“Beauty of Japan” explored at MNSU MARIA LY STAFF WRITER The Japanese Intercultural Association hosted its first Japan night in seven years showcasing their culture through performance, clothing, and food.

Mio Yoshizaki, the President of JIA, said, “We just decided to do this because a lot of people showed interest and maybe we have a different side that we can show about Japanese culture and maybe more in depth, not just pop culture but traditional culture as well.”

The theme of the event was the beauty of Japan as

the night was segmented into four different parts: spring, fall, summer, and winter.

MC’s Vang Vue and Sari Rimawi led the audience into an adventure through short little skits and transitions into the seasons and performances.

Before the event guests were able to try their hand at Japanese character writing as they were given the option to choose a word such as “heart” or “love” and write it in Congi – the Japanese alphabet.

Guests painted their words on paper and took them home as a gift.

State department raises awareness about shrinking workforce MARIA LY STAFF WRITER The Minnesota Department of Human Services hopes to create awareness and attract students in joining the shrinking workforce in human services through efforts such as information sessions held in Minnesota college campuses.

The MNDHS partnered with higher education facilities, local providers, and staff from local and state agencies specializing in developmental disabilities, autism, mental health disorders, etc. to hold information sessions for students interested in human services career.

At the information sessions students are given the chance to network, learn, and connect with many different people in human services and

ask questions to learn more about the different sectors and career paths in the field.

Students will have the chance to learn and make connections to different career and internship opportunities.

These information sessions are part of the MNDHS efforts in their workforce outreach. Many students are unaware of the benefits of the different opportunities in human services and the great need for providers in the field.

Stacy Twite, the MNDHS’s Assistant Commissioner for Community Supports, said, “We have a shortage of workers in human services and in some areas it’s difficult to provide services because of those workforce shortages, so we’ve been partnering with schools and universities, providers, and others, to increase awareness to students

about different opportunities in the human services field.”

The workforce shortage in human services could lead to issues down the road for families who may need these services.

Families could face long wait times or an inability to access certain programs that could assist in their wellbeing and stability in their communities. Some families may have to travel a great distance to access these services and supports for their children.

One of the challenges the human services workforce faces is their difficulty with staff retention. This could be affected by reimbursement rates, lack of training to meet the demands of the position, and competition from other employers.However, a workforce shortage could be a problem that many industries face.Twite says, “It’s such

a tight labor force market right now. We know there is a demand for workers across many different industries so I think we want to make sure there is information about human services jobs and the pathways that people choose, I think it’s part of the larger trend we’re seeing and the workforce overall and we hope to combat that with specific information about the opportunities out there.

Students can also learn more about loan forgiveness programs.The MNHDS is currently working with a professor in the Department of Psychology in hopes of hosting a meet and greet event at Minnesota

Meanwhile, the MNHDS hopes to continue spreading information about human service careers and recruit students with their next information session in Augsburg College in Minneapolis.

The talent does not end there, as students performed a variety of musical performances. Megumi Sakiyama and Yuri Jinno performed taiko – the playing of traditional Japanese drums.

Shinna Komazawa sang a popular anime song “Inochi No Namae” from the Studio Ghibli movie “Spirited Away” with English lyrics in the background as well as scenes from the movie playing as she sung.

A student three-man-band consisting of a guitarist, bassist, and lead singer covered songs from Japanese band “Oneokrock” with love songs like “Heartache” and “Wherever You Are.” A choir then performed the traditional graduation song in Japanese school gradua-

tion ceremonies, “Tabidachi No Hini” meaning “On the Day of Departure”.

The event ended with DJ Seigo as he mixed sounds of traditional Japanese instrumentals with modern pop songs and beats as performers hopped on stage for one last farewell dance.

Yoshizaki said, “I want the guests to leave knowing more about Japan and more interesting Japanese cultures, not just anime or manga, but also traditional cultures which had

very specific meaning and very specific history to it. For the students, I want them to experience sharing a culture, what it means to share a culture with people here and people who are coming from different places.”

The ballroom filled with the sounds of a plane landing as the MC’s brought the audience to Japan introducing us to the beautiful seasons with a sprinkling of fun facts about Japan such as its 1,500 yearly earthquakes.

The event was filled with dancing performances. Members from the Anime Club at MNSU performed a Wotagei dance to the anime song “Zenzenzense” performing in partial darkness with high energy and colorful glow sticks.

A large group of Japanese students also banded together in performing an idol dance, to the song “Heavy Rotation” – a song from popular Japanese idol group AKB48. Imitating real life, “fans” waved glow sticks in the air as they screamed with excitement for their idols.

Audience members were also given the chance to dance as Masaki Hara taught the group the Awaodori dance chanting “Yato san!” as the audience replied “Yato! Yato!”

Asaka Shimizu and Mio Yoshizaki performed a heartfelt singing and dancing number to “Mina Sora No Shita” about friendship and lifting each other up.

Japan night, along with its audience, was diverse in performances even having karate

demonstrations. Mark Larson and Antonella Emilsson from the Minnesota Aiki Shuren demonstrated hand to hand sword techniques as they flipped each other to the ground.

Members Naoto Takasu and Mark Willie also demonstrated different forms and applications of karate giving a brief history of the practice as it originated from China and India and introduced to the public in 1922.

