Student Events Team hosts MAVFEST
INSIDE
Be prepared to get colorful this Thursday!
NEWS:
What’s the deal with Trump?
YUSEONG JEON Staff Writer The Student Events Team, a student-led organization at Minnesota State University, Mankato, will host ‘MAVFEST – Black Light Paint Party’ from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Library Lawn on campus. Participants of the event are suggested to wear white shirts because they will be sprayed with over 200 gallons of washable UV neon paint with four different colors orange, green, blue, and pink, all of which is environmentally friendly. The paint will wash out of hair and skin, although it can stain white shirts or any other light colored clothing. Paint will be being sprayed from above the dance floor by Student Events Team board members. Students will dance and party in paint under black lights that will make the paint glow and florescent, along with music performances. MAVFEST is a collaboration of different major pro-

grams. The Student Events Team combined Recognized Student Organization (RSO) Fair and the Outdoor Fall Concert to benefit both and boost the attendance for all the events that will happen on the same day. The RSO Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m on Thursday, Sept. 24. Anywhere from 50 to 60 RSOs will promote their organizations at the fair. Moreover, there will be student performers so that students can get involved in RSOs and entertainment. “It is really designed to maximize student involvement here on campus,” said

Bill Tourville, assistant director of Campus Programs at MSU. “It’s an opportunity for students to get involved outside of the classroom. We present all of those options on one day. It’s going to be amazing.” In the evening, there will be the paint party as well as performances of Party After Paradise and Scratch and Bang. Party After Paradise is a Mankato-based new local band and they go to Bethany Lutheran College. They will play pop and rock type of genre at the event. drummer Mike Bowers, will create an exhilarating and entertaining atmosphere on the stage by grabbing the audience’s attentions. According to the Student Events Team, they performed at MSU last year during the Welcoming Week. The performances at the MAVFEST will start by the Party After Paradise at 7 p.m. Scratch and Bang will perform at 8:30 p.m. and finish it off at 10 a.m. “I went through a lot of different artists locally and nationally, and I thought it would make more sense to invite local artists because a lot more people here know them than like a small town national artist,” said Rachael Winch, the chairman of the Concert Company Committee in Student Events Team. The admission for the event is free for students with Mavcard. For the event, shoes are required but food, drink or backpacks are not allowed. The Student Events Team is a student-led organization that produces fun, interactive, educational events for MSU students and celebrates Maverick pride with them. MSU’s International Student Volunteers program It’s more than getting experience for your resume.
JAMIE KANKAALA Staff Writer Have you ever wanted to participate in a truly life-changing experience while helping others in the process? The International Student Volunteers (ISV) program can help you accomplish that and much more. If a member from the program talked to you in one of your classes but you couldn’t make it to the meetings to learn more information, we can help you out! The following information is what you need to know to get started and how to apply for the ISV
has its own amazing advantages. The second two weeks of the trip is the adventure tour. Here you will tour your host country and experience incredible things like zip lining through the rain forest and scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef. Each country has its own fascinating list of activities for you to experience. Each person’s safety is ISV’s first priority. According to Jane Marino, the Student Care Coordinator, ISV has a global risk management plan, emergency routes, and medical facilities designed for each of their locations. The program is also highly supported by staff, Country Coordinators, and tour leaders to supervise each group. Volunteers will be called to a meeting in their host country, before the project begins, to go over safety precautions and be educated on any tools needed for their project tasks. ISV contact numbers
“In social community development, you will be helping deprived children and families by participating in things like educational programs, house and building construction, and taking part in basic health care projects. ” program. ISV has four-week programs in Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Thailand, the Dominican Republic, and South Africa. Each country has different volunteering opportunities. The first two weeks of the program is the volunteer project. Here you can chose between social community development or conservation projects. In social community development, you will be helping deprived children and families by participating in things like educational programs, house and building construction, and taking part in basic health care projects. In the conservation projects, you will get the chance to either help with rain forest regeneration or help with endangered species management where you will work with animals like cheetahs and elephants. Each project
will be provided to volunteers and their families in case of an emergency. However, ISV will not run a program or activity if they think it is unsafe. Jane Marino explains that safety is the top priority in all of their programs: “I can say this with complete confidence because I have personally been on four ISV programs and was beyond impressed with the way the volunteers were cared for (both emotionally and physically) at all times.” All students must fill out the online application and be accepted to the program to travel with ISV. By filling out the application there is no commitment to the program. This means that students can apply, wait to see if they are accepted, and then decide if they would like to participate in the program. If you aren’t sure when you would be able to go, don’t worry! ISV has

