Time to reveal your inner demons Renowned exorcist comes to recount experiences with darkness. ALEX KERKMAN Staff Writer Father Vincent Lampert, the official exorcist of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, will be coming to visit Minnesota State Mankato, University on Thursday, October 30 at 9:30 pm. Lampert’s ministry has seen a rise in fame since the release of the 2011 film, The Rite starring Anthony Hopkins. The movie is based on a true story, and the main character studied together with Lampert in Rome while on Sabbatical in 2005. Joe Bakken, campus minister for MSU, was responsible for Lampert coming to the school for a visit. “I’m very excited to have Father Lampert here to speak,” Bakken said. “He’s one of about
50 exorcists in the country, and one of the few permitted to speak publically on the matter. I don’t even know who our own archdiocese’s exorcist is.” Lampert has spoken at several universities across the country, including North Dakota State University, and University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He usually talks about how he became an exorcist, and gives details of cases that he has personally dealt with. “Having him here to talk about his experiences is a really special occasion,” Bakken said. “Exorcists’ work are usually kept secret from the public. He’s been given special permission to make people know about the presence of evil.” With the fall weather comes scary movie seasons, with favorites covering exorcisms including The Exorcist, The Conjuring,

and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Lampert becomes much busier in October, and Bakken expects a big crowd. “It’s an event that won’t come around too often. It’s going to answer some questions, and definitely get people thinking. It’s a good experience for everyone,” Lampert said. Apart from his impact on The Rite, Lampert also appeared in the season 3, episode 19 of the SyFy channel original series Paranormal Witness, where he shares one of his exorcism stories. “Father Lampert uses these speaking opportunities as a ministry to create awareness of the real presence of evil,” Bakken explained. “In all of his experiences as an exorcist, he has always come to the same conclusion—spoiler alert—Jesus always wins.” An exorcist will go through

many different criteria before performing on exorcism. Lampert covers some of this criteria, including having an ability to speak unknown languages, unhuman-like strength, the knowledge of the unknown, and an inexplicable aversion to holy places. Exorcism are used only as a last resort by a trained priest by the Catholic church. Lampert’s talk will take place in the CSU Ballroom and will start at 9:30 p.m. The talk will run about an hour in length, and may have a questions and answer portion afterwards. Anyone who would like more information of Lampert’s visit should contact Bakken at the St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center, on the corner of Warren St. and Maywood St. Lampert is the official exorcist of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, an office to which Archbishop Daniel M. The gossip behind the yak Anonymous Twitter gives students the confidence they didn’t have before. BROOKE EMMONS Staff Writer Only 11 months ago, the world of social media was changed yet again. The rules are simple: do not bully or specifically target other yakers, no phone numbers, don’t clutter the feed with pointless offensive yaks, you can get suspended, and simply ride the yak.
Yik Yak started in November 2013 by two 23-year-old graduates of Furman University in South Carolina. After learning how to code iPhone apps, they dropped out of med school and put their future careers on hold. Now Tyler Droll and Brooks Buffington are owners of a top ten most downloaded social media app in the U.S. The technology is relatively

simple. It is a combination of GPS and Twitter, allowing users to collect feeds of yaks from people in their area. Best part is, the yaks are completely anonymous. Since the apps GPS technology only allows the users feed to hold a couple miles radius of their phone, the app is perfect for college campuses. Rankings in app stores reached there highest in Aug. as students headed back to school, and they have stayed there ever since. This fall, Yik Yak grew from 200 college campuses to over 1,000. The app was developed in Atlanta, so naturally it is most commonly found in the southern parts of the United States. But, the craze has found a way to quickly make its way to Mankato, Minnesota. Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Yik Yak feed is comparable to those of other campuses. Feeds range from complaints of exams to venting about roommates to where everyone is hanging out on that given night. Chieng Moua, a senior here at MSU, laughed when asked about the app. “I do not post often, but I do read the feed.” Moua said, “The most up votes I have gotten is 54, but I am more interested in seeing other people’s opinions.” Others around MSU have not

yet heard of the app that’s taken parts of campus by storm. The younger students seem to be more prevalent on the feed, with many yaks about the dorms. Anthony Thielk, an MSU Senior was not impressed with the app.

Major Fair returns to campus once again Helpful event hopes to guide students in a decisive direction.
YUSEONG JEON Staff Writer
Major Fair, coordinated by the Career Development Center, will be held with a free admission from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. October 29 in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Major Fair’s purpose is to give students chances to explore their options for majors, minors and careers and answering students’ questions regarding majors and future careers. In the Major Fair, all kinds of professionals such as academic advisor, faculty, staff, career counselor, and student organization will discuss students’ concerns regarding their majors. Career Exploration Coordinautor Matt Carlson said, “Major Fair has been held more than 10
years. This is a long tradition of Minnesota State University regarding major and career development.” The professionals will take four steps to help students to select their majors; choosing, changing, learning, and confirming. In the process, the professionals will provide not just verbal advice, but also an opportunity to learn how to use an online career and planning program, FOCUS. Through the FOCUS program, MSU students can explore the most compatible career fields and majors and assess their personal qualities whether they are appropriate to different fields they are interested in. All students, not just freshmen, are invited to the Major Fair. For the students who already chose their majors, the Major Fair will provide advice about what major they have cho-
sen and help them with choosing minors or joining their major clubs. In fact, the Major Fair is more popular to sophomores than freshmen. Carlson said, “I was surprised at first but realized that sophomores are more struggling with choosing majors because they are closer to time they have to choose their majors than freshmen.” Students who are in a high level of college, such as junior or senior, can also receive assistance related to careers in their fields and check if they made a right choice about their majors and if they are going in a right direction. However, the professionals in the Major Fair only advise and help students and they don’t recommend majors to students. Carlson said, “We teach them how to catch the fish, not catch the fish for them. The students
are the one who will choose their majors because they should learn how to make a decision in their lives. This process of making a choice will repeat over and over again in their lives. Thus, students have to make their own choice about their majors.” In the Major Fair, all sorts of different colleges and departments in the university will come to promote their departments and majors and share more information with students. The Major Fair is held annually in Oct. because students have to register their classes next semester in right after next month. “I think I always look forward to this time of the year to meet and connect to students in an informal setting. I expect about 500 to 800 students would come to our Major Fair,” Carlson said. The Career Development

A not-so smoke-free campus One student questions the logic in the often neglected ban.
JOE OLKIVES Staff Writer Since early 2011 the university has implemented a tobaccofree/smoke-free campus. This includes the use of electronic cigarettes and chewing tobacco on campus. When I was a freshman in 2010 people would gather outside the dormitories, Memorial Library, Centennial Student Union, and several other academic buildings for a quick smoke break between classes and studying. I would be in class and there would be kids usually sitting in the back of class using a water bottle as a “spitter,” chewing tobacco in the lecture. At the time, I was a regular smoker. I remember being able to go outside in between classes and lighting one up. Although I have quit smoking since then for the most part, I have only seen a small decrease in the number of people smoking outside in the usual smoking areas. Every once and a while, after a long day of school, I will go to the back outside corner of Armstrong Hall, outside the library, or right out the back of the

