Vetter, Mavericks soccer aims for victory in 3rd round

ANDREW NEURURER SPORTS EDITOR The Minnesota State Mavericks soccer team will be taking on the Central Missouri Jennies in the third round of the NCAA Tournament Friday.

The Mavericks are 2-4-1 in games against Central Missouri. However, in the one meeting between the two teams this season, the Mavericks came away with a 2-0 win.

MSU is ranked No. 1 in its region and the Jennies are right behind them at two. Entering play, Central Missouri is 19-2-1 and the Mavericks are 18-3-1.

The Jennies are led by junior Makayla Toth, who is leading the team with 18 goals. She has eight assists to go along with that.

Sophomore Kassie New-

som is second on the team in goals with eight, but she’s tied with junior Haley Freeman for a team leading nine assists.

Sophomore goaltender Lindsey Johnson has been great in the net. She’s entering play with a record of 18-21 and has a save percentage

with 13 and has eight goals to her stat line.

Freshman Allie Williams enters play with the second most goals on the team with 10. The three of them should carry the bulk of the offense against Central Missouri.

MNSU provost chosen as Penn State Brandywine chancellor MARIA LY STAFF WRITER

Marilyn Wells, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Minnesota State University, Mankato, has been appointed chancellor at Penn State Brandywine effective Jan. 13, 2020.

Provost Wells is expecting to continue in her current roles until mid-January. A farewell reception in her honor will be held Jan. 8, 2020.

President Richard Davenport, in a press release, said, “I am happy for her new opportunity and have every confidence she will be successful in her new endeavor.

I know that I speak for many campus and regional leaders in saying that we will miss Dr.

Wells’ dedication and visionary leadership here at Minnesota State Mankato, one of Minnesota’s top universities.”

Wells has been serving in her roles at MNSU since July of 2013.

In her roles, she reports directly to the president, she also serves in the president’s cabinet and contributes in the management of the University.

She provided leadership for the University’s research enterprise, library services, global education, online education and institutional diversity and inclusion.

Multiple departments celebrate diverse graduates HELLEN AKINYI STAFF WRITER An annual dinner aimed to celebrate the graduates from the Institutional Diversity office was held Monday in the Centennial Student Union.

The graduates are students from the offices that are under Institutional Diversity, the Women’s Center, the LGBT Center, Accessibility Resources and the Multicultural Center.

When the Office of Diversity and Inclusion decided to hold this event annually, it was to not only celebrate the students, but also show appreciation for their time and the willingness to be part of their programs.

People from the offices involved were proud of how the event turned out. The smiles on the faces of the families and friends of the graduates showed how proud they seemed to be of them.

There were about 166 graduates at the dinner this year. The students normally dress up for the dinner and bring their loved ones along to celebrate the night with them. The dinner was hosted and organized by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

When asked about how the office feels about the annual fall graduation dinner, Megan Heutmaker, the director of the Center of American Indian Affairs, said, “The Office of Diversity and Inclusion is always proud to recognize

the hard work of the students and celebrate them and their accomplishments.”

The event was important because not only does it get to celebrate the students, but it’s also a way to show future graduates that their hard work pays and allows the graduates to be a role model.

The graduates were also given some words of advice, as they near the end of their time as students and get ready to find jobs and grow in their respective fields.

State & local leaders at MNSU for Environmental Congress MICHAEL MCSHANE NEWS EDITOR The Centennial Student Union was the location of the Minnesota Environmental Congress where Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and his cabinet came to discuss the current issue of global climate change and the impact it has had in the state Tuesday.

Hundreds of other leaders in environment policy and groups came to either attend or speak at the event which covered a wide arrange of issues including rising temperatures, water erosion and clean energy.

“We’re taking a holistic approach across the enterprise of government and that started early on when we proposed the 2050 Plan to have Minnesota be zero carbon emissions by 2050 on power generation,” Gov. Walz said on Minnesota’s future plans for the environment.

Gov. Walz spoke about how the growing consensus in the science community that global warming is not only real, but its effects are already being seen both in Minnesota and around the country.

Other speakers at the event included the executive director of Minnesota’s Envornmental Quality Board Will Seuffert, the lead scientist for the Global Water Initiative Dr. Kate Brauman, and current Presidet of Minnesota State University, Mankato Richard Davenport who introduced Gov. Walz on stage.

Grace Goldtooth, the vice president of the Lower Sioux Indian Community was set to be one of the plenary speakers at the event, but became ill and was unable to attend.

Dr. Brauman in her speech displayed data that showed Minnesota’s weather and temeperature throughout the century. The data showed that as Minnesota got closer to the end of the 20th Century, there were significantly less cold and snow days and more wet and rainy days.

“We just don’t see these

really, really cold days anymore,” Dr. Brauman said.

“Our cold season is not as cold and not as long.”

The enviornmental congress included two breakout sessions back to back which allowed audience members to go listen in and learn about specific topics that re-

late to both the environment and climate change.

Some of the sessions included “Pathways to Decarbonizing Transportation”, “Climate Justice, Energy, and Equity” and “Adapting to Climate Change: Innovative Strategies from around Minnesota”.

As this was going on, Gov. Walz spoke inside the Multicultural Center with Student Government and minority students discussing many of the challenges minority students face during the semester including the high cost of tuition.

668,000 will lose food stamp benefits under new work rules WASHINGTON (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of Americans who rely on the federal food stamp program will lose their benefits under a new Trump administration rule that will tighten work requirements for recipients.

The move by the administration is the latest in its attempt to scale back the social safety net for low-income Americans. It is the first of three proposed rules targeting the Supplemental Nutrition Program, known as SNAP, to be finalized. The program feeds more than 36 million people.

The plan, announced Wednesday, will limit states from exempting work-eligible adults from having to main-

tain steady employment in order to receive benefits.

The Agriculture Department estimates the change would save roughly $5.5 billion over five years and cut benefits for roughly 688,000 SNAP recipients. That’s down from its original estimate that 750,000 people would lose benefits.