departure dates all summer long through early May to early August. The costs for the program are different depending on which country you decide to travel to. They range roughly from $3,900 to $4,500. If the costs seem a little steep for you, all you have to do is select that you are interested in fundraising on your online application. ISV will gladly help you out by providing you with a fundraising manual full of wonderful tips and ideas. Along with that, they will also send you
sample letters for your supporters just to make things easier for you. In your application you can also select if you would be interested in receiving academic credit for your participation in the program. You may then contact your academic advisor to go over your options. If you are interested in the ISV program feel free to visit their website at www.isvolunteers.org. Here you can learn more about which country you would be most interested in traveling to and what
specific programs they have. You can also look at more information about departure dates and costs on their website. All you have left to do now is fill out the online application and, if you’re accepted, ISV will send you all of the information you need to get started. So make your summer life-changing for yourself and others and apply to ISV today!

Higher education facilities taken to a new level Are new and improved campus facilities truly beneficial for students?
LUKE LARSON Staff Writer Campus is bustling with activity. In fact, it was busy even before students began arriving for fall semester. Construction on two big new facilities, a new cafeteria for the residence halls and a new clinical sciences building, has been in progress since this summer, according to an article by Rae Frame in an April edition of The Reporter. These two projects have a combined budget of around $47 million and are not the only upcoming construction projects planned for this year. This raises the question – or problem, rather – of facility expansion on college campuses. In the modern American
year of high school, I toured the University of Chicago. My family and I came away from that tour with the impression that we had just been shown our way around Hogwarts. I was enthralled. I also toured the University of Minneso-
“I feel that we the students, as a collective whole, oftentimes feel entitled to the best facilities and services. We want all the amenities of home in the dorms, we want nicely groomed sports fields, and we want upgraded buildings.” university system, the status quo is never enough. Everything on campus needs to be made bigger, better, and fancier. It has become an arms race between universities, always attempting to attract more students with the best possible facilities. Why complain? Everyone enjoys prettier buildings, cooler sports stadiums, and better technology, right? I know that I personally have a soft spot for pretty campuses. As part of my college exploration during my senior

ta and the University of St. Thomas, both relatively close to my home in St. Paul, and was very impressed, largely due to the magnificence of the buildings. The issue is that this facilities arms race is being funded in large part by students. The boggling rise of tuition rates should come as no surprise considering this culture of expansion in our universities. An editorial that ran in the Mankato Free Press on Wednesday cites a figure from the MSU website
which states that the average MSU student graduates with $23,000 in debt. This is simply too much. We need to be looking for ways to cut tuition costs, not spending money on more things. I believe that part of the problem is the students themselves. I feel that we the students, as a collective whole, oftentimes feel entitled to the best facilities and services. We want all the amenities of home in the dorms, we want nicely groomed sports fields, and we want upgraded buildings. But before we, say, complain about the lack of air conditioning in our dorm hall, perhaps we should first take a look at how much is already on our tuition bill for the current semester. I came into contact with this sentiment last year as a representative for the Residence Hall Association (RHA), the student government of the residence halls, which is tasked with the responsibility of suggesting ways to improve life in the dorms, which are then added to the room and board fees paid by students in the dorms. (The new $25 million dining hall, on that note, is also being funded by room and board fees.) Last year, nearly all of the suggestions were passed. It was very difficult to oppose, for example, softer toilet paper in the bathrooms for the sake of frugality without sounding like a scrooge. There was a sense that if something sounded like a good idea, it should be passed. The question was framed in the wrong way. No one is denying that cool new improvements can be made
to the dorms, and campus in general, but the first priority needs to be financial. Nicer facilities and amenities can’t be approved merely because they are nice, but because their value is worth the cost. All too often they are not worth the cost. I can’t comment in depth about the upcoming projects at MSU as I am not fully aware of the situation. Perhaps they are not good examples of the sort of unnecessary expansion on college campuses that I have discussed. I do believe, however, that the culture of constant expansion is a major issue for American universities and that we as a campus community should
examine the expansion projects that take place here to ensure that they are worthwhile and that tuition affordability has been the top priority throughout the process. Though I cannot make the most informed evaluation about whether MSU’s current projects and their respective price tags are reasonable, I believe that with all the construction on campus, it is an appropriate time to reflect on this modern issue in higher education. Let’s at least begin the discussion and start asking questions about how our tuition dollars are being used.

