LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer Last season was one to forget for the Mankato Loyola/St. Clair/LCWM Boys soccer team, but a new season is on the horizon and this team is very excited to get rolling in 2014. “Work hard, play hard has been out theme this year,” said Loyola head soccer coach Lee Miller. “We want to go out and get better every day, every week, and every game.” “We have a very good defense that can keep us in games, and our goalkeeper is excellent so we always have a chance,” said Miller. That defense is led by three seniors: Quinn Seys, Malik Baxter and James Marti. They combine with sophomore goalkeeper Colton Corcoran to create a defense that allows opponents an average of 1.8 goals per game. “We have one of the top goals against average, so we are a good defensive team.”

The Maple River Boys basketball team expects to be a much improved club from last year. "Last season, we were young and inexperienced." Head coach Chad Ostermann expressed.

"Hopefully the game experience the kids received last year helps them for this season." Maple River has a nice group of returnees in Jonah Breiter who averaged 17.0 ppg and Grant Sonnek who averaged 6.4 ppg and 4.3 rpg and a solid bunch of newcomers that will compete for playing time.

"We hope to compete for conference and section crowns by the end of the year." Ostermann says. As for the Maple River wrestling team, they are looking to continue there strong hold in the

A new year for the Chargers MVL's football squad looks to improve from a 2-4 record they own so far in 2014.

DEREK LAMBERT Staff Writer

The Minnesota Valley Lutheran Chargers maybe haven’t gotten off to the start they were hoping for on the gridiron, but there certainly isn’t any reason to worry just yet. At 2-3, the Chargers are just a win shy of the .500 mark with three games to go in the regular season. Senior running back Seth

Kroells has been the workhorse in the running game for the Chargers, receiving most of the carries for MVL. Kroells had a career game earlier this month in a 28-21 loss to Wabasso where he rushed for 52 yards and scored all three touchdowns for the Chargers. On the defensive side of the ball, Myles Merseth and Andrew Kuester, in addition to playing offense, combined for

31 total tackles in the Wabasso game. The road to .500 won’t be an easy one, though. Next up for the Chargers is a 4-1 Springfield team that will prove to be tough, followed by an undefeated New Ulm Cathedral who are atop the Southern Minnesota Conference

The Mankato West football team is off to a hot start; so far the team is undefeated. Last season the Scarlets finished 8-2. Ryan Schlichte completed 12-16 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns as well as one rushing touchdown against Mankato East. Travon Jones had two rush-

ing touchdowns. Connor Watts had six receptions for 118 yards and two touchdowns. The Scarlets have dominated every team they have faced this season. In its first game they won 74-14 against Albert Lea. Mankato West boy’s cross country have a few promising runners this season. Senior captain Ben Broze was All-Conference Honorable Mention last

season and has been the Scarlets “number one man” so far this season, running in the 16:00s for the 5k. Broze was the Most Valuable Runner Award winner last season and a four-year letter winner. Broze is looking to place high in the Big Nine Conference and section races.

Let's bring in 2014

East's boy's soccer team is off to a hot start to 2014 JOHN WALFOORT Staff Writer Mankato East girl’s crosscountry is hoping for a top three Big Nine Conference finish this year. Last year, the Cougars finished in seventh place. The Big Nine has added two new teams to the conference, which will be a tough hurdle for the Cougars to overcome. Ivy Glade made it to state last season and finished in fourth place in conference last year. She is only a sophomore and is looking for a big finish this season. The Mankato East football team is off to a bit slow start, going 1-4. In the Cougars’ first win of the season, they had a dominating performance going 34-0 against Red Wing. Nic Seiler went 6-11 for 44 yards with one touchdown in the air and rushed for one touchdown for the Cougars. Nicholas Brink caught one touchdown. Kaje Warren had 73 rushing yards on eight carries and Logan Lebert had 72 rushing yards on 15 carries and three Photo Courtesy of SPX The Mankato East volleyball team is 5-13 so far in 2014.

MANKATO LOYOLA “Work hard, play hard has been our theme this year,” said Miller. "Our goal early in the season was to win more games than last year, now we want to get that home playoff game and win it, moving us on to the 2nd round." continued from 2 Coach Miller is also very excited about his young goalkeeper. “He (Corcoran) never makes mistakes; he is very consistent for his young age.” The offense is led by a set of talented players as well. First year player, Jacob Mach, 4 goals (3 game winning), “is a very good athlete and has picked up the game very quickly” according to Miller. Patrick Busch (4 goals, 2 assist) and Magnus Greif (4 goals, 5 assist) also join. “He (Greif) is a great player, probably one of the best in Mankato. We are lucky to have him,” said Miller. Miller is also lucky to have 4 foreign exchange students from Germany on his team, including Greif. Loyola/LCWM/St. Clair has improved greatly since last season and that is mostly to do with its experienced line up. “Our goal early in the season was to win more games than last year, now we want to get

that home playoff game and win it, moving us on to the second round,” said Miller. “We have 6 seniors and a couple other kids who have played previous seasons. This is a year we can do some damage.” Mankato Loyola/ Cleveland Cross Country Teams The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams will be looking to continue and build on what they established last season, as the Girls won the Gopher/Valley conference and the Boys took second place, respectively. “We have a very young team this year,” said head coach Dale Compton. “Between the boys and the girls we have a combined two seniors and two juniors.” Compton is very impressed what he gets out of leadership from his upper classmen. Senior Aaron Guentzel (Boys) and Junior Ester Archer (Girls) are the team captains. “They have done a nice job of leading our team this year,” said

