2019 MNSU Homecoming royalty crowned MARIA LY STAFF WRITER Ten homecoming court participants eagerly awaited as former homecoming king, Eric Cox, tauntingly hovered the crowns above each contestant’s heads during the lip sync battle, Thursday, October 3.

With hands held tightly with each other, Cox finally crowned Ben Dorweiler representing Julia Sears as homecoming king.

Sophia Hoiseth, who was also on the homecoming court and a proud Community Advisor along with Ben for Julia Sears couldn’t contain her excitement as she immediately jumped and cheered for her friend.

When it came down to

crowning homecoming queen, little did she know that she would have a crown on her head too.

Sophia says, “Seeing Ben get crowned first, I was so excited. And you can watch the video back, I lose it and I have to pull myself together. And I was like whatever happens happens, as long as Ben won because he put so much work into homecoming so it made me feel like we won in sears and then I feel the crown sinking onto my head and I was like ‘you’re kidding!’”

For the two homecoming royalty, winning the title means much more to them than a college tradition.

College of Business Involvement Fair gets studets involved EMILY ERCK STAFF WRITER The College of Business held a Student Engagement Fair on Oct. 3 from 2-5 p.m. at the south and center CSU ballroom.

Many students attended and were greeted by more than a dozen booths of eager businessmen and businesswomen wanting to help them discover their full potential and plans in the business world.

Many different majors were represented at the event including marketing, management, international business, finance, business analytics, business law and accounting. Two graduate programs were also represented including a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Accounting.

Business classes attended the event, as well as First Year Seminar classes. All students were eager to learn about different events, clubs, and local businesses wanting to enhance their college and career experiences. One of the businesses that represented themselves at this event was United Prairie Bank.

Ben was initially inspired to join the homecoming royalty to add a memory to his senior year and to celebrate his accomplishments.

Ben says, “The truth is I ran last year for it, just to be part of the American culture.

I am an international student, we don’t have homecoming in my country period, so I saw an opportunity to be more part of American culture and the MSU community so I participated last year.”

He continues, “I told myself that this was going to be my best year yet, I switched areas and now I’m in sears, I dedicated a lot of time and made sure the sears squad is represented with homecoming stuff. I realized it’s ok to sometimes recognize myself, it’s ok to nominate myself for homecoming royalty court. I want to show everybody that despite where you’re from you can end on the highest note.”

rience (IBE). IBE’s personal statement and goal is to allow students to combine a suite of required courses into a semester-long real-world entrepreneurial experience that gives them a head-start on their business careers.

As they work together to apply their knowledge to planning, launching and operating an actual business, the students gain the leadership skills, entrepreneurial mindset and hands-on experience that employers look for in new hires. Once each

student has prepared their own personal business plan, they present it to United Prairie Bank to obtain a real loan.

Once they have received the loan, they continue the rest of the semester marketing their business and selling it. Once they have repaid their loan, the rest of the proceeds they make go to a charity of their choice.

Another organization that represented themselves at this event was the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. This group holds many

She at first refused due to her misconception that she had to wear a dress, but after her hall director told her she didn’t have to, she was immediately on board.

Sophia says, “It was just a chance to showcase the things that I’ve done as a student here and to try to inspire other students to do that too and help out my team.”

To become homecoming royalty, the contestant is judged on three things equating to 30% each of the competition: attendance to homecoming events, the interview, and the student body vote.

Ben and Sophia worked hard, with Ben attending every single homecoming event minus the blood drive.

All the hard work was worth it. As homecoming royalty, from what is known from past winners, the two will have their own separate float in the parade, they will be able to start the bonfire in next year’s homecoming, they get to walk halftime on the football field, and they also get to crown the next homecoming royalty.

For Ben and Sophia, being homecoming royalty means to them a representation of all the hard work that they have done in their time here.

Sophia says, “It’s crazy to look back at all the things that I’ve done, and it’s a moment to be proud of it and to show that it’s not just for late nights and good grades and making a difference, it’s a chance to showcase the university and showcase the work that I’ve done here.”

Ben says, “Having this title means, recognition and confirmation of me cemented in the culture, and having my life established here. It just shows that I found my family on this side of the world here, and it’s a foundation I hope to build on in the future.”

The two are both graduating soon and walking during the spring ceremony.

They encourage all students to start getting involved on campus whether that be joining an RSO, doing volunteer work, or something simple as joining the homecoming court.

