BEST BAR: ROUNDERS 2ND PLACE: BLUE BRICKS

3RD PLACE: PUB 500

Rounders offers an all-around great night out RAE FRAME There are many great bars in the Mankato area, but there are many reasons Rounders Sports Bar & Grill has been selected as the best bar in Mankato this year. This local favorite has something to offer every hour of every day, from breakfast in the morning to late night entertainment. Opened in 2009, Rounders has grown in popularity among young adults and community members. Well-branded and well staffed, the bar has become one of the most popular downtown hangouts on weekends. For some, breakfast is an honored tradition, and get-

“Eggs are the special at Rounders, with a fry-up for meat lovers, veggie enthusiasts, breakfast beginners, and brunch champions.”

Photo by Trevor Cokley ting up in the morning might be a little bit easier if there’s a Rounders omelette and 16oz breakfast cocktails for just $2.50 until 1:00 p.m. Eggs are the special at Rounders, with a fry-up for meat lovers, veggie enthusiasts, breakfast beginners, and brunch champions. For others, the lunch hour does not allow enough time

to drive across town, and a downtown location like Rounders is the perfect place for an afternoon business meeting or quick bite to eat. Some of the unique dishes offered on the menu include a Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich, Fajita Wrap, Triple Play Grilled Cheese, and Spicy Creole Chicken Penne dish. But naturally, Rounders

would not have been voted the best bar unless it offered a superior nightlife experience. Weekends find a long line in front of Rounders, the bar lined with patrons looking to capitalize on late night happy hour from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m.,

Rounders also features one of the largest patio spaces in the downtown triangle, allowing patrons a chance to get some fresh air or have a quieter conversation without having to go through the long process of re-entry on a busy night. The new downtown renovations have allowed better visibility and more space for all downtown visitors, making a safer and more enjoyable experience every night of the week. Later in the evenings, popular tunes are played over speakers throughout the establishment, and patrons crowd the open areas to dance and enjoy the night. What makes Rounders such a nightlife hotspot is the fact that there is plenty of room to dance—something that some smaller locations cannot offer. Even during busy eve-

nings, the establishment is well-supervised and clean, promoting the kind of bar environment many people seek out on the weekends. Rounders offers both booth and high top seating that will suit any outing--from a ladies night out to a special date. Pool tables are located

in the side room, which are usually a little more open for those looking for extra elbow room. Party planners looking for a fun location in Mankato to host a party, dinner, or event should contact Rounders management. The building is suited to a wide variety of

BEST BREAKFAST: WEGGY’S 2ND PLACE: NAKATO

3RD PLACE: PERKINS

Close to campus, Weggy’s breakfast is close to our hearts GABE HEWITT In season 2, episode 20 of Parks and Recreation, Leslie Knope asks Ron Swanson, “Why would anyone eat anything besides breakfast food?” Swanson replies, “People are idiots, Leslie.”
You could rephrase that question and ask: Why would anyone eat anything besides breakfast food when Weggy’s exists? Weggy’s, located in University Square Mall on campus, is home to a number of inexpensive and signature breakfast entrees. The restau-

rant is open 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. and serves breakfast all day in addition to regular restaurant entrées during lunch and dinner hours. Weggy’s has that hometown diner feel and it shows. The staff is very friendly and you can taste the heart and passion of the cooks in each bite. It’s a very relaxing place to hang out with friends, take your family to or work on homework at. The menu is very eclectic, detailed, expansive and is sure to have something for your tastes.