Under current rules, work-eligible able-bodied adults without dependents and between the ages of 18 and 49 can currently receive only three months of SNAP benefits in a three-year period if they don’t meet the 20hour work requirement. But states with high unemployment rates or a demonstrable lack of sufficient jobs can

waive those time limits.

The new rule imposes stricter criteria states must meet in order to issue waivers. Under the plan, states can only issue waivers if a city or county has an unemployment rate of 6% or higher. The waivers will be good for one year and will require the governor to support the request.

The final rule will be published in the federal register Thursday, and go into effect in April.

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said the rule will help move people “from welfare to work.”

“We want to encourage people by giving them a helping hand, but not an in-

finitely giving hand,” he said.

Congressional Democrats and advocates for the poor were quick to condemn the administration’s actions.

Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said the plan will only serve to punish workers whose jobs are seasonal or unreliable.

“This administration is out of touch with families who are struggling to make ends meet by working seasonal jobs or part time jobs with unreliable hours,” said Stabenow, the top Democrat on the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, & Forestry.

House Republicans unsuccessfully pushed to include SNAP work requirement provisions in last year’s farm bill.

Stabenow said “there’s a reason” they didn’t make it into the final version.

Robert Greenstein, president of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, said the rule would disproportionately affect minorities. He urged better job training and a higher minimum wage instead.

“Denying them basic food and nutrition is not the route that a fair and compassionate administration of either party should take,” he said in a statement.

What attracted Wells to this role at Penn State Brandywine was their land-grant mission that focuses on providing access to affordable educational opportunities and partnering with community organizations and local businesses.

According to Davenport,

the University will conduct a national search for its next permanent provost and senior vice president.

He has appointed Dr. David Jones, vice president of student affairs and enrollment management, and Dr. Gregg Marg, professor of biology and president of the Faculty Association, to serve as search co-chairs.

Davenport will appoint an interim provost to provide leadership and support for the Division of Academic Affairs during the search process.

Since Davenport’s presidency in the University since 2002, Wells is the fourth member to become a university president or chancellor.

She has not only been active in the university but also in the community. Since moving to Mankato, she has been recognized by YWCA Manka-

Minnesota sues e-cigarette maker Juul over youth vaping rise ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison sued Juul Labs on Wednesday, accusing the e-cigarette maker of unlawfully targeting young people with its products to get a new generation addicted to nicotine.

The lawsuit filed in Hennepin County District Court in Minneapolis seeks to force Juul to stop marketing to young people; fund a corrective public education campaign in Minnesota on the dangers of youth vaping; fund vaping cessation programs; disclose all its research on vaping and health; and surrender all profits from its allegedly unlawful conduct.

“They have deceived and misled Minnesota consumers of all ages, creating a public nuisance, and especially harmed our young people,” Ellison said at a news conference with Gov. Tim Walz.

“Juul is by far the dominant e-cigarette manufacturer in America, and it’s growing fast.”

Ellison declined to put a dollar figure on how much money the state will seek in damages and civil penalties.

with the state’s landmark $7 billion settlement with the tobacco industry in 1998. He said the San Francisco-based company followed “Big Tobacco’s playbook” of marketing to young people.

Juul issued a statement saying it’s “working cooperatively” with attorneys general, regulators and other stakeholders to prevent underage use of its products and to switch adult smokers

away from conventional cigarettes. The company said it recently stopped accepting orders for mint-flavored pods in the U.S. and suspended all its broadcast, print and digital product advertising in the country.

“Our customer base is the world’s 1 billion adult smokers and we do not intend to attract underage users,” the statement said.

Juul Labs — which is facing

a growing number of state and federal investigations into its marketing and sales — is about one-third owned by tobacco giant Altria, the maker of Marlboro and other popular brands.

The Minnesota lawsuit is separate from lawsuits filed by several other states in the last two weeks.

Ellison said Juul created a public nuisance and violated Minnesota’s consumer pro-

tection laws by developing “products with higher, more potent and more addictive doses of nicotine than conventional cigarettes, and other e-cigarettes, then not only failed to disclose that to its customers, but represented that its products were safe alternatives to cigarettes.”

Walz said Juul knew the harm when it deliberately targeted Minnesota’s children “for simple greed and simple profit.” Using the money Minnesota received under the 1998 settlement, he said, the state brought youth tobacco use way down “until the scourge of vaping” came along.

The attorney general’s office hired two outside law firms, Robins Kaplan and Zimmerman Reed, to represent the state. Robins Kaplan also represented Minnesota in the epic litigation that led to the 1998 settlement, which forced the industry to turn over millions of pages of previously undisclosed documents on its practices.

“And they will use their merchant of death playbook to tell us we’re bad parents, to tell us we have bad kids, to tell us that we should have known,” Walz said.

THOMAS BOWMAN STAFF WRITER Imagine being in the front row to see your favorite band play the coolest venue in town.

You got your tickets months early so you’ve been anticipating the show for a while.

Now picture a sweaty, stinky stranger shoving past you and sliding into that front row spot you previously occupied. And the here’s worst part about the situation: you can’t do anything to get that spot back.

Going to concerts has been a popular pastime throughout history - from Shakespeare plays at the Globe Theatre to crazy competitions held at the Roman Colosseum.

Going to concerts is an activity that many people enjoy and strive to have a good experience while attending.

It’s really disappointing when audience members pay good money to see their favorite artist only to have to deal with an annoying person being disrespectful.

There are several things concert goers should be aware of before going to a show.

An important part of going to a concert is refraining from talking at times when it’s disrespectful to talk.

This means not talking when the performer is sing-

ing, talking or doing whatever their act requires. Good times to talk are before and after the show.

If the concert has multiple bands playing, it’s okay to converse between each band set.

In a more classical professional setting, the lights will flicker before the show starts to remind the audience to lower their voices.

