MSU to host CEEP for the first time this fall The campus election engagement project looks to educate students on voting

EMMANUELLA SHOKARE STAFF WRITER Campus Election Engagement Project, also known as CEEP, is a project that helps universities and colleges to educate students about voting. The CEEP weekly meetings are held every Friday at the Community Engagement Office (CSU 173) at 12:00 pm and students are invited to come. They table on Fridays at the CSU and Dining Hall to help people register. According to their handbook, “CEEP helps colleges and universities use their institutional resources

to get students involved in elections by helping them register, volunteer, learn

about candidates and issues, navigate voting laws and turn out at the polls. The goal is

citizens while at school and throughout their lives. CEEP has a comprehensive roadmap called ‘Seven Key Ways’ which outlines a systematic approach to building campus and student involvement.” This is to help students get to know more about voting and the candidates they are voting for. MSU has been chosen for the first time to host CEEP this fall and it will be coordinated by a CEEP Fellow. A CEEP Fellow is usually a student whose job is to help create an environment that supports student voting. “This is the first time we have a fellow on campus and it’s through a national organization. They have just now expanded to Minnesota. There are two up in the cities

A short history on the best of the best boy bands Opinion

AARON YOUNG STAFF WRITER Boy Bands. Every teenage girls’ craze. With all the excitement of boy bands happening as of late, why not discuss some Boy Bands? The first official boy band is still up in the air, as The Ink

Spots were the “boy band” before it ever really became a thing. However, it seems that Michael Jackson may have started the trend for those to come. Jackson 5 and the Osmonds emerged in the late 1960’s as the former released the hit ABC in 1970. In the 1980’s, the New Kids on the Block and New Edition came onto the scene, with the NKOTB having “We Got it On” as their first single. They then followed up with Step by Step in 1990. New Edition had their moments in both the 80’s and the 90’s. Speaking of the 90’s, the Boy Band craze was perhaps

It shows through studies that the more college students that are involved in the process, the more Politian’s will listen to what our issues are and more educated our issues are so they can fight for us on

their levels of involvement whether being the state or federal government.” There will be events to educate students on how to register to vote, how to know more about their candidates, why they should vote to name a few. There is one station in the Preska Residential Hall and Myers Fieldhouse which open from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm on voting days. “We are just looking to make an impact this year through CEEP and students, just to make everyone change their opinion on voting and to make educated about the process and can.

OPEN LATE! Order your pizza for tailgates!

Overall, we are just trying to make students aware of their option of voting,” said Andrew Trenne Trenne stated that most people do not care about voting but he believes that spending only two minutes can impact what will happen in the next two years and also students’ voices need to be heard. brought to an apex with the Backstreet Boys and N’SYNC. The Backstreet boys had two of the greatest hits in music history with, “I Want it That Way” and “Everybody.” They turned back the clock recently, having released “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” in midMay. It is currently #82 on the billboard hot 100. It got as high as the mid-30’s globally. N’SYNC had “Bye, Bye, Bye” and breakout star Justin Timberlake. The boy bands would fade away for a while and it wasn’t until 2011 that the craze was resurrected. This was when the international Boy Band One Direction debuted after appearing on the X Factor. They would finish third but that didn’t matter, because One Direction came out with a plethora of hits. The first,

and possibly most famous, being “That’s What Makes You Beautiful.” It hit #1 in the UK and peaked at #4 in the USA. The three songs higher than that (USA) are Drag Me Down, Live While We’re Young (3), and Best Song Ever (2). In a bitter-sweet take, the group would break up for good, following Zayn Malik’s departure in March of 2015. All have solo careers and one can see why they broke up: each has a different taste in music. Zayn is pop and r&b, Liam hip-hop, Louise EDM, Harry rock, and Niall, well... My brother says he does the same stuff One D used to do, so I guess he kept with the

Kavanaugh’s trial and what’s to come JOSHUA SCHUETZ STAFF WRITER Two more women have come forward accusing US judge Brett Kavanaugh, who was nominated by President Trump to the Supreme Court, of sexual harassment. The second woman to come forward, Deborah Ramirez, alleged that Kavanaugh assaulted her during their time at Yale,

an article detailing Ramirez’s account, as well as Kavanaugh’s response. Several friends of Ramirez and Kavanaugh have questioned her account, according to the New Yorker, including a male friend of Kavanaugh’s who was there when the events described ostensibly took place, and a female former friend of Ramirez’s. Others in her social circle defended her, saying that Kavanaugh was known to drink and become belligerent when intoxicated. He allegedly exposed himself in front of her, egged on by friends who were also inebriated at the time. Ramirez is a registered

adult film actress Stormy Daniels against President Trump, tweeted on Sunday that he had information about the assault. Brett Kavanaugh was nominated to the US Supreme Court in 2018 by President Donald Trump. The Senate confirmation process has been ridden with controversies, with the sexual assault accusations coming to light in the latter part of it. There are fears among some in the GOP that standing by Kavanaugh could cost them votes with suburban women, and particularly among the college educated, who broke hard for Clinton in 2016. These allegations also come at a time when the #MeToo Movement, comprised of women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted, has succeeded in bringing sexual abusers in Hollywood, the media, and other industries to account. Dr. Ford is set to testify before the Senate on Thursday.

My favorite member is Jonah: he’s got the swag, voice, and presence. Boy bands have become a league all in their own, especially since their fans seem to be insanely loyal and intent on only raising their favorites up to the stars. Everyone’s got their favorite artist, but boy bands definitely have their own kind of fans. In all, boy bands have been a staple in music for years, and they won’t be going away any time soon. Without boy bands, half

our music wouldn’t even exist, really. Again, think back to the most iconc boy bands like N’SYNC and The Backstreet Boys. Their hits are known worldwide. Where would we be without them and their music? Boy bands like them have influenced many artists and bands for generations to come. So if you don’t have at least some respect or appreciation for boys bands, take a second to rethink that opinion.

