BEST BREAKFAST

STUDENT CHOICE AWARD

WEGGY’S ON CAMPUS

WINNER

2ND PLACE: TANDEM BAGELS

3RD PLACE: HAPPY CHEF RESTAURANT

Weggy’s wins again with best breakfast By LILLY SCHMIDT Staff Writer The best breakfast in Mankato is hardly a competition – Weggy’s has been voted the best by the Student Choice Awards once again. Minnesota State University, Mankato second year student Chris Maher commented on the restaurant saying, “Weggy’s is kind of a chill place I guess to go to on campus. It’s a little more expensive than some other options, but they always have nice food and I like it a lot.” Weggy’s manager and MNSU graduate student Maddy Rasmussen explained, “We are a breakfast and bar & grill restaurant across the street in University Square. We offer breakfast all day as well as burgers, sandwiches, and drinks. It’s a super great place to hang out and enjoy food or drinks with friends.” The breakfast menu has a large variety of options. You can get all the classics, including omelets, waffles, and French toast, but Weggy’s also has some more fun creations if you’re feeling adventurous. The Homer Donut-Wich is a fan-favorite breakfast sand-

wich, made of scrambled eggs, cheese, and your choice of meat all served on a fresh glazed donut. However, if that option is a little out of your comfort zone, Maher suggests getting a breakfast burrito. “My favorite menu item is probably the breakfast burrito because I’m a sucker for breakfast foods. They have a really good breakfast burrito and I know a lot of other people like it too.” As for Rasmussen, “My favorite menu item is the fajita chicken wrap. On the breakfast menu I love the breakfast tacos.” She also shared popular picks, “The most popular items are the Bases Loaded omelet and the Cinnamon Swirl French toast. On the lunch menu the Moondog Burger is very popular.” Maher described the atmosphere of Weggy’s as being casual. “You see a lot of families, especially a lot of college students with their parents.” With Weggy’s being so close to campus, their student involvement is huge. Rasmussen explained, “We love working with MSU sports teams and showing our support for them. They order meals from

us all of the time and we are so thankful for that.” Rasmussen explained further, “A lot of clubs and groups on campus support us too, so I would say one of the coolest things about the job is how we can connect with campus life.” Although they’re best known for breakfast, Weggy’s also has a lunch menu, as well as a variety of malts and shakes you can enjoy any time of the day. Rasmussen said, Some of the specials at Weggy’s include the $5 Monday Burger and $6 quarter pounder burger on Thursdays anytime after 4 p.m. $10 Beer Bucket and Tuesdays $15 Burger, Fries, and Malt deal, or a Tuesday $4 Long Islands. Later in the week, Wednesssdays have $2 Coronas, and Thursdays after 4 P.M. get any 1/3 pound burger for just six bucks – something affordable for the average student. Maher encourages anyone who hasn’t been there to stop by, “Go get some good food.” Rasmussen also welcomes customers, saying, “Students should come to Weggys because we have amazing deals and a fun atmosphere to be

BEST SUB SHOP

STUDENT CHOICE AWARD

JERSEY MIKE’S

WINNER

2ND PLACE: JIMMY JOHN’S 3RD PLACE (TIE): POTBELLY SANDWICH SHOP & ERBERT & GERBERT’S

Jersey Mikes offers the best subs in town By LILLY SCHMIDT Staff Writer It’s no wonder Jersey Mikes Subs has two location in Mankato, because they are the student choice for sandwiches. Jersey Mikes employee Victoria Suk filled me in on why they might be the choice of the year. At their base, Suk said, “We offer sub, and then we also offer tubs, which are like salads. And we also offer wraps.” She continues, “It’s a healthier option than a fast food option like McDonalds or Burger King because everything is made fresh. We slice everything daily and it’s not more than like, ten dollars for a sandwich, so it’s not very expensive.” Although they offer no student discounts, employee Ryan Wood explained, “We offer military discounts.” He also shared that there are deals at

