Concussions remain risk, mustn't go untreated CHICAGO (AP) — Emergency room visits for school-age athletes with concussions has skyrocketed in recent years, suggesting the intensity of kids’ sports has increased along with awareness of head injuries.

The findings in a study of national data don’t necessarily mean that concussions are on the rise.

However, many children aren’t taken for medical treatment, so the numbers are likely only a snapshot of a much bigger problem, doctors say.

“It definitely is a disturbing trend,” said lead author Dr. Lisa Bakhos, an ER physician in Neptune, N.J. The study examined concussions in organized youth sports involving ages 8 to 19.

ER visits for 14- to 19-yearolds more than tripled, from about 7,000 in 1997 to nearly 22,000 in 2007.

Among ages 8 to 13, visits doubled, from 3,800 to almost 8,000.

While awareness has increased, many parents, coaches and players still don’t understand how serious concussions can be, Bakhos said.

Many often seem less concerned with the injury than with

how soon kids can return to sports.

“They want to know if they can play tomorrow, and you’re just like, ‘No!”’ she said.

“It’s not just as simple as get up, shake it off and you’ll be fine.

“If they’re not treated properly, with rest, then they can have longterm problems.”

Those include learning difficulties, memory problems and chronic headaches.

The study appears in Pediatrics, published online last week along with a report about sports-related concussions from the American Academy of Pediatrics’ sports medicine council.

A concussion means the brain has been jostled.

Symptoms aren’t always obvious.

There usually is no loss of consciousness. And a concussion doesn’t show up on an imaging scan unless there is bruising or bleeding.

Symptoms can include headache, nausea, dizziness and trouble concentrating, and may last about a week.

Sometimes it can take months to recover.

Potential concussions should not be “toughed out,” say the au-

thors of the Pediatrics report.

Affected athletes should always be examined by a doctor or someone else with medical expertise.

Treatment is mainly rest — both physically and mentally, avoiding activities that require concentration and focus.

That may mean reducing schoolwork or staying home.

Video games, computer use and TV can worsen symptoms and should be avoided, the academy report says.

Some doctors advise against aspirin and similar painkillers right after a head injury because they might raise the risk for brain bleeding.

Above all, anyone with a concussion should not return to sports or other physical exertion until their symptoms have disappeared.

“If you go back in too early, that can be devastating,” said Dr. Kevin Walter, co-author of the report and a concussions specialist at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

Resuming sports too soon risks another concussion that could be deadly or cause permanent brain damage, he said.

A concussion should not be dismissed as “not a big deal,” Walter

said.

“In my mind, how the hell can a brain injury not be big deal?” he said.

Sports-related concussions have made recent headlines because of research about brain damage, depression and memory problems including Alzheimer’s disease in retired NFL players who had repeat concussions.

Researchers believe young athletes may be more vulnerable than adults to lasting damage from these head injuries because their brains are still developing.

Several states have adopted or are considering tougher limits on when athletes can resume play after a concussion, as have some schools, amateur leagues and the NFL. Dr. Michael Koester, chairman of a sports medicine committee at the National Federation of State High School Associations, said young athletes increasingly are playing and practicing year-round to stay competitive, a trend that increases chances for injury.

West Football looks to continue dynasty LEE HANDEL

The Mankato West football team is growing accustomed to its season coming to a close in the Metrodome. The Scarlets have been able to sustain success year after year as of late and have built something of a dynasty heading into the 2010 season.

After winning the State 4A Championship over Northfield in the 2008 Prep Bowl, the Scarlets found themselves undefeated and on the cusp of repeating as state champions last season before being ousted in the state semifinals by TotinoGrace 35-0. This sour-tasting defeat put an end to an impressive 17-game winning streak for the Scarlets and also served as a big motivation for this fall’s squad.

West has all of the tools in place to make yet another run at a state title this year, and head coach Mark Esch knows his team is loaded with many talented young athletes who are hungry to get back to the Dome.

“We have outstanding team speed and our kids play extremely

hard,” said Esch. “We also have very good players at all the skill positions and solid lines on both sides of the ball.”

With expectations so high and pressure that grows with every game, the Scarlets know it is important to take it one game at a time this season.

“Since day one our philosophy has been to maintain the same performance and mindset whether we are playing the best team in the state or the worst,” Esch said.

“All we are asking for is their best

when they get up here.”

West has extreme depth at the wide receiver, running back and defensive back positions with numerous fast and athletic players. They are also strong at the most important position, quarterback, led by junior Philip Nelson.

Nelson is a dual-threat quarterback who can run and pass at a high level. He threw for 1,900 yards and 23 touchdowns last season and is on pace to shatter some records as a Scarlet.

Tomahawk's hardwood heroes return PAT DELANEY

The women of the hardwood have hit the court for another season of Tomahawk conference volleyball. On Aug. 16, teams began their preparations for the 2010 season with the hope of putting together a special season.

The conference consists of balanced competition including a team that competed in the state tournament last season. GibbonFairfax-Winthrop, came together at the right time last season and were able to fine themselves among the top eight teams in the state.

This year GFW should have a great opportunity to get back to the state tournament after returning some key players from last year’s team. But they will have a bullseye on their back this season as the other eight teams in the conference will try to have the same success.

The seniors playing throughout the conference will look to make the most of their last volleyball season. It will be how the younger players gel with the veterans that will be a large factor in each team’s success.

One of the older teams in the conference will be Springfield.

The Tigers have six seniors on the roster as well as some talented

underclassmen.

Like the rest of the teams in the conference, showing improvement throughout the season will be key for any of the teams to have success.

Springfield coach, Nicole Wilder has enjoyed the mindset her players have shown.

“They are very dedicated to the sport,” Wilder said.

“They work really hard and they really want to get better.”

