Grocery Trivia event comes to MSU This Saturday, a unique event debuts on campus.

mnsu.edu Grocery Trivia has hit many campuses around the country, MSU being the latest.

YUSEONG JEON Staff Writer

Grocery Trivia Night is going to be held from 10 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. Saturday at Carkoski Dining Hall. In the event, there will be diverse board games and trivia questions about groceries for the participants. Winners can take bags of groceries full of different types of food items home. The doors of Carkoski for the Grocery Trivia event will be open from 9:30 p.m. Before the event night, there will be three tabling events around the campus to promote the Grocery Trivia and distribute grocery giveaways to MSU students. The first tabling will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mav Ave, in front of the Lincoln

Statue, at the Centennial Student Union. The tabling in front of Carkoski Dining Hall will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday. For the students who might be hungry during dinner time, MAD (Mavericks After Dark) prepared some noodles and cookies for them. There is one more tabling from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Myers Field, right in front of the Bagel store. The volunteers of the tabling will also give brochures and some grocery giveaways such as lunch items to students to promote the event and encourage student participate on Saturday night. Furthermore, Stunt Monkey from the Mankato radio will volunteer to host the Trivia event and make it special. All the questions about groceries were provided by the specialized Trivia Company, SPORTCLE. This event is also the result of collaborations of MAD with

ASA (African Student Organization) and RHA (Residence Hall Association). These two recognized student organizations will help the event by doing board games for participants not playing trivia. ASA, as a multicultural student organization at MSU, will prepare cultural questions for the event. The board game they will provide includes the questions about which grocery is from Africa continent. If students get the right answer, they will get grocery prizes. RHA will also provide different board games for the participants to enjoy the event more. “This event is a mix of collaborations with multiple student organizations, IMPACT, my Mavericks After Dark team, and other business support. This is for students to interact, meet new peers, try something new, win something, enjoy, and make new memories,” said Rodolfo Correa, chairperson of MAD.

Trivia is an actual trend event across the United States. “Trivia is a trend right now, everyone can play it and certainly have a good night. Grocery Trivia Night is not a new idea, it is an activity played by many campus around the U.S., and this is just the first time bringing it to our student body to enjoy. Every college student appreciated free food/groceries, and it seemed like an attractive compensation for such event. ” Correa explained. “IMPACT’s goal is to provide students with innovative and educational activities throughout the semester. With MADs in particular I hope to bring create new memories and a good time. You won’t leave empty handed. There are over $1000 worth of prices, and a good time,” he continued. The event is also sponsored by Pub 500 and Hy-Vee. Pub 500 collaborated by donating some gift cards. A $30 Gift

Card donated by Hy-Vee. Grocery Trivia is the second event of Mavericks After Dark (MAD), which is under IMPACT, this semester. The MAD committee programs special late night events once a month. These themed events include free food, activities, games, bowling and billiards, collaboration with student organizations, and much more. The basic idea of the organization is, “The sky is the limit with this exciting committee.” “The MAD is a division of IMPACT that provides students healthy, alternative weekend events. The purpose of these events is to create new memories during your college experience,” Correa stated. Registrations for the Grocery Trivia event are available for team and individual participants.

Number of Syrian refugees hits new high BROOKE EMMONS Staff Writer

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) held a press briefing on September 23, addressing the current issue of Syrian refugees, mainly in Turkey. Melissa Fleming, the groups spokesperson, spoke at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. “More than 138,000 refugees, mainly Kurds, fleeing ISIS threats to towns and villages in the northern Syria crossed into southern Turkey since Friday (September 19)” said Fleming. With the growing strength of Islamic Extremist group ISIS, many Syrians are fleeing their homes to seek safety in refugee camps. Though it’s been said that refugee camps are an absolute last resort, as of today there are 3,034,259 total people of concern in the area, according to the United Nations. Last September, there were nearly 2,000,000 registered Syrian Refugees. That number

was a mere 200,000 in September 2012. These numbers would overwhelm even the largest countries. The neighboring states of Lebanon, Jordan also have refugee camps and are working on building more as well as expanding current stations in addition to the many in Turkey. Specifically, two new camps in Turkey are underway, Derik and Islahiye, with help from the UNHCR. The refugees first receive water and needed medical attention. Then they must pass through two checkpoints receiving health checks including measles and polio vaccination for younger children followed by registration. “Once registered, refugees receive an ID card, which provides access to free health care services in Turkish clinics, as well as other aid provided by local municipalities, non-government organizations and other aid agencies.” Fleming explained, “The card is a critical document that also shows refugees have the temporary protection of Turkish government.”

B S

asianews.it One of the many Syrian refugee camps, which have reportedly increased due to the conflict with ISIS.

UNHCR staff report that the majority of new arrivals are women, children and the elderly. Fleming said, “They’re exhausted after having walked several kilometers to safety on a dusty,

rough road, with their luggage. Some of the elderly and disabled are carried to safety by relatives, their wheel chairs hopelessly unsuited to the rough terrain.” Reports say more than 290

Syrians were taken to the Suruc hospital by ambulance over the weekend after arriving with dire injuries.

