JENNA PETERSON STAFF WRITER Once again, Mazatlan take first place for “Best Mexican Cuisine” in Mankato, surpassing all other Mexican restaurants in the city. The employee’s high energy, passion for culture, and enthusiasm throughout customer’s visits is enough to make anyone leave with a smile. Along with this, the immense variety of food will make sure nobody leaves hungry. The restaurant opened in 2003 and for the past 17 years the staff have continued to build a positive experience for all guests. Both the staff and cooks have created a relationship not only with the people who walk through the doors, but with Mankato as well. In order to cater to numerous people, Mazatlan includes a variety of food choices on their menu with appetizers, drinks, soups and salads, combinations, and dessert. The new kid on the block proves itself, already a Kato staple JENNA PETERSON STAFF WRITER They might have just opened this past fall, but that won’t stop Kato Pizzeria from giving out the best customer service, the freshest food, and the best environment for their loyal customers. After young entrepreneurs came up with the idea of a local, cheap, and healthier pizza shop close to campus for students and staff to enjoy, owners and managers Sanjay Esreepersaud and Nick came up with the idea of Kato Pizzeria. The dedication given into this restaurant compares to no other due to the fact that there is always an owner or manager at the shop to ensure that both customers and employees are happy. With a growing menu, Kato Pizzeria already includes a great variety of appetizers, toppings, sauces, and beverages for all to enjoy. To be more inclusive of people with different eating styles there is a vegan pizza option that includes dairy free cheese. To

Buffalo Wild Wings, a restaurant full of televisions, beer, and most of all, wings. Known for their vast array of sauces from Sweet Barbeque, all the way to Blazin’, the restaurant gives options for anybody’s taste of wings. While people often disagree on their preferred sauce, there is another debate that is constantly disagree on, and that between boneless or bone in wings. Boneless lovers revel in the ease of eating, while bonein eaters swear that the meat tastes better off the bone. Each type of wing has their own day of the week at the restaurant, offering buy one get one free. Wing Tuesdays is dedicated to the traditional wing, while Boneless Thursday for the de-boned coun-

FROM PAGE 6 terpart. The walls of the sports bar are loaded with signed local sports jerseys and flat screen TVs. Buffalo Wild Wings is extremely popular for students to patron during all sorts of sports games. Whether it is the Mavericks or the Vikings, students flock to watch the game on the giant circular television display in the middle of the restaurant. “I used to only go to

B-Dubs for birthdays and special events, but in high school, when they started boneless Tuesdays, it became a weekly affair”, said MNSU College of Business student, and Buffalo Wild Wings regular Ben Peter, about his time spent at the restaurant. “Also, the ranch there is top notch”. Despite the long distance from the campus, being located off Victory Drive near

Home Depot, students still make the journey to get their favorite wings from their favorite restaurant. Whether you are there for the game or the wings, Buffalo Wild Wings is a great place to sit back, escape, and enjoy the company of your friends. That time is, of course, enhanced by the top notch ranch and the delicious wings.

Boulder Tap House provides a nice environment and good eats for all

AMANDA FILREIS STAFF WRITER There are many things that Mankato has to offer for both visitors and residents alike. One of which is the restaurant called the Boulder Tap House. This is part of a franchise chain mostly owned by employees. It originally began in the city of St. Cloud before expanding to other cities including Mankato. This particular location has been open for 6 years and is actually the busiest location according to the manager. During that time, they’ve won many awards including Best Hamburger & Fries, Best Lunch, Best Appetizers, Best Beer Selection, and Best AllAround Restaurant spanning from 2014 up till now. One aspect to highlight their rewards program. If customers order 500 different types of beers, they win the prize of a members only jacket, a road trip, and tap handle. are hooked up to 6 cable boxes and can even display music videos while sports play at the same time. “It has a real cozy atmosphere with the fireplace by the bar and spacious layout” notes a customer. It’s not just the customers who feel this way. “It’s a great family friendly

environment. It’s high tempo but positive” notes Pat Mordhorst, an employee. They offer lots of local and domestic beers with the burger of the month being their specialty. “We make our food from scratch.” Reports the manager. This extra effort pays off when the food is

served. “These are the best onion rings I’ve had since I was a kid” stated by another satisfied customer. “I think they have good attention to details and great serving sizes.” All of these things and more demonstrate why this is the best restaurant in Mankato.