Speeding up the offense is always something that teams are working on. At the varsity level there isn’t much time to have to think about when to pass or when to go up for a kill.

The speed GFW showed last year was one of the main reasons they had success last season. The other teams will need to improve in that area if they are going to be

able to compete down the stretch.

“We’re really working on our passing and speeding up our offense,” said Wilder. “Those are things that will help us be competitive each week.”

It doesn’t matter who is playing, every match should bring plenty of excitement. The mindset throughout the conference is that anyone can win on any given

night. Because of this the balance throughout the conference should be strong where everyone is striving for the same goal.

“I think anyone can win,” said Wilder. “It just depends on who comes to play that night.”

East Volleyball boasts strong lineup in '10 LEE HANDEL

Now that they have tasted some success and are all one year older, this year’s version of Mankato East volleyball could be in line for a fair amount of success. With 10 seniors returning this year, the Cougars have a wealth of experience and are ready to take the next step in the Big Nine Conference.

East finished last season 12-12 overall and 6-3 in the Big Nine. After making a nice little run, they were eliminated in the section tournament by Le Sueur-Henderson.

“Even though we didn’t win it last year, we played very well in that section game and I think it fired the girls up and got them excited for this season,” said head coach Kari Rodman.

Rodman thinks that the leadership skills of this year’s seniors is the biggest strength for her team and believes it will give the Cougars an edge over many of their opponents this season.

“I think we need to focus more on the mental part of the game than anything physically,” she said.

“We just need to put it all together this year and pull together and stay

together as a team whether we win or lose.”

According to Rodman, the strengths of this year’s team are its ability to serve aggressively on offense and block and dig on defense. The thing the Cougars need to work on heading into the season is their ability to pass well no matter where they are in their rotation. Rodman is also looking for confident players to step in and excel as subs.

The Cougar’s top rotation is anchored by senior middle hitter Hallie Enderle, who is in her fourth year as a key contributor on varsity

and bound for Division I Central Michigan University once her run at East ends.

“She really goes all-out on the court and is a great all-around player for us and provides lots of court presence,” said Rodman. “She also never settles for anything and is always trying to learn something to better herself.”

Another position that the Cougars are strong at is outside hitter, where they are led by seniors Piper Timmerman and Allyse Johnson. With seven other seniors all making contributions, the pieces are definitely in place for East to

make a run this year.

The biggest obstacles in East’s path to the state tournament are conference foes Owatonna and Rochester Century, who both figure to have strong squads this season.

The Cougars also are looking forward to continuing their rivalry with Mankato West, which is coached

by Rodman’s sister Stefanie Sandstrom. The sisters played together at Minnesota State University, and Rodman always looks forward to coaching against her sister.

“I’d say we have more of a cooperation with each other than a competition against each other,” said Rodman. “When we aren’t opponents we do what we can to help each other’s team out.”

The Cougars are off to a good start and are hoping for a special finish with so many seniors.

“These girls have been playing together since seventh grade and now is their time,” Rodman said.

“If we put everything together, hopefully we can have an awesome year that ends at the Xcel Energy Center.”

West volleyball gets off to hot start Despite the 3-2 start, Mankato West High School’s head volleyball coach Stefanie Sandstrom has a lot to smile about. Year after year, the Big Nine Conference is known for surprises, and Mankato West may be that surprise this year.

Especially dangerous is the Scarletts combination of senior S Alice Rockswold and senior OH Jana Christianson, who make up the heart and soul of Mankato West’s offense. Rockswold leads the team with 87 assists so far this season, and Christianson leads the Scarletts in both kills (38) and digs (53) so far in 2010.

The Scarletts’ senior-heavy roster is stacked with more offensive firepower though including sophomore MH Jessica Goerger, junior MH Hannah Yokiel, senior MH Carly Schindler, and senior OH Danielle Sukalski, all of whom are threats in the combustible Scarlett offense, and integral parts of the solid Mankato West defense.

“I like the way they’re going at it hard and being aggressive….The girls answered everything I asked them to do, and that’s a great feeling for a coach,” West head coach Stefanie Sandstrom told the Mankato Free Press reporter Denny Weller following the Scarletts 3-1 win over Winona. “We didn’t have as many hitting errors as we did at the beginning of the season last year. This win will get the morale going.” And with a roster core made up mostly of seniors, morale may be the only ingredient missing from a potentially surprising team.

The season has began with its fair share of ups (wins over Winona, Rochester John Marshall, and New Prague) and downs (losses to Hutchinson and Marshall), but looking ahead, Coach Sandstrom should have her work cut out for her. With serving and leadership the main questions begging for answers heading into the season, The Mankato West Scarletts have enough weapons to be dangerous this year. And in the never-certain Big Nine Conference, dangerous is reason enough to be very excited.

Loyola kicks off new era with Mettler DREW CLAUSSEN

New head coach Kevin Mettler will try to right a Mankato Loyola Football program that has been in a steady decline since their last trip to state in 2007. Following that state appearance the Crusaders went 8-2 in 2008 and 5-4 in 2009.

Following the 2009 season former head coach Dan Rotchadl stepped down and was replaced by Mettler.

Mettler had been an assistant coach with Loyola since 1992 and had been co-offensive coordinator for the past five year before getting promoted to the top coaching spot.

Mettler is the 6th head coach in Loyola football history.

The Crusaders 2010 team will feature only three seniors, running back Matt Weber, and offensive linemen Danny Solhied and Alex Sieberg. The two seniors along with a number of junior linemen should make up a sold line to open up some holes for Weber along with Loyola’s other running backs Trenton Marks and Luke Hermer.

The line will also have to protect sophomore quarterback Blake Matuska.