Obama seeks assistance in ISIS crisis BROOKE EMMONS Staff Writer

As the Islamic State crisis continues, President Obama’s stand on the situation continues to evolve. September 24, 2014, President Obama addressed the UN General Assembly in New York, NY. The United States, whose warplanes have increased their airstrikes against the Islamic State, seeks help in a drafted resolution aimed to intercept “foreign terrorist fighters.” The United States airstrikes are helping in the war against the IS, without placing American soldiers in ground combat. tThey have struck the Syrian cities of Aleppo, Kobane, Hassakeh, Raqqa, Deir al-Zour, Abu Kamal, and Al-Qaim. These cities are mostly in northern Syria on either the border of Iraq or Turkey, and in central Syria. President Obama 7explained, “The only language understood by killers like this is

the language of force.” It was only a year ago that President Obama addressed the UN General Assembly about the withdrawal of American soldiers from Iraq. Now, he says, “The terrorist group known as ISIL must be degraded and then ultimately destroyed.” President Obama opened his address saying, “This group has terrorized all who they come across in both Iraq and Syria”. Pleading with other countries to join the already 40+ country anti-IS coalition, he discussed the matters of the horrific crimes against humanity taking place. “Mothers, sisters, daughters, have been subjected to rape as a weapon of war. Innocent children have been gunned down. Bodies have been dumped in mass graves. Religious minorities have been starved to death. The most horrific crimes imaginable, innocent human beings have been beheaded with

videos.” The President urged nations to unite against the well-armed Sunni Muslim militants. Having gained a huge amount of territory in both Iraq in Syria, the group has grown extensively in a short amount of time. The IS also has a large sum of money behind them, making about $1.2 million a day off of black market oil sales. This, in combination with donors and ransom demands, have made them one of the richest terrorist organizations of all time. With larger sums of money, IS can attract a larger number of recruits. It is estimated the group will have $100-$200 million in surplus funds at the end of the year. To combat IS, the UN Security Council later adopted a binding resolution, Resolution 2178, requiring Foreign Terrorist Fighters (FTF) worldwide to uphold to a number of different measures in order to prevent further expansion and possible terrorist attacks. Some of these

include advancing airlines security, disarming and ceasing terrorists, and reaffirming the mission of all member states to help uphold the Rights of Humans. “No god condones this terror. No grievance justifies these actions. There can be no reasoning, no negotiation, with

this brand of evil.” President Obama said to the General Assembly, “So the United States will work with a broad coalition to dismantle this network of death.”

Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Centennial Student Union is once again sponsoring the 4th Annual Serendipity Karaoke Challenge at MSU this year. Serendipity Karaoke, which is part of the ongoing Serendipity Performance Series at MSU, will be held in the Maverick Bullpen. It will take place on Thursday nights, from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., unless noted otherwise. Lenny Koupal, CSU Communications Coordinator, has been a part of Serendipity Karaoke since its inception. “I started out wanting people to have a chance to sing or perform karaoke in a non-alcoholic setting,” Koupal said. “There are plenty of people who like to sing but can’t or don’t want to go to the bars.” All MSU students are allowed to participate in the event, and all singers are eligible to win a free Maverick Bullpen pizza at the end of the night. Weekly singing points are earned with the top point earners qualifying for the Karaoke Challenge Finals on March 19, 2015. Students do not have to attend every week to compete. Some of the top performers last year

were “late stragglers” according to Koupal. “We’ve had singers in the past who didn’t show up until later in the year, but still made the final competition,” Koupal said. “They were so good at performing that they were able to score a lot of points.” Everyone who performs automatically gets points towards the final show. Extra points can be given for costumes worn, dance numbers, and getting the crowd to participate. At the end of the year, the ten highest scoring singers will perform for judges. “We usually give out a tablet or iPad type device to the winner,” Koupal said. There will be twin big screen-projectors for both singers and the audience, who get to enjoy the show with comfortable lounge seating. The song list also includes more than 6,000 songs, and has been updated to include some of the most recent hits. “We do take requests too,” Koupal said. “If you look through our songs and don’t find what you’re looking for, we will try to find the song for you.” Serendipity Karaoke is just one part of the Serendipity Performance Series on campus. Other activities include Stomper Cinema, which plays movies on

Nearly Naked Mile to be Homecoming’s kick-off PRATAKSHYA BHANDARI Staff Writer

Homecoming week is finally here, and IMPACT is earning some goodwill points with a charity run to kick-start the spirit of Homecoming. The official Homecoming kick-off is scheduled at 7 p.m. at the Performing Arts front lawn on September 29. Guest speakers include MSU President Richard Davenport, MSSA President Mariah Haffield and Mankato Mayor Eric Anderson. The Nearly Naked Mile run is scheduled at 8 p.m., set to follow the royalty and team introductions as well as the banner presentation. Runners will begin the race at the Performing Arts front lawn, and begin donating the clothes they are wearing during the course of the race. Volunteers from PRSSA and IMPACT will be stationed to pick up these clothes, which will be donated to local charities including but not limited to Again Thrift Store and Goodwill. Digital T. will play live music

