MNSU to hold second Women in STEM event

Students in STEM given the chance to network with faculty & industry members

MARIA LY STAFF WRITER Minnesota State University, Mankato will be having its second Women in STEM event this upcoming Friday with a networking dinner, in which students will be able to connect with faculty and industry members.

Hosted by the Minnesota State Engineering Center of Excellence and the MSUMankato Women’s Center and College of Science, Engineering and Technology, the event is free with registration.

Melissa Huppert, the STEM Outreach Director, states the purpose of the event is

to provide students in the field of STEM opportunities to network and build relationships that will help them in their professional lives. Huppert said, “The idea is to help build some different skill sets in the students here on campus so that they feel more prepared to enter the industry and that they already have some connections that they can rely on when they start their job search.”

The theme of this event is social media professionalism and will feature keynote speaker Tiffany Kuehl who will be talking about how to have a professional image online, and some tips and tricks concerning social media.

The event will also feature speed networking, where students will get to have a quick interview with faculty and industry members that they may find interesting or who have a career similar to

their interests. Following the speed networking, they will be able to meet informally and network as they like.

Runners break a sweat to win the Ugly Sweater 5K

The Student Events Team hosted an Ugly Sweater 5K on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 5 p.m.

The 5K took place on the Performing Arts Center Lawn of the Minnesota State University, Mankato campus, and featured a route around campus where runners wore ugly sweaters or purchased MNSU branded long sleeve t-shirts.

Minnesota State University, Mankato students were able to register for free online at www.mnsuevents. com to run the 5K. The cost for public to register was

only $10, or $15 on the day of the race.

A custom MNSU “ugly” long sleeve T-shirt was also available for purchase for $15, and will be as long as supplies last.

“I’m excited to see all the different ugly sweaters my friends wear. Plus, it’s a great time to burn off all those calories from Thanksgiving break,” said Kelli Sollin, Team Lead.

There was free pizza, s’mores, and hot chocolate for the participants of the race. There was also a raffle and games prior to and after the run. A 20-minute holiday light show also took place on the Performing Arts Center Lawn at the end of the run.

Student profile: Jolene Nelson KAITLYN JORGENSEN STAFF WRITER JOSHUA SCHUETZ STAFF WRITER The recent announcement

by General Motors of a restructuring plan that will lay off 14,000 American workers has roiled the media and provoked an angry reaction from President Donald Trump.

The president threatened to cut subsidies for the automotive company, noting that the U.S. government bailed General Motors out in 2008.

I would argue in favor of such a move, for two reasons.

First, there’s a moral argument to be made here: American taxpayers should not have to line the pockets of an automotive giant that slashes U.S. jobs in return.

The government already bailed them out; let us not do so again.

Second, government subsidies, especially to large businesses, tend to favor established organizations over startups and small businesses, which weakens competition and hurts both workers and consumers as a result.

It is to be noted that General Motors saved quite a bit of money from the Trump tax cut, which was mostly reinvested into stock buybacks for shareholders.

There are larger market forces at play here, of course, but that is not the point: the point is that American citizens have paid to give a large company bailouts, tax cuts, and subsidies.

And what does the taxpayer get in return? Why, 14,000 lost jobs, of course.

If corporations are to be people, as the Supreme Court has ruled, then they ought to be held to the same moral standards that human beings are.

With rights come responsibilities.

Jolene Nelson is a sophomore majoring in Health and Physical Education from Greenbush, Minnesota. If you have no idea where that is, that’s okay. Jolene stated, “It’s a super small town with a population 719, 20 minutes from the border of Canada.

Everyone is republican and white. You don’t want to live there if you’re a person of color.”

Jolene is involved in CLASA and Latino Wellness on campus and is passionate about being a very vocal democrat. She stated, “I am also very passionate about Planned Parenthood and making people understand the benefits of it, as well as take the time to educate themselves on why they need to get routine STI checks! I am also passionate about educating people on Native American heritages and customs. I grew up so close to reservations and many of my friends are Native American. I think it is important to educate people on what life looks like on reservations so they can fully understand the benefits instead of ignorantly assuming only negatives exist.”

is either working, sleeping, catching up on Gossip Girl or occasionally playing volleyball.

After college Jolene plans to do a year student teaching in Europe, Australia, or Spain and then, “Accept a job from whatever school hires me. I will go wherever life takes me to teach.”

