Mankato West looks for success across the board LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer With lots of upper classman maturing into leaders, the Mankato West Boy’s Track team is ready to compete in the Big Nine. Head Coach Matthew Kolb is back to lead the Scarlets for another successful season. “We want to be Top three at Conference and Sections. Sending 6-8 athletes to the Hamline elite to help prepare them for State,” Kolb said. The Scarlets bring back several letter winners this season. Senior Dan Kieker is back to anchor a solid throwing squad. Kieker was All-State in discus last season throwing the disc 156-04. Senior Evan Rector, a state competitor in Shot Put, is back to help the throwers as well. Rector threw 49-02.75 at the State Meet last season. Senior Logan Bristol was a State High Jump and 110 High Hurdles competitor a year ago and is back to lead a good core of runners and jumpers. Junior Chris Olson in hurdles, Senior Jon Pytlak in sprints and triple jump, Senior Connor Watts in sprints, Junior Josiah Dahlgren will be doing all the jumping events, Junior Jake Jancoski and Senior Ben Broze will be the
distance runners for Mankato West this season. Senior Opie Opsal and Sophomore Mason Balster look to lead the middle distance runners. Bristol broke the indoor high jump record, jumping 6’-7’’. The original record was 6’-5’’ set in 1983. A couple of newcomers who could make some noise this season from Mankato West are Senior Travon Jones in sprints, Sophomore Brock Annexstad in the jumps and Freshman Jack Brown in pole vault and high jump. Mankato West is family affair for the Kolbs, Kolbs sons are both apat of the team. Chris Kolb is the hurdles coach, while his other son Senior Ty Kolb competes in the pole vault and hurdles. Kolb’s wife, Amy Kolb, runs the pole vault during home meets as well. The Scarlets are looking to compete in the Big Nine conference and the section this season, with the hope of sending several runners to state. The Scarlet Tennis team is looking to capture the no. 1 seed in the sub-section for the second year in a row. Last season, the Scarlets finished just short of .500 and lost six matches by a score of 4-3. Head Coach Adam Doll leads

the Scarlets. “We hope to find ways to turn those into wins. We were fortunate to pull out some big matches in the sub section last year earning a no. 1 seed which

we hope to repeat,” Doll said. Junior Kieran Townsend, Senior John Kurtz and Freshman Ethan Swenson will be key singles players for the Scarlets this season. Townsend will be the no
1 singles player for another season, putting him against some of the best players in the area.

Cathedral once again towards the top
DENZELL OATS Staff Writer New Ulm Cathedral High School’s baseball’s team 2014 season record was 19-6 and 14-2 conference champion. In their present conference this season they currently sit 133, with two losses to very strong teams who traveled far in the section playoffs last year. They have a tough schedule coming up with big games versus Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s, Springfield and Mankato Loyola who are also among the conference’s top competitors. New Ulm has six returning starters and their two top pitchers from last year who are expected to play a big role in the latter part of the season. Head coach Bob Weier is aiming to strongly develop the depth within the pitching staff in the team alongside filling open positions left by graduation.
The team is led by two AllConference and All-Section pitchers in senior Collin Helget and junior Gabe Knowles. Knowles currently ranks second on the team with three runs batted in, just one shy of team leader Jack Schwartz, who has four. Helget has been a go to guy on the mound, going 1-1 as a pitcher against a 4.67 earned runs against average In incoming rookie E. J. Berdan, the team hopes to develop to contribute. They also are looking to freshman Nate Hauser who plays outfield and pitcher to have an impact on the team. New Ulm will play next Thursday April 30th in a double header matchup against Sleepy Eye High School.

Rebuilding season for the Saints could lead to future success
LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer After a successful 2014 campaign, the St. Peter Boy’s golf team will need last junior varsity kids from year to step up in 2015. “We will be very inexperienced this year. We will need last years JV kids to fill some key spots on our squad,” Head Coach Neil Doose said. Senior Killian Bixby is back to lead the Saints in 2015, he is in his third year as a varsity golfer. Senior Ben Emley lettered last year on varsity and eighth grader Carter Doose is looking to build off of his seventh grade season where he lettered. Joey Wenner is a sophomore is in his first year of golf, and will be competing for a varsity
spot. “He has some potential to really help our team,” Doose said. Andrew Olson, Dylan Salisbury, Eric Carlson, Reid Reicks, and Luke Pehrson will all be up for Varsity spots in 2015. The Saints will be rebuilding to start the year, but will be competitive when the season ends. They have a lot of young players that will hopefully grow as the season progresses. “We are in between rebuilding and competing. At the beginning of the year, it will be rebuilding and hopefully at the end of the year we will be competing,” Doose said. St. Peter is looking to finish in the top half of the South Central Conference and hopefully Section 2AA. “We would like to finish in the top half of the conference and qualify as a team for the

want to be playing our best golf at the end of the year.” The Saints have meets in Fairmont on May 2nd, than
travel to New Um on May 4th. St. Peter has the South Central Conference meet on May 18th.

Swenson is already having a solid season, winning his first four matches of the 2015 season. Kurtz is the leader of Mankato West and is looking to build off of a solid 2014 campaign. “Ethan and John each are hoping to improve this year from an average previous year. Ethan already this year is 4-0 two weeks into the season so the season is looing much more promising,” Doll said. “John is our sole team captain this year making it his second year serving as the leader of the Scarlet tennis team on and off the court.” Senior Rolando Flores, Freshman Ford Johnson and Senior Brady Schmidt will rotate between number four singles and the top doubles pair. Junior Jared Schwictenberg is a incoming player that could some damage for the Scarlets. “Schwictenberg is one of our most versatile new players to the team. He has the ability to play number four singles and anywhere in the doubles lineup,” Doll said. Junior Carter Hemstock, Sophomore Patrick Collins and Sophomore Will Mueller also have look to have some varsity time for Mankato West.

The team is returning four players who held permanent spot on last years squad, but this team isn’t rebuilding, they want to compete now.
“The six new players have spent large amounts of time during the USTA tennis in Mankato program and are ready to display their talents at the next level,” Doll said.
The Scarlets currently have a 3-5 record with the Big Nine Conference meet set for May 9th while they take on New Ulm on April 24th.

Viking track and field making their presence felt in the UMAC DEREK LAMBERT Sports Editor The Bethany Lutheran College men’s and women’s track teams are led under the direction of David Ring. Both teams have seen an increase in numbers from previous years with 16 men and 12 women. Both teams

have had some success this season, and hope to continue that success into the coming meets. As a team, the Vikings placed third earlier this season at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in Duluth, setting them up for a successful outdoor season. Individually, the Vikings have
set some impressive personal bests. In the 200-meter, junior Luke Hahn set a personal best and team-leading time of 24.07 seconds, while Zach Dantzman set a team-best 53.50 in the 400-meter. Most impressive is sophomore Lucas Malimanek’s 1500-meter time of 4:22.82, which if you’re unfamiliar with track and field distances, is onesixteenth of a mile short of a full mile, being ran in under four and a half minutes. That’s pretty incredible. On the women’s side of things, sophomore Megan Sauer recorded an impressive 1500-meter time of her own, finishing with a time of 5:07.28, and ranks third on the team with an 800-meter time of 2:38.80. Freshman Kayla Norris leads the way in the short sprints, as she finished her 100-meter dash with a time of 14.17 seconds to lead the team. Left on the schedule for the Vikings are the MSU Twilight meet at Minnesota State tomorrow night, followed by the UMAC Outdoor Championships this weekend at the University of Minnesota-Morris.