Annual homecoming bonfire a raging success KAITLYN JORGENSEN STAFF WRITER Minnesota State University, Mankato’s homecoming bonfire was a sparkling way to kick off this week’s Homecoming events. The night began with an opening ceremony featuring our very own Maverick Machine, followed by music and games. The Homecoming bonfire was a tradition that ended in the early 1960’s for reasons unknown but was most recently revived in 2014. Rosalin Cobb and Dustin Slaughter, Homecoming 2017 Royalty, were asked to light this years’ 2018 bonfire, as last year’s event was rained out. Prior to the lighting of the bonfire, Rosalin Cobb, Homecoming 2017 Royalty, stated, “It really is an honor for us to kick off this event, and it’s amazing to be able to represent the students because without them, we wouldn’t be in this position. I’m looking forward to lighting this bonfire and then, quite literally, passing off the torch to this year’s Homecoming Royalty.” Dustin Slaughter, also Homecoming 2017 royalty, stated, “The coolest part for me is seeing all the students get out and get involved in this week. It’s exciting to see how people become more involved in Homecoming over the years, and how

A huge thank you goes out to Hot 96.7 who loaned out their sound equipment for this event. Hot 96.7 has been very involved in campus events over the last few years, not only with the Homecoming bonfire but with sponsoring things such as the Dr. Pepper scholarship giveaway, offering student internships, and covering sporting events on air such

as the Maverick football and Hockey games. Stunt Monkey, the promotions director for hot 96.7 states: “The best part about being able to coordinate with MSU for events like this is the atmosphere and excitement the students have. Especially around homecoming; one of the best times of the year.” Following the fire, there was a massive display of fireworks, which prevailed despite the unexpected downpour. A beautiful display put on by the Student Events Team and a fantastic way to kick off Homecoming Week 2018.

MARIA LY STAFF WRITER My sociology teacher once said, when someone dyes their hair a color of the rainbow, they’re going through something. I always believed that hair is a part of your personality. It shows who you are at the moment and expresses parts of your personality. I feel like with every new haircut comes a big change. Before my nine-year-old brother got his haircut he was dorky, played Yugioh, and was quite punny. After the haircut, with his spiked hair, he lost the dorkiness, and exuded a big-bad-wolf vibe. My other sister has also got a dramatic haircut accompanied by a huge personality change. She had long, curly, voluminous hair that she was very well known for. She looked like a girl who sang indie songs and smoked weed with her friends. She looked like a girl who started trends and forged signatures. Now she has wavy short hair, less definition, and bangs across her forehead.

She looks innocent. She looks like a girl who listens to k-pop, makes cookies for fun, and gets straight A’s. Before the haircut she stayed late and had friends to hang out with every day. Now she sits in her room watching Netflix and baby talking with her boyfriend on Facetime. My point is, I think hair is a part of you, not just physically but emotionally. When you cut your hair, you’re letting go of the past. You’re not only changing how you look,

but how you feel. How you feel is a major part of who you are. People dramatically change their hair to make a statement. A rebellious girl shaves half of her head to say, “Suck it mom!” A newly out lesbian cuts her hair short as a way of coming out to strangers on the street and annoying acquaintances. A person who got their heart broken by a lover cuts their hair, so they no longer look like the person in the

pictures with their exes. A person who lost their hair due to a medical issue could definitely argue about these statements. To me, their bald heads shows their strength, their journey, and the tiny hairs growing back shows the future that lies ahead. Hair was made for a reason, and it’s not there just to make us look pretty. It’s a lot more than that. It’s everything we are.

“What does your hair say about you?”

One student’s take on President Trump Opinion KOLBY SPOMER STAFF WRITER On Tuesday, the President of the United States of America addressed the United Nations in a general assembly. Sounds like a nonstory right? Well, sadly, that president is famous idiot Donald Trump, so things went a little different this time. This time, the whole assembly laughed at our President. Not with him, as he is insisting, but very much at him. Donald had claimed that his administration was accomplishing more than any other in U.S. history. Appropriately, the initial reaction was shock or just general lack of anything as most had already tuned him out. Then, people started

thinking about what he said, and a couple chuckled. Then a few more did, then everyone did, and Trump stood shocked. Which caused more laughter. Which prompted Trump to say a sentence that, to me, defines him more than anything else. “I didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s O.K.” Are you kidding you me, you oversized, egotistical, bigoted, orange, obese, loser? You didn’t expect your completely asinine and untrue ego boosting comment to be met with anything but laugher? Like what else can you possibly do at this point? You say something completely ridiculous one moment, and then you make everyone forget about it by making THE ENTIRE UNITED NATIONS LAUGH AT YOU. Honestly, there isn’t