Jolene found the adjustment to college in a big city challenging mostly due to, as she says, “the wet noodle smell in Mankato, and not having home

cooked meals anymore.”

Freshman year, Jolene stayed in the dorms in Crawford and Preska. She stated, “It was a great experience because you’re so close to everything on campus so it’s easier to get up and go to the library, Otto Rec or Chet’s. Also living in the residence communities is great, because you’re surrounded by a lot more people, which is nice if you’re a social person like me.”

Jolene has since moved

off campus and said, “All I really do is go to class, go to work, and go home. I don’t spend as much time doing a lot of the things I did freshman year anymore, but it’s super expensive living on campus and way cheaper living off campus.”

Before starting college, she wishes that someone had told her, “not to trust every friend you make. People are

Student Government announces accomplishments & goals

MARIA LY STAFF WRITER The Student Government this past Wednesday talked about current and future accomplishments, available resources, and current issues students face.

Senator Silwal announced that the Computer Science major will be returning in fall of 2019. She also discussed issues CSET students have been facing, such as the hassle of getting into computer labs.

Senator Mitchell re p re s e n t i n g the environmental committee announced MNSU’s carbon footprint has been reduced by 16 percent this year. The

university also won the 2018 Minnesota Clean Energy Community Award.

Residence Hall Association, President Andrew Trenne spoke about room and board rates and the changes students voted on in the recent RHA meeting. The biggest change being made is that Chet’s and Julia Sears Grill hours will be extended to close at 1 a.m. starting the fall of 2019.

Senator Redenius representing residential life, discussed having hall socials alongside floor socials to enhance community bonding and outreach which will be tested in the upcoming spring semester.

Among accomplishments, concerns about lack of awareness of certain resources was brought up. Senator Erickson talked about the lack of awareness of the Mav Textbook Reserve Program,

in which students can check out textbooks for their classes at the library. Bringing awareness to the program is currently being worked on as well as improving the system.

Senator Schmidt, representing Arts and Humanities, discussed the lack of awareness of students ability to put in maintenance requests to the front desk for out of tune pianos and is working to inform students.

Head coaches and players from the football team and the women’s soccer team came to the Student Government meeting and expressed their gratitude towards the senators for their work in advocating.

Announcements for events was also announced such as the Diversity Dinner on Friday, Nov. 30 in the CSU ballroom from 5-8 p.m.

Although we might not fully comprehend what sleep does to us, we know that if we go without sleep for too long it makes our body feel terrible. On the other hand, when we do get enough, our body feels recharged and ready to take on tasks of the day.

Studies conducted by scientists show the amount of sleep a person gets in a day plays a vital role in the immune functions of the body, as well as metabolism, memory, learning and other vital functions. These discoveries lead us to understanding some of the benefits of a sound sleep.

With the semester coming to an end, many students might believe this is the best time to skip sleep, and put in all efforts towards improving their grades.

However, chances are that not getting enough sleep might affect your ability to do better. So, if your plan is to get a better grade in a class that you’re

staying up all night for, it is important to get enough sleep while putting in the hard work.

Here are some reasons why a good night sleep is beneficial.

Inadequate sleep can affect social and emotional interactions: Sleep deprivation may reduce your social skills and ability to recognize people’s emotional expressions. It can also reduce your ability to interact socially.

With all these benefits of getting adequate sleep mentioned above, my advice to everyone would be to always get enough sleep to be productive.

It is also important to see a doctor if you find it difficult to sleep at night.

Climate change, depleted resources leave world hungry

BANGKOK (AP) — Feeding a hungry planet is growing increasingly difficult as climate change and depletion of land and other resources undermine food systems, the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization said Wednesday as it renewed appeals for better policies and technologies to reach “zero hunger.”

Population growth requires supplies of more nutritious food at affordable prices, but increasing farm output is hard given the “fragility of the natural resource base” since humans have outstripped Earth’s carrying capacity in terms of land, water and climate change, the report said.

About 820 million people are malnourished. The FAO and International Food Policy Research Institute released the report at the outset of a global conference aimed at speeding up efforts to

achieve zero hunger around the world.

“The call for action is very clear. It is possible in our lifetime and it is also realistic to end hunger and malnutrition,” Inonge Wina, vice president of Zambia, told the gathering.

Food security remains tenuous for many millions of people who lack access to affordable, adequately nourishing diets for a variety of reasons, the most common being poverty.

