Mankato Loyola cross country teams gear up for the 2015 season

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer The cross country teams at Mankato Loyola are almost in synch with each other, as head coach Dale Compton puts it. “We would like to pick up where we left off last season. We had a young team last year on both the boys’ and girls’ teams and the athletes gained a lot of varsity experience. We are hoping that experience pays off this season.” On the boys’ team this season, there is not even a senior present on the roster. The roster contains two juniors, five sophomores, two freshmen, four eighth graders and two seventh graders. The team

is still very young, but out of most of them there are returners. Sophomore Landon Javens is returning from a state meet appearance. Landon has qualified the past two years. There was also an All-Conference winner last season in Javens. Three boys were also All-Conference Honorable Mention in junior Coleton Giefer, sophomore Brady Omtvedt and freshman Micah Rentschler. Sophomore Patrick Cullen will be a nice contributor on the varsity team for 2015. Compton also adds “A couple of our middle school athletes from last season will help give us some depth on the varsity roster (Carter Deichman and Brett Omtvedt).” As for the girls, there is one senior in Ester Archer. Otherwise there are two juniors, three sophomores and three eighth graders. Sophomore Kyla Haas is returning from a state meet appearance last season, and she has been a state meet qualifier the past three seasons. Haas also won All-Conference last season, along with sophomore team-

and talent is very much relevant also. Some key dates for the Cross Country teams include the Crusader Invitational which happened September 18th. There is another date on interest to include for the Crusaders, which will be on October 22nd and it will be the Gopher Valley Conference meet hosted by USC. Last season the girls’ team finished second in the meet, and the boys’ team finished fifth in Section 2A. Both teams will be looking to always improve, and this year could be another step in that process. It also could be a year that surprises not only others, but themselves in what they can accomplish. Compton coaches both teams, so there is no surprise that both teams are very similar in a lot of ways. Especially this season, as there is equally good enough talent on the boy’s team and girl’s. West soccer looking to get back to state tournament 2 after defeating Monticello 4-0. Their championship hopes would come to a halt though after losing in round 2. Mankato West took on the eventual winners St. Cloud Apollo, and fell short after themselves getting shutout 0-1. They played in the consolation game though, but still couldn’t edge out a victory. Mankato West played against Chaska, but this time they would tie the game at 1-1. The 2015-16 season is currently under way, and as of writing the Scarlets are off to a good start, but aren’t going to match the amazing record of last season. Right now the Scarlets are sitting on a 7-21 record, with plenty of time left in the season to improve that even more.

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer The Mankato West Scarlet’s boys soccer team are coming off quite the season that saw a lot of ups, with very few negatives. The team played phenomenally throughout the regular season tasting defeat only one time. Their sole loss came at the hands of Northfield 1-0 in a game that ended up going into overtime. They would chalk up a 15-1 regular season record. Other than that blemish, the team was a force to be reckon with. The boys would make it to the Class A - Section 2 boys soccer tournament in October of last year. The first game came against the New Ulm Eagles. The Scarlet’s proved to be no match for the Eagles taking

The team took home another victory, but this time much more hotly contested with the score being 1-0. The final round of the tour-

nament turned into a battle of the sides, as Mankato West took on Mankato East. The Scarlets came to play, and prove superior, taking home the tournament victory. Mankato West secured the victory with a 3-0 shutout

on Mankato East. The victory earned them a spot in the Minnesota Class A Boys Soccer tournament. Round 1 continued the Scarlet’s string of shutouts when they played Monticello. The Scarlets moved on to round

St. Peter fall sport ready to rock in 2015

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The St. Peter Saints are running on a winning record this year and look to keep it up with their last two conference games of the season. Important wins for the Saints have been against LeSueur-Henderson 30-14, Worthington 31-30, New Ulm 27-16 and Jordan 15-13. The boys’ two conference losses were tough. One came against Waseca 17-51 and the other was at home against Fairmont 7-28. Oddly both losses were at home, while three of their wins have been on the road. The Saints are coached by Brian Odland and assisted by Justin Helget, Greg Emley, Kurt Moelter and Pat Klubben.

Photo by SPX Photos The Saints are lucky to have many seniors to lead the team in their last season. Alex Hoehn, Noah Hildebrandt, Avery Bachman, Bradyn Klubben, Zeke Haugen, Colton Lusty, Mason Legg, Bill Chadwick, Dustin West, Nathaniel Wenner, Mitch Har-

low, Travis Brock, Alex Quist, Brady Hanson and Austin Peterson all continue to help the Saints to a winning season. Other key players for the Saints are Jake McCabe, Dylan Kuhl, Devin Aretz, Mohamed Daud, Antoine Williams, Parker Sisler, Bryce

Bortles, Ryan Conlon, Maccoy Blaschko, Matt Theis, Juan Martinez, Ben Zam and Peter Hilligoss. Senior quarterback Bachman has thrown 16 completed passes for 216 total yards. Bachman also leads with 388 yards rushing, followed by

Chadwick with 148, Hoehn with 120 and sophomore Alex Chadwick with 105. Noah Hildebrandt leads the Giants in receiving yards with 83, while Hoehn leads in defensive tackles. The Saints had a losing record last season and finished behind dominant Waseca, Blue Earth and Redwood Valley. They finished above St. James and New Ulm because they had one win while those teams had none. The Saints did not see action in the 2014-2015-section 3AAA tournament. However, if they keep a their momentum up they should be able to inch into the tournament. They currently sit behind two undefeated teams, Marshall and Tri-City United, and Waseca who has a 5-1 record. The Saints have to keep playing well because they are tied in the standings with Fairmont and Belle Plaine at 4-2. Any team could step up and take the lead. The lucky winners of the section tournament will get to play in the

JWP is looking to “get better everyday”

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer “Get better every day.” Those are the words of Head Football Coach Joe Joyce about his Bulldogs from Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton High School. They are looking to build on success with every aspect of the game, and compete on every down and improve every day. In the Mid-Southeast Conference, they are currently sitting at 1-4 on the season, with some close games that just have not gone their way. There is still time to recover and make a run in sections, as they are about half way through the regular season. The storyline of the season thus far is improving on de-

fense and capitalizing on the offensive side of the ball. “Our biggest match-ups we look for each game is our run game vs opponent’s run defense, and how our linebackers can stop the run,” Joyce explained. There are some key returning players this season that are impactful throughout every game. Senior running back/strong safety Ryan Eustice, senior offensive lineman/defensive lineman Nick Fredrick, senior offensive lineman/defensive lineman Jacob Guse, junior offensive lineman/defensive lineman Chad Guse, junior running back Tom Gannon and junior wide receiver/linebacker Alex Kjolstad are amongst those mentioned by Coach Joyce. Gannon has 82 rushes for 450 yards and seven touchdowns through the first few games. Kjolstad has 15 catches for 137 yards and a single score, while also recording 25 tackles, two sacks and three forced fumbles on defense. Eustice has racked up 28 tackles with one sack this season. Players that will make a difference as they are new-

comers are seniors Walker Miller (wide receiver/safety), and Connor Oldenburg (tight end/linebacker). There is also junior wide receiver/linebacker Andrew King, who will also

The season is at its halfway mark, and at 1-4 there is still time to turn around the Bulldog’s fortunes on the football field. They have remaining

Medford is still winless this season. Every other game the Bulldogs have played in a have been against better teams, but that should not mean anything at this point. As Coach Joyce has stated over and over again; every down matters. We will see if the Bulldogs can turn around their season and make a run into section playoffs. There is a lot of youth on this team, and that can only be built on moving towards future seasons at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton. They have lost by 16 points or less, so blowouts do not happen if they do find themselves in the losing circle at the end of the game. Their last win was week two of the season, so they will need to break this three game slide they currently find themselves in to move forward with success.