Shinna Komazawa gave a cultural lesson to the audience as she talked about the different forms of entertainment in Japan such as the snow festivals and ice statue building contests, the fisherman dance competition among college students, and Yakushima island and its beautiful nature and hiking scene.

Dominick Drabent, a student at MNSU, loved the presentation as he said, “My favorite part of Japan night was the fun educational aspects like I learned a lot of different things that I didn’t know before, especially related to dances and cultural habits so that was the most interesting part.”

Even during dinner, guests were educated about Japanese cuisine as they were served Japanese curry and rice, inari sushi, miso soup, ice cream with soy bean powder, and pickled cucumbers.

Some states celebrate indigenous people instead of Columbus ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A handful of states are celebrating their first Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday as part of a trend to move away from a day honoring Christopher Columbus.

New Mexico, Vermont and Maine are among the latest to pass measures doing away with Columbus Day celebrations in deference to Native Americans. The federal Columbus Day holiday remains in place.

In all, around 10 states observe some version of Indigenous Peoples Day, along with more than 100 U.S. cities.

Washington, D.C., is celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day this year under a temporary measure.

Native American advocates for years have pressed states to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day over concerns that Columbus helped launched centuries of genocide against indigenous populations in the Americas.

New Mexico marked its first statewide Indigenous Peoples Day with an invocation by several tribal leaders in unison in their native languages. Other events at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque included a parade and traditional dances.

Kimberlaigh Begay, 29, a member of the Navajo Nation, said she was inspired to see so many Native American tribes get together for a day of unity.

“When I was in school, it was all about Columbus Day and he discovered us,” Begay said. “Really? Because that’s not what our elders told us.

We were already here.”

State offices in Maine also closed for the holiday. Maine, home to four federally recognized tribes, ditched Columbus Day in favor of Indigenous Peoples Day with an April bill signing by Democratic Gov. Janet Mills.

She said at the time she hoped the change would represent a move “toward healing, toward inclusiveness.” Tribes in Maine have had a rocky relationship with the state government over the years, and the Penobscot and Passamaquoddy tribes withdrew representatives to the Legislature in 2015, when Republican Gov. Paul LePage was in office.

In New Hampshire, a bill to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day was retained in committee this year and will be voted on in the early days of the next legislative session, which starts in January. At least two towns

in the state have already renamed the holiday.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper issued proclamations recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day. In Oklahoma, which is home to 39 tribes, Monday’s holiday is jointly marked as Oklahoma Native American Day and Columbus Day. Gov. Kevin Stitt, one of the first tribal members to be elected governor in the U.S., this year signed into law a measure that moved Native American Day from November to the second Monday in October California celebrates Native American Day in September. A group of Native American activists planned to board a dozen traditional canoes Monday to circumnavigate Alcatraz Island in an effort to reclaim the former federal prison as a symbol of indigenous rights.

Since 1990, South Dakota has marked the second Monday in October as Native Americans’ Day, an official state holiday, according to the Pew Research Center. In Hawaii it’s known as Discoverers’ Day, though it isn’t an official state holiday, the center said.

The change to Indigenous Peoples Day in a growing number of cities and states has prompted some backlash in conservative circles and among Italian Americans.

University of Maine College Republicans, for example, have described the move as part of a “radical left-wing agenda.”

But Native Americans in some states have welcomed the change and said it was time to pay homage to Native Americans instead of Columbus.

Democratic New Mexico state Rep. Derrick Lente of Sandia Pueblo, who sponsored that state’s legislation changing the holiday to Indigenous Peoples Day, said the day allows reflection on the United States’ complicated history. It’s also a chance to set the record straight about Columbus and the pain Native Americans suffered, Lente said.

On Monday, he played emcee to the state’s first Indigenous Peoples Day celebration at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, where dancers from Acoma Pueblo, the Navajo Nation, Mexico and Zuni Pueblo performed.

“We are still here. We are still resilient,” Lente said to a cheering crowd. “And we will be here forever.”

A cozy, fall retreat for MNSU students HELLEN AKINYI STAFF WRITER

Over the weekend, students who are part of Bridges and Cru, two on-campus organizations at Minnesota State University, Mankato attended their annual fall retreat at Lake Okoboji in Iowa.

Ana Tamez, a volunteer from Brazil working with Bridges, said, “Although this is my first fall retreat since I just moved here, I have learnt so much in the past two days and met so many people.”

She continued, “I came with very little expectation, but I’m surprised at how that was exceeded.”

There were over 80 students from three universities in Minnesota, which were, MNSU, Southwest Minnesota State University and Gustavus Adolphus. Most people carpooled to the destination and arrived by 7 p.m. The retreat had activities planned out from the moment everyone got settled in.

My favorite activity was blanket making which were able to do as our last activity

before we all bid our goodbyes. Others included karaoke which was hosted by Bridges students on the first night and a dance party was the last one Saturday night which the Cru students hosted.

Despite it snowing and temperatures being so low, some people actually jumped in the lake just for

the experience, while most of us watched in amusement with at least 3 sweaters on.

And for the few of us who witnessed snow for the first time, we made use of it and played with it.

Thanks to the Bridges students we got to have an international dinner night Saturday with various food and drinks from different coun-

tries, from Malaysian chicken curry to Brazilian beans which go by feijao were all served.

The retreat offered so much to basically every person who attended, from having so much fun and meeting so many cool people, to learning more about our spiritual journeys, and also how to make it through college.

