Blue Bricks home to a large variety of taps
TOMMY WIITA Looking for a bar with a friendly atmosphere, affordable drinks, and tasty food? Blue Bricks of Downtown Mankato is your place to go! Located on 424 South Front Street, Blue Bricks has been a popular place for friends to gather since 1999. From USA hockey jerseys hanging behind the bar, to
a framed poster of The Rat Pack, the décor inside of Blue Bricks is comforting and fitting for many different customers. The building itself is made entirely of bricks, including some random ‘blue bricks’ scattered throughout the bar. They also offer a lounge area in the middle of the establishment, which is convenient for those looking to relax in something other

than a chair or booth. They also offer some arcade games around the building, including darts and two pool tables. Their spacious, outdoor patio is something to enjoy when the weather is appropriate as well. I once had a get-together there with many co-workers, and the lounge area was impressively big enough for all of us to be in. The staff was
friendly, the drinks were great, and the atmosphere was enjoyable. We ordered some pizzas, which to my surprise, turned out to be some quality food (I had never eaten there before). It had everything to occupy one’s time: televisions, pool, darts, and music. I have also been there when both the main bar and back bar were open, and the entire building was loaded with
people. It was late summer so the patio was available, providing a nice environment just outside the bar. What goes unsaid about Blue Bricks is their approachable staff. All employees look and act is if they enjoy working at that establishment, which

is always encouraging to go back there for the excellent service. The feeling of being in that bar offers a more comfortable one than others, as it has all the looks and style of a modern, hipster-like atmosphere. Being from the Twin Cities, it reminds me a little of the Blue Door in St. Paul and Minneapolis. Their happy hour is fulfilling for both their appetizers and drinks. All appetizers, including the Nachos Grande, Jalapeno Poppers and Fried Calamari Rings, are $1 off during happy hour. The specials for drinks include $2
Grainbelts served in a large glass, and discounts on rails, bottled beer and tap beer. When it comes to Blue Bricks’ menu, their pizza pies are favorites amongst customers. They also offer carry out and free delivery from 11 a.m.-midnight every day. Blue Bricks also offers a catering service for their customers who would like the Blue Bricks experience brought to them. Whether it’s to solve your search for tasty food, or numerous craft beers to choose from, Blue Bricks of Downtown Mankato is the place to be.

NUMBER 4
2017
Number 4 is number one restaurant in Mankato CHRIS BERTRAND This year’s Best Restaurant in Mankato winner is Number 4 American Bar and Kitchen and it’s no surprise why: with its multicultural menu options and attractively dim ambiance, Number 4 serves high-quality, seasonally fresh cuisine at a scale that affectionately accommodates Mankato’s culinary desires and raises the local dining standards to impressive degrees. Number 4’s diverse menu includes such entrees as the crispy “Duck Cassoulet,” which is a casserole slowcooked in a bath of white beans and pork belly, and the spicy “Thai Coconut Curry Barramundi,” an Asian
sea bass that is pan-seared and served with thin potato strips, rice, and greens. Another intriguing entrée is the “Korean Braised Short Rib” with noodles, hard-boiled egg, and bok choy. Despite their mouth-watering extravagancy, however, these exotic entrees are by no means the only options at Number 4. In fact, the Best Restaurant winner thrives just as much with its pub-style menu options as it does with the exotic. Take, for instance, the delicious vegetarian staple “Short Pants,” a baguette sandwich equipped with a gambit of veggies and bal-

to play? Thrift stores offer new life to these items, getting to come back another time to be used again by people. Possibilities extend to no end in what you might find from stopping at a thrift store. They’re a great way to find gently used items at a great price and Mankato’s MRCI Thrift Shop delivers just that.

At their core, the MRCI Thrift Shop is a volunteer operated, nonprofit fundraising project of the MRCI Auxiliary. The MRCI thrift store has come a long way from humble beginnings, starting back in 1963 as a mere rummage sale. Officially opening their doors for the first time on June 15, 1964 with only 30 volunteers, the store now has
over 150 volunteers and is always looking for extra help. The goals of the MRCI thrift shop is something that sets them apart form other thrift stores. A primary function of the shop is to raise money in order to help people with disabilities served by MRCI WorkSource. The store also is a way to provide employment training in the real

As Mankato’s oldest pizzeria and one of the oldest restaurants in the city, Pagliai’s never disappoints. The restaurant is available for walk-in, takeout, and delivery, and features amazing pizza with tons of cheese on every slice. Pagliai’s never skimps on toppings and offers an array of classic and specialty pizzas on thin, classic, and deep dish style crusts. JERSEY MIKE’S
2017
Jersey Mike’s takes the traditional sub to the next level DIANA ROJO-GARCIA It’s starting to feel a lot like picnic weather outside with the recent heat wave we have been experiencing in Minnesota, and what better food to take along on fishing trips and those spontaneous romantic dates than fresh-cut subs? Jersey Mike’s, located on Riverfront and Adam’s street in Mankato, is more than delighted to prepare your feast! Jersey Mike’s was introduced to Mankato in 2011 and has repeatedly won “Best Of Mankato,” and for good reason. This sub shop is proud of its fresh ingredients, morale, and history. Walking into either location, it reminds you of its origins starting in 1956 in Point Pleasant New Jersey. Each location stays true to its history of only serving the best food available. Even though most haven’t been to
the East Coast, the furnishing gives the right tone. There are photographs of sails, men enjoying the shore walking with their surf boards, and a sizable mural of a pinupesque woman on a boat. The choices can seem overwhelming at times, as there are a lot of options! The menu is displayed right above the meats and produce which show more than 20 subs. It features both hot and cold sandwiches. It can be as basic as a turkey and provolone sandwich or, if you’re feeling adventurous, more exotic options are available such as the Chipotle Cheesesteak (one of the best sellers). Each sandwich is also freshly sliced right in front of you and freshly frilled. Although subs can be customized to whatever you’d like to put on it, the best option for your cold subs is ‘Mike’s Way’. This is how they recommend for it to be topped to fully experience the East Coast
taste. It’s topped with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, red wine vinegar, olive oil and spices. The options are also incredibly flexible to fit special dietary needs. Any given sub on the menu can be turned into a wrap (priced the same as a regular) or a tub (a customized salad). Kid sized subs are also available that include a cookie and a drink. Sizes vary for the subs, too. Minis are available for cold subs at 5”, regulars at 7.5”, and a shareable size at 15”. For those who are very indecisive, any newcomers can ask the inviting and amicable employees what those weird sounding meats are. If you are still wary or hesitant, they will reassure that you pick the best sub to suit your palate. One of Jersey Mike’s best characteristics is definitely the employees. They want you to experience your food. When you first step into the store, you will
Photo by Diana Rojo-Garcia receive a warm welcome. They not only specialize in great food, but are great at bantering. Jersey Mike’s origins also lie heavily in supporting the community and customer’s will have the opportunity to contribute to one of their local fundraisers next month. “March is Month of Giving. And the Day of Giving will
At Highland Hills, our location is everything!
be March 29 with all sales going to LEEP. Jersey Mike’s foundation is built on giving to the community. We do over 8 fundraisers a year for local non profit groups,” said Chris Kunst, Operating Partner. Jersey Mike’s is open from Monday to Sunday and open their doors at 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

My wings were decocted and drenched in the sauces I ordered. They were very hot as if they just cooked and prepared it for me on the spot.