Sophia says, “Getting engaged, and getting involved is the best way to be a college student.”

events throughout the year, including a few that are coming up soon. These events include the Women Entrepreneurship Week, which is Oct. 21-25.

There is also another event throughout Nov. 18-22 called Global Entrepreneurship Week. This event is designed to inspire future entrepreneurs, foster connections, and increase collaboration across all ecosystems. There will be talks about how to create small businesses and the kick-off for the Big Ideas Challenge.

Lastly, the organization holds one of their biggest events of the year: Student Pop Up Store. The Student

Pop Up Store is a high school and university student entrepreneurs table where students can sell their products or services. Anyone can sign up to join for this school-wide event on Nov. 30 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The College of Business has many other ways for students to get involved and many other activities and clubs they can join, besides the few mentioned. They are encouraged to look into all of the opportunities that the College of Business provides, as well as the opportunities that students have created for others.

College tutors honored during National Tutoring Week at MNSU MICHAEL MCSHANE NEWS EDITOR It’s National Tutoring Week and Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Tutoring Center is taking this chance to thank every one of their tutors that has taken time out of their day to help other students succeed.

The MNSU Tutoring Center, which employs more than 50 employees, will be celebrating National Tutoring Week with a party to recognize the tutors.

“National Tutoring Week is a way to appreciate the work that our tutors do and thank them for the support they give to this campus,” Lindsay Stepan, the assistant director of math, science and business, said.

Tutoring can be a very challenging and complex job in which tutors take on the responsibility of answering questions from students.

The busiest time for tutors are midterms and the end of

the semester finals.

“We always tell our tutors that their job is to do their best, they don’t have to know everything about everything,” Teresa Neubert, the assistant director for Writing, ESL, Speech, Languages, said.

At MNSU, tutors work part-time, working five to 20 hours a week. There are people who go by the term “professional tutor” who work 40 hours a week.

While MNSU doesn’t have any “professional tutors”, they have dedicated tutors who take on the challenge of answering questions and helping solve problems.

The tutors at MNSU are graduate assistants and undergrad peer tutors. Every single MNSU tutor has to have a 3.0 and an “A” in the class they are tutoring. Every tutor is paid for their work at the Tutoring Center.

With that rule applied, if a tutor has As in multiple different courses, they can tutor all of those courses as long as

they retain that A in the classes.

The subject most in need at the tutoring center is chemistry tutors. Currently there are only four students who tutor in chemistry.

“My goal for chemistry tu-

toring is a lot more than that,” Stepan said. “It is one of our most demanded subjects.

For the tutors they do have, the MNSU Tutoring Center will be having a dinner party for tutors only to celebrate their involvement at the

center.

Cake will also be available for any students coming into the tutoring center. Students wishing to become a tutor can fill out a form from the Center for Academic Success on the MNSU website.

Panel discusses the dangers of excessive drinking OLAYINKA GBOLAHAN STAFF WRITER As homecoming was approaching, the Minnesota State University Student Health Services found it important to host a strategic townhall titled Lowering the Risk: Alcohol and Safety Panel in order to educate and inform students on the consequence and safety measures.

The event kickoff with a welcome statement from the moderator Gloria Diaz who laid emphases that the panel is was determined to provide general information and not specific legal representation.

She continued by establishing the structure of the event which would be conducted by asking the panelist questions then opening it up to the audience.

The panelist included; Todd Coryell from the Blue Earth County Attorney office who has prosecuted various related offenses, Officer Stephanie Wilkins a police officer with the Mankato Department of Public Safety and MNSU Campus Resource Officer, Thad Shuckwiler a professor in the Department of Health Science and a license mental health professional, Linda Alvarez the director of the Equal Opportunity and Title IX who deals with investigation matters of non-dis-

crimination and sexual violence for students and employee, Laura Schultz the director of Violence Awareness Response Program whose roles are to be a confidential advocate for students who have been victims of relationship violence, harassment, sexual assault and violence, facilitating a support group and educating and event programming, Lastly, Julia Hamann a Blue Earth County Community legal advocate for the Community Against Domestic Assault.

Now that everybody is introduced, the moderator asked the first question to the panelist, “What are the potential health consequence of alcohol consumption?”