Walking in you are greeted by the wafting smells of burgers and fries, and sounds of multiple TVs playing in the background. The bright red ceiling catches your attention almost immediately and depending upon the time of the day the seats are filled with people enjoying a drink. The 507, named after the southern fifth of Minnesota’s area code, has been around for only a year and a half, so what is it about this fairly new bar that draws students to it over the handful of others? She stated, “the bar is just fun and friendly.” The 507, along with their indoor bar area has a lighted pato outside. The patio, while not currently in use because of heavy Minnesota snow and colder temperatures, is also a favorite among the bar patrons. Employee Linnihan explained that it opens back up whenever the weather permits it. The bar also hosts events.

On Mondays, the popular TV series “The Bachelor” is played throughout the bar and fans gather around with drinks and food to see who gets a rose and who gets sent home. While customers enjoy their time together making memories the employees at the 507 are enjoying themselves as well. Employee and MNSU student Kassidi Robbins explained she enjoys the connections that the staff is able to make with one and another and patrons. Robbins stated, “being that we are all college students ourselves we get to meet a lot of individuals in the student body and I think it’s cool we can all come to one place and socialize.” The 507, a place for sports, drinks, friends and ultimately a good time. Next time your downtown stop by for a taste of what students have deemed their favorite bar in Mankato.

MNSU student Bailey McNulty explains she likes the store because “they usually have more deals on wine than any other liquor store in Mankato.” Upon asking assistant manager Kevin as to why he

thought MGM won the best choice award he guesses “probably because we’re the biggest store in town, we sell anything you can think of.” Kevin continued explaining he thought it was “kinda cool” that MGM was voted the best liquor store because “when people think of beer or wine, they think of MGM.” MGM also is active on their Facebook page and website, where they post the current

deals, recipe suggestions, education on different types of alcohol, and much more. You can find them on Facebook @MGMWineAndSpiritsMN and at their website, w w w.mgmwineandspirit s. com. WEGGY’S

FROM PAGE 18 have a large group the space is mindfully set up in several sections so you can be close while not splitting up any families. While Weggy’s is indisputably the king of breakfast, don’t hesitate to try their many lunch and dinner options. There are also a variety of savory and filling breakfast dishes, like the Paul Bunyan snack platter and breakfast tacos. If you’re like me, you’ll love the many sweet treats that are available in meal form. Peanut butter cup pancakes, cinnamon swirl French toast, golden malted waffles… I’ve sampled them all and I’m here to say they’re fantastic. For those who like to spice

up breakfast with a little alcohol, look no further! Weggy’s has three different breakfast shots just for you. Let Go My Eggo is vodka and butterscotch schnapps with orange juice. Gooooooood Morning Mankato has Jameson, butterscotch schnapps, orange juice, and even a slice of bacon! Snap, Crackle, and Pop may not have orange juice (AKA the drink of the gods), but the maple syrup is a perfectly acceptable breakfasty substitute to combine with fireball and butterscotch schnapps. In addition to these breakfast shots, there are 17 beers on tap and several mixed drinks to choose from. But despite being located in a

college town and serving alcohol, I’ve never had an experience that was marred by drunk students. The atmosphere is good, and I’ve only ever encountered the rare breed of quiet, happy drunks there. So if you’re looking for a new place to do your brunch crafting workshop meetings, or need somewhere to ponder life quietly over a shot of alcoholic orange juice, or just want an excessively large stack of delicious pancakes, Weggy’s is the spot for you. And, if you’re a donut fanatic, make sure to check out their newly opened Krusty’s Donut Shop right next door. Reporter Archives