Compton. With a young squad, Mankato Loyola/Cleveland will be looking to gain some varsity experience. That little varsity experience does not affect some of the team’s top returning runners. Kyla Haas is entering her freshman season and she has already been to the state meet twice. Another Freshman, Landon Javens, also participated at the state meet last season. “Kyla and Landon are both hard working members of our team who can lead by example,” said Compton. Mankato Loyola/Cleveland has already been successful this season; the boys have won the Crusader Invitational and the NRHEG Invite. “We are excited about the development of the younger runners, and look forward to the remainder of the season.” The Mankato Loyola Crusaders are coming off a disappointing 0-9 season and the loss of their last 19 games going into the

2014 season. The Crusaders have 17 seniors on the squad and these seniors are looking to turn things around at Loyola. The Crusaders are currently sitting with a 2-3 record with big game against number six-ranked Maple River in class AA on October 3 in Mapleton, and then another against number ten-ranked Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial at Mankato Loyola. Senior quarterback John Fink will lead the offense into a season that has already seen some success, with the 19 game losing streak snapped with a 23-14 win over Bethlehem Academy. Loyola will use the experi-

ence of the 17 seniors to remain competitive for the rest of the year and hopefully use the momentum built from the losing streak snapped, to move forward come playoff time. Mankato Loyola Volleyball The Mankato Loyola Volleyball team saw lots of success during the 2013 season -- they finished off the year with 21-8-1 record, including a playoff win against Springfield. They will hopefully use the success from a season ago and turn that into another successful season in 2014. The Crusaders are led by a small group of seniors; Megan Schroeder, Lexi Clow and An-

issa Giefer are looking to lead the team and build on the success they have had from the previous year. These girls aren’t doing too bad of a job at that either, as they are currently sitting with a 6-7 record and have a big match against Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Thursday, October 2. With that 6-7 record and a 6-4 section record, the Crusaders are currently sitting in the middle of the pack of section 2A north. They also make the trip to St. Clair to participate in the St. Clair Tournament on Saturday October 4 for a little tune-up before playoff time.

Mankato Loyola Girls Soccer The Mankato Loyola/St. Clair/LCWM girls soccer team struggled with a tough schedule last year and had 4-11-1 record during the 2013 season, but the girls were able to rally and upset a solid Fairmont Area team in the playoffs, and took a very good Albert Lea team all the way into extra time before losing in a shootout. Hopefully, they will be able to use that momentum from the 2013 season during their 2014 campaign. The girls have been able to do just that, currently sitting with

an 8-5-1 record, and will finish out their season at home playing against Fairmont Area on Tuesday, September 30 and their final game of the season is versus New Ulm on Thursday, October 2. Mankato Loyola/St. Clair/ LCWM has been able to keep up this good record with only one senior on the squad, Emily Gaspar. This young team has learned the varsity ropes quickly and have been able to perform at a pretty high level. If they are able to keep this up they will be able to lock down a home field playoff match.

Giants still looking for first victory said May. Offensively, the Giants are a bit unorthodox, running a pistol offense. “We are about a 60-40 running team. It is a bit different than the rest of our conference (running the Pistol) but it fits us well.” The Giants have experience but need a couple young guys to step up. “We have some holes where guys have graduated, so a couple of young guys will have to step up and fill those holes,” said May. LeSueur-Henderson has six guys playing both ways and everyone else on the squad rotates in. “We want everyone to find their own little piece of success,”

said May. With small numbers and playing in a bigger conference, it is tough for the Giants, but that is not slowing them down. In fact, they use the good competition to get ready for playoffs. LeSueur-Henderson Volleyball In 2013, the Giants carried a 10-19-2 record, and they will be looking to improve on that coming into the 2014 season. LeSueur-Henderson is looking to avenge their loss to state tournament participant Belle Plaine in 2013 and they will use the experience of five seniors to do that.

Senior quarterback and middle linebacker Ty-

ler Eccles will be a big leader for LeSueur-Henderson this season. “Tyler is a guy that we look at to make a lot of plays for us on the defensive side of the ball.” Senior running back Jordan Kahlow is a big leader on the offensive player for the Giants. “Jordan has started for three years now, he does everything right and leads our team in rushing,” said May. “He is a guy we look to get the ball too.” Senior lineman Clayton Colling is a big leader for the Giants too, who has been starting for two years. “Clayton is a big physical kid and he might not fill up the stat sheet but he is our vocal leader,”

The Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers Volleyball team has a lot of experience to this year’s team, and it has paid off so far. The 15-4 Buccaneers have continued to dominate their conference this season, but with only two seniors on the team. Out of the 14 players on the

team, there are 9 juniors. This should translate into further success next season. “Our offensive play is definitely a strong suit this season,” says Crystal Lamont, head volleyball coach. “We have six strong shooters and we have a very balanced team.” The team’s two Captains this season are senior Hayley Taylor and junior Katie Elwood. Coach Lamont

goes on to talk about other elements that would play into the girls’ success this season. “We have an athletic bunch, and we are translating our success on offense into defense, and we are slowly getting better.” The girls have had great expectations for the season, and

St. James: An up and down season story

The Saints' football team is still looking for their first victory of the season. DEREK LAMBERT Staff Writer

The Saint James Area Saints volleyball team has built themselves a pretty decent season this

fall. At 11-7, the Saints sit in first place of the Big South Conference with a 7-2 league record.