Photos by Trevor Cokley

Would you turn down something called a Belly Buster? Make sure you wear your big pants for this one. The menu describes it as “a mound of hash browns, covered with sautéed onions, green peppers, tomatoes, melted cheese and bacon, topped off with two eggs, served with a side of toast.” You can eat MSU mascot Stomper’s favorite sandwich, appropriately named The Stomper Breakfast Sandwich. This features two scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon and sausage served on your choice of toasted bagel,

croissant or English muffin. If you’re a simple person who enjoys two eggs and toast, the Early Bird Special for $2.49 is just for you. You can be the maker when it comes to omelets at Weggy’s. For $9.49, you can choose three ingredients to include in your omelet with each additional one for 50 cents. These omelets are served with hash browns and toast. If you aren’t in the mood to make your own, try one of Weggy’s other omelets like the Mankato, What’s Up Doc or Hangover omelets. Pancake lovers are in for a

treat when they try Weggy’s famous buttermilk pancakes. These cakes are fluffier than a one-month-old puppy. You can even flavor them with blueberry, strawberry, banana walnut, bacon and flavor of the week options. The same type of fluffiness can be said about Weggy’s French toast. Weggy’s should be a breakfast staple for all MSU students, especially those living on or near campus. Even if you have time between classes, grab some of your friends and go get a taste of their magnificent breakfast.

continued from page 6 round, trained instructors lead participants through their workout in a mind/ body conditioning. The YMCA is also a fun place for children of all ages. From sports to aquatics, there are activities and programs available for preschoolers to teens. Parents can workout, stress free, with a free 90 minutes of childcare; after the first 90 minutes, a small fee applies per hour, per child. There are even special monitors in the Life Center where parents can view the Child Watch room. Children, boys and girls, from kindergarten to sixth grade, can participate in Youth Sports, which include basketball, soccer, floor hockey, volleyball, tennis, and much more. Emphasis is put on skill development,

rather than completion. The Y’s website states, “Winning is not the goal – playing is.” As such, kids are encouraged to have fun and learn skills in their area of interest. Overall, the YMCA is a great place to workout, have fun, and stay active. They are committed to their mission of building a health spirit, mind, body and social well being for all through their programs. The Mankato Family YMCA is looking to grow their facilities by renovating and remodeling to accommodate demand, as well as establish a presence on the east side of Mankato. Current and future YMCA members can look forward to this as well as the new skate park, which is scheduled to open in April.

Inside a customer will find bright colors and dozens of murals, whether it’s on a chair, booth or wall paintings are all around. The overall ambiance of the hometown eatery is spectacular. Sit down and open the menu packed full of every Mexican dish a person could dream of. Need a drink after a long day at work or school? Mazatlan offers several different margarita flavors, imported, draft, domestic and nonalcoholic beer, wine, mixed drinks and nonalcoholic beverages. Start off the meal with an appetizer. Choose from over 26 starter options, from queso fries to a fiesta sampler no choice will disappoint. After drinks have been ordered a fun and energetic waiter will bring out chips and salsa for the customers to eat while they wait to order. Another awesome thing about this amazing restaurant is the chips and salsa are free and waiters will bring as many baskets as the customers would like throughout the meal. There are also an abundance of meat/fish choices for the main dishes. Steak, seafood, chicken, pork and beef are all great options to choose from. New customers who are quite sure what to order can look under the “favorites” section of the menu and find Mazatlan’s famous taco salad, chiles poblanos, the grande special, soft or fried chimichangas and taquitos Mexicanos. Choose from 19 steak options. On the menu Mazatlan

also reassures customers that they only serve “Certified Angus Beef” and reiterate that it is always “tender, juicy and flavorful.” Go a little further down the menu and a customer can find 18 different seafood options ranging from shrimp cocktail to seafood alambre, which includes grilled scallops, shrimp and tilapia. There are 12 chicken options to choose from and four pork options. If a customer is looking for some sizzle they can order from the fajita section that offers 11 different hot and spicy options. More traditional menu options can be found on page five with burritos, enchiladas and combination plates. Each dinner plate ordered may include Mazatlan’s famous beans, rice, guacamole or an array of vegetables and choices of sauce. If a customer wants extra of anything they can order off of the “A La Carte” section for small but various prices. Other menu options include “Specials” which include detailed dinner items that may change from time to time.