Centennial Student Union to see if I can bum a quick smoke off someone. Most of the time, like clockwork, someone will be sitting out there getting ready to
light one up. While it may have scared some people from smoking on campus, I don’t believe it means everyone just quit. The only real
difference I notice is, there are no cigarette receptacles anymore. Instead of people disposing of their cigarettes in those designated areas, they just throw them on the ground. While preparing this article I went out to go see if I could catch anyone out there trying to light one up. I found several people outside smoking and I casually bummed a smoke off one them so I didn’t seem nosey asking them a bunch of questions. I asked one girl if she knew it was smoke free, and she replied, “Yes, I know it is, but no one seems to care. I had some obese lady yell at me one time and tell me it wasn’t healthy to smoke. I thought, neither is being obese and no one’s addressing obesity as an issue.” The tobacco free policy was created to promote clean, safe, and healthy living, learning, and working environment for all students and employees of the University. I haven’t heard of any sort of sanctions if you get caught smoking on campus, nor have I witnessed or met with anyone who says that they have been in violation of this policy. With that in mind and people continuing to smoke, what is the point of having a smoke-free/tobacco-

Career Expo The time-consuming evil of Buzzfeed launches
facebook.com Brooke Emmons, MSU freshman, staff writer and assistant news editor.
BROOKE EMMONS Staff Writer
Yohanes Ashenafi • MSU Reporter Minnesota State University, Mankato’s annaul Career Expo, where students flock to seek potential career-related futures.
When I begin the journey of procrastinating my massive amounts of homework, papers, readings, and study guides, I typically begin with the classic: Facebook. What used to be a place to stalk friends of friend’s high school homecoming pictures five years back now holds another evil. It will only take a few seconds of scrolling through my feed before I discover a list of things that are perfectly applicable to my life. Something like, “27 Signs That Your Best Friend is Your Sister.” Next thing, I’m posting the link to my best friend’s wall and calling her to tell her I love her at 1 in the afternoon. By the time I get off the phone, I have been browsing BuzzFeed for half an hour and my day is over. BuzzFeed is a social news and entertainment company founded in 2006 by Jonah Peretti in New York City. Since its creation, BuzzFeed has managed to create hundreds of lists with gifs and pictures perfectly describing life in a witty way. The site has also developed into a global media company that covers topics including politics and business. But, no one goes to BuzzFeed for news. Instead, BuzzFeeders spend their time in the Buzz, Life, Entertainment, Quizzes and Videos sections. In the Buzz section, you can
find amazing lists that have no point other than wasting time, such as “17 Times Taylor Swift Was The Cat Lady You Aspire To Be.” Venture to the Life tab and find helpful hints on life including food, DIY, style, parents, and travel. These topics are, of course, directed to the young adult audience who will be reading, “You’ve Been Pouring Juice All Wrong”, until they look outside and notice the sun has gone down, and it has been four hours since they began their Buzz serf. Entertainment holds all the juicy gossip and drama of your favorite Netflix shows, the other
obsession that you would rather downplay and pretend that you have control over. Do not fear, everyone is guilty of Netflix and BuzzFeed binging at some point of their lives. BuzzFeed quizzes will answer all the questions you have about who you really are. This is why you came to college anyway. Move away from home, live on your own, take 40 credits of Gen Ed credits, its all to discover yourself. Speed up the process by diving into, “Which Television Dude Should You Marry?” or maybe, “How Normal Are You?” If your results are not what you wanted you can retake the quizzes until you get exactly what you want. It will be a long and difficult process, but you can not settle for being Kris Jenner when you are clearly Khloe. Videos come last because they require the least amount of effort and at this point of your BuzzFeed adventure you are beginning to get tired. Wind down after all of the work of scrolling through 102 cat gifs and selecting answers to quizzes with, “If Men Lost Their Virginity Like Women Lose Theirs” or “Americans Taste Test Japanese Kit Kits.” Congratulations, you have wasted your entire day on BuzzFeed. And though you swear to yourself that next time you will study and not procrastinate, you will do it again. Do not fight it; just love it for what it is.

Construction Management 40th Anniversary History and hijinks event is quickly approaching. YUSEONG JEON Staff Writer The Department of Construction Management at Minnesota State University, Mankato is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The celebration is going to be held at 6 p.m. Friday at Wabasha Street Caves, located in 215 S. Wabasha St., in St. Paul. At the event, past and present faculty and students will have time to reconnect. Not only are some of the alumni coming from several states outside of Minnesota for the big celebration, but also people from Minnesota will join the event to enjoy the reunion time. Assistant Professor Brian Wasserman said, “Our construction management department is 40 years old. It will be a great chance to reconnect with people at the reunion.” In addition to reconnecting
with old friends, attendants will also be able to make new business peers in industry at the event. Many alumni and professors including Wasserman and Scott Fee, the dean of University Extended Education, will attend. The event was supposed to start with a special fireside chat with Dr. Carl Egan, program director of the reunion event. However, he will not be able to attend the event because he is in China for his business. Thus, the event will be hosted by alumni Al Gerhardt, ‘80, chief operating officer of Kraus Anderson; Mike Cairl, ’83, executive vice president, Ryan Companies; Dan Stanley, ‘85, president, Stanley and Wencl LLC; and Josh Bergstrom ‘00, project supervisor, Ryan Companies. “It has been a long time since we had time to get together because we are busy as people in
industry. We have not done this decades. It is about time that people who have been out of school a long time take a few minutes to reflect back to what it was like when they went to school,” Wasserman said. “I hope it would be a great time to reconnect people who have not seen each other 20 to 30 years,” Wasserman continued. A lot of fun activities will be prepared for attendants. Alumni are invited for games, camaraderie and more. Casino Night and other fun games with buffet dinner and cash bar prizes while attendants chat will also be provided. Special music for the event will be performed by alumnus Chad Pfeifer and his band. Chad Pfeifer graduated with construction and management degree at Minnesota State Mankato and

