MSU stays safe with campus security MARJAN HUSSEIN STAFF WRITER Safety is a vital aspect when establishing and running any learning institution. Safety especially in learning institutions has proven a prevalent issue over the last few years. Minnesota State Mankato University Security is a full-time security department that works 24/7 to ensure the safety of all personnel on the campus of the university. Sandi Schnorenberg,

Schnorenberg also states that University Security has a healthy and strong working relationship with Mankato Public Safety Department to certify that safety is always a top priority at MSU Mankato. University Security is made up of unique pieces that add up to make the department a well-built safeguarding body. Schnorenberg says that her main aim is to

students are in trouble they are more inclined to reach out to University Security,” Schnorenberg said. Schnorenberg is highly motivated in getting her staff to go to events and generally establishing a sort of interaction with students. “Although we do have staff, patrol officers and student workers ensuring the job is
done, creating a partnership with students would make things run more efficiently thus generating an ever-safe environment,” Schnorenberg said. Schnorenberg states that majority of crimes are those of opportunity, thus being, students should always be vigilant of suspicious behavior. Students can access a ton

Dua Lipa: rising to fame and up the charts
AARON YOUNG STAFF WRITER It was my freshman year of college and I was song exploring on Spotify, then came across a song by an artist I never heard of. Her name was Dua Lipa and the song was “Blow Your Mind.” I listened to it and to this day it will be in my favorite songs. It has the beat, the music video is awesome, and the best reason, the attitude! Dua Lipa is a British singer

If we don’t f*** this whole thing up, guaranteed I will blow your mind.” Watch out, she has a sassy side to her and is not afraid to show it. This song charted at 72, but without a doubt won over me. Before you give her a look, the majority, if not all, her songs are based around love and relationships. However, they are sure to make everyone move their hips. She first came onto the scene in 2015, with her debut song “New Love”.

Discovery finds evidence of interspecies breeding KOLBY SPOMER STAFF WRITER The scene is a dark cave. Inside, a young girl breathes the last breaths of her life, before she dies of unknown causes in an ancient and cruel world. Flash forward 90,000 years, and her remains are finally discovered inside of the cave by a group of scientists looking for Denisovan remains, a group of humanoids that were found in this cave back in 2008. They were shocked to find, however, that this girl didn’t exactly fit into that category of people. She shared traits with Neanderthals as well, a group of sub-humans that went extinct around 40,000 years ago. This meant, as crazy as it was, that this girl belonged to both the Neanderthals and the Denisovans. These scientists were looking at the first real, concrete proof that interspecies breeding had actually taken place. Mating
Evolutionary Anthropology told the Independent on Wednesday. You may be asking yourself, “Yeah cool, old people banged, so what. Why should I care?” Well, dear reader, since they found this evidence, it would lead one to believe that there must have been more, as Professor Chris Stringer told the Independent. “To find an actual hybrid of such a mating in a still sparse fossil record must surely indicate that these mating’s could not have been rare events, at least when the populations met each other, under whatever circumstances,” said Stringer, an expert in human origins based at the Natural History Museum, who was not at all involved in the research. This means that, yes, potentially you, reading this right now, could have Neanderthal blood pumping through your veins... right now. Now, before you go running around screaming, “NO, not me! There isn’t any subhuman blood in these Photo courtesy of flickr

Schnorenberg states that an Amnesty Law applies in the case of underage consumption if one calls for help. None of the parties involved can be taken into custody. Schnorenberg also says that the main issue with the start of the academic year is educating students about the different rules and regulations of the University. “Students are always provided with guidelines on acceptable and unacceptable behavior therefore taking a couple of minutes to go through it would enlighten one on a number of issues they may be unsure of,” Schnorenberg said.

sweat it. Instead, marvel at the fact that somehow us, the human race today, can be so racist and bigoted towards other members of the same species while 90,000 years ago we were able to get over the whole species thing enough to have sex and raise a child.