I guess for me, the fall re-

treat will now be part of my college experience every year until I graduate.

Discussing mental health should not be a stigma

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Week last week, I wanted to touch on the important topic surrounding the stigma of mental health.

Mental health is often misunderstood and misinterpreted throughout all ages.

A common definition of mental health is the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional wellbeing of oneself—it is all about how we think, feel, and behave.

When people hear someone else talking about mental health, their immediate thought is that something must be wrong with them, they’re crazy, or that they are always depressed and sad.

All of these insinuations are incorrect.

There are people who struggle with depression, but saying all who struggle with mental illness have depression is ignorant. There are many different kinds of physical sicknesses, but as a society, we would not group together people diagnosed with asthma with people diagnosed with a broken rib.

In the same way, we should not group together every mental illness. Every mental illness is to be treated and cared for differently, and they are all just as important as the other.

Mental health has been seen as stigmatized since the beginning of time. While the treatment of mental health has gotten better over the years, it still not near where it needs to be.

One of the first real glimpses that I personally got into

about it for fear of being harassed, bullied, or being looked at differently.

They are concerned about being treated differently than they would be if people did not know they had a mental illness.

“Mental illness is a very complicated and hard thing to understand when you have never personally experienced it, or known someone who has experienced it. ” and was just often looked at as a person being insane. The characters were often beaten, taken advantage of, and treated as though they were children. Some characters in the story were in a mental institution, but not even mentally ill.

They were just characterized by their peers as not “fitting in” or “strange and weird”. Thankfully, we now do not have mental asylums, and more and more research are being done on mental health.

The effects that the stigma of mental health has had on people struggling from mental illness can be significant and long lasting.

Mental illness is a very complicated and hard thing to understand when you have never personally experienced it, or known someone who has experienced it.

This stigma also leads to many who are suffering from mental illness to feel uncomfortable and unsafe talking

Mental illness is very common among Americans, almost one in four having one.

All who are in this fight, know that you are not alone.

Going to a therapist when you are feeling overwhelmed and struggling should be as common as going to the doctor when you are sick.

Even if you have not had an experience with mental illness, be sure to educate yourself and others you may know to help reduce the stigma around it.

Respect and stand up for others when they are misunderstood about their illness, and help others to understand what they are going through. There are many resources available to you, and many who care for you.

Specific resources on campus are available to all including the Counseling Center and Medical Clinic in Health Services.

This novel was placed in the 1950s when mental health was not understood,

It has happened again, as hard as it is to believe, another African American has been shot and killed by police.

Their crime – simply being in their own home. It is a story that leaves us all questioning how it could happen again.

The fact that it happened the first-time last year was borderline insane and the resulting trial and sentence that followed left the country with a bad taste in our mouths.

But now it has happened again and this time it happened to a young aunt with her own young nephew in the house.

As a country we should be outraged, angry and frustrated. How and why is this happening again almost eerily similar and so close to each other is beyond me. For me, the how and the why this happened is taking a temporary backseat for an even bigger question – what is going to be done to make sure this doesn’t happen again?

Do we need more training for police? No matter how much editing they put into that video, I still see a police officer shooting first and asking questions later. I get it, police officers are under constant stress and constantly are put into environments where their lives are on the

MICHAEL MCSHANE NEWS EDITOR We were all kids once, and one of our favorite times during the year was that amazing night where we could dress up in whatever we wanted and got candy from strangers.

Okay, that last part is a bit creepy now, but the delicious piles of candy we were rewarded at the end of the night made up for it in spades. Yet at some point in mid- adolescent something switched and trick or treating became a “kiddy” thing and we left our childhood into the college students we are now.

We still dress up, sometimes a bit raunchier than back then, but those are for parties where you’re secluded to a house and the only time you’re outside is when you’re walking, sometimes not in a straight line, back home.

Halloween trick or treating shouldn’t have an age limit nor should people feel shame for wanting to do something that is fun to them. We’re adults, which means there are things we’re able to do without having to ask for permission and that should extend to something as fun and basic as trick or treating.

I remember when I went out trick or treating during Halloween, it was fun and exciting, and I would absolutely go out and trick or treat this

year if I wasn’t so busy all the time. And that is the thing, we’re college students, we’re busy all the time now. Even during summer and winter

that title of adult down for a second and let all that fun trapped inside out. Live like a kid again!

We’re old enough to know

That makes this day even more important – why take this away from yourself when it’s right there for the taking.

A night to unwind, to put

we’re never too old for something that makes us happy.

Trick or treating isn’t just something to entertain little kids, it’s a holiday where we can release that spark of imagination within us. We’ve always wanted to be some-

thing we’re not or can never be and we don’t stop that once we hit a certain age.

There are college students who want to be firefighters, private detectives and superheroes and they should be able to dress up as those kind of people during Halloween and go out and have fun.

That old saying; “Aren’t you a little old to go trick or treating” should be tossed into the trash can along with all the black liquorice.

To those thinking of going out on the 31st to trick or treat, don’t be ashamed and don’t think about what other people think. You’re not doing it for them, you’re doing it because it’s both fun and, this is important, because you want to.

Trump Rally

Donald Trump comes to Minneapolis Presidential visit brings large group of protestors amid supporters MICHAEL MCSHANE NEWS EDITOR The air was chilly Thursday morning, the ground wet and signs of an impending snow day closely approaching, but that didn’t stop many Minnesotans from going to downtown Minneapolis.

