Scarlets look to remain on top despite losing talent KYLE RATKE

Coming off a successful season and a state tournament appearance, most think that the Scarlets might enter a year of rebuilding. It's seldom that a team returns leaders to bring them back to the promised land.

Mankato West was the No. 1 seed going into the tournament but would eventually lose in the championship game to Washburn.

The Scarlets won the opening game against Spring Lake Park 72-70.

Graduated twins Aaron and Mike Richter combined for 30 points and shooting guard Ray Teachout made some big threepointers down the stretch.

The Scarlets also won the state tournament for football last season, so they know what success is about.

"Success breeds success," said head coach Tom Boone in an interview with Star Tribune last year. "You cannot underestimate the importance of what these kids accomplished in football. They believe in themselves and they believe in the system."

Talk about Deja Vu. The Scarlets are competing

in the state tournament currently (at time of production) and it wouldn't be out of the question if they were to make another run at the championship.

This is remarkable, especially in high school when team's generally graduate talent, instead of build a program of it.

Well, the Scarlets basketball team would rather start a powerhouse than rebuild.

The roster hasn't been set yet, but Mankato West is looking to bring back six seniors.

Returning six seniors is a plus for the team, but the negative might be losing seven seniors who defined the team last season, including Teachout who is now a redshirt freshman quarterback for the Minnesota State Mavericks.

The Scarlets were 29-2 last season, winning most games by double-digits.

Their only losses came to Eden Prarie in the second game of the season and to Washburn in the state tournament championship game.

It's expected that Preston Brunz, Tyler Nibbe, Mac Gulke, Ethan Tramp, Matt Briggs and Jonny Paulsen will make up the senior group.

This group certainly has a task to live up to after losing

remarkable seniors.

West loses the Richter brothers, Teachout, Derrick Cattrysse, Alex Hasse and Andrew Sathoff.

Head coach Tom Boone doesn't think this will be a problem.

"Playing together is probably the one thing we do better than most teams," Boone said.

"You can tell here that players really accept their role and I think that sets us apart. You don't see that with many teams in high school basketball."

The football season helps West build the team aspects and gears the basketball team up.

West won the Big 9 Conference last season by five games.

The closest team to the Scarlets was Austin, who finished with a 13-5 record.

West outscored opponents last season by an average of 20 points and the rivalry between East has turned into a one sided affair, as West defeated East 75-24 last season on the road.

While hopes are high for the Scarlets this season, West will need to find leaders to replace last year's team and buy into West's and Boone's team concept.

Boys looking for scorer, girls for depth JOSH BERHOW

Two years ago there was Ricky Litchfield and Corey Leivermann.

Last year there was Andrew Bruggeman. But this year there’s no clear cut answer to what offensive talent will lead the Mankato West boys hockey team.

“We’re not going to have that No. 1 scorer,” said West head coach Curtis Doell. “I think we’re going to have to score by committee, which is a good thing if everybody is able to contribute.”

The scoring by committee will be a change for the Scarlets, just like their new head coach. Doell, who’s been an assistant for West since the 2000-01 season, takes over for Ken Essay in his first season as the Scarlets’ head coach.

Doell doesn’t think the Scarlets will look much different under his lead, though.

“It’s going to be pretty similar,” he said. “Working with Ken for nine years we have always kind of coached by committee and worked together. There won’t be a whole lot of changes.”

While Doell says the style of play won’t change too much, he said West might focus a little more on puck possession and not dumping and chasing as much.

Matt Campbell, a senior

defenseman, and Drew Weber, a forward, are the only two players remaining on the roster who were members of the Scarlets’ state tournament team from two years ago. Both are captains, and Campbell was one of West’s leading scorers from last year. Doell said he is also looking for a good year from Jace Leiferman.

Jake Kaufman, who was the backup to graduated Adam Trautman last year, will start in goal.

Zach Fox, a sophomore, will serve as the backup.

The Scarlets have 41 players trying out for this year’s team, and are still waiting for a handful of players to finish the football season and put skates on.

“Once we get those guys back we’ll start putting together some lines and some combinations,” Doell said.

The Scarlets might lack a big-time scorer this year, but Doell is hoping a larger number of legitimate scorers can translate into some wins as well.

“It’s going to be different,” Doell said. “Every line is going to have to contribute and every player is going to have to contribute.

We’re going to rely on everyone, and that’s where we’re going to get the brunt of our wins from.”

Girls hockey The Mankato West girls hockey team might not have as much depth as it has in past years, but the finished product might be better in the long run.

The Scarlets lost defenseman Amber Ostoff, starting goaltender Jennie Maes and last year’s second-leading scorer Alyssa Black, but — according to new head coach Cara Samuelson — should put a more productive top-two lines on the ice.

“Our second line is much better than last year,” Samuelson said. “They worked together all summer long in a bunch of different leagues, so we’re definitely stronger there this year.”

The second line will consist of Melissa Austad and Hanna Rehome on the wings and Amanda Probach at center. Probach is the Scarlets’ lone senior and will be looked upon as a leader for West.

“She’s a great kid and has really stepped into that role,” Samuelson said. “She’s kind of a mother hen for all of our young kids.”

The senior scored two goals and assisted on another in West’s 6-0 season-opening win against New Ulma Nov. 12.

The Scarlets — who lost in the section finals to Hutchinson last season — return last season’s top scorer in junior Katy Kvasnicka, who had 57 goals and already added four against New Ulm. Callie Looft and Vanessa Lloyd will join Kvasnicka on the Scarlets’ top line.

Samuelson doesn’t think losing Black on the top line will hurt Kvasnicka’s scoring, though.

“It just means Vanessa has bigger shoes to fill this year and I think she’ll definitely step into that spot,” she said. “But it always hurts to lose someone who scores 60-plus points for you.”

full-time this season after splitting with Maes last year. Jana Christensen, a captain, and Amber Oachs will also play a big role on the blue line. Samuelson called Christensen the Scarlets’ “go-to D-player.”

Numbers have limited West to basically two full lines and five defensemen. Julia Snelson, an eighth grader, will rotate into the second line.

“We’re going to need to be a little scrappier this year,” Samuelson said. “We know what we’re going to get from Kvasnicka, she’s going to score goals regardless, but everybody else is going to get their opportunities and they’re going to have to finish too.”

Scarlets hoping to make a run with youth KYLE RATKE

Graduating all five starters and 10 players total would put a damper on most programs. But the Mankato West girls basketball team hopes they can still compete at a high level even without the lack of experience and leadership.

Last season the Scarlets finished 15-12 overall and 10-8 in the Big 9 Conference which was good enough to have them finish fourth. Even with new players, head coach Dianne Johns doesn’t think reaching .500 is far-fetched.