US soldier pleads guilty to trying to help Islamic State HONOLULU (AP) — A soldier based in Hawaii pleaded guilty Wednesday to trying to help the Islamic State group, telling a judge he provided secret military information, a drone meant to track U.S. troops and other support to undercover agents he believed were members of the terrorist organization. Sgt. 1st Class Ikaika Kang, 35, handcuffed and wearing a beige prison jumpsuit, spoke in a clear voice when he told a U.S. magistrate judge he’s guilty of all four counts against him. “Your honor, I provided unclassified, classified documents to the Islamic State,” Kang said, adding that he also provided the drone. He agreed when Assistant U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson described other support he provided to undercover agents Kang believed were part of the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS. By at least early 2016, Kang became sympathetic to the group, Sorenson said. The FBI gathered information from sources he knew, worked with or lived with when it opened an investigation in August 2016, Sorenson said. Kang provided voluminous, digit al documents that included sensitive information including the U.S. military’s weapons file, details about a sensitive mobile airspace management system, various military manuals and documents containing personal information about U.S. service members, Sorenson said. Trained as an air traffic controller with a secret security clearance, Kang also provided documents including call signs, mission procedures and radio frequencies, “all of which
would have been helpful to ISIS,” Sorenson said. At one of the meetings with agents Kang believed were part of the Islamic State, he swore loyalty to the group in Arabic and English and kissed an Islamic State flag given to him by a purported ISIS sheikh, Sorenson said. He then said he wanted to get his rifle and fight — “just go to downtown Honolulu and Waikiki strip and start shooting,” prosecutors said in a news release announcing the plea. After that, FBI agents arrested him. “He was clearly enticed. But the law of entrapment is quite complex and often very difficult for the defense to prove,” Kang’s defense attorney, Birney Bervar, said
said. Kang was obsessed with videos depicting terrorism beheadings, suicide bombings and other violence, and he watched them in his bedroom for hours daily, a confidential informant told agents. Kang told the informant that if he became an Islamic State member, he would be a suicide bomber and attack Schofield Barracks, a sprawling Army base outside Honolulu, according to an affidavit filed in the case. Kang watched the videos for four to five hours each weekday and more on the weekends, the informant told agents in 2016. The informant “remembered feeling sick to his stomach, while Kang laughed and insulted the
“Kang told the informant that if he became an Islamic State member, he would be a suicide bomber and attack Schofield Barracks...” after the hearing. In exchange for Kang’s guilty plea, prosecutors said they won’t charge him with additional crimes, including violations of the espionage act, other terrorism-related laws and federal firearms statutes. Kang swore to defend the United States as a member of the military, but he betrayed his country, Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers said. He was also trained as an Army combat instructor and recorded training videos he intended for Islamic State group members in the Middle East to use, Sorenson
victims,” the affidavit said. During the first week of September 2016, Kang told the informant “that if he were to do something like shoot up a large gathering, it would be out of his hatred for white people, the wicked and nonMuslims.” Kang began researching Islam in 2014, couldn’t wait to move to the Middle East to “join the cause” and was “only in the military for a paycheck,” the informant said. The U.S. government asked a judge to allow a tracking device to be placed on Kang’s car in October 2016 and received several extensions. Agents said

in their applications for a tracking device that they needed to monitor him continuously because they feared he would carry out an attack. Officials with the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade told the FBI they were concerned about their ability to monitor Kang, noting that he was to return from leave on May 25, 2017 — the same day as a change-of-command
ceremony, the affidavit said. Brigade personnel feared the large gathering “represented a target of opportunity for Kang should he want to harm members of the unit.” Kang is still in the Army, but his duty status is confined, said Lt. Col. Curt Kellogg, with the 25th Infantry Division. He’s been held without bail since his arrest.

MADISON DIEMERT NEWS EDITOR As college students, we always have somewhere to be- whether it’s work, school, or a party, we’re on the go. And for us, we’re lucky. Most of us live close enough to walk, bike, skateboard, or take the bus for free, if we leave near a bus stop. And if we have to, we can drive. That is, if we own a car. But a lot of people can’t afford a car, or just don’t have one. They can’t buy one or the gas is too expensive. And these people might not be as lucky to live near their school or place of work. For them, they need to take public transport. But what if they’re not a college student? They wouldn’t have access to a free bus ride like the rest of us. This is a problem in many communities, especially communities that are struggling and deep into poverty. What happens to these people if they don’t have a car or enough money to take the bus or train? They also have places to be just

like us, and if they live too far from work, they won’t be able to get there. That causes more problems. First, they couldn’t afford a bus
should be offered free public transportation. In fact, I think public transportation should be free for everyone. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be
“I can pay for my own gas if need be, but the homeless veteran on the side of the road can’t even pay for a burger at McDonald’s.” ride, and now they can’t even get to work to try to earn the money for said ride. It would never end. Without proper transportation, many people living in poverty will suffer, and this is where I get to my point. These people
able to rely on our city for a public service, just as parks are free, a bus ride to and from work should be free. This also goes for homeless people. The homeless don’t have anywhere to stay, and if they get a job, many of them will have no way of getting
there if they are staying at a shelter some miles away. We can’t expect that the homeless or the poor should pay a fee that they cannot afford. These people already don’t have money. How are they to earn a decent living when they have to worry about paying several fees a day? I get that everyone who owns a car has to pay for their own gas, or people who can afford the ride pay for it, but these people can’t afford either. I can pay for my own gas if need be, but the homeless veteran on the side of the road can’t even pay for a burger at McDonald’s. We need to try to make public transportation services free, for the sake of those who need it.