Loyola fell to Providence Academy in Mettler’s head coaching debut 20-51. Despite having more than 200 yards of totally offense in the first half the Crusaders trailed 28-6 at the break. They finished the game with 345 yards of offense but were unable to stop Providence’s big plays giving up a touchdown runs of 58 yards and 95-yards, along with a 57-yard touchdown pass and an 87-yard kickoff returned for a touchdown.

Matuska passed for 65 yards on three completions in his first start including a 26-yard touchdown pass. Marks had 83 yards rushing including a touchdown with Hermer chipping in 67 yards and Weber adding 66.

Mankato East not to be overshadowed PAT DELANEY

Mankato West is one of the best teams in the Big 9 conference. They won the conference last season and are an early season favorite to win it again in 2010. The team that may know more about this than anyone is another high school that resides in Mankato.

Mankato East enters this season in the shadow of their rival. They have heard plenty about how good the Scarlets are, but that isn’t changing how they are approaching this season. The Cougars have really come together as a team through the off-season and fall practice, something that head coach Dave Frisell has enjoyed seeing.

“We have great team chemistry this fall,” Frisell said. “I love the way our kids get along and pull for each other.”

The Cougars have four players starting both ways and they will be counted on to bring intensity on both sides of the ball. They’re led by senior quarterback Abe Kolstad who will also start at safety.

that he will contribute at linebacker as well. Yousef Harwil will play wide receiver and defensive back and Robert Haas will also start both ways on the offensive and defensive line.

The Cougars, as well as the rest of the teams in the conference appear to be fighting for a third-place finish.

Mankato West and Owatonna are favored to control the top two spots,

but there will still be plenty of motivation by the Cougar players.

The Cougars have a strong core of players who have varsity experience who know what it takes to win at the varsity level. There are also some young players jumping into a starting role for the first time which can be a challenge early in the season.

“We still have some inexperienced

kids playing varsity for the first time,” Frisell said. “We will have some growing pains along the way.”

Fortunately for the Cougars, they have had strong leadership. Frisell praised the leadership by seniors like Kolstad, and also Colin Paarmann, Sean Devens and Ryan Duff. All have risen to the challenge of being leaders on and off the field.

While the date that is circled on every players calendar is Oct. 20, when they play Mankato West in the last regular season game, the weeks leading to that game will be just as important. If the Cougars can find success in the weeks leading up to that game, the stakes could be much higher.

Playing for a conference title is always a goal for a team but Frisell just wants to see his team continue to get better and let the rest of the season take care of itself. The players have bought into the plan and will try to prove that Mankato West isn’t the only football team in town.

“They have set a great tone for the season,” said Frisell. “Hopefully we will continue to work hard and see results.

Eight seniors to lead MVL volleyball team DREW CLAUSSEN

The Minnesota Valley Lutheran Volleyball team is looking to build off of its 2009 season.

Last year the Chargers started out slow due to an inexperienced roster, then heated up in the middle of the season going 8-0 in October, only to falter in the playoffs.

This year’s squad will be trying to put together a complete solid season. With eight seniors the Chargers will have loads of experience and that should help their cause.

“The enthusiasm that each of them brings to the table has been outstanding and they are focused on team goals above all else, that is what it takes to excel at the varsity level and they are all buying in,” Said head coach Julie Detjen. “The younger players are feeding off of that and have been absorbed into the overall team chemistry already.”

Among those eight seniors are the two team leaders and team captains Miranda Maasz a setter and 2009 team MVP and Heather Dannel a middle hitter who was an honorable mention all-state in class A last year.

Maasz is on pace to achieve her 1000th set assist early this season.

“Heather feeds off of Miranda and the two just flow well together, it’s an instinctive thing right now,” Detjen said. “Heather has worked hard in the off-season to become a more solid force at the net on the defensive end, and the rest of our defense is feeding off of that right now and it’s fun to watch.”

It wasn’t only Dannel and Maasz who were working hard during the off-season. The entire team attended a camp as Southwest Minnesota State University where among other things they worked on their service reception, defense and passing off of service receive.

With a couple of matches into the 2010 campaign the practice is already paying dividends, according to Detjen.

The Chargers believe that they can compete every time they step on the court and want to be in the running for the Tomahawk title. Their conference has several solid teams including Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop who is the defending conference champion and was the section state representative at the state tournament.

“We want to be playing in November, so I guess that speaks for itself,” Detjen said. “I am simply enjoying molding the girls that are out there every day and love the competitive spirit that is evident in everything that they are doing."

Balanced attacks in Girls' prep soccer LEE HANDEL

The early themes of the 2010 season for the area girls' prep soccer teams have been parity and balance. Area schools Mankato West and Mankato East both have solid squads this season and should both be amongst the top teams in the Big Nine Conference.

The Scarlets from West have quite the soccer program going these days, with very stiff competition amongst the girls just to make the varsity squad. This has helped the team overall as they are fresh off the program’s first trip to state in its 14 years of existence.

West is returning numerous starters and is deep at pretty much every position. They are led by a pair of senior captains, midfielder Emmalei Huber and defender Brianna Christiansen. They also have three talented young attackers Jacqui Miller, Alyssa Brinkman and Breeta Oxnard.

After tallying a school record 50 goals last season, the Scarlets possess tons of offensive firepower and hope that will lead to more success for the program in 2010.

Returning starting goalkeeper Jamie Wright should also be strong in net for the Scarlets this year.

The East Cougars are also coming off a strong 2009 campaign, where they went 10-83 and made it to the section

championship game.

The Cougars lost some key players from last year’s team, but have lots of experience returning. They will be led by senior captains Ashleigh Pischke and Alex Miller on the offensive side of the field.

Senior stopper Amanda Iversen will anchor a strong defense in front of returning sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Ekstedt, who figures to have a bright future in net for East.