“Being a rebuilding year, our goal is to get back to .500,” Johns said. “I have a lot of good talent and good work ethic coming back. I look forward to a really fun season.”

The rosters haven’t been set yet, but after tryouts, it’s expected that junior forward Brianna Christiansen will be the team leader and will ultimately play a major role in whether or not the Scarlets have a successful season.

Christiansen realizes this is a young team, but doesn’t see the lack of varsity experience to be a problem.

“One goal of ours is just to continue to play together as a team,” Christiansen said.

“Most have us have been playing together for a while now. We just want to continue the team aspect.”

There is a long list of players that could contribute this season, but only three that photo from Sport Pix had varsity uniforms last season.

Abby Rothenbuehler is one of 10 seniors that graduated last year for the Scarlets.

Junior Dani Sukalski is a junior guard that is very versatile and part of a great team-

oriented group of juniors.

“Dani always puts the team first and is almost too unselfish,” Johns said. “Clarissa Ahlquist is also a very quick guard and a good defensive player. She has an amazing first step.”

If the Scarlets hope to place in the topfour in the conference, they will need to surpass Austin, Rochester Century and Rochester John Marshall, who finished third, second and first respectively last season.

Another junior that is expected to contribute is forward Emily Doyle who is a post player that will be relied to do some scoring.

Guard Morgan Klaustermeier could see some time as the starting point guard for the Scarlets, but whether or not she can stay healthy will be a big factor.

“She sees the floor really well,” Johns said. “She has been injured. Last year she got healthy and played really well. Hopefully she’ll be our floor leader.

The girls will find out what competition is all about. There are currently 11 girls going out for the team, but only eight will make the squad.

Chances are the girls with the most playing experience will make the team. The players that West have relied upon in the past won’t be there anymore.

“It’s different. We relied on those seniors quite a bit,” Christiansen said. “We need to step it up now. We want to get through sections and win some of those nail biters together as a team.”

Coming off of a 5-17 record, the Mankato East Cougars boy's basketball team is ready to show a tough Big 9 Conference that they are ready to turn things around.

East graduated just three seniors and though the rosters aren't set yet, they are expected to bring back 10 seniors, including center Sam Onsomu, who was All-Conference last year, along with guard Alex Welter who was an honorable mention.

"They will definitely be the first two look for, but (forward) Ken King and (guard) Jordan Benesch will add athleticism, intelligence and great competitiveness to the mix," said head coach Joe Madson. "They are our four captains and leaders."

The two other seniors are guards Brady Dose, who is an excellent shooter and solid defender along with James Moore, who is a quick and competitive player.

East finished last season second to last in the conference standings, beating out Albert Lea who went winless in Big 9 play.

The Cougars five wins last season came against Albert Lea (2), New Ulm, Century and Faribault.

One of Madson's goals is to win some of those close games.

"A goal would be to double our win total from last year," Madson said. "We only won five games, so even getting triple the wins should be a goal."

This is a reasonable goal, especially with the amount of experience the Cougars are bringing back. The only thing against them, is that have to play Mankato West twice in the year.

West took second place in the state tournament, and even with losing key players, expect to have similar results.

The cross-town rivalry has been very one-sided lately as West blew out East in both games last year.

The level of importance for the game doesn't change for the Cougars though.

"It's always important," Madson said. "Especially because it is not only cross-town rival, but also a conference and section opponent. Those game always have a lot riding on them because of all the factors.

We were blown out twice last year and I know our returning players want to change that."

With consistent guard play from Welter and King along with a post presence in Onsomu, it wouldn't be too far fetched for the Cougars to potentially climb the Big 9

The Cougars have put time in over the summer to make sure that the group of seniors is a close knit group that will have confidence and win those nail-biter games.

Any high school basketball team goes into the season without knowing much about their squad and has a lot to prove, whether they are a defending state champion or a five win team like East.

The motivation might be there for the Cougars, and as Madson stated earlier, triple the amount of wins, putting them to fifteen, is a reasonable goal for the Cougars.

This would put them into the upper-echelon of teams in the Big 9.

Madson has seen a lot of teams and knows that although the odds might be against them, he thinks this Cougars team is special and has something past teams haven't had.

"Each team I have coached takes on a little different personality and what we lacked last year was confidence, the ability to close out games along with ball handling skills" Madson said. "Our confidence and ball handling have improved over the summer and we will have to see about the winning tight games. Scoring, scoring, scoring.

This is the focus of the Loyola girls basketball team this 200910 season.

With practices just getting underway at area high schools, Loyola is hoping to improve last season’s record.

“Obviously, we hope to improve on our final record,” said head coach Kari Koester.

“We need to be more balanced on offense by improving our inside out game.”

Leading the team is senior shooting guard Kristy Rotchadl. Last season Rotchadl received All-City and All-Conference honors. Three-sport athlete and All-Conference honorable mention Lizzy Karp is also expected to have a big impact on the team as she has played on the varsity since her sophomore year. Other players expected to see substantial playing time are senior point guard Taylor Dosh, center Laura Kottschade, junior forward Hannah Gaspar, guard Miranda Wolf, and sophomore forward Megan Hendrickson.

“We finished last season with eight wins and only graduated two, one of which was a starter,” Koester said.

“If we can get healthy and stay healthy, we could have a nice season.”

So far five players are out due to injuries and illness.

“Our goals are to finish .500 in the conference and play for sub-section championship,”

Koester said. Last season the Crusaders were knocked out of the playoffs by Martin Luther.

The Gopher Conference is expected to very competitive and consists of AA schools such as NRHEG, Springfield and St. Clair, along with Martin Luther. Loyola is an A school.

On Nov. 28, the Crusaders scrimmage against Mountain Lake-Butterfield-Odin (MLBO). The season officially begins on Dec. 4 with a home game versus Martin Luther.

Boy’s For the Loyola boys basketball team, a conference championship and making it through sections are the main goals for the 2009–10 season.

After finishing 19-8 and second in the Gopher Conference last season, the Crusaders return seniors Bo Schmidt, Mack Douglass, and Toby Turbes.

Lost to graduation were top scorers Jackson Bartlett, Joe Fink, and D.J. Wesely. Last season Turbes averaged four points per game.

With the majority of the team new to the varsity level, the team will be focused on working together to be successful.

Bethlehem Academy and Blooming Prairie will be tough competition for Loyola.

The Crusaders open their season on Dec. 15 with an away game versus NRHEG.

The bad news for the Mankato East girls basketball team is it lost many of its interior players to graduation.

The good news is the Cougars have just about everything else back.

Sarah Brozik and Taylor Homan are back as East’s top two scorers from 200809, averaging 14.1 and 13.8, respectively.