Photo Courtesy of SPX According to the Minnesota High School League website, St. James High School enrolls 272 students and was founded in 1896.

The success the Saints have had is due in large part to the veteran lineup they carry. Saint James has eight seniors and five juniors on their squad, with sophomore Desirae Mortenson being the lone underclassmen on the team. Senior setter Emily Bottem has been providing the Saints with a large number of assists each match, while junior Julia Beckius has been chipping in by leading the team in kills. Only four matches remain before the conference tournament begins, where the Saints will be a favorite to take home the Big South Conference title before beginning Section 3AA play. The Saint James girl’s tennis squad has also found success on the court this fall. The Saints have compiled an astonishing 20-2-4 record on the court in 2014, which included a 20-match winning streak after starting the season 0-2. With the Section 3A tournament coming up next week at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, the Saints hope they can carry their dominant play all

the way to the state tournament on October 21. Saint James hasn’t had as good of luck on the gridiron, however. The Saints’ football team has gotten off to a 0-5 start, including being outscored 106-0 over their last two games. Though, with two home games coming up, perhaps their luck will make a turn for the better. The first two games of the season were played at home for the Saints, and in these games they were able to put up a better fight. The season opener was a 50-25 loss to a much larger, suburban school in Brooklyn Center, followed by a 33-8 home loss to conference rival Luverne. With their home crowd behind them, the Saints just may be able to put a couple of tallies in the win column before the season comes to an end.

MINNESOTA VALLEY LUTHERAN "The Minnesota Valley Chargers maybe haven't gotten off to the start they were hoping for on the gridiron, but there certainly isn't reason to worry just yet. at 6-0. The season will be rounded out for MVL when they play a 1-4 Sleepy Eye squad. The Charger Volleyball squad may not be able to get back to .500, but they can still finish out their season on a high note. At 3-10-1 and 1-7 in the Tomahawk Conference, MVL has five matches to even out their record a bit before heading into Section

2A play. With a junior heavy roster and Brittany Sanders being the lone sophomore on the team, the Chargers have reason to look forward to the remaining matches and coming back next season with a very veteran lineup. But for now MVL looks ahead to their remaining games that includes four league matchups against Sleepy Eye, Sibley

East, Buffalo Lake-Hector Stewart, and Springfield, which could help them climb the conference standings. The Chargers will conclude their regular season with a nonconference matchup at home versus Nicollet before heading into sectional play on October 15.

The Boys Maple River wrestling team had a very impressive season last year with five state qualifiers and winning the Gopher Conference and their re-

spective section. Maple River wrestling finished last year with a 14-4 dual meet record and won the Gopher Conference. They had 5 individuals qual-

ify for state and 2 of those place in the top 3 in the state. “We are looking forward to another successful season this year where we expect to be in the mix for the Gopher Conference

title and top 4 section finish.” Says head coach Dan Robbins The captains this season will be Derek Moore, Russell Caldwell and Noah Greenfield. These 3 guys are hard workers and Head Wrestling Coach Robbins expects them to lead the team both on the mat and in the classroom.

Noah and Russell both qualified for state individually last season and we expect the same again this year. "We also will have many 7th - 9th graders who will make an impact on the varsity this year" say coach.

LCWM Knights are flourishing so far in 2014 Everything is going the volleyball team's way with a 19-5-1 record in 2014. JOHN WALFOORT Staff Writer Lake Crystal Wellcom Memorial’s Volleyball team is dominating 2014. Right now they are 19-5-1 with a section record of 14-2 and 7-1 in conference. Last year the Knights went 27-5 during the regular season and lost in sections to Martin County West. Martin County West ended up making it to state. LCWM lost to Martin County West 3-1 in the Sibley East Tournament so they will be a tough obstacle for this team to overcome to make it to state.

LCWM’s football team has been playing well this year, so far its record is 4-2. The Knights also have a conference record of 2-2. In the Knight’s first game they started out strong by shutting out Kimball Area 31-0. They were on a four game win streak until they faced Maple River where they lost a close game 13-12, Maple River is currently undefeated. The next week they lost to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, who is 4-2. So far the Knights have surpassed their overall record from last year where they only won two games. The Knights will have to keep winning if they want to make it to state this year, but they are on the right track so far. They season high for points is 41 right now and low 13.

