The CSU gets spooky for Halloween

INSIDE

Come Oct. 28 for a thrilling haunted house...if you dare.

NEWS:

Fifteen entirely serious predictions for the future.

JAMIE KANKAALA Staff Writer The fall season is finally upon us, and that means Halloween is right around the corner. For most of us, Halloween means scary movies, dressing up, candy, and best of all, haunted houses. Haunted houses are becoming more popular as people travel great distances to find the best ones. Luckily for us, students do not have to travel far since the Minnesota State University, Mankato Student Events Team is partnering up with campus Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs) to host the 5th annual Centennial Student Union Haunted Takeover. On Oct. 28 from 9 p.m. to midnight, the CSU will be transformed into an exciting and scary haunted house consisting of the CSU’s main and lower levels and 18 rooms of terror. Students will enter this haunted house through the CSU door located across from the campus fountain.

Team and RSOs to show a version of a worst nightmare. Haunted rooms in the past have had themes range from exorcisms to a creepy dollhouse and much more. Once students are in the haunted house make sure to look around for Stomper! Each theme of the rooms you are taken through in the CSU tie to the question, “Where is Stomper?” After the walk through the haunted house, students can take a quick survey to say which haunted room was the best. The team that designed the winning room will receive a $200 prize.

34th Women & Spirituality Conference returns to MSU Students explore different religions in a respectful atmosphere.

mnsu.edu

YUSEONG JEON Staff Writer The 34th Women and Spirituality Conference will take place Saturday, Oct. 24 and Sunday, Oct. 25, at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The prestigious event that MSU hosts annually for students, faculty, and staff along with the general public provides presentations on a wide range of approaches to spirituality. The Women and Spirituality Conference, started in 1981 at MSU, aims to provide a supportive and nurturing setting for a dialogue of caring and mutual respect

among people from many spiritual and religious traditions. The conference does not advocate or exclude any view and continues to foster an understanding and celebration of similarities and differences. “The conference has been occurring at Mankato for 34 years,” said Amy Anderson, coordinator of the conference as well as a professor in the Gender and Women’s Studies department. “We have developed this amazing environment and community to come experience, practice

and learn new spiritual techniques and spiritual beliefs and ways to get in touch with spirituality. “It just provides a level and a space for spirituality that is not prevalent in a lot of different areas and it just provides people of all genders a basic common practice or new techniques and new forms,” she continued. What is especially noteworthy is that the famous bestselling Latina Writer Juana Bordas will be the keynote speaker on the first day of the two-day event, on Saturday,

What’s your major? I’m getting my masters in Gender and Women’s Studies. What year is it for you? This is my first year of graduate school.

Oct. 24. Juana Bordas, a nationally recognized Latina leader and bestselling author, is famous for her book “Salsa, Soul and Spirit – Leadership for a Multicultural Age,” which won the 2008 International Latina Book Award for leadership and is used in more than 50 universities. Furthermore, she is a founder of Denver’s Mi Casa Recourse Center and the founding President of the National Hispana Leadership Institute. She was the first Latina faculty at the Center for Creative Leadership and she also served as vice president of the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership and trustee of the International Leadership Association. According to Anderson, a lot of the attendees of the conference are 30 or older, “so we would really like to get involved with individuals who are under the age of 30 to come to the conference and experience new things.” This year, hundreds of participants are expected to attend the conference. There

will be around 70 presenters and about 80 vendors that are over the Schellberg Gymnasium Facilities at MSU. The conference is open to the public with a registration fee of $65, but for MSU students it is only $15. The Women and Spirituality Conference is co-sponsored by the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences, Gender and Women’s Studies Department, Institutional Diversity and Women’s Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Gender & Women’s Studies Department at Minnesota State University, Mankato contributes to feminist and social concerns through undergraduate and graduate degree programs and courses. For more information about the registration for the conference, please go to the website at mnsu.edu/women or contact the Gender and Women’s Studies Department at 507-389-2077.

Cultural Contribution Scholarship at MNSU Only 25 hours of volunteering can ease the burden of tuition expenses.

IRODA KARIMOVA Staff Writer The past two days were busy here at Minnesota State University, Mankato with a number of “business people” around campus. I was wondering what was happening. It turns out these people were our students, future “business” people, who showed in business attire to meet their possible “future” employers. Well, the Career and Internship Expo was organized for two days on campus. The days were full of meetings, impressions, and experiences for students who talked with representatives of companies who were positively motivated to find the future talented people from our campus. Business attire, a sharp look, and convincing speech were important for every participant of this event. Well, as other students, I also tried to be involved and gain experiences. The American system of communication and business attitude is worth learning. Though it is first time for most international students, it surely encourages their future efforts on getting internships. Familiar companies with unfamiliar smile faces make you to feel very welcomed. I met many international students, and it made me proud to see them there. Everything at the event was organized well, from the checking-in station to the navigation company representatives. Last time I interviewed my international fellow campus mates, I asked them the reason of their choice for coming to MSU. But my question this time was in another direction, as I wanted to use the opportunity to have a conversation with many international students about something many do not know about: the Cultural Contribution Scholarship. A number of students weighed in regarding this question: Do you like your 25 hours you have to complete for your Cultural Contribu-

mnsu.edu

tion Scholarship? Paulo Sierra, an international student from Colombia, did volunteering in Americas Night and had a “cooking demonstration” station on that night to show how to cook one of America’s cuisines. “I really liked that the Cultural Contribution Scholarship gives students the opportunity to pay less of a tuition fee. Well 25 hours is not bad, and you can, however, complete it until the end of the semester. It makes you active in your social life as well. I did volunteering for Americas Night, and was so happy to have people around me involved in it. Jessika Gagakuma, studies psychology at MNSU, and is an international student from Ghana. “I like the Cultural Contribution hours, and at the same time I don’t like it (smiling). I like it because it was a fun way to give back and to be active to the community. I hate it because it makes you pile this worry on top of other worries, while you are trying to sort yourself in university, especially in your junior and senior year. Mohammad Sajal, studies management and is from Bangladesh: “I like it of course! Why not? It makes your tuition fee less to pay, and it enables us to experience a variety of work as well as a variation of culture. In simple words, it is fun to work, you get to know many people, learn many cultures…and not to mention maintain my scholarship status!” Parisa Rajbhandari, active almost in every event, is a