Thad answered by stating that there are two major consequences; behavioral consequences and Physiological consequences. He then expanded that the consequences are dose dependent meaning the more one consumes, the greater the consequences. He stated the chronic physiological consequences being heart disease, cirrhosis of the lever and various cancer risk. Acute consequences like overdose and alcohol poisoning, he got technical with what alcohol overdose means, which by increase in alcohol dosage into the body start disrupting the function of the central nervous sys-

tem and the medulla cortex of the brain. He also stated the range of alcohol toxicity, from vomiting which is a reaction of the medullar trying to eject the alcohol and to passing out to dying which in most cases is suffocation. He also advice that by the point

of vomiting, it is time to stop drinking and an unconscious state means is a medical emergency. Lastly behavioral toxicity, which is as a result of alcohol disruption to prefrontal cortex of the brain which would result to bad decision like addiction to alcohol, fall-

ing, fighting and in most cases car accidents.

How to make sure costumes will be culturally appropriate

REPORTER ARCHIVES It’s that time of year again.

Yes, this is the time when we can dress up as whatever character we want to. People like me cannot wait for this day to know what we and our friends will dress like.

But first, before we pick out our costumes, we should ask ourselves: Is it culturally appropriate?

Cultural appropriation, according to the Cambridge English dictionary, is “the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture.”

The costume you’ve chosen may be offensive to someone from that culture; because of this, cultural appropriation has been a heated debate during the month of October. Examples of cultural appropriation that could go wrong include: wearing a traditional Native American garb; painting your face/other body parts to look like an African or other people from a different race; wearing a hijab; wearing a sari; or dressing like a gypsy. These are not costumes, they are other people’s culture and religion that is valued by them. It may also have a great significance in their

culture, which they respect.

When people start dressing as individuals from another culture for Halloween, it dehumanizes the people from that culture. It shows that you do not respect their culture and you are also disrespecting the people of that culture.

Wearing a mask or dressing like skeletons, demons, devils, unicorns, princesses, fairies, and cartoon characters are better costumes to wear for Halloween. (They are in fact also the traditional way to dress for Halloween.) Then you are not disrespecting anybody or any culture.

With all of this it can be hard to find a costume for Halloween because you may not want to be disrespectful to people from other cultures by wearing clothes and accessories from their culture which can be offensive to them. It is good to ask questions about the costume that you want to wear—could it be disrespectful to people of that culture?

If you have questions, Minnesota State University, Mankato has great resource centers for you to go ask, such as the Multicultural Center in the CSU. You can also look it up online or maybe if you know someone from that

culture, you can ask them.

Doing this will keep you on the safe side and not bring bad attention to yourself, especially if the costume you are wearing shows a huge significance in that culture or it is an everyday outfit for people of that culture.

People from all cultures have feelings and for them to see people using their cultural dressing as a Halloween costume can hurt their feelings.

You do not want to be portrayed as being disrespectful. You can appreciate other people’s culture but try to not appropriate other people’s cultures.

I am not a perfect person and you would not believe how long it took me to accept that.

Perfectionism is, in my opinion, an ugly word. It a word that symbolizes a lie that we try and tell ourselves – that we can be perfect and anything less is unacceptable.

We all have to live with the little imperfections we are given in life. They may come in the form of a disability or lack of skill in a certain area.

You could be socially awkward, or a bookworm. You could be interested in something that might be weird to others around you. All of these could affect our perception of how “perfect” we are compared to others.

Don’t do that! Speaking from experience, never try to compare your life to someone else. The damage that very idea can cause a person is deafening. It can cause self-esteem issues that could never be solved because you can’t suddenly be like another person. Self-esteem issues turn into self-loathing which in turn becomes We shouldn’t strive for perfection because of two reasons. One, it’s unobtainable, the moment you try to perfect yourself you’ve already lost the fight.

Second, you shouldn’t even try to begin with. I said previously that perfection is an ugly word because the word makes us believe we could be better than what we are. We are not perfect and that is perfectly okay.

For many years I’ve lived with the idea that I could have had a more perfect life if I was different, or that I didn’t make so many mistakes in the past. That was the wrong outlook and the wrong mindset to have about yourself.

You shouldn’t shun away the part of you that makes you “not perfect” in the eyes of either yourself or others.

Self-esteem comes in all shapes and sizes and everyone can have a different idea on what “perfection” means to them, but at the end of the day you are you and that should be enough. It sounds clithe, but saying you’re perfect the way you are is not a false statement and you should believe it when you say it in the mirror.

Linda answered saying, that you can call Campus Security who would go through your options of contacting police, CADA, VARP and you would not get in trouble.