However, during the 2016 presidential campaign season we frequently find ourselves doing just that. be it via debate or research. Both parties’ candidates are under extreme pressure to portray the right image to the American people. The Democratic Party has yet to have an official debate; however, the first debate hosted by CNN is scheduled for Oct. 13 in Wynn Las Vegas. The Republican Party, on the other hand, has had two major debates thus far, one hosted by Fox News and the other by CNN. Though all candidates have a show of support and doubt, Donald Trump has certainly been one of the biggest talking points thus far in
the race for the White House. The phenomenon that is Trump has put the nation into a frenzy. As a student who genuinely cares about politics, I couldn’t help but form my own opinions about Trump. After much thought and debate, I realized that it is too early to clearly categorize him this early in the political season.

THEORY continued from page 6 Theory One: Let’s do this, GOP. Why after so many years of somewhat flaky political standings would Trump decide to plunge full force into the Republican scene at this time? My answer to this question leads me to my first theory: Trump is working with Republicans to boost morale. Whether you are a Trump supporter or not, you have to admit he has forced people into a conversation. His political inexperience also gives him somewhat of a free pass to say certain things that his competitors would never dream of saying without ma-
jor backlash. In a time where many Republicans are fed up with the Obama administration, it emotionally appeals to the party as a whole when he says things others are unwilling to say. In summary, if Trump is truly for the GOP, he is running to benefit the Republicans by boosting viewership. Theory Two: True Blue The second option gets a bit twisted. Another theory I have is that Trump is working with the Democrats. For example, Trump has a way of saying things that get people very angry. These things can tend to make the Republicans look racist, classist, sexist,
etc. This gives the GOP a bad image as opposed to other candidates who try their best to prove those stereotypes wrong. Another reason I am tempted to believe this theory is how he behaved at the first debate. When the candidates were asked if they would respectfully step down if they did not receive the GOP bid, Trump refused to do so. This would ensure a Democratic win seeing that the Republican Party would lose a great number of votes. Theory Three: It’s all about Trump Lastly, maybe Trump is running purely because he wants
to win the GOP bid and become the president. Let’s assume for a glorious moment that people are transparent and that Trump truly values GOP ideals. If this is true, the he is sincerely trying his best and contributing his ideas to make America better. He has been an arguably successful businessman throughout his life, and his views on saving America can appeal to some people. All in all, Trump certainly is interesting. Although I do not know what to feel about his intent just yet, I am excited about the upcoming election season and all that it brings. This being said, I would
encourage everyone to vote. I hear of many people who simply choose not to vote—I would not advise this. We as college students are the future of America. However, it’s better to vote intentionally for a candidate than blindly vote. If you have any interest in your future and the future of this nation, get to know the candidates for this upcoming 2016 election. Who knows? You may be the person to either open the door of the Oval Office for Trump or keep him out.
US announces $19 million dollars in grants for police body cameras The Department of Justice awarded $19.3 million in grants Monday to dozens of police departments seeking to start using body cameras but turned down a greater number of applicants hoping for federal aid to deploy the technology. The Justice Department said the grants will go to 73 police agencies in 42 states, helping purchase 21,000 cameras that officers wear on their uniforms to record interactions with citizens. More than 200 other police agencies that applied were passed over for funding for cameras, which are touted as a way to reduce the use of force and clear up questions about disputed encounters. Interest in the technology soared after a series of fatal encounters between police officers and unarmed civilians, beginning last year with the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. In all, 285 departments sought $56 million under the program, announced by the Obama administration in May. The department said that the 73 awards exceeded the 50 originally envisioned and that it added $2.5 million to enhance the grant funding available. “This vital pilot program is designed to assist local jurisdictions that are interested in exploring and expanding the use of bodyworn cameras in order to enhance transparency, accountability and credibility,” Attorney General Loretta
Lynch said in a statement. “The impact of body-worn cameras touches on a range of outcomes that build upon efforts to mend the fabric of trust, respect and common purpose that all communities need to thrive.” She said an additional $2 million would go to CNA, a nonprofit research organization, to provide training and technical assistance to departments and $1.9 million would be used to support research in Miami, Milwaukee and Phoenix on the impact on cameras, including community relations. Those receiving the largest awards of $1 million include Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Florida’s Miami-Dade County, Chicago, Detroit and San Antonio. Other winners include the two largest cities in Minnesota, Minneapolis and St. Paul, which each received the $600,000 they were seeking. Among the cities passed over were Des Moines, Iowa; Tallahassee, Florida; and Indianapolis. In addition to helping pay for the cameras, the initiative, known as the BodyWorn Camera Pilot Partnership Program, aims to help departments develop best practices to address the thorny issues that come along with them. Grant recipients must develop policies addressing when the cameras are turned on, how videos are stored and what can be done to balance privacy considerations with public access to mountains of footage they collect.
They will also be expected to keep statistics to assess the effectiveness of cameras during the two-year grant. It could still be several months before more beat officers in the winning cities have cameras. Local departments will be required to make a 50-percent match and may have to solicit competitive bids before buying them. Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges thanked the Obama administration for her city’s award, saying it would help transform its approach to policing. Departments passed over for funding say they may have to wait or scrape together local, state or other sources to start or expand programs. “It’s certainly disappointing,” said Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesman for the Des Moines Police Department, which had asked for $252,000 to help outfit over 200 officers. “Now we’re just going to have to look at our options. Do we roll it out in phases? Can we cut somewhere else to supplement this? We definitely don’t want to burden the taxpayers anymore, so we’re going to have to get creative.” President Barack Obama has proposed additional funding in the next two years to buy a total of 50,000 cameras. The Justice Department said other money would be available through its Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant.