19-year-old from Nepal: “Well, it is actually nice question. My 25 Cultural Contribution hours is some extra work, but I do like it. It gives you an excuse to do something beyond your academics, which I think is very important. If anything, volunteering or contributing in outside events will widen your knowledge, which will actually help you succeed in your academics.” Satoko Hanaki from Japan studies communications. “I did not like it because

FRIDAY

the 25 hours that we need to earn sounded like a lot, but I then I liked it for now because it is great chance to meet a lot of new people outside of class and your own culture. Also they are mostly international students like me, so sometimes I meet people who are from countries that I have never heard. It is the great way to expand my view to grow as an international person.” Salma Abdelhamid an international student from

Egypt, studies finance. She was just excited to share her opinion, too. “I just love it. Cultural contribution hours! They pay for almost half of my tuition every semester. How can I not love something like this? The cultural contribution scholarship allows students to be part of many things going on and off campus and it is also the reason 90% of the international students attend MSU.” Pays almost half of tuition fee? Did I hear it right? Well to check this info through the following link: https://www. m n s u .e d u / i n t e r n a t i o n a l / scholarship/instate.html As it says:” …all new undergraduate applicants are automatically awarded the Cultural Contribution scholarship…” One of the requirements of this scholarship is to complete 25 hours being active in off or on campus events each semester. I don’t know about you, but I feel more motivated. It is almost the middle of semester and there are about 2 months before the end of this semester. So be active in the university and complete your 25 hours for your Cultural Contribution scholarship!

WES HUNTINGTON Staff Writer Being a tour guide at any venue is no easy challenge. You have to remember where everything is, and then you have to think on the fly what each area of the place does. For a large campus such as Minnesota State University, Mankato, this isn’t necessarily the case. You have to showcase mostly every academic building (without the Jane Earley Center for Performing Arts, but mentioning it anyway, and include talking

I also have to be somewhat honest about the food services here on campus and in one aspect the food as well. I usually say, “The food is somewhat decent, but it’s not great either.” I usually say that instead of what is usually on my mind when I bring the group around to the Carkoski Commons. In my mind, I am usually thinking, “This food is terrible. You’re going to hate it.” I may think it, but at least I don’t speak it out loud.

As a tour guide, we have to be extra nice about what we say about certain aspects of this great university. Generally the rule of thumb is that we have to let the students and parents decide if this is the best university for them. That’s why we usually don’t try and compare it to a different university. I know on certain occasions during this past week

Mount Kato’s annual Fall Fest Swap old equipment this Friday and Saturday.

COLE SCHMIDT News Editor

NI-

As everybody can tell from the chill in the fall air, the vibrant colors in the leaves, and pumpkin spice everything, fall is officially here. With fall comes the certainty that winter is soon approaching. As Minnesotans, we certainly know how (or at least try) to make the cold dark months as fun as possible. While some use this time enjoy indoor activities, others brave the elements and still find a way to enjoy activities outside. Mount Kato is one of those places where adventurers can spend some time in the winter. Luckily for skiers and snowboarders alike, Mount Kato is having its annual Fall Fest Oct. 23 and Oct 24 at the Mount. Kato ski area. Fall Fest is one of the area’s largest equipment swap and sale, selling skis, poles, boots, snowboards, helmets, and clothing. At the event, skiers and snowboarders are welcomed to sell their current equipment in order to upgrade to newer gear at a

discounted price. John Nelson of Mount. Kato lets us know that the event is about more than getting new and improved gear: “We are looking to have an event which will highlight the great scenery we have at Mount Kato, as well as get people excited for the upcoming ski and snowboard season,” Nelson says. While in the area, sellers and buyers can partake in a variety of activities, including hay rides, a bounce house, a candy hunt, pumpkin decorating, pumpkin launch, outdoor grilling, and beer samples. “It should be fun for the whole family!” Nelson says. Friday, Oct. 23, will host the first round of sales from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, will host a majority of the events from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the beer samples and outdoor grilling from 1

p.m. to 3 p.m. Mount Kato has been in business for 38 years here in Mankato. This family-owned company gives a fun experience for the entire family. It was even named one of Southern Minnesota’s premier winter destinations. It offers 60 skiable acres and 19 trails, along with eight chair lifts, two conveyor lifts, and four terrain parks. Mount. Kato is located on 20461 Hwy 66. For any questions, contact Collin Matheson or Nemer Fieger at cmatheson@nemerfieger.com or by telephone at 763-242-4249. TOUR

Continued from page 4 when I gave three tours (two in the morning on Thursday and Saturday, one in the afternoon on Friday thanks to my previous commitment with KMSU-FM, which was okay), I have had to restrain myself from talking about Southwest Minnesota State University, because my first bachelor’s degree is in creative writing and literature from that university. It is so hard not to say something about it, but like the admissions bosses say “don’t compare MSU to another school. Let them decide.” I’m not complaining, but it sure is hard. I do appreciate the fact that people do indeed ask me questions, and actually get to know me as well.