the bottom of your receipt that you can utilize. In addition to their deals, another thing Jersey Mikes is proud of is their donation month activates. Wood said, “We do a month of giving where we do a lot of donations.” Suk finished his thought by clarifying, “too charities and hospitals.” The event builds up throughout March, and last year the company was able to give over fifteen million to over two-hundred charities. Most funds went to hospitals, food banks, and youth organizations. For a complete list of the charities, you can go to their website. Last year, Minnesota Jersey Mikes locations funded The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They donated over $360,000. If you need some guidance trying out Jersey Mikes, Wood pointed out the most popular

items. “For cold subs, probably an Italian or a Club.” The Club sandwich has provolone, applewood smoked bacon, ham, turkey, and mayo. Or, you could order the Club Supreme, which has the addition of roast beef. If you’re not in the mood for a cold sub, Wood said, “and for hot subs, I’d say the Chipotle Cheese Steak probably.” The Chipotle is a spicy, hot sandwich made with grilled onion, pepper and topped with american cheese. Wood also shared that his favorite is, “The chicken bacon ranch. It’s got good chicken.” As for Suk, “I like the Italian. It come with like, all the meats.” The italian is a cold sub with ham, proscuittini, cappacuolo, salami, pepperoni, and provolone. You can pair any meal with a drink and bad of chips, or a baked goodie. They also pro-

vide catering options for big events. Additionally, they have a helpful allergen and nutritional menu on their website. Suk also shared a helpful tip for college students: the best sub to get if you’re hungover. She recommended, “Probably a hot sub, because they’re kinda greasy. The Big Kahuna – it’s got a lot in it. Extra

cheese, a lot of meat, and veggies.” As the menu says, “We don’t call it the Big Kahuna for nothing.” It has grilled mushrooms, peppers, onions, jalapenos, and steak. With so many options, Suk encourages, “Feel free to stop by.”

Opened in Mankato in 1994, Buffalo Wild Wings credits themselves as the “#1 place for all things sports creating legendary experiences.” Buffalo Wild Wings Marketing Manager Jen McCabe says that while fans of all ages enjoy Buffalo Wild Wings, more college students than ever are coming to the establishment. “[Students] have grown up knowing the brand with their families and appreciate the familiarity now at college to enjoy with their college friends,” said McCabe. For students, their most beloved deals occur every Tuesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, the deal is buy one, get one 50% off of their traditional wings. McCabe says that Buffalo Wild Wings varies from other businesses as the Mankato location is run by local owners who give back to several organizations. “The [local] owners have been very involved in the Mankato community and give back to those who have helped them succeed over the years,” said McCabe. “Several of those partnerships include Minnesota State University programs and groups such as the Maverick Athletics.” Buffalo Wild Wings offers a variety of wings. From traditional to boneless and even a cauliflower wings option, there are choices for everyone. With over 16 different flavors to choose from, there’s a multitude of combinations to choose from. BEST PIZZA

STUDENT CHOICE AWARD

PAGLIAI’S PIZZA

WINNER

2ND PLACE: POLITO’S PIZZA

3RD PLACE: DINO’S PIZZERIA

Pagliai’s Pizza Please! Best place to grab a slice By JEREMY REDLEIN Staff Writer In downtown Mankato, a large metal bull currently helps mark the location of Pagliai’s Pizza, home of the best pizza in town. Did I say best in town? How about the best in state, given Onlyinyourstate. com listed Mankatos’ Pagliai’s as having the best pizza in Minnesota. In any case, in an era of increasing political division, there is one thing we all can agree on, nobody beats Pagliai’s Pizza. Pagliai’s has a big presence in the community and a long history. The local Pagliai’s was founded in 1969 and has seen 3 different owners over the decades. It is one of the oldest restaurants in Mankato and the oldest pizzeria. Manager Cheryl Rueda said she started in 1975 back when she herself was in college and ultimately never left. Pagliai’s Pizza is a local icon. “People who went to school here and come back after 20-30 years come here when they’re back in town,” Rueda said. This can be seen by the fact that MSU Mankatos’ homecoming is their busiest day of the year with