East also features some other sensational sophomores, including midfielders Marta Anderson and Mandy Smith and sweeper Hannah Whittington.

The Crusaders of Mankato Loyola also have a strong team that is filled with young and talented players. They are already making some noise on the local scene this year, defeating West 2-1, and have

a lot to be excited about as the season moves forward.

Despite going 6-13 last season, the Crusaders returned many key players from last season’s squad.

They are led by lone senior Hannah Gaspar, a defender, as well as junior forward Mel Sorensen.

Eagle football hope for more luck in 2010 DREW CLAUSSEN

The 2010 New Ulm Eagles football team will look to improve on their 2-7 record from last year.

The Eagles unveiled a new playbook last year, which may have contributed to the team’s inconsistency. Head coach Robert Bute hopes that with a year of experience, the results will be different this year and also has some other things that he would like his team to work on.

“Consistency on offense and less mental errors,” Bute said.

“Last year we were running a new offense, defense and special teams and it took a while for the boys to get it down.”

According to Bute, most of the games the Eagles played last year were close games, including losses to Fairmont, who went to the section finals, and Waseca, who went to state. The only noncompetitive game the Eagles had was the section playoff game against Hutchinson when the Eagles were missing several starters due to an ethics violation.

The Eagles lost nine defensive starters and four offensive linemen from last year’s team. They return their starting quarterback Adam Loose who should benefit from having a year’s experience in the new offensive system. Loose and wide receiver Kevin Clancy are the team leaders, according to Bute.

“Adam Loose at Quarterback and Free Safety is a competitor and enjoys playing football. Kevin Clancy is a quiet leader who leads by example in the weight room and on the practice field,” Bute said.

Clancy, Loose and the rest of the team worked hard to improve themselves during the off-season.

“Repetition and lots of teaching (will help the team improve),” Bute said. “Summer camps and lots of film and running through it on the practice field.”

Competition heats up in South Central Conference PAT DELANEY

The South Central conference doesn’t get the attention of other conferences in Minnesota high school football, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t as much competition. This year, teams across the conference are looking to build on success they had last season, as well as try to take another step forward.

On Aug. 16, teams began hitting the practice field. Optimism is always high when players step on the practice field for the first time. The scorching heat, the two-a-days and aches and pains are just some sacrifices the players will make over the next three months.

With all the work that goes into practice, as well as all the off-season conditioning programs, players know they are putting it on the line to hopefully embark on a special season.

For most seniors, it is their last chance to make lifelong memories and for the underclassmen, this is their chance to prove that they can compete at the varsity level.

In the SCC, expectations are always high for a team like Fairmont

who are trying to win their third consecutive conference title. Blue Earth is a school with a lot of returning starters and may be another early favorite to take control of their conference schedule. St. Peter also appears to have the talent of a team that could find themselves as conference champions if their veteran players are able to gel with some new starters.

But don’t count out schools like New Ulm, St. James and Waseca. All three know they have their own group of talented players and will likely not back down to anyone.

“I think if we play well we can play with anyone in the conference,” said New Ulm coach, Rob Bute.

New Ulm lost in their season opener to non-conference opponent, Jackson County Central. But despite the loss, Bute liked the effort he saw from his players and that effort will be key heading into the conference schedule.

New Ulm has an improved defense from a year ago and if they can get comfortable with some new offensive formations, then they could be a sleeper team in the conference.

Throwing the ball more this season is something New Ulm is working on and will likely help them throw off opposing defenses that are used to a conservative approach.

“I see a lot of positives,” Bute said.

“We just need to keep improving.”

It is a common cliché, but the team who improves the most throughout the season is usually the team that will have the most success in the end.

Fairmont will be the favorites until another team can prove that they are capable of stopping their conference title run.

It will be an exciting next two months watching SCC football, one that should be filled with plenty of competitive games.

“The conference has always been competitive,” said Bute. “Everybody plays each other pretty well.”

staff writer It is starting to finally cool down outside after a month of scorching hot weather. Fall is in the air and just in time for football season.

For Minnesota State, it will be the first year coming into a season as defending conference champions since 1994.

The Mavericks have the look of a team prepared to repeat in that area, but also are hungry to take the next step after losing in the first-round of the playoffs the last two seasons.

“You hope to have that mentality to take another snap,” said head coach Todd Hoffner.

The Mavericks have a nice balance of returning starters and players who are looking to make their mark. The MSU offense should be solid, especially with Steve Pachan returning as the starting quarterback.

Pachan was injured earlier this season but the team is optimistic his return will be sooner rather than later.

It will be the defense though

that has especially high expectations. In football everything starts at the line of scrimmage and on defense, the Mavericks have two of the best players at their positions manning the trenches.

Senior defensive ends, Bryan Schmid and Don Thomas are two of the best defensive ends in the NSIC conference.

Schmid, a First-Team AllNSIC selection and Thomas, an NSIC Honorable Mention selection last season will both be counted on to continue that success into this season.

“We’re just trying to continue to do what we did last year,” said Thomas.

Both players bring veteran leadership to the team and make a habit of making jobs easier for their fellow teammates. Neither is exceptionally large for their position but they make up for it by knowing

their roles and being in the right position.

“They bring a lot of stability,” said Hoffner. “They’re

Talented senior class has high hopes for 2010 The Mavericks have made it to the NCAA tournament three straight seasons and hope No. 4 ends with them on top LEE HANDEL

staff writer The primary goal for many college athletes is to be a part of a successful season while playing the sport they love.

The definition of a special season in collegiate athletics is when a team is able to make a trip to the NCAA tournament.

Enter this year’s Minnesota State women’s soccer team, where four seniors have the rare opportunity to be a part of four consecutive NCAA tournament teams. Laura Leber, Jessie Audas, Emily Petrovich and Ann Kincaid enter the 2010 season with different roles and responsibilites than in years past, but with the same ultimate expectations of the team.