“I drove the ball a lot last year and they’ll probably collapse on me a lot so I’ll just have to look for the open shot or the open player,” Homan said.

“As guards, we’re are quick and we’re really getting the hang of pushing the ball up the court and that’s going to be huge for us offensively,” Brozik said.

Homan and Brozik, starters since sophomore year and this season’s co-captains, were East’s top two in assists (59 and 58, respectively), steals (54 and 48) and return as the top rebounders from last season (90 and 88).

They, along with everyone else playing for East, will have to pick up the slack on the glass after Maddy Ziegler graduated in the spring.

“We’ll probably play more zone than we’re used to,” Barger said. “For a Big Nine Conference team we’re pretty small so we’ll have to play good perimeter defense and not let the ball inside.”

Ziegler, now jumping for the Winona State track and field team, finished among the top in the state with 264 rebounds last season (10.2 rpg) and ended her career in East’s top-ten for rebounding.

Ziegler wasn’t extremely tall for a forward (5-foot-9) but had the experience to get the job done.

Height and experience in the post are lacking this season.

VALLEY CONFERENCE BOYS BASKETBALL

The Valley Conference has been represented in the state tournament since the 2005-06 season and a few times by more than one team. This trend should continue as teams have reloaded and tip-off is only a week away.

Conference powerhouses Maple River, Martin County West (MCW) and Granada Huntley East Chain (GHEC) have collected the conference championship the last four seasons, including a class A state title last season by GHEC. “I think the favorite is

probably MCW if I had to choose a preseason champion," said GHEC athletic director Terry Bentele.

The conference hosts 12 teams: three class AA teams — Maple River, MCW and Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, plus nine class A squads — AldenConger, Cleveland High School, GHEC, Le Center, Madelia, Martin Luther, Nicollet, Saint Clair and Truman.

Since 2004 Maple River has the 17th best record in the state, 122-28, and MCW falls in at 22 with a 107-28 record and GHEC is right on their tails slotted in at

23 posting an 105-29 record.

Last season’s runner-up to the last spot in the conference Martin Luther is third from the bottom with a abysmal 18-114 over the four-year stretch, all according to Minnesota-Scores.net.

GHEC’s perfect season makes it the target that everyone’s shooting at and will be tested as it lost its top four scorers.

“We are in a rebuilding year,” Bentele said. “We lost a lot of good players and only have two on this year’s squad but our junior and sophomore classes are very talented.”

Junior Tanner Nawrocki and

senior Mason Teachout will be relied upon as the go-to-guys for the class A defending champs. As a sophomore Nawrocki averaged 5.1 points, 2.44 assists and 2.44 rebounds a game.

Maple River and MCW are looking to reclaim glory, but also trying to fill some wholes left by departing seniors. Maple River watched six members of its squad turn the tassel, as MCW sent 10 graduates off.

A newcomer in the group of giants is the 4th-place finisher in the conference last season, Saint Clair. It donated five seniors to the college life but is still a

senior-heavy squad, welcoming 10 juniors back from a 15-13 team.

The eight other teams seem to be a pack of “almost-theres” and “never-gonna-happens.”

On a majority of these teams, with a lot of small towns, the enrollment just isn’t there and the ability to compete with teams that are a class above is becoming increasingly harder. The exception last season was GHEC. The conference opens up Monday when Madelia, Maple River and MCW hold their first practice of the 2009-10 season.

Similar to the men of the Valley Conference the women are fairly top heavy with regards to team’s dominance during conference play.

The conference plays party planner to 12 teams: three class AA teams — Maple River, Martin County West (MCW) and Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial — plus nine class A squads — Alden-Conger, Cleveland High School, Granada-Huntley-East Chain (GHEC), Le Center, Madelia, Martin Luther, Nicollet, Saint Clair and Truman.

MCW, GHEC and Nicollet have all captured the conference title in the last four years, twice

by GHEC.

“The girls' side of the Valley Conference is wide open,” said GHEC athletic director Terry Bentele. “Nicollet, MCW, Lake Crystal; really any team could potential win the conference.”

Last season the conference saw a dominance it has never seen in girls basketball. MCW posted a conference record of 15-0 and overall record 21-4.

After capturing their first Valley Conference title the Mavericks were poised and ready to make a state tournament run, when they were bounced in the second round of section play by state bound Pipestone Area School.

Like many schools that have successful seasons, MCW watched as more than half its squad graduated, while

conference rivals have developed players waiting in the wings ready to capture a 2009-10 title.

GHEC welcomes back seven from last year’s ten-player squad, Lake Crystal-Wellcome (LCW) lost only two seniors, returning 10 underclassmen and Nicollet after a late-season push, only lost two of its 11-player team.

Unlike the boys side, the conference has not seen a state appearance since GHEC was runner-up to Fulda in the 200506 season. A conference that has struggled to make an impact in playoff play has a few teams that potentially could make a push this year.

“I think we have a good chance,” Bentele said. “But MCW is always tough.”

GHEC dominance has been noted by the conference as it has posted an overall record of 88-18 since 2004, which ranks 15th in the state. The next closest is Nicollet sitting at 73rd in the state with an overall record of 75-34, according to MinnesotaScores.net.

The 2009-10 season begins Dec. 1.

Madelia hosts Le Center, MCW will host Mountain LakeButterfield-Odin, Martin Luther Southwest Star Concept and Nicollet welcomes Minnesota Valley Lutheran to their photo from Sport Pix home.

LCWM is a team that could surprise the conference.

When the Mankato East girls hockey team lost 5-3 to Albert Lea on Nov. 12, the Cougars took the defeat as a sign of improvement.

“We’re definitely with that team and we could’ve had that game,” said sophomore wing Sarah Biesterveld. “Games will be a lot closer. No 12-1 games like there were last year.”

That was the final score when East fell to the Tigers last season but the Cougars vowed they won’t fall by that big of margin in 2009-10.

“Whether we’re winning or losing, we want to see a narrowing of the scoreboard,” said East coach Nate Fuller.

Anderson is East’s starting goalie for the second straight season after making the transition from skater to goalie two seasons ago as an eighth grader. After a freshman season that had its struggles (East was outscored 153-46), Anderson is more seasoned and has the chance to prove herself.

“The transition was hard at first but it got a lot easier as the year progressed,” said sophomore goaltender Melany Anderson, who averaged 31 saves per game in 200809 including a 58-save performance against Winona.

“I improved a lot. The coaches really helped me.”

“(Anderson) had some really good improvement last year and she looks better now than she did a year ago,” Fuller said.

Offensively, the Cougars need to give Anderson some goal support and 1.7 (last season’s average) goals per game will not be enough.

“Savannah Quandt is definitely one of our leaders,” said Biesterveld, who had the team’s second most assists (five). “She’s always working hard.”