The Mankato West Girls Golf team is looking to build off a successful 2014 season. The Scarlets plan on being competitive in meet this season and can end up 5th or higher in the Big Nine conference. “Mankato West will be competitive in every conference meet we play. We truly believe we will end up 5th or higher in the Big Nine Conference,” Head Coach Aaron Miller said. The Scarlets want to advance to the second day of the section meet, after failing to do so in 2014. “We really want to have one or two players move on to the second day of the section meet. That means that there is a chance to send an individual to the state golf meet,” Miller said. Senior Mari Buseth is a returning number one golfer from a year ago, the squad also is returning letter winners Senior Maddie Mueller and Junior Jisoo Kim. The Scarlets have a young core group that is up and coming including Lauren Smith and Allison Lewandowski. “We have five sophomores who bold well for the future. Two of those sophomores who will have an impact this year are Smith and Lewandowski,” Miller said.
Mankato West will be building their games throughout the year. “Everyone is always building upon their successes to compete each day, each month, each season. Golf is a game that mirrors life. There are times when struggles need to be overcome and it is that process that makes all golfers, all people better,” Miller said. The Scarlets placed 7th in Big Nine play overall, and finished 5th in the conference meet. Nobody advanced on after the first day of the section tournament, which is a goal for the team in the 2015 season. The Mankato West Softball tea is coming off a successful 2014 season that saw the Scarlets for 19-3, but they were unable to get a win in the Class AAA Section 2 tournament. The Scarlets are a young team this year with good potential, coming of Big Nine Conference Championship. “We need to develop and grow as the season progresses,” Head Coach Donald Krusemark said. Some of the key-returning players are Junior Pitcher Lexi Schoper, Sophomore Catcher Hannah Hasting, Sophomore Outfielder Tristan Danay and Freshman Pitcher Emily Vero-

even. Some incoming players that can make an impact for the Scarlets in the 2015 season are 8th grade infielder Kenzie Grunst, Junior Catcher Maddie Ottmar, Sophomore Catcher Maja Russell and Junior Pitcher Kelsey Kopp. The Scarlets may be young but their goals are set high. After a successful 2014 campaign, Mankato West looks to win the Big Nine Conference and Section 2 AAA.

Crusaders showing what they're made of on the mound DENZELL OATS Staff Writer The Mankato Loyola Catholic baseball team has made a great effort in there beginnings if the season. Coached by head coach John Landkamer, the team currently sits at 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the Valley conference. With wins over Le-Seur Henderson, Lake Crystal, Watervill, and their most recent win over Cleveland High School, the team looks to keep the ball rolling as they head towards the middle of their season. In the Valley conference the team currently sits third among Truman High School who sits in first with a record of 4-1 and Janesvillle-Waldorf in second with an undefeated league record of 1-0. The team is deeper than usual expressed Coach Landkamer. With over 20 athletes this year this surpasses their roster last year of 17. The team is made up of all juniors and seniors with only one sophomore in Luke Sellner who had an impressive freshman season last year at second base. Outfielders Austin Ellingsworth and Jake Peller, in their senior season, are looked at to lead the team through the highly competitive Valley Conference. Losing only two to graduation last year the team hopes that
experience and the volume of it among the team play in their favor come time for section playoffs. Martin West County who has yet to play this season will be the next opponent for Manakto Loyola. They will face-off against them this Thursday April 30th at home. Mankato Loyola’s softball team under head coach Kari Koester currently has a record of 4-1 only losing to Jordan high School. With wins over Janesville-Waldorf, Martin Luther High School, and Alden-Conger, Mankato Loyola currently have an undefeated league record in the Valley Conference. They sit tied for second place in the conference sharing the spot with Cleveland High School and Lake Crystal Memorial. Martin County West High School sits on top of the conference with an undefeated league record of 4-0. With 22 athletes on the team, Coach Koester will miss having a strong senior presence on the team. Graduating six last year, the team only has two now and an even spread of freshman, sophomores, and juniors to fill the rest of the spots. The two seniors will lead the team in their 2015 spring campaign. Senior outfielder Emily Gasper and pitcher Megan Schroeder will

act as captains and hope to fill the big missing gap of veteran performers from last year. The team will see the 1-2 Madelia Truman Jayhawks next in competition Thursday April 30th at home.

The New Ulm Cathedral High softball team is under the head coaching of Bob Mertz and assistant coaches Jamie Portner, Kaitlyn DuChene, Karan Whitmyer and Ron Domeier. The team currently stands undefeated in their 2015 spring season campaign with a record of 7-0. Last season the team finished the season with an overall record of 22-5 where they won three state tournament games to come away as champions. They sit now on top in the Tomahawk conference with Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s in second place with a record of 5-1 and Sleepy Eye High in third with a 4-2 record. With a very sound defensive field staff, the team’s strengths stand in their pitchers and their veteran outfielders. With only
one senior on the team, the team will look to Anne Schwarz in the outfield to navigate the team through the Tomahawk conference. On the other hand the team is made up of seven juniors and five sophomores. Coach Mertz hopes this plays in favor for the team. The New Ulm Cathedral girls will faceoff in a double-header match up Thursday against Sleepy Eye High on their road to return to the state tournament. Following a handful of conference matchups against Sleepy Eye, Springfield, Wabasso, Minnesota Valley Lutheran, and Mankato Loyola, Cathedral will turn their attention to the Section 2A Tournament, where they were champions last season. 2A play begins May 13th and concludes on May 28th, with a shot at playing at Caswell Park in North Mankato for the State Championship.

With numbers low, St. Peter relies on returners to produce LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer The St. Peter Girl’s golf team is looking to build off of a successful 2014 season, returning their top four starters from last year. “We return our top four varsity players from last year. Our depth will be an issue again this year as we have a hard time gaining numbers in the program,” said Head Coach Pat Klubben. With depth being an issue for the Saints, they will be leaning heavily on their returning players. Staying healthy will also be key for the Saints. “Once again it will be very important for us to stay healthy as we will not have a lot of experienced depth,” Klubben said. After finishing in 2nd place at Sub-sections a year ago to qualify for Sections, St. Peter will be looking to get over the hump to get to State. Last season, no individuals qualified for State, but the team did finish 5th
in the section. “This year our goal would be to improve to a 1st place finish in Sub-section and play well enough at Sections to qualify as a team for State,” Klubben said. “I believe that if our team can’t make it to state, that we certainly have a couple of players that have the ability to make it individually.” Juniors Zoey Bartlett and Maggie Conlon along with Sophomore Anna Amos and Freshman Miranda Bresnahan are back to lead St. Peter in 2015. Each player had success in 2014 and is looking to build off that in 2015, especially Amos. “After another summer of working on her game, Anna Amos is looking better than ever. She has the potential to consistently shoot in the 80’s this season,” Klubben said. Incoming players freshman Kennady Legg, and eighth grader Amelia Wernsing look to round out the top six players on
Varsity this season. “Kennady as already made an impact by scoring in our first meet of the year,” Klubben said. For the second year in a row the Saints will be without a senior, even with a young team the expectations are still high. “We are till young with no seniors for a second year in a row, but we do have our top four players back from last year with higher expectations,” Klubben said. St. Peter makes the trip to Fairmont for a meet on May 2nd and then to New Ulm on May 4th. The South Central Conference meet is at the Interlaken Golf Club in Fairmont on May 18th. The Saints have a meet against Sibley East-Norwood Young American at the Shoreland Country Club on May 21st then wrap up their regular season against Mankato East at the North Links Golf Course in North Mankato on May 22nd. Junior Maggie Conlon lines up a putt.