Minnesotans were hoping to see current President Donald Trump speak inside the Target Center to his supporters.

It was hours before the doors to the Target Center were set to even open and Trump supporters had already set up a large line spreading far throughout the skyway. Holding up flags, posters and sporting the iconic “Make America Great Again” hats, supporters of President Trump waited diligently for the rally to begin.

background, Trump walked on stage to massive cheers from the crowd.

“Thank you very much, thank you Minnesota, this is a great state,” Trump said in his opening statements following up by proclaiming he will turn Minnesota red “real soon”.

The president then went on to talk about the economy and how since the 2016 election the U.S. has picked up trillions of dollars in value for the economy and stated China has lost trillions. The U.S. and China are still in an ongoing trade war that has seen both sides face heavy tariffs.

“If our opponent had won that election, you know what would’ve happened – right now, China would become the number one economy anywhere in the world,” Trump said.

One of the main topics discussed throughout the night was Trump’s reelection campaign with many of the speakers proclaiming, “four more years”.

“I’m here for one reason and one reason only – that Minnesota and America need four more years of President Donald Trump in the White House,” Vice President Pence said.

As each speaker spoke about why Trump should be voted in for another term of

office, there was a very specific person they wanted voted out come next election.

“You got one heck of a mayor here,” Brad Parscale, the campaign manager for Trump’s reelection campaign, said to a chorus of boos. “You guys got to all show up and

Before the day of the rally, President Trump feuded on Twitter with current Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey over security costs for the rally. Trump threatened to sue and cancel the rally after the campaign was told the cost for security was to be around $560,000.

The security bill was later wavered, and the rally continued as scheduled.

“Minneapolis, you’ve got a rotten mayor, you’ve got to change your mayor,” Trump said.

A sea of people wearing red and white shirts filled the stands, imitating the Star-Spangled Banner albeit missing the blue. President Donald Trump moved closer to the microphone and continued, “This feels like the day before the election.”

Outside, a tribe of protestors filled the streets of Downtown Minneapolis, holding different signs and posters. Unlike the inside of the Target Center where one could visibly spot red in the high stands and in the hands of rally-goers, it was in piles of burnt hats and shirts outside, on the wet streets surrounding the arena.

Rain was forecast, and it certainly came down. Earlier in the day and later at

night, the streets of Downtown Minneapolis had accumulated many puddles, almost as if it was nature’s own symbolic metaphor for the land of 10,000 lakes. Meanwhile, inside the Target Center, President Trump rained insults on his many ‘opponents’, including the mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and other presidential hopeful.

Amid displaying his disappointment for Congresswoman Omar and calling out the “fake news” media, President Trump highlighted what mattered significantly to him: law and order.

“I came right here to Minnesota, and I pledged to address this really important issue, and it’s the issue of law enforcement,” said President Trump.

The emphasis continued as President Trump remarked about how he has “been good to law enforcement”, unlike Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, drawing more cheers from what seemed like an endless source of admiration from the crowd.

Calm before the storm: protests swarm Target Center MICHAEL MCSHANE NEWS EDITOR Minneapolis is in the midst of a civil war over President Donald Trump’s visit.

Supporters and protesters of Trump’s rally are already making themselves heard before the President even arrived in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Trump supporters filled up the line for the rally set to go off inside the Target Center, many showing their pride through t-shirts, hats and posters.

It didn’t take long though for protesters to enter the fray and make it known their dislike for the president and his policies.

Protesters have taken to the street, equalling in size to Trump supporters creating an almost sidewalk rivalry.

Protesters have brought with them their own special

way of signaling their furor over the president.

Protesters held up posters, one of which had President Trump in clown makeup, another urged to “close the camps”; referring to the detention centers for undoc-

umented immigrants have been sent to.

There were some Trump counter protesters whose posters did not minse words.

One Trump supporter sat proudly with a sign that promoted the hanging of who he

called “liberal traitors”.

Many protesters went up to the man and debated with him, but simply words were exchanged.

So far nothing violent has erupted due to the protesters and Trump supporters being

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — President Donald Trump was defiant in the face of an impeachment probe as he sought to convert the threat to his presidency into a weapon on the campaign trail, with biting and unsupported attacks on potential Democratic challenger Joe Biden.

Confronting an investigation provoked by his unprecedented calls for Ukraine and then China to assist in digging up dirt on his political rivals, Trump continued to lay into Biden and his son Hunter, whom he and his allies have accused, without evidence, of illegally profiting off his father’s office.

“The Bidens got rich, and

that is substantiated, while America got robbed,” Trump said. While the young Biden did have business interest overseas while he father was in office, there is no evidence of misconduct. Trump’s adult children have faced congressional scrutiny for their foreign business dealings while their father is serving as president, and Trump still maintains ownership stakes in his family’s businesses.

The rally in Minneapolis, the first since Democrats began proceedings two weeks ago to remove him from office, served as a proving ground for the president as he tries to use the impeachment inquiry to energize sup-

porters for his 2020 campaign by casting himself — and his supporters — as victims of Washington Democrats.

The performance revealed a defense strategy largely detached from the allegations Trump faces. Trump spent little time defending his attempt to pressure the Ukrainian president to investigate the Bidens. Instead, he cast the impeachment fight in simpler basic terms — a battle between him and the “swamp.”