Photo by Trevor Cokley The lunch menu offers similar dishes as the large dinner menu but about half as much food for half the price. The lunch menu is available Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. To top off the meal customers should check out the sweet treats that include flan, chimi cheesecake, Sopapilla and ice cream, fried ice cream and the most interesting of them all, a fried banana burrito.

Mazatlan also offers an array of specials throughout the week. If customers need to relax with a cool beverage they can get all draft beers for 1.75 to 3.99 Mondays 4-10 p.m. Tuesdays are mojito and bloody mary day for 2.99 and Thursdays is the ever-popular margarita night with 14 oz. drinks for 2.99. The family friendly restaurant also gives customers the option of being a member of the “Eclub”. When a person

is a member of this club they will receive special offers on food and drinks, the latest updates on the restaurant and news on special events that may be happening. Mazatlan will not disappoint, head over to the fun, festive and food filled place for more information and a good time!

With a wide range of pizzas, sandwiches, and other items, Pagliai’s is the place to be for gourmet pizza and scrumptious Italian cuisine.

With their astoundingly large number of toppings and pizzas, Pagliai’s has something for everyone. Their toppings alone cover a wide range of flavors, including the classic sausage, pepperoni, ham, and salami, to something a little more out there like pine-

apple, sauerkraut, shrimp, and jalapeno peppers. Pagliai’s substantial list of choices simply can’t be beat. If you’re looking for something a little different from the more classical offerings, try one of Pagliai’s gourmet specialty pizzas. BEST SUB SHOP: JERSEY MIKE’S 2ND PLACE: ERBERT & GERBERT’S

3RD PLACE: JIMMY JOHN’S

Jersey Mike’s keeps on serving up the best subs in town Always a bright, well lit restaurant, Jersey Mike’s has a décor all its own. Throwing back to the days of the Beach Boys, wood-side automobiles, and the surfing craze, it’s not uncommon for a surfboard or road map of America to grace the walls. But along with a cheerful interior, one of the best things about Jersey Mike’s is the friendliness of the staff. Employees are such fun to chat with while the ingredients for your sandwich are being sliced and prepared. Caution is taken to be sure that your order is exactly

the way you’d like it to be. Unlike many sandwich shops, Jersey Mike’s actually offers merchandise that customers may purchase online. There are some of us who love these subs so much we might just need to pick up a travel mug, sub cooler, or set of temporary tattoos (seriously!). Jersey Mike’s is located on Adams Street and Riverfront Drive in Mankato and are open Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Sunday Morning Services 8:30 & 11:00 Contemporary 9:45 College Fellowship Photos by Trevor Cokley RAE FRAME Every city needs a great sub shop—Mankato has two. The Jersey Mike’s franchise has been serving up deluxe sandwiches since the 1950s, highlighting a passion for fresh ingredients and friendly service. Walk into either of the Mankato establishments and you will be greeted by some of the best employees around as you’re offered an impressive menu of classic subs and new ideas. The sandwich menu includes hot and cold subs,

searching for a salad with a little attitude. The Chipotle Cheese Steak will be sure to warm you up during these cold winter months, and the Club Supreme is a deluxe take on the sandwich classic. Another twist is a little more selection on the size of your meal, patrons can choose between a 5” mini, a 7” regular, and a 14”-15” giant. The regular is the perfect size to split or solve a big appetite, while a giant may end up being your lunch, dinner, and breakfast! You won’t see these sand-

fresh ingredients cut just for your order almost anywhere. You will be asked if you want your sandwich “Mike’s Way,” which means “onions, lettuce, tomatoes, olive oil blend, red wine vinegar and spices; the founders of the company claim that it “is what differentiates Jersey Mike’s from the others.” Jersey Mike’s takes quality very seriously, and each sandwich is made with care by the staff at each location. A testament to this is that a full nutritional guide, food allergy and sensitivity document, and ingredient list