TOKYO

FROM PAGE 10 California can be very different from here in Minnesota, and often students can give us good suggestions.” said Lin. The restaurant is known for recreating classic dishes as well as only using fresh and high quality ingredients to better enhance your dining experience. “I would say the favorite menu items among college students are definitely the Chicken Fried rice and yum yum sauce. The athletes at MNSU especially love it.” Other menu favorites include the sushi roll, salmon avoca-

do, and volcano roll. Tokyo Sushi and Hibachi which has over 608 sparkling google reviews, is praised for its friendly service and excellent staff, cleanliness, and prices that can’t be beat anywhere in Mankato. It averages 4.5 out of 5 stars. “I do check the google reviews a lot,” said Lin. “They are helpful to me as a business owner, and to my employees. I use them as a tool to help me see where we need improvement, and I’ll often show them to the staff and talk to them about things we are doing well, and things

that customers want to see changed.” “It has always been my dream to own a restaurant. Mankato is a great place to work because it is a small and friendly town so I enjoy the people we serve. Another great part of working here is that it brings us staff together as friends and family.” Tokyo Sushi and Hibachi is now offering their online ordering services so those with a busy class schedule can place an order ahead of time, and pick up their takeout for better convenience.

BEST HAIR & NAIL SALON LIV AVEDA SALON & SPA

Thursday, February 13, 2020 2ND PLACE: GREAT CLIPS 3RD PLACE: FANTASTIC SAM’S

Liv Aveda provides the best service HELEN AKINYI STAFF WRITER Liv Aveda salon and spa is more than just what meets the eyes and I guess that is why the students voted for that in the best hair and salon in Mankato. The salon belongs to a couple by the name of Timothy and Tamera Tupy and I had the chance to speak to Timothy, I was so pleased with how patient he was with all the questions I had and how he answered them providing me with more than just enough information needed. “The name of the salon is actually Liv salon and spa,” he explained, “Liv from the word living, which for us meant living in a certain lifestyle and being in touch with the earth since that was the type of services we were aiming to provide, while Aveda is more of the mission, the partnership we have with them allows us to use their products as they

Caribou is a great place to get coffee, study, or just hang out LIDIA VASSAR STAFF WRITER I love Caribou Coffee. And to be clear, I’m not a big fan of coffee, at least not without a whole bunch of sickly sweet additions. But lucky for me, the great Caribou provides. Coffee (or Coffeeless) Coolers are probably the greatest frozen beverage ever created. There are several delicious flavors to choose from, including caramel, chocolate, spicy mocha, and my personal favorite, cookies and cream. Drinking a cooler tastes like drinking ice cream, but way better than if you just melted some ice cream (which I admit I’ve done to try and get that cooler fix). One of my favorite animals is the turtle. How does this relate to coffee, you ask? Well, the iced turtle mocha is my favorite non-cooler beverage at Caribou. Some people, definitely not my coworker Julia, have called me a heretic for preferring iced coffee to hot coffee. But whether you

like your caffeine hot, cold, or blended, Caribou has a drink for you. When my friend who hails from New York came to visit, the most painful part of their

departure was knowing that they would return to a land devoid of Caribous. “This is so much better than Dunkin or Starbucks,” Eden declared, solemnly sipping a pome-

granate açai tea latte, “I wish I never had to go home.” Meanwhile, I get to continue living less than a block away from two separate Caribou Coffee locations.

