Fetty flakes out, but show must go on Students came for Fetty Wap but stayed for Melly Mike
LUCAS TORBORG A&E EDITOR When it comes to orchestrating an event the coordinators of said event must plan for every possible outcome imaginable, but what happens when the unthinkable occurs. This is exactly what took place during Minnesota State University, Mankato’s 2018 Homecoming Concert, when headliner Fetty Wap failed to appear at his own concert. The Student Events Team has recently announced that they currently giving out refunds for the concert. This was contributed to a delayed flight. However, at 4 p.m. Oct. 28, the day of the concert, Fetty posted an Instagram story at a gift shop in New Jersey. This raises the

question if Fetty was ever planning on coming. This is not the first time Fetty has failed to attend his own concert. According to Vlad TV, in the spring of 2016 Fetty failed to show
up to a concert at Brockport College in New York without informing them in advance— sound familiar? According to hip hop magazine, “The Source”, on Sept. 18, just 10 days
prior to the concert, Fetty signed on to a new label, “Tr3yway Entertainment”, the same label representing platinum selling rapper 6ix9ine. This may have a correlation with his absence
at the concert. Believing Fetty was just running late, the MNSU Student Events Team was given the difficult task to control and please an audience that were highly anticipating Fetty’s arrival. Although the absence of Fetty was not the desired outcome for the concert, the crisis did offer a chance for beginning artists to perform for a longer period of time in front of a larger crowd than usual. In an Instagram post, Caroline Roman, one of the openers for Silento posted, “Last night was insane. One of the biggest shows I’ve performed at to this day. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Minnesota.” Another one of these artists included MNSU Junior Melly Mike (Michael Hunt) who was the opening act. During his 30-minute slate, Melly’s robust energy and amazing charisma had the

Mav Battalion ROTC program trains hard KAILTYN JORGENSEN STAFF WRITER The Maverick Battalion ROTC program recently attended their annual field training exercise, or FTX. This year’s FTX took place at Camp Ripley in Little Falls, MN. Beginning Thursday, September 27th through Sunday the 30th. The Maverick Battalion is a combined effort of MNSU, Gustavus-Adolphus, and Bethany Lutheran College students. The four-day threenight excursion was a basic immersion into a field environment for Freshman and Sophomore Cadets (MS1’s and MS2’s) in the
program, and a preparatory field exercise for the Juniors (MS3’s) who will soon be attending their advanced camp in Fort Knox, KY this upcoming summer. Some activities Cadets participated in were: a land navigation course, weapons qualification, CH-47 helicopter rides, paintball, and an obstacle course. As an MS2 in the program, I can attest to the fact that this year’s FTX held vast improvements for this year’s Cadets. A lot of the changes implemented by the Seniors (MS4’s) this year were put into place based on their previous experience at

Alumni reflect on antiwar movement in “Two Weeks in May” JOSHUA SCHUETZ STAFF WRITER Former alumni and faculty from Minnesota State University served on a panel and presentation Tuesday evening, concerning the events of April and May, 1972, when the antiwar movement in Mankato came to its zenith. The panel was preceded by a showing of the film ‘Two Weeks in May’, which is based on former MNSU president James Nickerson’s memoir, “Out of Chaos”. The film chronicles the figures and events behind the antiwar movement, including the radical ‘pied piper’, Mitchell Goodman, and the first international faculty member, Abbass Kessel. Some of the people whose testimonies are featured in the film served on the panel, including Dr. Don Strosser, retired professor emeritus of history at MNSU, Mark Halverson, a MNSU alumni who served as the county DFL chair and was an activist during the years, and John Anderson, a MNSU alumni who served in the Vietnam war and became disillusioned with it, joining the antiwar movement upon returning home. The changes that MNSU was undergoing during this period also inflamed tensions. Rising enrollment, particularly of minority students, the split of the university between two campuses, and an influx of
veteran students who had become deeply opposed to the war that they had been sent to fight, all contributed to the energy and intensity of the protests. The number of students who participated in the protests was high. About one in every three students at MNSU participated. However, there were students who remained in favor of the war, and wrote to President Nickerson decrying the antiwar movement. Dr. Strosser noted that tensions were not just

Continued from page 1 audience momentarily forget they were there for Fetty to begin with. “I was trying to knock everyone out of the water”, said Melly. The artist’s set was full of original songs, such as his personal favorite “What I Want”. Melly and his crew also performed countless dance moves, including the trending dance move the “shoot” and even a couple of back flips for safe measure. It is evident that Melly clearly has a strong stage presence and will do anything to make sure his audience is having a good time. “Obviously they were excited to see Fetty and I was the opener, but they still reciprocated amazing energy. My songs are kind of wild, I was on stage going crazy and I would hop on and off the stage and see like three mosh pits. I felt like I was at Sound Set,” said Melly.