“They want to erase your vote like it never existed,” Trump said. “They want to erase your voice, and they want to erase your future.”

He added, “The Dem-

ocrats’ brazen attempt to overthrow our government will produce a backlash at the ballot box the likes of which they have never ever seen before in the history of this country.”

Trump was by his own admission fired up and off script as he spoke for more than 90 minutes. Few of his political opponents were spared from insults. He said Biden “was only a good vice president because he knew how to kiss Barack Obama’s a**.”

He called Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar “a disgrace” and an “America-hating socialist.”

He said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was “really stupid.”

Both Linda and Rheta stood on the corner of the street, handing out balloons depicting “baby trump” to fellow protesters and people passing by. The duo found the balloons online after seeing the caricature being used during the London protests and brought them to the event to give away.

While protesters assembled on that corner, counter-protesters made themselves be heard on the other side of the street, some waving flags of the Trump Campaign logo exclaiming that today was “Trump Day”.

One Trump supporter spoke about how he gravitated towards Trump because of Trump’s promise of end-

ing the U.S.’s position as the “piggybank of the world”.

The supporter went on to state how he feels liberals could be more educated on the facts.

“As far as his tweeting and stuff like that, that’s just him, it’s unfortunate that it inflames people, but it inflames people that aren’t educated,” the Trump supporter said.

Other Trump supporters gathered around and voiced support in the investigation into the Bidens.

Both the protesters and counter-protesters primarily stayed on their own side of the street with a rare few going to the other side to confront and debate the other side.

in such a condensed area.

Minneapolis police have made their presence known as police cars and police checkpoints have scattered themselves throughout the major areas around the Target Center.

Trump is set to speak at 7 p.m. and will have much to say about the ongoing impeachment inquiry that has taken ahold of his administration.

Unsurprisingly, the opinions over the inquiry has been partisan with many Trump supporters declaring it a plot to oust the president while protesters saying something like this needed to happen a long time ago.

Trump may also turn his attention to current Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey who recently had a spat with the president over a $560,000 bill over security.

Another political rival Trump took time to talk about in his speech was U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, calling her a disgrace and one of the reasons why he could win reelection in 2020.

Trump went further and stated a conspiracy theory that Omar’s very name is fraudulent and that her legal husband was her own brother whome she “married” to make it easier for him to immigrate to America.

Below the Target Center skywalk there was a completely different type of crowd slowly but surely pick-

ing up in attendance – protesters. Relegated primarily on the corner of N. First Ave and N. Sixth Ave, the protesters armed themselves with their own signs. They gathered outside the event center chanting their displeasure of the president’s arrival to the Twin Cities.

Two of the protesters Linda, a resident of Duluth and Rheta, a resident of St. Paul spoke of their disapproval of Trump’s handling of the presidency and used today, in their words, as their way of protesting everything Trump stands for.

“I believe that we are in the midst of a constitutional crisis with Trump being president,” Linda said.

I echo the millions who have said already but actions need to be taken and they need to be taken by someone who can make some actual change. In this case it would be the Texas Department of Public Safety and whether they make some changes depends on if they are as tired as the rest of the country in seeing these same horrific accidents happening at a scary pace.

This wasn’t even supposed to be a situation where guns needed to be drawn out. A neighbor simply asked for police to check on the resident since the door was slightly open and the lights were on, no mention of breaking in or armed robbery at all.

As someone who aspires to be a journalist, this is one news story I never want to see ever repeat and must cover.

Director of Mankato’s 410 Project bikes 3,200 miles After five years, Dana Sikkala finally completes her journey around MN RACHAEL JAEGER STAFF WRITER Dana Sikkala has bike trekked around Minnesota, and visited artists living in Grand Marais, Knife River, Duluth, Sturgeon Lake, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Red Wing, and St. Peter. After five years and traveling 3,200 miles in the summer with a trailer and film crew, she has decided that it’s time to call it quits.

With her Surly bike and riding partner Kyle Zeiszler, they demonstrated and advocated for what it means to live off your bike in Minnesota. At the same time, she followed through Project Bike’s mission to showcase that artists are truly part of their chemistry as individuals, as communities and as a state.

When Sikkala took over the 410 Project in 2012, she asked herself what she could do to advocate for artists,

not just in Mankato but also throughout the state.

“After thinking for over a year or so, I came up with putting together my two pas-

sions, art making and biking and created Project Bike,” Sikkala stated. “Then in 2015 I set out on my first Project Bike.”

Since then, the 410 Project has been glued together with Project Bike. Project Bike started out of the 410 Project, but expanded into its own

unique entity.

“But everyone always talks about Project Bike and the 410 together,” Sikkala clarified. “It’s always stayed true to its roots.”

On Oct. 11, the 410 Project hosted an opening reception for Project Bike, which showcased the artwork Sikkala collected on her tour. Following the reception, the 410 Project premiered a mini version of the documentary that Alex Kohnstamm and Alec Schwandt created during her tour. The filmmakers also recorded the reception to add to their final footage of the film, which will release in 2020.

“When Dana met us for the first time, she told us that the

“Arsenic and Old Lace” makes an enterance at MSU ed. “But that’s the beauty of theatre. You get to be a different person than who you are in real life and it’s such a phenomenal experience.”