Make-or-break Senate hearing day for Kavanaugh, accuser WASHINGTON (AP) — With high drama in the making, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh emphatically fended off new accusations of sexual misconduct Wednesday and headed into a charged public Senate hearing that could determine whether Republicans can salvage his nomination and enshrine a high court conservative majority. The Senate Judiciary Committee — 11 Republicans, all men, and 10 Democrats — was to hear from just two witnesses on Thursday: Kavanaugh, a federal appeals

court judge who has long been eyed for the Supreme Court, and Christine Blasey Ford, a California psychology professor who accuses him of attempting to rape her when they were teens. Republicans have derided her allegation as part of a smear campaign and a Democratic plot to sink Kavanaugh’s nomination. But after more allegations have emerged, some GOP senators have allowed that much is riding on Kavanaugh’s performance. Even President Donald Trump, who nominated Kavanaugh and fiercely defends him, said he

was “open to changing my mind.” “I want to watch, I want to see,” he said at a news conference in New York. Kavanaugh himself has repeatedly denied all the allegations, saying he’d never even heard of the latest accuser and calling her accusations “ridiculous and from the Twilight Zone.” The hearing will be the first time the country sees and hears from the 51-yearold Ford beyond the grainy photo that has been flashed on television in the 10 days since she came forward with her contention. In testimony

released in advance of the hearing, she said she was appearing only because she felt it was her duty, was frankly “terrified” and has been the target of vile harassment and even death threats. “It is not my responsibility to determine whether Mr. Kavanaugh deserves to sit on the Supreme Court,” she was to tell the senators. “My responsibility is to tell the truth.” The stakes for both political parties — and the country — are high. Republicans are pushing to seat Kavanaugh before the November midterms, when Senate

control could fall to the Democrats and a replacement Trump nominee could have even greater difficulty. Kavanaugh’s ascendance to the high court could help lock in a conservative majority for a generation, shaping dozens of rulings on abortion, regulation, the environment and more. But Republicans also risk rejection by female voters in November if they are seen as not fully respecting women and their allegations.

Pope: Priestly abuse scandals driving Catholic faithful away TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Pope Francis conceded Tuesday that priestly sex abuse scandals are outraging the Catholic faithful and driving them away, and said the church must change its ways if it wants to keep future generations. Francis referred directly to the crisis convulsing his papacy on the fourth and final day of his Baltic pilgrimage, which coincided with the release of a devastating new report into decades of sex abuse and cover-ups in Germany. Francis told young people in Estonia, considered one of the least religious countries in the world, that he knew many felt the church had nothing to offer them and simply doesn’t understand the problems of young adults today. “They are outraged by sexual and economic scandals that do not meet with clear condemnation, by our unpreparedness to really appreciate the lives and sensibilities of the young, and simply by the passive role we assign them,” he told Catholic, Lutheran and Orthodox young people in the Kaarli Lutheran Church in the Estonian capital of Tallinn. The pope said the Catholic Church wants to respond to those complaints transparently and honestly. “We ourselves need to be converted,” he said. “We have to realize that, in order to stand by your side, we need to change many situations that, in the end, put you off.” It was a very public admission of the impact of the church’s failures in confronting sex abuse scandals, which have roared back to the headlines recently with revelations of abuses and cover-ups in the U.S., Chilean and now German churches.

Photo courtesy of the Associated Press

On Tuesday, the German bishops conference released a report which found that some 3,677 people — more than half of them 13 or younger and nearly a third of them altar boys — were abused by clergy between 1946 and 2014. The report, compiled by university researchers, found evidence that some files were manipulated or destroyed, many cases were not brought to justice and that sometimes abusers were simply moved to other dioceses without congregations being informed about their past. The abuse scandal, which erupted in Ireland in the 1990s and subsequently in Australia and the U.S., now threatens Francis’ own papacy since his record as cardinal and pope has proven uneven. A former Vatican ambassador has also accused Francis of rehabilitating an

American cardinal who slept with seminarians. Francis has declined to respond to the accusations, and on Tuesday didn’t allow a reporter to finish asking a question about them during his in-flight news conference coming home from Tallinn. The Vatican is expected to respond formally soon. Francis did, however, suggest that it was unfair to apply contemporary moral standards on the church’s past cover-up since everyone did it at the time. “You also covered them up at home: When the uncle raped the niece, when the father raped his children. It was covered because it was so shameful,” he said. He said he wasn’t excusing the church’s cover-up, which he said was evidence of the “corruption” that has so scandalized the faithful. But he said the church has

made great strides in fighting abuse. And Francis said it’s unfair to judge the coverup with today’s standards in the same way it’s unfair to judge the forced conversion of indigenous peoples during the colonial era or even the use of the death penalty, which the pope has recently decreed cannot be condoned under any circumstance. Francis’ visit to Tallinn marked the last stop in a four-day pilgrimage that also took him to Lithuania and

Latvia. The trip aimed to encourage the Christian faith in the Baltics, which saw five decades of Soviet-imposed religious repression and state-sponsored atheism, as well as the World War II-era occupation by Nazi Germany. Francis was warmly welcomed in the region, even if Catholics are only a majority in Lithuania. Estonia only has 6,000 Catholics nationwide, but residents still seemed to welcome Francis’ inclusive message. About 10,000 people flocked to his final Mass in a chilly but sunsoaked Freedom Square near Tallinn’s charming medieval center. It was a blustery day and the wind blew off the pope’s skullcap several times. “For me, it’s in my heart what I believe, and I think Francis is this kind of ‘papa’ who wants to change,” said Marko Tubli, a Tallinn resident. “A church is not like ‘You must be this way and this way.’ It is more open.” Upon arriving Tuesday, Francis praised Estonia’s social and economic transformation in the quarter century since the 1991 Soviet collapse. But he warned that a certain “existential ennui” can set in when societies lose their cultural roots and put their faith in technological progress alone. “One of the evident effects