Quandt – a freshman forward who scored 13 goals with seven assists last season – netted a pair of goals and assisted on another in the season-opening loss to Albert Lea. “We’re looking at (Quandt) to be a big goal scorer,” Fuller said. “Mariah Kragh is new and we’re hoping she can contribute goals too.”

Hailey Colbrunn was second on the team in goals (five) and points (nine). Bobbi Sellner and Maddie McCarger each scored four goals last season.

The Cougars were an inexperienced team last season and this season has zero seniors, five juniors and nine sophomores. The other 10 are freshmen or younger.

“The girls really worked hard in the offseason. You can see it on the ice that we’ve improved from last year,” Fuller said. “Last year the

team was mostly eighth and ninth graders but that year older is going to be a big difference too.”

Fuller said “narrowing the scoreboard” is, in essence, first on East’s list of goals.

The players set an offensive benchmark to finish with 50 more goals than last season and allow around 45 less goals.

If the Cougars hit those targets, East’s ultimate goal of hosting a first round playoff game and playing in the section semifinals will be a little more attainable.

“We want to go far in sections and it’s within the realm of possibility,” Fuller said.

Boys Hockey East boys hockey (tack this on the end of the girls story) The East boys will also try to turn the corner this season after a trying 2008-09 season.

The Cougars finished 4-21 last season and were outscored 173-85.

On the bright side, East swept Big Nine Conference opponent Austin (9-4 and 7-2) in the season and also

got wins against St. Peter/Le Sueur-Henderson/Le Center/ Montgomery-Lonsdale (6-5) and Waseca (8-3).

East returns 11 seniors to the lineup this season and opens the season against Holy Family Catholic Dec. 1 in Victoria.

So much for parity.

The Gopher Conference standings for boys basketball last season reflected a sharp divide between its schools.

Four schools finished with 19 or more victories, including Bethlehem Academy, which coasted to a 28-3 record overall en route to a visit to the Class 1A State Championship tournament.

The drop after fourth place was steep, however. The next best teams, United South Central and New RichlandHartland-Ellendale-Geneva, posted 11-16 and 11-17 records, respectively. Three other teams finished with no more than five victories.

According to WatervilleElysian-Morristown coach Jeff Wagner, however, some changes could be on the way.

He believes that, entering this season, NRHEG and USC are the favorites to win the conference, with Blooming Prairie (20-6 last season) and Mankato Loyola (20-8) still in the mix.

And by the way, Wagner likes his own team’s chances as well.

“If everything works out perfect, we could climb into the upper part of the conference and section,” Wagner said, citing both WEM’s depth and experience.

NRHEG and USC both return a number of starters from

last season. And with six seniors returning, including 6-foot, 6-inch center Cory Camerer and 6-foot, 5-inch forward Tyler Firme, NRHEG is blessed not only with experience, but with height.

WEM has some weapons of its own.

The Buccaneers have lost their top three scorers from last season’s 19-10 squad to graduation, but a number of other players are still returning.

Seniors Tyler Dillon and Reid Roemhildt – described by Wagner as the team’s best defender – are both back. So is junior Conrad Masberg and junior Jordan Gregor, who led WEM in rebounding last year.

While Bethlehem Academy has lost some players from last year’s team, Wagner expects them to contend in the Gopher Conference as well.

Meanwhile, the bottom three teams in the conference last season – JanesvilleWaldorf-Pemberton, Randolph and Medford – will all try to improve on dismal 2008-09 seasons. The three schools finished the year a combined 14-65 overall with a 6-42 record in conference play.

from last year that expect to be strong again. USC doesn’t catch a break when it comes to its section, either.

The Rebels are in a tough Section 2AA that also houses Hayfield and Blue Earth Area.

Rebels coach Stu Hendrickson has confidence in his own program, too, however.

If USC stays healthy, he says, “we’re going to be able to do more things this year.”

The Rebels are coming off a 14-13 season in which they went 11-5 in the Gopher Conference — good enough for a fourth-place finish in the conference standings.

They have three returning seniors, including all-conference point guard Taylor Allis and Megan Jacobson and Shelby Latusek. Their most important returning player, however, might be Val Sahr.

Despite being just a junior, the post player is already a twotime all-conference selection.

Two other juniors, Danielle Koestler and Kayla Stenzel, will likely see significant playing time for the Rebels as well. But NRHEG and WEM will also compete for the top spot in the Gopher Conference. NRHEG returns almost all of last year’s 27-2 squad (16-0 in conference play), and WEM put up a respectable 18-9 (12-4) record as well.

“I do expect us to be in the top of the conference this season,” WEM coach Linda Coleman said. “Hopefully we’ll be in the running to be in first in

WEM will be relying on a mixture of seniors and juniors, including returning starters Amanda Barton and Cassie Masberg, to lead the team this season.

A number of other Gopher conference schools, including Mankato Loyola, JanesvilleWaldorf-Pemberton and Medford, are looking to improve on last year’s sub-par records.

Gustavus looking to get back to championship

Fresh off an NCAA Division III Championship appearance, the Gustavus Adolphus men’s hockey team drops the puck on their 2009-10 season with the bar set high for themselves. The Gusties fell to Neumann in the NCAA Championship Game last season, but return all but two players from that squad. The Gusties finished second in the MIAC last season at 10-6 and were 19-10 overall. The team’s goal now is to get back to Lake Placid and leave as winners.

“It was a great experience for the guys going to Lake Placid to play hockey; it is truly a historic venue,” said head coach Brett Petersen.

“Our returning players gained a lot of experience and have seen every game possible. It will help us going forward that there is nothing we haven’t seen.”

Petersen knows that the expectations are high heading into this season and is ready to be the hunted instead of the hunter. The Gusties were picked to finish first in the MIAC preseason coaches poll, as the squad only lost two seniors from last season. They

return their leading scorer from last season, All-American senior forward David Martinson.

They also have a rising star in sophomore forward Ross Ring-Jarvi, who was named to the All-Rookie team last year while finishing second on the team in points. They should be strong in goal as well, with All-Conference junior Josh Swartout returning.

The MIAC often sends only one team to the NCAA tournament each season, so Coach Petersen knows how important each conference series is when it comes to seeding and positioning for the conference tournament.

“With only 16 conference games, all eight series we play are huge and every game is important,”Peterson said.

The MIAC figures to be competitive this year, with no teams taking a step back because of how young the league was last year. St. Thomas was picked to finish second in the preseason coaches poll and is a storied program that always seems to finish at or near the top of the conference. A dark-horse in the conference could be Hamline, according to Petersen, as they are muchimproved heading into this season after finishing fourth

last year.