Discrimination of sexual activity should stop Opinion
MADISON DIEMERT NEWS EDITOR Sex has always been a sensitive topic. So many people have opinions about sex; who should be doing it, whether it’s good or bad, how many times is too many, etc. Don’t get me wrong, opinions are good to have and I think it’s important to form an opinion about sex. But why are we so concerned about other people’s sex lives and what they do with their bodies? First of all, sex is a completely natural thingpractically all humans do it. Even your parents and grandparents have had sex before. I know many people who think sex is a bad thing, and that can be based on many aspects of their lives, like religion for one. But the important thing is to let other people live their damn lives.
You should not have an opinion on another person’s sex life. You have no right to talk about someone else’s sex life. You have no reason to shame them for even having a sex life. Again, it’s perfectly normal. And everyone should have the liberty of having sex with whoever they want, however they want (as long as it’s consensual). The next thing I noticed, is that people feel the need to comment on how many people others have sex with. Something like that is completely arbitrary and it should only matter to the person who is having sex with those people. That’s their sex life, not yours. Women especially have faced discrimination based on who and how many people they have sex with. Women will even slander other women for having sex- it’s not just guys. And in some ways that’s worse. We shouldn’t be wasting time and do something that’s actually productive, rather than worry why this girl is having sex with 10 people, or why this guys is having sex with none. Slutshaming is so over. It’s 2018, and it’s
time we understand that other people make their own choices. I get that many people are religious or have other aspects of their lives that in turn contribute to their opinions, but if you really think that it’s so bad that Stacy from Ethics class sometimes talks to her friend about having sex with her boyfriend… you need to find something else to channel that anger into. Just take a deep breath and understand that not everyone leads a life just like yours. Not everyone follows
their religion as closely as others or follows their parent’s advice as well as some. We are all just trying to live our lives and get through college as quick as possible. And without having to be harshly judged just because we’re sexually active. There will always be a stigmatism around sex, though. Someone’s always going to have an opinion on why you shouldn’t have sex with someone before marriage, or someone who’s the same gender. And I don’t think anyone is going to read this opinion article and
suddenly change their mind on judging people for their sex lives. But hey, at least I get to share my opinions and tell people not to be so crappy toward others. We’re all already getting judge for so many other things. We’re all going through stuff and being put through the ringer in college. So really, why not just keep your mouth shut about Stacy and her boyfriend and just drink some coffee. I can tell you, you and Stacy will be a lot happier if you do.

Student Government minutes Multiple vacant positions open in Student Government and Student United
DAVID BASSEY EDITOR IN CHIEF With no placards in sight last night, the 86th student senate held its first meeting of the academic year. With over 30 senators and members of the faculty in attendance, Speaker Nathan Pesklo called the meeting to order in a somewhat traditional Roberts rule style providing clarifications to senators who were unfamiliar with the process. Concluding the roll call, the meeting moved into a brief period of presentations and open forum from a variety of presenters. Following the introductions, Speaker Pesklo requested for the approval of the consent agenda which confirmed the approval

After the dust settled, Speaker Pesklo declared the floor open for officer reports. President Elizabeth Cronin delivered her sevenpoint officer report by informing senators about the

The currently vacant seats are in Social and Behavioral sciences, Education and Allied Health and Nursing. President Cronin then mentioned that appointments also remain for the legislative affairs coordinator and academic affairs coordinator positions. Following this, she reminded the senators of the first home football game at 6pm where the senators will be giving out free t-shirts prior to kick-off at 4:30 p.m.
Next, President Cronin stated that the first meet and confer will be held on Thursday, September 6 from 11:30am to 1 p.m. at CSU 293. “This will be a great chance for students to meet with the administrators and find out what is happening on campus with lunch provided.” She added. President Cronin then spoke about the first board meeting for the Students United which resulted in the selection of four organizational objectives and then announced the open treasurer position for Students United with elections to be held at the October delegates assembly. President Cronin then
concluded her officer report with a warm smile and encouraged the senators to watch out for the one-onones with the President and Vice President, which will begin for the first time this year. Looking chic in her white jacket, Vice president Katelyn Ogunfolami began her officer report re-assuring senators of the upcoming senate retreat set for September 14 or 15, a straw vote was then taken, however the final decision was not concluded. Vice President Ogunfolami also spoke about Students United and her role as a campus organizing coordinators. She mentioned that there are open positions available with opportunities for students to build their professional skills and get involved. Concluding the officer reports, Speaker Pesklo reminded the senators about completing their office hours. He stated that this could be done either in the office lobby, residential hall lobby, tabling or attending diversity events. For more information about the Student government and how to get involved, stop by at CSU 280 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and let your voice be heard.