But it’s also endangered by civil strife and other conflicts.

In Yemen, where thousands of civilians have died in airstrikes

by a Saudi-led coalition, the aid group Save the Children says 85,000 children younger than 5 may have died of hunger or disease in the civil war.

In Afghanistan, severe drought and conflict have displaced more than 250,000 people, according to UNHCR, the U.N. refugee agency.

FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva noted that the number of hungry and malnourished people in the world has risen to levels last seen a decade ago.

“After decades of gains in fighting hunger, this is a serious setback and FAO and the

U.N. sister agencies, together with member governments and other partners, are all very concerned,” Graziano da Silva said in a videotaped address to the conference.

Hunger is still most severe in Africa, but the largest number of undernourished people live in the Asia-Pacific region, the report said. It said good public policies and technology are the keys to improving the situation.

The FAO estimates that global demand for food will jump by half from 2013 to 2050. Farmers can expand land use to help make up some of the difference, but

that option is constrained in places like Asia and the Pacific and urbanization is eating up still more land that once may have been used for agriculture.

Increasing farm output beyond sustainable levels can cause permanent damage to ecosystems, the report said, noting that it often causes soil erosion, pollution with plastic mulching, pesticides and fertilizers, and a loss of biodiversity.

China destroys 12 million tons of tainted grain each year, at a loss of nearly $2.6 billion, according to the report.

“Baby It’s Cold Outside” benefit concert warms Mankato community MARK REYNOLDS STAFF WRITER A benefit concert was held Wednesday, November 28 at Pub 500 by the Minnesota State University, Mankato concert production class from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

The students running the “Baby It’s Cold Outside” channeled the giving spirit of the holidays and wanted to support the local community for those who need extra help this time of year.

Alec Maertens, one of the performers and students coordinating the event, explained the charities.

“It’s a charity event with all the proceeds going to the ECHO Food Shelf and

the Salvation Army,” he said. “For the ECHO Food Shelf, the event is gathering non-perishable food items, and for the Salvation Army, we’re gathering winter clothing items. So, if you bring one of those items or a bag, you get ‘x’ amount of raffle tickets, and we’ve got a bunch of sweet, awesome prizes.”

The ECHO Food Shelf is a Mankato-based program that helps provide emergency food assistance to people in Blue Earth County and North Mankato. They also have a unique “Food Rescue” program, which has partnered with 11 companies to donate food that would have been wasted.

The Mankato Salvation Army provides many services including meal programs, affordable clothing and events to help the community.

we can be a part of is really good for us. For me, being born and raised here, anything I can do to give back

from what the community has given to me is awesome,” Maertens said.

Movie Review:”Nobody’s

Student Brandon Weideman said, “The holiday season is the perfect time to give back for so many people who need it. And that’s why we came up with the name “Baby It’s Cold Outside” because it’s so cold and we think food and clothing are definitely needs. So, we decided to have that be our drive for the event.”

The raffle items were generously donated from many local businesses including Barnes and Noble, the Coffee Hag, Rhapsody Music and Pub 500, which has been a long-time partner with the concert production class and donated many raffle items themselves as well as generously hosted their events for over six years.

In the end, the students put on a great, fun event that not only relieved some of that end-of-the-year stress but also help support the local community.

Fool”

New Tyler Perry movie is a fun, but sloppy rom-com RACHAEL JAEGER STAFF WRITER “Nobody’s Fool” concentrates on two sisters who have made different choices in their recent lives.

Danica (Tika Sumpter) and Tanya (Tiffany Haddish) stir tension, especially after their mom Lola (Whoopi Goldberg) asks Danica to take Tanya in. When Danica picks Tanya up, she is making love to a stranger who already has a wife but Tanya has been sexually frustrated after being in prison for five years.

Danica wakes up to emoji’s floating across her phone screen in her conversation with Charlie, her online boyfriend. In the voiceovers, they sweet talk each other but something does not feel completely right, especially when I learned that they haven’t met in person despite a year of being official.

Meanwhile Tiffany Haddish drenches the audience

more with her presence as Tanya in contrast to “Night School” where she was pushed into the background and was not given enough credit. In “Nobody’s Fool”, Haddish explodes with consistent and witty sexual innuendoes which define her character but to distract much of the focus.