St. Peter's having a great fall season JOHN WALFOORT Staff Writer The St. Peter Volleyball team has started its 2014 campaign off strong. St. Peter is 16-2 and 6-0 in the Big South Conference. St. James is the only school ahead of St. Peter, but only by one win. Last season the Saints finished the season 17-9-2, 9-1 in the Big South Conference. Two athletes have a great chance at breaking school records this season. Brooklyn Braun has a good shot at breaking a school record in digs and service points. Earlier this year Braun was elected to the top six breakdown elite team and has committed to play for Minnesota State University, Mankato. Olivia Hass has a good chance to break school records in solo blocks and kills. The St. Peter cross country team has a promising senior that is looking to go back to state this season. Senior Abby Borgmeieir is on pace right now to be the second fastest runner in Saint’s

history. Borgmeieir was all conference last season and looks as if she will have another successful season. St. Peter’s boy’s soccer team is 5-4-1, 3-2-1 in the Big South Conference so far on the season. The boy’s team has shut three teams out this year. Lamont goes into detail, saying how this year’s team has turned into a family kind of bond. Junior Mercedes Morsching is leading the team this year in serve in percentage, with a 97.6% clip in 82 chances. Senior captain Haley Taylor has had the most chances at 199, but still sporting a 91% success rate. Taylor has also collected

the most points off a serve this season, with 80. “She’s a good role model for the “She’s a good role model for the young players, and works hard day in and day out,” Lamont says about her senior captain. Junior Kamryn Kendall, Sophomore Kate Masberg and Junior Erika Olson have all stayed busy this season with earning the most kills. Masberg leads the team with 127, followed by 123 by Kendall and 69 by Olson. The best passer on the team is also Olsen, as she also adds a defensive element to the team as well. “Erika gives us a great defensive presence in our lineup,” Lamont adds. Olson is also tied for the team lead in blocks with junior teammate Haley Domonoske, each with 10. This season the Buccaneers

made the Subsection Championship, but could not come out victorious as they lost all three sets to Le Sueur-Henderson. This team will continue to grow for the next season however, as there are only two seniors leaving this season. Coach Lamont adds “We are all growing together, and it is continuous process.” Next up this season however for WEM is the Cannon Falls Tournament the weekend of the 4th of October and wrapping up their regular season with Waseca, Blooming Prairie and Medford. Blooming Prairie will be the game to watch, as they currently lead the Gopher Conference. That game is on October 9th.

New Ulm looks for a brighter 2014

The 2014 New Ulm Eagles currently carry a 1-3 record, getting their first win of the year versus Fairmont on September 26, 41-26. The Eagles are led with nine seniors, including running backs Matt Rowley and Jonah Cooper. The Eagles are coach by Anthony Ortmann and still have three games remaining on their schedule. They take on a 4-1 Blue Earth Area team on Friday, October 10, before moving on to a rematch of the playoffs from a season ago, traveling to Marshall to take on an undefeated team on Wednesday, October 15.

During their 2013 campaign, the New Ulm Eagles finished with 13-14-1. The New Ulm volleyball team is still on a learning curve. New head coach Melissa Boddy is looking for this team to become a strong force. “We want to become a strong force, work together, and create friendships,” said Boddy. “Our goals for this season are to build fundamentals, have fun, and X learn life lessons through the sport of volleyball.” Learning is a key component for the team this year, as they have four seniors who are trying out new positions. “Our seniors are trying out

new positions this season, which creates a learning experience for everyone. Being a new coach means we have new drills, offense, defense, and plays,” said Boddy. The Eagles have Alley Gretjtak (237 assist on the year) to set to a group of hitters led by Emily Bertrang (56 kills), Bailey Hofmeister (48 kills), and Brooke Schugel (76 kills). The Eagles are solid defensively and are led by Briana Sieve (172 digs) and Brooke Schugel (101 digs). Boddy is excited about bringing “fresh eyes and new opportunities” to the program. The Eagles currently carry a 5-11 record in the 2014 season. The team is young and ready to learn, with only 4 seniors on the

squad, the younger members on the team will have to step up to help make the Eagles season a success. “We want to learn the fundamental skills of volleyball and foster learning,” said Boddy. New Ulm Football The 2013 Eagles struggled piling together a 0-9 record, including a 59-9 loss to Marshall in the 2AAAA playoffs. They will be looking to avenge that coming into the 2014 season. Improvement has already shown this season, as they now carry a 1-4 mark. As most sports fans know, once you are able to get that first monkey off of your back, the wins can start to come in bunches.

Sleepy Eye: Ending and starting droughts The Sleepy Eye football team has snapped a rough drought and the volleyball team is one of their own droughts. LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer The 2013 Sleepy Eye Indians are coming off a disappointing 0-9 season, and sadly, they were on an 18 game losing streak headed into the 2014 season. That losing streak reached 20 games, but they were able to defeat Wabasso 54-40 on Friday, September 19. “Injuries have really hurt us over the past couple of seasons,” said head coach Cory Haala. In 2012, 2013 and the start of this season, the Indians have lost their starting quarterback to major injuries. “This year during the second game of the season, we lost our starting quarterback, junior Austin Fischer, to a concussion and neck injury,” said Haala. “Hopefully he can come back for the end of the season.” The Indians are relying on a heavy run game to get them the production needed to win games. Senior running back Matt Berkner ran for 330 yards in a

school single game record performance. The team also rushed for 479 yards, which happens to be a school record. “Hopefully we can use this win to springboard us to a few more victories this season” said Haala. They will use the core of a young team of 9 seniors, 11 juniors, 7 sophomores, and 17 freshmen on their roster to help guide them this season. “We had a very young team last season and we lost only two senior starters.” Some teams to watch out for in the Southern Minnesota Conference this season are New Ulm Cathedral and Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s, who are both undefeated up to this point. The Indians currently carry a 1-3 record headed into a game on Friday, September 26 against Martin County West in Sherburn.