during the event to encourage runners to keep up the enthusiasm. There will be food and refreshments provided after the event. Homecoming kick-off is the official beginning of Homecoming week 2014. Homecoming is organized by the Homecoming Committee, which is part of IMPACT, the Student Activities Board. Homecoming has been an MSU tradition since 1928 and every year towards the end of September, the city of Mankato braces for the spirit of Homecoming. No one is as excited as the team of IMPACT, especially Homecoming Chairs David Schieler and Desiree Frederick, who have been working all year to put together the best one yet. “We have been planning for nine months and it is finally happening. I am excited, and hope that students will enjoy homecoming week,” said Homecoming Chair David Schieler. In the past, the race has been organized by The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). Even though IMPACT is organizing the race this year, as part of homecoming kick-off, PRSSA is helping out by volunteering at the event. “This is a great way for

students to give back to the community while getting exercise, it’s really going to be a fun event,” said IMPACT Public Relations Chair and PRSSA Vice President Samantha Terning. The race is free for everyone to attend, there is no registration or fees required. While the anticipation of Homecoming itself is enough to get people excited for events, the

Nearly Naked Mile is creating some curiosity. “Are people seriously going to take off their clothes? That sounds interesting. I might have to attend just to see what it is all about,” said Business Marketing major Hallie Gleixner. Some students weren’t aware of the race but weren’t hesitant to mark their calendars after hearing about the fun concept.

“We are excited for the Timberwolves’ Dunks After Dark. My roommate is going and so am I,” said Construction Management major Greg Jurgens. “But the race sounds cool too, we might attend the kick-off now,” he said.

Alaskan anchor quits on air Reporter reveals she owns marijuana business, will push for legalization. ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A television reporter quit her job on live TV with a big fourletter flourish after revealing she owns a medical marijuana business and intends to press for legalization of recreational pot in Alaska. After reporting on the Alaska Cannabis Club on Sunday night’s broadcast, KTVA’s Charlo Greene identified herself as the business’s owner. “Everything you’ve heard is why I, the actual owner of the Alaska Cannabis Club, will be dedicating all my energy toward fighting for freedom and for fairness, which begins with legalizing marijuana here in Alaska,” she said during the late Sunday evening newscast. “And as for this job, well not that I have a choice, but f--- it, I quit.” She then walked off camera. KTVA News Director Bert Rudman apologized for Greene’s “inappropriate language” and said she was terminated in statements Sunday. He apologized again Monday, this time for Greene’s ethical lapses. “She had a personal and business stake in the issue she was reporting, but did not disclose that interest to us,” Rudman said in a statement. “At KTVA we strive to live up to the highest journalistic standards of fairness and transparency. Sunday’s breach

of those standards is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated,” he said. Greene is the professional name used by Charlene Egbe. She told The Associated Press on Monday that she knew about a month ago that she would be leaving the way she did. No one else at the station knew anything about it, she said. Alaska voters will decide in the November election whether to join Washington and Colorado in decriminalizing pot. Greene doesn’t believe the manner of her departure is harming her cause. “Are we talking about it, or not, because of what I did. Period,” she said. “It always goes back to the issue.” Greene, 26, said she always fact checked and was unbiased about the issue as a reporter. “I’m passionate about doing my job, and at the time my job was being a journalist,” Greene said. Alaska business records indicate Egbe registered the Alaska Cannabis Club name on April 20, or 4-20. The number “420” has long been associated with marijuana, though its origins as shorthand for pot are unclear. Taylor Bickford, a spokesman for a group backing the measure to legalize pot, said he hopes Alaska voters look beyond Greene’s salty language.

“I hope that her language, which clearly was not appropriate for television, doesn’t distract from the importance of her message,” said Bickford, with the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol. After voters approved the use of medical marijuana in 1998, the state of Alaska never set up dispensaries, forcing people to criminalize themselves to access pot, he said. Passage of the initiative “would allow them to access the medicine they need,” Bickford said. A spokeswoman for the opposition group Big Marijuana Big Mistake said it has twice complained to KTVA management about what it claimed was Greene’s biased coverage of the ballot initiative. “While we are frustrated with these actions, we are further disappointed by this distraction from what needs to be a full and honest debate about a dangerous initiative that will hurt Alaska’s communities and kids,” Kristina Woolston said in a statement. During a Monday news conference, the group outlined concerns it had with Greene’s

reporting, including an Aug. 15 email from Kalie Klaysmat, the executive director of the Alaska Association of Chiefs of Police, which also opposes the marijuana initiative, asking Rudman to change reporters. “She seemed only interested in information that supported her point of view. She did not explore contrary information; she attacked it,” the email states. “That she seems to be the primary reporter covering

marijuana issues and has such a strong personal opinion on this very divisive topic causes me to question the station’s editorial judgment.” “Alaskans should feel as if they had been disrespected, not only because of the use of the F word, but also because they did not receive fair and balanced reporting on this very important issue for our future,” said another spokeswoman for the group, Deborah Williams.