Blue Earth Volleyball looking to build off wins this season

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer The Buccaneers of Blue Earth Area Volleyball team has a simple philosophy“Work Hard, Play Harder.” That is according to their Head Coach Donna Nawrocki. Last season was not an easy year to go through for the Buccos. They finished 2-26 on the season, so the expectations of improvement were imminent for 2015. The majority of matches they were in resulted in 3-0 sweeps, and this season so far has seen improvements. They already have more wins than they recorded all last season, at 3-8. The team is still looking for its first road victory since they

won at New Ulm 3-0 on October 4th, 2012. Some key returning players this year will be sophomore setter Alissa Norman, sophomore middle Lindsey Norman, junior middle Samantha Ripley, junior outside hitter Kaylor Jacobs, junior outside hitter Samantha Barslou, sophomore right side Sofie Blair, and junior defensive specialist Lindsey Jacobs. Sophomore Maddi Oelke will provide some more help, as she is a newcomer to the varsity team. “This team is young and still building. Every match will be used for growth. We look at every conference match to be key,” Coach Nawrocki stated. They have not had a winning team in a few years, so it has been a growing, building project that is still in the works. Norman is a returning All-Big South Conference selection, so that should give Coach Nawrocki something to build off of as well. The team this season has seen its share of losing

streaks to begin the season. They lost the first two matches and then won one, followed by three more losses before their second win, then losing three more before they achieved their third win on the season. Hopefully, they can build off their last win against Fairmont and rack off a winning streak to change up the momentum. Their three wins this season are against Waseca high school, Vermillion high school and Fairmont high school. They are 0-3 on the road this season, and they still have plenty of games left to finally get that win on the road. Their upcoming matches include a trip to Waseca on September 29th, to St. Peter on the first of October, and a tournament to be held at Blue Earth on Saturday, October 3rd. Last season, the Buccaneers were 1-11 against their own conference. At 2-3 to start the season, there are definitely some steps in the right direction with the program.

‘‘‘This team is young and still building. Every match will be used for growth. We look at every conference match to be key,’ Coach Nawrocki stated.”

Scarlets looking to repeat as State Champs

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer Mankato West Scarlet’s football season is already under way, and what a year they are having. For those that followed the school last year this won’t come as much of a surprise. The team had an incredible 2014-15 season going 12-1 on the season, with their sole loss coming in the last game by a mere 2 points. On the contrary, in the 12 wins of their season the Scarlett’s won each game by an astonishing 47 points each. The Scarlett’s excellent season earned them a first round by in the Class AAAAA - Section 2 football championship. Their first game

would come in the second round against the Chanhassen Storm. The win wouldn’t come nearly as easy as they did in the regular season. Still, the Scarlett’s came out victorious with a 38-35 victory in what was a shoot out. The Championship game would pit Mankato West vs. Northfield Raiders. In the second game of the regular season Mankato West demolished Northfield with a 62-28 pounding. The championship game didn’t end up being as one sided, but the Scarlett’s still showed their dominance with a 42-21 victory. Mankato West later participated in the MN State Class AAAAA Football tournament. The first round was a cakewalk as they shutout Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars 48-0. The second round saw them square off against the St. Michael-Albertville Knights. They won the game by 5 points, 26-21, to advance to the championship game at TCF Stadium. In it, they squared off vs. Simley Spartans. The game was yet another one sided affair as

Photo by SPX Photos Mankato West took home the victory after defeating Simley 42-19. The team is currently mid way through the 2015-16 season. They’ve thus far won

five games, which puts them on a 10 game winning streak dating back to last season. Another huge accomplishment saw them place #1 in the Minnesota Class AAAAA

Football QRF Rankings out of 48 other teams.

St. Peter will play Jordan, Belle Plaine and Albert Lea in their last three games. The Giants square off at 7 p.m. in Belle Plaine Thursday. All-Conference player Alex Leeb is helping the St. Peter Saints to a winning regular season. The Saints are currently 5-1-2 on the season. They are sitting comfortably at third place in the Big South conference behind Worthington who has a perfect record and Waseca. Below the Saints sits New Ulm, Marshall, Mankato Loyola and Fairmont. Dave Borslien is this year’s head coach and besides Leeb there are ten other seniors on the squad. Alex Devens, Joe Siebels, Joseph More, Kaelan Weiss, Ezekiel Kyoore, Abdi Omar, Jordan Hermel, Jacob Marlow, Sanguja Hassan and Jacob Lamb are wearing their Saint’s jerseys for the last time.

These players have accomplished large wins against Marshall 7-1, Jordan 7-0, New Ulm 2-1, Fairmont 8-0 and Mankato East 7-0. The Saints have also been apart two extremely closes games one at Worthington and the other against Waseca, both games resulted in a 2-2 tie. Isaac Westphal, Ezekiel Kyoore and Joseph More are the leading goal scorers this season for the Saints. Besides the goal scorers and seniors there are plenty of other Saints who can step up and make a play. Wyatt Gillette, Eric Carlson, Rafat Solaiman, Daniel Nadeau and Ken Ringler are all underclassmen help for the Saints. Nadeau is an impressive addition to the list as he made the varsity roster this season as an eighth grader. Last season the Saints ended with a .697 winning percentage and an overall record of 8-5-1. They accumulated 23 goals, with Westphal being their leading scorer with 10 as a sophomore.

“The Saints are currently 5-1-2 on the season. They are sitting comfortably at third place in the Big South conference behind Worthington who has a perfect record and Waseca.” “Leading scorers for the Saints at this point in the season are Weiss with 3 goals, Wiebusch with two, K. Krueger with two, and M. Anderson, Dirks and G. Anderson all with one to their stats sheet.” Kaelin Weiss graduated at the end of the 2014-2015 year but he made big contributions with six goals. Joey Siebels was the goalie last season, like Weiss he graduated but made some huge saves for the Saints on the way to their eight wins. The squad last season had big wins against Marshall 6-0, Fairmont 6-1 and 4-0, Worth-

ington 1-0, Mankato Loyola 2-1, New Ulm 3-2, Marshall again 7-0 and Worthington again 2-1. St. Peter did so well last season that they ended up dominating Hutchinson and Willmar in their first two section 2A tournament games, however they fell in game three to Mankato West 0-1 and were knocked out.

The Saints are assisted on and off the field by coaches Brian Combs, Chris Moelter and Devin Idso. The team will face Albert Lea, Fairmont, New Ulm, Marshall, Worthington and Waseca before the regular season ends. If the Saints continue to get better they could go much farther than last year. The St. Peter girl’s soccer team has had a great season so far. With a 6-2-2 record the Saints can keep their hot streak going with six more games left in the year. The Saints currently sit at the top of the BSC leading Waseca, Mankato Loyola, New Ulm, Fairmont and Worthington. St. Peter started the season off on a losing streak against Chanhassen and Mankato West. However, early September was a turning point for the Saints as they have won or tied every game since then. Major wins this season for the girls have been against Fairmont 5-0, New Ulm 2-0, Worthington 6-0, Mankato Loyola 3-2, Waseca 3-2 and Minnehaha Academy 1-0.