Vikings look to extend season as long as they can DEREK LAMBERT Sports Editor After a tough go of it in the 2014 season, the Bethany Lutheran College baseball squad has bounced back this season. A year ago, the Vikings compiled a 14-22 record while going 12-9 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference before their season was ended in a 4-3 loss to Northwestern in the UMAC postseason tournament. This season, BLC has experienced an up and down season, but improved on last year’s struggles. With a record of 1414, the Vikings sit at an even .500 on the year. They seemed poised for a great season in early April when they went on a six game winning streak, but when the streak ended, it was followed by a seven game losing slide to balance out the impressive run

they went on. Looking forward, the Vikings look to close out the season on a positive note, extending their season for as long as possible. “The goals just like every year are to get to the UMAC tournament,” said head coach Ryan Kragh. “And hopefully win it to get an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.” It’s a tough road ahead for BLC, but with some veteran leadership, the potential is there for a late season push for the NCAA tournament. Currently, the Vikings sit in third place in the UMAC standings behind first place St. Scholastica and Northwestern. Going 1-3 against Northwestern this season, BLC won’t get another shot at the Eagles until a possible matchup in the UMAC tournament, but have the opportunity to see where they stand when they go toe to toe with Scholastica to close out the regular season. “Big games would be CSS next weekend,” said Kragh.
“That is our biggest rivalry.” The Scholastica Saints hail from Duluth, Minn. and are one of the best teams in Division III baseball. In UMAC play this season, the Saints have gone an incredible 15-1, and will be a good test for the Vikings, but BLC has the experience from their veterans to carry them through to the postseason. “I would say our leaders are Lucas Herd, Adam Geiger, Tyler Hebrink, and Joe Tuholsky,” said Kragh. “They have been in our program a long time and have been very good players for us.” Herd, a senior outfielder and pitcher who played his high school ball not far at Sibley East, has batted .275 this season for the Vikings with five doubles and two triples while batting in fourteen runs on the year. He’s also walked 11 times on the season, making him a reliable player to get on base and put his team into scoring position. On defense, Herd has a fielding percentage of .879 and a 3-1 record on the mound while posting a team leading 2.7 earned runs against average in 23.1 innings pitched. Hebrink, the senior infielder from Willmar, Minn., has been outstanding at the plate, ranking second on the team in both runs batted in and doubles, with 20 and five, respectively. An impressive batting average, Hebrink has tallied hits at a rate of .362 on the year with a .409 on base percentage. On the other side of the ball, the senior ranks third on the team with a .959 fielding percentage, starting in all 28 games. Senior outfielder Adam Gei-

eight doubles on the year, and has been equally as consistent in the field, with a .943 fielding percentage. Another senior, Tuholsky, who played his high school ball at Little Falls, ranks second on the team with 100 at bats, batting at a .330 clip. He’s batted in 11 runs on the year along with a team-leading three triples. Tuholsky has also done some work on the mound, pitching a 3-1 record against a 4.63 earned runs against average in 23.1 innings pitched. These senior veterans aren’t the only ones carrying the load, however, as there are a pair of newcomers making waves for Bethany. “New faces would be Ronnie Donley from MSU-Mankato and Cody Leitner from Red Wing,” said Kragh. “Both left handed

“We want to win the Big Nine and the section. And to get better each day and to have fun,” Krusemark said. The Scarlets are competing in a tough conference now. They currently sit with an 9-1 record with wins over Mankato East, Apple Valley and Edina. The Scarlets have yet to lose a game in the Big Nine. Their only loss is to Brunsville, whom have yet to lose. The Scarlets are impressive offensively and defensively. They score 8 runs a game while only giving up 3.2 runs a game. Bre Black is leading the team on the mound and with the bat
in the 2014 season. Black is hitting .565 with 20 RBI. She holds a 10-2 record on the mound with 72 strikeouts and a 1.34 ERA. Callie Looft is hitting .460 with 23 RBI, Veroeven is hitting .470 and Schoper is hitting .452 with 17 RBI. West is a very young team, but they are not letting that show and should contend for the Big Nine Conference. Their 5-0 conference record puts them at the top right now. Rochester Mayo and Winona are two teams that will being giving the Scarlets a run for their money in the Big Nine and Section 2. “We are ready to compete
now, even though we are a young team we fell we have the people to compete now,” Krusmark said. The Scarlets host three important opponents over the week of May 4th. Mankato West has four games over four days including a double header against Owatonna Thursday May 7th. Tuesday May 5th the Scarlets have a battle with Northfield. Friday May 8th Mankato West is pitted against 3rd ranked Prior Lake.

The Vikings close out their regular season this weekend with a three-game series against St. Scholastica in Duluth before the UMAC Postseason Tournament the following weekend. A good showing in Duluth would be a good indication of where BLC stand heading into the conference tournament, and allow them to size up the competition as they make their push for the NCAA Tournament.

LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer After a struggling 9-27 season, the Bethany Softball team is looking to add a couple more slashing in the win column in 2015. “We are looking to pick up a few more conference wins to help ourselves in the standings,” said Head Coach Renee Tatge. The Vikings are looking to return to the conference playoffs, while they have improved their record to 12-20 this season with a 6-11 conference record placing them sixth in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. A couple of key returns for the Vikings this season are second base starter and lead off hitter junior Aimie Wiechmann, starting left fielder junior Angela Timm and third base starter sophomore Allison Norton. Wiechmann is hitting .286 on the year with six doubles, after hitting .280 in 2014. Timm has struggled early this season hitting .083, the Vikings will be looking for her to get back to her .212 average from a year ago. Timm is excellent in the field with a .964 fielding percentage, which is best on the team. Norton is hitting a solid .230 this season with seven RBI. Last season Norton hit .284 with 15 RBI. The Vikings have had a couple of incoming player help make an impact on the 2015 team. Freshman starting pitcher

Allison Norton Norton comes to BLC all the way from Alaska. After hitting .284 last season with 15 RBI's, Norton is swinging a .230 average with 7 RBI's this season.

already this season. She has a 7-9 record with a 3.27 ERA with 190 strikeouts. She has also been successful with the bat, leading the team with a .385 average, 13 doubles , one home run and 24 RBI. Freshman Cindy Pawlitcheck is splitting time in the outfield and behind the plate this season, but that isn’t affecting her bat. She is second on the team with a .333 batting average with five doubles, a team high three home runs and 20 RBI. With a young core of players the Vikings have been in a building mode this season. They lost their top hitter from a year ago, Rebecca Ludewig who hit .408 with seven home runs and 31 RBI. That production will have to be picked up by some of the younger players. “We lost five seniors all of whom were starters so this year was a building year with a number of new faces,” Tatge said. After sweeping a double header in Minneapolis over North Central College, the Vikings have their UMAC Postseson tournament scheduled for May 1st and 2nd in Duluth.