Although a large audience awaiting a late headliner may have made many other artists nervous, it certainly did not make Melly feel this way. “I don’t get nervous. Things like that feel super natural to me, it comes to me with ease”, Melly said. Melly has performed at other events surrounding the Mankato area. His first being as a freshman at MNSU during the 2015 Battle of the Bands. Melly followed this with performing at the Mankato bar Red Rocks and Mineapolis’ Kitty Kat Club. Those interested can follow Melly Mike on Instagram at melly__mike and can also look forward to his mixtape dropping soon which features many of his songs from the concert. present among students, but faculty as well. “Those against the war tended to come from the humanities and social sciences, while those who supported the war tended to come from business and physical science departments.” he said. Describing the actions of the protestors, Halverson said, “Think globally but act locally. We brought what was happening far away in another country home to Mankato.” Divisions weren’t just between antiwar protestors and those in favor, however.
Anderson stated that “there were two school of thought, the nonviolent and the more violent.” Tensions between factions could be just as rancorous as the tensions between those in favor and opposed to the war. Mitchell Goodman, described by Dr. Strosser as the “pied piper or irresponsible radicalism” was among the more radical people, often accused of being a communist. His ideas were not necessarily violent, per se, but could certainly skirt close to it, and he
believed that shutting the entire campus down was a necessary step in opposing the war. Other faculty disagreed. The debates often spilled into the student newspaper, with headlines like “Strike! Strike! Strike!” becoming increasingly common. When asked what it was like for faculty during the times of the antiwar movement, Dr. Strosser said, “It was the best of times, and it was the worst of times.”

Some new activities at this year’s FTX featured the obstacle course, shooting pop up targets, and classes on call for fire and calling in nine-line medevac requests. Alexandra Brady (MS4), a medic in the Minnesota Army National Guard and the current Cadet Battalion Commander stated, “The most difficult part of organizing FTX was the pop up range because of the logistics and availability of equipment, as well as always making sure to have a back

You get to watch a change happen in the Cadets who are new to the program and unsure about themselves. After a few days they begin to warm up to the program, and soon they are feeling right at home.” Tyler Piotter, a Junior in the program stated “Being an MS3 adds a lot of responsibility. This association provides a diverse community as it welcomes people from all over the world thereby providing an interface for acculturation. The effects of the latter can be seen in multiple levels as members of this organization tend to adopt and fully understand new cultures. This association is open and welcoming to just about anybody and taking MNSU for example, one can easily become a member of this association by simply signing up on their mail through the MNSU website or attending a physical meeting to be an official and recognized member. Membership, though, comes at a cost. But in this case, it is a small one to pay as this association requires its members to attend at least one to two meetings within a week or inform team leaders of your absence before meeting hours. During these meetings, it is important for every member to get fully involved with its activities so as to familiarize themselves with the daily routine of this organization, create a friendly atmosphere with other team members and also give other

International Student Association welcomes all students members a chance to learn and broaden their horizons. With this association comes diversity not just in culture but also in activities such as concerts, sports and other assorted events. One main event which creates an interface for interaction between members of this organization and also the locals is Cultural Nights which gives students an infinite sphere of diversity and unlimited resources to fully achieve their goals, one can fully say this association fends for its members and helps them achieve greater heights. Let us take for example Homecoming which was held at MNSU last week, this writer partook fully with a smiley face throughout the whole event filled with fun activities such as an eating competition which was held at the Heritage Room which was won by a visiting student, International Mingling held at the CSU Ballroom, Speed Connect and so on and so forth thereby giving members, attendees and locals a chance to partake fully in great activities. This association comes with a zeal and dedication to help its members and give them a better tomorrow. This can clearly be seen in the increase in members year in year out and again taking MNSU as an example, it was estimated in 2013 that this organization had about a thousand members and today its members are estimated to be about six times more. This is a great organization and I encourage them to continue the good work, and I am very proud to be a member of this association.