Glow Fun Run to eliminate MNT 5k will benefit the Eliminate Project. HANNAH KLEINBERG News Editor

This Friday, September 26, MSU’s Circle K club will be hosting the Glow Fun Run. The run will benefit the Eliminate Project, which works toward eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus. Also known as MNT, this is a rampant disease that makes many children its victim. Statistiscally, it kills one baby every nine minutes, or 160 newborns every day. This is the third year Circle K has held a run to help the Eliminate Project. Emily Schaffer, president of the Circle K club, feels strongly about this run and what it stands for. “I think it’s a great cause,”

she explained. “Many people are unaware of MNT and what it does. I love raising awareness and I hope to get more people involved.” President Schaffer said that much of the proceeds would go toward the Eliminate Project. The rest of the money will be used to pay for business costs of holding the run. The first 50 runners will receive a complementary t-shirt and a glow sticks. In respect to the name, runners will don themselves in glow sticks and other glow-themed apparel. Glow sticks will be dispersed throughout the run, and be available for all participants to grab. MSSA, 9/24 Student senate meets to discuss College Town, task forces, other announcements. BROOKE EMMONS Staff Writer The MSSA meeting on September 24, 2014 covered the following topics: task forces, Agile Grad, College Town, and various announcements. Reports began with the senator from graduate studies. He has been involved on a discussion board with four task forces, specifically the research scholar and creative activity group. This involves working to find how research and creative activities are being engaged with students and faculty and finding room for improvements. After discovering needed improvements, the focus group creates recommendations to solve the issue that all vary in time length. After making the recommendations as concrete and as bold as possible, the group will submit them to the board for review. The group was formed early this year, and is in the process of starting back up this fall. Town Hall Tuesday academic planning committee is continuing work on developing a program called Agile Grad. This

program will allow students to create a four-year plan that shows future availability of classes. Scheduling will run more efficiently and students will have a greater chance of graduating in four years. This tool will be used every semester while students attend MSU. Currently in phase three, the program will release at phase six with a “Three year plan.” Next year is the accrediting year for the university, so this will be a great asset. MSSA is excited about this and believe it will be good for both students and professors. A motion was brought to the table concerning College Town, the off-campus housing community. Students are becoming vocal with their feelings about new rules at the cottages. Their complaints involve checking visitor’s bags, residence needing to meet visitors at the entrance, and security becoming harsher. MSSA Off-Campus Senators would like individuals to generate some involvement and to hear input from students who live in College Town. The resolution states, “whereas the

Tokyo Game Show “It’s never been a better time to be a gamer.” MATTHEW EBERLINE Staff Writer

Japan’s annual Tokyo Game Show (TGS) took place this past weekend, showcasing a ton of new and exciting games, many of which have yet to be confirmed for western release. Here’s a rundown of some of the biggest titles at this year’s TGS. Sony kicked things off earlier this month with a pre-TGS press conference, detailing a number of games for the PS4 and PS Vita. The conference began with a focus on the Vita, showcasing several new games, as well as some previously announced titles. Phantasy Star Nova, an action-role playing game (RPG) announced at last year’s conference, released a new trailer showing off the game’s combat and gameplay, as well as a pleth-

ora of character customization options. Phantasy Star Nova will release for Japan in Novem-

reveal a new Vita game called Zodiac, a Japanese-style RPG (JRPG) in development by a

team of former Final Fantasy developers. The game combines design elements from eastern and western RPGs to create a new and original experience. Expect Zodiac to ship worldwide sometime in 2015. Sony’s PS4 lineup was considerably larger, showcasing a multitude of games, including titles already released in the west, such as Destiny and Oddworld: New ‘n Tasty. As expected, Sony showed off their most anticipated new releases, with trailers for Batman: Arkham Knight, Battlefield: Hardline, Bloodborne (confirmed for release on February 6), The Crew, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Far Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (now confirmed for release in 2015), Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Persona 5, and The Order: 1886.

Mankato singer dares to dream Following Coffee Hag performance, winner of local competition will compete in St. Paul sing-off. CHELSEY DIVELY Staff Writer

The Coffee Hag hosted the Minnesota Sings Competition this past Friday, where an array of participants exposed themselves on stage (vocally) to a room full of strangers. The winners are to be congratulated, but there were many memorable performances and moments throughout the evening. It’s important to make a song your own, which can be difficult; the performer of “Let it Go” possessed a lovely voice, but the dubstep rendition of the track seemed to distract from her talent. Her voice was masked by the electronic sounds and it seemed to throw her into clubbing mode rather than remembering lyrics mode—if you get too caught up in shaking a groove and forget your lyrics, it might not be a good choice for singing. For a few, backing vocals also proved problematic because they were too loud and threatened to cover up the performer’s voices. Some exhibited a professional level of confidence while oth-

ers appeared lost and separated from their natural habitat. The last performer of the evening exhibited wonderful stage presence and wasn’t afraid to make eye contact with the audience;

but could have improved his movements. When performing on stage you must fully commit to an action—it’s scary, but that intent leaves a lasting impression.