Julia answered that CADA offers a 24/7 service line to help you navigate the problem in any capacity. Also, alcohol and drug facilitated can be have a vague report because information can be lost due to influence and

trauma.

Laura emphasized the idea of feeling comfortable to report your story at your own time and it is normal to wait because on average, reports are made 6 months after event. She also added a statement of encouragement to victims who the first person they might have shared their story to was not supportive, they would be a lot of people that would be supportive and would believe you.

A question from the audience, If I tell a friend my story on sexual violence and it gets reported to law enforcement, would I be contacted or how would law enforcement go about it?

Stephanie answered that if it was reported to her, she would ask the person reporting to inform their friend to

come and report it themselves when their ready and remind her of all the supportive resources available.

From the audience, how much is a ticket for underage drinking and if I get multiple, do the price go up or do I get sent to jail?

Todd answered that an underage consumption is a misdemeanor offense and it is punishable by a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail or a fine of $1000. It is treated as a payable offense if the only offense is underage consumption which is a ticket of $179 from law enforcement or a filed report from the attorney’s office. Multiple underage consumption of criminal offense may lead to jail time, probation programming determined by a chemical use assessment and so on.

when reporting to an alcohol scene, the determination of where the victim would be sent is based on an accessing procedure through question and evaluation. She stated that if victims have been found unconscious or vomiting it is a medical emergency case or in a case where victim cannot care for themselves or they can walk then they would be sent to detox. Detox which law enforcement is the number one referral, upon entry they remove string anything you might harm yourselves with. A withdrawal assessment is conducted every 4 hours in the first 24 hours, every shift on second day and discharge on third day with a ride schedule for pickup. They provide medication, treatment, entertainment, meals and snacks at a cost of $439 a day.

Thad added that the detox facility is not a vacation spot and it is serious because it is as a result of high alcohol consumption which is a medical emergency.

Todd added that a release from detox might be a straight way to jail, because the attorney’s office investigates for criminal offenses after a referral from the sheriff’s office and depending on the verdict of the judge might lead to some conditional consequence like no possession of alcohol substances, monetary bail and so on.

A student asked how those Minnesota Amnesty law works?

Medical Amnesty answered by Todd is an immunity from prosecution. It states that medical amnesty would be granted to the first individual to report and cooperate to law enforcement during an alcohol medical emergency.

The Campus Medical Amnesty?

Answered by Lydia, Similar to the state is the first person to call for help, the victim and co-operative witness is immune from sanctions and disciplinary, but must meet someone from student conduct office, complete a free alcohol prevention and education course and for the next 6months those conduct an alcohol related offense.

Laura expanded that a victim of sexual assault victims related to alcohol consumption gets medical amnesty.

She also emphasized that victims should always remember that it is not their faults.

Julia added that in situations like this, law enforcement is more interested in the sexual

KYLE provides Mavs with Super Duper Homecoming ALYSSA BUNDE STAFF WRITER While we didn’t get our homecoming bonfire/fireworks again, the MNSU student body did get a super duper concert. This year’s performance was “iSpy” rapper/hip-hop artist Super Duper KYLE, or KYLE for short, and he came with high-spirits, songs to please, and a hyped opener.

The show began around 7:30 p.m. Friday and was upbeat from the beginning.

Rapper and opener Iyaz was a blast from the past, sending everyone back to their awkward middle school days with throwbacks like “SOLO” and “Replay”. It was difficult to pinpoint whether the crowd knew who KYLE was or cared about the opener Iyaz, but it was clear that everyone was present to have a good time.

Minnesota State University, Mankato junior Brianna Mandersheid shared her thoughts of the concert. He said, “Hearing “Replay” took me back to middle school dances in a good way. I also thought KYLE did a good job at hyping up the crowd.”

Soon after Iyaz finished and the crowd grew bored of chatting with their neighbors, they started chanting for KYLE to come out. Ask and you shall receive. KYLE enthusiastically sprung to the stage and reminded everyone that his goal was to make sure everyone left with a smile.

However, MNSU student and KYLE fan Aliana Kell likely left with a bigger smile than most. The rapper at one point shouted out the student for being cool and even bowed to her. Kell commented on the encounter and said, “This concert was ultimately an experience I’ll never forget and made my homecoming amazing, and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without being part of the student events team here on campus.”

MNSU student and concert chair of the Student Events team Brandon Weideman explained the lengthy process of finding a homecoming performer. Weideman stated the team started searching in March, and made offer after offer until they finally found KYLE. Despite the long work the concert chair was please

with how the event turned out. He explained, “Overall, I thought the event was a success. People had a great time, the production and artists were amazing, and I am so proud of all the hard work that our team put into it.”