Grace O. Ricard, a junior at MSU, is casted as Abby’s sister Martha, and she emerges on stage for the second time at the University. Last fall she performed in “The Music Man” which she declared “was an absolute blast.”

She added that it has been really exciting playing with Martha and exploring how she fits into the puzzle that is the show, as well as playing a character much older.

She said that she prepared for her role by being open to new discoveries and being vulnerable in rehearsal space.

She thanks Heather Hamilton, the director, for “a safe place to try new things.” Ricard further expresses, “I failed, a lot.

But through trial and error, and with the support from this

Continued from page 11 project would be ending,” Kohnstamm said. “It was really surprising that we were brought on at the end of the project, but we were also very flattered and honored that she trusted us with her last ride.”

Their routine started when Sikkala and Zeiszler started biking and ended after the bikers reached their destination for the night. As far as the style of the documentary, Schwandt framed his stylistic decisions in response to previous years. He observed how he those scenes from the previous were shot and how they were structured and put

together.

“I wanted this year to have a completely different feel and a renewed focus on the ‘why’ of the artists, and not so much the ‘what’,” Schwandt said. “This meant having sit down interviews be the primary interview technique we used, and having them look directly into camera, rather than having their eyeline be off camera to the interviewer.

I thought it would give more of a connection to the audience. I was really interested in having each of the artists feel distinct, and really see what makes each of them unique.”

“Dana and Kyle were very

good about sharing their schedule and the biking route that they would be going on,” Kohnstamm commented. “It made it very easy for us to track their movement and go through production the best we could.”

“Our nights were late, usually with Alex monitoring the transfer of footage in our hotel rooms - which was one of the biggest logistical challenges,” Schwandt added. “Alex and I have been shooting together since around 2013, so we have a pretty good way of working together. It’s great to have two heads to focus on the different aspects of pro-

duction, Alex on the logistics and day to day allows me to focus on capturing the moments with Dana, Kyle and our artists.”

Kohnstamm, as a producer handled all the logistics, hiring, transport, lodging, and supervising post to ensure that Project Bike orchestrates together properly, scheduled, and came in on budget.

“What intrigued me most was that it was the final year,” Schwandt said, “and that sense of closure I thought would be a lot more emotional, and a lot more poignant and interesting. It gave a good finality to the film.”

“I’m very honored to have the privilege of producing the last Project Bike documentary,” Kohnstamm added. “I’m excited for it to be finished in 2020 and sent to film festivals and seeing what the national response to this documentary is.”

“The Joker” is haunting, beuguiling, unforgettable ALYSSA BUNDE STAFF WRITER If you feel like being depressed and uncomfortable for two straight hours “The Joker” is for you. If not, like me you’ll leave the theater feeling mentally distraught.

To begin, I would like it to be known that before attending this movie I didn’t watch any trailers or previews.

My friends had simply asked if I wanted to tag along and I obliviously said yes. I assumed it would be a typical superhero movie, filled with action, nobility and optimism.

I obviously was dead wrong.

Right away we were dropped into the hellfire of Arthur Fleck’s (The Joker) mental state and the atrocity of Gothom.

The Joker was beaten, ha-

rassed and looked absolutely distraught. Joaquin Phoenix had to lose 52 pounds for this role and he was a skeleton caked in horrendous clown makeup. Which brings me to my first reason for how the movie unsettled me: clowns.

I understand the Joker has always worn clown-ish face paint but he had never seemed clown-like to me.

Ever since the first “IT” remake came out I’ve had an extreme distaste and general fear of clowns.

The Joker wasn’t a demonic clown that munched on children, but he still managed to make me feel equally disturbed.

The Joker’s uncontrollable laugh was one that will now haunt me. It was one of the film’s first signs of darkness.

Throughout every disturbing scene, his laugh was never far behind. Even after murdering another character and

sitting in his victim’s blood The Joker laughs, and I cried.

I believe the discomfort I experienced from this film was from its rawness and unfiltered reality.

I have my dark days, but they’re minuscule compared to the torment and decay of the Joker’s mind. The film was surreal because I had a cold realization that this, to a certain degree, could actually be someone’s inner world.

Despite my discomfort, the acting was extremely impressive. Joaquin Phoenix portrayed the mental disarray of Joker impeccably and without fault. He transformed into a character that I couldn’t forget and made me feel as if I was going through the slow progression of insanity with him.

I wanted to know if others had experienced similar emotions after viewing the film so I tracked down fellow students

Hamilton expresses her pride in her talented actresses, calling both Grace and Ray brilliant and that she worked with them on creating characters that seem absolutely harmless, despite the fact that they’re killers. Farce in “Arsenic and Old Lace” has challenged her, but she appreciates the insights that her team of performers provide her with. “We worked hard on getting the timing right, the specificity of movement nice and sharp, and the en-

ergy builds appropriate,” she wrote in an email.

Ricard says that many MSU shows like to leave the audience with something important to think about, or a certain feeling that will stick with them. “This show is just a fun night of door slams and dead bodies,” she said, “all while two old ladies can’t seem to figure out why killing lonely old men is wrong!”

“I hope that all audiences can take away a fun experience and see an interesting story about such a kooky family,” Kloth added.

When asked how to de-

scribe her experience in the performance, Hamilton responded, “I giggled my head off.”

She stated, “Joker is haunting, beguiling, unforgettable.

One doesn’t know whether to fear and hate, or empathize with and love its protagonist.