The Saints have tied Mankato Loyola, Kasson Mantorville and Albert Lea as well this season. Desi Krueger, Ella Wiebusch, Melissa Chalupnik, McKenna Aune, Gretchen Neiderriter, Carmen Bistrup, Maggie Anderson, Annika Johnson, Lauren Juell, Emily Annexstad and Rachel Obermiller are the 11 seniors leading the squad this year. Other key players the Saints look to for playing making are Aly Deegan, Maggie Ringler, Kiki Krueger, Greta Anderson, Katie Dirks, Sophia Lee, Frannie LoFaro, Teagan Weiss, Suzanne Dietrich, Amelia Carlson, Sienna Wiebusch and Anna Amos. Leading scorers for the Saints at this point in the season are Weiss with 3 goals, Wiebusch with two, K. Krueger with two, and M. Anderson, Dirks and G. Anderson all with one to their stats sheet. Goal keeper D. Krueger has played 490 minutes of the season, only allowing five goals and 35 saves. Last season was also successful for the Saints as they recorded 10 wins, five loss-

es and one tie. Leading goal scorer last year was senior Marta Springer with 17 and then senior Ella Wiebusch with 12. D. Krueger again thrived in the net with 82 saves. The Saints finished the 2014-2015 season at the top of their conference. The girls were pretty hot and cold through mid September, ending with a 6-5 record. As October hit however, the Saints went on a five game winning streak to end the season and grab the conference top spot. St. Peter made it to the section 2A tournament winning their first two games against Worthington 11-1 and Hutchinson 2-1. However, Mankato Loyola proved to be too much for the Saints as they lost 0-1, ending their impressive season. Kari Larson coaches the team this year with the help of Alina Bachman, Jenny Koehler and Rachel Spiering. The Saints will face Minne-

West volleyball ready to roll in 2015

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer Mankato West Scarlet’s girls volleyball are looking to have no excuses, and no regrets in their 2015-16 season. They are coming off a 201415 season that saw them have a 12-17 record, something that they hope to improve on. “Last year we were really working hard on finding some strong line ups as the previous year we graduated almost all of our starters,” Coach Sarah Kirby said. Kirby is entering the season in her 5th year of coaching for the Scarlets. Kirby mentioned a goal of the teams being to reach an overall record of at least .500 this year. This is something they fell short of last season by 2.5 games. Kirby is also looking to continue developing the team chemistry, and making the team play for each other more. “They are all incredibly talented athletes and we are still continuing to work on playing as one.” says Kirby. To help lead this charge

Photo by SPX Photos Kirby will be looking for a pair of 11th graders in Krista Goerger and Maija Russell. Goerger is described as a strong hitter and setter. Russell is looking to improve even more from her 10th grade year, with Kirby sighting a big improvement in her this offseason. “She has worked hard and has turned into a very strong all around player for us in both the front and back row,” Kirby says on Russell. It will take Goerger, Russell, and the rest of the team to come together while finding that chemistry Kirby mentioned though. That, however, doesn’t seem to be a

worry. “I am excited to see them flip the switch from good to great. I want them to believe NOW is the time to come together and do great things on the court,” Kirby said when speaking on she’s most excited about. The Scarlet’s volleyball team doesn’t stop on the court though. The girls are also very involved in the West Area Volleyball Association (WAVA). The WAVA happens in the spring with 3-8th graders, in the fall they help 6th graders from Little Reds, and Summer has the team doing soccer camps with 4th-9th graders.

“It has been a very rewarding experience to see the athletes give back to the younger players and feel it has truly helped shape our program!” Kirby said. Kirby was also quick to acknowledge the staff around her noting, “I am also very lucky to have an amazing staff of coaches from 7-12th grade and value each one of them and what they bring to the program,” Their 2014-15 season saw them place 76th in the Minnesota Class AAA QRF Rankings with a score of 88.1. With hard work, continued development of young players, and the team strengthening as a unit it could be great season for the Scarlets

Loyola football looking to right the ship

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer The Mankato Loyola football team has not had a winning season since the 20092010 season. Since then, they have gone 8-37, including back-to-back 0-9 seasons. Last season, they ended the 0-9 seasons by going 3-6. This season, they are looking to right the ship and get back to possessing a winning attitude again. They have started the season 3-2, which is a terrific start to a turnaround season. As head coach Kevin Mettler stated, “We need to play together as a family.” Sports in general need to have chemistry in order for success to follow, and Mettler does not have a rocket science approach to his style of coaching. “Our goals are to play football as a team, stay

healthy, have fun and do all the small things.” Some players to watch this season for the Crusaders will be senior running back Taylor Gross, senior quarterback Noah Rajtar, senior

running back John Sadaka, senior wide receiver Andrew Sharpless, senior offensive lineman Sean Willaert, senior tight end Harry Orcutt, junior wide receiver Sheldon Price and senior defensive line-

man Matthew Naples. There is a lot of experience on this team, which can always help for the playoff run. Mankato Loyola started the season 3-0, and they have lost their past two

straight. Still a positive season so far and hopefully will remain that way for the rest of the ride. They blew out Hayfield High School to open the season, and then played a close game against United South Central High School where the final score was 18-16. Another blowout ensued against Medford High School, 41-14. The past two games were tough games to lose in different ways. The loss at Kenyon-Wanamingo High School was a defensive battle that resulted in a 15-8 loss. The following game at Blooming Prairie was not kind to the Crusaders, in which they were blown out of the water 48-8. They are looking to get back on track at home against St. Clair High School, and then they wrap up the season with a road trip to Bethlehem Academy high school and back at home against Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton high school. The biggest goal this season to obtain is that elusive winning record they have not had in quite some time. The season started out promising, and hopefully they simply hit a couple speed bumps in the road and will get back to their winning ways.

"Old to New, We Repair for You Since 2002"

The St. Peter boys and girls cross country season are just getting underway. The Saints ran in their first few meets at Fairmont, Saint James, Norwood-Young America, Mankato Loyola/Cleveland and Mound Westonka. Senior Cody Vacek leads the boys and the girls will have Hannah Baskfield and Mallory Blaschko to look up to. Other runners to watch for with the Saints are Andrew Artmann, Hunter Braun, Benjamin Eide, Thomas Eide, Trevor Gurrola, Shawn Lehtinen, Elias Lund, Earl Foster and Bailey More for the boys. The girls can find success with the help of Ingrid Harbo, Alison Helder, Alannah Irvin, Isabelle Lind, Emily Peterson and Katherin Schilling.

The Saints have small squads this year but that hasn’t stopped them from doing well at their meets. Vacek finished 22nd in the 5K at the Norwood-Young America invitational, while Lind finished in the number 24 spot in the girls 5K. Baskfield, Schilling, Harbo and Blaschko all finished the race as well scoring in the top 120 runners. The girl’s squad came in 16th place at the invitational. At the Loyola invite Vacek had great success, coming in fourth place with a time of 17:59 in the 5K. Gurrola, Foster, Lund, Braun and Artmann also all finished in the top 75. The boys came in fifth at Loyola. The girls did not place there. Recently at the Glencoe-Silver Lake meet, Vacek, More, Gurrola, Eide and Foster all ran the 5,000-meter race and placed in the top 30. Vacek was outstanding once again as he finished third with a time of 17:53. The boys lead

the Saints to a third place team finish. Lind captured a second place finish for the girls at the Glencoe-Silver Lake meet. Schilling also placed in the top 10, followed by Harbo, Peterson and Helder who all made it in the top 30. The girls also finished in third place for their hard efforts. During the 2015-2016 season the Saints saw success in meets at New Prague and Glencoe-Silver Lake and they placed sixth out of 21 schools at the section 2A tournament in October. The Saints still have races to run at New Prague and Fairmont before they look towards the post-season. New Ulm Cathedral looking to bounce back in 2015