Boy swept in sewer is saved MADISON, Wis. (AP) — An 11-year-old boy sucked into a flooded Wisconsin storm sewer was saved when an eagle-eyed firefighter saw the boy’s fingers pop through an opening in a manhole cover. The astonishing rescue Tuesday evening came as storms pounded the southern half of the state and southeastern Minnesota. The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office said the boy was playing with friends in a flooded drainage ditch after the rains passed around 6 p.m. in the Village of Harrison. He disappeared under the water and didn’t surface. A dive team, sheriff’s deputies and volunteer firefighters responded. Deputy Fire Chief Wesley Pompa said that when they arrived they found a bystander trying to hold onto the boy but he was sucked into a culvert that led to the storm sewer. Pompa said the water was rushing so quickly it would have sucked a full-grown man into the culvert. The rescuers could do nothing except try to determine where the flow might take the boy. Pompa called the village road superintendent, Bob Kesler, to the scene to help map out the sewers. Pompa and Kesler were standing on top of a manhole cover about 30 feet (9 meters) away from the ditch when Pompa saw the boy’s fingers pop through an opening in the cover. The boy had found air pocket just beneath the manhole cover and was hanging onto a ladder leading up to the manhole. The firefighters wrenched the cover open. Pompa and Kesler lifted the boy to safety.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said passengers were given complementary food and water and the trains are designed to accommodate

Parts of Interstate 90/94 were closed overnight due to standing water on the pavement and highways across southern Wisconsin have been rendered impassable. Emergency officials in Madison were still grappling with flooded streets on Wednesday morning and warned commuters to expect delays for days. Several tornadoes were spotted Tuesday afternoon in Campbellsport, Lomira, Oakfield and Brandon, Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service. The service has not confirmed that tornadoes hit in any of these locations. Possible tornadoes also demolished two barns in Fond du Lac County, killing about 100 cattle, Wisconsin Emergency Management spokeswoman Lori Getter said. Video Games: “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” New installment is the third and final in the origin story AMANDA HINSHAW STAFF WRITER Fall looks to be promising for video gamers everywhere. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the third installment of the Tomb Raider franchise, is set to be released on Sept. 12 on Xbox and Playstation 4. Many video gamers may already know Lara Croft as an older woman who can come across as cold, bureaucratic and sarcastic. The reboot of Tomb Raider has essentially gone back to her origin story, before she became the ruthless, gun-wielding archaeologist that we all know. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the third and final installment to Lara Croft’s origin story and in this video game, players will begin to see a very dark side of her. Video gamers will see in this series that Croft has gone from a naïve, young woman, to a rugged explorer where she is not afraid to endure grueling combat. Croft, while at the height of her capabilities, shows that she

is still immature and makes rash decisions without thinking things through. WARNING: This review may contain some spoilers. Croft, along with her best friend, Jonah, is on
her way to Mexico when the plane that they are riding goes down in the middle of the jungle. Croft tries to land the plane, but to no avail. The plane in now in the middle of the jungle and Croft has to find her way
back to Jonah. She manages to have a radio on her, so she is at least able to communicate with Jonah, so they aren’t completely cut-off from one another. Croft is on her way back to Jonah when she encounters Trinity, a para-

Spotify and Showtime join forces College students can now get Showtime with their Spotify Accounts KOLBY SPOMER STAFF WRITER Earlier this year, the mega successful music streaming site Spotify joined forces with Hulu, a movie and television streaming site akin to Netflix, to offer students across the country both their respective services for $4.99 a month. This move was widely regarded as super dope and a really good idea. Both companies have stated that the decision was an overwhelming success and have increased the user bases by millions of users. Because of all this, Showtime, another streaming
service, has decided to join in on the party, changing the original deal from the already amazing Hulu and Spotify combo to a new Showtime, Hulu, Spotify masterdeal for the same low price of $4.99. With the Showtime addition comes every season of shows like Dexter, a critically acclaimed hit about the titular serial killer, along with access to newer episodes of shows still airing, like Shameless, the highly popular family drama about poverty. It remains to be seen how successful this move will be, but if the past joining is any indication, this will be a very, very large success.

OTR II - The Carters in concert
Jay-Z, Beyoncé dazzle Minneapolis to a show filled with masterpieces MANSOOR AHMAD STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER The power couple came to the U.S. Bank Stadium this past Wednesday, Aug 8 and put on a moving performance filled with some of their most familiar hits. While the famed duo had visited the Twin Cities individually before, their first time together was one for the books. The Carters put together a setlist featuring a number of hits from across their lengthy, critically acclaimed careers. Although not performing a few of their most loved tracks, the dynamic duo did make up for it by performing a couple from their first joint album “Everything Is Love”. Beginning the night for the Carter family was the young, fiery duo Chloe X Halle. Fans were still filling up the U.S. Bank stadium as the performances began, but it only went louder with every song. Their glittering dresses shone across the stage as the singers were dwarfed by the gigantic, multi-paneled screen behind them, “OTR” written across the screen spilt into three. But perhaps the most iconic sight of the night was the entrance of the R&B famous