JWP will use a balanced attack in 2014, just like 2013’s campaign where they averaged 326 yards a game as a team, earning 150 yards passing and 176 yards rushing. JWP is looking to improve on a defense that gave up 320 yards a game. “We want to be a competitive team, be in every game. We want to win that first playoff game,” said Joyce.

LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer

The Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Bulldog football team is looking to improve on 2013’s 5-4 record, and round one loss in the Class A, Section 2 playoff game to Springfield. Coach Joe Joyce is looking for this year’s team to get better. “We want to get better and better every day,” Joyce said. Joyce has been working all season on the kids doing the fundamentals of the game correctly. “We are focusing on the process and not the results. We want our kids to do things the right way and the result will come,” said Joyce. “We don’t want the kids to worry about wins and losses, we want them to do everything to the best of their ability and the wins will come.” The Bulldogs’ leadership will consist of a trio of seniors this season. Ehthan Schuch is coming off an impressive 2013 campaign, last year as a junior. Schuch tallied 50 tackles and 11 sacks on the defensive line. Schuch is also a key component on the offensive line. Senior Zach Janike will get most of the carries as the lead running back for the Bulldogs. Last season Janike put together 60 carries for 347 yards -- an impressive 5.8 yards per carry. Janike also will be a key linebacker this season, where he put together 83 tackles last season,

JWP Volleyball The JWP Volleyball team is looking to improve on 5-16-1 record from a 2013 campaign and the Bulldogs have been doing that. The Bulldogs will rely on a couple of key players to make their move in Section 2.

The Bulldogs bring back seven seniors from a year ago to use that experience to their advantage in 2014. Thus far, it has been working. The Bulldogs currently have an 8-3 record the week before heading into the St. James tournament. JWP looks to be in the mix in section 2A, sitting with a 7-1 record against sections team. The Bulldogs play the team that knocked them out of the playoffs in 2013, Madelia, on October 2. They then take on Lake CrystalWellcome Memorial in a big section match on Monday, October 6.

USC Rebels competing hard in 2014 The football team looks to change things around with two games left in the season. JOEY DENTON Sports Editor The United South Central volleyball team has moved into a new school in hope of having a new kind of season. After a .500 record in 2013, the squad looks to leave everything behind. But it hasn’t been the smoothest season for new head coach Amy Anderson as her squad is looking at a 5-13-1 record in 2014, but there is still some season left to end on a good note. T According to Anderson, this team is one hard-working group of girls. “The team works very hard in practice to improve their skills and they are not afraid to try something different to make themselves better,” Anderson said. “They each put their team ahead of themselves.” This team also doesn’t shy away talent wise. “Anissa Janzig and Taylor Steckelberg are the team captains. Anissa has verbally committed to Minnesota State University in Mankato,” Anderson said. “She is a strong middle hitter, blocker, jump serves and is a great leader on and off the court. Taylor Steckelberg has stepped up as our outside hitter. She has been considerably strong and consistent from the serving line and also leads well on and off the court.” When the Rebels aren’t com-

peting on the court, they really enjoy helping the younger girls get better for the program. “This USC volleyball team enjoys helping the younger grades with fundamentals and showing them that you shouldn’t settle for anything but getting better and playing above and beyond your total best,” Anderson said. The school’s football team is currently 1-5 in their 2014 campaign. After losing to a good Blue Earth Area team 49-7, the Rebels earned their first victory of the season over Mankato Loyola 21-13. They only have two weeks to turn things around, starting with St. Clair visiting on Friday. Head coach Brad Huse’s squad is relatively young with just 11 seniors on the roster.

The boy’s cross country team is comprised with two seniors (Adam Stevermer and Brian Remington), Thomas Mantor is the lone junior, one sophomore in Chris Mulholland, two freshmen (Caleb Hubbard and Jonathan Schwartz) and John Mantor is a freshman. Head coach Rita Augustine also has quite the range of ages on her girls’ team. Amber Klein is a senior, Beth Stevermer is a freshman and Tikvah Schwartz is a junior. Both squads actually host a meet in Wells today, and that starts at 4:30 p.m.

Mountain Lake DEREK LAMBERT Staff Writer The Mountain Lake Area Wolverines have been nearly perfect on the gridiron this fall. After dropping their season opener to Edgerton/Ellsworth, Mountain Lake has gone 4-0 since. Most notable is that over those four victories, the Wolverines have scored 201 points while only allowing 43 against. Sitting in second place in the Southern Minnesota Confederacy Conference, the Wolverines only have three games remaining in the regular season before a hopeful playoff run begins in the Section 3 9-man tournament, leading up to the State Tournament Prep Bowl at TFC Bank Stadium in November. Led by sophomore quarterback Levi Stoesz, the Wolverines don’t let their youth behind center hold them back, as their high scoring offense shows. Senior running backs Caleb Bargen and Jared Willaby provide an experienced, veteran run game, while senior tight end Eric Wenner provides a good outlet for scoring as well. Among the Wolverines’ remaining games lies a matchup with undefeated Madelia, who