It gives a humanizing effect to the tour. I remember some of the students asking me if I was involved in any sports. I am not athletic by any stretch of the imagination, so I usually tell them that I am not. I do tell them that I enjoy watching football and baseball, so it is a win-win situation for me. I’m glad that I’m able to give back to the MSU campus community with giving tours. I know for a fact that they still need people for Saturday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Nov. 14. If you would like to know more, contact the admissions office. It’s a fun way to give back to the community, and you’ll have a lot more fun than you’ll realize.

Fifteen entirely serious predictions for the future

LUKE LARSON Staff Writer Released in 1989, Back to the Future II made some predictions about what life might be like twenty-six years in the future. October 21, 2015 (a.k.a. yesterday), the date to which Marty McFly traveled, has come and gone. In the spirit of Back to the Future, I have decided to do my best to come up with fifteen modest predictions for what the world will be like twenty-six years from now on October 21st, 2041. 1. The world will speak a single language. In the year 2041, the entire world will speak one language. This language will not be English, however, despite its current trend of globalization. Nor will it be Mandarin,

2025, the esteemed inventor Dr. Luke Larson will have invented the first personal teleportation machine, revolutionizing the way we interact as humans. By 2041, however, you will not have to go through the laborious task of instantly teleporting yourself to any location on the planet as you will have the ability to teleport any location on the planet to yourself. Have you ever wanted to see Paris? Don’t teleport to Paris, teleport Paris to your living room. Have you dreamed of seeing the pyramids? Teleport them to your backyard. We will have finally achieved the task of making ourselves the center of the world. 3. Cash will have become completely replaced by credit cards If you want to buy something in the future, you won’t be able to use cash. Credit cards will have completely replaced cash as a means of payment. By 2041, however, credit cards will have evolved into something much different than the credit cards of today. Each person will have many cards, each with a set

“It may sound inconceivable now, but one day when you tell your grandchildren of the good old days when you spent hours scrolling through social media on the Internet, they may ask you ‘what’s an Internet?’”

as might have been your second guess. In 2041, the entire world will be speaking Slovak, a Slavic language spoken in Slovakia. Within the next twenty-nine years, Slovakia will rise from humble, relatively small central European nation to global empire, making knowledge of the Slovak language imperative. I would recommend getting ahead of the game by brushing up on your Slovak right now. A Slovak-English dictionary could certainly be a handy tool. 2. Advancements in technology will have rendered teleportation a thing of the past. With the ever-increasing speed and efficiency of transportation technology, it’s only a matter of time before teleportation will be made possible. Around the year

monetary value. Due to plastic shortages, these cards will be made of various metals such as copper and nickel. Cards of a value of one dollar or higher will be made of paper. Rather than displaying credit card company logos, these futuristic credit cards will bear the images of important political figures and national landmarks. Unlike the credit cards of today, credit cards of the future will not be assigned to individuals. You will be able to transfer them with other people, enter them into vending machines, and give them to the cashier at the store to purchase goods. 4. Something much more awesome than the internet will arise. You know how your grandparents tell you about how

all the movies were in black and white and how they used to have a rotary dial on their phone? How quaint and old-fashioned those things sound now in the Internet Age. We seem to think that, with the Internet, we have reached the pinnacle of technological advancement. Within the next few decades, however, the Internet will have faded away completely and something so much more totally awesome will have taken its place. It may sound inconceivable now, but one day when you tell your grandchildren of the good old days when you spent hours scrolling through social media on the Internet, they may ask you “what’s an Internet?” 5. Hovering skateboards. The producers of Back to the Future II were just a little off when they predicted that we would be riding around on hovering skateboards in 2015. But, rest assured, you will be able to buy your own hovering skateboard in the year 2041. And they will be just as awesome as they were in the movie. 6. Fashion will be exactly the same. If you were to time travel to October 21, 2041, you would find that fashion trends have not changed whatsoever. Skinny jeans, beanie hats, hipster glasses, skate shoes, and scarves will be just as hip and in style as they are now. Everything that is cool now will be just as cool twenty-six years from now. No need to worry about your kids being embarrassed by your sense of fashion in your college years, because they will think that you were just as rad as they are. 7. Canada will join the United States. Within the coming years, our friendly neighbors to the north will finally realize that they’d be better off as a member of the United States. What is perhaps more surprising is that the fifty current United States will have seceded from the United States of the future. This fledgling new nation, realizing that the name “Canada” is no longer taken, will adopt it as their own. The country we now know as the United States will be known as Canada, and what is now Canada will be called the United States of America. 8. Household chore apps. By 2041, someone will finally develop phone apps which will perform basic daily tasks, such as washing dishes, doing laundry, and mowing the lawn. When you want a piece of toast, you will be able to

simply open your ToasterTM app, apply your bread to the phone, and let the app work its magic. Why no one has thought of this before is honestly beyond me. 9. The nation will have elected its first robotic president. In 2041, robot XR3549 will be elected to an unprecedented fifth term as president of Canada (see prediction #7). XR3549, created in a lab at the University of Minnesota by a group of mad political scientists, will be programmed to be the ideal politician. But a glitch will cause something to go terribly wrong, giving XR3549 an insatiable desire to maintain its hold on power. Watch out. 10. You will still be totally bummed out about that test that you didn’t do as good on as you wanted to You remember that test you had on Monday that you

really wanted to get at least an 85% on and that you studied for literally all weekend? Of course you do because you got 76% and have been super upset about it all week. Despite what your friends say to comfort you, I predict that twenty-six years from now you will still be just as bummed out about it as you are right now. It will still pretty much seem like the end of the world. 11. The price of telegrams will rise. Currently, the cost of sending a hand-delivered telegram through the American Telegram Company is 79¢ per word. I predict that by 2041 the cost will have risen to somewhere around 89¢