Habitat for Humanity gives back Non-profit continues to help others in need with fundraiser.
BROOKE EMMONS Staff Writer
Habitat for Humanity: creating a world where everyone has a decent place to live, one pin at a time. This coming Saturday, Oct. 25, Habitat for Humanity of South Central Minnesota will be hosting a fundraiser at Jerry Dutler’s Bowl for “Color Pin.” Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Christian organization that believes every man, woman, and child should have the ability to live in a decent, safe, and affordable place. Worldwide, Habitat has partnered with over 500,000 families in order to build over 500,000 houses. With extensive effort from the future homeowners in both mtheir own home and other projects, Habitat for Humanity is
capable of helping people build a suitable house. The new home is often more affordable for the family than their previous living arrangements that were dangerous and unhealthy for the family. This is possible through donations of labor, materials and financial support. As a nonprofit group, Habitat for Humanity enters the surplus money from the families mortgage into a revolving fund in order to build more homes. The South Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity created another form of fundraising. In 2007, Habitat opened a store titled ReStore. At ReStore, they sell donated home improvement materials. When ReStore was built, Habitat for Humanity was unaware how extremely successful the business would be. The profits from ReStore alone raise enough to build one
complete home for a local family. Another positive impact of ReStore is how great it is for the environment. In one year ReStore has prevented 850 tons of waste from entering the local Mankato landfill. With a strong response from the community, who also benefits from the affordable prices, averaging 25-50% off retail, Habitat for Humanity decided in 2012 it was time to expand. The building is crammed, and hard to keep organized for shoppers. Also, they must store a large part of sales merchandise on other sites, because of lack of space. This impairs sales as well as adds more cost of labor to ReStore. Habitat for Humanity has been raising funds in order to continue with their ReStore expansion. So far, they are only at 15 percent of their goal funds.
mankatotimes.com Habitat for Humanity strives for excellence in serving those in need, especially with their ReStore efforts.
This is where the pins, lanes and bowling balls come in. Saturday’s activities will take place at Jerry Dutler’s Bowl, 1247 Range St., Mankato, MN. Games can be played from 11:00 a.m. until close for the affordable price of $15 per three games. Those under 18 can play three games for $10. To add to the excitement, cash and prizes will be given out throughout the event. The
Grand prize is a $250 ReStore gift certificate, for a little home redecorating or refurbishing. All proceeds of the event will go to the Habitat Restore Expansion, which will benefit the entire community of Mankato. For further information about Habitat for Humanity, volunteering opportunities, or the ReStore location, visit www.hfhsouthcentral.net

now he is a country music singer. The Construction Management Program at Minnesota State Mankato started officially with four students in 1974. In 1976, it had first two graduates. Currently, more than 1,000 people with construction management degree at MSU are in industry since 1980. The Wabasha Street Caves, which the construction management department rented, is
famous for providing gangster tour with an opportunity to experience the gangster’s life in the past, such as nightclubs, kidnappings and gun battles. The nightclubs were hideouts of the gangsters who used to spend time socializing with the public. In fact, the three caves were inhabited by famous gangsters such as John Dillinger, Ma Barker and Babyface Nelson in 1930s. They were notorious for most
cruel crimes in the upper Midwest. The three caves are large enough to accommodate from 50 to 100 people in each one. The attendance fee of the construction management department’s reunion is $65. continued from 2 their campuses’ feed. MSU is not yet available on this option, but there is speculation to it being added to the list soon. Newly added to the app in the peek tab is feeds in which are not limited to your GPS. These feeds are open to users everywhere and include 2014 World Series Banter, Hogwarts, Walking Dead Survival Guide, and Halloween Costume Ideas. Though the app has many fun uses, it has been used in practical situations. The University of Alabama students used Yik Yak to announce that a serious
storm was on it’s way while the campus alert system failed to do so due to technical difficulties. Many believe the app is neither helpful nor fun, but actually a method of bullying. Since the yaks are posted anonymously, users have the ability to post something that is untrue or offensive about another person without the repercussions. “The App is to put out anonymous opinions, and that does backfire. I have seen mean yaks. Sometimes people are toxic about their attitude.” Moua said, “The trend will fade.”

SMOKE-FREE “I haven’t heard of any sort of sanctions if you get caught smoking on campus” continued from 4
free campus if people aren’t going to respect the rules? There is no clear enforcement of this policy and the cigarette receptacles are all removed creating a mess around the corners of the buildings and previous designated smoking areas people continue to use. I think a better idea would have been to better educate students on the dangers of smoking and encourage them not to use tobacco. Instead they came up with a policy that isn’t enforced or followed. The removal of the receptacles only adds to the problem. While I don’t agree fines are a fair solution, I think this policy should have either been better enforced or had no
change at all. If people are going to smoke, they are going to smoke. I think it would have been best to keep it how it was. Keep the campus clean by having the cigarette disposals and let people who smoke suffer the consequences. Issues like obesity can be just as deadly and no one is trying to take away Taco Bell on campus. I am not encouraging smoking and I believe most people who do smoke know the dangers well. The policy looks good in the community and on paper, but I don’t think it’s right to have a policy that is being completely ignored. From what I see, nothing has really changed.
Users can report yaks in which break the rules and the team behind the app typically takes the post down within minutes. Whether Yik Yak is used for jokes or alerts, it is a growing app amongst college students across the country, and it has the capabilities to stay. The company has officially secured $1.5 million in funding that the creators hope to use to make the app more news centered.

Magic on Friday TEREASA HATTEN Staff Writer The Dork Den is a venue that offers customers several geeky pastimes, such as board games and Magic: the Gathering. And with a wide expanse of cards both old and new, the Dork Den is a veritable haven for fans of Magic: the Gathering, and can be found in old Mankato. Every week, the Den hosts Friday Night Magic (FNM), a tournament sanctioned by the publishers of Magic, Wizards of the Coast. FNM tournaments use the standard deck format–60 card decks with the option of a 15 card
sideboard. These tournaments usually have at least 3 rounds of play. The actual amount depends on the number of players in attendance – the more players, the more rounds; and there must be a minimum of 8 for a tournament to even take place. The original matchups are randomized, but the rest are based on each player’s score which is calculated based on the number of games and/or matches they have won and lost. The prizes vary based on venue of play, as well as the store owner’s preference. Most winners do receive a number of booster packs – 15 card packets that house at least one rare card.