HOMECOMING “The theme for this year is

“The Best One Yet”, hopefully without a riot and car bonfire in the Highland Hills parking lot that marked homecoming in 2003.” continued from 9 King and Queen candidates at 11 a.m. in the MSU Mall. Later that day there will be a Dodgeball Tournament, no wrenches please, in Myers Field House at 7 p.m. Wednesday you have the option of enjoying an assortment of free food. Let’s be honest, for the poor and starving college students, the real inclination for showing school spirit is the free food involved. The ice-cream social goes from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. with a food-eating contest at noon. Thursday proves to be the day for entertainment with the

Greek’s annual Lip Sync competition and the Theatre Department’s first performance of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. As Billy Mays would say, “but wait there’s more!” The purple and gold explosion continues through the weekend, so be sure to leave town if you have any desire for sleep or take naps in the 3rd floor of the library, because our campus will be booming with the homecoming concert come Friday. Those of you awake on Saturday morning can participate in the Alumni 5k or free pancakes and the homecoming

parade with our new and improved marching band! And it wouldn’t be homecoming without sweaty men tackling each other over the old pigskin. This year we play Southwest Minnesota State at 2 p.m. in Blakeslee Stadium. On Sunday, the events conclude with a bonfire behind Blakeslee Stadium. Enjoy your events whether they are on or off campus, but remember if you participate in private events off-campus, be safe and considerate of those around you.

3rd place went to Evan Masters, who received a $25 iTunes gift card. 2nd place went to Tess Erickson who received a $50 iTunes gift card.

And last, but certainly not least, 1st place went to Erika Dobe. Erika is a local high school student who performed the song “I Dreamed a Dream,” chosen because of how relatable she found the piece to be to her own life: “I have learning disabilities, so I can relate to having dreams that seem too farfetched.” Erika was critical of her abilities, fearing she didn’t open her jaw enough to get a clear sound with her vowels, but was very positive as to how she hit the notes during her performance. Erika, who also participates in her high school’s concert choir and a capella chamber sings, was surprised and happy to be proclaimed the winner and says she will use the opportunity to perform in the cities as a chance to launch her lifelong dream of being a professional performer: “I’ve wanted to sing ever since I learned people could get paid for it!” The final round where Erika will compete is in St. Paul on September 28th. Tickets can be purchased online at www.minnesotasings. com.

Mexican grill on Monks Burrito Wings focusing on the details. RAE FRAME A&E Editor

Mankato’s food scene is always changing, and something new is always around the corner. A few of us at the Reporter paid a visit to Burrito Wings, the new, family-run restaurant just off campus. Burrito Wings is dedicated to authentic, quality food, the décor is simple and streamlined with splashes of orange, and the television is turned to Hispanic news and sports channel. An entire wall of the building is dedicated to the history of burritos—this place is packed with fun ideas and it is clear that the

Perhaps the most exciting news from Sony’s TGS event was the reveal of a brand new trailer for Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XV, which introduced the game’s main characters as they drive a car through a countryside populated by dinosaurs and other strange creatures. Surprisingly, Square Enix seems to have dropped the series’ classic turn-based combat system in favor of a more cinematic and action-based realtime experience. Final Fantasy XV will release worldwide on next-generation consoles, however, a release date has not yet been officially announced. Sony did confirm, though, that a demo for the game will be released sometime early next year, and will contain enough content for three-to-four hours of playtime. Fans of the Dragon Ball Z series will be happy to know that a new Dragon Ball game is on its way. Dragon Ball Xenoverse will allow players to create their own custom characters as they travel through time to fix the series’ altered timeline and return it to normal. Dragon Ball Xenoverse is set to release for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows in 2015. While Nintendo’s lineup of games wasn’t nearly as large

as Sony’s, they did bring the new 3DS models for the public to try, as well as a new Monster Hunter game for the 3DS called Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. The game is an updated version of Monster Hunter 4 and is set to release in Japan this fall and internationally in 2015. In contrast to Sony and Nintendo, Microsoft barely made an appearance at TGS, with a single booth where visitors could stop by and try some of the different games offered for the Xbox One. While this is in stark contrast to Microsoft’s powerful appearances at other conventions, this isn’t unusual for the TGS as the Xbox consoles have always struggled against Sony and Nintendo on the Japanese market and the Xbox One just released in Japan earlier this month, almost a year after its release in western markets. While the Tokyo Game Show isn’t as big of an event for western audiences as E3, PAX, or Gamescom, there are still plenty of new games and announcements to whet gamers’ appetites as we move closer to 2015. It’s clear next year will be a huge year for games, possibly the biggest in quite some time, proving that there’s never been a better time to be a gamer.

details really matter here. Like the name suggests, Burrito Wings features Mexican cuisine with an unexpected twist—wings. Wings here are offered in 8 and 14 piece, with a choice of Buffalo, Adobo, Teriyaki, and Habanero sauces. Our wing-man opted for a burrito, but we will be returning in the near future to give them a try. The menu is bold and simple with popular dishes, a kid’s menu, and a drink menu that includes Mexican sodas and Margaritas (Mango, Strawberry, Raspberry, and Peach). We’d heard the mango pico de gallo was to die for, turns out it was only one of several delicious additions that you don’t see on all menus. Cilantro and onion

pico de gallo, cheese dip, the famous mango pico de gallo, and a variety of hot sauces that caught me off guard but were perfect for the rest of the group. Despite the quiet opening last week, there was already a constant flow of customers throughout the lunch hour, some who were visiting for the third day in a row, others who were new like us. We spoke with Evan and Matthew, first time customers, who both liked the atmosphere of the restaurant and its devotion to customers. “It’s more local, there are chain restaurants everywhere, and here they seem more interested in what we think,” said Evan. “If you want to try something, you just ask and they’ll

give you a sample.” While most of our group had opted for soda or water, Matthew approved of the drink selection. “They’re better than you can get at most bars,” he said. Dictator, Lohan take on gaming industry

The Kiss

Activision joins scrutiny for slanderous in-game portrayal.