“In 2041, robot XR3549 will be elected to an unprecedented fifth term as president of Canada.” due to inflation. 12. Powdered wigs will make a comeback. After roughly a couple centuries of being out of style, powdered wigs are due for a huge comeback. Those giant poofs of white hair, ubiquitous in portraits of the founding fathers, will be all the rage. I know I said that fashion won’t change, but this is the one exception. We will all come to realize that the 18th century was really onto something. 13. You will miss the lunar eclipse again. A few weeks ago, there was a rare combination of lunar eclipse and supermoon (when the moon appears the largest it ever does.) This won’t happen again until 2033 according to an article by Space.com. But you didn’t see it because you were laying on your couch watching Netflix. Your roommate Jeff even said “hey man, come look at the moon.” But, in between spoonfuls of Cookies ‘n’ Cream ice cream, you were like “nah, I just started the fifth season. I’ll see it next time it happens.”

Well, guess what? In 2041, you still won’t have seen it because you missed it again. This time you will be watching Netflix and eating Cookies ‘n’ Cream Dip’n Dots, the “Ice Cream of the Future.” “I’ll just catch it the next time it rolls around,” you will think to yourself. 14. 10IJUAOSHOMY3DKW. Prediction #14 is of utmost secrecy and importance. Therefore, I have mysteriously encrypted it in the following code: 4OPAE7DWCJGBI4CYVD4FICI3JSD (If you are able to decipher this message, please contact the CIA immediately at luke.larson-1@mnsu.edu.) 15. The Cubs win the World Series. After 134 long years of disappointment for their fans, the Chicago Cubs will finally claim another World Series title, defeating the Tokyo Giants 5-4 in a dramatic Game 7 at Wrigley Field, capped off by a towering walk-off homerun by centerfielder robot ZV9702.

LUKE LARSON Staff Writer Last Monday, the Spanish-language film “La Sombra Azul” was shown in Ostrander Auditorium. Shown with English subtitles, the movie was free and open to the public. Along with MSU students, professors, and others, the event was attended by the film’s director, Sergio Schmucler. A native of Córdoba, Argentina who had to escape to Mexico as a political exile, Schmucler was invited by MSU Spanish professor Dr. Alfredo Duplat Ayala. Schmucler’s film is certainly not for the faint of heart. It is set in the aftermath of a tumultuous period in Argentinian history and focuses on Javier Rodríguez, a man also from Córdoba, who was brutally tortured by police. This period, known as the “Dirty War,” was a time of persecution by an oppressive military dictatorship, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, in which tens of thousands of Argentinians were killed. Schmucler does not shy

away from showing the gruesome torture and violence that took place. The title, “La Sombra Azul,” means “the blue shadow,” referring to the fact that Rodríguez lived under the constant “shadow” of the police’s blue uniforms. Schmucler had an informal chat in Spanish with students after the film and made clear that his intention was that the viewer would be changed by the experience of having watched La Sombra Azul. “What I hoped to do with my movie what to question an official memory [of what happened in Argentina] which has been made to be the only memory and which requires the creation of heroes and villains,” Schmucler wrote in a statement originally in Spanish. “Americans should also reflect on what is being constructed as their official memory, which tends to leave out many non-politically correct voices. They should also reflect on the influence that their international state politics have had collaborating with the dictatorships of our countries in past decades and their current policy of interference in far-away countries.” The plot of La Sombra Azul focused specifically on Rodríguez’s attempt to bring justice to the former torturers of the Dirty War era for their human rights abuses. The

film is, in a way, a reflection of Schmucler’s own life. “I was born in Argentina and had to be exiled in Mexico for political reasons. All my work is dedicated to the issues related to that story, in my movies just as much as in my literary works. We could say that being uprooted is my central theme.” Schmucler was originally in the area for a presentation at Gustavus Adolphus College, which took place last night. Dr. Duplat Ayala saw it as an opportunity to invite the filmmaker to visit MSU. For Allie Mills, one of Professor Duplat Ayala’s students who attended the event, the Spanish, which she says she mostly understood, was not the hardest part. “I liked it. I just don’t know enough about the background, the history, so I was kind of lost.” “I liked the movie because it was a history lesson mixed in with a personal story,” says Shankar Noel, another one of the moviegoers. “It was very informative.” Noel’s classmate Reynaldo Alonzo echoed this sentiment. “It’s very useful to understand what went on in Argentina politically. I think it’s a movie that would be useful to show in a diverse cultural history class.”

Well, the Internet breaks. Or at least, the website selling the tickets crashes due to the high demand from moviegoers. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the newest installment in the film series, picking up years after the events in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. The final trailer, released Monday night, shows a much more in-depth look at the characters and events in the film. There are shots with-

New Power Rangers film coming in 2017 Lionsgate announces two cast members for upcoming reboot.

GABE HEWITT Staff Writer Lionsgate’s upcoming 2017 Power Rangers reboot movie has cast Nacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger. He joins 22-year-old Naomi Scott, the Pink Ranger, as the only announced cast of the film so far. If you aren’t familiar with the original Power Rangers series lore, it centers around five teenagers with attitude

who have been selected to protect Earth. The teenagers are able to “morph” into suits that give them special powers to take down the bad guys. When the bad guys grow to great sizes, the rangers jump into their machines, called “zords,” and combine to take down their enemy with tons of collateral damage. Reboots seem to be a common theme of the last decade or so. Some have gotten them right and others have fallen flat on their face. The Power Rangers reboot movie has all the potential to be great and could really change the game with its worldwide recognition. The original early 90s version of Power Rangers was bold itself. A review of the retro game, Virtual Bart Old The Simpsons game is quite boring, has little replay value.

