MARIA LY STAFF WRITER Latino affairs hosted its Dia De Los Muertos event at the Multicultural Center this past Wednesday in celebration of honoring passed loved ones. Dia De Los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, is a multi-day holiday from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 in honoring and remembrance of friends, loved ones, and family that have passed. Students, faculty members, and staff were welcome to bring keepsakes and pictures of their passed loved ones to put on the ofrenda, meaning offering in Spanish, which is an altar usually decorated to honor the dead. The ofrenda used in the event was colorful and beautifully decorated in Dia De Los Muertos decorations such as skulls, mini piñatas,

Spanish marigolds, and pan de muertos- “bread of the dead.” Pan de muertos has a huge significance to the holiday. The bread is made in many shapes, and the shape used for this ofrenda was shaped as a circle with bones and a skull in the middle. The circle

signifies the circle of life, and the bones and skull represent the body. They also had a second bread of the dead shaped as a body. This is what the spirit eats. Usually on the ofrenda, most people will also set out the favorite foods of their honored deceased in addition to pan de muertos.

The Spanish marigold also holds lots of representation in Dia De Los Muertos. Families typically will line their homes with the flower as a way to

everyone is still invited to attend the performances in Ostrander.

Traditionally celebrated in Autumn, Diwali is a celebration that has been

practiced by followers of Hinduism for over 2,500 years. Diwali symbolizes the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance,” thus where the name “Festival of Lights” comes from. Diwali typically spans five days. The Student Association of India is a group whose mission is to promote culture and traditions of India at MNSU and in Mankato. Some other events they host around campus are screenings of Bollywood movies, free meditation classes, dance workshops, and in the past they have hosted World’s Got Talent festivities.

The past few months have been so exhilarating! MNSU turned 150, MSU football is 9-0, soccer is in the playoffs, my reporter, Emmauella is out of hospital and we have not even got snow yet! From Charlottesville to Pittsburgh to Kentucky, there has been an increase in deaths fueled by hatred with Gun Violence archive has tallied over 300 shootings across the country. The lives of wellmeaning citizens have been totally transformed as people do not know where to go to be safe even in a house of prayer. “Anti-Semitism is a plague to humanity,” said Sarah Sanders, Press Secretary to the White House, but I say love is a greater motivator. As America grieves for the lost lives of brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers across our nation. I call on church leaders all over to fight! Not a physical one but spiritual warfare. Given that a majority of churches were encouraged to vote our current president into office, I call on churches to act for our nation. With this in mind, I call for all churches to take a 3-day prayer and fasting for our nation. If you really want to make this nation great again, it is not just having thinktanks and/or waiting for politicians to act. Let us back up our acts of kindness which President Trump touts about to the world with prayer for the marginalized, lost, those hurting, our leaders. I am sure that God will answer because He says, if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, I will hear from heaven and heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14 paraphrased) On preparing this letter, I received this message from the Lord: I am moving you from the place of ordinary to the