“Everyone’s role changes year to year, but we as seniors have a shared role to lead and create a positive light,” said Kincaid. “We need to show the younger players it [making NCAAs] is something to be expected.”

Although they are few, the seniors on this year’s version of the Mavericks have built quite a legacy of winning and know nothing other than success at the collegiate level.

This will aid the Mavericks as the program looks to make it four straight trips to the NCAAs. “It would be special to be the first class to make it all four years,” said Leber. “If we play with intensity all year and give it our all I don’t see a reason why we can’t get back.”

With 10 players from last year’s squad gone and tons of new faces, the four seniors know it will be hard to duplicate the success of the previous three seasons, but they are ready for the challenge.

“We had big shoes to fill, but I think we are really coming into and embracing our leadership roles,” said Petrovich.

“I tend to look at whether a class of student athletes helps a program reach new heights,

and this year’s seniors have done that,” said McGahey.

Although McGahey has not been along for the whole ride, he has definitely seen this group of seniors develop into

team leaders the past couple of years.

staff writer MSU head volleyball coach Dennis Amundson doesn’t feel any pressure to complicate things quite yet.

“It takes a long time to learn to play volleyball. It’s a high skill level game, so we’re always working on the fundamentals,” Amundson said during practice on Wednesday.

But even though fundamentals are supposed to be technical and tedious, that hasn’t covered up the fact that the competition is starting to heat up.

“There are still some question marks. There’s a lot of competition in this gym right now,” Amundson said.

While students are taking time to ditch bad summer habits and get back into school mode, the athletes seem to be all business, looking as if they haven’t missed a beat.

“We really worry about them not going backwards in the summertime,” Amundson said. “We look to see whether they retain what we did before

they left. That’s what we’re more interested in, and as a group, they all came back pretty much right where we left off.”

This year’s crop of freshmen has impressed so far.

“As far as the freshmen go, our young freshman setter [Kelli Elhardt]is really establishing herself and her purpose on this team. Maddy [Siroin], we’re still trying to figure out whether she’s a middle or an outside, so she’s training at both,” Amundson said. “Dani Beekman has made some really nice effort plays on defense, and Jenna [McNallan] has been hitting well so she’s getting more reps on the first team as an outside hitter.”

With 13 underclassmen on the roster, flashes of potential and glimpses towards the future fill the gym and give fans plenty of reason to be excited going forward.

With no serious injuries holding them back, the coaching staff hasn’t been shy about really pushing two concepts: passing and defense. Even

news of their No. 17 ranking in the AVCA DII Coaches Top 25 hasn’t distracted them.

“Oh, is that what we are?

Listen, I’m glad that they recognize that we have the potential to do well, but until we actually go out there and do well, we’ll just have to wait and see. I tend not to read into that kind of stuff. We’re just trying to learn to pass the ball, not figure out where we are in the rankings.”

The Mavericks have played in two early tournaments.

They first played in Big Rapids, Mich., and were victoroius agianst Hillsdale, Lock Haven, Ferris State and Michigan Tech with combined scores of 12-2.

They next played in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and also ran the table beating Christian Brothers, West Alabama, District of Columbia and Lynn by a combined scored of 12-1.

The Mavericks have their first home game on Sept. 21 against Concordia - St. Paul — the defending National Champions.

Men's cross country This season the Mavericks men’s Cross Country team will try to improve on their injury and sickness riddled 2009 season.

Even though the team finished second in the NSIC, they felt that without their top runners falling under the weather they could have done better. This year the Mavericks will be looking to replace their three top runners from last year Denise Mokaya, Jonathan Stoltman and James Karajsa. Even with a young fairly inexperienced team head coach Mark Schuck still has high expectations.

“My goals have always been the same every year,” Schuck said. “We want to win the conference championship, that’s our goal” Schuck is beginning his 29th season as the Minnesota State head coach. The captains for this year’s team will be seniors Sam Lance and Dan Kromer. The runners have the same expectations for the team as their coach saying that their goal is the win the conference, advance to nationals and then turn some heads at nationals.

Sophomore Jacob Bastyr will return as the top finisher from the NSIC last year.

“The biggest thing to improve on is experience,” Kromer said. “We have a young team, and letting them know that this is their team too and they can take control if they want to.”

The Mavericks started the season ranked exactly where they finished last year, second in the NSIC and seventh in the NCAA. They opened the season Saturday with a second place showing at the St John’s Invitational.

Laura Hughes should also contribute.

“It's always hard to know where you stand in the conference before you have seen anyone compete,” Hoese said.

“But we would like to improve upon our team finishes in the conference and regional meet.

Another team goal is maintain a small time spread between our first and seventh runners.”

The team lifts weights twice a week and usually has two hard workouts a week and does mileage on the other days.

Gustavus brings back talented group of seniors The Gustavus football team enters a new decade with a great deal of optimism and energy as the Gusties look to return to the top four of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in the 2010 season.

Second year head coach Peter Haugen welcomes back 34 letterwinners (17 on defense, 16 on offense, and one on special teams) from last year’s squad that finished at 4-6 overall and 3-5 in the MIAC (fourth place). Senior linebacker Paul Stommes (Richmond, Minn.) and junior wide receiver Elliot Herdina (Blooming Prairie, Minn.) are the two returning All-Conference performers following the 2009 season. Both earned Second Team All-Conference honors. The Gusties will open the 2010 season at home on Lloyd Hollingsworth Field Saturday, September 11, at 1:00 pm against non-conference opponent Wartburg College.