WES HUNTINGTON Staff Writer In the early part of the 1990s, the FOX animated television show The Simpsons had exploded in popularity. There were many videogames based on the series and Virtual Bart was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis in late 1994. Published by Acclaim Entertainment (NBA Jam) and developed by Sculptured Software (Super Star Wars), Virtual Bart was typical fare with other The Simpsons games of the era. Acclaim was also the sole licensee for all videogames related to The Simpsons (such as Bart vs. The Space Mutants, Bart vs. The World, Krusty’s Fun House, and a whole host of others) until Acclaim lost the license in 1995 after the release of The Itchy and Scratchy Game for the Sega Game Gear. Most of these games basically dealt with a thin plot, while the gameplay was basically playing mini-games as long as you continued to rack up points and survive and above all complete the mini-game

gamefabrique.com you’ve gotten yourself entangled with. A similar game, entitled The Simpsons: Bart’s Nightmare, was released in 1992. The plot basically revolves around the Springfield Elementary School’s annual science fair. Bart looks at all of the displays, including his, which is basically Homer’s head in a jar. As he continues down the hallway, he sees a display for a virtual reality show and volunteers himself to be a guinea pig for the experiment. Bart begins to spin around in the machine, which will take him through several points in history. As the game begins, Bart is like a wheel and wherever it lands on, that’s where he goes. That was a typical The Simpsons videogame plot, and it is pa-

per-thin at best. There are six mini-games for you to try. One mini-game has Bart traveling through a post-apocalyptic Springfield (similar to the Mad Max film franchise) where he tries to survive an onslaught from the bullies Jimbo, Kearney, and Dolph. Another has Bart trying to ruin his class photo by throwing tomatoes at his fellow classmates to make them unfit to be photographed. A dinosaur mini-game has Bart naturally becoming a dinosaur and attacking ancestors of his family as well as trying to survive. Another mini-game goes back to Bart’s baby years as he tries to chase down an ice cream truck. Another involves Bart riding a long waterslide trying to find the farthest exit

(there are more exits but they are not the objective of that game). Finally, the last mini-game has Bart turned into a pig and his goal is to try to save himself as well as the other pigs from being slaughtered by Krusty the Klown’s cohorts. There are

a lot of throwbacks and sight gags to make you chuckle as you progress through the levels. There is a practice mode as well, where you can try out all six mini-games and try to improve upon your scores. This game really is downright boring. While the minigames are a fair share of variety, the game has little to no replay value. The pig and tomato mini-games are fairly fun, the rest are just plain dry in terms of gameplay. Virtual Bart is definitely a game that’s worth nothing, and the lack of multiplayer just makes the game virtually unplayable. If you can avoid it, you should. However, it should be enjoyed by die-hard fans of the show as Nancy Cartwright does a good job as playing Bart in the game as well as Dan Castellaneta as Homer.

TICKETS Continued from page 9 Luke Skywalker. He hasn’t appeared in any of the teaser trailers, nor does he show up in the final trailer. Disney, who owns the rights to the Star Wars films, has confirmed that Mark Hamill, who originally played Skywalker in the films, will be in the film reprising his role. There is one character in the final trailer who has created a helmet that looks remarkably similar to Darth Vader’s helmet, which is causing some fans to wonder: Has Luke Skywalker turned to the Dark Side, and is using the Force for evil like his

father? That question will only have an answer once the film is released Dec. 18. Of course, once fans finally got to see the new trailer, they went crazy for the film and jumped online to buy their tickets in advance. With this sudden influx of ticket buyers, ticketing websites, including AMC Theaters and Fandango.com, either became significantly slow or crashed. So far, one ticketing website has apologized to fans for being unprepared for the feeding frenzy that ensued. Alamo Drafthouse, a

Texas-based theater chain, thought they were prepared for selling advanced tickets and apologized to fans for turning their exciting day into a tiring and obnoxious time. The entire ticketing fiasco actually had fans giving up on their computers and instead buying their tickets in-person at theater box offices. If these events on Monday night have shown anything, it’s that the Force is strong with the Star Wars fan base.

A look at the MTV slasher series, Scream Classic horror film revamped as TV show is surprisingly good.

MARYSA STORM Staff Writer Scream, which was originally a 90s horror flick (and later movie series), was revamped as a TV show this summer and, believe it or not, the concept translated well to TV. Scream, which aired on MTV this summer, doesn’t stray far from the elements of the beloved original. While the key concepts between the two remain the same, smart updates were made to the series and it is perhaps even more self-aware than the original. In fact, there is a scene within the first episode where a character explains why a slasher TV show would never work. There is irony there not only because those

theghostlywalker.blogspot.com words are spoken in a slasher series, but because those words are spoken in a slasher series that works. The series, also like the movie, follows a good girl archetype who is targeted by a masked killer. In the series, this girl is Emma Duval (Willa Fitzgerald) and everyone around her, from her friends

to her teachers to her mother (Tracy Middendorf), aren’t safe from the killer and his games. As the series goes on, it is revealed that the killer is trying to hurt Emma and those close to her because of a painful incident in her mother’s past. As the mystery comes to light, it appears as if anyone could be the killer,

RANGERS Continued from page 9 done to make it a hit. Casting The casting of Scott and Montgomery makes a great statement for the direction the movie wants to take. They aren’t new to the acting world but aren’t anywhere near being big name actors either. These two are what a Power Ranger is supposed to be, an unknown with something to prove. Power Rangers are supposed to be a “nobody” and the audience will feel that more if they aren’t familiar with the actors. Lionsgate should follow suit and cast unknown actors to round out the rest of the ranger set. Their biggest casting should come for the antagonist role. Story I’ll be very interested to see if they input a new storyline into this movie or borrow storylines from the original series. If it’s the latter, they’ll go with a classic villain like Lord Zedd, the embodiment of every child’s nightmares but with a humorous demeanor. The