It is also polite to hold your applause until all selections in a set are completed. One of the musical performance practices currently is for a performer to acknowledge all applause.

It can be challenging for

younger and less experienced artists to maintain attention, especially when there are multiple songs for an artist or group. Some classical pieces of music are separated into different parts called movements. In between movements, the music will pause for a few moments.

The slight pause between movements is the time for the artist to prepare the mental tone for the next part. Having to acknowledge applause by bowing can throw the performer’s concentration off.

Sometimes applause during a selection is acceptable. For instance, if there are any soloists in an ensemble

such as a jazz group, the audience often applauds when the soloists finish their solos.

Usually, the director also acknowledges the soloists during the applause for the whole group when each piece is finished.

Those are several rules to follow while at a show.

There are more that should be acknowledged such as refrain from cell phones, no flash photography, whistling and the more apparent manners.

Remember to always respect the artists and the audience when attending concerts.

Food insecurity an issue despite University assistance MARIA LY STAFF WRITER Food insecurity affects two-thirds of students at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Since the Sociology in Action class did their study on student food insecurity in 2018, more awareness around the issue has risen.

First of all let’s talk about what some of the things that the school has done.As my time as a student here, I’ve noticed that the University has done a lot with bringing awareness and raising money for resources like the Campus Cupboard and Campus Kitchen.

Through student organizations, offices, and departments within the university, there have been plenty of food drives. Some that brought a significant amount of donations such as the annual chilli off or the food drive against Winona State.

The Student Government has taken the issue with food insecurity and has even created a basic needs committee.

Volunteers and students affiliated with the Campus Cupboard and Campus Kitchen has done more advocacy work as the attendance to the cupboard has doubled. Some of their advocacy efforts included opening it up during Choose-a-palooza for new students to tour and get to know the resource.

There have been more events centered around food insecurity with the biggest event being the Community Engagement’s annual National Homelessness Aware-

ness Week.

Offices like the Women’s Center, LGBT Center, Oasis, and the Multicultural Center has held open kitchens for students to come get a free lunch. Some of these offices give away meal tickets for students who need them.

The Alumni and Foundation Center has featured the Campus Cupboard and has gotten donations from alumni.As you can see, there has been an immense effort, too many to list, that the University has done to bring awareness to this serious issue.

However, there’s still a lot we can do.

When doing a research project for my communications class where we explored student food insecurity and the current campus cupboard, we found that a lot of students did not know about these resources. Why is that? Is the promotion of these resources not enough?

What are we not doing?

In my opinion, I think there could be greater promotion on social media. Most students spend their time online, and promoting it through pages that have a popular following amongst students would be quite effective. Word of mouth is also a powerful tool, but it needs to be through other students.

Tell your friends or your classmates about resources like the Campus Cupboard and we can triple attendance.

Another problem of why students do not know about these resources is the location of them. When you tell a student the Campus Cupboard is located in Crossroads Church, they might have no idea where that could be. When you tell them it’s

behind the Performing Arts building, they might think it’s too far or don’t have the time to walk all the way over there.

If we the students can get our school a sports bubble, I definitely think we can get an on-campus cupboard. I understand there are limitations such as money, grants in place, building it, and utilities and appliances, but I believe it’s possible.

I also think that there should be a central place that food insecure students can go to for help. I know that the Community Engagement office is happy to help food insecure students, but do students know that they can get help there?

There can also be additions to the university website, such as a resource tab with information that can greatly help food insecure students such as current resources or how to apply for food benefits such as SNAP. Another problem that could be easily fixed is the issue of students not having access to kitchen tools such as can openers, baking dishes, mixing bowls, etc. I think it would be a really effective idea to have a rental program for these kitchen tools like the library currently has with technology.

These ideas and solutions are obviously only possible in the long run. For now, we need to keep having these conversations and acknowledge that food insecurity is a problem - something we’ve had a great start in doing.

Overall, I think the school is heading into the right direction in assisting students facing food insecurity but there is always room for improvement.

Trump aims for role of NATO statesman but mars unity message

WATFORD, England (AP) — Aiming to play the role of global statesman as the impeachment drama was unfolding in Washington, President Donald Trump instead shattered NATO’s professed message of unity at its 70th anniversary celebration in England and put his personal and policy differences with alliance members on stark display.

Trump called Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “two-faced” and French President Emanuel Macron “nasty” during a 52-hour trip that exposed the alliance’s divisions on military budgets and relations with Turkey, as well as the U.S. leader’s own unconventional ways on the world stage.

At the same time, he found it difficult to leave behind events in Washington, lashing out as House Democrats resumed their push for impeachment over Trump’s call for Ukraine to investigate a political rival. He said it was “sad” that Democrats were pushing ahead with the inquiry when “there was no crime whatsoever and they know it.”

Trump, looking to showcase foreign policy wins as he heads into an election year, offered a more optimistic outlook for NATO’s future. He took credit for boosting the share of NATO nations that are meeting the alliance’s goal of spending 2% of gross domestic on defense and sought to pressure

more countries to increase their military budgets. But he also put a spotlight on his administration’s lingering to-do list: ending a China trade war he instigated, passing the U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement as well as trade deals with the European Union and Britain.

A day after Trudeau was overheard gossiping about Trump during a reception at Buckingham Palace, Trump called the Canadian leader “two-faced.” In an unguarded conversation, Trudeau told leaders, including Macron and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, that “he takes a 40-minute press conference off the top,” an apparent reference to Trump’s long and unscheduled question-and-answer session with journalists earlier that day.

Trudeau also said, seemingly about his meeting with Trump, “You just watched his team’s jaws drop to the floor.”

Trump fired back during a Wednesday afternoon meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He suggested that the Canadian’s overheard comments were precipitated by Trump’s decision to highlight the fact that Canada falls short of NATO goals on defense spending.

“The truth is that I called him out on the fact that he’s not paying 2% and I guess he’s not very happy about it,” Trump said. Later, seeming to relish the spat, Trump remarked, “That was funny when I said that guy was two-

faced.”