Veteran leadership crucial for young Sleepy Eye team With a very young roster this spring, the Sleepy Eye Indians girls track and field team looks to their experienced veterans to provide leadership. DEREK LAMBERT Sports Editor Just past the midway point of the high school track and field season, and the home stretch is on for sectional and state tournament meets. For the Sleepy Eye girls track and field team, it’s been a season of learning for a very youthful team, looking to build on the successful tradition that's brought this team conference championships in 2012 and 2013. “We have a lot of new faces this year in all the different areas,” said Indians head coach Brian Bauleke. “It’s a little early to tell who is going to stand out but there is a lot of potential from most of them.” The Indians carry a seventh grader in Majesta Schaunaman, four eighth graders, seven freshmen, and eight sophomores to go along with three juniors and four seniors. The veteran leadership has been crucial for the Indians, and could be a sign of great things to come for this young squad. “Becca Schmitz stands out as
one of our best leaders both in her skill level and pure leadership ability,” said Bauleke of one of his four seniors. “She is the first one to get everyone going and it makes coaching much easier. Along with Schmitz the rest of our seniors have done a great job so far of stepping up and leading the younger classes.” Schmitz is in her fifth year of running track for the varsity squad, beginning competition as an eighth grader. A season ago, she was a part of the 4 by 100 meter relay at last year’s Minnesota State High School League track and field championships at Hamline University in St. Paul. She was also a part of the 4 by 200 meter relay team that competed at the state meet at Hamline. The relay teams placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Her work ethic and the results that stem from it are a template for younger athletes to follow as they go through their season and careers with Sleepy Eye. Last season, Schmitz recorded an impressive 32 feet
in the triple-jump to go along with a high jump of 4’6”, only outdone by her 2013 high jump of 4’8”. Schmitz surely looks to continue her success in her final season for the Indians, hoping to make it to the state meet in June. For now, the focus at hand is continuing to progress. “I think the biggest goal that we have as a team is to just get better everyday,” said Bauleke. “Hopefully by the end of the season we can put ourselves in a position to make a run at winning the conference and sending some athletes to sections and possibly state.” On tap for the Indians is a busy month of May as they prepare for the Section 2A Tournament. A handful of meets stand in the way of Sleepy Eye and their final regular season meet on May 18th at St. James before the sub-sectionals begin on May 21st. The sub-sectionals will be held at high schools around the area, with the Section 2A meet being held at Mankato West High school, which is the big one. “There is not a lot of ri-
valry that comes with track on a team level but there are a lot of individuals that would like to bet certain schools or athletes,” Bauleke said. “The big meet that we have this year is our conference meet.” Until then, Sleepy Eye will continue putting in the work to improve each day, and if they work hard enough, some athletes may just go on to higher levels of competition. “There are currently no college commitments for athletics as of right now,” Bauleke said of
his team. “But there are a few that are thinking of pursuing that route.” Schmitz may be one of those athletes, and for now she looks to lead her team and return back to St. Paul for this year's state meet, taking place June 5th and 6th at Hamline.

Indians take a leap in 2015 After a tough 2014 season, Sleepy Eye has rebounded in 2015, making their way towards the top of the Tomahawk Conference.
DEREK LAMBERT Sports Editor It was a trying year in 2014 for the Sleepy Eye Indians out on the baseball diamond, but they’ve seemed to put that behind them in 2015 and are focusing on piecing together a solid season in 2015. A year ago, the Indians compiled a 4-12 record, finishing eighth in the nine team Tomahawk Conference. Their defense struggled at times, and they often couldn’t find the needed offense to get themselves over the hump. But once the season ended, the Indians put that behind them and turned the page, and now are off to a good start to the 2015 season. After opening the season up with an 11-6 loss to St. James Area, Sleepy Eye has since gone 5-2 to compile an overall record of 5-3 on the season. A pair of wins over Minnesota Valley Lutheran along with additional conference wins over Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart and Wabasso has the Indians in second place of the Tomahawk Conference, narrowly behind New Ulm Cathedral. Not a bad improvement from eighth place a year ago. Matt Berkner is the lone senior for Sleepy Eye and a definite leader for the Indians. With the graduation of senior and leading slugger Sam Hirschboeck from last season’s squad, Berkner was the man to
fill those shoes. Last season, Berkner batted an incredible .500 at the plate with two doubles, a home run, and five runs batted in. Not to mention he also had two stolen bases on the year as well. Though the only senior on this squad, Berkner isn’t the only returner who is looked at to lead this team. Juniors Alex Bruggeman and Dylan Klein return this season after very successful sophomore years in the lineup. Bruggeman batted .353 last season with a double and a team-leading eight runs batted in and a stolen base while Klein batted .235 with three runs batted in. The Indians are off to a much improved start, but their defense may need to tighten up before the push for the sectional and state tournaments begin. Sleepy Eye has allowed their opponents an average of 6.8 runs per game on the year while averaging 6.37 runs per game themselves. While they do have a winning record at this point of the season and are in good position in the conference, they don’t want to find themselves in an offensive track meet with their opponents down the stretch. On tap yet for the Indians are a handful of conference games versus Springfield, GibbonFairfax-Winthrop, Comfrey, crosstown rival Sleepy Eye-St. Mary’s, and first place New Ulm Cathedral. Additionally, Sleepy Eye has a pair of non-confer-

ence games yet to play versus Mankato Loyola and St. Clair to finish off the regular season. Currently, the Indians are neck and neck with St. Mary’s and Minnesota Valley Lutheran in the Tomahawk Conference, just ahead of G-F-W and just behind Cathedral. Head coach Aaron Nesvold is readying his team for the road to the state tournament with the chance to play at Target Field in Minneapolis. Section 2A play begins May 16th, with the state tournament taking place June 11th and 12th. If the Indians keep pushing and improving as they have so far, they just might find themselves in the Twin Cities next month battling it out for some hardware.