KYLE’S performance was bubbly and filled with personality. He took time to speak with the crowd calling out fans

for being super, had Fortnite graphics playing in the background, and performed even the lesser-known songs with a smile. While in the crowd I heard random comments calling him goofy. However, as a KYLE fan, I know his whole thing is being corny or goofy and not caring because he just wants to make others smile. Afterall, anyone who

raps about being into Pikachu obviously has moved past caring if the people in the crowd think he’s a little weird.

MNSU student Ammar Mohammed also commented on the performance. He said, “The organization and set up was great but the performance should have been much better.”

The only complaint I have

with the concert was that it felt remotely short and as a long-time KYLE fan I was disappointed that he didn’t sing more of his early songs. As a whole though, this concert was one of my favorite Homecoming concerts. Therefore, to anyone upset about KYLE being the Homecoming performer, at least he showed up, unlike Fetty Wap...too soon?

Shinedown shocks a sold-out Civic Center LIDIA VASSAR STAFF WRITER

Sunday night was a great night for music fans who got to snag tickets to the Shinedown concert at the Mankato Civic Center.

Accompanied by Papa Roach, Asking Alexandria, and Savage After Midnight, the show was a series of charismatic performances, and the Mankato Civic Center was packed with excited fans. There were quite a few kids in the crowd headbanging just as hard as everyone else, which made it that much more fun.

All four bands made sure to engage the crowd. Time flew by without a decrease in quality from any performance.

There was a quite a bit of inspirational talk and emphasis on community, which was unexpected but welcome. While I’m sure many people came to the show to see a particular band, I would be surprised if anyone left unsatisfied with the other performers.

The convention center had a large assortment of band merch, from t-shirts and hoodies to guitar picks and drumsticks. Lucky fans near the stage didn’t have to buy these items, since the bandmembers were throwing their used ones off the stage. At some point a water bottle was tossed out to the crowd.

Papa Roach really made fans happy when lead vocalist Jacoby Shaddix went running through the crowds. He managed to simultaneously sing and climb various obstacles while never missing a beat.

The light crew did a fantastic job keeping up with him, not to mention programming some incredible visual effects for all of the performances.

The members of Papa Roach were going ham on their stage equipment, riling up the crowd with their jumping.

How they could maintain that level of energy for an hour straight is baffling.

Taking over at the end of the night with an hour and a half long performance, Shinedown also really went above and beyond when it came to energy levels. Not to mention their stage setup was crazy cool. There was an intermission to set everything up between sets, and Shinedown entered with the drop of a curtain and some insane pyrotechnics. I could feel the heat from them, and I was in the risers. By the end of the night I could have sworn I was going deaf in my right ear from just how loud each fiery

explosion was. The more violent pyrotechnics were broken up by smaller fireworks. The television screens hanging from the ceiling conveniently created exclamation marks to match the “ATTENTION ATTENTION” album cover.

Some songs had specific videos playing on the screens.

Shinedown played songs from multiple albums, including “All I Ever Wanted” from their debut album “Leave a Whisper”, “Sound of Madness” from the album of the same name, and “Amaryllis” (from “Amaryllis”). The audience sang along to both the old and the new, lighting up their phone flashlights for the slower songs. The presentation of their new tracks was fantastic, and their theme was very polished. How can you not look like pros when you wear full suits onstage?

Broadway theater will turn into a cinema for “The Irishman”

NEW YORK (AP) — Broadway will be turning back the clock next month when it converts one of its august theaters into a movie theater and starts screenings of Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman.”

Netflix is going to put up a screen in the Belasco Theatre and show the movie on the Broadway model of

eight performances a week — Tuesday through Sunday evenings, with matinees on Saturday and Sunday from Nov. 1-Dec 1.

The Belasco has been empty since the play “Network” ended its run in June.

Its next tenant will be “Girl from the North Country” in March. Broadway producers

lately have been creative about using the theater spaces when vacant, including programing concerts, magic shows and improv performances.

While unprecedented these days, turning the 1,000-seat Belasco into a movie house is an echo from the past. Almost every

Broadway theater that is still standing was converted to showing movies, recording radio broadcasts, or being used as a TV recording studio at some point in Times Square’s seedier days, says Tim Dolan, a Broadway historian who is owner of the Broadway Up Close Walking Tours Inc.