couple. Holding hands and dressed in all white, emulating wedding attire, Beyoncé and Jay-Z descended on an elevator to a booming Minneapolis crowd. The show began with the Carters alternating between verses on “Holy Grail”, with Jay-Z rapping in his signature, hard-hitting style and boldness, coupled with Be-
yoncé’s graceful rendition of the chorus originally sung by Justin Timberlake. Being the first time I ever saw either of the superstars, there couldn’t have been a grander introduction. As the show progressed, the stage transformed multiple times with the tour’s back up dancers performing alongside Beyoncé on sever-
al songs. Combined with thematically connected visuals being played throughout the show, the concert could be conceived as one, big performance, with an underlying message of love and unity. But as if that was not enough, the mesmerizing stage production kept ‘evolving’ throughout the last 1015 songs. With her troupe
literally on board, Beyoncé and co. performed “Run the World (Girls)” while the stage, now raised over the middle section between the two longer, runway-esque stages emerging from either side of the main stage, moved over

Album Review: Travis Scotts “Astroworld” New installment is the third and final in the origin story KOLBY SPOMER STAFF WRITER
Yes, it’s true. After two years of waiting, in which a child was born, a mediocre mixtape was dropped, and a relationship blossomed, Travis Scott finally opened the gates to Astroworld. And it was well worth the wait. Travis has managed to nearly perfect his trap heavy, atmospheric sound, while also adding lyrics and themes that make you think a little more than the subjects explored on his last record, Birds in the Trap Sing Mcknight. Travis Scott has been making trap music since 2013, when he dropped his initial tape, “Owl Pharaoh”. Since then, he has been cultivating his own area in the music sphere, with his dark and
heavy sounds, reminiscent of a fever dream. While there may have been missteps here and there, (See Huncho Jack) he has clearly always possessed a ton of musical talent. So when “Astroworld” dropped, I wasn’t as blown away as many others were, seeing it as more of an artist living up to his potential. The opening tracks, “Stargazing”, “Carousel”, and “Sicko Mode”, are some of Scott’s best work. They also show his growth as a rapper, and as a man who makes some of the most hype music in the business. The next group of songs, including “Stop Trying to be God” and “Skeletons”. These songs help cultivate the vibe of the record,

The Latest: Franklin dressed in blue for last public viewing DETROIT (AP) — The Latest on a second day of public events honoring Aretha Franklin in Detroit. (all times local): 1:20 p.m.--People are continuing to stream in for a second day to pay their respects to Aretha Franklin as she lies in repose in the rotunda of Detroit’s Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The Queen of Soul’s public viewing continued Wednesday, with fans queuing festively outside, then walking solemnly and single file into the museum. There, they found Franklin in her bronze casket in a sheer light blue dress and matching shoes, a change from the red outfit she wore on Tuesday. On the inside of the lid embroidered into the fabric is “Aretha Franklin the Queen of Soul.” Gina Moorman attended Tuesday night’s sorority ceremony in Franklin’s honor and returned Wednesday. RAIDER Continued from page 12 ty to find an ancient dagger that is supposed to be the key to start “The Cleansing”. Croft knows her late father, Richard Croft, had mentioned Dominguez in his research notes more than a few times. Richard Croft was an archaeologist before he was murdered and Croft believes Trinity was behind it. Croft
eventually finds the dagger in an ancient tomb and as soon as she takes it, she accidentally starts a Mayan apocalypse and she now has to race to stop Dominguez and Trinity at all costs from destroying humanity as they know it. Players will find that Eidos-Montreal and Crystal
Dynamics, who have collaborated throughout the Tomb Raider series reboot, has created a much bigger HUB than what was previously seen in the last two installments. Players are now able to choose their own level of difficulty and they are able to shut off hints that Croft would have normally given,
in order to keep the game rolling. Players will also be excited to find out that the stealth factor has increased significantly from the last two games, where the players would have had to stay out of sight or else they would have been found and a shootout would ensue. Play-
ers are now able to use mud as camouflage and they are able to use that to blend in with the lush environment of the jungle. Players should be on the look-out for Shadow of the Tomb Raider as it hits shelves this fall.
like “Can’t Say” and “Coffee Bean” providing an even more in depth look at Travis’ life at the moment. All said, I liked this record alot. The lyrics are good (for
the most part), the production is amazing per the usual, and the themes are better than they’ve ever been. I’m not sure if Travis will ever make something as good as
this ever again, but I certainly hope he does, because I know he can and now so does everyone else.