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer When it comes to the New Ulm Cathedral Volleyball’s year in 2014 it could be pretty summed up by it could have been better, but it could have also been worst. In a year where the team couldn’t quite make it to an overall record of .500 they came awfully close to doing so. The first four games of the year showed a large amount of promise. The Greyhounds managed to secure a victory in three of the four games, scoring three points in each of the wins. With momentum firmly in hand, the Greyhounds entered the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Tournament hoping to come out ahead. The first game of the series went their way, as they defeated the Adrian Dragons 2-0 in a shutout victory. While it started off

on a bright note, the high wouldn’t last very long for the girls. The ensuing four games all came with a loss for the Greyhounds. Three of the four games the girls were unable to score at all, and would be on the receiving end of the shutout. It’s also interesting to note that each team they lost to scored a total of two points on them to reach victory. The team would continue to move forward though. In their next four games they split victories, taking two wins and two losses. Both of their losses during this time saw them lose by a score of 1-3, against Springfield and Minnesota Valley Lutheran. The girls got their next taste of tournament action in the Saint James Area Tournament - Pools. Unfortunately for the Greyhounds this one didn’t go any better than the first one though. The girls were defeated 2-0 by both the Windom Area Eagles and the St. James Area Saints. Before heading out though, the Greyhounds were able to secure one consolation victory over the Maple River Eagles with a score of 2-0 also. Tournament action would see them again shortly after, this time with the Saint James Area Tournament - Tournaments. The Greyhounds saw

“It would be a quick entrance and exit for the girls. In the first round they played against the Cedar Mountain/Comfrey Cougars. The game saw a nice amount of scoring, and was a tight game, but the Greyhounds fell just short losing the game 2-3.” their most success here. In the first game they won the game against the Worthington Trojans by a score of 2-1. The Greyhounds would once again meet and defeat the Eagles, this time the score being 1-0 and the win coming by forfeit. Once again in non-tournament action the Greyhounds came out in a split. Out of the six games played to end the year they only managed to win three of them while losing three. The last tournament of the

year for the Greyhounds was for the Class A - Section 2 Volleyball. It would be a quick entrance and exit for the girls. In the first round they played against the Cedar Mountain/ Comfrey Cougars. The game saw a nice amount of scoring, and was a tight game, but the Greyhounds fell just short losing the game 2-3. The Greyhounds ended up posting an overall record 1214. With some little improvements, and a toughness to find a way to victory in those close games, the Greyhounds

Mankato East is building to compete for the section championship tion on the team range from defense to special teams. The first to discuss is senior defensive lineman Logan Swanson. “One of the best linemen in Southern Minnesota,” Davis added. Swanson had already

3.5 sacks (first on team), and 7.5 tackles for a loss (first on team). He also has a fumble recovery to his credit as well. Another key to the defense this season is junior linebacker Dominick Nussmerier, as he was an All-Conference in the Big Nine last season as a

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer Coming off a year in which the Cougars of Mankato East High School were 5-5, they are looking for much more improvement this season. Head Coach Eric Davis calls it a “building process,” and as of September 24th, the Cougars are 3-2 to start the season. With three games remaining in the regular season, Mankato East could top last season’s record by winning all three against Austin High School, Winona High School and Red Wing High School. “Our biggest goal this season is to compete for the Section Championship,” head coach Eric Davis stated. It is very much possible for this squad to do just that, as they have won their past two games and look to continue their run of consistent success. Some key players to men-

sophomore. He has a healthy stat-line through his first four games of the season, as he is second on the Cougars with tackles with 24.5. He also had

Desmond Bassett, running back/linebacker Kaje Warren and leading tackler linebacker Luke Makovsky. Warren has looked great through

the first four games, gaining 439 yards on the ground off of 57 total carries. He has six touchdowns, along with averaging 7.7 yards per carry. Richard Kamara is the quarterback, and he has had a decent season for a run-first mentality type of offense. He has 223 passing yards, along with two touchdowns. He has yet to turn the ball over through the air this season. Bassett is the go-to receiver, as he has 19 catches for 200 yards, along with three touchdowns. They have done a terrific job in taking care of the ball on offense this season, and their defense has created scoring opportunities in achieving 11 takeaways in four games. The offense has only turned the ball over four times. Unfortunately, Mankato East High lost the annual rivalry matchup against Mankato West High School, 35-10. There are still key matchups ahead for the Cougars however, as they have their Homecoming game against Austin High School on September 25th, as well as a home game against Red Wing High School and a road game versus Winona High School.

ST. PETER continued from 12

“The Saints have small squads this year but that hasn’t stopped them from doing well at their meets. Vacek finished 22nd in the 5K at the Norwood-Young America invitational, while Lind finished in the number 24 spot in the girls 5K.” lar season. Both squads have eight regular season meets and will hopefully make it to the section 2A tournament at Tri City United in late October. St. Peter volleyball head coach Carmen Hanson has a tough squad this year. The Saints hold a 4-7 record with many of those losses being extremely close. The Saints are 3-1 in conference play and sit at second place just behind St. James. Major wins for the Saints include Fairmont 3-0, Waseca 3-2, Blue Earth 3-1, New Ulm 3-2 and St. Paul Harding 2-0. St. Peter has only been taken to five sets twice in the 2015-2016 season with many of their matches ending after three sets. Seniors Megan Roach, Zoey Bartlett and Autumn Maas have taken the Saints under their wings in their final year. Roach plays at right side, while Barlett plays at middle and Maas as a defen-

sive specialist. Other crucial play makers for St. Peter are Alexandra Eberhart, Alexe Dvorake, Mallorie Chabot, Nicole Ebeling, Kayla Oeltjenbruns, Brianna Sheehy, Jordan Schueneman, Shyanne Rodning, Claire Nuessmeier, Zoe Haugen, Emily King, Bailey Nesje and Ellie Johnson. Some tough losses for the Saints have come at the hands of Tri-City United 1-3, LeSueur-Henderson 0-3, United South Central 0-2, New Richland-Hartland-Ellendal 0-2, Cedar Mountain-Comfrey 0-2, Minnesota Valley Lutheran 0-2 and St. James 0-3. The Saints also played a recent non-conference game against Nova Classical Academy where they were defeated 2-1. In the 2014-2015 season the Saints absolutely dominated. St. Peter achieved an overall 13-2 record for the year. From September 9 to October 9 the Saints went on a nine match winning streak. The last two wins of

that streak came right before the section 2AA tournament against St. James and New Ulm. Ultimately, the Saints lost in their second match of the tournament to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 2-3 after winning the first tournament match against Waseca. They missed the state tournament. The Saints have not made it to the state tournament in any recent years. In their fifteen matches for last season, the Saints tallied 1,170 set points compared to their opponent’s 891 against them. Coach Hanson has plenty of help with her players, as Anna Hall, Haley Zweber and Mollie Meyer assist her on and off the court. The Saints will try to turn the season around against Water ville-Elysian-Morristown, Blue Earth, Waseca, Fairmont and St. James. Their