It’s lush with ambiguity and jarring detail -- it’s a movie I could watch over and over.”

MNSU student Khaled Alhadiah stated, “I think it has a great story. It is thrilling and sad. But the most important thing is you will never expect what is going to happen.”

MNSU student Mireille Ghassan also shared her

thoughts on the film, stating that “the movie had good acting but it still felt off.”

According to Thrillist, filmmaker Todd Phillips offered a little explanation of his intentions with the film at a Venice press conference.

Phillips stated at this conference, “you hate to define it for people, what it is, and it’s certainly not a political film, I mean for some people.” He continued, “it just really depends on the lens on which you view it through.”

Personally, I never want to look through that same lens and experience this mental confusion again.

Football defeats Northern State, improves to 6-0 The undefeated team now prepares for a home game against U-Mary ANDREW NEURURER SPORTS EDITOR The Minnesota State football team traveled to South Dakota, to take on Northern State in cold, snowy temperatures.

The game-time temperature was as low of 33 degrees, but the Mavericks continued to stay hot, improving to 6-0 after winning 39-7.

The Mavericks used three quarterbacks against the Wolves, but sophomore Brevin Kaiser didn’t see time until the fourth quarter.

Junior JD Ekowa stole the show, completing 50% of his 14 passes for 161 yards and one touchdown. Whereas senior Ryan Schlichte found continued success throwing the ball, leading the Mavericks in passing touchdowns with two. He also added an interception in his 54 passing yards.

MSU had five other players on the team catch at least one or two passes in the win

as well.

Running wise, senior Nate Gunn didn’t eclipse 100 yards

on the ground for the first time this season. However, he netted two touchdowns on 76 rushing yards – adding yet another productive game.

Redshirt freshman Kaleb Sleezer led the team in rushing yards with 85 on 14 attempts. He didn’t reach the endzone but averaged 6.1 yards per carry.

Senior Spencer Hermus added the lone interception of the game. He also added two solo tackles to his resume on the game.

The Mavericks collected two sacks, coming from junior Josh Kawlewski and senior Destyn Woody.

MSU saw new faces at the top of the tackle leaders in the game. Junior Brayden Thomas gained five tackles – two for a loss, and redshirt freshman Nick Foss and junior Cade Johnson followed suit with four tackles.

Minnesota State will now take on the University of Mary Saturday at home.

Men’s hockey handles Arizona State with ease AARON YOUNG STAFF WRITER The Minnesota State men’s hockey team handled Arizona State with ease on backto-back nights, winning 4-1 in the first game and 5-0 in the second.

Junior Riese Zmolek started the Mavericks season off with a goal and gave the team an early 1-0 lead. Later in the first period, Arizona State’s Johnny Walker tied the game up.

Sophomore Julian Napravnik broke the tie in second on a powerplay goal.

He was assisted by juniors Reggie Lutz and Connor Mackey Senior Marc Michaelis scored the final two goals of the contest in the first game – a powerplay and shorthanded goal, pushing the Mavericks lead to 4-1.

Senior Ian Schied and freshman Lucas Sowder both had two assists each on the contest.

Sophomore Dryden McCay saved 25 shots, giving up just one goal.

On Saturday, it wasn’t until

the second period that the action picked up. A lone goal by junior Dallas Gerads highlighted the first period.

In the second, tempers flared when a Maverick player got the wind knocked out him and both teams fought until an Arizona State player was rejected.

Minnesota State responded with a bombshell in the third, lighting up the scoreboard with four goals on three power plays. The goal scorers were Michaelis, Lutz, Sowder and freshman Ryan Sandelin. The Mavericks improve to 2-0 on the year.

The men’s team takes on North Dakota on Friday and Saturday.

It was an instant classic for the women’s team on Saturday. Their first meeting against the Bulldogs couldn’t be contained in regulation and both teams had to fight for the right to win in overtime. The Mavericks gave it all they had, but UMD managed to squeak by, winning 3-2.

Women’s soccer completes another shutout ANDREW NEURURER SPORTS EDITOR

MSU women’s soccer improved to 9-2 on the season after shutting down Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls this past weekend.

On Oct. 11, MSU took on the Mustangs of SMSU and defeated them 5-1.

Sophomore Jenny Vetter stole the show in the first game and added the first two goals of the game. She continues to show out this season, playing a large role in the Mavericks game. Vetter was assisted by senior Anna Mixon on her first goal.

Freshman Allie Williams was assisted by redshirt sophomore Brooke Valiukas for the third goal of the game.

A few minutes later, freshman Abby Begin scored the fourth goal of the game, assisted from Williams. Williams would finish the day with two assists, later assisting on sophomore Sydney Deprenger’s goal, which pushed the final score to 5-1.

Goalie Alexa Rabune continued her dominance this season, allowing just one goal and saving four shots.

weekend was a shutout, thanks to the help of Rabune and freshman Mackenzie Rath. These two helped save three shots from the Cougars, helping the Mavericks to a 5-0 win – the team’s sixth shutout

of the season.

Offensively, Vetter once again added to her season total, collecting another twogoal game of the weekend.

She’s upped her total to nine goals on the season. Along

with her two goals against USF, Vetter added three assists, playing a part in all five goals in the game.

The other three goals were scored from Williams, sophomores Nadia Lowery and

Brynn Desens.

The Mavericks will be looking to push their total to 11 wins this weekend against Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State at home.