Relations between Trump and Macron, once the American president’s closest European ally, deteriorated a day earlier in feisty exchanges on live television.

First, Trump slammed what he called “very, very nasty” comments by Macron, who had lamented NATO’s “brain death” under Trump’s leadership of the U.S. Then, in a later meeting on the sidelines of the summit, Macron rebuked Trump over his insistence that Europe repatriate its citizens who fought with the Islamic State group, as well as his unilateral decision to withdraw American troops from

northeast Syria.

Trump’s shift on Syria had cleared the way for a Turkish assault on Kurdish fighters who had been allied with the west in the fight against IS militants. There was more disagreement between Trump and European leaders over Turkey. Macron, in particular, wanted the alliance to do more to confront Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan over his incursion into Syria and his purchase of Russian surface-to-air missiles.

On Wednesday, Trump falsely claimed that Macron had taken back his comments about NATO’s “brain death,” even though the French lead-

er said he stood by them.

It was far from the only inconsistency highlighted during two days of summitry.

Trump, who has celebrated every new stock market high, claimed that he didn’t pay too much heed to the market after stocks tumbled following his remarks that a China trade deal may not come until after Election Day. He also claimed it was his decision not to more quickly reach an agreement with China, as relations have soured over U.S. support for pro-Democracy protests in Hong Kong. Previously, Trump had said it was China that would rather wait for the election results.

Impeachment takeaways: History lessons, partisan feuds WASHINGTON (AP) — The next phase of the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump moved to the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday with public hearings featuring professors of law who discussed the constitutional origins of Congress’ impeachment power.

Three of the lawyers were chosen by Democrats, one

by Republicans, and the experts split much like the committee, along partisan lines, over whether Trump committed an impeachable offense when he asked the president of Ukraine to investigate his political rival Joe Biden.

The lofty arguments about the Constitution were frequently interrupted by partisan sniping among committee members.

Here are some takeaways from the hearing: REPUBLICAN DISRUPTION Republicans allied with the president used the hearing to force procedural votes and delay the proceedings, adding to an unruly atmosphere even with the professors’ academic recounting of constitutional principles.

GOP members interrupted House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler and the expert witnesses, calling for more Republican witnesses, for a postponement of the hearing and for House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff to be called to testify. Schiff led the investigation into Trump’s dealings with Ukraine.

The top Republican on the Judiciary panel, Georgia Rep. Doug Collins, said the impeachment process is a “sham.” And he said the committee had been sidelined as other panels led the impeachment investigation.

“What a disgrace to this committee, to have the committee of impeachment

simply take from other committees and rubber stamp,” Collins said.

Collins also criticized the quick pace of the impeachment probe. Democrats hope to hold a final vote by Christmas.

“If you want to know what’s really driving this, there are two things — a clock and a calendar,” Collins said. ___ HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS The four law professors who testified brought history lessons to the hearing, with talk of American Founding Fathers and British monarchs, of the 18th-century Constitutional Convention and the 20th-century impeachment proceedings of Presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton.

Their testimony had a contemporary purpose, too, as Democrats look to bolster the argument for impeachment by having outside constitutional experts make the case that Trump committed an impeachable offense.

Three of the witnesses made clear they thought Trump’s conduct met the definition of an abuse of power that the constitutional framers had in mind for removal of a commander in chief. They said the president’s interaction with Ukraine amounted to high crimes and misdemeanors, the impeachment standard set out in the Constitution.

“If what we are talking about is not impeachable,” said Michael Gerhardt, a University of North Carolina law professor, “then nothing is impeachable.”

Pamela Karlan, a Stanford Law School professor, said the Founding Fathers were particularly concerned about foreign interference in American politics.

“The very idea that a president might seek the aid of a foreign government in his reelection campaign would have horrified them,” Karlan said. “But based on the evidentiary record, that is what President Trump has done.”

The lone dissenter was Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University professor, who said that although he is not a supporter of the president, he found the case against Trump legally weak and warned that it would “collapse” amid an absence of criminal intent. ___ BRIBERY IN THE CONSTITUTION The three Democratic witnesses agreed that Trump could be impeached for bribery as it is defined in the Constitution. Democrats have hinted that bribery could be one of the articles of impeachment.

Noah Feldman of Harvard Law School said the “clear sense” of the framers on bribery was “when the president corruptly asked for or received something of value to him from someone who could be affected by his official office.”

“So if the House of Representatives and the members of this committee were to determine that getting the investigations either announced or undertaken was a thing of value to President Trump, that was what he sought, then this committee and this House could safely conclude that the president had committed bribery under the Constitution,” Feldman said.

Karlan said that if Congress concludes that Trump asked for the investigations of Biden and his son to aid his reelection, “then yes, you have bribery here.”

Turley disagreed, warning

against using a “boundless interpretation” of bribery.

“The statement has been made, not just by these witnesses but Chairman Schiff and others, that this is a clear case of bribery. It’s not,” Turley said. ___ ANY QUESTIONS? There may have been four law professors at the hearing, but many of the lawmakers limited their questions to witnesses summoned by their own party — and some asked none at all.

Several GOP lawmakers, bypassing the chance to pose questions to witnesses, used their five-minute allotments with speeches that defended the president and attacked the impeachment proceedings as partisan and rushed.

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio praised the testimony of Turley, the GOP-se-

lected witness, but didn’t actually direct any questions to him.

Republican Rep. John Ratcliffe of Texas asked a series of questions of Turley but also chose to ignore the three witnesses Democrats relied on to make their impeachment case.

Democrats mostly did the same, focusing their queries to witnesses brought in by their party. Rep. Cedric Richmond, of Louisiana, brought up Turley several times but asked other witnesses — not him — about his testimony.

Still, there were some notable exceptions, such as when Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida challenged the witnesses on what he said were Democratic biases and anti-Trump leanings. He asked Gerhardt and Karlan about contributions they’d made to Democrats including President Barack Obama.