FRANKLIN Continued from page 14 viewing at a Detroit museum. Franklin, who died on Aug. 16, will be laid to rest on Friday. 12:30 a.m.-Hundreds of members of Delta Sigma Theta paid tribute to their soror, Aretha Franklin at a packed ceremony that capped a day of mourning in Detroit. The sorority’s traditional
Omega Omega service Tuesday night lasted nearly an hour, saluting Franklin with song, scripture and words. Franklin was inducted into Delta Sigma Theta as an honorary member in 1992. She was remembered for her regal presence and love of her community — traits they say embody the organization’s virtues.
A sea of women wearing black, many with African violet corsages and pearl necklaces lead a procession into the rotunda of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. More than 1,000 people attended the service.. Franklin died Aug. 16 and will be laid to rest on Friday.
Continued from page 13 the fans in the middle to resounding cheers. It was literally a moving performance! Other highlights from the beautifully intricate show was the equally astounding vocal performance of Beyoncé on “Perfect Duet”. As if it
wasn’t the perfect way to end a 40-song setlist, the Carters topped the low-tempo track with the upbeat, rhythmic “Apes**t” off their sole joint album. It’s now safe to say that I’ve seen a crowd go apes**t, and it was amazing.

Mavs football looks to wrangle up the Mustangs With the SMSU Mustangs in town, the Mavericks look to put on a show tonight at home at the Blake
AARON YOUNG STAFF WRITER The Maverick football team will be back on the gridiron for their first regular season game of the season vs. the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs tonight at 6:05pm at Blakeslee Stadium. Last year, the Mavs beat the Mustangs 54-7. Spectators will get a first look at our Minnesota State Mavericks football team this year. Coming into the year, the football team is ranked #1 in the NSIC. That isn’t surprising, considering the team finished 13-1 last season in the conference. Looking at the bigger picture, the Mavericks find themselves in the top six in 3 preseason polls. Perhaps most important is the AFCA, or American Football College Association, poll. They’re rank #3, behind West Florida, and last year’s champions, Texas A-M Commerce. Head Coach Todd Hoffner doesn’t let the polls, or more

pectations are high for this team, a theme that’s been constant for all Maverick sports. “Anybody who steps on that field we believe that they can play at a high standard and we also expect them to play at a high level,” said Hoffner. From the head coach to the defensive backs coach, Lavell Jackson is making his debut as the coach for the talented secondary this season. Hired in July, he is excited to get the first regular season underway. After spending a year at Bethany Lutheran College, Jackson is now looking after the DB’s. Jackson had this to say about his ability to focus on the littler things while being thankful for having the opportunity to coach for this team: “Now I can focus on just my guys in the back half and really dive into more technical things… Coming to Minnesota State University is an honor and a privilege. Being a part of a program with such success and tradition such as this one, it’s really excited.” Another person who cannot wait to get on the grid-
iron, is QB Ryan Schlichte. The starter is coming off a season where he threw for almost 2,000 yards and 25 TD’s with a completion rate of 52.9%. As a leader, his message to the team was to give it their all and keep going, no matter how difficult the situation seems. His goal, was rather simple. “Our goal is always to defend the Blake and go 1-0 in front of our unbelievable fans.” I think the fans would agree with that one. As for students who are available tonight and still on the fence, Head Coach has some words of encouragement for them. “We’d love to have you experience the Mavericks so please come out and support Minnesota State Maverick football.” You heard him, and admission is free for all students, so all you need to do is bring you fun and enthusiasm to the game tonight! The bleachers fill up quick, so arrive early and get your cheers ready for the first game under the lights at the Blake!

Cross-country looks to start season fast out the gate With veteran leadership coming back to the squad this season, this group of Mavericks have their eyes on the prize BOBBI PATRICK STAFF WRITER The Maverick men’s and women’s cross-country teams are pulling their horns out in their season opener in Sioux Falls, SD tomorrow in hopes of setting the tone for the rest of the season. Three months since Maverick track & field came to a close, the distance runners of
the women’s track team are ready to perform once again out on “I’m excited to finally race again. It’s hard being injured and watching others compete while not being able to,” said Josie Braaten, who is returning from a knee injury that costed her a lot of time participating in events last year. their top five runners, only losing senior Erin Baker, who was the top performer last season. Senior Lily Paul is one of the top returnees coming off an all-conference finish in the 10K in track and field and is looking to be one of the top runners for the team. “We only lost one of our top five girls and while we don’t have the same front runner, instead we have three upperclassmen that can take the reins at any time,” said Lily Paul. Carisa Weyenburg, one of the top five returners for the women’s team, was recently ranked as one of the top athletes to watch in the upcoming season in the Northern Sun Conference in a coach’s poll. The women finished 5th in the NSIC conference meet last year in Moorhead and are looking to better their postseason performances by reaching towards the goal of running at nationals. “Our bond as a team is so strong and we all have the same goal in mind. Nationals is not an impossible task for us, and the visualization we have during workouts can