PG-13 rating of the movie gives some flexibility to be a little bit darker than the original series that was written for children. In the TV series, sparks would fly off the Power Rangers’ costumes when they were attacked with a weapon. That sugarcoating of violence has no place in Hollywood, so some blood will have to be shed which would be a first for the franchise. No matter what the script takes inspiration from, it has to be edgier than the TV series. Creating a story strictly for children will not make it as successful as it could be. Follow the superhero formula If there’s anything that’s been proven in the entertainment industry this century, it’s that superheroes sell. Marvel has built an entire universe around a set of smaller universes that’s made them billions of dollars and DC is only starting their own world. Simply put, people love heroes. They’ll pay money to go see a superhero movie even when

they know they’ll always prevail in the end and take down the bad guys. If the writers and director of the Power Rangers reboot depict them as superheroes, they’ll attract the same people. This includes an origin story and a classic story of good vs. evil that never could have been seen in the real world. Lionsgate has a really great opportunity to make this a truly great reboot. Power Rangers is one of the most storied pop culture franchises in history and they should use that to their advantage. They have to find a way to formulate the script so that casual moviegoers will enjoy it just as much as the longtime fans. A central theme in the TV series is that Power Rangers are heroes but they’re also just everyday people who change into costumes when there’s trouble. If they can get this theme right, they’ll get the movie right.

even one of Emma’s closest friends. Believe it or not, the series does a lot of things right. The level of gore is pleasantly jarring and the twists are consistent enough to keep things moving. The characters aren’t

completely unlikeable and it isn’t hard to find at least one or two that you’ll be rooting for through the entire season. That being said, the show’s downfalls do go on for quite a while. Like many TV shows featuring high school students, Scream is full of characters too well-dressed and beautiful to be remotely believable as actual high school students. This can usually be dismissed as the nature of the beast, but in Scream it is almost distracting. As are the characters’ increasingly bad choices. Characters in slasher movies aren’t known for being multi-dimensional and for making the right choices, but Scream takes this to a whole new level. All in all, the series isn’t the original Scream movie and it doesn’t try to be. The show may be geared towards a different generation, but even fans of the original may be able to sit back and enjoy an episode or two.

Singers release new music following split Songs may provide insight to relationship between Taylor Swift, Harry Styles.

KAARINA MAKI Staff Writer When two people who are dating also happen to be in the same profession, a breakup could lead to competition between the two exes. The music industry is probably where this competition is most public, therapeutic, and enjoyed by the listeners. Taylor Swift and Harry Styles used to be the biggest couple in the entertainment/ music industry back in 2012. Once they broke up, Taylor Swift used this heartbreak as a major source of inspiration

teenzonemagazine.co.za for her most popular album

“One track on the album, called ‘Out of the Woods,’ is rumored to be about a trip the two singers took where Styles injured his hand.”

so far, 1989. One track on the album, called “Out of the Woods,” is rumored to be about a trip the two singers took where Styles injured his hand. Of course, the song that most obviously reflects Swift’s feelings for her ex is “Style,” which Swift has joked that she should have just called “I’m Not Even Sorry.” Now, Harry Styles is having his moment to (musically) talk about his relationship with Taylor Swift. A week

ago, the popular boy band One Direction released a new song off of their upcoming album Made In The A.M. The track is called “Perfect” and was co-written by Styles and band member Louis Tomlinson. When One Direction released the song, fans were quick to notice how the rhythm of the song was eerily similar to Swift’s “Style,” and they have also noticed one particular set of lyrics sung by Styles, which goes “And

if you’re looking for someone to write your breakup songs about/ Baby I’m perfect/ Baby we’re perfect.” On Tuesday night, One Direction released the music video for “Perfect,” which portrays the group members doing some of their favorite things in New York City. The video was shot in black and white and was directed by Sophie Muller, who has also worked with artists such as Rihanna, Pink, and Beyoncé. Once fans watched the video, they noticed some shots that seemed similar to another music video (hint: it stars Styles’ ex). Fans were quick to notice that some of the visuals used in the video for “Perfect” were also seen in the video for “Style.” Whether the lyrics in “Perfect” actually do pertain to Taylor Swift is still a mystery, and is likely to remain that way, considering that Harry Styles is possibly the most reserved member of One Direction. The video for “Perfect” can be seen on YouTube or on Vevo.com. One Direction’s newest album, Made In The A.M., is expected to be released on Nov. 13. The band is currently touring their album, Four, in Europe and is expected to take a hiatus in 2016.

Sports Mavericks set to battle Warriors

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer The Mavericks will play host to the Winona State Warriors for the first time in 2015, as both teams have gone different directions this season. The Warriors have gone 3-4 this season, losing their past two matchups to Sioux Falls and Upper Iowa. In the meantime, the Mavericks are ranked number one in the latest NCAA Division-II polls, as they have not moved from that spot all season long. They are looking to cap this year off

Rugby falls over the weekend

SHAWN CLOSE Staff Writer The Minnesota State University, Mankato men’s team faced a tough challenge this weekend, squaring off with 17th ranked Winona. The Mavericks fell behind early in the contest to a well-disciplined Winona team, trailing 26-5 at half. The second half proved more productive on offense, with a triplet of rookies, Alex Van Heel, Jesse Johnson and Denver Quenette, recording scores. However, the Mavericks were unable to hold off the Winona offensive, and lost the contest 50-22.