MANKATO WEST “We are ready to compete now, even though we are a young team we fell we have the people to compete now,” Krusmark said. continued from 13
The Mankato West Baseball team is coming off of a 2014 campaign that saw them go 13-11. The Scarlets, led by Head Coach Ethan Anderson, got the eight seed in the Section 2 Class AAA tournament. They won their first round game over Mankato East before falling to New Prague 3-2. The Scarlets had a great start to their 2014 season that saw them start 9-3. The Scarlets couldn’t finish strong as they lost their final five games going into the section playoffs. Mankato West has 10 seniors on the team including Steven Nessier, Jayme Munsterman, Alex Goettl, Conor Wollenzien, Ryan Schilchte, Macalaster Severns, Kevin Marzolf, Ben Kleist, Garret Banwart and Ryan Theissen. In 2014 the Scarlets averaged 5.8 runs a game while giving up 4.3 runs a game. While in 2015 they are scoring 8.8 runs per game while giving up 5.8 runs a game. With a senior led team, the Scarlets have had a hot start to the season. They are sitting with a 6-2 record with wins over Mankato East, Rochester Mayo and Faribault. Their losses are to Northfield, who is 8-1 and Rochester John Marshall. Theissen and Wollenzien are the top returning hitters for West. Thissen hit .361 a year ago while Wollenzien hit .344. Wollenzien also tied for the team lead in RBI with 19 while hitting four doubles and one home run. Musnsterman is also looking to build off a solid junior campaign that saw him hit .310 with 19 RBI. Goettl hit .289 a year ago, with 11 RBI and five doubles.
Theissen was also successful on the mound, going 10-3 throwing 36 2/3 innings with 36 strikeouts and a 3.26 ERA. Schilcte went 3-2 with a 1.54 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 36 1/3 innings. Expect the Scarlets to be at the top of the Big Nine Conference and Section 2, but there is along road ahead of them. The Big Nine is very competitive this season, with Northfield, Owatonna and Rochester John Marshall as some of the top teams in the league. The Scarlets have conference battles with Albert Lea, Winona and Austin at home before the year ends. The Scarlets take the trip to Northfield on Tuesday May 5th then have a double header against Owatonna, in Owatonna to battle the huskies on Thursday May 7th. The Mankato West Girl’s Track team is back at it after a successful 2014 season. The Scarlets have five seniors to lead them into the 2015 season, Christa Benson, Emma Henry, Lorna Wright, Maddi Courrier and Taylor Amundson. West is a young team that is rounded out with eight freshman, six eighth graders and three seventh graders. Amundson was a successful sprinter for the Scarlets in 2014 and is back to lead a solid core of sprinters. Amundson ran a team best 26.03 in the 200m Dash in 2014. Junior Krista Johns adds to the core of West High’s sprinters, she was second on the team a year ago running a 13.56 in the 100m Dash while she ran 28.43 in the 200m Dash. Amundson also led the team with a 1:03.10 in the 400m Dash. Benson runs the Hurdles for the Scarlets, she took down the
100m hurdles in a team best 16.55 seconds. Benson also had a team best 49.47 in the 300m Hurdles. Amundson also runs the 100m hurdles, running a time of 17.22 in 2014, while Henry took down the hurdles in 17.55. Henry ran a 53.07 in the 300m hurdles. Junior Katie Esslinger is back to run the mid-distance and distance for the Scarlets, she ran the open 800m run in 2:37.78. She also ran the mile in 5:46.53. Sophomore Claire Attarian had a successful freshman campaign and is back to run the distance races for West. She ran the 1600m run in 5:39.97 and the 3200m run in a team best 11:53.39. Wright is back to lead the throwers, she led the team in discus a year ago, throwing 11011.00 and the shot put 32-11.50. Junior Maggie Cusey adds to the core of throwers for the Scarlets, she threw the discus 88-01.00 and the shot 29-05.00. Sophomore Claire Rehome led the team in shot put in 2014, has she threw the shot put 33-06.00. Eighth grader Jenna Courrier has done some damage in the jumps. She was second on the team in the triple jump, leaping 30-04.50 in 2014, she also jumped 12-08.25 in the long jump. Johns is the returning team leader in the long jump, jumping 14-11.75 a year ago. The Scarlets take part in the True Team Section meet on May 5th before heading to the Big Nine Conference Meet on May 22nd. The Section 2AA Meet is scheduled for May 27th and 29th as the Scarlets will get their chance to make it to the State Meet.

Sleepy Eye softball off to a great start to the 2015 season DEREK LAMBERT Sports Editor The Sleepy Eye Indians came out of the gate hot to start the spring 2015 softball season, picking up where they left off a year ago. Last season, Sleepy Eye carved out a 12-5 season with an 11-5 conference record, which was good for third place in the Tomahawk Conference. The Indians were outmatched by only New Ulm Cathedral and Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s. This season, the Indians started out an undefeated 6-0 before dropping a pair of games to conference foe Wabasso last week. The defense has been good for Sleepy Eye, but what’s more impressive is their offensive output at the plate. In their first six games, all wins, Sleepy Eye scored 53 runs while only allowing 14 against over that span. The Indians were winning games in dominating fashion, opening the season with a 13-4 victory over Sibley East, followed by a 10-0 shutout victory over Cleveland, a 12-1 win over Springfield, wins of 12-4 and 15-3 over Minnesota Valley Lutheran, and a narrow 3-2 victory over Mountain Lake Area. Since their impressive winning streak to begin the year, the Indians have since gone 1-2 after the two losses to Wabasso, rebounding with another dominating victory with a 13-3 win
over G-F-W. It’s been mostly smooth sailing for Sleepy Eye so far this season, but they have a couple of tough games this week against conference rival and defending state champion New Ulm Cathedral, who has gone a perfect 5-0 in league play this season. With a 4-2 record in league play, head coach Tim Hoffman has the Indians in third place of the Tomahawk Conference, just behind first place Cathedral and crosstown rival Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s, and ahead of Wabasso and Springfield. The Indians are in interesting team in regards to their lineup. Sleepy Eye has four seniors this season leading the way along with three juniors, balanced out by their two sophomores and four freshmen who have cracked the lineup this season. Senior McKayla Ahlrich and junior Kalyn Haas carry the load on the mound for the Indians, leading them to their 7-2 record thus far. Ten Tomahawk Conference games and one non-conference match up with Redwood Valley separate Sleepy Eye from the Section 2A Tournament, where they hope to dethrone Cathedral on their way to the State Tournament on June 4th at Caswell Park in North Mankato. The teams ahead of the Indians don't have an easy road the rest of the way, though.
Web Photo
Cathedral still has two games against the Indians before a match up with second place St. Mary's and two games versus a very tough team in Wabasso. St. Mary's also has two games against Sleepy Eye remaining, before a double-header with G-F-W. However the remainder of the season goes, fans of the Tomahawk Conference alike can agree that it will be an exciting finish for the conference crown.

Saints off to a quick start
After earning the no. 1 seed in the sub-section last season, St. Peterlooks to repeat that success on the baseball diamond in 2015. LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer The St. Peter Saints are looking to build off of 2014’s 8-11 record. The Saints earned the number one seed in the Section 2 South Sub-section a year ago. The Saints, led by head coach Kurt Moelter, were able to start the year quickly, winning two of their first three contests. They went 5-5 in Big South Conference play to go along with their 5-6 record in Section 2 play. The Saints didn’t end their year well, dropping four of their last five going into section play, including their last three to New Ulm, Fairmont, and NorwoodYoung America. The Saints were able to turn things around come playoff time, wining their opening round game 9-1 before falling 7-5 Faribualt Academies then they were knocked out of the tournament by Tri-City United 5-3. Their three seniors; outfielder Shaun Timmerman, outfielder Sam Wenner and catcher Brett Zallek lead St. Peter. With only three seniors on the roster, the youngsters will have to pick up the remaining slack. The Saints have four
juniors, including pitchers Mitch Johnson, Nate Wenner and Cullen Bruce, four sophomores, two freshmen and an eighth grader on their roster this season to help fill the remaining holes. The Saints were decent from the offensive send, scoring 5.9 runs a game, second best in the sub-section, but their defense was solid too, as they gave up 4.8 runs a game, which was second on the sub-section. So far in 2015 the Saints hold a 1-6 record and are in the mist of a five game losing streak. With an inexperienced team, the Saints will have to learn quickly if they want to get the number one seed back from last season. They lost their rematch with Tricity United in a close ballgame, 3-2. The Saints have remaining games Blue Earth Area on May 5th along with a battle against Sibley East on May 8th. St. Peter has back-to-back games on May 11th and 12th against St. James Area in Arlington and in Waseca. St. Peter will wrap up their season with a bout against Watertown-Mayer in Watertown on May 19th.