The 5 Best Albums of the Decade KOLBY SPOMER A&E EDITOR Ah the 2010’s, what a wonderful decade. We witnessed the 2010 Haitian earthquake, survived the apocalypse in 2012, elected the adult version of Eric Cartman as president, and I’m not even going to TOUCH the fact that throughout the whole thing we infected our home planet with some gross, sticky flu.

No, instead I want to focus on one of the few bright spots we did experience.

Namely, entertainment.

From film to music to video games, things have been pretty great this decade for entertainment lovers. “Haha yeah they have. Hey, Kolby, I’m having a tough time figuring out what the best games, albums, and movies were this decade. Can you help?”

Don’t you worry dear reader, I definitely can.

In this series of articles, I’ll be going through and discussing what my personal favorites for each of these categories are. This week, we’ll be covering music.

My taste for music has changed and grown with me this past ten years. I came into 2010 listening to Nirvana, Disturbed, and Avenged Sevenfold and left 2019 bumping Mac Demarco, Kanye West, and Lana Del Rey. Due to this drastic shift, I’ve grown to appreciate and enjoy many different genres of music. This list will reflect that, and be focused solely on what I found to be the best albums of this decade.

“To Pimp a Butterfly” by Kendrick Lamar Kendrick Lamar is one of the most critically acclaimed artists to come out of this decade, dropping three classic albums, those being “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City”, “DAMN”, and this album.

In “Good Kid”, Kendrick tells the story of the city of Compton, and what its like to grow and live there. In Butterfly, Kendrick evolves this theme into a grander exploration of what it’s like to be a black man in today’s society. Coming out during an extremely tense period of political and racially-based unrest, the album felt like more of a cultural moment than a piece of art. “Alright” was the anthem for Black Lives Matter, Kendrick was performing in chains at the Grammys, and the President was commending the rapper for his latest work.

Everything I’ve talked about would make it an easy contender for album of the decade, and I haven’t even gotten to the musical side

Continued from page 12 of it yet. Using a jazz based production, Kendrick crafted an album that sounded entirely unique. Everything from his rapping to the featured vocals to said jazz production flows and meshes together in a way we hadn’t experienced before and haven’t experienced since. It’s loss to Taylor Swift’s “1989” for album of the year at the Grammys is to this day one of the academies biggest faux pas’, as it started a decline in respect and recognition they haven’t yet gained back. I could keep droning on and on about how wonderful this record is, but I think you get the point.

If you haven’t, you need to listen to this album immediately.

“Melodrama” by Lorde Lorde was a somewhat mysterious figure before her sophomore album. Not many knew who this pop newcomer was before she dropped her breakout single “Royals” in 2013, but they learned soon after. Her debut album, “Pure Heroine”, was a massive success commercially, but critically it didn’t do as well. Many cited a sense of repetition and a lack of deep themes as reasoning for low scores, while also stating that her foundations were something that she could build off of. And build off of them she did, as “Melodrama” became one of the best pop albums of the decade.

Creating a newer, fresher sound with producer Jack Antonoff, Lorde explores what it feels like to be lost in your twenties. No album has captured a “feeling” for me the way this album has.

She completely and totally owns this album, and for that “Melodrama” is my pick for pop album of the decade.

“Blonde” by Frank Ocean This album is...weird.

On first listen, you probably won’t know how to feel. The vocals are layered throughout, with seemingly random pitch changes.

The production is somehow spacey yet grounded, and the themes are a struggle to grasp. However, one thing is clear. This album deserves a second listen. So you give it one, finding a more fleshed out theme of heartbreak and loss, a focus on “floating” aimlessly through life, and a sense of unrelenting movement. You liked it a bit more this time, so you listen one last time and it finally clicks, everything melds together into a perfect mess that culminates in you crying while smiling at 4 A.M.. It is the ultimate “sad” album, and

should be discussed far more frequently than it has been.

And it’s been discussed quite a bit.

Frank Ocean became a legend after he dropped “Blonde” and its counterpart “Endless”, not only because the albums were amongst the greatest of the decade, but because of what it did to the industry. By releasing “Endless”, a visual album exclusive to Apple Music, Frank fulfilled his label obligations and was free to do as he pleased. The next day, he released “Blonde”, which completely overshadowed “Endless” in sales and publicity due to its wider availability and status as a conventional album. Because this album was released after his contractual obligations to his label were ended with “Endless”, Frank was able to collect nearly seventy percent of the profit made, as opposed to the fourteen he would’ve gotten. This obviously shook the industry, but there was nothing they could do. Frank played them, and he played them well.

“My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” by Kanye West Kanye West is the physical embodiment of controversy. Everything he does is scrutinized and analyzed, deserved or not. One of the biggest and maybe the most notorious thing he has ever done was interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the VMAs. We all know how it went down, so we don’t have to revisit the moment.

What I’d rather focus on is the aftermath that culminated in the creation of the most concise and well made rap album of all time. After the outburst, Kanye went on talk show after talk show discussing how disgusted he was with himself due to his actions and that he was taking time off to focus on bettering himself. Exiling himself to Hawaii, Kanye also canceled his highly anticipated tour with Lady Gaga and spent his time out of the public eye.

While there, Kanye became inspired to make a new album. Wanting to keep things as secretive as possible, Kanye had the featured artists fly out to his rented mansion where they were sworn into secrecy. During the next few months, Kanye was completely manic, refusing to sleep for longer than ninety minutes at a time. Thankfully all this hard work paid off, as Fantasy released to extreme critical acclaim. Front to back every aspect of the album sounds, well perfect. The

production, the features, the rapping, everything. Everything about the album is exactly what it should be, there is nothing you could cut or add to improve the record.

The album perfectly encapsulates one man’s psyche and his desire to become better.

If you like rap music, you like this album. It’s that simple.