sits atop the MSC conference. As they are now, the Wolverines would need to win that game to win a share of the conference crown this fall. Wolverines volleyball hasn’t quite found the same success yet this fall. At 0-9-1 on the court, Mountain Lake has yet to find their niche. “The girls are still getting used to things, so hopefully things smooth out soon,” said coach Kristin Pfeiffer. Juniors Signey Stoesz and Carmen Syverson have been leaders on this Wolverine squad as they try and earn their first victory of the 2014 season. “The big thing right now is we need to learn how to capitalize on the other teams’ mistakes and maintain our own momentum,” said Pfeiffer. With two weeks remaining in the regular season before Section 2A play, Mountain Lake still has time to get on a bit of a roll heading into the postseason.

Bethany Lutheran 2014 fall preview JOEY DENTON Sports Editor So far this fall, Bethany Lutheran’s pride and joy has been their men’s golf game. After sitting with a 2-6-1 record, the Vikings started a three-game winning streak, outscoring their opponents 13 to 5. They have averaged 12.1 shots per game and have 23 goals so far this season compared to their opponent’s 35. The squad has been led offensively by Nicole Moldstad, who has 21 points with six goals and nine assists. She also more than doubles Bridget Hennen in shots taken, who is second on the team, with 42. Henne is second on the team in terms of points with seven goals.

Her shot percentage is much better than Moldstad though with a 35 shooting percentage. Averi Cash and Megan Zeller have been splitting time as goalkeeper this season and neither one is rightfully looking to take the spot full time. In six starts, Zeller is 3-2-0 with a 2.41 goals allowed average and has 31 saves and one shutout. Cash, who has just five starts, owns a 1-31 record with one shutout and 2.59 goals against average. She has more saves with 34.

MSU Men's and Women's Cross Country On welcoming the new freshman on the team Samantha said, “We have worked to build an excellent team atmosphere so that everyone is able to contribute and give their best.” Head coach Blue is looking for encouragement like this to help transition the incoming runners to a good start. “We have a very good incoming group and all are looking pretty promising, once we can mesh their talent with the core of our returners, I believe we can have a pretty impactful team,” Blue said. After finishing 6th overall in last year’s conference meet, The Mavs finished 9th at the 2014 NCAA Division II regional meet. The lady Mavericks are placed 6th in the 2014 Preseason coach’s poll, but are hoping to break top 3 in the conference this year. The men’s cross country team is gearing up for the

DENZELL CASTRO-OATS Staff Writer Jen Blue is ready to start yet another campaign with the ladies of the Mavericks cross country team. Going into her 10th year as head coach, she is not slowing down and is looking to lead the group to another successful season. “Although we lost a couple of key runners from last year in Dejong and Bowler, We have a talented group of returners in Samantha Soupir, Kimberly Allan, Marina Paul and Maddi Sjelin,” Blue said. At last year’s conference meet, it was Soupir leading the Lady Mavs, coming in at 18th (22:17.64). Paul came in 33rd (22:54.79), followed by Sjelin in 46th (23:19.14), and Allan in at 50th (23:30.61). Blue is also looking to mesh her returning crew with some new faces added to the team. "We've also added some freshmen in Megan Allen, Erin Baker and Mariah Betzler who all had very successful high school careers and will be tremendous assets to our team,” Blue said. Allen, a freshman from Grand Rapids, Minn., will bring her speed and endurance to the team this year. She also will be an asset to the Maverick’s track team with her talent in the 800, where she has a personal best of 2:14.11. Also from Grand Rapids, Baker was a three-time state cross country qualifier for the Thunder Hawks and also qualified in last year’s high school state track and field meet in the 800 with her fellow teammate Allen. Betzler of Monticello was a two-time state

2014 season. Head coach Loren Ahonen has assembled a team that he is predicting to be a topthree in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. “The group of guys we have this year is an interesting one,” Ahonen said. “On one end of the spectrum we have a lot of young guys out of high school that are all very talented, and on the other we have a very strong veteran upperclassmen group.” Senior co-captain Josiah Swanson is one of the upperclassmen looking to help the Mavericks this season. “We’re young, but we have a lot of potential,” Swanson said. “We have a great group of returners leading the younger guys who are doing a great job of adapting to coach Ahonen’s system.” The 12-man team consists of

cross-country qualifier and twotime Nike National Regional Qualifier and also qualified in 2011 for the Nike National Cross Country Meet. Senior captain Soupir, who has been added to the 2014 NSIC watch list, feels confident

about entering her last cross season. “This year we are approaching it as a new year, and a chance to be the best team we can be”, said Soupir. “The dynamic on this team I feel will give us the opportunity for a great season.”