The Gustavus defense brings back eight starters from last year’s unit due to the graduation of Joe Welch, Tony Palma, and Christian Vanek. The Gusties return three of four linebackers, seniors Paul Stommes, Dustin Kammerer (Watertown, Minn.), and Zach Lundquist (Pelican Rapids, Minn.). Lundquist ranked second on the team in tackles last season with 85, while Stommes and Kammerer finished behind him in third (74) and fifth (70), respectively. Senior Jade Kotila (Maple Lake, Minn.) will look to fill the final spot of the linebacking corp.

The Gustavus secondary also returns three of its four starters

from a year ago. Senior Mike Mohs (Andover, Minn.) will anchor the defensive backfield at strong safety, while junior Brad Kruckeburg (Ellendale, Minn.), who played cornerback last season, will makes the transition to free safety. Both Mohs and Kruckeburg recorded two interceptions last season. Juniors Dan Opitz (Burnsville, Minn.) and Jason Cook (Lakefield, Minn.) will play at the corners. Opitz had one interception and four pass break-ups, and Cook saw a good amount of playing time last season, appearing in nine of ten games. Senior David Papas (Chaska, Minn) will also be likely to be called on to add depth at cornerback. The Gustavus secondary will look to improve after ranking ninth in the MIAC in pass defense (264.8 yds/g) at the conclusion of last season.

Juniors Todd Kremmin (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and Tom Einberger (West Saint Paul, Minn.) are two of the three returning starters on the defensive line.

Kremmin (25) and Einberger (14) combined to make 39 tackles last season, and Kremmin forced two fumbles. Senior Brandon Jonker (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) was moved from offense to defense at the conclusion of last season.

He will round out the Gustavus three-man front at defensive end.

Others looking to add depth to the defensive line are juniors Colby Peterson (Paynesville, Minn.) and Dane Mellgren (Cologne, Minn.), and sophomore Jesse Newell (St. Paul, Minn.).

Stepping in at fullback will be seniors John Juran (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and JJ Akin (Farmington, Minn.).

On special teams, the biggest concern is replacing All-Conference performer Matt Knutson at punter. Gustavus led the conference in punting last season with 57 punts for a total of 2118 yards (37.2 avg/p). Sophomore Tom Huepenbecker (Verona, Wis.) will look to return to his role as the place kicker. Huepenbecker was 5-for-14 in field goals last

season with his longest field goal coming from 44 yards. Lane, Sukalski, Kruckeburg, and Herdina are the top prospects for handling the punt and kick return responsibilities this season. Sukalski had 11 punt returns for 105 yards (9.5 avg) last season, while Lane recorded 13 kick returns for 366 yards (28.2 avg.) and a touchdown.

The Gusties will open the 2010 season with three home games, two of which are against non-conference opponents Wartburg College (Sept. 11) and Northwestern College (Sept.

18). The Gusties will complete the three-week homestand with St. Olaf on September 25, for homecoming. The Gusties are fortunate to play six games on

Hollingsworth Field this season.

“What excites me the most about this team is the fact that guys have come into this season ready to compete. You can see that guys have bought into the system, put in the work, and they take their performance very seriously.

We have a good balance of veteran leadership and young talent on this team, and I am extremely happy with the character of this team early on, “ says Coach Haugen.

Gusties new head coach expecting big things New head coach Rachelle Dosch hopes to be at the top of the MIAC The Gustavus volleyball program begins a new era as Rachelle Dosch takes over as head coach for Kari Eckheart who resigned to accept a position as assistant athletics director at the College. Dosch will work with an experienced group of players including five starters and 13 letterwinners from a squad that posted a record of 11-17 overall and finished in a tie for ninth place in the MIAC with mark of 3-8.

Dosch spent the summer making preparations for her first season as a head coach and she is pleased with how the team has responded to her direction in preseason workouts. She stated, “The entire program is going through a transition from the freshmen to the upperclassmen to the coaches and everyone is responding very well by working extremely hard in the gym. As a result, this group has already developed a strong team chemistry.”

All-Conference outside hitter Nicki Ainsworth (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) leads the six returning starters. The other returning starters include defensive specialist Jenny Ewert (Sr., St. James, Minn.), middle hitter Angela Ahrendt (Jr., St. Paul, Minn.), setter Malea Noennig (Jr., NorwoodYoung America, Minn.), outside hitter Olivia Warren (Jr., Goodhue, Minn.), outside hitter Janey Helland (Sr., Mapleton, Minn.), and libero Erin Sherman (So,

Coach Dosch is excited about the energy, enthusiasm, and passion that this group has exhibited during preseason practices and she looks forward to watching them grow together in the next couple of months. She stated, “The team has high goals for this season including working towards finishing at the top of the conference and becoming a team that is “watchable” and “feared”.

Martin Luther football brings senior leadership

MLC football The Martin Luther College football team returns an experienced team for the 2010 season with many of their starters having not only been on the team for four years, but having been starters for four years. The Knights will be looking to replace the left side of their offensive line after losing two three-year starters to graduation. UMAC Lineman and the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Chuqee Fletcher will anchor the MLC defense along with fellow defensive tackle William Fuerstenau. The Knights will be led on offense this season yet again by senior quarterback Greg Holzhueter. Holzhueter went nine of 14 in the team’s season opener against Maranatha with three touchdowns, two of those scores going to his brother Galen Holzhueter. The Knights won 42-18.

“We got an early second quarter lead of 35-0 and then began to substitute freely midway through the second period.” Said head coach Doug Lange. “A few turnovers and undisciplined line blocking stalled most things we tried to do offensively, but ended up with a nice win and a chance for all the players to get some game playing experience.”

will look to improve on their 3-13-2 record from last year.