The Saints will need to do well against virtually all of these teams to get a good spot at the section 2AA tournament in October. The swimming and diving season is well underway for the St. Peter Saints. The girl’s have participated in eight meets so far this year. The Saints currently hold a 3-3-2 record. The only other Big South conference school that participates in girls swimming and diving is Marshall, they trail the Saints in the standings. Mary Lager coaches the girls. Several girls are in their senior season. Maggie Conlon, Mariel Ferragamo, Alyssa Lokensgard and Sara Ronnkvist lead the 21-member team. Underclassmen Signe Alger, Lillian Anderson, Kenna Burmeister, Bailey Fitzgerald, Mara Johnson, Molly Jurewicz, Jordan Keeley, Reegan

Kelly Sophia Lamor, Piedra Larson, Margaret Lehtinen, Abigail Mattson, Ashby Roloff, Sierra Schaefer, ReaAnne Smit, Jasmine Witty and Mackenna Zelenka all contribue for the 2015-2016 Saints squad. Some impressive meet wins come against Litchfield 58-40, Marshall 96-84 and Mankato East/Loyola 95-89. The Saints have lost against Mound Westonka/ Holy Family Catholic 87-97, Faribault 86-90, and Mankato West 77-96. There have also been two meets where the Saints have tied their opponent. The first was at Prior Lake and the second was a recent meet at Bloomington Kennedy. Adam Baker, Alissa Lager and Luke Weyandt assist Lager with the St. Peter swimmers at practice and at meets. The Saints’ 2014-2015 was less successful as they did not participate in the section tournament or the state tournament.

St. Peter did not mak the top ten coaches pole in class A for this season or last season, conference rival Mankato West did however, coming in at number five behind Visitation, Albert Lea, Sartell and Hutchinson. The Saints have five more meets left in the regular season, held at Mankato East/ Loyola September 26 and Waconia September 29. Then the Saints have a small break in the season as their next meet will be at Minneapolis South October 13, then New Prague October 20, Albert Lea October 27 and Marshall October 30 to finish out the season. If the Saints can pull through and win their last meets they could find success at the section 1A tournament and eventually at the state tournament held in late November at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

“The Saints will try to turn the season around against Waterville-ElysianMorristown, Blue Earth, Waseca, Fairmont and St. James. Their last regular season match will be at New Ulm. The Saints will need to do well against virtually all of these teams to get a good spot at the section 2AA tournament in October.”

Mankato West girl’s soccer wants a state tournament bid

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer The Mankato West Scarlet’s girl’s soccer team is coming of a very nice season where they came up just a game short of reaching the pinnacle. The girls posted an 8-5-3 record on the regular season. The Scarlet’s made the Class A - Section 2 girl’s soccer tournament in the season. The girls played against Faribault in the first round and shut them out 4-0. The second round saw the Scarlet’s defeat New Prague 3-1. They made the semi-finals but fell to eventual champions Albert Lea 2-1 just a game shy from the finals. Coach Crissy Makela is still seeing room for improvement though noting, “We have many new and younger players who are now starting on the Varsity roster. We need to learn to play together confidently and at a consistently high level.” Makela states three goals on this upcoming season. The first goal being to constantly improve in a game-to-game and practice-to-practice type of way. Makela wants to make the Scarlets the hardest working team on the field. The second goal lies in the power of positivity, as Makela is looking to keep a positive team chemistry going. The last goal is the most ambitious. “We will be Section Champions and advance to State,” Makela said. It may be an ambitious goal, but it is one that is entirely in reach after last year. The 2014-15 season the Scarlet’s posted the best win/loss record in the 20-year history of the program. “The athletes are just exceptionally positive and understand that they can learn from their mistakes/losses in order to become a great team,” Makela explained. Leading goal scorers McKenna Buisman and Ashley Gustavson will be looking to take the lead in helping them reach their goals. Makela also noted that Lauren Colway and Dana Bohks have

The Scarlets hold a 8-5-3 record. converted positions from midfielders to backs to help with team needs. Goalkeeper Emma Matter will be protecting the net for the Scarlets. “Her career shutouts to date are 14. 21 is the school record for a career,” Makela said when speaking on Matter. The chemistry is there, and the team seems to be having fun both on and off the field. “It is also a lot of fun to listen to them hang out with each other and sing on the bus rides home from games,

even after a loss,” Makela describes. The team is off to the races this year, and is having an amazing season thus far. Their goals are in sight, and their determination is paying off.

Greyhounds looking to repeat as section champions

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer The New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds are off and running after a nearly flawless season in 2014. The boys are coming off of a season that saw them go totally undefeated in the regular season. Their regular season they were nothing short of commanding throughout the entirety of it. In their eight games played, the Greyhounds defeated their opponents by an average of 36 points per game! If that wasn’t impressive enough, the team’s defense managed to shutout three different offenses over the course of the season. Their biggest margin of victory came during a shutout. In that game the offense scored a whopping 61 points, while their opponents the Red Rock Central Falcons were unable to score even a single point in return.

Even in their smallest margin of victory on the season, which was just 14, came at the expense of the Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s Knights. The defense was a huge part of what made the Greyhounds so successful, only allowing an average of 8 points scored per game. Domination on defense would be an understatement to say the least. The Greyhounds stellar play throughout the season would earn them a spot in the Class A - Section 2 football tournament. In the first round the Greyhounds squared off against the Sleepy Eye Indians. For the second time in the year the Greyhounds made quick work of the Indians, defeating them 41-16 to move on to the second round of the tournament. Here they would face off against the Minnesota Valley Lutheran Chargers. Much like the Indians, the Chargers wouldn’t end up faring any better against the Greyhounds than they did in the regular season. The Greyhounds routed the Chargers, and won the game 32-8 to advance to the championship round. The finals saw a rematch for the Greyhounds against their toughest opponent of the season in the Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s Knights. While the regular season game was

a shout out, it wouldn’t come as easy this time around. This time the Knights put up 14 points of their own, but still lost the game by 6 points as the Greyhounds won the game 20-14 making them the Class A Champions and advance to state. Despite having an amazing season, and going undefeated up until the state tournament, the Greyhounds would not have as easy of a time. Round 1 of the tournament matched them up against the Minneota Vikings high school team. The Greyhounds not only tasted their first defeat, but it also came in a shutout. The Greyhounds lost the game to the eventual winners 27-0, and had to pack their bags to head home early. Despite a disappointing finish to their year, the accomplishments the Greyhounds made throughout can not be taken away. They will be looking to continue to show that they are among the best, and work their way back to the state tournament in this upcoming season.

Fairmont fall sports underway in 2015

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The Fairmont Cardinal fall sports teams have their seasons underway. Main squads for the school this year are football, volleyball and cross country. The Cardinal football team has had a good start to the 2015-2016 season going 3-2 in their first five games. Their victories have come against Jordan, St. Peter and BEA. Their two losses were at the hands of Tri-City-United and Marshall. Coach Mat Mahoney says the team has a great theme for the year. “Row the Boat,” Mahoney said. “Basically it means that we are going to face some adversity this year and we need to keep the boat in the right direction and not let adversity stand in our way.” The team, who has three more conference games, has several goals for themselves as well. “ We want to be very competitive in the District,” Mahoney said. “And compete for the section champion-

ship.” Although they’ve already played Blue Earth and St. Peter Mahoney said those two games were exciting for the boys to play. There are several key players for the Cardinals this season, Linebackers Chris Fausch, Cory Lyons and Brady Jensen. Linemen Nathan Gillis, Luis Figueroa and Dustin Meyer also look to do great things. Last but not least Mahoney says to watch for wide receiver Christian Engemen. Overall Mahoney wants the fans and community to know that he is working with a “very passionate and hardworking” group of men that don’t and won’t back down. The Cardinal volleyball players are also looking to have a stand out season for Fairmont. Coach Haley Loerts has high hopes for her team. “Pass expectations, set standards and tear down the competition,” Loerts said. “That is what is on our posters this season.” Those goals can be achieved but Loerts hopes to keep “improving and rebuilding” the program as that is her ultimate goal. In her second year of head coaching for the Cardinals Loerts knows her team is “headed in the right direction.” There are many players that Loerts knows will positively impact the team this year. Varsity seniors are Ha-

ley Harder, Alyssa Wescott, Courtney Mosloski, Teiryn Arens, Tahnisha Jimenez, Sarah Tschumperlin and Katelynn Noah. Loerts said there were three huge impact players that were out for last season with injuries and having them

girls. “We tried out a lot of new things, some worked, some didn’t,” Loerts said. “This year we are hoping we find more things that do work. I am excited to see what these girls can do this season.” Loerts knows the girls have