help get there along with the talent on our team,” said Lily Paul. On the men’s side, Austin Pasch was ranked as one of the top athletes to watch in the NSIC this upcoming season. “Coming off my best summer of training, a full returning team, the addition of some talented recruits, and (Chris) Rombough’s continued unparalleled training, I can say I am excited to see exactly how good we can actually be this year,” said Austin Pasch. The men’s cross-country team finished 5th in the NSIC conference meet in Moorhead last year. NSIC 2ndteam all-conference runner Austin Yardley, feels confident in the season ahead. “I feel like we are prepared
and our team is ready. Rombough did a great job with our summer training so we can hit the ground running in our season opener,” said Austin Yardley. As for the road to nationals, the upcoming seasons are promising for both teams. “As to the ability of the team to go to nationals, I truly believe we have a team and a coach that can get us there. We need to stay healthy, push each other, trust Rombough’s training, and most importantly stay hungry,” said Austin Pasch. The squad looks to generate some buzz early this season, as they take their talents to Sioux Falls for their first meet of the season tomorrow, with the collegiate runners scheduled to race at 8:30pm.
Six tips to draft your fantasy football team in 2018 Sports editor Kevin Korbel gives his best tips to dominating your fantasy football draft this coming season
KEVIN KORBEL SPORTS EDITOR Well it’s that time of year again boys and girls! Fantasy football season is officially here in full-force! This coming weekend is the most common time across the nation that people will be drafting their fantasy teams. While I don’t have fantasy analyst as my job title, I’ve played fantasy football every year for the past seven years, which means I means you pick up a thing or two when drafting teams from year to year. Here are my six tips for the rookie, amateur, or elite fantasy owner I believe should take into consideration when drafting this season: 1. Pick at least one RB with your first two picks This year in fantasy, there’s a multitude of running back talent at the top of the draft.
If you have a top-4 pick in this year’s draft, you’re more than likely going to pick one of the four-headed monsters in this year’s draft, which includes Todd Gurley, Le’Veon Bell, David Johnson, and Ezekiel Elliott. But let’s say you get a pick lower than the 4th, do you take a chance on Antonio Brown, or do you take Saquon Barkley with that same pick? To answer this, I say yes! You’re not wrong with either of these two picks, if you capitalize with your second pick. If you pick Antonio, you can come back around a pick a player like a Leonard Fournette or a Dalvin Cook to be your RB #1. You could even go the Saquon route, then draft another running back and then go after like a Mike Evans or Doug Baldwin at wide receiver. Unless the name of the player is Antonio, Julio or DeAndre though, I’m usually a little hesitant drafting a wide receiver with my first pick in the draft. The first two picks make or break your team, and you need a good workhorse running back to depend on

While Rob Gronkowski (above) is a talented TE, owners should be beware when drafting him this season due to his extensive injury history. game in and game out. 2. Unless the value is good, don’t draft QBs or TE’s too early New England tight end Rob Gronkowski is being drafted as the TE1 in this year’s draft, as well as he should. In 14 games, he ended the season as the TE2,
behind only Travis Kelce. His ADP (average draft position) is near the mid-2nd round, early 3rd round range, which is just too high for ANY tight end to be drafted. To put the value of the tight end position into perspective, if you placed Travis Kelce’s numbers in the wide
receiver category for PPR leagues, he’d be only the WR10, behind players like Adam Thielen and Tyreke Hill. While this isn’t a terrible

A Grand Slam sibling rivalry Superstar siblings, Serena and Venus to meet in third round of U.S. Open
NEW YORK (AP) — Get ready for the latest Grand Slam installment of Williams vs. Williams. One big difference this time: The superstar siblings will be meeting in the third round at the U.S. Open, their earliest showdown at a major tournament in 20 years. Serena Williams set up the highly anticipated matchup at Flushing Meadows by hitting 13 aces and overwhelming 101st-ranked Carina Witthoeft of Germany 6-2, 6-2 in a little more than an hour in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday night. Hours earlier, across the way at Louis Armstrong Stadium,
Venus Williams did her part with another straight-set victory, eliminating 40th-ranked Camila Giorgi of Italy 6-4, 7-5. “Unfortunately and fortunately, we have to play each other. We make each other better. We bring out the best when we play each other. It’s what we do,” Serena said. “I think we’re used to it now.” When they play Friday, it will be their 30th tour-level encounter — plus, of course, all those times when they traded shots from across the net as kids in California, then on practice courts all around the world. It’s also soonest the sisters have played each other at any Grand Slam since

their very first tour match, all the way back at the 1998 Australian Open. Venus won that one. But since then, it’s been the younger Serena who’s grown dominant. The reason this match comes so early is that their rankings are not what they’ve been in the past. Serena is No. 26, playing in only the seventh tournament since she was off the tour for more than a year while having a baby. Even though the U.S. Tennis Association bumped her seeding up to reflect her past success, it still placed her at No. 17. Venus, meanwhile is No. 16. “It’s so young in the tournament,” Serena said. “We