Timelines, tanks and terror Gritty war film takes a new direction as Fury hits theaters. SHAWN CLOSE Staff Writer For the majority of its run time, Fury does everything it can to convince you of two things: that war is a dirty, ugly thing that makes people do dirty, ugly things and that tanks are awesome, unstoppable death machines. Fury does both of these things extremely well with memorable, well-acted, dramatic scenes and tension filled, edge of your seat tank battles. But whether or not all these great scenes make a great movie is another story. Fury takes place during the last month of World War II, as the allies make their final push through Germany to break up the last bit of scattered Nazi resistance. The movie centers on the titular tank Fury and it’s crew, lead by Don ‘Wardaddy’ Collier (Brad Pitt), over the course of a day as they slog through the muddy countryside of Germany. The crew of the Fury has been together since the Normandy invasion, and has just lost one of their crewmembers as the movie starts; this man is hastily replaced by a young re-
shockya.com
cruit with no combat training or experience and the Fury is sent to spearhead a march through the enemy’s country side. Fury is a movie full of great scenes that fit together rather poorly in a one-day timeline that makes a lot of the scenes seem forced or nonsensical. For example, the new recruit starts off as a clerk typist who’s never held a gun before goes from not wanting to fire his gun at all, to not wanting to shoot people, to mercy killings, to regular killings, to openly admitting that he enjoys killing; during this time he also has his first cigarette, first shot
of alcohol, first sexual encounter, falls in love for the first time and loses that love tragically. By the end of the movie, he’s firing off machine guns with pinpoint accuracy and staring down entire armies without blinking an eye—kid’s had a very eventful day. Fury is full of beautiful shots of ugly, repulsive things; the movie doesn’t shy away from gore, with bodies exploding and heads ripped opened with frequent, some may say excessive, regularity. Everything in Fury is covered in mud or blood or both to the point where you stop see-
ing things as dirty and just accept it as the norm. The ugliness doesn’t end with the motif; the actions performed by the soldiers are just as unsavory as the gore that covers them, killing graphically and frequently, as well as performing other unsavory actions. Deaths in Fury are not of the simple ‘get shot fall over’ variety. During the first half of the movie, a man who gets lit on fire shoots himself in the head to spare himself the agony of burning to death. In most movies, this would be a standout death scene, in Fury, it’s one of many, many gruesome deaths
that sort of blend together into one gore-based smoothie. People with weak stomachs should avoid this movie. Fury is a good war movie that had a chance to be something great. Its entirely unglamorous treatment of the most overly glamorized war in American history is refreshing, especially since I was expecting another generic war movie. The movie is full of excellent camera work and great acting, heck even Shia LaBeouf and his stooped goatee managed to have a significant amount of screen time without me wanting to punch him in the face. The tank-heavy action scenes are great, but the two plus hour run time and large (sometimes 20 minute) stretches of inactivity makes it hard to recommend as a fun action flick. The weird flow between scenes and odd character development make it hard to recommend as a thriller/war drama. In the end Fury is a movie that has all the pieces to the great movie puzzle but wasn’t put together.

Holiday game preview
Load up your wishlists, the holiday games have been announced. MATTHEW EBERLINE Staff Writer While the last few months have been relatively bereft of new games (with the notable exception of Destiny), November is nearly upon us now, which means we finally get to see a number of new releases just in time for the holiday season. Here’s a look at some of the titles we can expect to see in the coming weeks: October 24 – Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth (PC) Ok, so it’s not exactly coming out in November, but the newest installment of Firaxis’ Civilization series is set to release in just a day. A spiritual successor to the 1999 hit Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri, Civilization: Beyond Earth breaks away from the historical Civilization formula
and takes players into the future as the leader and founder of Earth’s first ever space colony. To start off, players will choose from eight different organizations, each with its own leader and gameplay benefits, who will sponsor and shape the future
and cultural identity of your fledgling settlement. Beyond Earth’s new progression system is perhaps its biggest deviation from the traditional Civilization gameplay. Gone are the days of
the linear technology tree present in previous titles, replaced by
Beyond Earth’s new technology web, allowing players more freedom to choose the order in which they research technologies for the future of their colony. Civilization: Beyond Earth will release tomorrow (Friday, October 24) for Microsoft Windows. October 28 – Sunset Overdrive (Xbox One) Yes, I know, this one is also releasing in October instead of November, but Sunset Overdrive
may be the Xbox One’s biggest exclusive since the release of Titanfall. Set in a crazy and humorous open-world metropolis populated by mutants, players take control of an employee of the fictional FizzCo corporation, tasked with fighting mutants and cleaning up the city. Spicing up the traditional third-person shooter perspective, players

will use a number of fast-paced transportation methods to navi-
gate the city, including zip-lines, grind rails, and wall-running, among others. Sunset Overdrive is set to release next week on Tuesday, October 28 for the Xbox One. November 4 – Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC) Like its numerous predecessors, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is a first-person shooter focusing on the franchise’s trademark gunplay and multiplayer experience, albeit in a futuristic sci-fi setting this time around. Players assume control of former U.S. Marine, Jack Mitchell, now working with the private military company Atlas, against a ruthless terrorist organization known as the KVA.

continued from 11 Advanced Warfare’s gameplay remains mostly similar to previous titles in the series, however, one noticeable difference is the removal of the traditional heads-up display, which displays vital information such as remaining ammo and grenades. Instead, players will find this information displayed as a neat holographic projection emanating from whichever weapon they happen to have equipped. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will release on November 4 for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. November 11 – Assassin’s Creed: Unity (PS4, Xbox One, PC) & Assassin’s Creed: Rogue (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) Yes, you read that right. Two new titles in the Assassin’s Creed franchise are releasing on the same day. To begin with, Assassin’s Creed: Unity marks the series’ debut on next-generation consoles, taking place in Paris during the onset of the French Revolution. Aside from the improved graphics, Unity also introduces a cooperative multiplayer (co-op) mode, allowing up to four players to participate in narrative-driven missions as well as explore the open-world setting. Co-op mode can be engaged by entering taverns, which act as social hubs where players can see which of their friends are currently online and playing the game. Releasing on last-generation
consoles, Assassin’s Creed: Rogue takes a different approach than that of Unity, featuring gameplay closer to that of the recent Black Flag installment. Set in the mideighteenth century, players will find themselves in the north Atlantic aboard the Morrigan, a ship equipped with a shallower draft than Black Flag’s ship, the Jackdaw, allowing for river travel this time around. Both Assassin’s Creed games are set to release on November 11, with Unity emerging for the PS4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows, while Rogue will release for the PS3 and Xbox 360, with a Microsoft Windows version set for 2015. November 11 – Halo: The Master Chief Collection (Xbox One) With Halo 5: Guardians gearing up for release sometime next year, Microsoft seems keen on getting gamers back into the Halo spirit by releasing Halo: The Master Chief Collection, an updated collection of all the series’ games featuring the legendary Master Chief. While each game in the collection features enhanced graphics, it’s especially notable for featuring the first ever high-definition overhaul of the classic Halo 2 experience. Expect Halo: The Master Chief Collection to ship on November 11, exclusively for the Xbox One. November 18 – Dragon Age: Inquisition (PS4, Xbox One,