Loyola's senior veterans lead the way Seniors Brandon Richter and Lexi Owens return for their senior seasons after finding success in 2014.
DENZELL OATS Staff Writer For Mankato Loyola’s track and field teams they are under the coaching of Dale Compton. In their young season they have competed in only four meets thus far. The men’s team numbers currently sit at 38 while the women’s roster sits at 44. The men are looking to see strong performances this year from senior Brandon Richter. Last year Richter was the runner up in the 3200 meter run in the Valley Conference. His efforts also earned him a spot in the MSHL Class A honor roll list in the event with a time of 10.27.2. In sections last year, Richter barley missed the cut,
not making qualifying time to state. For the women, Lexi Owens will return for her senior season competing in the 300 IM hurdles. Her best time last year of 50.09 earned her a conference title as a junior. She hopes to further build off that and reclaim her title again this year. Head coach Compton hopes these performers and others alike will step up to lead the team throughout the season. Both men’s and Women’s teams will compete next Wednesday April 29th at the 2015 Blooming Prairie Relays.

Waseca softball on the rise
DEREK LAMBERT Sports Editor On the softball field, Waseca picked up where they left off last season. A year ago, the Bluejays went 9-7 on the season while going 5-5 in the Big South Conference, which was good for a third place tie with the Fairmont Cardinals. Head coach Melissa Cox has her girls playing confidently, even going on a four game winning streak earlier this season before dropping a pair of games to the New Ulm Eagles and the St. Peter Saints. The Bluejays have a good mix of talent on their team, ranging from seniors to sophomores, creating a balance that should bode well for them in years to come. Senior pitcher Stephanie Butterfield and senior infielders Kirstin Simmons and Katie Tlusty lead the way for Waseca, filling the gaps left behind after Mackenzie Madsen, Jordan Paulson, and Alexis Shifflett graduated last spring.
Page 25
Eleven juniors see time for Waseca, with Maddy Knoll and Madi Priebe cracking the lineup for the second straight season. Four sophomores round out this lineup, with Emily Rux returning after making the jump to the varsity level last season as a freshman. Ten games remain on deck for the Bluejays, with six of those games being conference matchups. Waseca closes out the regular season with a nonconference game against Maple River, which they will then turn their attention to postseason play. The Section 2AA Tournament begins on May 13th, where the road to the State Tournament starts, and ends with the AA State Tournament at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

St. Peter Softball looks to bounce back in 2015 LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer The St. Peter softball team is looking to build off of their 2014 campaign that saw them go 9-10, losing in the first round of subsection play to Tri-City United 3-2. The Saints are led by head coach Heidi Niemeyer, and have had a solid start to the 2014 season with a 4-3 record. St. Peter has six seniors on its roster this season including, Pitcher MiKayla Ogren, infielders Calli Sizer and Lauren Chabot, outfielders Valerie Bresnahan and Roberta Leal and catcher Lexi Wilkins. The Saints also have nine juniors and an eighth grader, Mackenzie Brey, to help fill out their roster. In 2014, the Saints struggled to score runs when comparing them to other teams in their subsection. They averaged 5.5 runs a game, which was fourth in the sub-section. If they are able to pick up their offense a little bit and keep their stout defense from last season, 4.1 runs against per game, the Saints could be in really good shape in 2015. The scoring has gotten better for the Saints, as they average
6.3 runs per games in 2015, but they are giving up 5.3 runs per game. The Saints struggled early in 2014; they dropped four of their first five games, with their lone with against Blue Earth Area. They were able to pick things up in the middle of the season, winning three in a row with a sweep of Waseca 5-0 and 11-4. With a strong end to the season, the Saints were able to get the no. 3 seed in the Section 2 South Subsection bracket, going against the no. 6 seed Tri-City United, but lost 3-2. The Saints were able to get redemption from Tri-City United this season when they beat them 15-2 earlier this season. They have remaining games against Marshall, which is a double header on May 1st. They have battle St. James area on May 14th before wrapping up regular season play on May 15th.

Mankato East Cougars continue looking to make improvements TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer The Mankato East High School baseball team is looking for a better 2015 season, as last year they finished under .500 with an 8-12 record. This season, they have started off on the right foot, winning their first five of eight games. In the Big 9 conference, they are 3-3 and currently sitting in sixth place. Ranked 57th overall in the state, the Cougars will be relying on six seniors to take this squad to bigger and better things in 2015. Third baseman, shortstop, and pitcher Ryan Carsten, First baseman, outfielder, pitcher Austin Reeves, captain Cooper Wolfe, First baseman, pitcher Nick Brink, catcher, pitcher, outfielder Joe Billiar, pitcher, third baseman, outfielder Nick Ditschler and pitcher, first baseman Matt Metzler will be the experienced core to watch as the season goes forward. There is a lot of depth on this year’s squad, as most position players are also pitchers. Brink and junior fellow co-captain Dylan Findlay will have to step up to lead by example for the Cougars. Last season, Brink led the team with 16 runs batted in, and also led the team in doubles and homeruns. Findlay led the team in stolen bases and had a 1.24 earned run average last season. The team ended up finishing sixth in the Big 9 conference last season, as all teams in front of them had .500 records
or better. The biggest problem last season was defense, as the team would allow big innings off miscues. That looks to be the focus this season, as the pitching is there and hitting should come along well. In 2015, the team is hitting a combined .294, and has scored 46 runs in just eight games. That is an average of just under six runs a game, which should be enough for the pitching to hold up. Head Coach Cory Smith is hoping for a better year out of his Cougars, and a top spot in the conference. The Mankato East boy’s golf team is led by only one senior this season, Christian Sadaka. Recently, the Cougars finished just two strokes behind Century High School at the Eastwood Golf Course, par 72. Eighth grader Carson Haley finished with a 76, Sadaka finished with a 78, junior Judd Schulz finished with a 79 and junior Carter Haley finished with an 82. Carson Haley had the lowest score in the entire match. Head Coach Nathan Fuller has a lot of youth in this club, but that will help as the season goes on to adapt to the game. The girl’s team is head coached by Aaron Anderson. They are 1-5 so far in the season, but they most recently have recorded their first win last Monday against Rochester Century. The team is very inexperienced, as there are ten freshmen, three juniors and one senior. The one senior is Samantha Vondrak. The team is hoping for growth

this season, as the experience is not there to make a run. The Cougars softball team has started on the same pace as the baseball team, as they are 5-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference. The team oddly has the same amount of seniors as the baseball team has, with six. They are led by outfielder Libby Andrego, outfielder Ashlee Henderson, infielder Paige Lingbeck, infielder Katelyn Scharmer, pitcher Nicole Rasmussen and outfielder Adriana Lastimosa. The club broke off a fourgame winning streak to start the season 4-1, and are looking to keep a hot pace going. Last season, the Cougars finished with