around 400 pizzas sold in one day during Homecoming 2021 alone. The interior of Pagliai’s is homey and old fashioned. When you enter, an array of pizza boxes sits on the counter, each awaiting for a piping hot pizza to be placed inside. At Pagliai’s, the ingredients are freshly prepared each day and the pizza dough is made in house from scratch. They even stew their own homemade sauce using their own recipe. Don’t ask for extra-cheese, their pizzas come loaded with shredded mozzarella. Pagliai’s was started by 1955 by Sam Pagliai in Ames, Iowa. Cheryl Rueda said that she met Sam Pagliai in 1976/1977 when he visited Mankato. “He was a real Italian man with white hair,” Rueda said, recalling the visit. When asked, Rueda said her favorite pizza was the Palace, which is also a fan favorite. The palace comes with the mouthwatering combination of sausage, beef, pepperoni, onions and mushrooms. According to Luke Debace, they also have a really good garlic pizza. Sarah Johansen, a MSU student and Mankato na-

tive, says that she enjoys their cheesy bread and how much sauce and cheese they put on their pizzas. She says that she “recommends that anyone eat there. They’re amazing!” If you’re looking for something different, Pagliai’s has a long list of specialty pizzas as well as the option to make

your own. Their menu also includes poor boy sandwiches, pasta dishes, and salads. For those who don’t want to make the trek downtown, Pagliai’s does a lot of delivery in the community and to campus. For those who do want to dine in (they have a very cozy dining area) Pagliai’s

JEREMY REDLIEN • The Reporter has a daily deal in effect from 11am to 3pm where one can get a small 1-2 topping pizza and drink for $7.59 to $9.48. Those who purchase the Scarlet Saver or East Booster coupon books can also get $1.50 off coupons.

BEST COFFEE/TEA SHOP COFFEE HAG

WINNER

2ND PLACE: CARIBOU COFFEE

3RD PLACE: STARBUCKS

The Hag voted best coffee shop by students By SYDNEY BERGGREN Staff Writer When it comes to the best coffee spot in town, the Coffee Hag in downtown Mankato has held that title for the majority of the last decade. Now owning 7 Student Choice Awards in the last 10 years from the Minnesota State University, Mankato Reporter- along with its fair share of community choice awards from the Mankato Free Press, the Coffee Hag is a favorite of students and the Mankato Community alike. This award should come as no surprise to Mankato locals and visitors alike; the Coffee Hag is a well-beloved haven for all of its patrons, and is consistently full to the brim with customers at all hours of the day. The shop’s cozy, rustic atmosphere invites its patrons to sit down and spend time in the shop, with multiple seating options from plush leather couches to barstool seating at the windows facing Riverfront Drive. The Coffee Hag boasts a wide menu of both specialty and classic coffee drinks, along with non-coffee drinks such as teas, smoothies, Ital-

ian sodas, and frozen hot chocolates. They also have a variety of food items, from pastries to soups to an entirely vegetarian-friendly all-day breakfast menu. With a very open design, the Hag is perfect for students cafe-related needs. For students simply looking to get some studying done, there are tables all around the cafe to buckle down and finish up that massive paper. If what you are looking for is a place to simply sit and chat with a friend, look no further . The cafe is also a proud supporter of local artists, bringing in local art to hang on their walls, and a local musician to perform every week. It is one of the only places in Mankato that consistently allows for the enjoyment of live music in an all-ages, alcohol-free environment. The shop is openly in support of the LGBTQ+ community, as is shown in a significant amount of the art they have on their walls, along with the flags they have hanging in their windows. Both of the bathrooms in the shop, as well, are all-gender, with signs on the door that reads “Any person may use this restroom