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer Well, getting back on track didn’t take long! The Maverick girls are right back to their winning ways after their last two games. The Mavericks welcomed the University of Sioux Falls Cougars for the Pediatric Cancer Awareness game. The Mavs made it look easy by dominating the first period. They shot their way to six goals, the first came when junior Kiana Nickel scored from the top of the box. Freshman Morgan Cottew made her mark in the team’s hot start scoring two goals back to back. Teammates Emily Erickson and Maddy Smith helped Cottew with the assists helping pad the Mavs with an ear-

both scoring their first college goals off assists from Ali Schilling and Abby Hausken. Capping off an incredible first half Berutti got her second assist of the game when Jenny Hoerter pounded in a goal putting them up 6-0 headed into the half. Things slowed down quite considerably in the second half. Nickel scored her second, and what ended up being last goal of the game. The Mavericks won the game in a 7-0 shutout. Senior goalie Lauren Hoeppner played the entire first half likely pretty bored, as she had zero saves on a total of zero shots at her. Keeping that going in the second half Hoeppner chalked up her third shutout victory of the year. “It’s a good win for us. I think Any time you can get a lot of players a lot of minutes, especially us as young as we are to get players some real quality time is exciting,” Coach Bahl told Minnesota State Athletics. The clobbering would continue heading into the game with the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs on the 20th. Junior Dana Savino helped get the action going with an
assist to Nickel to put the Mavericks at a 1-0 lead. The goal was Nickel’s sixth of the season, giving her a tie for the team lead in goals. Savino would pick up another assist after Cottew picked up her first goal of the game. Cottew picked up exactly where she left off in to game prior while dominating the Mustangs. Cottew scored three goals, the last two coming late in the second half of action. Sophomore Abby Nordeen got credited with an assist for the first goal. “It felt great and I knew that we could score more, and then I got two more,” Cottew said when asked about scoring three goals. “I’m really excited about it.” These three goals also put Cottew up to six goals this season, tying Nickel for leading scorer. The Mavs won the game 4-0. Hoeppner posted her fourth shutout of the season after saving the only ball that was shot her way the entire game. Next up for the Mavericks are the Bemidji State Beavers. The Mavs will be traveling up there this Friday the 25th.