Sibley East looks to improve in 2015 TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer
Sibley East High School has an enrollment of 319 students, and they are in the Minnesota River Conference. The Wolverines baseball team is currently 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. They currently were shutout by Jordan High School 6-0. They stand as the fourth best team out of eight teams in the Minnesota River Conference. There are eight seniors featured on this year’s ball club, as they will help pace the Wolverines success for the season. Infielder Andrew Bullert, outfielder Austin Brockhoff, infielder Austin Hahn, infielder Hunter Voight, outfielder Jason Meyer, infielder Justin Korson, infielder Lucas Bullert and outfielder Zac Weber are the seniors to keep an eye on this season. The team is looking on creating a better season than last year, as they finished with an 8-8 record in 2014. They did lose four seniors coming into this season, but a team that still has eight seniors will be a key asset for the experience of the team. Their Coach is
Dan Tackman, who is 57-43-1 overall in his career. The team is hoping that their experience can carry the team this season, as they have the seniors to create some vast success. The Wolverines softball team is off to a slow start this year, as they have a 2-4 overall record and have not yet won a game in their conference (0-3). Their overall ranking in the state of Minnesota is 73rd, and they are towards the bottom of the conference. They may lack some experience on the squad, as there are only three seniors to lead the team: shortstop Kim Kurtzweg, outfielder Frances Zuniga, and outfielder Britany Reierson. This season is fortunately already better than last year’s, as the team went 0-17 and could not achieve much success. Having two wins is a good start, as they can hopefully generate some momentum moving forward. The head coach is Rod Tollefson, and this will be his fifth season coaching the Wolverines. The boy’s golf team so far this season is 1-1-1 and led by two seniors in Hunter Pederson and Captain Jordan Pretzel. The girls’ team is led
by one senior and Captain in Liz Theis, and she and Pretzel will be keys to both golf teams’ successes. The golf team has a simple philosophy: start young and play for a lifetime. There are many other aspects to how they perform out on the course, as one item to note is how well their techniques are polished. The boys head coach is Mike Feterl and the girls are led by Mary Mitchell. Track and Field has seniors Cole Bruhn, Eric Moreno, Jon Dufrane and Sam Thies to lead the Wolverines this season. There is only one senior girl this year, Jean Sickmann. The head coach for the boys’ team is led by Chad Johnson, and the girls’ team is head coached by Jill Warzecha.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary's will lean on senior talent TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer The Sleepy Eye Saint Mary High School baseball team is off to a very hot start, as they are 6-2 out of the gates to the 2015 season. They are currently the best team in their respectable conference, the Tomahawk Conference. Every game so far has been a conference game as well, and they are looking to create some more success of the start. They have scored 101 runs in just seven games, while only allowing 19. An average score for the Knights each game would look like approximately like 14-3 wins every game. Their first four games were decided by the mercy rule, in which they scored 21, 10, 19 and 14 runs. They also scored 15 runs in the following game, in a 15-11 win over Wabasso. Last season, the Knights finished 19-6 overall, and 13-3 in conference play. This year’s team features no underclassmen, as there eight seniors and five juniors. Senior infielder Brandon Heglet will again be a name to watch for the Knights this season, as he led the ball club in runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, runs batted in, stolen bases, slugging percentage, on base percentage and batting average. Senior pitcher David Surprenant will be the key guy on the mound
for the Knights, as last season he was 4-2 with a 3.08 earned run average. He also recorded 51 strikeouts in 36.1 innings pitched, while only walking 18. As a team, Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s is ridiculously talented at every aspect of the game. Last season head coach Bruce Woitas’ team made a pretty good run into sections, but could not prevail with what they wanted. It is a new year, and the Knights look even more dangerous this season. The boy’s golf team will have two seniors to set the tone this season, in Dylan Owens and Nick DeMaris. Their teammates include junior Ryan Heinrichs, sophomore Jaden Krebs, freshman Jaden Sellner and eighth-grader Andrew Neid. In the match win over GFW High School, Heinrichs was the medal winner with a 42 on the day. Neid scored a 47, Sellner had a 55, DeMaris had a 57, Owens possessed a score of 61 and Krebs scored a 72. The girl’s team this season also has two seniors in Anna Miller and Sarah Suprenant. The rest of the team includes junior Alyssa Rubey and sophomores Bailey Rutscher and Megan DeMaris. In the same action against GSW, it was a little closer of a match. The Knights narrowly won by two points, as Suprenant had the best score of 58, followed by Miller’s 59, Rubey’s 60,
Rutscher’s 76 and DeMaris’ 77. The Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s softball team is off to a nice roll, as they are 5-1 overall with the same conference record. Half of their victories have come because of the mercy rule this season, as their last win was against Springfield 12-1 in five innings. Head Coach Wendy Owens has five seniors in infielder Natalie Schroepfer, pitcher Laura Pelzel, infielder Ashley Helget, outfielder Cassie Smith and infielder Carly Hoffmann. There is a good mixture of talent on the roster, and more experience from last year’s squad. Last season, they were 16-8 overall, with an 11-5 conference record. They are hoping the experience from making some waves in sections last year can result in the best to come this year. The boys track and field team consists of either older guys or younger, with not much in between. The team consists of six seniors, one junior, one sophomore, four freshmen and two seventh-graders. The girl’s team provides much more depth, but less experience. There are four seniors, three juniors, eight sophomores, seven freshmen, four eighth-graders and one seventhgrader. Brian Bauleke is the head coach for both teams.