The Cardinals have many boys and girls who are capable of leading the team this season. The girls are senior Sarah Bartz, junior Jenna Pavich, Emily Haugen, Molly Hawkins and sophomore Lizza Subbert. Senior Josh Sundblad, junior Ben Huink-

‘“Pass expectations, set standards and tear down the competition,” Loerts said. “That is what is on our posters this season.”’ back is “huge.” Sophomore Courtney Williams, Katelynn Noah and Courtney Mosloski all made full recoveries and are ready to play. The Cardinals have a few underclassmen that are ready to step up as well. Erika Kim, Courtney Williams and freshman Bailee Swanson are all players to watch. Junior setter Maddie Hennager was added to the varsity lineup this year as Loerts has decided to run a 6-2 rotation. Loerts said last year was a learning year for her and the

the talent to pull everything together and succeed. Another Cardinal squad looking to do big things is the cross country team lead by head coach Bob Bonk. The theme for Bonk’s squad this year is, “to prepare to win is more important than the will to win.” The girls did well last season and went as far as state, placing third, and Bonk hopes they can return there this year. The boys hope for a better winning percentage this year at 67 percent.

er, sophomore Nathan Willett and freshman Andrew Moeller round out the boy’s side. Bonk hopes to do well at every meet but is especially looking forward to the Milaca Mega Meet, the biggest home invitational called the I-90 Invite and the section meet.

Mankato West tennis returns all singles players from 2014

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer The girls of Mankato West’s tennis team are ready to get back in action! The 2015-16 tennis season is underway, and they are looking to bounce in a positive direction. The girls are coming off a good season, but are looking to take their returning girls to advance even farther than before. “Not too often does any team get to return all 4 singles players like we’ve had the ability to this year. Although we were very young last year in singles, this year the girls have gained tremen-

Photo By: SPX Sports dous mental toughness and growing their individual skills weekly,” said coach Adam Doll. The team is looking strong in all positions. Doll even noted that one could consider all

10 spots on the team a key position. “What is unique about our sport is the fact each night we have a match a different spot wins. In tennis you have 7 teams points and must win

at least 4 to get the team W. This season we’ve won at every position and having success in different spots each night so this seasons it’s safe to say we have 10 key players,” explained Doll.

The team’s goals rarely change. Each year they look to put their first 1st serves while avoiding double faults. They also are always looking to be aggressive at the net, and using the best footwork possible to get the point started. When discussing the most exciting part of this season Doll had to say the potential of placing 3rd in their conference through improving in the conference tournament. “We have not finished 3rd in the conference tournament for about 10 years. This is now even more impressive with the addition of Red Wing and Northfield to our conference,” Coach Doll said. The Scarlet’s tennis team is ready, and equipped with all the pieces they need to achieve this. Now all they have to do is execute.

Maple River is ready to make impact in 2015

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The Maple River football program has been having a very successful 2015-2016 season. The Eagles hold a 5-1 record with their only loss coming at the hands of Waterville-Elysian-Morristown. Brian Schoneck is the head coach for Maple River this year and is assisted by Dusty Drager, Jeremy Olson and Steve Arndt. Nick Steinhaus, Brandon Sohre, Noah Greenfield, Andrew Albrecht, Andrew Beck, Gabe Raske, Paul Schoneck, Alec Blair, Zach Garlow and Lukas Trio are all in their senior season for the Eagles. In the South Central conference standings Maple River only trails behind Waterville-Elysian-Morristown as they are tied for second with New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva. Junior quarterback Jeff Lewis stands in fifth place in passing yards for the conference with 429 while Noah Greenfield comes in fourth for receiving yards at 202. The Eagles most recent win was huge against Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial with a score of 28-7. Sophomore Lincoln Arndt leads the Eagles with 243 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Greenfield also has three touchdowns for Maple River, two of them receiving. Senior kicker Brandon Sohre has had an impressive season so far with 513 yards recorded. Cougars return full lineup in 2015

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer Head Coach Krista Conlon is entering her third season coaching at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton High School, but this year will be her first coaching at the varsity level. She had coached junior varsity and junior high previously before. “I am looking forward to my first season as varsity coach,” Conlon said. “We have a great group of girls; not only on our varsity team, but in our entire program.” This season, look for these girls to never go down easy. “The girls are going to put up a fight each and every night on the court. Their goal is to finish in the top half of the conference,” Coach Con-

lon expressed. Last year has filled the team with much more expectations this season “Last year’s season has brought a new energy to JWP Volleyball. With the right attitude, effort, and energy the team can consistently be successful,” Conlon stated. When going into detail about asset players to this year’s team, Conlon mentioned two for sure that will be major impacts this season. The first is senior setter Hannah Olson. “Hannah is probably one of the best setters that JWP has had in the last 8-10 years. She is extremely versatile. She is quick, strong and has a great awareness of the court. She is a quiet leader; one that leads by example. Great work ethic, lots of hustle, great attitude and is always working to improve her game. You can tell she has been working extra hard this summer with her workouts. She is ready to finish her JWP Volleyball career strong.” In Olson’s 2014 season, she recorded 412 set assists, 26 aces and 60 kills. She is

ranked tenth in school history in aces with 70, and fifth overall in set assists with 660. The next player to mention is senior libero Kaley Anderson. Last season, she made her mark in the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton re-

opponents.” Conlon continued, “She picks up so much and allows our team to runs its offense. She is most definitely coming out of her shell this year and will be a great leader for our team. Kaley has a passion for this sport and it shows on the court.” Coach Conlon goes into discussing how without those two players and positions, it would be difficult to generate much success when it comes to any match. Kaley and Hannah are also the only returning starters from last season. The big focus this season for the team will be offense. “With seven hitters graduating, the girls need to find a way to create some offense in order to score,” Conlon added. “Defense is the girls’ strength. Knights look to get back to Section Title game

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer To call the 2014-15 season successful for the Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s Knights successful would be quite the understatement. The team had an amazing year, boasting an incredible record, while marching their way to the final round of the Section Championships. Throughout the regular season the Knights managed to chalk up a very impressive 7-1 record on the year. The only team that was able to post up a defeat to the mighty Knights was the New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds where they were routed in a 14-0 loss. Other than that blemish the Knights remained a force

to be reckon with the whole season, making their way to the Class A- Section 2 tournament. The first two rounds proved to be no trouble for the young squad. In the first round against the Cedar Mountain/Comfrey Cougars the Knights made sure to make quick work of the team, defeating them 54-6. Moving onto the second round the Cougars continued their winning ways beating the Springfield Tigers 28-19 to move on to the championship round. The championship pit them against a familiar team in the Greyhounds. Looking to make up their loss in the regular season, the teams did battle to declare a winner. The Knights would come closer this time, but still fell to the Greyhounds 14-20. The team will be looking to finish what they started last year, but it will have to be done with some fresh faces. “We are a little smaller than last year and we will be young. We only have six seniors so we have to get some games under our belt so we can be confident during games,” said head coach Brent Kucera.