OLUWATOMIKE BALI STAFF WRITER What is rape? I want to believe everyone has his or her own definition of what rape is, but what really is rape? According to English Oxford living dictionary Rape is, “The crime, typically committed by a man, of forcing another person to have sexual intercourse with the offender against their will.” My own definition is this, rape is the crime committed by a person by forcing another person to have sexual intercourse with him or her against their own will, be it male or female. Which leads me to say that if both parties involved in the act are not on the same page, then it is rape. We live in a society where rape is only labelled to happen to women and girls, and even though statistics have proven the number of this crime is higher in girls, that doesn’t make it invisible that men and boys too experience this. A quick glance into the figures. According to RAINN (Rape, Abuse &

Incest National Network) as of 1998, an estimated 17.7 million American women had been victims of attempted or completed rape while as of 1998, 2.78 million men in the U.S. had been victims of attempted or completed rape. Those are just the figures that we are aware of, (the ones that were reported, that is,) we don’t know of the cases that were never reported and that was just in the year 1998. As of 2018 it’s been recorded by HuffPost that every 98 seconds someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. That means every single day more than 570 people
experience sexual violence in this country. In a society where rape isn’t seen as a big deal or where the victims are being blamed for getting raped, those figures are very alarming. And after thinking deeply about this I ended with a question. What are some ways we as the people of the community can help? I don’t think it is completely possible to end rape because we as humans don’t have the power to control other human’s will or mind, but I believe we can do better as a society to help the victims of rape feel safe and know it was not their fault.
I can go on and write a list I came up with in my head on how to help a rape victim, but I quickly realized all can be put into a summary and still explain my whole list. Never blame a rape victim, it is and will never be their fault that they were raped, instead show that you really care about what they are going through, make them realize that their feelings are valid and that they should never have gone through what they did, assist them by encouraging and also helping them seek help and above all love them.

