, and it might be an all Missouri World Series come October. With Johnny Cueto now leading the Royals starting rotation, and the completeness of the Cardinals rotation with a mix of some studs in their lineup, and all Missouri battle would be very exciting. It is going to be an exciting September to watch baseball with the log-jam of teams in the A.L and the dominate pitching staffs in the N.L. Now is the best time for teams to start playing their best baseball. The hottest teams in September always seem to be the best teams in October.

Vikings to stay with MSU LUKE LONIEN Sports Editor The Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota State University, Mankato have agreed upon a three-year extension for the Vikings, who will now continue holding training camp on the Minnesota State Mankato campus. The Vikings have called MSU their home for training camp since 1965 and will continue to use Blakeslee Stadium to prepare for their upcoming seasons. The agreement means the Vikings will train at Minnesota State University, Mankato past the 50-year mark--more

Photos by Trevor Cokley than one-third of the lifetime of the institution that began as Mankato Normal School in 1868 and will celebrate its 150th year in 2017. “We’re very happy to announce a three-year extension to host the Minnesota Vikings training camp,” said Dr. Richard Davenport, president of Minnesota State University, Mankato. “It’s been wonderful to celebrate 50 years of Vikings training camp on our campus this summer, and we look forward to the Vikings being here during the University’s 150th year anniversary celebration.” Fans in the Mankato area will lineup along Julia Sears on move-in-day and up and down Stadium Street to grab autographs from all of their favorite Vikings players, for at

least the next three seasons. The Vikings 50 years at Minnesota State University, Mankato is the second longest in the NFL, only trailing the Green Bay Packers at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. “Announcing this extension with Minnesota State University, Mankato, is a perfect way to celebrate our 50 years together,” said Vikings Owner/President Mark Wilf. “Vikings training camp is a great tradition for the team and our fans, and we look forward to this continued partnership with both the university and the City of Mankato.”