better than last season’s, and finish with a championship trophy in their hands. The last matchup between WSU and MSU was during last season, when the Mavericks traveled on the road to defeat the Warriors 44-24. The Mavericks are indeed rolling this season, and the season is getting closer and closer to the end. They are all over the leaderboards in NCAA Division-II statistics as a team. According to ncaa. com the Mavericks rank 15th overall in rushing offense, which has been their bread and butter all season long. Their defense has also been overwhelming opposing offenses, as they rank fourth in the nation in total defense. Senior linebacker Tyler Henderson leads the defense with 45 tackles on the season, while senior defensive lineman Josh Gordon has tallied a whopping 16 tackles for a loss. The tandem of those two, combined with the rest

VOLLEYBALL Photo by Trevor Cokley of the defense as a whole is always going to be difficult to score on. When it comes to offense, the Mavericks have plenty of options to go to. The Mavs have now developed a three-man rushing attack out of the backfield this season, with seniors Connor Thomas, Chad Zastrow and junior Virgil Hammond racking up the stat sheets. The quarterbacking duo of sophomore Nick Pieruccini and senior Ricky Lloyd has worked well, with Lloyd vastly improving his play as the year has trekked on. It is a very well balanced offense this season, mixed with a dominating defense. Winona State has had a very interesting season that has had its share of ups and downs. Some games they have looked like the better teams, yet others they have looked as if something was missing. The Mavericks will have to keep up the pace on defense, capitalize on turnovers and stay balanced on

the offensive end to win this ballgame. The Warriors do like passing the ball quite often, as quarterback Jack Nelson has thrown for 2,251 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. Linebacker Collin Corcoran is the guy to look for on defense, as he is having quite the season. He has tallied 71 tackles and 10 tackles for loss. The Mavericks are easily the favorite in this one, as they have been in every game this season. The Mavericks have won 40 straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games, and are looking to continue that unbelievable streak. This will be Head Coach Todd Hoffner’s 70th game coaching MSU, where he has already won 55 of those matchups. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM Saturday at Blakeslee Stadium.

Top picks for your fantasy basketball team

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer The NBA season is set to start in less than a week, so you know what that means. Fantasy basketball is back! With the rise of websites like FanDuel and DraftKings fantasy sports are more popular than there ever been. In preparation for the season let’s take a look at my predictions for the top three players at each position. Point Guards: 3) John Wall - The Washington Wizards point guard has been steadily improving since he entered the NBA, and last year he looked as if he was finally reaching his potential. Wall posted a career best field goal percentage last season, in addition to that he had career high assists per game, and tie his career high rebounds. While his points per game dropped a little, the areas of improvement he did have should still give fantasy owners something to look forward to. 2) Russell Westbrook Westbrook had a career year last season, but it came because of the loss of Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant. During his absence, Wesbrook nearly averaged a triple double per game with a statline of 28.1 points, 8.1 assists, and 7.3 rebounds per game. These numbers are likely to dip a little with the return of Durant, but there is no reason to believe the explosive point guard won’t still be doing damage on a nightly basis. 1) Stephen Curry - What more can be said about the reigning MVP that hasn’t already been said? Curry will be a surefire top three pick when it comes to fantasy drafts around the world, and for good reason. With outstanding numbers in almost every category, along with an amazing cast around him that also demand attention, Curry is a clear cut number one pick in the point guard position. As Curry enters his seventh season the sky’s the limit for what he can accomplish in his NBA career. Shooting Guards: 3) Klay Thompson - CoSplash Brother Klay Thompson had himself a breakout

year that would have led him to team star status almost anywhere else. The young SG had his best year in three pointers hitting an average of three a game with a career best .439% percent from beyond the arc. Thompson also had career bests in several other categories including; steals, blocks, assists and points per game. With the entire league now gunning for Golden State, in addition to Alvin Gentry heading to New Orleans to be head coach it wouldn’t be surprise if his numbers drop a little but he is still a top pick. 2) Jimmy Butler - OK, now hear me out. Butler over Thompson? Sure, it isn’t the “safe” bet, but sometimes a person needs to roll the dice and hope to reap the rewards. With the Chicago Bulls’ PG Derrick Rose in a constant state of fluctuation, Butler could soon become the lead of the team once again. Even if Rose manages to stay healthy for a whole year it can do nothing but good and help Butler get openings. After recording career highs, or nearly matching them, Butler should excel once again and help take the Bulls to that next level. 1) James Harden - Harden may not have won the official MVP award, but he did get voted the MVP from his fellow NBA players. The uncontested leader of the Houston Rockets made a strong argument as to why he is the best shooting guard in the league. Averaging a PG like 7 assists a game last season, that stat may take a dive thanks to the addition of Ty Lawson, but it should also help him commit less turnovers and be the recipient of more assists. Harden should prove once again why he is among the elite players in the NBA. Small Forwards: 3) Kawhi Leonard - Carmello Anthony almost made this spot, but his bad knees and declining play are too much of a risk. The safest bet lies in Kawhi Leonard. Leonard has never been a fantasy darling, but he is young, coached by Greg Popovich, and has yet to reach his peak. He may not rack up the points on a regular basis, but you are sure to get production from him no matter what. 2) Kevin Durant - One of the biggest question marks heading into the season is can Kevin Durant bounce back from an injury that his been a career ender for some? Foot injuries in basketball are nothing to take lightly, but Durant has shown no signs of slowing down in the