Saftey topic of the month: school shootings and what to do MARJAN HUSSEIN STAFF WRITER “Run, Hide, Fight” is an initiative created by law enforcement agencies for civilians to practice during active shooter situations. In a Business Insider Article (Harrington, 2018), it states that remembering and planning to take three important steps; Run, Hide or Fight is essential to ensuring your survival. Run, Hide or Fight is a prevention measure fabricated to deal with the prevailing shooter situations that are on the rise nationwide. According to the Business Insider article (Harrington, 2018), the measures to take for each step are as follows;
“Run if you can, keeping your hand on or above your head so that first responders can see you’re unarmed. Hide if you’re stuck and stay quiet. Find a good hiding spot, far way from sight and use heavy objects to block off any access to your position if possible. Fight, which should be the last option if confronted by the shooter. Use anything as a weapon, from a coffee mug to a stapler. Keep in mind this is a fight your life, thus do not hold back.” In another article in the New York Times (Hauser, 2018), it states that there is no universal rule dictating what action to take first. There are instances you may find fighting is the better option if you’re cornered by the shooter for instance.
Therefore, using common sense in deadly situations is vital as quick action is key to ensure survival. The New York Times article (Hauser, 2018) states that mass shootings have become so frequent and deadly in the U.S that people should have a contingency plan in place in case the worst happens. University Security Director, Sandi Schorenberg states that two videos are available on the University Security website to educate students on the Run, Hide or Fight Protocol. “The Protocol also applies to dangerous situations where a person feels they could take any of the steps as a measure for self-defense,” Schnorenberg said. Always being situationally aware of your surroundings is
critical to ensure your survival in case of emergency. This entails being ever cognizant of where you are and taking steps to safeguard yourself from any harm such as where knowing where the exits are located inside a building or the safest route to take on your way to work or school. Schnorenberg additionally mentions that due to the increase of active shooters in the country, first responders, technically any law enforcement to first arrive at the scene have their top priority set on stopping the shooter. “Coming from law enforcement myself, I can say that all senses are heightened for first responders during active shooter situations,” Schnorenberg says. “Thus it is important for people running away from the
danger to either show they have no intent to harm the law enforcement personnel or finding a flawless hiding spot and only come out when they are assured the danger has passed.” Schnorenberg states that signing up for the Star Alert notification system for campus community members is an excellent way to get notified in case an emergency occurs. The Run, Hide or Fight protocol is an ideal initiative that should always be at the back of everyone minds in case they find themselves in a dangerous situation. Ensuring your safety is all about preparation and the Run, Hide or Fight protocol presents one with a great technique to avert any type of danger that may pose a threat to their well-being.
Center for Academic Success celebrates MNSU’s tutors MARJAN HUSSEIN STAFF WRITER Tutors are somewhat like everyday heroes as they provide a unique service of which the appreciation for knows no boundaries. Tutors at university level save students college career pathways and prevent them from the dire circumstances that could have unfolded had they not come to their aid. The National Tutoring Week running annually from October 1st-5th presents the ideal occasion to celebrate tutors at the Center for Academic Success (CAS). The National Tutoring Week launched over a decade ago is celebrated at colleges, universities, and private tutoring centers nationwide. The CAS is keen of starting a tradition of celebrating their tutors this year with their theme being ‘Tutors are Heroes’. The Center for Academic Success is the main tutoring hub on campus for math, science, business and writing. Tutoring for other subjects are accepted by request at the CAS, but it mainly focuses on general education courses. Teresa Neubert, Assistant Director of Writing, Speech & Languages at the CAS states that for writing specifically,
aid is provided for papers across the curriculum up to the masters level. The CAS is based in the basement of the Memorial Library. Math, science & business courses have walk in hours at the CAS if a tutor is available, whereas with writing, one is required to set up an appointment as the interaction is a bit more personal. However, walk in hours for writing are available on the first floor of the Memorial Library at scheduled times throughout the week. Online tutoring is also available in case they are not physically present, benefiting both tutor and student as college life can get hectic. Jason Westman, Director of the CAS states that in the early 2000’s the CAS changed from all appointment-based tutoring to walk-in tutoring for all non-writing support. “This greatly increased the number of students we are able to assist,” Westman says, “Over the years, we’ve added walkin writing hours in the library, collaborated with Extended Education to provide online writing support, with Communication Studies to house & train speech tutors, with Computer Information Technology to house and train a number of IT tutors among other initiatives to benefit students.”
Tutor selection is done through an application process online that requires students to submit an unofficial transcript, with a minimum GPA requirement and minimum grade requirements for courses they intend to tutor. Lindsay Stepan, Assistant Director of Math & Business states that faculty recommendations are taken into high consideration as some faculty members feel the need for their courses to have tutors. “There are some gradual changes over time at the CAS and they all incline to suiting the needs for students

are currently seeking tutors as this is a highly gratifying job,” Neubert said. Education revolves around programming your mind to think critically. At times the task may prove to be a too heavy to handle and some assistance may be required. The CAS continues to prove itself an asset to MNSU students aiding them to get through turbulent courses that prove strenuous. This National Tutoring Week, be sure at least give a thankful smile to the amazing tutors at the Center for Academic Success.

The CAS faces a fluctuation in tutors from time to time and currently there is a shortage of tutors. “We

Letter to the editor: Safety-net programs should not be eliminated To The Editor: Over the past 40 years, I have tried to become an expert on Conservative political thought. I believe it is important to share with your readers the one important finding I have learned. There now appears to be a much larger number of conservatives who are essentially “survival-ofthe-fittest” Social Darwinists than there were during the 1950s through 1970s. This means, I believe, that they want to abolish and eliminate all federal government safety-net programs including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Food Stamps, and College Student Loans. You will find many of them in the US Congress within the “House Freedom Caucus,” the old “Tea Party,” and the “Movement-Conservatives.” You will find a heavy dose of such thinking in conservative think-tanks such as “Americans For Prosperity,” “The Heritage Foundation,” and “The Cato Institute.”
While some of these groups are open and transparent about their beliefs, many use hidden stealth tactics to influence opinion and political decision-making. Others can do the same research I have done, and will likely come to the same conclusion. I highly recommend the books “Dark Money” by Jane Mayer and “Democracy In Chains” by Nancy MacLean. Sincerely, Stewart B. Epstein phenom51@mail.com P.S. I wrote this because I do not want to see any of the safety-net programs be abolished/eliminated or cut/reduced. I am a retired college professor of Sociology and Social Work who cared deeply about the well-being of his students. I taught at West Virginia University and Slippery Rock University. It is my hope tht day College Student Loans will be turned into scholarships.