Coach Petersen credited last season’s success with his team’s ability to stay healthy and stay out of the penalty box, as the Gusties were one of the least penalized teams in the nation last year. While you can’t control health, Petersen does expect certain things of his players on both ends of the ice.

“We run a fast-paced, wide-open spread offense and we skate very well.

We try to get up and go, so we need a balanced attack on offense with everyone contributing,”Petersen said.

“On defense we need to play hard so that we do not get loose defensively and we need to force teams to make mistakes.”

One obstacle for the Gusties will come early in their season, as three players will be playing football and won’t begin practicing with the team until after Thanksgiving. That being said, Coach Petersen is looking for ward to this season for reasons other than his team’s expected success.

“I love interacting with these young men,” Peterson said. “They are good hockey players, but even better people.”

After making it to the MIAC semi finals last season, the Gustavus Adolphus College men’s basketball team hopes to make it to the top of the conference this season.

Leading the Gusties are senior captains Jesse Van Sickle, Ryan McPartland, and senior post Sam Paulson. Adding to the team’s potential is junior Dan Schmidtknecht who will take over at point guard. Known as a leader on the court, Schmidtknecht will have to use his skills to get into the lane and get the ball to teammates.

Last season McPartland averaged 5.5 rebounds per game and scored 9.7 points per game.

Paulsen averaged 4.9 rebounds per game and 9.9 points per game.

McPartland and Paulsen both received All-Conference honorable mentions during the 2008-09 season.

Van Sickle, a three-year letter winner and 2008-09 All Conference honoree, averaged 10.4 points per game last season.

“He is a strong defensive player and good ball handler,” said Ethan Armstrong, the author of a Nov. 9 article on GAC’s athletic website.

Adding to Van Sickle’s and Schmidtknecht's perimeter prowess is junior Phil Wirtjes. Wirtjes averaged 3.9 points per games last season.

Armstrong states in his article that Wirtjes is a strong defensive player and good ball handler who compliments Schmidtknecht and Van Sickle well.

Other players expected to add depth are sophomores Tyler Gray, Seth Anderson, and Adam Michel. New players are freshmen Ty Moore, Ben Biewen, and James Hill.

“Seniors Mychal Crowder and sophomore Paul Blacklock are expected to back up Paulson and McPartland in the post,” Armstrong said.

The Gusties opened their season with a 66-84 non-conference loss to Southwest Minnesota State University on Nov. 9. The next game for the men is on Tuesday as the team travels to Storm Lake, Iowa for a non-conference game

versus Buena Vista University.

Women For the ninth season under head coach Mickey Haller the women hope to place in the top three in the MIAC. Returning to the team are seniors Brianna Radtke, Julia Schultz, Katie Layman, and Brittany Holm. Juniors Molly Mathiowetz, and Brittany Holm also return.

Radtke, the top player returning to the team, averaged 9.8 points per game and led the team with 3.8 assists per game during the 2008-09 season.

With practices just beginning, the team hopes to improve both the offense and defense. Post’s Mathiowetz, Layman, and Holm hope to improve their defensive tactics. Mathiowetz averaged 4.4 rebounds and 8.1 points per game.

The women began their season Saturday with a non-conference game against Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D.

staff writer It may seem hard not to dominate a conference with only six teams but that’s the case when dealing with girlsbasketball in the South Central Conference.

The South Central Conference is made up of six teams. Waseca and New Ulm are in class AAA, while St. James, Fairmont, Blue Earth Area and St. Peter reside in a class below them, AA. In the last four years the conference has seen three different champions — Waseca

in 2006, Blue Earth Area in 2007 and 2008 and Fairmont last season.

Although when crowning the conference champ it’s been easy in ttheir individual years with each team dominating each year.

“I think that the conference as a whole is pretty tough,” said 2006 Waseca graduate Luke Janssen. “In my bias opinion I do think Waseca has the edge but Blue Earth and Fairmont should probably not be overlooked.”

Blue Earth Area To be 15-11 overall and 7-3 in the South Central Conference are the expectations for head boys basketball coach Gary Holmseth at Blue Earth Area High School. Last season, BEA finished 13-11 overall and 6-3 in the SCC. This season Blue Earth return four starters, senior post Garrett Anderson, Nick Lee, guard Nate Carr, and junior Riley Holmseth.

Anderson, the top returning player for the Buccaneers averaged 15 points per game and 10.3 rebounds per game during the 2008-2009 season. Lee follows with 14 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game.

The season officially begins on Nov. 23 with practice and the first game for the Bucs is at Kasson-Mantorville Dec. 5.

Fairmont The goal to be conference champions again is one that is a priority for the Fairmont Cardinals. Last season, Fairmont finished with an overall record of 15-8, 9-1 in the SCC. Returning for the Cardinals this 2009-2010 season are seniors Joey Fitzgerald, Ben Rosol, Brandon Splinter, Justin Heinrich, Weston Bremer, Seth Vogelsang, Zach Roggow Will Hawkins, Jack Schmid, and Tanner Thiesse. Junior Logan Peymann also returns to the team.

The Cardinals open their season Dec. 8 against Worthington.

Seniors Wil Pfieffer, Nick Hoelmer, Jeff Rux, Brandon Klug, Christian Hall, Nick Hanson, Dustin Sartori, Kyle Waugh, and Sam Scharper all return to the team.

Finishing the 2008-09 season with an 8 -12 overall record and 6-4 in the SCC and returning as many players as they are, winning conference doesn’t seem too far from reach for the Bluejays.

“Molly has a great shot, plays tough defense, and inspires the rest of the team,” said Young-Klockzeim. “Both Casey and Molly have started since they were freshman, and we will need to build off of that senior leadership.”

Klockzeim said of last seasons overall record.

“We ended the season very stronxsg, winning a couple very tough conference games on the road. We need to build off that momentum and experience.”

The Vikings opened the 2009-10 season with a 49-62 loss against WisconsinSuperior at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium Monday.

Men’s On the men’s team, BLC is fourth in pre-season rankings, according to a Nov. 13 article on BLC’s athletic page.

Returning to the team are seniors Tommy Saffert, Jeff Zimmerman and Stephone Frederick, junior Aaron Mantey, and sophomore Jeremy Strong.

“We expect to make it to the conference tournament and improve each day in practice,” said Saffert.

The Martin Luther men's team is predicted to take fourth place in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference during the 2009-10 season.

The Knights are currently 1-1 (as of production) with a loss to Dubuque and victory over UW-Superior.

The team is led by head coach James Unke, who also acts as the school's athletic director.

The Knights currently have 14 members on the roster, including three seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and five freshman.

In the Knights victory, junior guard Greg Hulzhueter led the team with 18 points, off of 8-15 shooting.

Sophomore forward Justin Danell added 16 points, while senior Ryan Kolander and sophmore guard Jarod Matthies also hit double-digits.