PS3, Xbox 360, PC) Fans of the Dragon Age series, rejoice, for the third installment in BioWare’s megapopular franchise is finally headed for your living room (or office). Dragon Age: Inquisition seeks to improve upon the areas that made the second game a bit of a disappointment, with a revamped combat system and overhauled romance aspect. The game also features a more open-world setting without reusing environments, a trait that irked many who played the series’ second installment. Combat in Inquisition will be possible with two different combat systems mirroring Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II, respectively. Dragon Age: Inquisition will release on November 18 for the PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. November 18 – Far Cry 4 (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC) Following the success of 2012’s Far Cry 3, Far Cry 4 aims to once again set players in an exotic locale controlled by an army of ruthless enemies. Set in a fictional, isolated country in the Himalayas called Kyrat, players must fight against the forces of the maniacal dictator, Pagan Min, in an effort to liberate the country from his oppressive rule. Ubisoft hopes to create a seamless experience between gameplay and narrative in this iteration,
something that felt a bit rough in the third installment and often detracted from the game’s more immersive elements. Far Cry 4 is set to hit store shelves on November 18 for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. November 18 – Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One) Fans of Rockstar’s hit Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) should be pleased to learn that the developers are hard at work revamping the game for its next-generation debut. The new Grand Theft Auto V will feature new weapons, vehicles, and activities, as well as a plethora of technical enhancements not possible on the older console generation, including additional wildlife, denser traffic, enhanced damage and weather effects, and a new foliage system. The game will also feature over one-hundred new songs across the seventeen different radio stations. Existing GTA V players will be able to transfer their GTA Online characters to either of the new versions and players who pre-order the new game will receive $1,000,000 in-game to spend across their single-player and multiplayer characters ($500,000 for each mode). The new Grand Theft Auto V will release on November 18 for PS4 and Xbox One, with a Microsoft Windows version still in the works. Expect that version to release on January 27, 2015.
CONSIDINE 3x6
November 21 – Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Nintendo Wii U) Anyone who plays Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. series regularly ought to be excited for this one. While the Nintendo 3DS version of the game released earlier this month, fans without a 3DS have been forced to wait weeks for what may be the most anticipated Wii U game since the console’s debut almost two years ago. New to the series is the ability to create custom Mii fighters, as well as the addition of Nintendo’s new Amiibo figurines, which grant the player additional skills and abilities when placed on the Wii U’s GamePad controller. Players who own both the 3DS and Wii U versions will be able to transfer their custom Mii characters between the two games. Both games also support local and online multiplayer. Expect Super Smash Bros. for Wii U to release on November 21 for, as the title suggests, the Nintendo Wii U. While November seems packed with goodies for the holiday season, expect another drought in the coming months, at least until spring of 2015. With yet another long wait in store, hopefully the upcoming titles will offer enough entertainment to hold gamers’ interest until then.

CHELSEY DIVELY Staff Writer It’s that time of year again, the season of pumpkin spice and everything ice as we watch the trees change color and fall off in a week’s time and prepare for another snowy winter; but we still have a few days (maybe even weeks) of beautiful weather to explore all the cliché niches of fall—the good, the bad, the Uggly. Weather Don’t be fooled by the gorgeous weather we’re having, start practicing your slow turns and driving like an old lady because unless you move beyond its reach, you’ll have to survive another long winter and remember the days when snow meant sledding and not ice-ridden roads. Minnesota has beautiful but brief autumn seasons, which means everyone is discussing the weather and hoping for a few more summerlike days. In October, the winds pick up, scarves get pulled out, and everyone locates their electric blanket.
Here’s a little hint, try putting your electric blanket over your bed for about 15 minutes before sleeping to make it nice and cozy; unlike snuggling, there will be no arguments over how much of the bed is too much of the bed. Trends Break out the boots and scarves, it’s finally cold enough for your leather jackets but you’ll have to wait a little longer in the parka department. Do leggings make good pants? Are Uggs a sin or lifesavers? As long as you’re comfortable, layer up and enjoy the chilly days ahead. Apple Orchards Whether you go for the corn mazes, petting zoos, or delicious treats, this tradition is still going strong. In the autumn months, crowds head outside the concrete jungle for an afternoon of apple picking and enjoying the outdoors. In Bayfield, WI there’s a celebration where a town’s population of 500 jumps to the thousands and everyone comes to buy a bag of apples, visit the street vendors for plenty
of apple-related food, and enjoy music and games. During this festival, residents board up their houses, hide from tourists, and spray holy water on those that try and park in their driveway (kidding); but not everyone is so opposed to the event as the younger generations go out and interact in the overcrowded streets Granted, apples are delicious and the local jewelry and cuisine is amazing, but the trick is to visit the week before for smaller Applefest crowds and better selection from vendors. Howsers is a gorgeous orchard overlooking a huge valley is filled to the brim with fall colors and hosts an old stone barn converted into a store. It’s the most gorgeous orchard around— many locals hold their weddings at this orchard. For the best foodie experiences, Blue Vista Orchard has something even better than a view—free samples of wine, apples, apple butter, jam, mustards, salsas, caramel sauce; the list is endless and wonderful because nobody should ever turn

Everyone’s invited Local country artist plays at the Verizon Wireless Center JENNA VAGLE Staff Writer Country heartthrob Jake Owen took the stage Friday at the Verizon Wireless Center. Mankato was one of the last stops on his Days of Gold Tour and fans weren’t disappointed. Minnesota State University, Mankato alumni Kelsi Magers attended the soldout show. She said it was definitely one of the best shows she’s ever been to. “He did a great job keeping the crowd engaged. A few fans got to go up on stage and have a dance off. I’m pretty sure they got to stay on stage the rest of the concert behind a tiki bar and have free drinks,” Magers said about the show. According to verizonwirelesscentermn.com, Owen said: “I love throwing parties! This tour is one big party and everyone is invited.”
This is no secrete to the country music community. Country Weekly has exclaimed, “Ain’t no party like a Jake Owen Party!” Eli Young Band and The Cadillac Three opened the show for Owen. The Eli Young Band has hits such as “Dust” and “Unchanged,” which is on the soundtrack for the feature film “The Best of Me.” Owen doesn’t stick to his No. 1 hit singles including “Beachin’” and “Days of Gold,” He also covers artists from a Variety of genres. Magers said at the October 17th show, he “incorporated other artists in with the concert by singing songs from Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks and Lil Jon.” Born and raised in Vero Beach, Fla., Owen grew up on surf and sun. He attended Florida State but dropped out right before graduation according to his website, jakeowen.net. It
wasn’t hard for Owen to make his mark in Nashville. He went from playing shows at bars in Florida to having a record deal within months. In 2009, he won the Academy of Country Music Award for New Male Vocalist of the year and has toured with country artists including Brad Paisley, Sugarland, Little Big Town and Keith Urban. Jake Owen is one of the hottest stars in Nashville, and he’s not just an amazing artist. He also established The Jake Owen Foundation in 2010. Their focus is assisting youth in Indian River County. He’s also reached out to children battling cancer and other diseases. Proceeds from his last show on Saturday in Vero Beach on will go towards his charity.