Minnesota State Football The MSU football team is looking to add their third-straight undefefeated regular season to their resume. JOEY DENTON Sports Editor The Minnesota State University, Mankato football team hit a rocky road this past spring, going through coaching changes and losing key players, but it’s late August and now the team can now just keep their focus on football and their 2014 campaign. After missing two seasons with the Mavericks, head coach Todd Hoffner feels “energized and rejuvenated” and is excited to be walking across Stadium Street and into his office again. “We’re very forward thinking. Players want to focus on the games and I want to focus on the games… I want to help these young men be great people, great students and great football players, and that is where my focus is and that’s where the rest of our staff is and obviously winning is a tremendous byproduct of how you do things and hopefully we’ll do things the right way,” Hoffner said. Replacing Legends The 2013 roster handled the NSIC Coach of the Year, NSIC Offensive Player of the Year and the NSCI Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and not one of them is on the 2014 roster. Replacing players like quarterback Jon Wolf and defensive end Chris Schaudt is impossible but this program is at the level where they have multiple players that can compete for those spots, which according to Hoffner, enhances productivity. First, the squad hasn’t solidified their starting quarterback but have narrowed it down to two fi-

nalists. Sophomore Nick Pieruccini was competing with Mitch Brozovich during the spring, but Brozovich decided to take his talents elsewhere. But Hoffner and his staff brought in junior Ricky Lloyd, who transferred from Southern Mississippi, to also compete for the starting spot. Pieruccini only saw action in two games in 2013 but has had two impressive performances in their annual spring game, including completing 5-of-10 passes for 47 yards this past May. Before suffering a seasonending injury, Lloyd put up 277 passing yards and went 22-for44 on his passes with one touchdown and three interceptions for Southern Mississippi. In high school he led the state of California in passing yards with 4,451 yards. Both guys are competing hard, which is making it a tough decision for Hoffner and his staff. “We still haven’t crossed that bridge yet. We’re still developing both of these young men, and they’re both doing a tremendous job in Nick Perucini and Ricky Lloyd,” Hoffner said. “They’re both doing outstanding work so they’re performance has been elevated… Both of them just want our team to win and they want us to be successful.” When it came to the defensive end position, the Mavericks will fortunate enough to have Schaudt and junior Josh Gordon’s names on the depth chart. Now with Schaudt graduated, Gordon needs to be ready to anchor that position and help push the other guys to compete for the other side, and according to Hoffner, that is Gordon’s strength.

Trevor Cokley • MSU Reporter

“Josh Gordon is definitely a leader in that group and so we are looking for great things out of him from leadership and also from a performance standpoint,” Hoffner said. In 11 games Gordon made 47 tackles and nine of them for a loss and forced two fumbles. Hoffner has four guys competing to play opposite of Gordon, including senior Shonquille Dorsey and sophomore Colt Nero who both made good strides in 2013. (New) Staff Meeting The squad had to fill both the offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator positions this spring and Jason Eck and Jake Dickert were the winners. Eck

MSU women's soccer Steele, a defender, logged 1,817 minutes in 2013 while helping MSU post 11 shutouts and a stingy goals against average of .75 goals against per game. Steele was also named the preseason pick for NSIC Defensive Player of the Year. Moris collected five goals, including two game winners, to go along with 15 points in 22 starts while finishing second on the team in shots with 86. With second year head coach Brian Bahl having a season and an NCAA Tournament appearance under his belt; the Mavs were selected to finish first in the 2014 NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Perhaps Bahl’s biggest asset returning for the Mavs is between the pipes in senior goalkeeper Molly McGough. The Centennial, Colo. native collected 7.1 shutouts in 2013 during 18 starts to go along with a .781 save percentage and an .88 goals against average. McGough has been climbing the national

record charts throughout her career as well, with her 32 career shutouts ranking 15th all time in NCAA Division II and her .56 career goals against average ranks 20th all time. The senior also is in good position to become the all-time leader in shutouts in the NSIC, needing six shutouts this season to break the current record. With the Mavs’ leaders on the pitch returning this season along with 15 other players who saw minutes last season, 2014 looks to be a good season for MSU Soccer. The preseason accolades have set the bar high, but the Mavs will look to live up to the high expectations.

DEREK LAMBERT Staff Writer The Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks soccer team is back on the field this fall after an incredible season in 2013. After posting an astonishing .818 winning percentage with a record of 17-3-2, the Mavs went on to win the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament with wins over Minot State, Upper Iowa, and a championship shootout victory over the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Receiving a first round bye in the NCAA Tournament, Minne-

sota State was among the final 16 teams in the NCAA when their season was ended by Southwest Minnesota State University in a 2-1 loss during the second round of the tournament. Though the loss ended the Mavericks’ season too soon, there is reason to believe 2014 will be just as successful. MSU starts their season ranked 15th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and returns five NSCAA All-Central Region players to form a deep lineup this season. First team All-Central Region forward Korey Kronforst

returns for her junior season after leading the team and NSIC in scoring last season. Kronforst posted 18 goals and 43 points in 22 games, all of which she started, collecting NSIC Offensive Player of the Year and Daktronics First Team All-American honors. With her outstanding season, Kronforst was the first Maverick in program history to be named a First Team AllAmerican and ranked eighth nationally in scoring. Seniors Bre Steele and Emily Moris also add to the Mavericks’ depth, being named NSCAA First Team All-Central Region.