“Puberty 2” by Mitski Finally, we’ve reached the final album. This is most likely my most controversial pick, as Mitski isn’t as well known as the other artists listed, and her niche of “Indie rocker girl” has gone somewhat out of style. However, that doesn’t mean this album is any less deserving of it’s placement on this list.

“Puberty 2” is an exploration of one person’s growth from a girl into a woman.

Mitski dives into what life is after young adulthood and how things change, for better and worse. Combining extremely well performed instrumentals with her breathtaking vocals, the sound of this record is otherworldly. It is the pinnacle of what the genre can become. When combined with the themes, this record can stand toe to toe with any other album the decade has to offer. It’s a must listen for music lovers everywhere.

In the next edition of “Best of the Decade”, I’ll be discussing the best films to come out of the 2010’s. So get ready for that, because man is it gonna be...well it’ll be something. Thanks for reading.

Where can I get college textbooks for cheap?

College textbooks, aside from tuition, is one aspect of college that is highly overpriced for no logical reason. I personally always rent my textbook if possible, and on the rare occasion I will buy a book new.

It wasn’t until after my first semester at college where I found out I didn’t have to get all of my textbooks at the campus bookstore, but instead there are other resources at my disposal. My cousin told me about Amazon rental, which is great in many forms. Amazon rental allows students to find their textbook, and if they have it in stock, you have the option to either rent or buy the textbook at a cheaper price. After returning your book at the end of the semester, most of the money you spent on the book will be returned to you as well;

there is also an extension option if you need the textbook for longer than planned. Another website I like to use is Chegg; I found out about Chegg while buying textbooks for this current semester, and it saved my bank account.

Just like Amazon, Chegg offers textbooks, rental or new, for students to purchase for the semester. I haven’t returned any books to Chegg yet, so I’m not sure if you get any money back at all, but it’s better to spend $15 instead of $60 on a textbook. If there aren’t any other options, I will head to the campus bookstore to get my class materials.

Sundance sets lineup with Taylor Swift, ‘Tesla,’ ‘Downhill’ NEW YORK (AP) — A documentary on Taylor Swift will kick off the next Sundance Film Festival, where new films including the Will Ferrell-Julia Louis Dreyfus remake of the Swedish film “Force Majeure” and Benh Zeitlin’s long-awaited follow-up to “Beasts of the Southern Wild” are set to premiere.

Programmers for the preeminent showcase for independent cinema, founded by Robert Redford and set annually in the mountains of Park City, Utah, announced the lion share of the lineup for its 2020 edition on Wednesday. The lineup of 118 feature-length films, culled from a record 15,100 submissions, come from 27 countries, includes 44 first-time filmmakers and is among the most diverse in the festival’s 37-year history. In the four competition categories, 46% of the directors are women, 38% are people of color and 12% are LGBTQ. The coming Sundance, set for Jan. 23-Feb. 2, follows a 2019 festival that saw big-pocketed streaming services set off an avalanche of high-priced acquisitions, some of which notably fizzled at the box office. Amazon paid large sums for “Late

Night” and “The Report” but neither made much of a dent in theaters; Amazon is now shrinking its exclusive theatrical window for some releases. Warner Bros. paid $15 million for the Bruce Springsteen-infused coming-of-age tale “Blinded by the Light,” but it failed to catch on.

The biggest hit to emerge from last year’s crop was Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” which has grossed $17.7 million for A24. It’s been one of the bright spots in a trying marketplace this year for indie film. Still, Sundance, where movies like “Get Out,” “Little Miss Sunshine” and “The Big Sick” first debuted, remains the premier factory for breakout hits. Lately, that’s increasingly meant documentaries, too, including “RBG,” “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” and, from this year’s Sundance, “Apollo 11.”

Sure to add extra frenzy this year is Lana Wilson’s “Taylor Swift: Miss Americana,” which the festival describes as “a raw and emotionally revealing look at one of the most iconic artists of our time during a transformational period in her life.”

Netflix has acquired the film and plans to release it

in early 2020. It is also set to distribute seven more, including new films from “Mudbound” filmmaker Dee Rees and the fictional debut of “What Happened, Miss Simone” director Liz Garbus — an early sign that Netflix will play a prominent role in this year’s Sundance.

Apple, too, has already gotten in on the act, a year after making its first acquisition at Sundance (“Hala”).

On Monday, it picked up a high-profile documentary headed to Park City: Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick’s untitled film about a former music executive grappling with the decision to go public with a story of sexual assault by a notable figure in the music industry. Oprah Winfrey is an executive producer.

“This year’s festival is full of films that showcase myriad ways for stories to drive change, across hearts, minds, and societies,” Redford, president and founder of the Sundance Institute, said in a statement.

Among the films debuting in Sundance’s Premieres section is Nat Faxon and Jim Rash’s “Downhill,” the English-language remake of Ruben Ostlund’s “Force Ma-

jeure,” starring Louis-Dreyfus and Ferrell as a couple whose relationship is altered after they escape an avalanche.

On June 18, 2018 President Trump announced the creation of a new U.S. military branch known as Space Force, which would prepare America to take control over space before any other country could do so. Pretty dumb, right? It didn’t take long for American people, even people around the world, to laugh at this statement and question what goes on in the president’s head. One large corporation to give their input about this topic was Netflix, who, in response, is making a television series based on the new military branch.

This show, titled Space Force, is created by Greg Daniels and Steve Carell and

will star Carell, John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Diana Silvers, Jimmy O. Yang, Alex Sparrow and Tawny Newsome. According to Netflix, the plot of the show is set in a workplace that centers on a group of people tasked with establishing the sixth branch of the armed services. Given the creators of the comedy and the add in of government work, the show will resemble, or at least remind viewers, of the hit NBC television series The Office and Parks and Rec, which, in my opinion, is the best of both worlds.

Although Netflix announced the creation of this show on January 16 of this year, Space Force won’t be completed and uploaded onto the streaming website until sometime in 2020.