would have rather met later.” She leads the series 17-12, including 10-5 at majors. Both have been ranked No. 1. They have won a combined 30 Grand Slam singles trophies, 23 by Serena. They own eight U.S. Open singles championships, six by Serena. They’ve played each other in the finals of all four Slams, including at the U.S. Open in 2001 (when Venus won) and 2002 (when Serena did). “It’s incredible what they’ve done. I mean, amazing really. Obviously there’s been other siblings that have had fantastic careers in tennis, but none anywhere close to what they’ve managed to
achieve,” said three-time major champion Andy Murray, whose first major since hip surgery ended with a fourset loss to No. 31 Fernando Verdasco. “I’d be surprised if anything like that ever happens again.” Defending champion Rafael Nadal followed Serena into Ashe and wasn’t really troubled at all, other than when he received a warning for letting the 25-second serve clock expire — something he figured was really his opponent’s fault. Either way, Nadal shrugged off that third-set distraction and finished off a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Canada’s Vasek Pospisil. Two other past men’s

FANTASY Continued from page 17 spot for a tight end to finish, tight ends have been losing value over the last couple of years. Kelce, Gronk, and Zach Ertz were the only tight ends to have more than 200 fantasy points in PPR scoring. 19 wide receivers alone in 2017 had over 200 fantasy points, including New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson. While you could argue from this stat alone that drafting one of these tight ends early would benefit you, think again. 3. DO NOT rely on consensus rankings Anybody remember Terrelle Pryor Jr. last year when he was with the Washington Redskins? He was drafted in the top 25 of drafts last season. Now, he’s going undrafted in just about every single league. About 50% of players that were ranked in the top 25 of players to draft in 2017 finished outside of the top 25. This included players like Jordy Nelson, Demarco Murray, and Dez Bryant. The consensus rankings are always skewed due to the amount of hype surrounding players. They fail to realize surrounding factors surrounding players, and because of that the consensus rankings every year always have players finishing worse than they have them ranked. Study up on player situations, including what type of target t players might take away from their production. 4. Don’t shy away from rookies
Last year was the year of the rookie tailback, three rookie running backs finished inside of the top 10 in points for running backs (Kareem Hunt, Alvin Kamara, and Leonard Fournette). Rookies coming in every year have been able to make an impact every season. Go back two years ago, Ezekiel Elliott took over the league as a rookie in 2016, and finished as one of the highest point scorers in the league. This year is one of the biggest years for rookie running backs in a long time. Players such as Saquon Barkley, and Rashaad Penny look poised to set the bar high for fantasy in 2018. If you run into a dilemma picking one of these players in the draft, don’t let the rookie label sway you away from doing that. 5. Opportunity > Talent I think that Sony Michel is one of the most talented running backs coming into the NFL this season. The combination of speed and strength make him a favorite to be a starter for his team this season. The one problem? He plays for the New England Patriots. While the Patriots possess one of the best offenses in the NFL, the starting running back every year is always changing, and this year is no exception. Sony Michel is in a very crowded backfield that includes Rex Burkhead, James White, Mike Gillislee, and Jeremy Hill. Last season, Mike Gillislee was the projected starter in New England,

He ended up finishing as the #53 RB in fantasy last year, behind players like Alfred Morris and Peyton Barber. What happened? Well after scoring four touchdowns in two weeks with the team, Rex Burkhead and Dion Lewis started to emerge in the offense. Because of this, Gillislee scored no more than five fantasy points in any game the rest of the way last year. Sony, while very talented, could see something like what Gillislee saw in 2017, with Burkhead and James White potentially stealing targets from Sony. Because of this reason alone, unless Sony becomes the clear lead back in New England, I’ll tend

to pick somebody with a clearer chance at a workhorse load, like a Rashaad Penny or a Derrius Guice over Michel. 6. You don’t win your league the day of the draft, but you can lose it For David Johnson owners last season, last year must have been tough week to week to try to squeak out a win, especially since

you more than likely spent a first overall pick on the guy in most snake drafts, which means you couldn’t pick next until the last pick in the second round. But, if you played the waiver wire throughout the season, you could’ve picked up various players in free agency last season, including players like Alvin Kamara, Alex Collins, Kenyan Drake, and Jerick McKinnon who had various weeks this season in which they played like RB1’s. Stay engaged in your leagues, observe the waiver, even attempt to trade with teams to have your best chance of winning! If you do this, I’m not promising you’ll win the championship in your league, but at least a fighting chance at the bare minimum playing spoiler in the playoffs. As you can tell from this article, there are many things to watch out for every step of the way as a fantasy owner. The most important part being in a league is to have fun, and if you at least take these things into consideration, you’ll be a smarter fantasy owner in 2018.