‘“We are a little smaller than last year and we will be young. We only have six seniors so we have to get some games under our belt so we can be confident during games,’said head coach Brent Kucera.” The team will be looking to fare stronger with the help of QB Nick Strate, Wide Receiver/Defensive Back Kodan Kosac, Wide Receiver/Defensive Back Alex Sellner, and Offensive/Defensive Lineman Sean Salfer OL/DL. Coach Kucera has high hopes for the team, and is

looking to watch the team develop into a solid unit, and play as a good football team. “We have the natural physical talent but we need to get our minds and our mentality in the right place before we can beat any good teams,” Kucera said. It won’t be easy, as the

team is showing a large amount of fresh faces on the field this year. The team is going into the season attempting to find an identity. “(We) Need to figure out who we are. We are replacing 90% of our starters from last year. We will need to be a balanced run/pass team,” explains Coach Kucera. Kucera notes that they will be aiming to figure out their leaders this year, while also developing a balanced attack against teams this year. Kucera has shown that he can help the team reach their goals last year, so don’t bet against him to do it again this year.

St. Clair Volleyball looks to improve in 2015

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer The girls of the St. Clair Cyclones volleyball team are ready for action, and looking to improve on a solid year in 2014-15! The girls ended the year with a winning record, but will still be looking to continue their development to win the big one when they get to it! The Cyclone girls started off with a victory, but then when on quite the slide losing their next two games. In the first tournament pool of the year the Cyclones would get swept, losing all three of their games making them unable to advance to the championship round. The games played were incredibly close, including coming out a 1-1 tie against both the St. Peter Saints and the Worthington Trojans. Their most success in tournament play last year came

when they hosted the St. Clair Tournament. The girls managed to win all three of their pool games. Each victory came at a 2-0 defeat of the opposing team. Advancing to the bracket part of the tournament the Cyclones faced off against the Mankato Loyola Crusaders. The Cyclones advance to round two after routing the Crusaders with another score of 2-0. The home court advantage didn’t end up lasting long as they faced the St. Peter Saints. The Saints defeated the Cyclones, sending them packing with a score of 2-1. The Class A - Section 2 tournament was hopefully going to go a little better for the girls, but similar results ensued. The girls advanced to round 2 after defeating the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Bulldogs 3-2. The Martin County West Mavericks were next up on the list, but it would be the proverbial hit wall for the Cyclones. The Cyclones would taste defeat once again, this time when the Bulldogs won 3-1. This year will have a lot of senior fire power for the Cyclones, with the majority of their roster being 12th graders. The seniors taking the court this year are Cheyenne Prahl, Lizzy O’Donnell,

Joining these girls will be 11th graders Joci Hanson, Katey Embacher, Autumn Haug, Hailey Embacher, Mariah Steinbach, Megan Fandrich, and Jamie Goettl. There will only be two 10th graders sharing the court with the girls, and they are Kate Karels and Olivia Drummer. The girls posted an overall record of 15-13. They placed 57th in the QRF ratings, receiving a score of 71.5. Look for them to make big steps in improvement. With a large group of experienced 12th graders, a good set of 11th graders to help out, and the fresh faces of the two 10th graders it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to fans when the Cyclones make strides to become even better.

J-W-P rolling to start 2015

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer Head Coach Krista Conlon is entering her third season coaching at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton High School, but this year will be her first coaching at the varsity level. She had coached junior varsity and junior high previously before. “I am looking forward to my first season as varsity coach,” Conlon said. “We have a great group of girls; not only on our varsity team, but in our entire program.” This season, look for these girls to never go down easy. “The girls are going to put up a fight each and every night on the court. Their goal is to finish in the top half of the conference,” Coach Conlon expressed. Last year has filled the team with much more expectations this season “Last year’s season has brought a new energy to JWP Volleyball. With the right attitude, effort, and energy the team can consistently be suc-

cessful,” Conlon stated. She is ranked tenth in school history in aces with 70, and fifth overall in set assists with 660. The next player to mention is senior libero Kaley Anderson. Last season, she made her mark in the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton record books by setting the single season record for digs with 407. She also recorded 21 aces, and ranks seventh in JWP history in digs with 570. “Kaley is a crucial player to our team. She is quick and does a great job reading the opponents.” Conlon continued, “She picks up so much

and allows our team to runs its offense. There are some top notch passers on this team.” It should be an entertaining season for the Bulldogs, as the atmosphere is based on a winning attitude. Despite losing many starters last season, the team will hopefully have the two seniors lead and guide them appropriately.

St. Clair football ready to roll won 25-12. The Cyclones then defeated Mankato Loyola 2014. The defense has stepped up this season allowing 18.8 points per game. The offense is still struggling, but after two straight games of scoring more than 20 points is an encouraging sign for the Cyclones. Head coach Dustin Bosshart leads St. Clair into battle every Friday night with 13 seniors on his squad including Quarterbacks Sam Schruin and Brandon Freitag. It will be a huge uphill battle to try and improve. With a year under their belts, and the sting of defeat still fresh feeling, the Cougars will be looking to avoid the same fate. After a season like 2014 up is the only way this team can go, but how long it will take to make that move will be up to the young Cougars.

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer There aren’t many ways to look at a season where one is unable to win to find a bright spot. I guess the only way it could really be done is to say it can’t get much worse than this can it? The 2015 season was absolutely punishing for the young men of the St. Clair Cyclones football team. A season in which they went an abysmal 0-8 during the entire year. Perhaps even more alarming than that, the Cyclones were defeated by an average of an enormous 24 points per contest. The woes of the team could be long listed. The team must figure out away to come up with some sort of semblance of a defense in the upcoming season if they have any desire to improve. Losing by an average of four scores exposes a lot of problems. Not only will the defense have to step up and make some stops, but the offense will have to show that

The Cougars received a chance to perhaps redeem themselves a tiny bit last year when entering the Class A - Section 3 tournament. Just because they had the chance though, doesn’t mean they were able to take advantage of it. In round one of the tournament the Cou-

gars took on the Adrian Dragons. It was nothing short of a one sided beat down on the Cougars who lost the game, and were sent packing with a score of 48-7. The overall record on the year was 0-9. The squad posted almost dead last in the Minnesota Class A QRF football rankings. They placed at number 60 with

a score of 12.0. Only three teams placed lower than the Cougars. The Cougars will be looking to turn their season into a success. The Cyclones started the season with four straight losses, but have bounced back with two straight wins. One was against Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in which the Cyclones

Maple River Volleyball to rebound in 2015

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The Eagles volleyball team holds a 0-7 record so far for the 2015-2016 season. The girls have played against Mankato West, St. Clair, Lake-Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, New Richland - Har tland - Elle ndal, Nicolett, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown and again against New Richland-Hartland-Ellendal. The Eagles came close to beating Nicolett in mid-September 2-3 but could not pull off the win. Maple River is coached by Mike Walters and assisted by Kimberly Carey and Laura Olson. Although they have a losing record, the Eagles have eight more matches to turn the season around. Madison Jones and Sarah Fay are the only two seniors on the squad this year. Both Eagles have been on the varsity squad since their sophomore years. Jones plays at the middle block position while Fay hits at right side. The Eagles have eight juniors going into next season.