ACCUSER

News

Thursday, September 27, 2018

Continued from page 7

In the hours before the hearing, Republicans were rocked by the new accusation from a third woman, Julie Swetnick. In a sworn statement, she said she witnessed Kavanaugh “consistently engage in excessive drinking and inappropriate contact of a sexual nature with women in the early 1980s.” Her attorney, Michael Avenatti, who also represents a porn actress who is suing Trump, provided her sworn declaration to the Judiciary Committee. Meanwhile, the lawyer for Deborah Ramirez, who says Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a party when they attended Yale University, raised her profile in a round of television interviews. Transcripts of private interviews with committee investigators, released late Wednesday, show they also asked Kavanaugh about two other previously undisclosed accusations received by Senate offices. One came in an anonymous letter sent to Sen. Cory Gardner’s office describing an incident in a bar in 1998, when Kavanaugh was working for the independent counsel investigating President Bill Clinton. The other accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct in college. Kavanaugh denied them both. Republicans largely expressed confidence in Kavanaugh ahead of the hearing, emerging from a closed-door lunch with Vice President Mike Pence to say the nominee remains on track for confirmation. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell all week has said Republicans will turn to a committee vote on

Kavanaugh after the hearing. They hope for a roll call by the full Senate — where they have a scant 51-49 majority — early next week with the aim of getting him on the court as its new term begins. But at least a hint of doubt has crept in. Asked whether there were signs of Republicans wavering in their support of Kavanaugh in their lunch, Sen. John Thune, the third-ranking Republican, paused briefly before saying “no.” In the hearing, Democrats plan to ask Kavanaugh if he’d be willing to undergo FBI questioning about the various claims — a request Republicans oppose— and press him about his drinking and behavior as a teenager. One goal is to emphasize inconsistencies in his statements so far and make him appear nervous, said a Democratic aide who described the plan on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss it publicly. Questions for Ford will be aimed at giving her a chance to explain herself. That includes describing why it took her so long to publicly discuss the alleged incident and how it’s affected her life, the aide said Ford will testify first at the hearing, which starts at 10 a.m. and at her request is being held in a small, woodpaneled hearing room that seats only a few dozen spectators. Republicans have hired an outside attorney, Phoenix prosecutor Rachel Mitchell, to handle much of their questioning. Thus, they will avoid having their all-male contingent interrogating Ford

about the details of what she describes as a harrowing assault. Democratic questioners will include two senators widely seen as potential presidential candidates in 2020: Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey, who aggressively challenged Kavanaugh during the judge’s earlier confirmation hearing. Ford plans to tell the committee that, one night in the summer of 1982, a drunken Kavanaugh forced her down on a bed, “groped me and tried to take off my clothes,” then clamped his hand over her mouth when she tried to scream before she was able to escape. “I believed he was going to rape me,” she will say, according to her prepared testimony. Kavanaugh is being challenged on multiple fronts by his accusers, former classmates and college

friends. They say the goodguy image he projects in public bears little relation to the hard-partying behavior they witnessed when he was young. In his prepared testimony, the 53-year-old appellate judge acknowledges drinking in high school with his friends, but says he’s never done anything “remotely resembling” what Ford describes. He said he has never had a “sexual or physical encounter of any kind” with her. He also provided the committee with detailed calendar pages listing in green-and-white squares the activities that filled his summer of 1982 when he was 17 years old — exams, movies, sports and plenty of parties. That’s the year when Ford says she believes the assault occurred.

Nothing on the calendar appears to refer to her. Ford released sworn statements from people who said she had told them about the assault in later years. Activity on Capitol Hill is likely to grind to a halt during the proceedings, with lawmakers glued to their televisions during what is widely seen as a sequel to the politically explosive hearings of 1991 with Anita Hill, who accused now-Justice Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment. Thomas denied Hill’s accusation. “I’ve cleared the calendar and I’m going to watch every word of the hearing,” said Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, who added that he has a positive view of Kavanaugh but has yet to decide how he’ll vote.

Some black Americans see racial comeuppance in Cosby saga PHILADELPHIA (AP) — After spending years building his persona as a model husband and father, Bill Cosby took an abrupt turn nearly 15 years ago with a now-infamous speech to an NAACP convention. He used his celebrity status to condemn poor AfricanAmericans, chiding them to pull up their sagging pants, deriding them for having children out of wedlock and blaming them for their impoverished circumstances. “Are you not paying attention? People with their hat on backwards, pants down around the crack . with names like Shaniqua, Shaligua, Mohammed and all that crap, and all of them are in jail.” Cosby himself is now in a Pennsylvania prison cell, and many black Americans see his sentence as a moment of racial comeuppance. As they learned of Cosby’s three- to 10-year prison term for sexual assault, the same people who were his targets in the 2004 speech regarded his fate as a convergence of karma, hubris and hypocrisy. Some quoted Cosby’s own words in tweets announcing the sentence. Cosby “made the decision to focus his attention on beating up on the black poor, on telling the world that black people were dysfunctional, pathological and undeserving of equal protection under the law,” said Temple University

professor Marc Lamont Hill. “When somebody like that, who positions themselves as the moral authority of black America, gets called onto the carpet, you ain’t getting no breaks here. People are going to be frustrated.” Writer Michael Arceneaux said Cosby’s contempt for people who grew up in lowincome communities, as Arceneaux did in Houston, left him with little sympathy for Cosby, who also hailed from humble beginnings. “I found it enraging,” Arceneaux said of the “Poundcake” speech, so called because Cosby make a remark about blacks supposedly getting shot in disputes over dessert cake. “I knew he was a hypocrite. To learn how much pain he has caused to women over decades . I find it ironic. Those speeches proved to be his undoing. I’m glad he got what he deserved,” he added. Cosby’s own words were a catalyst for his downfall. In a July 2015 memo outlining the decision to unseal a 2005 deposition in the case, a federal judge cited the speech: “This case . is not about defendant’s status as a public person by virtue of the exercise of his trade as a televised or comedic personality. Rather, defendant has donned the mantle of public moralist and mounted the proverbial electronic or print soap box to volunteer