An infor mational presentation about problems of food insecurity within MNSU students was given by Senator Bill Landis. Plans of future goals to fix the problem are still being discussed but for now the focus is on advocating campus resources already available. Senator Samson Akinton brought the issue of health
insurance for international students to the senate and the problems associated with the policy. It is planned to have a representative from Student Health Services come to further talk about the issue. The Emergency Grant Program was brought up to the Senate to remind people to notify any students they may know who are in financial
distress about the program and the services provided. Upcoming campus events were announced such as the Dam Bike Ride to Rapidan on Friday, October 5th. Other events include, the 150th birthday bash in the CSU the following Saturday, as well as the CSET Involvement Fair on Tuesday, October 9th.
Book Excerpt: In Pursuit of Vision by David Oyedepo Vision and Divine Guidance It will perhaps be a good to start off the discussion of the pursuit of vision by explaining what vision and divine guidance means. An understanding of what these two terms actually means would help us see the need for them in our lives. Vision Contrary to what some believe, vision is not that dream one has in the night. Neither is it what transpires in a trance or what obtains in moments of ecstasy. A true vision is the unfolding
of divine plan and purpose. Everyone is created to fulfill a purpose here on earth, just as every manufacturer creates a product specifically to fulfill a purpose. A discovery of the purpose for which you are created is called vision. It is the unfolding of divine plan as it relates to a nation, a group of people or an individual. God revealed His purpose for creating Prophet Jeremiah: Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified
thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV) He also had a purpose for Apostle Paul: But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen… Galatians 1:15-16 (KJV) Jeremiah’s purpose was to be a prophet and Paul, to preach to the heathen. You have a purpose for being here on earth. Do you know what it is yet?

Movie Review: Peppermint
Jennifer Gardner gets revenge in new violent action movie RACHAEL JAEGER STAFF WRITER Peppermint seizes your attention instantly with hearing a struggle from the outside but follows with a cut to inside the car where a man and a woman are fighting. Finally, the woman hisses in the man’s ear, “Do you remember me?” and soon, after a brief brutal struggle, a dead body drops to the ground and a woman steps out of the vehicle. The woman is Riley North (Jennifer Gardner) who seeks justice for her murdered husband Chris (Jeff Hephner) and daughter Carly (Cailey Fleming) after the judge denies her credibility that she witnessed her family being shot to death.

That is the catalyst that drives the rest of the story, as Riley accepts her ice cream and looks up and from there, that shot cuts to another which captures a man who pulls out a long gun and fires from a vehicle. When the man fires, the blasts freeze along with Riley who looks like her
heart has actually stopped. The camera slows time down when it shows Chris and Carley and their ice cream cones falling beside their vehicle. The background details are what especially move her to action and should not be overlooked, especially that she feels beaten down from
her life already. While she has a family who loves her, she desires a better life for them and so she works all the hours she can at her mediocre job. She feels guilty for not spending more time with her family yet she exerts every effort she can which Carly, at a young age, recognizes and thanks
her for. In contrast, Peg (Pell James) and her daughter are dressed alike, both blonde and dressed in white, to symbolize their attitudes of perfection. Peg stays at home and is present at all her daughter’s events, yet disrespects Riley to a point that Carley tells her when they are alone, she “should’ve punched her lights out.” Meanwhile Chris cancels out on the deal that is supposed to change his family’s life but because it is involved with an Italian gang, that is the reason he and Carley die. His partner Mickey was already caught and shot, too. What is amazing is that although one could consider Riley as a villain, she is more