preseason. The other thing to consider before drafting Durant is will Westbrook’s stellar season take away from his touches? Even if this is the case, much like Westbrook, there shouldn’t be any worry about his productivity. Keep an eye on where he lands in your draft because he could end up being a steal. 1) Lebron James - James may not be the number one overall pick that he once was, but his sheer dominance makes him a high draft pick no matter how you cut it. Last years playoff run, and more specifically in the finals, where he put his team on his shoulders amidst a wide array of injuries to his teammates solidified him as one of the greatest to ever play. James did have many career lows stat wise, but factoring in the learning curve of playing with new teammates, and the mentioned injuries it is understandable. With a healthy Cavaliers team ready to take court, and a year of chemistry built in, expect James to have a better year as he looks to redeem his team. Power Forwards: 3) Chris Bosh - Much like Jimmy Butler, this may be looked at as a risky pick. However, Bosh started last season playing arguably better than he ever had before. We’ll never know how well he could have continued to play because of blood clots that kept him out of the season, but we should get a taste of what could have been this year. With the addition to Goran Dragic to the team, Bosh should benefit greatly from having him around. 2) LaMarcus Aldridge New city, new team, same Aldridge. There is an argument to be said that Aldridge’s stats may go down under the direction of Popovich, but there is also an argument to be made that his skills will become more refined than ever. Between the benefits having a great coaching staff, stronger teammates, and a winning environment it isn’t beyond the realm of possibility to expect Aldridge to flourish in his new setting. 1) Anthony Davis - The man that is very likely going to be the most drafted number one pick in leagues this season is Davis, and for very good reason. The rising star is looking like he will be the future of the NBA, and with new head coach and offensive guru Alvin Gentry leading the way there is no telling what the ceiling is going to be for the young PF. Gentry has already gone on record of saying he wants Davis to take

more three pointers which would only make an already dangerous weapon become lethal. Barring any major injuries, Davis is going to be a top tier fantasy pick for quite some time to come. Centers 3) Marc Gasol - Gasol could be considered “Mr. Reliable” when it comes to fantasy play due to his ability to put up points, grab boards, and dish assists. Last season he managed to achieve his best scoring-per-game to date, but it may be asking a little much to expect that from him again. Even if he doesn’t achieve the scoring heights that he reached last year, he can still be counted on to have a good shooting percentage and ability to put up numbers across the board makes him a sound pick. 2) Rudy Gobert - The youthful star from the Utah Jazz has made waves very early into his career. Entering just his third season, he is already looked at as top prospect in fantasy leagues for the center position. His game

is very much still a work in progress, and his free throw percentage could still use work, but his ability is ripe for potential. The giant is poised to break out as a star as some point, and in a league where true centers are becoming harder and harder to find, fantasy owners that take the chance on him should be happily reaping the rewards shortly after. 1) Demarcus Cousins - Despite all the off-season drama that accompanied Cousins, coach George Karl, and the Sacramento Kings, Cousins is still the clear-cut number one center in the NBA. Cousins has averaged a double-double per game in his career with total averages of 18 points and 10 rebounds per outing. Last year he topped his career average with 24 points and 12 rebounds when stepping on the court. Yet another example of a star that is still learning and yet to peak, if Cousins and Karl get on the same page Cousins could be in line for a monster year.

Volleyball can’t slow down Golden Bears

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The Minnesota State volleyball team faced another tough opponent Tuesday night at the Taylor Center. The Mavericks fell in three straight sets to Concordia-St. Paul. The Golden Bears, who are ranked fourth, defeated MSU by scores of 26-24, 2515 and 25-15. The Mavericks fell behind early in the first set. CU had several kills and three service aces to jump ahead. The Mavs took a timeout to get back into focus but the Golden Bears were not letting up, stretching the lead to 16-7 in the middle of the set. Something sparked the Purple and Gold as they went on an attack spree, which led to an 11-4 run. The set was all tied 24-24 when CU went in for the kill, two to be exact. Those two Golden Bear kills sealed set one 26-24. MSU attempted to take the early lead in set two with a score of 2-0 but the Golden Bears were not going to let up. CU went on a 7-0 run, compiled of four kills, one ace and two MSU errors. The Mavs tried to hang on, only down by 2 at 10-8 but CU was

too much. Set two ended in CU’s favor with a 25-15 score. The Mavericks had one last chance to stay alive against the Golden Bears in the third set. CU built a lead towards the middle of the match however, the Mavs got a little boost from the Golden Bears. CU committed four straight errors leading to a 13-11 score with MSU in the lead. The Mavericks were on a hot streak, building their biggest lead of the match to 17-11 but the Golden Bears struck back. CU tied things up 20-20. The Mavericks tried to gather themselves during a timeout but it was not enough. CU finished the set on a 5-1 run to close out the match 3-0. Junior Krista Hassing led the offensive attack for the Mavericks with 11 kills and three blocks. Other juniors Sydney Geisness and Courtney Anderson each added seven kills to the stat sheet. Geisness also collected two aces during the match. Freshman Autumn Risch led the Mavs with 26 assists and five digs. Junior Rissi McNallan led the defense with 13 digs followed by junior Haley Fogarty with nine digs. MSU again struggled offensively in the match, posting a .144 attack percentage compared to CU’s .279 attack percentage. The Mavericks are averaging a .221 attack percentage on the season and 12.9 attacks per set. MSU’s recent offensive struggle could be attributed to serves. The Purple and Gold have com-

Lexi Platz (13) has 150 kills and 18 total blocks so far this season. mitted 216 service errors in the season compared to their opponents with 123 service errors. MSU has eight regular season matches left. There are four home matches and four away matches. With the loss to Concordia-St. Paul the Mavericks overall record falls to 12-8 and 6-6 in NSIC play. The Mavericks next two matches will be played at the Taylor Center. They host Minnesota Duluth Friday at 7 p.m. and St. Cloud State University Saturday at 4 p.m.