Pumpkin Spice Everything I can only take so many pumpkin spice flavored lattes; to be honest, I don’t even know what goes into making “pumpkin spice,” but I do know you can only find it during a short period in the year before it disappears behind a wall of mintflavored treats. Along with many hilarious hoax products for Four Loko and pumpkin spice flavored condoms, the craze is fed by many real products including Oreos, yogurt, chips, Pop-Tarts, gum, noodles, e-cigarettes, wines and
liquors. If you’re burnt out and want to try a different fall-flavored drink, I would recommend a chider—spicy chai tea with apple cider. Another option that recently started appearing on shelves is eggnog; can you guess what extra flavor they come in? Pumpkin spice may be everywhere now, but it will only last for a few weeks, so enjoy while it lasts.

Mavericks split second WCHA series DEREK LAMBERT Staff Writer Another non-conference series, another split for the Minnesota State University, Mankato men’s hockey team. The Mavericks headed north to Duluth for Friday night’s matchup against the University of Minnesota-Duluth that saw a scary comeback capped by an-overtime win. Freshman forward C.J. Franklin got things rolling for the Mavericks in the first period Friday night when Matt Leitner found him in the slot and Franklin fired home a one-timer past UMD goaltender Matt McNeely. Later in the first, Jordan Nelson extended the Maverick lead to two when he turned around and fired a low shot that fooled McNeely and found its way to the back of the net. After Bulldog forward Kyle Osterberg took a major penalty for checking from behind in the second period, the Mavs were granted a five-minute power play. Though UMD forward Dom Toninato scored a short-handed goal to cut the lead in half, the Mavericks made the most of their lengthy power play by scoring two of their own. Junior center Teddy Blueger scored a similar goal to Nelson’s when he took a behind the back shot that trickled through McNeely’s legs, then J.P. LaFon-
taine found Brad McClure alone in front and McClure went upstairs over the glove of McNeely for his third tally of the season. With a 4-1 lead, the Mavericks seemed poised to cruise to an effortless victory in this one. But the Bulldogs were scratching at the door all night. Adding a power play goal of their own, Carson Soucy put UMD back in the game when he snuck one past MSU goaltender Stephon Williams before Bulldog captain Adam Krause sniped the top corner past Williams to end the second period only down 4-3. The third period only saw one goal, and it was a big one. Late in the third, UMD’s Tony Cameranesi took a shot from the boards that got redirected twice before reaching the net, leaving Williams with no chance of making the stop. Freshman Karson Kuhlman would be credited with the goal, the first of his career at UMD. As the teams headed to overtime, Krause took an untimely penalty that put MSU on the power play. After senior Zach Palmquist fired a shot on goal from the point, freshman Zeb Knutson pushed a rebound past McNeely for the overtime victory and his first goal in a Mavericks sweater. Saturday night’s home opener in Mankato saw the first ever

onship. After the banner raising, this game was mostly all Bulldogs. Dylan Margonari opened up the scoring early when he stuffed in a loose puck in the crease, putting the Mavs up 1-0 on home ice. Then in the second period, Osterberg went top shelf on MSU goaltender Cole Huggins to tie the game. Soucy scored his second goal in as many nights to put the Bulldogs up 2-1, before the Mavs came back on a Brett Stern shot right off an offensive zone face off that Chase Grant deflected into the UMD goal. With the score tied at two after two periods, it seemed like the third period would be a tight one, but that wasn’t the case in this game. Toninato recorded another short-handed goal on the weekend when he put the Bulldogs up 3-2 on an absolute ripper of a shot that found the top corner past Huggins. Special teams would come in handy again for UMD when freshman Jared Thomas was found all alone on the top of the goal crease and tapped in a power play goal to extend the lead to 4-2.
In an effort to get back in the game, Maverick head coach Mike Hastings pulled Huggins in favor of an extra attacker up front, but it backfired. Thomas struck again with an empty net goal to all but seal the game for the Bulldogs. After UMD took a late penalty, Cameranesi tallied another empty net goal while short handed to clinch the series split with a 6-2 win. “The first two periods were a wash,” said Hastings. “Not a great reaction from us coming out in the third.” While a loss at home where the Mavs were 16-0-1 last season may have put a damper on the weekend, a 2-2 record heading into conference play isn’t a bad way to start the season. The Mavericks will have to go to work on their power play, though, as they were scoreless on six power plays on Saturday night. “Special teams win and lose hockey games,” said Hastings. “I think this game showed that.” The Mavericks slipped one spot to no. 13 in the NCAA, but a split against a team ranked

2014-2015 NBA season preview It was a crazy offseason, and writer Luke Lonien thinks the season is going to be just as crazy. LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer A new NBA season is upon us, and with many new faces in new places, and old faces in old places, it should be an exciting season in the NBA. The biggest news of the offseason had to be that LeBron James is “coming home” LeBron opted to take his talents back to Northern Ohio, and brought a load of talent with him. Enter the Kevin Love saga, the Timberwolves made the blockbuster trade of the summer, sending Love to Cleveland for the no. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft Andrew Wiggins. The three-team trade also sent Anthony Bennett and Thaddeus Young to the Timberwolves. With Cleveland now having Kyrie Irving, LeBron James and Kevin Love, look for the Cavaliers to win the East, and possibly bring a Championship to Cleveland. Starting off in the Western Conference, some teams that are possible contenders are the Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers and the defending champions San Antonio Spurs. Kevin Durant is out with an early foot injury, but that should not stop a very talented Thunder team. Durant and Russell Westbrook is a combo that will be very hard for opposing teams to stop. The explosiveness of Westbrook combined with the shooting talent of reigning MVP Kevin Durant and the interior defense of Serge Ibaka, expect the Thunder to come out of the Western Conference. The Clippers are a very interesting team to watch this coming season. Starting their second season under head coach Doc Rivers, expect the Clippers to explode on the scene. Chris Paul is arguably the best Point Guard in the NBA, and match that with the talented-big men Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan should make for a good combo. Com-
bine that with the outside shooting of J.J. Redick, the Clippers have a good shot at contending this season. If either the Clippers or Thunder want to make it to the NBA finals this season, they will have to get through the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs were the best team in the league last season, with the big three of the ageless wonder, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. The Spurs also have a lot of young talent in Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard, and 1st round pick Kyle Anderson. I know that every year is the Spurs last year. People have been saying that since their sweep of the Cavs, but expect the Spurs to have another successful year. My sleeper team in the West this season is the New Orleans Pelicans. Anthony Davis is a superstar in the making, followed by Jrue Holiday, Eric Gordon and Tyreke Evans. The Pelicans have a good core to make some noise is the very competitive West. I expect the West to finish out like this; 1. Oklahoma City Thunder 2. San Antonio Spurs 3. Los Angeles Clippers 4. Portland Trail Blazers 5. Golden State Warriors 6. New Orleans Pelicans 7. Dallas Mavericks 8. Memphis Grizzles My bold prediction in the West is that the Houston Rockets will not make the playoffs. Outside of Dwight Howard and James Harden, the Rockets do not have much. After missing out on Carmelo Anthony and then missing out on Chris Bosh, the Rockets had to scramble and got Trevor Ariza. He is great wing defender, but not exactly what the Rockets need after losing Chandler Parsons. Any of the top eight teams in the west are capable of winning an NBA title, but expect the Thunder to make the push to get