With the football season winding to the end, many towns around southern Minnesota are starting to notice that the excitement around the turf has changed to the court. For many high school students in southern Minnesota, once football ends they soon transition from under the Friday night lights to the hard-wood floor.

This is especially true to the Minnesota River conference, where teams across the area are looking towards another competitive 2009. The River conference is always very strong with the group of talented players that compete in the surrounding towns.

“One thing about the conference we play in, is it is always a strong and deep conference,” said Holy Family head coach Matt Thuli.

The conference will also have some transitions this year.

After previously being a 2-A school, Holy Family will now move to 3-A. While they may be the smallest team at the level, the competition should benefit the team.

Along with Holy Family,

the conference has three other teams that really stand out this year. Sibley East, Jordan and Belle Plaine are always consistent and should have some strong battles this year to be at top of the conference.

Holy Family will be one of the team that stands out a lot in size this year. After being a guard-oriented team traditionally, Holy Family has three guys that will be 6’5 and over in height. The added size is going to change the scheme a little bit; something Thuli says could be an advantage for his team.

“What we’ll be running is different than what we’ve run in the past, which could be an advantage for us,” Thuli said.

The seven other teams in the River conference will also look to throw some new things in their game plan. As good as the competition should be it’s anyone’s guess who will be the team that is going to emerge as the elite team in the conference.

There should be plenty of drama all season in what should be another exciting year for River basketball.

Having a young team is not out of the ordinary in the River conference this season.

However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lack of talent.

The River conference is consistently one of the best conferences in the state every year.

“Every game in our conference is contested,” said Montgomery-Lonsdale head coach Dion Koltes. “There’s never a night off.”

That is true again this year with all the talent the River conference has this year.

Along with MontgomeryLonsdale, Le Sueur is very good after finishing in third place last season in the state tournament. Holy Family is always a tough opponent as well, along with Jordan who again boasts a talented lineup.

Montgomery-Lonsdale will perhaps have the most unfamiliar roster this season.

They will only be returning one senior and will count on a group of underclassmen to contribute. Despite returning four seniors, Jordan lost over

a thousand points in scorers from a season ago and will also be a team that will count on new players to contribute.

“There will be a lot of teams who will be fighting for the conference this season,” said Jordan head coach Paul Lambrecht. “If we’re consistent we’ll be in good shape.

Consistently will be the key for all the teams this season.

A strong conference record will set-up teams in a good position in sectionals playoffs.

That could make the difference whether a team has a chance to make the state tournament or not.

In the River conference, teams learn early that they need to play their best against the best. Beating strong conference opponents strongly benefits teams when they do head into the post-season.

“I’ve always had the philosophy to play the best teams and learn from those games,” Koltes said.

The strength of the River conference schedule should strongly benefit all its teams as the season moves forward.

Tiffany Moe won’t forget last season anytime soon. She and the other members of the Minnesota State women’s basketball team capped off a 32-2 season by winning MSU’s first-ever Division II national championship in San Antonio.

But as a new season begins, Moe isn’t forgetting about where her team’s focus needs to be now. “[Winning a championship] was a great feeling, but our focus this year is this season,” said Moe, who averaged 8.8 points per game in 2008-09 and led the Mavericks in assists. “We’ve got new goals and a new team, and so we can’t really focus on last year.

We have to focus on this year.”

Focusing on this year means moving on without key players from last season’s squad, including the team’s three leading scorers in Heather Johnson, Joanne Noreen and Alex Andrews. It means moving on without a fourth starter, junior Andrea Walsh, who will miss the season after undergoing surgery last month to fix a bulging disc in her back. It

also means dealing with the increased scrutiny and expectations of being a defending champion.

No one knows that more than Moe or her second-year coach, Pam Gohl.

“We’re going to have a target on our back all year,” Gohl said. “When you’re on top, like the [New York] Yankees or anybody else, everybody else is out to get you.”

The Mavericks enter the season ranked sixth in the USA Today ESPN Division II Poll and first in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches Poll despite returning only two seniors.

One is Moe, who put up 15 points and a team-high seven assists in MSU’s season-opening 85-30 drubbing of Dana College Tuesday. The other is 6-foot forward Liz Trauger, who averaged 8.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game last season.

Both Moe and Trauger say they’ve taken on more of a leadership role, especially since the team discovered Walsh would miss the season.

Last season the Minnesota State men’s basketball team faltered down the stretch, not because of talent, but because of the apparent lack of ability to cooperate with each other on the court.

Sure, they finished 26-9 overall and 26 wins would be accepted by most programs, but MSU isn’t one of them.

The Mavericks will be bringing in new faces and they expect new results.

If there were a face for the Maverick basketball program, it would be a guy whose been around for a few years — or five.

Fifth year point guard Jesse Clark has been a part of winning streaks, losing streaks, conference championships and last year’s third place finish in the NSIC. “A lot of that is just that I have been here for long enough,” Clark said. “I think that I just know what coach (Matt Margenthaler) wants on the floor from all of us. I just try to be an extension of him on the court.”

Clark is likely the truest point guard a fan will see in all of Division II basketball. He

led DII in assist-to-turnover ratio and was tied for No. 1 in the entire nation.

“I think that Jesse is the definition of a point guard,” said center Travis Nelson.

“He leads the team in times of trouble.”

This season, the Mavericks have plenty of talent for Clark to pass it off to, but the question once again will be whether or not they can mesh together.

Despite bringing in three very talented, but new, transfers aboard in Jefferson Mason (Northern Colorado), Jermain Davis (Iowa) and Cam Hodges (Minneapolis Community and Technical College), Clark thinks that they will be just fine.

“It’s really gone well so far,” Clark said. “It’s a work in progress. Everyone is still getting used to playing with each other, but we’ll only get better with time.”

While averaging nearly nine points per game, Clark has been named captain for two consecutive seasons for a reason.

A lot of Clark’s success last year had to do with the inside play of Nelson — who was also named captain for this season.

After transferring from the University of Wyoming last season, Nelson has turned heads in the NSIC after averaging 14 points and nearly six assists, which was good enough for him to be tabbed a Preseason-All-American.

Nelson was also picked as

First year head coach 'Means' business LEE HANDEL

wale agboola • msu reporter First year head coach, Eric Means, has gotten off to a hot start as coach for the women's hockey team.

Eric Means spent the past 14 years as an assistant on the MSU men’s hockey team. He was around to see the birth of the women’s hockey program at MSU and all of the ups and downs the team has had since then. Means now has his chance to lead that same women’s hockey team to newer and greater heights after becoming the third head coach in the program’s history last May. He brings a solid resume to the table and is ready to take the Mavericks to new levels of success in his first year at the helm.