his views on, among other things, child rearing, family life, education and crime.” “The stark contrast between Bill Cosby, the public moralist, and Bill Cosby, the subject of serious allegations concerning improper (and perhaps criminal) conduct, is a matter as to which . the public has a significant interest,” he continued. Cosby pointed to systemic irresponsibility, not racism, as the root cause of what was wrong with black culture. But after his sentencing, spokesman Andrew Wyatt called Cosby’s trial “the most racist and sexist” in American history. He referred to the entertainer as “one of the greatest civil rights leaders” and accused the media, judge and prosecution team of prejudice against a black man. Cosby, who is 81 and legally blind, was the first celebrity of the #MeToo era to be sent to prison. The movement, which began a year ago, has centered around men in Hollywood, the media and politics. While several powerful men have lost their livelihoods and reputations, no one else has lost their freedom. Tuesday’s sentencing came amid a firestorm surrounding the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, who is accused by three women of sexual misconduct as a high school and college student.

Photo courtesy of the Associated Press

Kavanaugh has denied all of the allegations and is expected to testify Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, along with one of his accusers, Christine Blasey Ford. Rather than reveling in revenge for Cosby, the focus now should be on justice for all

credible accusers, Columbia University political science professor Keith Boykin said. “He disappointed me. He didn’t put anything in my drink,” Hill said. “As awful as he has been to the world, my commitment is not to punishing Bill Cosby. It’s getting justice for his victims.”

Aar Manta performs at Kato Ballroom Maanta continues to create unity spreading Somali culture through song

MARK REYNOLDS STAFF WRITER Somali-British Singer Aar Maanta finished a week-long residency at MNSU Mankato with a performance at the Kato Ballroom on Saturday, Sept. 22. Maanta and his London-based band, “the Urban Nomads,” played an electric, energy-filled show. The danceable, syncopated rhythms that characterize Somali music had everyone in the ballroom on their feet. Though Maanta and his music are Somali, his multi-cultural collection of bandmates brings in musical elements from around the world. Hints of jazz, reggae,

Aar Manta perfoms at the Kato Ballroom on Sep. 22 and western pop are sprinkled into the Somali base to create a worldly sound that brings people together. The feeling and emotion

put into the songs can be felt and understood even by those who don’t speak Somali. Students from Mankato East and West high schools,

Brockhampton releases new album The Album “iridescence” is a weird, but good time

KOLBY SPOMER STAFF WRITER “The world’s greatest boy band”. This is how rap group Brockhampton describes themselves. This past weekend, they dropped their newest and most experimental album, “iridescence” and they once again prove they deserve their self-ascribed status of the greatest. Created in 2016, the group has some interesting routes. Founding members, such as Kevin Abstract and Ameer Van, met each other on an online forum dedicated to the music stylings of Kanye West. After long talks

with each other, they decided to start a group together, in which they would be able to rap and sing about anything the wanted to. Filling out the

group with key members like JOBA and Merlyn Wood, they dropped their debut album “All-American Trash”. It was met with lukewarm reception

by the few who listened to it. Amongst the few reviews made about the album, there were a few clear points being made.

To binge or not to binge: American Vandal Season Two

LUCAS TORBORG A&E EDITOR The highly anticipated season two of the Netflix original series American Vandal is a s**t load of fun and has far more to offer than just poop jokes. Last year Netflix released a little show called American Vandal. The show was a mockumentary about a high school prank involving the image of a penis being spray painted on the school’s faculty’s cars. The season follows an investigation of who really spray painted the phallic symbols. As a parody of Netflix’s “Making a Murderer” the show was surprisingly met with critical praise for being hilarious while also carrying great social commentary underneath. Can the new season of American Vandal live up to the original season or will it suffer from sequelitis? Season

Lucas Torborg | MSU Reporter

number two of American Vandal is ironically about just that number two. The prank this year involves poop and a lot of it. The creators of the show, Tony Yacenda and Dan Per-

ault, keeps the show feeling fresh and new by setting this prank at a private school rather than a public school. This was a smart decision as it gave the show the opportunity explore different problems

within high school, that are especially evident in private schools. Season two also provides a new cast besides the documentary crew who narrated season one. Unfortu-

nately, break out star of season one, Jimmy Tatro, is not in this season. However, this provides for new high school stereotypes and characters to be explored in the newest season that were absent in the first. Season two may be less funny than season one, but it offers a far more interesting story that is extremely realistic and sometimes even heartbreaking. Season two’s centers around Kevin McClain, a student at St. Bernadine Private High School. In the fall of 2017, the lemonade given out during lunch was poisoned with laxatives causing every student in the school to poop their pants. This event would later be coined as “the brown out”. The school has convicted McClain as being the “S**t Burglar”, the alias of the prankster who leaves a picture of a poop emoji at the scene of each crime. Claiming

What’s on the menu for homecoming?

HAMPTON Continued from page 16 the group had never been higher, so the group released fewer single before the album released this time around. Once it did, it was again beloved, but a new complaint had arisen. Some thought that the group had, ironically, oversaturated the market with their sound. In addition to this, rapper Ameer Vann had been caught up in numerous allegations, and was cut out of the group because of all this, the group took some time to regroup before they released their newest album. That brings us to this weekend, with the release of “iridescence”. The album sounds completely different than the “Saturation” trilogy, while not different at the same time. Firstly, the production is top notch, and maybe the best on any rap album this year. The rapping sounds different now that Ameer is gone, but it isn’t’ necessarily worse. The lyrics are noticeably worse, but that is due to the album being reworked ten days before release. Falling somewhere between “Big Fish Theory” by Vince Staples and “Yeezus” by Kanye West, “iridescence” is a small fall for the group in terms of writing quality, a side step in terms of ability, and a jump ahead in terms of production and beats. I think it is worse overall than the Saturation records, but it might be my favorite album by them yet. Expect a weird time, but not necessarily a bad one.