The mobster flick “The Irishman” stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. It represents a big risk for Netflix, which ponied up $159 million to make “The Irishman” after other studios passed.

Thousands show up for free Kanye West “service” in Utah SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Thousands of people showed up to an outdoor shopping center in Utah to see rapper Kanye West perform what he calls a worship service.

Saturday’s concert was held right before the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held its twice-yearly conference in Salt Lake City.

West took the stage late in his worship service and performed one song — “Jesus Walks,” from his 2004 album “The College Dropout.”

Afterward, the Salt Lake Tribune reported that West prayed and testified to the crowd about his religious journey.

He also talked politics and what he called the dangers of social media.

The Deseret News reported that between 7,000 and 10,000 people attended the event.

West has been traveling the country holding these church-like concerts that include choir singers and other musicians.

Mavs dominate UMD in big Division II fooball game Nate Gunn breaks Mavericks all-time rushing record in Homecoming victory ANDREW NEURURER SPORTS EDITOR Week five on the Mavericks schedule was highlighted as a big game. It was a game in which the No. 3 and No. 12 teams in Division II football faced off.

The importance of the game was high, it was Homecoming weekend and there were over 6,000 fans present to watch a 52-7 dominating victory over the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.

The Mavericks offense was at the top of their game, putting up a season high 52 points.

More importantly, it was senior Ryan Schlichte’s breakout game. This season he has struggled to get things going offensively, with 36.4% being his best completion percentage in week one against Southwest Minnesota State.

Against Minnesota-Duluth, he went 9-for-17, with 198 yards and three touchdowns – which was the best performance for a quarterback on either side.

Junior quarterback JD Ekowa threw just six passes but completed four of them for 88 yards and a touchdown.

Senior Nate Gunn became MSU’s all-time rushing leader with 3,991 yards. He followed up that accomplishment with a big game, adding 147 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Redshirt freshman Kaleb Sleezer also had a big game, gaining 76 yards a touchdown on the ground.

Because MSU had such great success passing the ball, wide receiver Shane Zylstra had a great day. He added 220 yards and three touchdowns, with his longest being an 80-yard touchdown to start the game.

For the fourth straight week, the Mavericks defense held its opponents to under 10 points.

Senior Zach Robertson led the way with seven tackles, one of those being a sack. He continues to dominate and leads the Mavericks in tackles this season.

Redshirt freshman Nic Dahlke added two sacks, causing UMD to get pushed back by 17 yards.

It was a big game for both the defense and offense who found a lot a success against the No. 12 team in the country.

After a two-game homestand, the Mavericks will head to Aberdeen, South Dakota to take on the Northern State Wolves this Saturday.

MSU swim and dive defeats Division I team MEL STRAMM STAFF WRITER The Mavericks swimming and diving team opened its home season with a win against University of South Dakota Friday, Oct. 4. This is MSU’s first win against the Coyotes in a meet since 2013 and marked a victory over a Division I team.

With a score of 151.5-148.5, the Mavericks were able to take both relays and nine out of the 14 events in total.

Sophomores Anja Enervold, Emily Goodman, Katie Streiff and senior Maggie Knier, beat South Dakota in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:47.40. Then again Knier, Enervold, and sophomores Nikki Ault and Grace Gavronski took the 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.13.

“We had a strong lead and then they started to catch us.

We were up by five points, there was a ton of high energy and both teams hit the wall. We looked up to the

scoreboard and each team saw a one by their name and started celebrating before realizing that we tied for first.

As we were trying to figure out who had won, the score updated showing that we had won by three points,” Knier said about the 200-meter freestyle relay.

It was a truly great meet for Knier who was able to add two individual wins to the relays, finishing the 50-meter freestyle with 24.64, as well as 54.16 in the 100-meter freestyle.

Goodman and Streiff also added individual wins for the Mavericks, with Streiff taking the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 58.77 and Goodman finishing the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:23.74. With 1:06.52 in the 100-meter breaststroke Goodman also won second place in that category.

Junior Emelia Selky also took the 1,000-meter freestyle event for the Mavericks, with a time of 10:59.38.

For the freshmen, it was Ni-

cole Beckman who was able to take her first Maverick win, with 2:14.91 in the 200-meter butterfly.

Freshman Ayla Taylor then

won the 1-meter diving event, with a 234.00 score.

Senior Jaycie Klein finished fourth in the 3-meter diving event, with a score of 204.25.