Yet in “Nobody’s Fool”, I found it difficult to pinpoint what that focus was: whether it was about the relationship between the sisters and their adjustment to each other or if it was about Danica’s choosing between a fishy online relationship or a sweet coffee shop owner, or her career working for a high-end company that sells perfume.

As I glazed through other film reviews, the general consensus agreed with me: “Nobody’s Fool” has at least five plots crammed into its limited feature length requirement and many left the theater dissatisfied.

In my opinion, that is why

I like few romantic comedies since they center mostly around sex. I am not saying Hollywood should altogether avoid them but tone them down. While I watched Nobody’s Fool, I felt like the story should have centered more around Danica and her love interests, Charlie and Frank.

At the conclusion of the film, I still felt that more could have been flushed out with all three of those characters.

Ultimately, there are a few aspects I still appreciate about “Nobody’s Fool”. As overwhelming as Tanya is, I appreciate how she brings Danica down to earth. While Tanya has served five years in prison, she is not afraid to say what she thinks but it is as though Danica, who has built a life for herself, only wants to appear positive and successful. R.I.P. to Bikini Bottom creator - Stephen Hillenburg

Looking back at the best moments of Spongebob Opinion KOLBEY SPOMER STAFF WRITER As many of you already know, two days ago Stephen Hillenburg lost his battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease also known as ALS at the age of 57. Hillenburg lead an amazing life, such as marrying the love of his life at 37, raising a wonderful child, and most notably creating the mega hit cartoon Spongebob Squarepants. Spongebob first aired in 1999, and has since become one of the longest running cartoons ever.

The first three seasons are widely considered some of the best in animated television history, and even though the show slowly lost direction over the years, a combination of nostalgia and quality episodes have lead Spongebob to become as relevant as nearly any other pop culture icon. Right now, you could open up Instagram and I guarantee you could find a Spongebob meme in your discover page in about 10 seconds.

All of this is a reality because a marine biologist had an idea for a cartoon. In honor of Mr. Hillenburg and everything he has done for us, we here at the Reporter created a list of our top ten Spongebob episodes.

10. Club Spongebob Synopsis- Spongebob and Patrick start a club in their treehouse. Seeing this, Squidward mocks them, claiming he would never want to join them. They retort by saying he wouldn’t even fit in. Squidward be-

comes offended, and forces his way in to prove he can fit in. Turns out they meant it literally, as the treehouse is incredibly small. Spongebob, Patrick, and Squidward end up lost in a Kelp forest after a series of hilarious mistakes.

Luckily for Spongebob and Patrick, they brought along their Magic Conch shell, and as we all know the conch provides. They follow the toy’s directions to a fault, and this causes Squidward to look for other ways out of the forest.

Best Moment- The Ending.

After the group is seemingly saved from the forest by a park ranger, it is revealed he is a follower of the conch as well. When the conch declares the next move, they should make be “nothing”, Squidward finally breaks mentally and joins the others in a circle around the conch.

9. Something Smells Synopsis- Spongebob opens the episode by making literally the most disgusting ice cream sundae you will ever see. After eating the monstrosity, he goes out for the day, but he notices a weird phenomenon occurring. Nobody wants anything to do with him.

As audience members, we know it’s because his breath is so smelly, but he doesn’t, and it leads to some good hearty belly laughs.

Best Moment-The Ugly Barnacle. Patrick’s story of the ugly barnacle is so aggressively depressing that it needs to be mentioned.

8. I Had an Accident Synopsis- Spongebob breaks his butt in a sand boarding accident, and it causes him to become terrified of the

outdoors. He becomes so afraid he vows to never come out again. Oh, and there is a gorilla at the end. It's pretty wild.

Best Moment- The Iron Butt or The Five Mile Long Spanking Train. These two jokes are just too good to ignore. The iron butt is perfect, and the spanking train is stupid. I love them both immeasurably.

7.Pizza Delivery Synopsis- In an attempt to make even more cash, Mr. Crabs creates the Krabby Pizza and forces his employees to go deliver it. The journey Spongebob and Squidward take is pretty intense, and really puts a spotlight on the characters relationship with one another.

Best Moment- This episode is chalk full of great moments. But Squidward comforting a crying Spongebob beats them all, because wholesome.

6. Sleepy Time Synopsis- Spongebob takes a trip into the dreamscape of Bikini Bottom, visiting the dreams of all of his friends.