MSU Volleyball: using big wins for momentum Some big, early-season victories has put the Mavericks on the right track going into the NSIC schedule. LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer The Minnesota State University, Mankato volleyball team ended last season with a 13-15 record finishing 8th in the NSIC, but is geared up and ready to go for the 2014 season. Dennis Amundson is entering his 10th season as head coach for the Mavericks, and is looking for his team to improve thoroughly throughout the year. “Our goal every year to improve and get better,” Amundson said. With a young team on his hands for another year, improvement will be the key contributor come playoff time. With a young team returning, the Mavericks will be looking at junior Setter Ellie Van De Steeg to facilitate the offensive. “Our entire offense is ran through Ellie. She will be a key contributor this season,” Amundson said. Last season Ellie did it all for the Mavericks; an All-NSIC team pick in 2012 and an AllNSIC second team pick in 2013. She also led the team with a 10.76 assist per set average, 23 service aces, 181 digs, along with 59 kills herself during the 2013 campaign. Van De Steeg will be setting

to top returning hitters Krista Hassing and Chandra Honebrink. Hassing returns to run the middle for the Mavericks this season and was third on the team last year, putting up 157 kills (1.94 per set) along with a solid defensive game putting up 7 solo blocks and 44 assisted blocks. Hassing teamed with Honebrink hope to be a killing duo for the Mavericks. Honebrink, an outside hitter, is coming off an impressive season where she had 304 kills (3.23 per set) in 26 matches played. Honebrink also tallied 177 digs and 32 total blocks. The Mavericks open the season in Golden, Colo. where they will play four matches starting Sept. 5 against Dominican from San Rafael, Cali. and a match against Bentley from Waltham, Mass. “Playing in Colorado is great for our team. It will give us information on how are team stacks up, where we can improve. It gives us our window into how your team is doing and where the team is headed,” Amundson said. The Mavericks then open at home for the Maverick Invitational against Upper Iowa on September 12th – 13th. The Mavericks open conference play against Concordia – St. Paul on September 16th in the Taylor

Center. With a majority of the young Maverick squad returning, their youth will have to step up and gain the experience needed to compete in the NSIC, which the Mavericks were ranked 8th in the Preseason Poll. Although they are young, the Mavericks are ready to win now. “We are expecting to make some noise this year in the NSIC,” hitter Tiana Runck said. “After a rebuilding season last year, our team is ready to go and definitely hungry for victory and revenge.”

MSU FOOTBALL “We're very forward thinking. Players want to focus on the games, and I want to focus on the games.. I want to help these young men be great people, great students and great football players, and that is where my focus is and that's where the rest of our staff is," Hoffner said. continued from 32 was, and still is, the offensive line coach, but this spring game he got to add making the play calls to his list of duties of an offensive coordinator. Dickert got his first defensive coordinator gig at Augustana last season and led them to the NCAA Division II top 20 list for points allowed per game with 19.5. Hoffner likes his new staff. “Work with the coaches is outstanding,” Hoffner said. “They’ve been putting our players in great positions, we’ve had a very physical (camp) and I think it’s been just the right amount of everything that we are doing from a practice standpoint and preparing for our opponent.” Three-headed Dragon The Mavericks averaged 294.7 rushing yards per game, second in the NSIC, and scored 43 touchdowns on the ground in 2014. Even though Wolf was the rushing leader, all three running backs in Andy Pfeiffer, Connor Thomas and Chad Zastrow are back in Purple and Gold. “When it comes to our running backs we have a full stable of running backs… Those guys are learning,” Hoffner said. “They want to know what their role is and we are going to put them in position to make plays.” Thomas led the way for the three-headed rushing attack with 956 rushing yards and averaged 7.1 yards a carry with 10 touchdowns. Pfeiffer finished with 509 yards and six touchdowns and Zastrow averaged 7.2 yards a carry and finished 2013 with 465 yards and four touchdowns.

NCAA Division II regional meet, and Devin Allbaugh, who was a part of the team that finished third at the 2012 NCAA Division II Regional meet where he individually finished 28th. The Mavs are gaining four key freshmen this year in Michael Hoff, Austin Pasch, Edoardo Tagliaferri and Connor Westlake. Hoff, of Mounds View, is a three-time state Cross country qualifier and was a part of the 2013 Mounds View Team that finished seventh in the state. He will also bring his skill in the 800m dash where he runs a 1:55.

Westlake from Johnston, Iowa was a two-time state qualifier both individually and with his team his junior and senior year in high school. He also has experience on the track in the 1600m and 3200m where he was also was a state qualifier in both events. Pasch from Westby High School in Wisconsin qualified in last year’s Wisconsin state meet for Division III, finishing in the top 30. He also is a state track and field qualifier, qualifying in the 1600m placing 10th, and in the 3200m placing 4th. Tagliaferri, a freshman from Stillwater high school was a part of Stillwater’s dominate state placing cross country team his sophomore and junior year. Senior co-caption Matt Stocker is impressed with the freshmen’s work ethic and talent. “They’ve added a lot to our team and heighten our chances of cracking the top three in the conference this year,” Stocker said. “We’ve always been a solid team but now that we have more depth, I’m excited to see what we can do with it.” Ahonen is going into his second year as the Cross Country head coach but carries a lot of past experience. Aside from his many accomplishments on the track, upon graduating from

Western State, he stayed there to start his coaching career. As an assistant for men’s track and field