KOLBY SPOMER STAFF WRITER Dearest Kanye, I want to start this letter by saying I am a huge fan. I love your music and think it has been very instrumental in the shaping of modern music as we know it today. I also don’t think you are a bad person at all. But Jesus Christ Kanye, you make it hard to be a fan. This week was the closest I’ve been to ending our relationship. I didn’t stop loving you, and I’ll explain why later, but let’s focus on why I almost did.
Dear Kanye...
This whole thing started when you dropped a snippet of a new song on Twitter, with a release date of Sept. 29. Now this was big news because while you had announced your new album, “Yandhi”, before, this was the first tangible proof of it actually being real. It was also speculated that you would be performing new songs at your SNL performance, because the last time you performed for them, it was to promote your album “The Life of Pablo”. All of this had people including me very excited. Then the show started and you almost ruined it all. Your first performance was literally the worst thing that I have ever seen. You and Lil Pump performed “I Love It”, and it was so, so bad. The singing in general was horrendous, you didn’t even sing parts of the song, and you were dressed up in

the goofiest looking outfits I have ever seen, you as a sparkling water bottle, Pump dressed as still water. To be honest, the whole thing made me love you more because it was so freaking dumb, but you still hadn’t dropped the album, so I was
starting to feel anxious. The next song performed was new, pretty good, and had an okay message. It wasn’t anything special, but it wasn’t anything awful either. So nice job there. At the end of the show, you were allowed a special third
performance. Even though it was an older song, Ghost Town, it still felt like you were

It also happens to each of the gang members and their leader. It is also unclear what will happen to Riley at the closing scene when her own karma kicks back but by this time, you are rooting for her if you haven’t already. There is so much more I could comment about Peppermint but it is one of those films that has so many complex angles. It does take the female role more seriously when it comes to an antihero and when you consider what has made the character who they are. I highly recommend taking the time to attend any of the local theatres and sitting down with your peers afterwards to discuss the film.

When she finds out the boy takes care of his drunk father, she tracks him down in the gas station and puts a bullet in his mouth for a “life-altering moment” and demands for his wallet. It is not to take his money as what would be the initial assumption, but to see where he lives and she swears that she will not spare him a second time. Director Pierre Morel planted a few scenes throughout his film when dead Carly appears as Riley’s conscience and towards the end, Riley knows what she must do. However, it is not as simple or easy as it sounds, and she does not compromise who she is or who she has become in her relentless goal to shed light on a corrupt political system. What is also ironic is that despite Peg’s perfect picture,

KANYE Continued from page 7 going to drop the album. Sadly, halfway through NBC cut you off and I had to watch the rest of the performance on Kim’s instagram. It seemed pretty good, but then you took the mic and cut the music. I had to hop over to Chris Rock’s instagram to catch this, because Kim smartly stopped filming. You took the opportunity to start spewing nonsense about free thinking and how supporting Trump is a smart, wise decision and a whole bunch of other stupid stuff. It made me mad because not only did you not give me the album you promised, but you also made a huge a** of yourself, and then the next day you topped it all in incredible fashion. Instead of releasing the album a day late, you posted a picture of yourself in a “Make America Great Again” hat, stating that it represented unification of the nation, and you called for the abolishment of the 13th amendment. Before we dive into the absolute stupidity of the second part, let us focus on the MAGA hat. This hat does not, in anyway, represent the “unification” of the country. It represents the opposite and will be forever seen as a dark and stupid part of our coun-
try’s history. Now that being said, let’s tackle this whole 13th amendment thing. Kanye, no. The 13th amendment is the amendment that abolished slavery. Abolishing that amendment is an absolute no go, you hair brained idiot. Now, if you had said amend instead of abolish, we would be okay. The law still states that imprisoned individuals can be used for slavery, which I think is kind of immoral and archaic, but no, we aren’t talking about that because you said abolish. You literally are calling for slavery to be reinstituted. You dumb, misinformed, brainwashed parrot boy. I don’t know if you can ever recover from this Kanye. This whole Trump thing is going way too far, and you need someone to tell you to stop right now before you somehow make it worse. At the very least, you need to retract your brainless, stupid 13th amendment statement. I hope you can fix all of this, but until then I cannot and will not support you and one more thing, I am not going to call you Ye, you moron. Sincerely, Ya Boi, Kolby.