WWII statue to visit France

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is joining a video game company's legal fight against disgraced Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, who is suing Activision over his inclusion in one of its popular "Call of Duty" games. Activision Blizzard Inc. announced Monday that Giuliani and his firm will ask a Los Angeles judge to dismiss Noriega's lawsuit, which claims his likeness was used without permission in 2012's"Call of Duty: Black Ops II." Giuiliani told The Associated Press he took the case because he doesn't want the imprisoned Noriega to profit from his crimes, which include convictions for murder, drug trafficking and money laundering. Also, Giuiliani said that if the lawsuit is upheld, it could give historical figures and their heirs veto power over their depiction in books, television, movies and video games. Noriega sued Activision in July, claiming the company depicted him as a "kidnapper, murderer and enemy of the state." "I am outraged that he is seeking millions and millions of dollars that he can take down to a Panamanian prison from a great American company," Giuliani said Monday. "Noriega going after 'Call of Duty,' you should think of it as Osama bin Laden's family going after 'Zero Dark Thirty,'" he said. The lawsuit contends Noriega's inclusion in the game

increased Activision's profits from "Black Ops II." The game earned more than $1 billion in sales within 15 days of its release. Noreiga's attorney William T. Gibbs declined to comment on Giuliani's statements. In addition to leading New York City's government for two terms — including during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks — Giuliani is a former U.S. attorney and ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. In private practice, Giuliani worked as a First Amendment lawyer, representing major news outlets such as the Wall Street Journal and the financial magazine Barron's. "This is an area of the law that brings me back to my youth," Giuliani said. Activision said in a release announcing Giuliani's involvement in the case that the company plans to argue the game's depiction of Noriega is covered by free speech provisions. The company noted its games have featured historical figures such as President John F. Kennedy and Fidel Castro. The story line for "Black Ops II" involved the waning years of the Cold War in the 1980s, with Noriega aiding the game's key villain. The exdictator appears in less than 1 percent of the game and was not featured in any of its marketing, Giuliani said. In real life, Noriega was toppled in 1989 by a U.S. invasion and served a 17-year drug trafficking sentence in

the United States. He later was convicted in France of money laundering, and that country repatriated him to Panama in December 2011. Noriega, 80, is serving a 60-year sentence for murder, embezzlement and corruption. He has had health issues in recent months and has been treated for high blood pressure, flu and bronchitis. His family also has said he has a benign brain tumor and heart trouble. Activision has faced lawsuits before over its use of well-known people in its video games. The band No Doubt sued the game maker after learning their digital avatars in "Band Hero" could be used to perform other artists' music. The band settled the case before trial, and terms were never disclosed. Activision is still fighting a case filed by Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose, who contends the company violated an agreement not to feature guitarist Slash or his band Velvet Revolver in "Guitar Hero III." A judge dismissed the case, but it is on appeal. Lindsay Lohan is suing the makers of "Grand Theft Auto V" claiming a character in the game is based on her. Take Two Interactive Software Inc. has asked a Manhattan judge to dismiss the case and has accused Lohan of filing the suit to attract publicity.

CAEN, France (AP) — A sculpture honoring a photograph of a kiss in Times Square that captured New York's celebration as World War II ended has gone up in Normandy for a one-year visit. Cranes and construction crews in the French city of Caen on Tuesday hoisted and locked together pieces of "Unconditional Surrender," an 8-meter (25-foot) cast-bronze sculpture in color of a sailor and a nurse in a lip-locked embrace. The sculpture by Seward Johnson is based on a U.S.

Navy photographer's black-andwhite snapshot taken Aug. 15, 1945, according to the Sculpture Foundation, a U.S.-based nonprofit that owns the work. It also resembles a famous photo taken by Life magazine's Alfred Eisenstaedt on that day. The sculpture is to spend a year outside the Caen Memorial, a museum focusing on World War II.

Mavericks suffer fourth loss of season After gaining some momentum in the NSIC, the Mavericks were stumped by Winona State. LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer

Trevor Cokley • MSU Reporter Sophomore Krista Hassing had 13 kills and three digs in the Maverick’s 3-0 loss to Winona State Tuesday.

The MSU Volleyball team lost in straight sets to a talented Winona State club in Winona on Tuesday. The loss drops the Mavericks to a 7-4 (3-1) record, while Winona State moves to a 7-1(4-0) record. The Warriors had it rolling in the first set, as they were able to get control of the match early, taking a 3-0 lead. They then used a 5-1 run to increase their lead to five. The Mavericks were unable to making any runs in this set, getting back-to-back points only twice throughout the match. With WSU leading 15-9, the Mavericks were able to bring the set within third, with backto-back kills by Jenna McNallan, making the score 15-11. The Warriors then used a 6-2 run to put the set at 21-13. MSU tried to make a push late in the set, but the Warriors ultimately came out on top, winning 25-18. Set two rolled around and the

Mavericks came out tough. Trailing 10-7, the Mavericks were able to take the lead and some on a 7-0 run, making the score 14-10 mid-set. WSU countered with a three-point run and bring the score within one. MSU got a huge run 3-1 run late in the set and took a 19-21 lead. WSU calmed the storm by calling a

Dennis Amundson

timeout, setting them up on a 5-1 run, and giving them a 24-22 lead, and the set 25-23.