Football prepares for rematch with Texas A&M-Commerce

Mavericks and Lions will go toe-to-toe in the third round of the NCAA playoffs DE’VONTE BRADLEY STAFF WRITER The Minnesota State Mavericks football team has a chance at redemption against the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions.

Both teams have not faced one another in over two years, with the last meeting being in the 2017 playoffs.

Texas A&M-Commerce won that matchup against the Mavericks, 31-21.

Texas A&M-Commerce is on a hot streak, winning their previous six games and sitting at a record of 11-2.

The Lions blew out Colorado School of Mines in the second round of the playoffs, with the final score ending in 23-3.

MSU is coming off a blowout win against CSU-Pueblo themselves. They ran away with a 35-7 win. The Mavericks will look to do some of the specials things that helped them advance to the third round of the playoffs.

One of those things being their defense. The Mavericks defense played a huge part in their victory, holding the ThunderWolves to just 105 rushing yards and 71 passing yards. There were remarkable performances on defense by junior Cade Johnson, who ended with 10 tackles and senior Alex Goettl sitting not far behind with eight total tackles.

Texas A&M-Commerce’s defense is also something that MSU must look out for.

The Lions had an incredible 10 sacks in its last game, tying the NCAA Division II playoff record. One notable defense contributor being Elijah Earls, who had 3.5 sacks, who was also a half sack shy of tying the Division II record.

Men’s hockey to play homestand against Lake Superior State

Women’s hockey battles Minnesota Golden Gophers in Hall of Fame Classic ANDREW NEURURER SPORTS EDITOR Coming off an impressive sweep over the then No. 8 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, the No. 1 Minnesota State Mavericks men’s hockey team waits for the Lake Superior State Lakers in a two-game home series.

The Mavericks are 12-11 and will be competing against a struggling Lakers team, who are 5-12-1. On the road, Lake Superior State is just 1-7 and went 3-6-1 in the month of November.

Minnesota State has had the upper hand in the series, coming into the weekend 203-1 and are victorious in their last two games against Lake Superior State.

The Lakers are averaging 2.39 goals per game, whereas the Mavericks are getting up 3.8. MSU spent a lot of time attempting to kill the powerplay against the Bulldogs and throughout the season they’ve had success

shutting that down.

The Mavericks are 4-for-50 when they are shorthanded, which should fair well against the Lakers. Lake Superior State is scoring on 9.8% of their powerplay opportunities.

Senior Marc Michaelis has provided a big uplift on offense for MSU, sitting at 17 points (7 goals, 10 assists).

Senior Charlie Gerard is tied with Michaelis in a team-high seven goals.

Senior Park Toumie and freshman Nathan Smith are tied for second in points with 13. Smith has four goals and Toumie has six.

Sophomore goalie Dryden McKay has arguably been the best goalie in Division I hockey. He’s currently second in save percentage, stopping 95.4 percent and has 314 saves to his name. The leading goaltender has played 10 less games than McKay, however.

Men and women’s basketball takes on SMSU and USF JENNA PETERSON STAFF WRITER The Minnesota State Mavericks men and women’s basketball teams have started their seasons both strongly and with struggle, but that won’t stop them this weekend as they host the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs and the University of Sioux Falls Cougars at the Taylor Center.

On Friday, the woman’s team will start the night with their 5:30 p.m. game against Southwest Minnesota State.

Looking at the past ten games between SMSU and MSU, the Mustangs have won the last two matchups, both games ending within a 15-point margin, but every game before that has been a Mavericks win. Southwest Minnesota State might have a record of 5-1 for the 2019 season, compared to MSU’s record of 3-1, but the battle between the two teams should still be an interesting one to watch.

The men will follow with their game against the Mustangs starting at 7:30 p.m.

The two teams have a more balanced history, with six of the last 10 games going to Minnesota State. Almost each of their games have been close battles. The Mustangs currently hold an overall record of 3-4, compared to the Mavericks who are 2-4.

As long as the Mavericks hit the floor with determination and a hard fight, they should dominate the Mustangs.

The weekend games will continue into Saturday night, where MSU will take on Sioux Falls. The woman’s team will once again start the night with tip-off scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Based off the last 10 matchups between the two teams, the Mavericks will have to come up with new and creative game plans to take down the Cougars, who have won eight of the 10 games. Another leverage the Cougars have against the Mavericks is their overall game record of 7-0. This game will be a challenge for MSU, but with willpower and dedication, they can get the job done.

of the last 10 games have resulted in a win for the Mavericks, with many of the games ending in close score. At this point in the season, the Cou-

gars hold a 5-2 record. In order to improve their season record, the Mavericks need to work together and move the ball around the court.

women’s hockey and will be entering play 14-1-3.

The Mavericks are 7-9-2 and are 0-6-2 versus ranked opponents this season.

Minnesota State has three players in double figures for points. Junior Mariah

Gardner and freshman Kelsey King are tied for 12 points and sophomore Anna Wilgren is right behind them with 11.

Senior Emily Antony and sophomore Claire Butorac are knocking on the door

with nine points and will be looking to join the double figures club this Saturday.

Freshman Calla Frank and sophomore Abigail Levy have split time at the goaltender’s position. Frank has a better record of 4-3-1,

but Levy has a better save percentage, stopping 91.1% of the shots.

This game will be played on Saturday as a part of the 2019 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Museum Game.

Dominant North Dakota State happy at FCS level

FARGO (AP) — It’s only natural to ask two questions of a North Dakota State team that has won seven of the last eight Football Championship Subdivision titles and garnered the No. 1 seed again this year after blowing out nearly every opponent despite having a new coach and freshman quarterback at the helm.

Is it starting to get a little routine in Fargo? Does management think it’s time to move up to the Football Bowl Subdivision and face tougher competition?

The answers are yes and no.

While university president Dean Bresciani, athletic director Matt Larsen and Bison Football Players Association members say they haven’t heard anyone clamoring to make the move to the upper echelon of college football, they haven’t heard much cheering from fans in the second halves this season either.