regardless of gender identity or expression.” The shop is also a proponent of women’s empowerment, with owner Jennifer Melby-Kelley participating in women’s entrepreneurship panels, and leadership activities. She is praised as a business owner who demonstrates the success that caring for the community and one’s employees can bring. “I really like the Coffee Hag because the environment is super fun and the drinks are always great. Every time I go I get the Snow White drink and it never disappoints,” said MNSU sophomore Mackenzie Paulson. The Coffee Hag always puts a foot forward to participate in local events, including 2021 Mankato Pride, and the Old Town Fair that occurred last September to support local artists. While the world shifts and the pandemic keeps us on our toes, the Coffee Hag has remained an outlet, a haven, for many a student and community member. The Hag, located at 329 North Riverfront Drive, Mankato, is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the week.

BEST INDIAN/MEDITERRANEAN INDIA PALACE

WINNER

2ND PLACE: OLIVES MEDITERRANEAN REST.

3RD PLACE: MASSAD’S MEDITERRANEAN GRILL

The votes are in, India Palace chosen as best By SYDNEY BERGGREN Staff Writer The well-loved Indian restaurant India Palace has earned its spot once again Student Choice Award from the Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Reporter. Founded in 2003, India Palace has two locations- one here in Mankato, and another in Eden Prairie. The restaurant specializes in “authentic north Indian cuisine and attracts diners looking for a unique dining experience,” according to their website. The business focuses on quality and authenticity, determined to make every single dining experience enjoyable. They take great pride in receiving positive feedback, posting notes left by customers on their Facebook. India Palace has an extensive menu ranging in affordability, with 160 food dishes and 23 different alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. They describe their dishes as “as varied as the climate of India and… the people of India.” The restaurant features dishes that originate from many different regions of In-

dia, and they are careful to ensure that each dish is cooked and spiced to make the flavor and aroma the best and most unique they can be. “Our spices do not make the dishes hot because our very skilled chefs make each dish individually. We will be happy to make your dishes the way you prefer them, from mild to extra-hot,” is stated on the restaurant’s website. The menu is affordable, with appetizers ranging from $5-10, meals being $12-16, Baltis (a type of curry dish) being $16-18, and Tandoori Grills ranging from $10-45. Well loved menu items include their garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, and mango ice cream. “My favorite menu item from India Palace is probably the tikka masala. Naan is also a must as well. It’s some of the best food I’ve had in Mankato,” said MNSU student Christian Hickethier. During the height pandemic lock downs, India Palace supported itself by reopening and providing curbside pickup and non-contact delivery options. Now that restrictions have lifted, they are once again allowing dine-in options, along

with continuing pick up, with a newly implemented online order system through Clover. com. Throughout the height of the pandemic, India Palace also regularly provided meals from their kitchens to the Salvation Army. The restaurant often features deals for the holidays, including things like free naan after spending $25, or 10% off chicken tikka masala meals. India Palace, located at 1511 Madison Avenue, Mankato, is open from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. “It’s a great place to go and eat some good food with some great company,” said Hickethier. Among the variety of dishes Indian Palace is equipped with, one popular dish that many come to order is the butter chicken and chicken pared with the warm garlicky naan bread. “I just tried Indian Palace for the first time this year, I got the chicken tikka masala and it was really good and flavorful,” Micah Cooper, Senior at MSU, shared.

BEST ASIAN CUISINE TOKYO SUSHI & HIBACHI

WINNER

2ND PLACE: SHOGUN SUSHI & HIBACHI

3RD PLACE: CHINA STAR

Tokyo takes home the top spot for Asian cuisine By EMMA JOHNSON Staff Writer For students who are looking to find a new place to eat without breaking their bank accounts, look no further than Tokyo Sushi and Hibachi. Tokyo has been in the Mankato area for the last 10 years, serving up a wide menu that include appetizers, sushi rolls, fried rice and more. Manager Jack Lin says that a number of students from Minnesota State University, Mankato come in for the deals they have for college students “We used to have 50% off deals for dishes but after COVID-19, the prices for food went up,” said Lin. “[Currently] we have 30% off appetizers and sushi rolls.” When students venture out to eat, they usually tend to go to restaurants that offer greasy fast food. Lin says that Tokyo is a healthier alternative as to what students might originally go for. Besides sushi rolls, Tokyo offers soups, noodles, teriyaki and hibachi dinners, poke bowls and bento boxes. With meals made from daily fresh ingredients, students are guaranteed to find fresh flavors.