Mav Profile: soccer goalkeeper Alexa Rabune
The girl’s soccer team is off to a hot start to the season at 7-1-1, and it’s thanks in part to her fast hand at net
BOBBI PATRICK STAFF WRITER Junior Alexa Rabune, an essential part to the Minnesota State women’s soccer team this season, has one goal for the rest of the season: to help her team reach a national championship title this season. Rabune, who is originally from Cedar Falls, Iowa is the starting goalkeeper for MNSU. Currently, Rabune is studying business management, and was named on the NSIC Fall All-Academic team in 2017. Her fall season was her second season playing for MNSU and she posted a 0-1 record with six saves. Rabune was a 3 year starter and letter-winner for Cedar Falls High School and named
Second Team Mississippi Valley All- Conference Team honors, 3 year starter for Iowa ODP and was selected for the Region II Tournament Team twice. She also played Volleyball for 3 seasons in high school. While Rabune is serious on the field, her and the team also have a fun side to them, as they know how to let loose, and at the same time stay grounded as a team. “Every Halloween, each grade, freshman through senior level, has to come up with a group costume and we all show up to practice in our outfits and vote who has the best outfit. Every year, upperclassmen are also assigned “little sisters”, as a big sister we make the incoming freshman feel welcomed and someone they can go to whenever,” said Rabune. While Rabune has been playing soccer since she was 6 years old, being a part of MNSU is bigger than just her. She is working toward one
Men’s hockey returns on Saturday Night BRADY OLSON STAFF WRITER The MNSU men’s hockey team kicks off the season Saturday, facing a tough exhibition opponent in Mount Royal University at the Verizon Center to kick off the team’s season. Minnesota State is coming off a 29-10-1 season in which they were bounced from the first round of playoffs by the eventual National Champions, Minnesota-Duluth. This year they enter the season with a No. 10 ranking in the power rankings, and have also been ranked as the No. 1 team in the WCHA. Receiving seven out of 10 first place votes in the WCHA Coaches’ Poll, the Mavericks are the preseason favorites to win the conference and head back to the playoffs. and Rabune has been a big part of that, saving a total of 32 shots thus far this season from opponents. Her save percentage is at a .842 and has played 835 minutes thus far, which has improved from the 2017 season where she had a .750 save percentage. Rabune knew from the be-

The first two matches of the trip start this week against Southwest Minnesota State on Friday at 3 p.m. and Sioux Falls on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Mavericks went 2-0 last weekend in their two homecoming conference games, defeating the University of Mary 2-1 in overtime on Friday and Minot State 5-0 on Sunday. Football ready to take their talents to Moorhead
After defeating St. Cloud State on Homecoming, the team looks to tame the Dragons on the road
KOLBY SPOMER STAFF WRITER The 2018 season has been everything the Mavericks have wanted and more. As Minnesota State improved their record to 5-0 last weekend after its 45-10 win over St. Cloud State on Homecoming, they now march to Moorhead, MN to take on the Minnesota State University, Moorhead Dragons. As a team, the Mavericks are averaging 41.8 points and 476.8 yards of offense a game this season. In comparison, opposing teams are only averaging 18.6 points and 307.4 yards of offense a game against the Mavericks this season. One player that has helped the Mavericks this season has been junior tailback Nate Gunn. He has led the MSU rushing attack with 530 rushing yards and nine touchdowns so far on the season. Sophomore tailback Justin Taormina has done his part as a solid change-of-pace back for the team, amassing 228

rushing yards and a touchdown, while fellow sophomore quarterback JD Ekowa has rushed for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Ryan Schlichte has thrown for 846 yards and five touchdowns this season. He is averaging a respectable 169.2 passing yards a game and has completed a cool 63.4% of his passes so far this season. On the other side of the ball, junior Alex Goettl leads the stout Maverick defense with 28 tackles, including 6.5 for a loss and 3.0 sacks. Goettl is also coming off a strong performance against
St. Cloud State, in which he had a fumble recovery for a touchdown and an interception in the game. Because of his performance, he was named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week. Sophomore Chance Bowen has tallied 14 tackles, including six for a loss and five sacks as well. Sophomore Cade Johnson has recorded an impressive 26 tackles, including three for a loss. For the Mavericks, their opponent, the MSU-Moorhead Dragons, are coming off a win against Upper Iowa 17-13 on the road, improving their record to 4-1 on the sea-

a game. Quarterback Jakup Sinani has thrown for 830 yards and eight touchdowns this season, while completing 62% of his passes. Grady Bresnahan has caught a whopping 32 passes for 294 yards and a touchdown, while Jake Richter has caught 24 passes for 454 yards and six touchdowns. Tailback Zach Simons has rushed for a team leading 265 yards and five touchdowns this season. Denver Colgrove complements this, having rushed for 205 yards and a touchdown as well. Aaron Doan has secured a team-best 46 tackles, while Deiondre Taylor has recorded 34 tackles and three interceptions. Darius Woods-Steichen has notched seven tackles for a loss and five sacks as well. The teams will square off against each other in Moorhead, MN this Saturday at 2 p.m.