Volleyball comes back to beat Winona State The Mavericks got their first conference win after coming back to beat WSU in five sets.
KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The Minnesota State University, Mankato volleyball started off their season conference play with a huge win Thursday. The Mavericks squared up against NSIC rival Winona State at 7 p.m. in Bresnan Arena. The Mavs took the Warriors to five sets and each one turned into a back and forth brawl. After three sets Winona State went up 2-1, but the Mavs were not ready to give up. Winning the final two sets against the Warriors, which puts to their overall season record at 7-2. MSU was behind for half of the first set but two kills by junior middle blocker Krista Hassing turned it around. The Purple and Gold took the lead at 14-13 but were then plagued with a few errors. Winona State then committed a few errors themselves and the Mavs were back up 19-17, eventually finishing the first set 25-21. The Warriors however, were not even close to backing down. The second set was fairly even, with WSU taking the lead at 22-21. Hassing
drilled one more kill into the ground before WSU came back to win 25-22. Hassing tallied five kills during this set and would end the night tying her career high once again with 23. Junior Courtney Anderson and Sydney Geisness collected four kills each during the set. The Mavs came back swinging in the third set, getting ahead early 5-1. MSU lead through the first half but were over powered by WSU during the second half. The Warriors came back however. A few errors by the Mavs and several unanswered WSU kills cost MSU the match. The Warriors went up 2-1 going into the fourth set. Set four mirrored the first three sets with a battle for each and every point. Hassing gave MSU a much-needed spark with a huge kill to tie the set 22-22. WSU then recorded a hitting error and a service error leading to a set victory for the Mavs 25-23. With the match tied 2-2, both teams were ready to give their all for the last set. The score was tied 9-9 until the Mavs took an 11-9 lead. After that they didn’t look back. Freshamn defensive specialist Maddie Keute went back to the service line with the score at 14-11. She fired the serve, however it tipped the net. Fans in the Taylor Center were on edge as the ball barely went over the net, catching the Warriors off guard and falling to the

MSU football bullies Marauders The Mavericks posted their first shutout of the season, earning a 48-0 victory over University of Mary.
TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer As was stated the main focus for the entire game in last Thursday’s article, the Mavericks put their foot down on the pedal and never stopped. The game was completely dominated in front of their home fans at Blakeslee Stadium, as every side of the ball the Mavericks were moving in full speed. MSU recorded its first shutout of the season and first shutout since week 10 of last season when they blanked Wayne State University, 48-0. This was the first game this season the Mavericks were able to play at an excellent level throughout the entire game. Minnesota State wasted no time in the first quarter to get things moving. Not even three minutes into the game, junior quarterback Ricky Lloyd connected with sophomore wide receiver Ty Dennis for a 55 yard touchdown. Ty has now scored a 72-yard

For the rest of the first quarter, University of Mary was able to hold the Mavericks to only a field goal more, a 29-yarder from Alden Haffar, and the score was 10-0 after one quarter of play. The Marauders just could not muster much of anything on offense however, as the Mavericks defense was simply too stout to get any momentum
Minnesota State went on to add 10 more points before half time on a 36-yard field goal from Haffar, and a 38yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Nick Pieruccini to junior wide receiver Jameer Jackson. The score was 20-0 at the half, and it looked as if the white flag was already waving on the University of Mary sidelines with a half to play.
butter. They had outscored opponents 31-0 coming into Saturday’s game, and this one added onto their terrific stat. The Mavericks scored three touchdowns in the third quarter alone. The first was scored on a long drive that went six plays for 73 yards, ending with Pieruccini running the rock in from two yards out. The next score was a defensive touchdown, as senior cornerback Patrick Schmidt picked off Marauders quarterback Caleb Buck and ran it back 22 yards for the score. MSU scored its final touchdown of the quarter on senior running back’s Chad Zastrow 12-yard run to make the score 41-0 with 56 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Marauders were getting positive yards at times, but drives could never be finished in this game for them.
for the Mavericks, the second half was their bread and