One, the group had unbelievable potential, and secondly, they needed to hone in their ideas into a more concise experience if they wanted to achieve that potential. After hearing the feedback, the boys got back to work. Spending the majority of the next year working on their album, they made little in the ways of public statements. That is, until they dropped their first single for their newest album, “Saturation”. “HEAT” was released in early 2017, and the wonderful track was accompanied by a very fresh music video filmed in a retro style. This would become a trait of the group over the coming months, as each single had its own music video filmed in its own style. Shortly after the single, they released “Saturation” to the public, and the reaction was nothing but positive. The album showed them living up to their potential while adding a distinct new sound into the hip-hop atmosphere. A month after the album dropped, a new single was released by the group, in which they announced a new album titled “Saturation 2”. As Singles came out, hype increased, due to the group’s’ newly found fanbase. Eventually, the album dropped, and it was again universally acclaimed. Being described as more explosive than the first “Saturation”, people found it was more listenable than the first. The group wasn’t done, however, as shortly after “Saturation 2” they posted another single video announcing a third album titled “Saturation 3”. Hype for

Luckily, the new additions aren’t bad. Showcasing their extensive original program library, Netflix is adding new seasons of Big Mouth, Daredevil, Making a Murderer, and Castlevania. Movie fans

will also have something exciting to look forward to as Netflix adds greats like Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, The Green Mile, and western classic Once Upon a Time in America. MANTA Continued from page 16 Maanta and his band were brought to MNSU as a part of the Midnimo Grant that the University received in 2016. The grant, which is named for the Somali word for “unity,” aims to increase understanding of Muslim and Somali culture in Minnesota, which has the largest population of Somali immigrants in North America. “The intent of the grant,” said Dale Haefner, MNSU’s Music Performance Series Director, “is to educate non-Muslims about Muslim culture and art through music. And music is a universal language that everyone can understand.” Last year, Somali artist Nimco Yasin was brought to MNSU Mankato for a similar residency through this grant. As part of her residency, she worked with songwriting students to compose and record a song within a single day. As part of the residency, the artists also traveled to schools in the local school district. “She went out to Jefferson Elementary and another elementary school and showed the students where Somalia is located, brought in some Somali artifacts and also taught them the “Dhaanto,” a folk dance,” Haefner said. Yasin and Maanta are products of a turbulent political climate in Somalia. In a country where the arts used to be publicly funded, a war and

following power shift made many Somalis flee the country, including many musicians. Artists like these two are part of an effort to keep Somali music and culture alive. Their story-centric songwriting style seems to be striking a chord with some, as the Somali scene is making strides. The arts are finally making a

comeback in Somalia, and now is spreading across the world. Local Mankato reggae group Irie Minds opened for Aar Maanta and despite coming from opposite sides of the world, their music shares much in common with the Somali rhythms of Aar Maanta. “Their music has kind of

a similar vibe to some of Aar Maanta’s stuff. Aar Maanta gets into a reggae vibe on occasion,” Haefner said. Much like Somali music, Irie Minds’ reggae beats are crafted to bring people onto the dancefloor and have a good time: forgetting life’s troubles and dancing with friends.

The syncopated rhythms, good vibes and even similar instruments show that we have much more in common with people than we might think. Irie Minds will be performing at the MNSU homecoming parade on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m.

umentary crew from the first season crew is sent to solve the crime and to unveil the secrets behind the school. Saying anymore plot details about the season would surely ruin the viewer’s experience. Although, season two may be funnier and have a much better prankster, the

new season is by far the superior season. The new season is highly addictive to watch having the viewer continuously guess who the burglar is. Most people will not be able to see the ending coming. What this season does phenomenally is create highly complex and lay-

ered character based on the high school cliches nearly everyone has experienced. Whether it be the extremely awkward and pretentious nerd, the extremely popular arrogant jock who runs the school, or the stuck up rich girl, these students more than they appear on the outside.

Although this show may appear as if its just full of poop jokes it is far more than that, it is layered with social commentary about the modern American high school and the masks they must wear to fit in.

Football has one mission: Beat Cloud The Mavs ready to do battle this weekend against the St. Cloud Huskies on Homecoming BRADY OLSON STAFF WRITER As Homecoming week hits Mankato this weekend, the Mavericks football team is preparing to go up against rival St. Cloud State this Saturday in a battle for the coveted “Traveling Training Kit”. The Mavericks won their previous contest back in 2016 against St. Cloud State, defeating the Huskies 45-12. However, despite recent success against this team, the Mavericks have historically struggled against them. St. Cloud has won six of the last 10 matchups between the two schools, including handing the Mavericks a playoff loss in 2013, a year where they had been 11-0 before facing the Huskies. St. Cloud is also the last loss the Mavericks received in a Homecoming game, handing MSU a 31-17 defeat back in 2010. This season’s matchup is built to be a chess match between two tough teams. Soccer looks to bounce back this weekend The team is set to face-off against two tough matchups with Minot State and the University of Mary coming to town