Mavericks volleyball upsets No. 9 SMSU and No. 24 USF JENNA PETERSON STAFF WRITER This past weekend, Minnesota State Mavericks volleyball team took on Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State at the Taylor Center.

The team created new plays, both offensively and defensively in order to have the outcome they did, which was a win on both nights.

The Mavericks played against the Cougars Friday night and in the beginning, both teams were keeping the score even. That was until MSU was able to create an 8-1 run. The Cougars attempted to regain the lead, but the Mavericks were fighting hard and took the set 25-20.

The second set started off similar to the first, with neither team having a huge lead.

In the middle of the set, the Mavericks were able to gain a 5-0 run and win the set 25-20.

The third and final set between the Mavericks and Cougars, resulted in MSU gaining a quick 8-3 lead. The Cougars were able to bring the heat and take a 5-1 run to get back in the set. shot, bringing excitement to the Taylor Center and leading to a Maverick win 25-23.

Senior Morgan Olson led all attackers with 13 kills and having a block, while Shimon finished the game with two blocks and eight kills.

The Mavericks ended the game with nine blocks compared to the Cougars, who had zero.

On Saturday, the Mavericks took on Southwest Minnesota

State and looking at the two team’s history, it seemed as if SMSU would take the game.

That wasn’t the case, as the Mavericks continued their hard work from Friday’s game.

Early on, the Mavericks built a 10-6 lead, due to the strength of the front line - anchored by senior Anissa Janzig. The Mustangs lost its balance and the Mavericks took the first set 25-16.

The second set started off a

bit slower than the first, with a back and forth of two-tothree points for each team.

Later in the set, the Mavericks began to put some plays into action, with strong kills from Olson and Jessica Nelson, to win the set 25-22.

The Mustangs wanted to prove they came to play in the third set, with a 5-0 run to slow down the Mavericks.

Even though the Mustangs were in the lead, Mankato’s

middle defense helped the team rally back with a 13-5 run, thanks to the help of Janzig’s blocks.

After some trading of points, the Mavericks took the lead 23-17 and although the Mustangs tried to make a comeback, the Mavericks

Swim and dive takes down SMSU over the weekend MEL STRAMM STAFF WRITER The Minnesota State Mavericks women’s swimming and diving team bested Southwest Minnesota State University Oct. 11.

The Mavericks won their second consecutive meet of the season against the still fairly young team of SMSU. The Mavericks were able to take most of the events (15 out of 16) once again, including both relay events with a final score of 192-74.

The 200-meter medley relay was taken by junior Meredith Cox, freshmen Darah Coleman and Nicole Beckman, and sophomore Anja Enervold, with a time of 1:51.41.

Enervold was able to add three individual events to this win, including the 50-backstroke with 27.58, the 50-meter freestyle posting 25.23, as well as the 500-meter freestyle, finishing with 5:19.30.

Beckman also took the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 59.09.

The team of seniors Megan Schill, Maggie Knier, and sophomores Nikki Ault and Emily Goodman won the 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 1:43.86 Goodman also took first place in the 50-meter breaststroke, posting 31.22.

Emelia Selky won the 200 and 100-meter freestyle for the Mavericks, with times of 1:55.03 and 55.24.

Kayla Rinderknecht posted times of 26.68 in the 50-meter butterfly and 1:01.64 in the 100 IM. Sophomore Katie Streiss won the 100-meter breast-

stroke, posting 1:09.32.

Cox took the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:02.64.

In the diving category, senior Jaycie Klein was able to take the 1-meter event, with a score of 211.25, as well as the 3-meter event with a score of 199.70.

Sophomore Dana Schindler set up the offense for the Mavericks and ended with 35

Over halfway through, the Bulldogs tied the game at 2, when Gabbie Hughes beat the goaltender after an assist from Brodt. Neither team would gain the upper hand for the remainder of the game, sending it into overtime.

Maverick fans were sent packing after the Bulldogs made quick work in OT, scoring less than 30 seconds in from Brodt.

Akervik led the Mavericks

in assists with two. For the Bulldogs, four players recorded an assist and Ashton Bell had two on the night.

Despite being outshot 44to-16, the Mavericks stuck around the put up a fight.

In the series finale, the Bulldogs ran rampant over the Mavericks, winning 4-1.

UMD scored all four of their goals, before the Mavericks found the net late in the third. Anna Klein began the Bulldog domination with her first goal of the year halfway through the first period.

Hughes and Bell followed up in the second, three minutes apart from each

other. Monique Aanenson put UMD up 4-0 in the third period.

Sophomore Madison Oelkers was the only Maverick to score, scoring with less than five minutes into the third period.

UMD had six power plays on the game compared to Mavericks who only had two on the night. The Bulldogs also outshot the Mavericks 38-to-11.

The Maverick’s women team will take on Ohio State Friday and Saturday at home, at the Mankato Civic Center for their next homestand.

“We had a fun meet vs.

Southwest Minnesota State,” head coach Nate Owens said. “The meet format was shorter than most with the majority of events being sprints. Many of our swimmers were able to enjoy competing in races that they rarely have the chance to do.”

Owens explained further,

“It was also good to see our divers progressing from week to week and continuing to improve especially on the 3-meter board. Overall, our season is off to a strong start, so it’s about building off that moving forward.”

On Friday, the Mavericks will open their season on the road against Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