The episode is here because it contains some really cool imagery and dissection of key characters, plus I’m a sucker for dream stuff.

Best Moment- Gary’s Dream.

Seeing Gary as a pomp and proper intellectual is super weird, but in a really cool way.

5. SB-129 Synopsis- Squidward seeks some alone time in this episode, as Spongebob is being particularly annoying. Things go array, and he is transported to the future. Spongebob is here as well however, so in

Synopsis- On Employee Brotherhood Day, Squidward gets Spongebob a pie.

Except the pie is actually a bomb and will explode within Spongebob when the sun sets. Desperate to try and fix this mistake as well as he can, Squidward spends the entire day doing things that Spongebob wants to do. The

then spend a final sunset together before Spongebob blows up into a million pieces. Nah, he doesn’t die, but that doesn’t mean the episode is any worse off.

Best moment- The Salmon Suit joke or the Pie-Bomb.

These are both so stupid hahaha I love it, I love this show so much.

2. Survival of the Idiots Synopsis- In this one, Spongebob and Patrick end up getting stuck in Sandy’s treedome during its winter period. Seeing as they cannot escape, they must figure out a way to survive till spring.

Best Moment- The Fur I know this may be controversial, as the Dirt Dan bits will be iconic for years to come.

However, I think that the reveal of Spongebob and Patrick’s stupid, stupid use of the fur is so funny it deserves the spot.

1. Band Geeks Synopsis-In our top episode, Squidward takes centerstage.

Through his rival, Squidward secures a gig at the Bubble Bowl. This is a dream come true for him, but there is only one problem. He has no band to actually perform with. Desperately, Squidward tries to teach the citizens of Bikini Bottom how to be the world’s best marching band.

It goes about as well as you’d expect Best Moment- “Sweet Victory” The ending to this episode is near perfection, and in my opinion could serve as an ending to the series as a whole. Squidward finally wins one, and man, is it sweet as hell.

Holiday classics in St. Peter this weekend ISA Gala, this SAINT PETER, MINN. – Artist, musician, and longtime retail employee Kaitlin Baumann Hohenstein fronts a seven-piece band of local musicians performing original tunes and selected holiday classics in “Holiday Music for People Who Are Sick of Holiday Music” on Saturday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Arts Center of Saint Peter.

“If you’ve ever worked in retail, you know the infamous holiday playlist most chain

stores use. Not only can this get old really quickly, it also kind of piles onto all the other less-than-jolly things that happen when you work in the retail or customer service,” Hohenstein says.

“Some are parodies of holiday tropes from older eras, and some simply make light of the things we all deal with during this season, whether we’re exhausted retail employees or just dealing with a tense family gathering.”

The original music will be available for purchase on CD, with a portion of proceeds going to Partners for Affordable Housing, which provides shelter for homeless families and individuals, and helps them secure economically viable long-term housing.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m., and music begins at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is $10. The show is for mature audiences. Cash refreshments will be available, provided by Patrick’s on Third and Morgan Creek Vineyards.

3. Graveyard Shift Synopsis- As the Krusty Krab starts their new 24-hour schedule, the employees get ready for their first night-shift.

The atmosphere changes from light-hearted to terrifying for Spongebob after Squidward regales him with the tale of the Hash-Slinging Slasher. After this, strange occurrences begin to happen just as Squidward said they would, until they culminate into the arrival of the slasher himself.

Best Moment- Nosferatu.

The appearance of classic silent movie character Nosferatu is completely unexpected and random. I don’t know if you can tell yet, but the random stupid stuff is my favorite.

Frank, he overcame his addictions and formed his own AA group which he hosts at his coffee shop after he closes. On the other hand, when Danica meets Charlie after a catfish scare and while he turns out to be a decent guy, she learns he is not as great as he expresses in his texts.

If you can enjoy “Nobody’s Fool” for what it is and without analyzing its flaws too much, you can legitimately enjoy the characters and the awkward conflicts they inflict upon each other.

CFB Playoff race coming down to the finish

Alabama and Clemson look to justify their position in the playoff race this weekend

BRADY OLSON STAFF WRITER As the weeks wind down in the college football season, the games have become more and more intense when looking at the top of the rankings. That will be at its most apparent this weekend, as all ten FBS conferences will have their conference championship games either Friday or Saturday. And some of these games will have high stakes for the College Football Playoff.