AARON YOUNG STAFF WRITER Minnesota State soccer is ready to grace the field once again, while searching for redemption this weekend after coming off a 1-1 tie with St. Cloud State. The team has two games ready to take place in Mankato this weekend, just in time for Homecoming. This Friday, the Mavericks will face off against the University of Mary Marauders here in Mankato at 3 p.m., and then will follow that up with a Sunday matchup against the Minot State Beavers at noon. The University of Mary Marauders come into Friday

8th in the NSIC standings, with a record of 2-2-1 in the conference. Based on record alone, the Mavs look to be the favorites heading into this matchup, but as we’ve seen in years past, records can be deceiving, as Mary has shown this season that they’re able to still compete with a lot of the teams in this conference. Mavericks’ other opponent, the Minot State Beavers, will also be a tough opponent for the Mavericks going into Sunday. The Beavers have been able to compete with the big teams this season, with five of their last six games being decided by one goal or less this season. They go into Sunday look to steal one from the Mavericks. Before the Mavericks tied with the Huskies, they were on a 3-game winning streak where they scored 8 goals and only gave up 1. Cross Country ready for toughest meet of the year The Griak will be a huge test for the team this season, facing the best competition in the country

BOBBI PATRICK STAFF WRITER The men and women’s cross country teams travel to Minneapolis to compete in the 33rd annual Roy Griak invitational this Saturday. “The Griak”, one of the biggest meets in the country, attracts teams from all over the nation to compete at the Lee Bolstad Golf Course. Even though this course is known to be one of the toughest around the country, the men and women have been looking forward to this meet since the start of the season. “Griak is such a tough course because runners are unable to get into a groove,” said men’s head cross country coach, Chris Rombough, “you’re always going uphill or downhill, and there are many turns. It requires true mental and physical toughness to race well on that course.” The challenge of the Griak has always been attractive to many teams and coaches. Large universities such as Iowa State University and

small high school teams from Wisconsin travel to compete at the distinguished meet every year. The lady mavericks have some work to do this weekend to show they can be a threat in the upcoming postseason. “The women need to close the gap between the 1st and 5th runner to under 30 seconds,” said the head women’s cross country coach, Jen Blue.

The women’s team ran at the St. Olaf invite last weekend in Northfield, Minn. and placed 3rd behind the University of Minnesota and Carleton College. “The women train together and I have seen them step up the past few weeks being we are without 2 of our top 7 runners,” said women’s head cross country coach, Jen Blue. The men’s team competed at the Oz Memorial three

weeks ago on the same course that the Griak is hosted on. They took last weekend off and are coming into Griak with fresh legs looking to prove they are ready to compete. “From looking at the teams competing this weekend, I think we’ve got a great opportunity for a top three finish,” said Chris Rombough. just a couple of months for the Mavericks. They will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3rd in Aberdeen, SD, while the NCAA Central Regional race will be held on Saturday Nov. 17th in Joplin, MO for the squad. In these meets, the team certainly can run, but they can’t hide from the competition. The Mavericks look to show who the real rulers of the NSIC are during the next set of meets.

8, and 25 shots. In addition to her individual success, she has two assists. Other impact players include Dakota Wendell and Molly Riley, each with 3 goals on the season as well. The defense also has been an integral part to the team’s success. Each part of the team needs to be perform-

ing well in order for them to reach success. Goalkeeper Alexa Rabune will also be a key to the Maverick soccer team’s success come Friday. The goalkeeper was stellar in the tie against the Huskies, and has been solid throughout the year. When the team performs well, it reflects in the stand-

ings. They are third in the NSIC, being 5-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference. The team will head into Friday with the fans behind and a statement to make. Be sure to be there to see our girls hit the turf and get ready for another Maverick soccer game.

eraging 107.5 rushing yards per game and has 9 rushing touchdowns, good enough for second in the nation. He will be going up against a defense that has allowed only 67 rushing yards per game this season. Minnesota State’s defense will look to have a fight this week as well, particularly on the defensive line. St. Cloud

State has one of the division’s best offensive lines, while MSU has one of the country’s better defensive fronts. MSU will look to find ways to pressure St. Cloud’s junior quarterback Dwayne Lawhorn, who has thrown for 719 yards and six touchdowns this season. Both teams are coming off close road wins last week as

well. St. Cloud State defeated Northern State 19-14, scoring the game-winning touchdown in the last five minutes of the game. The Mavericks needed an aggressive second-half comeback to beat Winona State 31-21. After going into halftime down 21-7, the Mavs shut out Winona’s offense in the second half while piling on 17 points in

The Jimmy Butler saga continues for the Wolves JOHN LAFOREST STAFF WRITER Jimmy Butler’s refusal to participate in the Minnesota Timberwolves media day Monday is reassuring his days in Minneapolis are numbered. The saga of Jimmy Butler continued late last week when a report came out after a meeting with the head coach, Tom Thibodeau, in Los Angeles that Butler wanted out. The demand should’ve came to no surprise to the Timberwolves as Butler had started to disassociate himself from the team when he refused to sign an extension. On September 19, 2018 Jimmy Butler requested a trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves after just one season. Butler not only requested the trade, but also came up with a preferred teams list. This list includes the Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Clippers. According to reports, Butler only had one year left on his deal and the list was made for teams who he could

Jimmy Butler (pictured) has demanded a trade from the Timberwolves after disconnect with the team over his recent contract negotiations with the franchise. possible sign an extension with. The teams on his list came as a shock to many fans, players and journalist around the country. All three of those

teams missed the playoffs in the 2017-2018 NBA season and Butler in all likelihood will be the only All Star caliber player on the squad. The list is shocking and comes as a

surprise and question to Butler’s character for many fans out there. Why does Butler want to get out so bad? The Wolves are coming off their first playoff appearance in over a decade. The team is bringing back the same starters and most of the bench players who are heavily experienced. The Wolves have enough talent with Jimmy to compete in the Western Conference so the request seems not un basketball related. Mutterings have emerged that Butler just doesn’t appear to like Minnesota. Butler is from near the Houston area and previously played for a big market team in the Chicago Bulls. His move could very

well be predicated on his desire to be in the spotlight. All three of the teams on Butler’s wish list are some of the larger markets in the business. That word is all this seems to be, just business. Being in a bigger market will lead to a bigger financial gain off the court as well as even on the court. Butler cannot be blamed for wanting a move and be the holder of his own future, but one questions where his priorities lie. Staying in Minnesota would almost surely guarantee more immediate success than the Clippers, and especially the Nets. This move for Butler is risky but proves where his faith lies the most, in himself.