back to the NBA Finals. Moving on to the interesting Eastern Conference, it seems to be wide open, but in reality it is not. The Cavaliers, Bulls and Heat are the only contenders for the title in the East. Even after losing Lebron James, the Heat are in good position in the East. Chris Bosh will take over the role of scoring for the Heat, and we will see a decreased role for Dwayne Wade. They have a couple of great additions including Josh McRoberts, Danny Granger and Loul Deng. The Heat will contend in the
East, don’t count them out just because they loss the king. The Bulls are the best team in the NBA in my opinion at the moment. I know the Cavs have all of the star power, but nobody is as deep as the Bulls. Derrick Rose is back in action, and the once MVP looks to get back into form. They also have the Defensive Player of the year in Joakim Noah. With the additions of Doug McDermott, Nikola Mirotic and Pau Gasol, the Bulls will be the team to beat in the Eastern Conference. Now the Cleveland Cavaliers
will start out slow, getting accustomed to each other playing style, but when this team gets it rolling look out. You can never count out the best player in the World in LeBron James. He is as talented as they come and his supporting cast might be even better in Cleveland than in Miami. Kyrie Irving is a special point guard who can shoot from anywhere on the court. Kevin Love will have to learn how to play as the third best player on the team, instead

Should student athletes earn money from their sucess? DENZELL CASTRO-OATS Staff Writer Time and time again we hear about the news of student athletes taking advantage of their accomplishments by earning money on the side. In the light of the NCAA, these actions are deemed immoral and against guidelines. But there is definitely something worth debating over in this matter. Is it really all that bad to allow these athletes who have done so much for their program and university to receive money off their fame? After all, they deserve something don’t they? Some may believe a free education may be enough, but others would argue that although an accomplished, scholarshipped athlete may be receiving a “free education”, they often times don’t have time to earn money of their own which resorts to these actions the NCAA frowns upon. These actions include receiving any kind of financial reward or gift for something they otherwise didn’t earn or consequently worked for.
Do you remember Terelle Pryor? He was considered to be one of the top football recruits in the class of 2008 out of high school. He ranked no. 4 in the ESPNU 150 rankings and was the number one quarterback in the nation at the time. Throughout his high school career, Pryor received numerous scholarship offers, but ultimately chose to be an Ohio State Buckeye. Throughout his time at Ohio State he became a very accomplished quarterback for the Buckeyes, earning them a few notable Big Ten awards along with a Rose Bowl MVP and a couple Big 10 Conference MVP awards. But it’s what Pryor did off the field is what caused so much eyes to attend his way. Upon the start of Pryor’s junior year he was suspended for the first five games by the NCAA for selling his championship ring, jerseys and other awards he had earned in return for tattoos and cars. One can’t deny that this has concerns for the NCAA all over it. According to the NCAA, the selling of memorabilia in return

for benefits (cash, prizes, awards, etc.) is not permitted. But is it not rightfully his to sell and do as he pleases with it? On the other hand we factor in morals. The NCAA has always stood on the ground of practicing proper morals and hopes to do so by implementing guidelines for student athletes, so that they may share these same morals as well. Sometimes it is arguable that these morals and guidelines tap into rights that athletes, otherwise, think should be acceptable or allowed. One could say, “These athletes bring in so much revenue for their school, they deserve to reap the benefits of these attributes in return.” After all they did earn it didn’t they? We can look at a more recent story, like Mr. Johnny Football himself. It was reported that he received payments for his autograph back in 2013 which violates NCAA bylaw. Although they couldn’t prove he was actually paid for his autograph, they

NBA PREVIEW “A new NBA season is upon us, and with many new faces in new places and old faces in old places, it should be an exciting season in the NBA.” continued from 16 of the best. It will be a learning curve or Love, who like Bosh is making the transition from best player to third, will fit in just fine. In fact, this situation might be better for Love, who will not have to be the go to player anymore. My sleeper team in the East is the Charlotte Hornets. Al Jefferson is a big time player and he has a solid core around him. Kemba Walker, Lance Stephenson and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist look to balance out the work for the Hornets. Expect the Hornets to be even better than last year, as they make their push in the Eastern Conference. I expect the East to shake out like this; 1. Chicago Bulls 2. Cleveland Cavaliers 3. Miami Heat 4. Brooklyn Nets 5. Charlotte Hornets 6. Washington Wizards 7. Toronto Raptors 8. Atlanta Hawks
The most disappointing team in the East will be the Indiana Pacers. The loss of Lance Stephenson hurt badly enough, but now Superstar Paul George is out for an extended period of time. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Pacers made the playoffs in the weak East, but I don’t expect it. The Pacers’ window of opportunity is closing, and will have to find a replacement for Stephenson soon. Postseason is all that matters, and I believe that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win the NBA championship over the Oklahoma City Thunder in 6 games. LeBron will finally bring a championship to Cleveland. The NBA had an entertaining offseason, and I believe the regular season and post season will be just as entertaining for NBA fans.

2014-2015 Fantasy Basketball Preview 4.3 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 1.6 steals a game last year, while shooting 47.1 percent from the floor. He should easily be considered as a top-5 value this season. Chris Paul has continued to put up stats in his career, and should continue to do the same this season. The only reason I have him ranked higher than Russell Westbrook is the fact Paul never changes his game no matter who is or isn’t on the court. Durant will be out for the first few weeks of the season, where Westbrook will take over. As soon as KD returns though, Russell will lose scoring chances. Paul is a safer bet for the long haul, but you can’t go wrong with either. John Wall and Damian Lillard are interesting individuals who are now exploding onto the scene. Wall now has a barrage of shooters on Washington that he no longer has to rely on himself for the scoring. Lillard is getting better as it looks so far, as this will be his third season. He hasn’t missed a game in his career yet and plays at a consistent pace. TOP 5SHOOTING GUARDS 1. JAMES HARDEN, ROCKETS 2. STEPHEN CURRY, WARRIORS 3. KOBE BRYANT, LAKERS 4. NICOLAS BATUM, TRAILBLAZERS 5. KYRIE IRVING, CAVALIERS The greatest thing to appreciate about most fantasy leagues
TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer This 2014-2015 NBA season has many interesting story lines to it. The NBA offseason has seen a gruesome Paul George injury which will result the surging star in missing the entire season, and Derrick Rose has shown glimpses and flashes of his old self. The underlying question with the Chicago point guard is: will he stay on the court? Lebron James has returned to Cleveland, this time forming the new big three that includes Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving. Kobe Bryant will be making his return, but will age catch up to Black Mamba? Will Kevin Durant come back from injury the MVP he was last year? Does staying with the New York Knicks benefit Carmelo Anthony? Here are the rankings by position that you should consider for this season’s fantasy draft. TOP 5 POINT GUARDS 1. STEPHEN CURRY, WARRIORS 2. CHRIS PAUL, CLIPPERS 3. RUSSELL WESTBROOK, THUNDER 4. JOHN WALL, WIZARDS 5. DAMIAN LILLARD, TRAILBLAZERS In overall player rating last season, Stephen Curry was rated second behind MVP Kevin Durant. Curry averaged 24 points,
is having dual eligibility for both point guards and shooting guards. The two-guard spot is not a very deep group. James Harden is easily the most elite of this group, so getting him in your draft would create space from everyone else’s shooting guard. Offensively, the guy is a
stud. Kobe Bryant will be a mystery most of this season, as he missed most of last season with injuries. However, he will not be letting others take his team away from him, so expect a lot of production if he stays on the court. Not counting last year, Bryant has averaged at least 24 points a
game for 13 years in a row. Nicolas Batum should be considered as one of the more well-rounded players in the game. He can do all the little things for you, which results in good fantasy points.