That’s because many of them are gone by that time.

Bresciani said many of the second-half no-shows are students and people with short attention spans, adding that Alabama has tried unsuccessfully to deal with a similar problem. He acknowledged he is bothered by the mass exodus and doesn’t understand why people who shell out big bucks for tickets don’t want to get their money’s worth.

Some former Bison football players have even been spotted heading to the exits before the fourth quarter.

However, none of them see all this as a symbol of boredom that comes with sustained success. They note the 19,000-seat Fargodome sells out for every game, the booster club continues to thrive even though its members are asked to open their wallets wider and Bison nation turns Frisco, Texas, into South Fargo, North Dakota, for FCS championship games.

Bresciani puts it this way: Ticket-holders are “”satisfied with the product” and simply leaving early.

“I get it at some level,” Larsen added. “But whether you are the second team or third string guy and you’re working just as hard as the starter, to have people leave at halftime or the third quarter because they don’t think it’s worth watching, I struggle with that.”

Josh Swanson, a North Dakota State alumnus and self-proclaimed “super fan” who hosts a game day radio show in Fargo called “Herd it Hear,” said the Bison

dominance is beyond that of Alabama’s in the FBS. The school should “strike when the iron is hot” and advance to the next level, he said.

“Winning championships is great and the athletic department and the teams should be incredibly proud of that,” Swanson said. “But I think North Dakota State could go into any Group of Five conference now and compete for a conference title and a spot in the Cotton Bowl. As a fan, I think that’s something we should aspire to.”

Bresciani said he believes most people interested in a move up are under the impression that North Dakota State would be playing schools from the Power Five conferences, like Alabama, rather than the Group of Five teams, like Boise State or Wyoming. He said the Bison, with a current athletic budget of about $25 million, could not find the revenue to compete with Power Five teams.

Alabama’s athletic revenue is about $177 million.

That would leave the Group of Five conferences, which does not sound appealing to the university leader who would have to get on board to make it work.

“I don’t think anyone wants to see us play the University of Akron,” Bresciani said.

He noted that North Dakota State already is receiving a lot of national attention with wins over seven FBS

schools — six of them Power Five teams — in the last decade. NDSU is also proud of making two appearances as the host school and one as the visiting school for ESPN’s popular “College GameDay” show.

favorites for Saturday’s second-round game against Nicholls State at the Fargodome. Asked about the powerful Bison offense led by freshman sensation Trey Lance, who has not thrown an interception in college, Colonels coach Tim Rebowe compared them to a Power Five team.

Jimmy Lake relishes 1st chance as head coach at Washington SEATTLE (AP) — Secrecy and confidentiality were of the utmost importance to Jimmy Lake. He wanted to respect the wishes and timeline of how word would be spread that Chris Petersen was about to step down and Lake was about to become the new head coach at Washington.

In a house filled with family during the Thanksgiving weekend holiday, that proved a challenge.

“There were definitely some looks at me,” Lake recalled after getting the first phone call on Saturday of what was about to transpire.

“Even my son, Jimmy Jr., I was staring at him knowing I was going to be the next football coach at Washington and he goes, ‘Dad, what are you doing? What are you looking at me like that for?’ I go, ‘Oh nothing.’ They knew something was going on, but they had no idea this was the news.”

Lake finally looped in most of his family on Sunday night or Monday morning before the news became public that the 42-year-old was taking over for Petersen and getting his first opportunity as a head coach at Washington.

For the past few seasons Lake has been coveted by other programs around the country for his skill as a defensive tactician and his success as a recruiter. But he never left Seattle, never left Petersen’s side.

In part it was because of the opportunity Petersen gave

Lake years ago at Boise State.

Lake had long admired what he had seen from Petersen’s programs at Boise State while coaching in the NFL. Lake was a Northwest native and always kept and eye in that direction even as he coached in Detroit and Tampa Bay with the pros.

When Tampa Bay underwent a coaching change in 2011 and Lake was out of a job, he was determined to work for Petersen.

“I wanted to go see what the secret sauce was all about,” Lake recalled. “There is something about Chris Petersen’s program over at Boise State — and that’s when they were winning Fiesta Bowls and going 11-0, 12-0 — and fortunately I was able to work with him. He hired me as the defensive backs coach and it didn’t take long to figure out what the secret sauce was.”

It also didn’t take Petersen long to realize Lake had the qualities to eventually be a head coach. And over time it became clear he could be an obvious choice as Petersen’s successor, whenever that day arrived.

“I have no doubt this is the better thing for these kids and this program and this fan base for Jimmy to go and inject his vision and his energy into this,” Petersen said.

Lake plans to implement and continue many of Petersen’s philosophies that have been well received by players and Washington’s administration. But on the field, Lake

may be a little less CEO of the program and more deeply involved in the schemes Washington will use.

“What’s going to be a little bit different is I am passionate about Xs and Os. I am passionate about football strategy,” Lake said. “It’s what has driven me really in the beginning of my career going all the way up to the National Football League and then really taking a next step there. And so that’s really what I want to do is bleed that passion over into all three phases, offense, defense and special teams.

And I think that’s where it will be a little bit different, a little bit more attacking, a little bit

more aggressive. And that’s what I’m excited about.”

Lake also wasn’t deterred from taking over the job after hearing the reasons for why Petersen is stepping away.

All involved are hoping for a seamless transition through Washington’s bowl game, into the offseason and toward Lake’s first game in charge, currently scheduled for Sept.

5, 2020 against Michigan.

“I think I’m going to be able to lean on our football staff,”

Lake said. “I think I’ve been through some hard times already in my career. If you go back and check we’ve been through some tough seasons. I can always lean back on those experiences that are going to help me. And this is a tough business and this program is going to be tough, it’s going to be unified, it’s going to be competitive and we’re going to have to deal with some setbacks, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