According to head coach Paul Koelpin the biggest thing the team struggled with last year was putting the ball in the back of the net. This year he plans to change that, and even though the team is not working specifically on offense they are working on their touches in tight spaces, thinking and reacting more quickly with the ball and creating more counter attack opportunities. The Knights have a young squad with only two seniors, although at the moment they are only starting one freshman. The team won their home opener again Lakeland 2-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Zietlow had 15 saves in his first collegiate start between the pipes and was awarded UMAC defensive player of the week homors. The Knights will be led this season by their two captains Andy Danner and Steve White.

“Both of them are rather quiet in temperament,” Koelpin said.

“But they provide a very good

MLC men's cross country The Men’s Cross Country team will field a roster consisting of two seniors, two juniors, three sophomores and five freshmen.

The team will compete in ten meets this season. The Knights kicked off their 2010 season Sept. 1, at Bethany. Nathan Loersch placed fifth with at time of 28:29.5. Teammate Brett Schommer finished 19th with at time of 30:26.7.

Men's golf The Men’s Golf team will consist of two seniors, one sophomore and three freshmen.

The team has play two out of their seven matches already this season. Issac Crass shot an even par 72 in the MLC invitational helping MLC beat Bethany by two strokes. The team then finished in a tie for third in the North Central Invitational.

The Martin Luther women's volleyball team has gotten off to a hot start this season and it could be an early indication that they will compete for the MIAC title.

As of Sept. 12, the Knights hold a 5-4 record with wins over Presentation, Hamline, North Central, Gustavus and Carleton.

They have fallen victim to Macalester, St.. Olaf, St.. Scholastica and UW-RIver Falls.

Conference play does not start until Sept. 24.

The Knights currently sit in third place behind St. Scholastica (8-2) and Minnesota-Morris (5-3).

Freshman Rebecca Engelbrecht is second in the conference with a 30 percent hitting percentage while fellow freshman Mackenzie Krentz is third in the MIAC with 112 total assists and second in the conference with .62 serving aces per match.

In the early season poll, Martin Luther was selected to finish in fourth place.

The Knights finished 7-7 last season in the UMAC and took fifth in the conference.

Martin Luther returns two All-UMAC honorees with Renee Peters and Emily Boldt.

The Martin Luther Knights currently hold a 1-2 record which is good enough for third in the conference.

The win came against Lakeland and the losses to Gustavus and Waldorf.

The Knights might find their road to the top of the UMAC a difficult one as St. Scholastica has won six straight titles.

Martin Luther was predicted to finish in seventh place, but on a positive note, the Knights do bring back seven starters from last year's squad. The list includes leading scorers Kadie Drake, Heidi Heckmann and Emily Marggraf.

Goalie Abijgail Horn and defenders Lindsay Hahn and Heidi Wilz also return.

Hannah Janke hopes to make a splash on the team's offensive game after missing all of last season with an injury.

Martin Luther is averaging 3.3 goals per game which is first in the conference, but are also allowing three goals per game.

Linda Kenyon leads the league in points with 10 for the season and 3.33 per game.

Hannah Mattek is tied for first with two assists on the season.

After Bethany Lutheran’s forgettable 5-16 overall record in 2009, all eyes will be on rookie head coach Sue Forrey to begin turning things around.

But as Coach Forrey saw last year as an assistant with the Vikings, there is a lot to be optimistic about in 2010.

For starters, the cupboard is far from bare. Coach Forrey inherited a talented roster which returns all but one starter, First Team All-Conference Award Winner Laura Parochka. The Vikings look forward to another impressive season from North Mankato’s own, senior S/RH Nicole Jones, who led the Vikings in 2009 with 7.9 assists per set.

The Vikings also look forward to the return of three of their best hitters from 2009, RH Emily Schrupp, MH Laura Holt, and OH Vanessa Harkins.

The trio led the Vikings in kills last year and accounted for 5.9 kills per set collectively. With the core of their offense still intact, the Vikings are poised for an explosive and exciting offense in 2010.

But with all eyes on the Vikings offense, Bethany College’s defense could surprise some people in 2010. Losing Laura Parochka will force someone else to take charge of her team-leading 5.62 digs per set, but Jones (2.69), Schrupp (1.64), and junior OH Amanda Edminson (1.85) return to fill

After a shaky 3-6 start to the season, the Vikings are beginning to heat up after winning two of their last three games against, including wins against Milwaukee School of Engineering and Presentation.

Staring down the barrel of their 2010 UMAC conference schedule, the Vikings show signs of life, and seem ready to finally begin their ascent in the UMAC.

The Bethany Lutheran men's soccer team finsihed last seaosn with a 6-14 overall record and 5-9 in the MIAC. This season the Vikings are predicted to take fourth in the conference which would mean a playoff birth.

They started off on the right foot as they beat the Buena Vista Beavers on Sept. 5 by a score of 1-0 in overtime.

The Vikings outshot the Beavers 9-2 in the shootout.

This year's team returns all scorers from last season.

The list includes Felipe Ortega and Evans Tackie-Yarboi, both all-conference players last season.

The Vikings have 11 incoming freshman, but do lose goalie Will Tatge to graduation.

Senior Cameron Koopman will be fighting for the starting goalie position with freshman Ryan Bolte.

Dehydration concern among youth How to avoid dehydration and when it's time to get medical help Dehydration is a condition that occurs when someone loses more fluids than he or she takes in. Dehydration isn't as serious a problem for teens as it can be for babies or young children. But if you ignore your thirst, dehydration can slow you down.

Our bodies are about two thirds water. When someone gets dehydrated, it means the amount of water in his or her body has dropped below the level needed for normal body function. Small decreases don't cause problems, and in most cases, they go completely unnoticed. But losing larger amounts of water can sometimes make a person feel quite sick.

Causes of Dehydration One common cause of dehydration in teens is gastrointestinal illness. When you're flattened by a stomach bug, you lose fluid through vomiting and diarrhea.