Everson Griffen’s mental health no laughing matter The Vikings main concern for the pro-bowl defensive end is he’s back to being healthy

KOLBY SPOMER STAFF WRITER Over the weekend, Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen was placed in the care of mental health professionals after his wife and team officials deemed it necessary. Griffen has recently been slipping rapidly, leaving his house for extended periods of time, according to his wife, and then only coming home to verbally argue with her. At practice recently, he had been disruptive and extremely vocal, causing the team to ban him from practice altogether. The official interaction between Griffen and the police, after numerous calls and requests for intervention by law officials, is as follows: “Everson was outside yelling. Officer Thompson and I approached Everson. Officer Thompson and I spoke to

Everson Griffen’s current mental health condition has grown to the point where he’s become a threat to the closest people in his life, including his family and teammates. Everson. Everson was making comments about “777” and that he went to Wayne’s house because “God made me do it” and went on to say that there was a sign on the front door saying “welcome fall” so that’s why he went there. Paramedics were called to the home and Everson agreed to go to the hos-

pital. However, on the way to the hospital, he “got up and jumped out of the ambulance because he was in fear that someone was going to shoot him.” The officers convinced him to get back in the ambulance and they escorted him to the hospital. From this report, we can

ascertain a few things, most notably that Griffen broke into fellow teammate Trae Wayne’s home. Why he did this is anyone’s guess, but it most likely has something to do with underlying mental health problems. In the past, a few mentions of Griffen’s bipolar depression has been made, but it

was always told in a way that showed that he had control. What we are seeing now is someone spiral out of control. Hopefully, this situation can bring about some good. First off, Griffen can get the help he so evidently needs. Due to his current profession as an NFL football player, he will have access to the best medical care possible. This then leads into my second hope, that mental health may be accessible to people in worse positions than Griffen. The health care situation in this country is its own thing, so my hope is that the Vikings partner together to help people like Griffen get the help they so desperately need. And finally, I hope that this turn of events sheds some light on how important the mental health is to a person. Griffen wasn’t sidelined with any sort of physical ailment, it was all mental. If the NFL wants to continue far into the future, and I hope they do because I love football, they must address situations like Griffens with the appropriate actions.

Minnesota United defeats Portland Timbers 3-2 GAGE CURETON STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER With only five games left of the season and playoffs fast approaching, Minnesota United defeated the determined Portland Timbers, 3-2, at TCF Bank Stadium last Saturday night. The Timbers played mean offensively during the first half, keeping Minnesota in a defensive gridlock. The Loons fought with tenacity, saving the ball from sinking in their contested goal. The tables finally turned in the 18th minute, as Minnesota midfielder Fernando Bob broke the offense as he launched a calculated ball up the field toward forward Darwin Quintero. Quintero fell upon it, working past a defender and beating the goalkeeper off their line. Midfielder Romario Ibarra rushed the outside and closed in on the quick pass to him by Quintero. Spectators wailed with excitement as Ibarra scored the first point of the game with Quintero’s smart set up. The Loons celebrated, and the stadium cheered with exhilaration as Ibarra’s

name echoed throughout the crowd. The remainder of the first half played out nearly the same, with the Timbers fighting to keep the ball in the offense, and Minnesota working openings in their favor. Quintero and Ibarra worked off each other’s skills; Quintero with his ability to play the field and Ibarra’s quick thinking. After two more failed at-

tempts at a goal by the pair, Ibarra made his second point of the game after catching a pass from Quintero and running the ball to a near-unguarded goal. However, Ibarra’s celebration was short lived as he trotted from the goal grabbing his hamstring. He was later pulled from the game for a suspected injury. Less than three minutes until halftime, defender Michael

Boxall of the United scored his second goal of the season with a corner throw from Quintero, placing Minnesota 3-0. Boxall’s score was almost unexpected and he leapt into the air, drew his fist to the sky and blew a kiss to his new fiancé in the spectator boxes. A week earlier, Boxall’s fiancé predicted he would score his second goal. The second half of the

game the Timbers amped up their offensive strategy to win back their losses. Portland defender Alvas Powell sank the team’s first goal in the 55th minute with a corner kick passed to him. The shot gained in distance and sailed through gaps between players before striking the net. The Timbers’ strategy continued to prove effective, and within almost 10 minutes of Powell’s play, Portland’s midfielder Sebastian Blanco rushed through Minnesota’s goal box and scored their team’s second point. However, Portland’s comeback fell short of time as Minnesota kept up their defense. Even as the game went into 6 minutes stoppage time, Portland lost to Minnesota 3-2. The 6 minutes of stoppage time were wasted by Portland as their team slowed and accepted defeat. Saturday’s game drew a larger than expected crowd of 24,525 people, ready to get their love of American soccer on. And on the sidelines was a young photojournalist, fueled by the energetic heat of the crowd to see it.