NBA FANTASY “Other than the point guard position, power forward offers a great amount of depth this season.” continued from 18 Kyrie Irving is a another guy to consider having at that position, as he will still put up good fantasy numbers with Lebron James and Kevin Love. The points scored per game may drop, but expect everything else to stay at the consistent pace it is at. TOP 5 SMALL FORWARDS 1. LEBRON JAMES, CAVALIERS 2. CARMELO ANTHONY, KNICKS 3. KEVIN DURANT, THUNDER 4. KAWHI LEONARD, SPURS 5. RUDY GAY, KINGS LeBron James is undoubtedly the best player in the world right now, so if you somehow land him on your team you should consider yourself to have had the first overall pick, or just flat out lucky. James’ days as the fantasy dominator may be questioned with a couple of young stars on his side in Cleveland now, and the fact he’ll be turning 30. Still, he is the best and you cannot pass on him. However, there is a beast on the east coast that has not shown any inconsistency. Carmelo Anthony has been an offensive maniac on a team that lacks consistent offense from everywhere else. He has slimmed down this offseason and will be involved in the scoring title run yet again. Even though Kevin Durant will be out with injury the first month or so of the season, there is no reason to let him slip by if he is still
available. When last year’s MVP returns, there should not be any worry about him not being who he was. Durant is still a scoring title winner, and he will come back strong. An aging team down in San Antonio can only mean one thing for the young, budding superstar Kawhi Leonard- more upside and a guaranteed breakout season. The Finals MVP rocketed to a fast start in the second half of the season, and furthermore made himself better in the playoffs and finals. This year he should get more minutes, which result in more points in fantasy. Rudy Gay averaged a 20/6/3 line last season after getting traded to Sacramento last season, and he should have the same kind of year this season. There isn’t much of an offensive battle for who gets their ball in their hands, especially from the perimeter. Gay will have his chances yet again to bolster some fantasy teams with his offensive play. TOP 5 POWER FORWARDS 1. BLAKE GRIFFIN, CLIPPERS 2. ANTHONY DAVIS, PELICANS 3. SERGE IBAKA, THUNDER 4. LAMARCUS ALDRIDGE, TRAILBLAZERS 5. KEVIN LOVE, CAVALIERS Other than the point guard position, power forward offers a great amount of depth this season. Blake Griffin has always been a dominate offensive threat
through his career, but his improvement in free throw shooting and mid-range shooting will further make him more lethal with the ball. Shooting 52.8 percent from the floor while averaging almost double-double numbers can help your team go a long way. Anthony Davis is continuing to flourish as a superstar. Last year, Davis averaged 20.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 2.8 blocks while having a 51.9 percent shooting percentage. Last year was scary good for his second year. His third should only get better. Not only will Westbrook and Serge Ibaka be taking over the workload for Oklahoma City in Durant’s absence, but Ibaka will be getting more chances this season in general. Ibaka has increased his numbers now through two seasons. He has developed all skills, including getting better on the offensive side of the ball. LaMarcus Aldridge has always been a force for the Portland Trailblazers. There is just the need of keeping him on the court. He averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds last year, so he is definitely a guy to give you results every night. If you want a safe approach in this position, Aldridge is your guy. Even with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving on your team, Kevin Love is still a huge offensive force in the league. The man has averaged a double-double over his career, but overall his numbers shouldn’t be terrible. He will make an impact no matter what team drafts him.

TOP 5 CENTERS 1. ANTHONY DAVIS, PELICANS 2. DEMARCUS COUSINS, KINGS 3. AL JEFFERSON, HORNETS 4. CHRIS BOSH, HEAT 5. JOAKIM NOAH, BULLS DeMarcus Cousins finally had it put all together in his fourth season, as he averaged a 23/12 mark with almost two steals a game. He will be most of the Kings offense this season, as hopefully he can handle things within his career maturely as well. Ever since Al Jefferson entered the league, he has shown great dominance in the paint. As long as the big man can stay healthy, the Hornets can expect Jefferson to give
them double-double nights consistently. With LeBron James departing for his home state, it’s up to Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh to take over the reins for the Miami Heat. Bosh should have this be more of an upside, as he was always a third wheel to Wade and LeBron. Having James play on the same team as Bosh has limited the once superstar. Bosh once did average 20 ppg, and he just might be able to now. Joakim Noah not only established himself as a defensive force by winning the defensive player of the year last year, but he was getting MVP votes as well. Noah has made his game very versatile, as he almost averaged a triple double last season. Even with Pau Gasol and the return of Derrick Rose, Noah should still find a way to get his and contribute to a nice fantasy year.
MEN’S HOCKEY “Special teams win and lose hockey games,” said Hastings. “I think this game showed that. continued from 15
among the top 20 doesn’t necessarily hurt their season. “These weekends are big for the pair-wise rankings,” said senior captain Brett Stern. “They help us get into the NCAA tournament.” MSU hits the ice again this weekend in their first conference series of the season when Alabama-Huntsville comes to town. The puck drops in downtown Mankato at 7:07 p.m. Friday and Saturday night.
STUDENT ATHLETES “After all, they deserve something don’t they?” continued from 17 could prove the fact that he had knowledge it would be sold to benefit him. There have been many reports and accusations last season’s Heisman trophy winner, Jameis Winston, signing autographs in exchange for payment. And he isn’t the only story. These kind of actions are seen all throughout the NCAA in a lot of sports. The frequency of these events breeds the thought of actually allowing it and just regulating it. These athletes bring a great deal of attention to their respected institutions they might as well get something in return from their fame.