MANKATO EAST "Ranked 57th overall in the state, the Cougars will be relying on six seniors to take this squad to bigger and better things in 2015." continued from 27 a 13-7 record overall, and were successful in conference play with a 7-2 record. They finished second in the conference behind Mankato West, as West has gotten off to a fast start this year with an 8-1 record. The Cougars were undefeated at home last season, and they are so far in 2015 with a 4-0 record. Mankato East plays Mankato West on Tuesday, April 28th at Mankato East High School. West has already won against East earlier in the season, as the first game of the year was between in the two in a close 4-3 victory for West. Mankato East Track and Field has promise to make some noise for this spring season. The boys track team has guys of all ages on the team, as they have 18 seniors, 13 juniors, 22 sophomores, 20 freshmen and four eighth-graders. A 3-0 start is in the works for the boys, as head coach Jon Dierks has combined the assortment of grade levels to compete as one. On the season, the fastest time so far for the 100 meter dash belongs to junior
Ben Schwartz, as he ran 11.43 at the Big 9 Boys Tri on April 14th. The fastest time for the boy’s 110-meter hurdles belongs to junior Michael Miller for running it in 16.88 at the Big 9 Triangular Meet on April 20th. Freshman Richard Kamara ran the quickest time for the team so far for the boys 1,600 meter run with 4:52.98 at the Dean Bishop Invitational on April 18th. Senior Anjola Onadipe ran a speedy 23.62 200-meter dash at the Dean Bishop Invitational that same day as well. For the girl’s team, it is the same ratio of grade levels on that team as well. Some notable times from past events this season for the girls are as followed: junior Samantha Erickson ran the 100-meter hurdles in 17.86 seconds at the Dean Bishop Invitational, sophomore Emma Baynes ran the 100-meter dash in 13.32 seconds, and junior Sidney Colbrunn ran the 400 meter dash in 1:05.76. Bluejays look to make a climb
Hovering at the .500 mark, the Waseca baseball team looks to climb out from the middle of the pack in the Big South Conference. DEREK LAMBERT Sports Editor It’s been an up and down season for the Waseca Bluejays on the baseball diamond. Though head skipper Joel Hayford’s bunch has gone 4-4 to start the year, it’s a major improvement from last season’s 4-15 finish that saw losing streaks of five and six throughout the year. After graduating 15 seniors from last year’s squad, the Bluejays didn’t return a roster full of experience for 2015, but they’ve reloaded with talent on a lineup heavy with upperclassmen to fill the gaps. Catcher Jacob Walter returns this season as a staple behind the plate, leading the way as one of nine seniors on this year’s squad. Helping out the seniors are nine juniors getting their share of time on the field, laying the foundation for next season. Newcomer Eric Maas has seen time on the mound in only his sophomore season with Waseca. Currently, the Bluejays sit tied for fifth in the thirteen team Big South Conference, with
plenty of season left to make a push towards the top. Marshall sits in first place one the conference with a perfect 5-0 record in league play, and 9-1 overall on the season. Behind the Tigers sits the Fairmont Cardinals at 5-1, 10-1 overall, who the Bluejays lost narrowly to early in the season, falling 5-3. Also ahead of Waseca is Worthington and Windom Area, who have collected records of 5-2 and 4-1, respectively. With games remaining against Fairmont, Worthington, and tied for fifth New Ulm, the Bluejays have the opportunity to climb in the Big South standings heading into Section 2AA play. Ten games separate Waseca from the 2AA Tournament, giving them plenty of time to get into playoff form in hopes to extend their season as long as possible. The Section 2AA Tournament begins on May 19th, concluding on June 4th with the Section Final and the chance to play in the State Tournament in Minneapolis June 11th.

Gusties look to close out 2015 season on a positive note It's been a long season for the Gustavus Adolphus baseball team, but a strong finish could be on the horizon.
DEREK LAMBERT Sports Editor It’s been a rollercoaster season for the Gustavus Adolphus baseball team, as they sit 12-20 late in the season, with a 6-11 record in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Gusties have been decent at home, going 5-5 at their home field in St. Peter, but haven’t found their niche on the road just yet. At the plate, the Gusties have been able to get a steady amount
the team in runs batted in with 26. Along with Fuchs, sophomores Dalton Mattson and Josh Chatfield have been absolutely crushing the ball this season. Mattson, who hails from Princeton, Minn., has stepped up to the plate 102 times on the year, recording two doubles and 12 runs batted in, also batting an impressive .363. Chatfield, the sophomore from Apple Valley, has been hitting at a rate of .350 while reaching on eight doubles, two triples, and two home runs

of offense, led by Garrett Fuchs. Fuchs, a senior outfielder from Cold Spring, Minn., has batted an impressive .382 at the plate this season in 110 at bats. The former Ricori star has 42 hits that include five doubles and four triples, and ranks first on

this year to go along with 19 runs batted in. On the mound, Grant Soderberg leads the way with an earned runs against average of 3.14, going 3-3 in seven games started this season. Behind him is Michael Strelow, who’s
pitched for an ERA of 4.08 against a 2-5 record in seven games started. In his sixteenth season as the Gusties’ skipper, head coach Mike Carrol hopes to end the regular season on a good note as they finish out league play with a double header at St. John’s University this weekend in Collegeville, Minn.

New Ulm looks to go back to State in 2015 After winning back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013, the Eagles are looking to put up a third championship banner. LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer The New Ulm Eagles are coming off an impressive 2014 campgin that saw them in the State tournament with a 19-6 record. The Eagles will be looking to build off the Big South Conference championship and State tournament appearance into a state championship in 2015. The Eagles will be looking to extend their State tournament streak to four years after winning back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013 and losing in the first round to Rockford in 2014. New Ulm was great right out of the gate in 2014 as they won their first six games. The Eagles then dropped their next four games, including a 6-0 loss to Kasson-Mantorville, the 2014 State Champion. The Eagles then rattled off 13 wins in a row to reach the State tournament. The Eagles were to two seed in the Section 3 AA south bracket, knocking off the one seeded Pipestone Area twice in the section tournament. The Eagles scored 7.7 runs a game while giving up only 3 a game, third best in the section. Head Coach Kristi Andersen Loose is set to lead a young New Ulm team. There are just two seniors on this year’s roster, but nine juniors and four sophomores to help fill out the team. Seniors Briana Sieve and Tori Botten will lead the young team that is out to a hot start with an 8-2 record. They have wins over Maple River, Hutchinson and St. Peter. Their two losses are to Prior Lake and Kasson-Mantorville. New Ulm still has a tough task ahead of them, they have a game against Champlin Park on May 2nd in Lakeville before traveling to Waseca on May 7th and a home battle with Worthington on May 8th. The Eagles wrap up their season with a home game against Fairmont and then travel to Shoreview to take on Mounds View. The New Ulm baseball team is looking to build off of a steller 17-5 year. The Eagles finished with a 9-1 record in the Big South Conference, but fell in the semifinals of sub-section play to Luverne. The Eagles had a chance

to battle back through the double elimination bracket, but fell to St. James Area 5-3. The Eagles had a stellar start to the 2014 season, they beat state entrant Fairmont 3-1 on their opening day, but fell to Marshall 5-1 two days later. The Eagles were able to rattle off eight wins in a row following their loss to help set themselves up with the two seed in the Section 3 AA south tournament. The Eagles were great on both sides of the field, as they scored 6.5 runs a game while only giving up 3.8 runs a game, which was second best in the section. In 2015 the Eagles are off to a slower start, with a 4-4 record. New Ulm does have solid leadership with 10 seniors on the roster including, Connor Forbrook, Alex Stark, Jesses Baumgartner, Bailey Batt, Wyatt Peterson, Luke Irmiter, Andrew Stewart, Matthew Rowley, Jarin Spence and Wyatt Oelberg will lead the Eagles this season. The Eagles also have one junior and three sophomores on the 2015 roster. New Ulm also has a new baseball coach for the 2015 season, Kevin Briggs is New Ulm
High School science teacher is set to take over for Jay Backer, who reigned after last season. “It is exciting and I am glad that the school district is giving me a chance,” said Briggs to the New Ulm Journal. With a new head coach the Eagles will have some adjustments to make, but the standards are still at New Ulm, especially after a successful 2014, that isn’t stopping Briggs. “I have learned to adjust and just do it. I am glad that the standard is high – I am glad that they want to win. We need to focus not so much on expecting to win without doing the hard work. We have to do the hard work and then expect to win,” Briggs said to The Journal. The Eagles have a tough road ahead to get back into the South Central Conference race. They have a game at Luverne on May 4th, and then take on St. James Area to get some redemption on last year’s loss. The Eagles wrap up their season with a game at Fairmont on May 12th.