With the Mavericks down 2-0 in the set, they knew they had their work cut out for them. MSU opened the game on a 3-0 run, and a couple of Warrior errors helped extend their lead to four. Krista Hassing went back-toback by herself, and increased the lead to seven, making the score 16-9. Winona State was able to get nine of the points back using a 12-3 run. WSU used that run to take the lead, 23-21. MSU used a kill by Hassing to tie the score at 24. The Warriors though, were able to close the door and end the match on a quick two-point run. Hassing led the team with 13 kills, and Honebrink tossed in six kills of her own. Ellie Van De Steeg led the team with 30 assists. Haley Fogarty led the team with 12 digs, and Honebrink was second with nine. MSU makes the trip to North Dakota to take on Minot State on Friday, with a 7 p.m. start, and then takes on University of Mary on Saturday. That match starts at 5 p.m.

National League Awards: Wiita’s Picks TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer With the weather getting frigid and the leaves changing colors, we are entering the homestretch of the 2014 MLB regular season. The battle is on for not only playoff races, but individual awards as well. Here are my predictions for the National League winners this season. MVP: Giancarlo Stanton, Marlins OF There can be a lot of arguments for this award this season. Clayton Kershaw is a popular guy to bring up for the award, but in my opinion pitchers have their own award. It should stay that way because there is no way at all you can compare a pitcher who has been in 30 games compared to an everyday player. Even with the season ending injury occurring to Stanton when he was hit by a pitch in the face in early September, his numbers are hard to not appreciate. He is the NL leader in homeruns with 37 (six ahead of the next guy), second in RBI with 105, second

in On Base Percentage and leading in Slugging Percentage and On Base Percentage Plus Slugging Percentage. The next guy to be mentioned for the MVP is Andrew McCutchen. Stanton deserves the award because this was a season he has put it all together. His defense continues to improve and his batting average has increased as he has put the ball in play more. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Billy Hamilton, Reds OF The speedy Hamilton made a big impression at the show this year, and perhaps the Reds have found their long-term centerfielder. Leading all rookies in games played, runs, hits, doubles, RBIs and stolen bases, Hamilton has shown speed that is on an island of it’s own with Dodger’s second baseman Dee Gordon. It’s not only the stats that can capture the eye about this 24-year-old, but his defense and smart base running changes games. There have been times where on a wild pitch, Hamilton

will be from first to third base by the time the catcher retrieves the ball. His defense is also an asset as he can chase down any ball in

the gap with ease. Not only that, but his arm is a cannon. He looks to have a bright future here in the big leagues, and we can only ex-

pect more from him next season. CY YOUNG: Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers Need I say anyone else? Hon-

Fantasy Football Frenzy: Sleepers & Busts which the quarterback threw for three touchdowns and 346 passing yards. This past recent week however didn’t go well as only 162 passing yards and 1 touchdown was accounted for against the Detroit Lions. The question is: will his inconsistency continue? The next five weeks are at Chicago, home against Minnesota, at Miami, home against Carolina, and on the road versus New Orleans. Those are going to determine what this quarterback has in store for the season, and I would suggest keeping him as your starting quarterback for now. 3. Eddie Lacy, Packers RB With the former Alabama Crimson Tide standout being a part of the huge offensive plans the past two seasons, it should scare owners who took him high in the draft at this point. With Lacy only accumulating 109 total rushing yards in three weeks with and an average of 3.3 yards per carry, that is alarming by itself. Lacy is flat out not living up to the big expectations everyone was hoping for. The Packers have been known for their passheavy attack as well, so how long should you keep Lacy around? Time will tell if he can turn it around. A suggestion: seek out some trades and the waiver wire, just to be safe. 4. Reggie Bush, Lions RB As the saying goes, “A blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.” Is this the theme to be aware of with Reggie? He has basically filled a role as a receiver now, as Joique Bell has had twice

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer With the 2014 NFL Fantasy Football season underway, there’s a lot that can be said about injuries and suspensions. With players like Adrian Peterson, Ray Rice and Josh Gordon, the league is facing more and more suspensions than ever before. This is causing some fantasy owners some headaches, but there are always alternatives to make up for injuries, suspensions and players not living up to the hype. BUSTS 1. Jamaal Charles, Chiefs RB Just like Peterson, you should be mindful that there’s plenty of season left to turn it around for the Kansas City running back. He was a projected top-three pick this year in most drafts, so it’s hard to believe Charles will continue averaging four points a game. His recent ankle injury should concern owners however, as he may be out or limited the next few weeks to follow. After he returns however, it is difficult to imagine him having any problems regaining his form. 2. Aaron Rodgers, Packers QB Not only is the 2011 MVP on one of my fantasy teams this season (in which I’m 0-3), but Rodgers being inconsistent as he has been so far is a concern for everyone. Yes, he played the Seahawks the first week and struggled as predicted. Week two it was a home opener against the Jets, in

fansided.com Eddie Lacy (27) only has 113 rushing yards and has failed to score a touchdown in the first three games of the 2014 season.