“He’s been great,” said senior forward Christina Lee. “He brings this fire and drive to the team that we needed and has this positive energy about him that really motivates us. He also has brought many aspects of the men’s game over for us to work into our game and I think that has really helped us.”

Means was a part of many key advances in the men’s hockey program, including its entrance into the WCHA and transition to a Division I level of competition. He has coached many great players throughout

the years and has focused most of his attention towards working with the MSU defensemen on the ice. He also has experience in the area of recruiting, serving as MSU’s recruiting coordinator.

“He really knows what he is talking about so we trust him 100 percent and try to learn as much as we can from him every day,” said senior forward Ashley Young. “It’s also good to know he has been involved in the game so long and that he believes in us.”

During his playing days as a defenseman on the University of Minnesota hockey team, Means knew what it was like to be a winner year in and year out. He helped lead the Gophers to a regular season title, two playoff titles, and a birth to the NCAA tournament all five years he was there.

“He knows the game and knows how to win,” said sophomore goalie Alli Altmann. “He has so much experience and I think he brings the intensity of the guy’s program over to us.”

Not only will the girls have to adjust to aspects of the men’s game being brought over by Coach Means, but Means will also have to adjust to the women’s game.

He won’t need to adjust to the level or style of play of the women’s game, he’ll have to adjust to what time the games are being played at.

“There aren’t many differences player-wise in terms of how you coach them,” said Means. “It’s mainly start times. We get very little turnaround between games and we can’t watch as much film or get as much rest as you could on the men’s team.”

MSU has never finished in the top half of the conference standings in its existence, and that is definitely the goal heading into conference play this season. Coach Means believes his team is ready to change that trend this season and knows how important it is to get off to a good start.

“We want to take it one game and one series at a time, but it is especially important to get off to a fast start this year because we are probably going to lose at least two players to their Olympic teams for 14 games apiece, so it is important we win these early games when we are at full strength,” said Means.

Unappreciated is probably the best word to describe Kael Mouillierat, who might have had the WCHA’s quietest 17-goal season ever last year.

In the WCHA, only one player - Minnesota’s Ryan Stoa scored more goals than Mouillierat did last season.

Yet it wasn’t often one heard Stoa, who has since left the Gophers for the NHL, and Mouillierat’s name in the same breath, or heard Mouillierat’s name spoken with the rest of the elite WCHA forwards.

But it should be.

“I would say he’s right up there with any of those guys,” said junior defenseman Channing Boe. “I think Kale brings more to the table than some of those guys. He’s a little bigger and he’s a great defensive player as well as a great offensive player. He’s a kid with a lot of skill that doesn’t get as much recognition as some of the other top players in our league.”

Mouillierat, the Mavericks assistant captain, scored 19 goals in 76 career games his first two years at Minnesota State, but exploded last year for 17 goals in 30 games.

“It just comes with experience,” he said. “I got put into more spots to score goals and I got more ice time than I ever did before. My confidence kept building last year and that’s pretty much all it was.”

Mouillierat played in at least 30 games in each of his first three seasons, and has played

a big role for the Mavericks since his arrival. He’s a valuable player on the penalty kill and power play, and had eight power-play goals last season.

Mouillierat, like the Mavericks, has gotten off to a slow start this year. He has one goal and four points through 10 games, but those numbers shouldn’t last long.

“Kael’s a goal scorer and I think he has the ability to go past that this year,” said head coach Troy Jutting.

“I think he has the ability to be one of those kids who not only can score goals for us, but be one of the big-time goals scorers in the league.”

You often hear in sports that the best teams have developed a culture of winning. A broad definition of that term is that a team has established a winning tradition over a number of years.

One team that fits this phrase perfectly is the Minnesota State wrestling team. Since head coach, Jim Makovsky has been at the helm of the program, the Mavericks have established themselves as a wrestling power house among the nation’s Division two programs.

“You got to get people who want to be successful,” said Makovsky. “We have had kids with

an unbelievable work ethic and leadership skills.”

The success that MSU has had since Makovsky became head coach in 1993 has been well documented. The Mavericks have had ten national champions along with another 74 All-Americans.

The Mavericks also have finished second in the nation on two different occasions.

The Mavericks again will look to build on those accomplishments this season. They have been picked to repeat as NSIC conference champions and are ranked No. 2 in the country in pre-season rankings. However, those numbers don’t mean much to Makovsky this early in the season.

The Mavericks are a young team but also have some very good returning athletes. MSU returns five members who qualified in the NCAA national meet last season, including two All-Americans in Brady Wilson and Andy Forstner.

Wilson has the best opportunity to bring home an individual national championship. The three-time All-American is the

A question mark MSU has will be what they get out of their lower-weights. Makovsky described that area as still blurry early in the season but he looks forward to see who is going to step up this season.

“I’m excited for this group,” Makovsky said. “We’re a little younger than usual but that’s okay. It’s refreshing.”

The Mavericks will have an intense conference schedule. St. Cloud State, Upper Iowa and Augustana are the three teams that highlight MSU’s toughest opponents. But Makovsky likes having quality opponents to prepare them for their top goal, winning a national championship.

The main obstacle the Mavericks face in reaching that goal will be defeating Nebraska, Omaha.

The defending national champs are picked to repeat this year and have established themselves as perhaps the Maverick’s biggest rival. It will likely be the two teams atop the standings when the season comes to an end.

The 26 members that make up this year’s Mavericks team will now begin to focus on improving their individual numbers while hoping to also win their first NCAA team championship.

“If we get guys on board with their individual goals the team goals will take care of themselves,” said Makovsky.

With all the past success, the Mavericks should have no problem buying into to that theory.

Southern teams on rise PAT DELANEY

In the past, high school hockey was often overlooked in the state of Minnesota. The best teams were mainly up in the metro and northern parts of the state, while numbers in southern Minnesota were small.

However, that has been changing over the last decade. There are more players playing hockey in southern Minnesota now, helping this part of the state become competitive with the rest of the schools with hockey programs.

“The southern teams are starting to have the same opportunities now, with training and dry land opportunities,” said Waseca head coach Chris Prescott. “It’s really great for hockey in Minnesota."

Waseca and the rest of the teams in the South Central conference are looking to continue to grow going into the future. The conference is still small,to find the top competition, but the strong number of players in schools like Waseca, St. Peter and New Ulm shows promising signs that the conference has a chance to continue to grow into the same levels of talent that other conferences have.

Over the last 23 years, the king of the conference has been New Ulm. No other team has been able to find

Martin County West brings experience LEE HANDEL

Year in and year out the Gopher Valley Conference is always wide-open and competitive, with many wrestlers in the conference earning individual honors and some advancing to the state tournament.

This year should prove to be no different, as each team in the conference returns the majority of their wrestlers from last season.