“Minnesota State went on to add 10 more points before half time on a 36-yard field goal from Haffar, and a 38-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Nick Pieruccini to junior wide receiver Jameer Jackson. The score was 20-0 at the half, and it looked as if the white flag was already waving on the University of Mary sidelines with a half to play. ” Their top rusher Adam Woroniecki ran for 71 yards, and Buck finished with 137 passing yards on 21-of-34 passing. The Mavericks continued to hold the Marauders out of the end zone, and the purple and gold added one more touchdown with 5:03 remaining in the game. Zastrow rushed his second of the day in from two yards out; giving the Mavericks what would be their final score of the afternoon. The Mavericks won very decisively, 48-0. Sophomore quarterback Nick Pieruccini threw for 165 yards and one touchdown, as he also rushed for 66 yards and a score. Junior quarterback Ricky Lloyd had one of his better games this season thus far, as he recorded 137 yards passing and one touchdown. The running game from a running back standpoint was not solely about senior Connor Thomas this time.

“MSU was behind for half of the first set but two kills by junior middle blocker Krista Hassing turned it around.” Several Purple and Gold players stepped up for the team. Besides her 23 kills, Hassing also recorded two blocks and two aces. Anderson showed her strength at the net with four blocks. Geisness added 12 digs to her stat sheet and freshman Nevena Vukomanovich came off the bench to notch seven kills. Senior setter Ellie Van De Steeg continued to provide for the Mavericks as she tallied 55 assists and nine digs. Besides the match-winning ace, Keute collected 12 digs,
as did junior defensive specialist Rissi McNallan. The biggest milestone for the match went to junior libero Haley Fogarty. Fogarty recorded 24 digs during the WSU match, bringing her grand total for her time spent at MSU to 1,000 digs. With another year left who knows what number she’ll end with. The Mavericks battle Concordia University, St. Paul Tuesday in St. Paul. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
past the goal line. Overall, it was a pure mismatch on the field. The Mavericks totaled 575 offensive yards for the game, as the Marauders could not even
muster half of that, with 215. The rushing game comparison was divided by a gap wider than Michael Strahan’s two front teeth, as MSU won that 259-80. What is tru-
ly remarkable about these stats is the fact University of Mary only had the ball 90 seconds less on offense than the Mavericks. The Marauders had opportunities, but a game like this definitely shows how scary the Mavericks can be this season. The Mavericks will take a road trip to University of Minnesota-Crookston next weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM Saturday, September 26. The Golden Eagles enter the match-up 0-3 to start the season, as they have had the same struggles University of Mary has had to deal with. In their first three games, the Golden Eagles have been outscored 148-40. Mavericks are now 3-0 to start 2015, and have outscored their opponents 95-27. They continue their second half dominance in games, as they are yet to give up a score in the final two quarters.

WES HUNTINGTON Staff Writer Driver is one of those games that you either love or hate depending on how you feel it is a clone of a different franchise. However, it is one of those early PlayStation hits that, well, made a lot of money for Sony. The game was released on June 30, 1999 in North America and the rest of the world in 2000. It was initially released as Driver: You Are the Wheelman in North America, but for the purposes of this review, it is probably best to go by the title most people remember the game as: Driver. It was developed by Reflections Interactive (now a part of Ubisoft), and GT Interactive Software, a company long since defunct.