You might also hear that you can get dehydrated from playing sports. In reality, it's rare to reach a level of even moderate dehydration during sports or other normal outdoor activity. But if you don't replace fluid you lose through sweat as you go, you can become dehydrated from lots of physical activity, especially on a hot day.

Some athletes, such as wrestlers who need to reach a certain weight to compete, dehydrate themselves on purpose to drop weight quickly before a big game or event by sweating in saunas or using laxatives or diuretics, which make a person go to the bathroom more. This practice usually hurts more than it helps, though. Athletes who do this feel weaker, which affects performance. They can also have more serious problems, like abnormalities in the salt and potassium levels in the body. Such changes can also lead to problems with the heart's rhythm.

Dieting can sap someone's water reserves as well. Beware of diets or supplements, including laxatives and diuretics that emphasize shedding "water weight" as a quick way to lose weight. Losing water weight is not the same thing as losing actual fat.

Signs of Dehydration To counter dehydration, you need to restore the proper balance of water in your body. First, though, you have to recognize the problem.

Thirst is one indicator of dehydration, but it is not an early warning sign. By the time you feel thirsty, you might already be dehydrated. Other symptoms

of dehydration include: feeling dizzy and lightheaded having a dry or sticky mouth producing less urine and darker urine As the condition progresses, a person will start to feel much sicker as more body systems (or organs) are affected by the dehydration.

Preventing Dehydration The easiest way to avoid dehydration is to drink lots of fluids, especially on hot, dry, windy days. Water is usually the best choice. Drinking water does not add calories to your diet and can be great for your health.

The amount that people need to drink will depend on factors like how much water they're getting from foods and other liquids and how much they're sweating from physical exertion.

When you're going to be outside on a warm day, dress appropriately for your activity.

Wear loose-fitting clothes and a hat if you can. That will keep you cooler and cut down on sweating. If you do find yourself feeling parched or dizzy, take a break for a few minutes. Sit in the shade or someplace cool and drink water.

Sports and Exercise If you're participating in sports or strenuous activities, drink some fluids before the activity begins. You should also drink at regular intervals (every

20 minutes or so) during the course of the activity and after the activity ends. The best time to train or play sports is in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Gastrointestinal Infections If you have a stomach bug and you're spending too much time getting acquainted with the toilet, you probably don't feel like eating or drinking anything.

But you still need fluids. Take lots of tiny sips of fluids. For some people, ice pops may be easier to tolerate.

Caffeine Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it causes a person to urinate (pee) more. It's not clear whether this causes dehydration or not, but to be safe, it's probably a good idea to stay away from too much caffeine in hot weather, during long workouts, or in other situations where you might sweat a lot.

When to See a Doctor

every time you stand up (even after a couple of hours) or if you have very little urine output, you should tell an adult and visit your doctor. The doctor will probably look for a cause for the dehydration and encourage you to drink more fluids.

In general, dehydration is preventable. So just keep drinking that H2O for healthy hydration.

Speaking of off the field, this particular group of seniors tends to see a lot of each other, as three of the four live together and the other is just a stone’s throw away.

“We have all gotten pretty close,” said Audas. “We have also built a good bond that helps us on the field.”

It is always good for a team when its leaders are not shy around each other, and this group can see the difference that it makes on the field. This will help the younger players on the team feel more comfortable and allow the team to work well as one cohesive unit.

“We have been through a lot together and are able to be open and honest to each other,” said Petrovich. “We know what each other feeds off of and it helps during games.”

The four seniors have a pretty good chance to get back to the NCAAs this season. This is because their supporting cast, albeit young, is very talented. Despite facing some injury problems the past three seasons, all fours players embark on 2010 healthy and motivated to accomplish such a unique feat.

“It’s like I’m not only doing it for me, but for them too,” said Kincaid.

Despite each player having their own individual goals, these seniors know that the biggest success they can have is team success.

“I want to be a part of a team success story,” said Audas. “Making it back would be a great experience and accomplishment for us.”

The defense will have their hands full against Northern Michigan. The Wildcat’s have talent at a lot of positions and no more may this be true then at quarterback.

Carter Kopach is a three-year starter at NMU and Hoffner considers him one of the best quarterbacks the team will face all season.

It will be a good first challenge for a defense that is eager to set the tone early on.

The Mavericks used a great start last season to propel them through the conference schedule and are eager to get off to that same start.

“I think we have all the people we need to have a good defense,” Thomas said.

“We’re focusing on getting as much three-and-outs as possible. It builds confidence and also sets the tone for the conference.”

On a defense that is full of playmakers, guys like Schmid and Thomas play an important role. They help relieve pressure for senior linebackers Dan Fehlberg and Matt McQuiston who are two of the best tacklers on the

Both players are a packaged deal who feed off each other. Thomas transferred to MSU from Western Washington after the 2008 season.

Originally a defensive tackle, the coaches liked the idea of what he could do on the opposite side of Schmid.

It turned out they were right to make the move.

Thomas flourished in his new role and a lot of this is due to what he was able to take away from Schmid.

“For me, I just learn off of him,” said Thomas.

Schmid has been happy to help in anyway he can. Like the rest of the seniors on this team, the two defensive ends know this is their last shot.

Schmid was here when MSU was struggling to get to a .500 record three years ago.

The last two years have seen MSU develop into one of the toughest D-2 schools in the country. Ranked No. 21 heading into this season, the Mavericks are no longer a secret to anyone.

However, they are still trying to get over the hump of advancing past the first

round. Most players would say last year is behind them but there is a sense that the pride of the older players is telling them they have some business to finish.

“We’ve made it to the playoffs, but now we want to go further,” said Thomas.

The Mavericks started off the season 2-0 with a 7-6 win over Northern Michigan and a 21-14 win over Northern State.