Conference championship week is fun to watch because you have every level of play. If you want to watch two teams

The Alabama Crimson Tide (pictured above) are ready to flex their muscles this playoff season. you haven’t seen or heard of all year long, might I suggest the MAC Championship between Northern Illinois and

Buffalo. For some reason, it’s on Friday instead of Saturday, so it doesn’t get in the way of other games that are better

to watch.

Plus, Buffalo is 10-2 and is one of the more underrated squads in the country.

If you want to watch two ranked teams play for low stakes, might I recommend the Pac-12 Championship between #16 Washington and #17 Utah. They have both been out of the playoff discussion for over a month, and they had to win almost every game down the stretch just to get here.

Washington got to play spoiler to Washington State’s playoff dreams last week, and a win could get the Huskies into a good bowl game.

While the Pac-12 has been in a down year this season, this game will be a good watch for a Friday vacant of other Power 5 games.

Archibald scores twice, Coyotes rally past Wild 4-3 ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes struggled to do almost anything right for two periods Tuesday. Early in the third period, they could do no wrong.

Josh Archibald had two goals and an assist, and the Coyotes rallied from a twogoal, third-period deficit to defeat the Wild 4-3.

Minnesota led 3-1 after two periods and appeared to have the game in hand after a dominant second period. The Coyotes didn’t register a shot on goal in the first 17 minutes of the second.

But Arizona broke loose with a three-goal flurry in the first 8:39 of the third to pull ahead and held on for the win.

“The overall mood was good,” defenseman Alex Goligoski said of the Coyotes locker room during the second intermission. “No one was really going crazy, banging sticks or anything. It was just like, ‘Alright, that one’s over. Let’s get one here early and see what happens.’”

And that’s exactly what happened, as Archibald scored his first goal of the season to pull the Coyotes to within one 3:07 into the third.

Arizona’s first goal, picked up a turnover in the Minnesota zone and fed Archibald, who beat Devyn Dubnyk with a wrist shot from the high slot.

Minnesota challenged the goal, alleging that Archibald was offside, but video replay confirmed the call on the ice.

The Coyotes then scored twice in less than two minutes to take the lead. Michael

Grabner tied it when he took a pass from Brad Richardson, who had set up behind the net, and shot past Dubnyk.

Goligoski set up the goahead goal when he fired a pass from behind his own net to the Minnesota blue line, where Archibald split two defensemen, took the pass in stride and beat a diving Dubnyk for his second goal of the

game and a 4-3 lead for the Coyotes. “(Goligoski) saw me coming right off the bench and made a great pass,” Archibald said. “I saw that (Dubnyk) was coming out to poke check and snap the pads on me. The puck rolled on me a little bit, kind of helped me in a way, and I was just able to chip it over him and in the

net.”

Charlie Coyle, Zach Parise and Jason Zucker scored as the Wild took command through two periods. Jared Spurgeon assisted on all three goals, matching his career high for assists in a game.

TANKING: a recipe for disaster Opinion

AARON YOUNG STAFF WRITER Tanking. No, not the think tank or the water tank. Tanking as in laying down what you have and calling it quits.

Just not caring anymore in the sports world. This is most evident in basketball. A basketball team decides to give up and lose every game on purpose. Their players perform terribly and they just suck. Why? There is a reason for this, and in few cases, the worst team actually benefits from the system.

This is because the NBA has a lottery system. The teams with the worst records get a first dibs on the best players the NCAA has to offer. That isn’t terrible what-

Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, got in trouble for the following remarks on the Dr. J podcast.

“I’m probably not supposed to say this. I just had dinner with a bunch of our guys the other night, and

here we are, you know, we weren’t competing for the playoffs.” He then said losing is their best option. Cuban got fined $600,000 for that comment.

Sports are meant to be competitive in nature and there can only be one “king of the mountain.”

In Pitt’s defense, it’s not their fault that the ACC Coastal Division is a pile of hot garbage. Miami was the early favorite to win the division, and then we found out that they can’t throw the ball.

Then Virginia Tech stepped into the picture, until they collapsed and lost to Old Dominion, a 4-8 school that you may have never heard of outside of Virginia.

There are five 7-5 teams in this division, and Pitt just happened to emerge from the fire. Congrats on winning the division, but you have zero chance of winning against this Clemson team.