MARYSA STORM Staff Writer The following movies are must-sees for any psychology major out there. They’re also movies that will give you a hefty answer to the “and how does that make you feel?” question. You might want to have some tissues nearby for some of these.
A Beautiful Mind (2001) Ron Howard, after tackling the story of Apollo 13, took on A Beautiful Mind, a movie loosely based on the life of John Nash and inspired by a biography of the same name. Nash (Russell Crowe) received a Noble prize in economics later in life, seen at the movie’s end, but he also suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. The film does an excellent job of depicting Nash’s illness and the toll it took on his wife (Jennifer Connelly). The historical accuracy may be shady at times but that doesn’t take away from the good feelings you’ll experience in the end. A Dangerous Method (2011)

New information releases about upcoming films A look at recent rumors and announcements about three big films.
WES HUNTINGTON Staff Writer Many news tidbits have been circulating around Hollywood in recent days. Some tidbits about Star Trek Beyond, the Pacific Rim sequel, and other films have been coming out in recent days. Star Trek Beyond Release Date Delayed Two Weeks Originally planned for a release of July 8, 2016, Paramount Pictures announced Thursday that Star Trek Beyond, currently in production in Vancouver, had its release date shifted to July 22, 2016. The reason being is currently not official, but rumors are indicating that Warner Bros.’ adaptation of Tarzan had booked all of the IMAX theatres for that weekend. Unfortunately, this release date shift has allowed Star Trek Beyond to be in direct competition with the Ghostbusters remake (starring Melissa McCarthy among its cast), and the fifth Bourne film, with Matt Damon returning to the
usshaven.net role after a one film absence. Star Trek Beyond is currently in production in Vancouver – soon to be moving to Dubai for filming – and is being directed by Justin Lin from a script written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. In addition to the current cast, which includes Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Mr. Spock, Idris Elba has been added to the
Debate nets 23 million viewers GOP debate brought CNN largest audience in 35 years. NEW YORK (AP) — An estimated 22.9 million people tuned in for Wednesday’s second presidential primary debate on CNN. The Nielsen company said the viewership fell short of Fox News Channel’s 24 million for the first debate in August, but it still represented the largest audience in CNN’s 35year history. The previous high was the 16.8 million people who watched a “Larry King Live” episode in 1993 with Vice President Al Gore and Ross Perot.
The first two GOP debates have set new standards for interest in these contests. GOP frontrunner Donald Trump, suggesting he is the main factor in the ratings, said CNN donate advertising revenue to veterans group — a proposal the network never responded to. With interest high, the CNN debate stretched to three hours.
main cast, possibly rumored to play the villain in the film, which is being made to celebrate Star Trek’s 50th anniversary. Pacific Rim Sequel on Hold Indefinitely When Pacific Rim came out in 2013 and made more than $400 million worldwide, many expected to have a second film slated for 2017 under the title of Maelstrom, an-
nounced in 2014. According to many entertainment sites – The Hollywood Reporter and Yahoo News especially– the sequel has taken quite a turn. It was announced late last week that the Pacific Rim sequel has been put on hold indefinitely by Legendary Pictures, and that decision may have been pushed by financial issues. Pacific Rim took in more than $400 mil-
lion worldwide, but it cost nearly $200 million to produce the special-effects laden film. There is even speculation that the film may be canceled altogether. The entertainment site Comicbook. com states that even though Pacific Rim 2 may be delayed indefinitely, it may not be canceled, according to Guillermo del Toro, director of the first film. Independence Day Sequel Wraps Production and Gets an Official Title Back on August 22, the long-gestating sequel to the hit 1996 film Independence Day wrapped up production. During a special interview in the summer, a live event attended by director Roland Emmerich and most of the cast on hand to ask fan-submitted questions over social media, the official title for the sequel was announced as well. Independence Day 2 had finally gotten a subtitle for it. Independence Day 2 has now been officially titled Independence Day: Resurgence. Set twenty years after the original film’s events, the story deals with how the human race survives a second attack after the original invading force’s distress call is finally received. Independence Day: Resurgence is currently slated to hit theaters on June 24, 2016.