“There is not as much sugar in our food and we try not to deep fry our food. We try to keep it low-carb,” said Lin. “With our fish, we try to run it really fast, making it easy to keep fresh.” Lin mentions that besides their wide variety menu, the deals they offer to students are better than other restaurants in town. “We are cheaper compared to fast food and have a lot of dishes, especially combos, for under $10,” said Lin. These meals can be eaten inside the restaurant, or even be ordered for takeout, if students want to take their sushi to go. Tokyo offers a variety of combos for students to choose from. From 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, they offer lunch deals on their bento boxes, hibachi dinners, sashimi and sushi rolls and tempura. With both dine-in and take out options available, ordering from Tokyo is a pinch in the pandemic. Overall, Tokyo Sushi and Hibachi is a great place to go for lunch or dinner when wanting fresh, high quality food on a budget.

BEST MEXICAN CUISINE

STUDENT CHOICE AWARD

EL MAZATLAN MEXICAN RESTAURANT

WINNER

2ND PLACE: LA BAMBA MEXICAN TACO HOUSE

3RD PLACE: LA TERRAZA MEXICAN GRILL & BAR

Mazatlan remains the best place for Mexican “I go to Maz on Thursdays for the half off margaritas.” Angie Parades, a second year student at Minnesota State University, Mankato, expresses her excitement for the famous margaritas at El Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant. “I usually get strawberry and raspberry on the rocks, those are my favorite. I know a lot of people like peach too,” Parades stated. Parades is a fan of Maz for their delicious margaritas as well as their mouth watering Mexican cuisine. Mazatlan, located just off of Madison Avenue, is decorated inside and out to look and feel just like you are in an authentic Mexican restaurant. And it succeeds, because it doesn’t just feel authentic, it is authentic. Opened in 2003, the establishment has been dishing out burritos, tacos, and chimichangas for almost 20 years. “Maz has a nice atmosphere. You can tell it’s authentic and you can tell it’s been around for a while,” Parades pointed out. One big draw to Maz is the unlimited free chips and salsa that every table gets al-

most immediately after sitting down. Handmade every single day, there is nothing quite like the warm chips paired with the perfectly crafted salsa. Parades, however, lives by the queso found at the restaurant. “Usually when my friends and I go we get chips and queso as well as the salsa,” said Parades. “I also like getting carne asada tacos with rice and refried beans.” Whether you love your Mexican food with chicken, steak, seafood, or even without meat, Maz has you covered. Each entree is created to ensure everyone has something to eat that they’ll enjoy. If you can’t pick just one entree, there is also an a la carte option to customize your meal to your liking. Whether it is the vegetarian “Fajitas Vegetarianas” made from sauteed onions, bell peppers and other veggies, or the filling “Burrito Cancún” smothered with cheese sauce and filled with shrimp and chicken, you are sure to find something to fill your stomach. To end your meal there’s a list of traditional Mexican desserts to pick from. With

flan, sopapilla and ice cream, and chimi cheesecake on the menu you are sure to find something to kick your sweet tooth. And you cannot talk about Mazatlan without making reference to their famous margaritas. While many places in town offer margaritas, none do it quite like Maz. With several sizes varying from the typical margarita glass, all the way up to the “monster” size, which is about the size of a fish bowl. The margs come in tons of flavors as well, whether you are looking for the classic lime, or a sweeter, fruity flavor, Maz is the place for margs. If you’re not up for margaritas, there are various other alcoholic beverages to choose from. There is also a list of alcohol-free drinks to complete your meal. Of course, the food and drinks are great, but the cherry on top is the wonderful authentic feeling, stemming from the beautiful decorations and carefully crafted woodworking all around the restaurant. The bright and vibrant colors make it feel like summer, even in the coldest Minnesota winter.