The 2016-2017 seniors will be Rachel Larson outside hitter, Grace Juergens outside hitter, Anna Doering outside hitter, Georgia Pederson setter, Emma Stevens right side hitter, Katelyn Bramer out-

side hitter, Alaina Corgard defensive specialist and Emily Carleton outside hitter. It appears coach Walters will have some decisions to make as there are a large amount of outsides for the Maple River

went 0-13. They were the only team in the Valley conference to not win a match, just below Cleveland who won just one during the year. Eight teams topped them in the conference, Lake-Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, Marin County West, Nicolett, St. Clair, Alden-Conger, Mankato Loyola, Martin Luther and Truman. The Eagles two set wins in the 2014-2015 season came against Minnesota Valley Lutheran who eventually took the match and the other was against Nicollett. Both opposing teams did beat the Eagles 3-1. Maple River will play Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, Blooming Prairie, Medford, Minnesota Valley Lutheran, Bethlehem Academy, Alden-Conger, United South Central and Martin Luther/ Granada Huntley in their last eight matches of the season. If the Eagles can turn these eight matches around they may have a chance in the section 2AA tournament held at Gustavus College in late October and early November. However, they have never made it to the state tournament.

squad next year. This season the Eagles have scored 392 set points compared to their opponents 554 points. Last season was a tough one for the Eagles as they

New Ulm Volleyball ready to improve as the season progresses in 2015

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The New Ulm Eagles’ volleyball season is well underway. With four matches under their belt they’ve played three at home and one away. The Eagle’s are currently 0-4 but coach Melissa Larson says, “things are looking up.” The team’s overall theme for the year is an important part of their road to success. “Make new friends,” Lar-

son said. “And become the team we know we can be, that is our goal. Another goal for the Eagles’ team is support. Larson hopes the girls support one another no matter what happens. Larson stresses that the team is more “relaxed” this year as they have one more year of coaching experience than last. “We can feel the difference in the way we teach, learn and gel as a team,” Larson said. “We must continue to keep our eyes fresh and new as they were last year to give every player the opportunity to shine in their position.” The Eagles graduated some strong players last year but Larson assures that there

are great new seniors and juniors who have stepped up and are ready to dominate. “The opportunities are endless with this team, “Larson said. “If they come together and use their strengths and support each others weaknesses they can go as far as they set their minds.” The New Ulm team has changed their lineup several times this year but Larson feels confident that whichever six she puts on the court will give “100% and be incredible.” There are five seniors for the Eagles’ this year, Hunter Ahlness, Kelsey Anderson, Emma Berg, Emily Bertrang and Brook Schugel. Ahlness is a defensive specialist with a lot of experience to contribute. Anderson is the team’s

St. Peter Tennis looking to make a deep playoff run in 2015

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The St. Peter girl’s tennis team is very ready to dominate this season. With a unified and dedicated team, coach Aaron Rothenberger should expect great things from his players. “We hope to improve our performance from last season,” Rothenberger said. “With a deeper playoff run and also winning the BSC East division.” During the 2014 season the Saints finished with a 14-6 record, losing in Section 2A semis to United South Central high school. The Saints overall were ranked second in the BSC East. Heading into the 2015 season, Rothenberger says there is a realignment of sections. “The team to beat will be the defending state champs,” Rothenberger said, “Holy Family.” The team for the

Saints to beat in the BSC conference will be Saint James, they were ranked third last season. Key players for the season are Rachel Huber, Katie Sandquist, Kelli Hanson and Aliza Doherty. Huber is a BSC all-conference and Sandquist will be a 5th year starter. Rothenberger and assistant coach Kali Cummins say to key an eye out for Ali Sandquist, Claire Thompson and Alex Gault. “We look forward to improving our tennis skills and mental approach to the game,” Rothenberger said.

“And last but not least, enjoying the game itself.” The two captains for the Saint’s squad this year are Aliza Doherty and Katie Sandquist.

‘“The team to beat will be the defending state champs,” Rothenberger said, “Holy Family.” The team for the Saints to beat in the BSC conference will be Saint James, they were ranked third last season.”

setter who Larson says has “matured” into a leader the team needs. Berg fills the role of right side hitter while Bertrang and Schugel round out the seniors at outside hitter. The eight juniors on the squad have been together since 6th grade. Allison Becker, Emma Bute, Kayla Brandes, MaKenzie Depew, Dani Hogue, Megan Hulke, Makenna Kluis and Madison Suess are all ready to step up in their new varsity roles according to Larson. Depew and Hogue have become strong middle hitters for the Eagles and Larson hopes to see big things from them this season. The team needs to stay positive and support each other throughout the season if they want to stand out in

the Big South Conference, where Larson says there is “great competition.” New Ulm is part of the East half of the Conference and Larson says two of their biggest competitors this year will be St. James and St. Peter. “The West half’s biggest competitor will be Jackson County Central and Marshall,” Larson said. “Marshall has moved out of our section we will still have one home game against them.” New Ulm is in section 3AA and the projection for the Eagles’ volleyball squad is middle to top half of the pack in conference play.

Mankato East using fundamentals to compete in the Big 9 grader. We’re very excited about having her get some wins for us at the top spot this year all while gaining experience for future years with the program,” Fredrickson remarked. There is also senior captain Megan Kunz. “Megan has been a rock for us as a great captain and leader on and off the court. Megan has also came up with some big wins for us at #3 singles in key 4-3 matches including a win over Rochester John Marshall in which both teams were tied 3-3 with her match being the last one on the court and being the match to determine the team result.” Fredrickson also went on to talk about senior Hannah Lacina: “Hannah comes from our co-

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer The Mankato East High School girls’ tennis team is always hungry for improvement, as their head coach Ryan Fredrickson has generally stated. “If I were to choose a theme based on my focus as a coach, the theme would be “fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals.” Fredrickson explained “Tennis is a sport where true upsets are rarer than in other sports, and just like almost any sport, if upsets do happen, it’s typically a combination of strong fundamental play by the less talented player and mental mistakes or fundamental errors by the more talented player.” Fredrickson refers to his players has the “Cardiac Kids,” saying they have continued to play it close all year. “Four out of 13 matches have had a team result of 4-3 (or 3-4) and us winning three out of those four matches (75%).” Compared to last season, the Cougars also had four matches that were decided by that same score but instead lost three out of the

op with Loyola and has also been coming through with some great wins at #4 singles. We’re very pleased to have her back with the team for her senior year.” Out of the key matches this season, there is still one to pay close attention to. The match will be against Mankato West on September 29th. “Not only because they are our cross town rival, but also because we lost a tough one to them last year (3-4). They will be one of the top opponents in our sub-section, and they could potentially be our seventh conference win,” Fredrickson said. “Although we will be an underdog in this match, it should be a close one that we will have a shot at.”

OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK Photo by SPX Photos four. These girls play a lot of matches that are down to the wire, which is usually highly unlikely to occur. Going into this season, the Cougars had a goal that remains the same every year: improvement in conference play. “Last year we were 4-7 in the Big 9 conference and this year we are already 6-2 in the Big 9 conference after a 6-0 start.” Another goal they want to accomplish is finishing in the top five in the Big 9 conference to end the season.

Mankato East has not had more than six wins in the conference, dating back to 2008. Coach Fredrickson said himself it would be a special feat to reach seven. An important item to note is the fact the girls won three out of those six matches with a score of 4-3. Moving on to the players to watch this season, the first to mention is freshman Hannah Weng. “First year playing #1 singles for us after playing varsity all of last year as an 8th