GAME Continued from page 19 named Rufus, Tanner goes on various missions that will take him through the cities of Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and finally back to New York City. The various missions in the four major cities have him escaping the police, stealing money in bank jobs and escaping, saving a presidential candidate, among others. Most of these missions are under a time limit, and you have to complete them with near-perfect accuracy. Driver is a lot of fun to play, however, there is one fault with this game. Unlike its sequels that were to follow, Driver does not feature on-foot action and that is a shame. It would have been nice to feature that, especially if you are in San Francisco when you go over the Golden Gate Bridge. However, they fixed that minor flaw when they released Driver 2 almost a year later. The music is top-notch and smooth and its mood ranges from quiet and peaceful to one of overall panic as you try

The rest of the overall game is excellent too. The cut scenes make you feel like you are watching a crime-dra-
PSYCH Continued from page 19 from this one. Starring Keira Knightely, Viggo Mortensen, and Michael Fassbender, A Dangerous Method charts the complicated relationships between Carl Jung, founder of analytical psychology, Sigmund Freud, who should need no introduction, and Sabina Spielrein, one of the first female psychoanalysts and former patient and mistress of Jung. It’s a provocative film – to say the least – and probably one of the worst movies you could watch on a date. Girl, Interrupted (1999) What does it really mean to be crazy? Girl, Interrupted, which takes place in the late 1960s, examines this question as it follows eighteen year-old Susanna Kaysen, a young woman who is checked into a psychiatric hospital following an apparent suicide attempt. Immediately after Kaysen arrives at the
hospital it’s apparent that she doesn’t belong there, but what should have been a few week stay turns into eighteen months as Kaysen befriends the other girls in the ward, including Lisa (Angelina Jolie), and indulges in her ambiguously defined illness. It’s a jarring, uncomfortable film and not one for the faint of heart. Fight Club (1999) “You are not special. You’re not a beautiful and unique snowflake.” Even if you haven’t seen Fight Club (which should be considered a crime), you should know the quotes and the fact that it’s, as the name would suggest, about a fight club. The movie is so much more than that though. It tackles themes of anti-materialism and corporatism, what it really means to live and (spoiler) split personalities. There’s a happy ending, but getting there is a
bumpy, psychologically twisted ride. The Fisher King (1991) The Fisher King opens with a radio DJ, Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges), going about his day like any other, until he makes an onair remark that promotes a murder-suicide, that is. This incident destroys Lucas’ career as a shock jock and his life. He becomes depressed and suicidal and then he meets Parry (Robin Williams), a crazed homeless man intent on finding the Holy Grail. It’s Parry who initially saves Lucas but once it is revealed that Parry, who used to be a college professor, lost his wife in the same murder-suicide Lucas instigated, Lucas is given an opportunity to save Parry and find forgiveness as well.

ma type of a movie and the gameplay is excellent too. The Survival mode is where the game really shines and
adds significant replay value. You are the driver on the run from the police, and you have to survive as long as you can against the cops. This game mode is especially fun when you have a group of friends together and they all try to vie for the top score, especially in the town of San Francisco, where the city is known for its inclines and declines of paved roads. One hit from a police squad car while you’re going down a hill in San Francisco and you can end up in no man’s land – meaning you can end up in a graphical limbo while you wait for your car to come down after being thrown up so high. If you own any of the three PlayStation systems, and haven’t picked this game up, do it now. The game is full on capable with the original PlayStation 3 model that was initially released in 2006, but not the revised, slimmer version.

Renowned ceramic sculpture artist to visit MSU Tip Toland to present artist’s lecture as part of Andreas Endowment Residency.
EMMANUELLE KOUAME Staff Writer Art connoisseurs, art majors, and art lovers across all genres, this is your event! The famous ceramic artist, Tip Toland, will present an artist’s lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 24 in Centennial Student Union 245. Tip Toland opens the series of three Andreas Endowment Artists in Residency this year at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Be aware, dear reader, that this article might be biased due to my insane admiration for Tip Toland’s artwork. Born outside of Philadelphia, the ceramic artist

Barry Friedman Ltd. states “The hyper realism of Toland’s figures comes from her attention to detail and unique use of materials. Using an encaustic technique, Toland creates a waxy finish for the skin that mimics real flesh. She even goes so far as to incorporate actual human hair into the works. The por-

Topics include concepts such as asymmetry, layering expressions, and subtle nuance, which can suggest so much with so little. The goal is to give voice to inner psychological states, or bring them to life, projecting aspects of humanity that create a felt response in the viewer. Toland will also be in residence on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 24-25 in the Nel-