No team comes into this season with more experience than the Martin County West Mavericks. The squad finished 10-12 at the dual meets, but rebounded nicely to close out the year and ended up taking third in the conference tournament.

Despite losing senior heavyweight Blake Crosby, a fourth-place finisher at sections last season, the Mavericks return many talented and experienced wrestlers who are ready to step up and have break-out seasons.

The squad is led by senior Alex Anderson (135), who went 34-5 last year and took third place at sections. Another up-and-coming wrestler is sophomore Bryan Andrews (145), who also won more than 30 matches last year as a freshman and also took third at sections. Junior Levi Ringnell (140), who took fifth in sections, and senior captain Nich Dorschner (171) are

both expected to have good seasons.

Maverick head coach Curtis Smith is hoping that his team’s experience will help them as a group, as well as individually. Smith has had three players who placed third at sections in his short time as coach, but is expecting bigger and better things this season.

“We have never had an individual qualify for state since I have been here and I believe that we have a couple of guys capable of doing so this season,” said Smith.

The Mavericks biggest rival, no matter where both squads are in the standings, is Fairmont. They are the closest dual meet travel-wise to the Mavericks.

Hildenbrandt and Brinkman lead conference TYLER BUCKENTINE

That’s the given motto for a pair of wrestlers in the South Central Conference this season. Seniors Ethan Hildebrandt of St. James and New Ulm’s Pat Brinkman have both wrestled in the state title match but left as runners-up.

Hildebrandt took second in 2008 at 119 pounds and took third last March at 125. In the past three seasons, Hildebrandt has accumulated a 102-15 record but still hasn’t won the big one, a goal his coach – also his dad – is trying to help him reach.

“He’s worked really hard in the offseason, doing the freestyle and Grecco-Roman circuit,” said St. James coach Gene Hildebrandt. “Physically, he’s ready. Now it’s a matter of finding the right weight that’s comfortable for him and going from there.”

Ethan Hildebrandt – who plans to wrestle at Southwest State – has taken second twice at the state freestyle competi-

tion.

Brinkman, a future South Dakota State Jackrabbit, won the state Grecco-Roman and freestyle competitions in 2009 but is also looking for his first state high school title. He took a 39-3 record into the 21-pound state title match last season but fell to Foley’s Kris Olson, 5-2.

Brinkman’s title run will be delayed because of suspensions that will keep him sidelined for part of the season.

Kleinschmidt leads Cedar Mountain

The conference that spans 52 miles from far east GibbonFairfax-Winthrop (GFW) to far west Wabasso, the Tomahawk is looking forward to submerging themselves back into boy’s basketball.

The Tomahawk Conference consists of 10 teams: Minnesota Valley Lutheran (MVL) and GFW are class AA programs, Buffalo-Lake-Hector (BLH), Wabasso, Springfield, McLeod West, New Ulm Cathedral, Sleepy Eye, Cedar Mountain/ Comfrey and Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s are all class A squads.

There have been two teams that have all but dominated the past four years of the Tomahawk.

MVL and GFW have either captured or shared the title all four seasons.

“GFW has been a solid team for as long as I can remember,” said 2005 GFW graduate Nate Firle. “I think this year will be no different I fully expect them to be at the top of the conference all season.”

Since 2004 MVL has posted a 116-22 record ninth best in the state for any boy’s basketball program, while GFW isn’t far behind compiling a just impressive 106-34 record, according to Minnesota-Scores.net.

Last Season newcomer Cedar

Mountain/Comfrey shared the conference title with MVL. The conference scoring leader averaging 26 points per game from Cedar Mountain, Tyler Pendleton graduated. His teammate junior Dalton Kleinschmidt fallowed him by posting the second best average in the conference at 23 points per game.

Although the Tomahawk Conference has produced multiple competitive teams the past few seasons GFW has been the only team to participate in the State tournament in recent memory but was ousted in the first round by Pequot Lakes in 2007. Last seasons Cedar Mountain team came close but was beat by future champions Granada-Huntley-East Chain.

A team that could make a push in asserting themselves as a front runner for the conference title is the Springfield Tigers.

After having a mediocre season last year the Tigers are ready to make a push and only graduated four seniors. They posted a 10-8 conference record and 15-10 overall and are welcoming back the core of last seasons squad.

“I think Springfield has a good team this year and maybe the dark horse this year,” Firle said.

Arguably the front runner has to be Cedar Mountian/Comfrey.

They may have lost their leading

scorer but they have two players for the next two years attempting to bring them to the promise land.

Kleinschmidt who was second in the conference in scoring

last season will have a running mate in fellow junior Nate Golden. They are also welcoming back nine letter winners from a year ago.

The season opens up Dec. 4

in the Le Center tournament. It takes place in Le Center and will host Le Center, Buffalo LakeHector, New Ulm Cathedral and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown.

Davis, along with Hodges and Mason, might give the Mavericks the most talented recruiting class this season as far as transfers go, but the Mavericks know talent always isn’t the ingredient for victory.

“New Ulm has been the elite team in the conference,” Prescott said.

The main reason is simply the numbers of kids interested in hockey. While numbers continue to grow, New Ulm has been steady in the amount of talent they have every year.

The difference now, though, is teams are starting to grow with New Ulm making the conference more competitive. With teams like Waseca, who Prescott says could have one of the strongest years it's ever had, and St. Peter becoming more competitive, the future looks good for the state of the South Central Conference.

In 2007 Blue Earth Area posted an 8-2 conference record and went 19-6 overall and in 2008 they went 9-1 with overall of 24-3 but failed to make it past sections both seasons. And last season Fairmont tallied a 10-0 conference record and suffered only two losses all season, one during section playoffs (22-2).

With the majority of high school sports, senior play can be the difference between a good team and a great team.

In the South Central Conference last season’s scoring leader, rebounding leader and assist leader will all

be on the court.

Junior Ann Marie Brown from St. Peter who averaged 22 points per contest last season is looking to propel her squad past their dismal 2-8 conference mark and 11-13 overall record.

A pair of New Ulm players are returning leaders.

Senior Logan Ahlness led the conference last season with 6.2 rebounds per contest and junior Rachel Holstein dished 4.6 assists a game. These two are hoping to elevate New Ulm’s play and caring them past their forgetful 6-17 season mark last year.

“Truthfully I like that the conference is up for grabs,”

said 2006 Waseca graduate Kiel Rosenthal. “All the teams have strong points and all have weakness. I think it will come down to who really wants and who gets lucky.”

The season begins Dec. 1 when Jackson County Central hosts St. James. New Ulm will welcome Mankato West down highway 14. St. Peter will travel to United South Central High School. While Waseca starts their season at home against section rival Albert Lea.