If you want a game that is underrated in its upset potential, look no further than the American Championship

between #7 UCF and Memphis.

UCF has won 24 straight games, but they have lost QB McKenzie Milton for the season with a knee injury, leaving backup Darriel Mack in charge of the offense.

Memphis has won their last four games and have plenty of experience against UCF. They lost to UCF in the AAC Championship last year in overtime, and came up just short in their upset bid earlier in the season.

Memphis has had more than enough with UCF, and they have a great change to make a statement on Saturday.

And now, if you want good football that matters, you are in luck.

gia in a rematch of last year’s national championship. In the Big 12 Championship, #5 Oklahoma is playing #9 Texas. This is also the game to watch if you hate punts and defense, as Oklahoma just beat West Virginia 59-56 and lost to Texas earlier in the year by a score of 48-45.

In the Big Ten Championship, #6 Ohio State plays a red-hot Northwestern team that is 21st went 8-1 in Big Ten play.

This weekend of college football is when stakes are at their highest. Teams are jostling for position in bowl games, and some are fighting for the very top. But no matter who you watch, every team is fighting for the same thing: The right to be called champions.

This sometimes works as teams need to rebuild like the 76ers. Their motto was “Trust the Process” as they were terrible year after year.

When teams throw out the competitiveness because there is no point in playing anymore, that ruins the integrity of the game. The purpose of sports is to become the best and nothing less.

Connecting back to the lottery system, the NBA is partially to blame for this.

Teams who know they are terrible and have no shot want to lose to get the next rising star.

Once in a while, it works out the way it was supposed to, with the worst team getting the No. 1 pick.

Last year, the Suns had the worst record and got the first pick, drafting DeAndre Ayton. This year, the Suns are once again dead last in the NBA but that’s because of there is a staggering amount of star power in the West.

Losing intentionally is also disrespectful for the fans who pay to watch their favorite superstars. No matter the team, their fanbase wants to see the best players they have to offer on the court. Not somebody who would normally get three to five minutes of playing time.

Adam Silver, commissioner of the NBA, acknowledged tanking in an interview with ESPN, but also sees the complexity in the issue.

Silver said, “We recognize that our goal was to put the best competition on the floor, and it’s balanced against legitimate rebuilding of some teams. But I know we’re not there yet, and I certainly wasn’t satisfied [this season].”

He said this in April. Fans can only hope him Silver can find a solution or any solution for that matter, because no one wants to go to a basketball game where their best star isn’t playing.

Mav football to take on #6 Tarleton State KEVIN KORBEL SPORTS EDITOR The Minnesota State Mavericks football team (12-0), who came into the NCAA tournament as the #1-seed in the NCAA tournament, look ready to face-off with the #6-ranked team heading into the tournament, the Tarleton State Texans (12-0), at home Saturday at Blakeslee Stadium. Game time is set for noon on Saturday.

Saturday’s game between Minnesota State and Tarleton State will be the first meeting between them, and what a matchup it’ll be. Going into this matchup, both teams are undefeated, which makes it a real matchup of two football giants this season.

Minnesota State is coming off a huge win last weekend at home, defeating CSU-Pueblo 24-10 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Blake.

With the win, MSU improved its all-time record in the NCAA Tournament to 10-10, advancing to the third round of the playoffs for the second year in a row.

On the other side, the Tarleton State Texans improved their record to 12-0 last weekend as it bested Texas A&M-Commerce 34-28 in

Stephenville, Texas.

The team’s 12 wins are the most in a season in program history.

The two teams on paper look to be an even matchup.

As a team, MSU has averaged 43.1 points and 464.1 yards of offense a game this season, while the Texans

football, both teams have been stellar on defense this season.

For MSU, opponents have averaged 15.5 points and 281.3 yards of offense a game, while opponents against the Texans average 16.8 points and 293.8 yards of offense a game.

The biggest concern for the Mavericks this season is stopping the Texans two-headed monster on offense, in running backs Xavier Turner and Daniel McCants.

Turner leads the TSU rushing attack with 1,391 yards and 22 touchdown carries,

and Shane Zylstra, have been the team’s bread and butter this season.

Gunn leads the MSU rushing attack with 1,295 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns.

Gunn’s 20 rushing touchdowns are the most in a season in team history.

The winner of this matchup looks to move on to the semi-finals of the NCAA tournament, and inches closer to bringing home a championship to their respected schools.