Jersey Mike’s offers great sub selection CAITA PIERSON STAFF WRITER Jersey Mike’s is a food staple here in Mankato. With two locations, one on Adam’s St. and the other on Riverfront, no matter which side of town you are on, a Jersey Mike’s sub is not far away. Open since 1956, The Jersey Mike’s Subs chain has spread from a humble New Jersey shop into a widespread craze. According to jerseymikes.com, there 1,687 locations within the United States and five beyond the US boarders. Jersey Mike’s offers a wide variety of subs from breakfast style to hot and cold subs. Subs come in various sizes: mini, regular, and giant. Every sub comes on fresh baked bread with high-quality ingredients. Many of the meats offered are advertised as antibiotic free or USDA choice. One of the most ordered subs is the #7 Turkey and Provolone. This sub comes with fat-free turkey and zero additives. Even vegetarians can find a suitable choice at this sub location through customization or simply ordering the

#14: The Veggie. This vegetarian sub contains swiss, provolone, and green bell peppers. “I enjoy their chipotle one” said Sarah Shogren, a MNSU sophomore. “I just really like it because it’s a nice hot sandwich that’s ready to go in a few minutes…. I love Jersey Mike’s. I would definitely recommend it to a friend.”

Not only is Jersey Mike’s a successful chain, it also has, as quoted from the official Jersey Mike’s website, “a culture of giving.” In fact, over thirty million dollars in charitable donations has been raised in the last nine years alone. This happened through their Day of Giving that occurs on the last Wednesday of March as well as their Wreaths Across

America non-profit partnership. From June 27th to July 11th, fundraising takes place in order to give wreaths to veterans’ graves during the Christmas season. More of their charitable acts can be found on their official website. To order one of these proclaimed subs, order online at

jerseymikes.com or visit one of the local shops right here in Mankato. Happy Eating! I enjoy their chipotle one where there is steak, a bunch of different vegetables on it. I just really like it because it’s a nice hot sandwich that’s ready to go in a few minutes. I love Jersey Mike’s. I would definitely recommend it to a friend.

CARIBOU

FROM PAGE 21 The one on campus here at MNSU is paired with Einstein Bagels, and makes grabbing a cup of coffee before class way too easy. If I’m feeling like doing a bit of studying off campus, then the Caribou in university square is perfect. It has the cozy living room feel, complete with comfy seating and a fireplace. I once met a poetry professor there for a meeting, so keep your eyes peeled for artists hiding out with their cups of coffee. And it’s not just customers who can appreciate the Caribou life, I talked to an

employee and he had some good things to say. “It’s a great place to study. It has a really cozy atmosphere surrounded by students and staff about the same age. The staff are nice, and it’s a super friendly and inviting place.” Credit for this quote goes to J, short for Just Another Caribou Fan. While I’m too introverted to last in a customer service position, if I was going to choose a coffee place to work I would absolutely pick Caribou. It really makes me, a humble Minnesotan, feel at home in its cab-

in-inspired interior. So if you’re looking for a hot cup of something to curl up with during the next snowstorm, stop by the customer-nominated best coffee shop in town. You’ll never guess how many coffees I drank while writing this article, but getting to lounge around in such a nice atmosphere sure encouraged me to take my time.

FROM PAGE 20 are our suppliers and all our products are from them,” he added by even providing me with Aveda’s website so I could look it up and get more details. They couple started the business 18 years ago, their main aim being able to provide quality services that was just more than about hair, Mr. Tupy explained how people would often drive all the way to the cities just for the services and they figured if they offered the services to people in Mankato with the quality they needed then most won’t have to do the long drives. With his wife cosmetology background starting the business made it a bit easier as they both knew what the niche was and what they needed to fill that up and the type of business they were about to get into. They have about 65 employees who offer different services from hair care to nail care and body care. He went ahead to explain how their employees have more than just a daily job that enables them to put bread on the table, they offer them

a higher education which enables them to have the education background for the job and get to even have the experience as they also get the required training. The employees also get to enjoy full benefits in the job like retired benefits and health care and so on. I asked Mr. Tupy about the highlight to him on the business, he didn’t hesitate for a second and said, “Well for me I’ll say just having so many repeating guests has been a great highlight over the years, I believe we offer great services and knowing that’s the top reason for having them often come back is more than enough.” Within the few minutes that I got the chance to speak to him I got to see how the business was more than just a business to him and his family. The Liv Aveda salon and spa is located in 1839 Adams Street Mankato, this being their second location after they closed down their first one in downtown Mankato long before. Reporter Archives