BEST BAR

STUDENT CHOICE AWARD

THE 507

WINNER

2ND PLACE: ROUNDERS

3RD PLACE: SQUARE DEAL

The 507 voted student’s favorite bar in ‘Kato By MAXWELL MAYLEBEN Editor in Chief When it comes to students at Minnesota State University, Mankato, the numbers “507” mean something completely different than just a simple area code. For many students, especially those over the age of 21, The “507” is the name of their favorite bar in town. Located on the main drag known as “downtown”, right on Front Street, the bar is nestled right in between Pagliai’s Pizza and Ummie’s. The interior, decorated with bright orange, gives off a somewhat retro-vibe, while simultaneously feeling brand new. But one of the main draws for patrons is the bar’s extensive patio area. During the warmer months, students can enjoy a drink from the outdoor section of the bar, complete with lighting that sets a nifty ambiance and turf on the ground to keep the vibes immaculate. “We thrive on outdoor seating, we are a big patio bar,” said Isaiah Pitchford, a partial owner of The 507. While the bar is a happen-

ing place for people looking for fun at night, Pitchford talked about how they also utilize the day time to target a more mature demographic. “We try to balance between being a restaurant and being a bar,” said Pitchford, referring to The 507 being more than just a hotspot for nightlife. With an extensive menu during the day, the restaurant draws in crowds of families, working people, and students who aren’t looking for a crazy party, but instead, great food. The menu includes amazing appetizers such as Mac & Cheese Nuggets, fried pickles, and wings. If you are looking more for an entree though, the restaurant has you covered. Load up on a philly cheese steak, sliders of your choosing, or even giant hoagies called “Fat Boys”. But let’s say you aren’t into all of that. Let’s say that you are much more interested in the party scene and mingling with others your age while enjoying some drinks. The 507 is the place. “As the night gets later on Fridays, Saturdays, and even Thursdays, we try to give lots of drink specials, dim the lights, and make it a fun en-

vironment for college kids as well,” said Pitchford. With deals ranging from two for ones, all the way to fish bowl specials, there are so many fun ways to get a good buzz on. When it comes to deals, Pitchford aims to get college kids in the door. “Buy one get one half off fishbowls, Wednesdays we do two dollar beers, happy hour is buy one get one 99 cents,” said Pitchford “basically anything that can make a college kid raise their eye.” One great way to get a bang for your buck is by getting a beer tower to share with a couple friends. “You can get them for beer, margaritas, mimosas, long islands,” said Pitchford, “pretty much any cocktail or any tap beer.” When asked why students should come to 507, Pitchford had this to say; “This is one of the only bars that puts on events specifically for college kids,” said Pitchford, “we try to figure out what is a fun, unique event specifically for them outside of campus.”

BEST RESTAURANT BOULDER TAP HOUSE

WINNER

2ND PLACE: NOLABELLE KITCHEN & BAR

3RD PLACE: TAV ON THE AVE

Best Restaurant goes to Boulder Tap House By JENNA PETERSON Staff Writer If you’re a student at Minnesota State University, Mankato, then you have probably already visited The Boulder Tap House. With the homemade cheese curds and wide assortment of alcoholic beverages, this restaurant is a staple in the Mankato community. As a chain restaurant serving ten cities across Minnesota and Iowa, The Boulder Tap House is dedicated to bringing the best experience possible to all who dine in. The Mankato location sits on Saint Andrews Drive, an approximate ten minute drive from campus. General manager of three years Doug Hagen discussed the type of atmosphere he and the employees strive to bring to the restaurant. “We bring a fun, energetic atmosphere for all ages,” Hagen stated. Each day The Boulder Tap House offers a special that’s almost too good to be true. Hagen explained further what these deals look like. “We don’t do anything special for game days, but we do have our weekly spe-