The environment on the field and off the field is so positive and competitive, which makes practice fun and intense.” This year is the 24th season of the school’s soccer team, with last year being
the team’s 11th appearance in the NCAA tournament last year. “I love the game because I love being a part of a team all working together towards one goal, a national championship,” said Rabune. The Mavericks are coming off a big weekend of game, defeating both the University of Mary 2-1 on Friday and Minot State 5-0 on Sunday. Rabune and the Mavericks will be in action again this weekend, as they face off against the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs on the road on Friday at 3 p.m., and then finish off the weekend with a matchup with the Sioux Falls Cougars on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Mavericks are 9-1 in their last ten preseason exhibitions, and weirdly enough the exhibition game has, as of late, been a barometer for success in the regular season. The 2014-15 season where MNSU was a No. 1 seed at regionals started with a 12-1 win over Trinity Western,
while the 21-13-7 season from 2015-16 started with a loss to Regina. The game will start at 7:07 p.m. on Saturday at the Verizon Center. The Mavericks will start the regular season on Oct. 12 and 13 when 8th ranked Boston University comes to Mankato.

Their second opponent, Sioux Falls, went 1-1 last week losing to Bemidji State 1-0 on Friday and defeating Minnesota Crookston 1-0 on Sunday to bring their record up to a weak 4-6. The Cougars are 3-2 at home this season, with their last win coming against Northern State on Sept. 23. In the history of the matchup, MSU is undefeated against Sioux Falls, winning all eight games. Vikings face do-or-die situation in Philly AARON YOUNG STAFF WRITER Heading into week five of the NFL season, the Minnesota Vikings have had quite the season. They kicked off the season with a victory against a victory the 49ers. What followed was a tie with archrivals Green Bay Packers, where we found ourselves on the edge if our seats all the way to the end. Vikings and Packers fans alike will have to wait until November 25th to see who wins bragging rights this year. After a win and a tie, Vikings came back home to face one of the worst teams in the NFL this year, the Buffalo Bills. Everyone thought Minnesota would win but they didn’t, losing 27-6. Then, the Purple and Gold found themselves 1-21 after a close game against the undefeated Los Angeles Rams. Kirk Cousins showed up to play but so did Jared Goff. Goff showed the world why the Rams shouldn’t be

messed with. The offense has finally clicked, or at least Kirk Cousins found his potential. He has proven he is worth his contract. RB Dalvin Cook was shaky with a recovering ACL and injury scare against the Rams. Three WR’s in Adam
Thielen, Stefon Diggs, and newly signed Aldrick Robinson. The rest of WR’s haven’t been given the green light. The offensive line many would say is the biggest area of improvement. Constantly plagued with injuries and unable to prevent sacks or tack-
les for loss. I can’t imagine what Mike Zimmer is feeling. He has the heart and mind for the game, but everyone knows he is all business and is the coach for the Vikings because he is hungry for success and doesn’t mess around.
The Minnesota Vikings now turn to their attention to the Philadelphia Eagles. An NFC championship rematch where the Vikings have the chance to redeem themselves. In the NFC championship, the Eagles were led by Nick Foles, who torched Minnesota’s defense and took the Eagles to the Super Bowl where they won. This time around it’s Carson Wentz’s turn to show the NFL what he is made of. In one week, the Vikings will look to become 2-2-1. I projected them to lose only three games this year and now I and second-guessing myself. The NFL is turning upside down as a whole. The Dolphins lead the AFC North, not the Patriots although I expect that to change. The Raiders, Texans and Cardinals are winless while the Chiefs and Rams are undefeated. The Vikings find themselves in a tough division and even tougher conference, so it’s anybody guess who will be in the Super Bowl come this February. That is for another time and day. As for now, turn on the TV’s and watch your Minnesota Vikings whenever they are playing. SKOL!