Soccer splits the away series against U-Mary and Minot State ANDREW NEURURER SPORTS EDITOR The Mavericks soccer team suffered its first loss Sept. 29 in a double overtime game against St. Cloud State. Since then, the Mavericks looked to get back on track this past weekend against University of Mary Marauders and Minot State Beavers.

The team took on U-Mary on Oct. 4, hoping they could get back on a winning streak.

Looking on recent history against the Marauders, it was a game that could almost be penciled in as a win. The Mavericks are 12-0-2 and were riding a nine-game winning streak.

That wasn’t the case as U-Mary won its first game against the Mavericks 2-1.

The Marauders took a twogoal lead and left MSU stranded to try and make a late game comeback.

Senior Bri Ciaccio scored her first goal of the season in the 89th minute of the game, assisted by junior Molly Sarafolean.

Minnesota State would fall to 6-2 after this game and was looking to get back in the winning column on Oct. 6

against the Beavers.

That they did, winning the game comfortably 5-2.

Sophomore Brynn Desens added to her breakout season, getting her sixth goal of the season on a penalty kick.

Continuing her success from U-Mary, Ciaccio found the net for her second goal of the season in the 12th minute.

After getting out to a twogoal lead, Minot State was able to get in the scoring column, making it 2-1.

The Mavericks answered back quickly, scoring three minutes later from sophomore Nadia Lowery. This was her second goal of the season, last getting one in the 6-0 victory over Upper Iowa on Sept. 22. Lowery was assisted from sophomore Jenny Vetter.

After gaining the assist, Vetter scored a goal of her own seven minutes later. She would later assist again for her second of the day, after junior Molly Riley cashed in on her first goal of the season.

MSU stands in at 7-2 after splitting the away trip. They will look to take the full sweep at home this weekend against Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls.

Men’s hockey wins exhibition game, women’s falls short over Gophers AARON YOUNG STAFF WRITER This past weekend, both the Minnesota State men’s and women’s hockey teams were in action. For the men, it was their first game of the season, an exhibition against the Mount Royal Cougars. For the ladies, they took on No. 2 ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers.

On Saturday, the girls would fall to the Golden Gophers 6-0. Minnesota State was dominated from the start. The Gophers scored six minutes into the game when Crystalyn Hengler shot a laser through traffic past Maverick freshman Abigail Levy.

The Gophers took advantage of a power play and lit the sirens up from junior winger Grace Zumwinkle, just over 11 minutes into the game, putting the Gophers up 2-0.

With under 10 minutes to go in the second the Mavs had an own goal, when a skater tipped in into the net.

Taylor Heise was credited for the goal.

In the third, it was all Minnesota with three goals on the board from senior Alex Woken, Heise and Zumwinkle.

Both Heise and Zumbwinkle had goals 30 seconds apart

midway through.

Minnesota State was outshot 34-to-16, with junior Brittyn Fleming leading the team in shots with 4.

After the game, coach John Harrington responded to the loss, saying, “I was just disappointing in our compete level and our push effort in the third period of the game.”

He also mentioned the own goal in the second period and how they tried to get it out of the zone instead.

In the second game, the Golden Gophers lit up the scoreboard early, scoring twice in the first with Heise and Catie Skaja capitalizing. Heise added another goal in the third and Woken also found the back of the net twice, scoring in the first and third period. Minnesota wound up with seven goals on the night, defeating Minnesota State 7-1.

Charlotte Aversive scored the Mavericks only goal of the series late in the third period on a four-on-four situation.

Coach Harrington was impressed with her play as he stated in a press conference after the game.

Even though the game was lopsided, the amount of shots both teams took were close with the Mavericks at 32 and

Gophers with 39. Minnesota State is now 2-2 on the year.

From the women to the men’s game, the No. 3 ranked Mavericks opened the year with a 5-2 exhibition victory against Mount Royal.

Volleyball losing skid continues over the weekend JENNA PETERSON STAFF WRITER

The Mavericks volleyball team attempted to come up with a game plan for their weekend games but seemed to fall short of those expectations.

On Oct. 4, the Mavericks took on Wayne State and the fight was difficult early on.

The first set started with a consistent trading of points, until the Wildcats broke out in a 3-0 run to take the lead.

A timeout was taken to allow players a short break to strategize. Wayne State continued its run and won the set 25-13.

The Mavericks fought hard in the second set and showed they wanted to win by keeping the score close and not allowing the Wildcats to take a drastic lead in the beginning.