cials. Every Monday we do $8 beer flights. Tuesdays we call it “Tea Tuesday”, where we have $4 long island iced teas. Thursdays we have $1 off margaritas and $3 Coronas,” Hagen stated. The restaurant also offers both daytime and nighttime happy hour specials. On Monday through Friday from 3-6 p.m. there is $1 off taps and rail drinks, along with half off select appetizers, excluding the wings. Every day from 9-1 p.m. there is $1 off taps and rail drinks and $3.50 domestic taps. For the food, there are half off select appetizers, and 7 piece boneless wings for $4.50. Homemade cheese curds aren’t the only delicious food offered at this well-known restaurant. This tap house is also widely known for their array of burgers to fill all taste bud needs. The Cheese Curd Burger included a fresh burger patty with Swiss cheese, Burger Co. sauce, and the monster cheese curds. Other popular specialty burgers include the Stuffed Tap House Burger, The Defibrillator Burger, and the Brown Sugar and Smoked

Cheddar Burger. For the people who look to eat on the healthier side, you can substitute most burger patties with a chicken breast, turkey burger, or veggie burger for $1 extra. Pair with a side of your choice, and you’ve got a perfect meal. If burgers aren’t your thing there’s a wide assortment of specialty sandwiches to choose from. One classic and popular choice is the Pulled Pork Sandwich. Other sandwiches listed ate the Chicken Avocado Sandwich, Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich, and the Grilled Turkey and Bacon Melt, which all can be paired with your favorite side. While dishing up excellent food is a large component to the restaurant, Hagen mentioned that the employees are an essential aspect to The Boulder Tap. “We are huge in employee morale. It’s just fun, we want everybody to feel like family.” The restaurant and staff are always thankful for the community they serve. Hagen expressed this with, “We appreciate the community and we like to give back as much as we can.”

BEST LIQUOR STORE MGM WINE & SPIRITS

WINNER

2ND PLACE: JOSEPH’S LIQUOR

3RD PLACE: CORK & KEY

MGM Wine & Spirits wins 10 years and counting By MAXWELL MAYLEBEN Editor in Chief For many, college and booze comes hand in hand. What better place for the student population to choose as their favorite liquor store in the area than the biggest? MGM Wine and Spirits has once again been chosen by the campus community as their favorite place for all of their alcohol related needs. With several locations all over central Minnesota, MGM is known for having a wide selection to help facilitate any plans one might have. Whether it is tailgating for the football team, partying at Spring Jam, or even staying in, students consistently turn to MGM to shop for their alcohol. If it is wine you are looking for, at this store, you can find anything from a sweet and fruit flavored bottle of mos-

cato, all the way to a dry and vintaged merlot. If you are looking for that perfect bottle to pair with a romantic Valentines Day dinner, you are sure to find it at MGM. For those looking for a case of cold beer, look no further than the massive beer stacks near the coolers. Often reaching almost all the way to the ceiling, there is rarely a short supply of “Mich Golden”, which is an essential when in a Minnesota college town. That isn’t even mentioning the massive supply of liquor, ranging from an inexpensive handle of vodka, all the way up to high quality bourbon. In the odd chance that the store doesn’t have what you are looking for, they are often able to order what you are looking for. “We do our best to try and order,” said Greg Dembouski, the owner of the location, “since we sell so much, we get

the first crack at it.” Dembouski, a Mankato local, also owns and operates the locations in North Mankato as well as St. Peter. MGM has won best liquor store for quite some time, and it remains on top due to it’s continuous cycle of discounts. “We’ve been named the number one for 10 years in a row,” said Dembouski, “we have weekly and monthly deals, and new items weekly as well.” When asked about the success of the Mankato location, Dembouski said, “I think we have the best selection, and more choices is good.” MGM Mankato is conveniently located right off of Victory Drive. The location in North Mankato can be found on Commerce Drive, and the location in St. Peter can be found right off 169.