as many carries than Bush has. His first two weeks of production were absent, but a booming week three against the Packers (99 total yards, 1 rushing touchdown). Is it safe to say Bush is streaky? Very much so. Having him as your first running back is a bit of a chance, so I would perhaps keep starting him as a flex or second running back on your team. SLEEPERS 1. Kirk Cousins, Redskins QB This is for the unfortunate ones who are experiencing quarterback problems this season. Cousins is an excellent option to fill the need, as the Redskins quarterback threw for 427 yards

and three touchdowns last week against the Eagles. He also has not been sacked yet this year. According to NFL.com, only 20% of leagues own Cousins. He plays the struggling Giants next week, so the outlook looks tremendous for Kirk. 2. Jordan Matthews, Eagles WR With DeSean Jackson departing from Philadelphia, someone had to fill the role of go-to receiver. Jeremy Maclin was thought to be the guy, but it appears (right now anyways) that Matthews is stepping up. Week three against the Redskins, the wideout caught eight of nine passes thrown his way, with a couple of touchdowns. It looks like Matthews

is starting to get open more, and that’s a sign to keep your eyes open with the Eagles receiver. 3. Knile Davis, Chiefs RB With Jamaal Charles sidelined with an ankle injury, Knile Davis has come up huge for Kansas City so far this season. In week two, Davis had two touchdowns with 105 total yards against a tough Denver Broncos defense on the road. Last week, Davis had 32 total carries for 132 yards and a touchdown. With Davis playing the consistent way he has so far, look for him to get plenty of touches this season. Even with Charles set to return

estly, Kershaw is the best pitcher in the world. After injuring himself early in the season, there was some doubt about how he would handle the situation. There no longer is any doubt about the southpaw. Just to throw some stats out, he’s 20-3 with a 1.80 ERA. In 190 innings pitched, he has 228 strikeouts. He leads the league in wins, ERA and opponents’ batting average (.193). Not to mention he also pitched a nohitter earlier in the season. He is easily the most dominant pitcher of our generation, and he should continue his ways into the postseason as the Dodgers try to capture their seventh Championship. The Dodgers have a 22-4 record when Kershaw has started this season. When he doesn’t start, the Dodgers record is 67-64. Unbelievable numbers to consider.

next week, Davis should definitely be a part of the game plan moving forward. 4. Ladarius Green, Chargers TE e Week three was the most promising for Green, as the Bills got busy taking away Antonio Gates form San Diego’s game plan. That should free up Green to start making more plays for the Chargers, as he can easily play a slot position or even out wide at times. With Gates having a colorful injury history, Green is someone to keep an eye on. His numbers will gradually get better as the season goes on. 5. Lorenzo Taliaferro, Ravens RB

Sports

The fourth-round pick has stepped up for the Ravens this season in their tumultuous situation at running back. With Taliaferro leading the Ravens backfield in carries, yards and overall touches last week, this gives some competition to Bernard Pierce and Justin Forsett. Lorenzo has a shot to run away with the starting job as long as he keeps producing, in which the opportunity will be given to him. He’s a reasonable pick up down the road for bye weeks, and possibly a flex or second running back.

ROLAIDS RELIEF AWARD: Craig Kimbrel, Braves “Release the Kimbrel.” That

has been the saying for the dominant closer in Atlanta for a few years now. Kimbrel has become the league’s most intimidating pitcher coming out of the bullpen. His stats this season aren’t quite what they were last year, but very close and still the best no doubt. He only blew four saves in 48 save opportunities with a minuscule 1.68 ERA. Only 28 hits have been allowed in 59 innings, with 88 strikeouts. Aroldis Chapman is also a deserving nominee to mention, as his 100 strikeouts in 51 innings is record breaking. However, Kimbrel gets the award this season for staying healthy, as Kimbrel only hit the disabled list once this season. MANAGER OF THE YEAR: Mike Matheny, Cardinals The season looked bleak at the start for Matheny and the Cardinals, but it has panned out well in the end. St. Louis is getting hot at the right time, and this is the third straight season that

Matheny has led his Cardinals to a postseason birth. The team has had its struggles this season in closing out games and scoring runs, especially the first few months of the season. With the Pirates still being a challenging team, and with the hot streaks of the Brewers and Reds, it looked as if the Cardinals were not going to have a shot. The team stuck around long enough for other teams to fade, and got hot towards the end of August. They also made some moves, trading 1B/OF Allen Craig and starter Joe Kelly to the Red Sox in exchange for John Lackey and a minor league prospect. The team also traded hometown, postseason hero David Freese in the offseason. Matheny had a lot to control around him, but he has done well as a major league manager. Look for the Cardinals to be a dark horse favorite in the playoffs once again, as their pitching is good enough to take them all the way to the fall classic.