Wayne State started to take a lead and although the Mavericks took a timeout to figure things out, the Wildcats were still able to take another set with a score of 25-22.

The third and final set quickly went to the Wildcats, who took an early lead and won 25-18.

Saturday’s match up against Augustana was another hard battle for the Mavericks. The first set was the closest of the three. It seemed as if the Mav-

ericks were going to get a win after a long losing streak, but after a back and forth struggle between the two teams, Augustana rang up three of the last four points and won 25-23.

MSU continued their hard fight in the second set and

took a lead after some time.

Once the score was tied at 21, the Vikings scored four points in a row and won 25-21.

The third set wasn’t much of a game due to the Vikings dominating the court and winning 25-19.

Janzig and Haley Shimon led the Mavericks offensively with nine kills, while at the same time Schindler finished the game with 33 assists.

The next Mavericks volleyball game will be Friday night in Mankato, against Sioux Falls.

Jones engineered since replacing Eli Manning at quarterback. The Vikings gained 490 yards on offense, including 211 rushing, and took a knee inside the New York 5 to end the game.

The Vikings defense limited New York to 211 yards, sacked Jones four times and hit him countless other times.

The Defense also chipped in with a safety when linebacker Anthony Barr tackled Jon Hilliman in the end zone after New York recovered Cook’s fumble at the 1.

Cousins touchdown passes covered 15 and 9 yards to Thielen, who complained about the one-sidedness of the offense after a two-catch, 6-yard game against Chicago. He finished with seven catches for 130 yards.

The 15-yard, second-quarter touchdown pass capped a 98-yard drive and gave Minnesota a 10-0 lead. The shorter toss ended a 67-yard drive after New York got to 18-10 in the third quarter.

“I feel great. It was huge for the team, huge for the locker room,” said Cook after failing to score a touchdown for the first time this season. “It’s been a long week, there’s been a lot trying to separate us and I think that just brought us more close

as a group. I’m just proud of the guys with the way they fought back, blocked that outer noise and came in here and played in a hostile environment.”

Dan Bailey hit field goals of 31, 48, 32 and 45 yards for Minnesota, which scored on four of its six possessions in the first half. The fifth ended in a fumble inside the 5-yard line and the sixth on a last play Hail Mary.

Jones finished 21 of 38 for 182 yards and an interception. He threw a 35-yard yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to fellow rookie Darius Slayton , getting New York to 10-7.

The No. 6 pick overall gave the Vikings’ defense credit, admitting there wasn’t as much space to run or time to throw on some plays. He also said he needs to make plays and there were chances he missed, including two throws to Sterling Shepard that might have been scores.

“It’s never a good feeling when you lose,” Jones said.

“I have been on teams where we have lost and I have certainly lost games before.

You learn from it and it’s an opportunity to improve.

It’s never a good feeling to lose.”

Bailey added two field

goals after Jones’ TD pass and Barr got his safety, pushing the lead to 18-7.

Aldrick Rosas pulled the Giants to 18-10 with 32-yard field goal that capped a 15-play drive that opened the second half, but Cousins and Thielen connected again as the Vikings ended a five-game skid in outdoor stadiums.

THIELEN REBOUNDS Thielen has a habit of rebounding after bad games.

The two-catch game last week was his second-lowest since 2016. He went without a reception once, on Dec. 18, 2016, vs. Colts. He followed with career-high 202 yards on 12 catches for two TDs vs. Packers.

Cousins, Thielen lead Vikings in dominant win over Giants EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — So much for the Minnesota Vikings being one dimensional. The passing game is back in synch with the run.

Add in the defense, and the reality is the Vikings have it all.

Kirk Cousins threw two touchdowns to Adam Thielen, Dalvin Cook ran for 132 yards and the Vikings made life miserable for Daniel Jones and the New York Giants in every way possible in a 28-10 victory Sunday.

“We played well from the jump,” said Cousins, who was 22 of 27 for a season-high 306 yards. “I thought it was a very balanced attack today through the pass game and the run game. The screen game added variety to the offense.

I thought Dalvin showed why he’s such a special player.”

The win came just a week after the Vikings (3-2) did little in a 16-6 loss to the Chicago Bears and Thielen insisted the team had to stop being one dimensional, relying solely on the run.

And that’s exactly what Minnesota did. It hit the Giants (2-3) with a bit of everything — pass, run and the defense — in ending the two-game winning streak
