Mankato West track and field looking for positives

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer For Mankato West boy’s track head coach Matthew Kolb, the theme will be development. After losing quite a lot of athletes from the 2015 team, the 2016 roster will fea-

ture 18 new freshmen and 17 new upperclassmen for a total of 70 athletes. All the new faces will not change Kolb’s plans for this season however. “We want to finish in the top three spots in the Big 9 [Conference],” Kolb said. “We also want to finish in the top half of our section and send several athletes to the State Meet.” When mentioning some returning players, senior Chris Olsen is the first to be mentioned. He is a returning state competitor in the 110 Meter

high hurdles. Olsen set the West indoor records in the 60 Meter high hurdles at a 7.70 mark, as the previous record held was at 7.84. Olsen also set a record in the 60 Meter Intermediate high hurdles at 7.48. He will be a tremendous help in the 300 intermediate hurdles and the 110 high hurdles. Senior Josiah Dahlgren is their Big Nine Conference champ in the triple jump and will be a key for the long jump as well as a relay member. “Senior Colter Killion, sophomore Jack Brown and sophomore Matthew Thompson will be a good trio in the pole vault for us,” Kolb stated. Also mentioned is senior Jake Jancoski, who will be the lead in the open 1600 and the 3200 Meter. Sophomores Derek Engen, Ian Sandry, Antonio Berrones and Kellen Brudwick will aid in distance and the 4x800 Meter. Quarter-mile runners Tyler Defore, Mason Balster, Nick Christionson, Jacob Christianson, Hyden Zeigler and Sam Ambrose will run in open 400M and 4x400’s. Sprinters CJ Terry, Melik Davis, Jared Lim, Jonathon Sikel and Tristen Altenburg will be in the 100M and 200M plus relays. The weights will be handled by Garrett Shumski and Thomas Bigaouette. High Jumpers include 8th grader Jonathon Sikel and Junior Erik Krenz. Some key matchups for

the boys this season will be the True Team meet and the Big Nine meet. They were the defending champions last season, but with the influx of talent this season that is new who knows how they will do. “We want to finish in the top three in the Big 9 Conference, and qualify for True Team State,” Scott Carlson, the girl’s track and field coach said. Key returns include for the girl’s team include Erica Benson, (high jump, 200, 400, 4x200, and the hurdles.) Chelsea Schafer, (pole vault and triple jump) Kristina Johns, (100, 200, long jump, 4x200) Alyiah Dawkins, (high jump, long jump, and the 4x200) Claire Rehome,

(shot put and Discus) Maggie Cusey, (shot put and Discus) Kenzie Yaeger, (high jump) Caiti Flannery, (800, 400, and the 4x800) Jenni Schwartz, (4x400, 4x800, 800, and the mile) Sunshine Langworthy, (mile and the 4x800) and Ana Goelner for the mile and the 4x800. Key meets for the Mankato West girls will be the Shakopee Relays on April 22, Hamline Elite Meet April 29, True Team Sections at Mankato West May 10, and the Big 9 Conference May 27.

St. Clair baseball to stick together in 2016

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer Coming off a 4-12 season, the St. Clair Cyclones are looking to build better success in 2016. The team is full of upper classmen, as 11 of the 14 players on the roster are juniors and seniors. With great experience should come better knowledge of the game, and head coach Tyler Sander knows that. “Our theme this season is to stick together as a family,” Sander said. “No matter the outcome, we play as one.” It has been rough in recent years for the Cyclones, as just in the past three seasons they have tallied a record of 5-33. This season is a new one, and the Cyclones must stay competitive in the Valley confer-

ence to have a shot at success in the section playoffs. “We have to compete every day, whether it is practice or in games,” Sander stated. The seniors that will be looked upon to lead the squad this season are pitcher Mitchell Peterson, pitcher Brandon Freitag, outfielder Joe Miller, outfielder Trae

Drummer, outfielder Riku Nojima and infielder Tayler Lehmann. These guys have been through the uttermost worst times for St. Clair baseball, and hopefully as a team they can send these guys off as winners. Freitag is their go-to guy on the hill, as his performance on the mound will set

the tempo for most games. Junior catcher Michael Anderson is also a name to look for when mentioning returning players, as he is a good jumpstart for the offense and calls good games behind the plate. A couple of incoming players to look for in 2016 is sophomore outfielder Dylan Schons and sophomore pitcher Kylan Geiger. The Cyclones have started their season of to a 1-2 start, as they lost to Sibley East high school 9-5 and Alden-Conger High School 7-4 to open up their season. They are coming off a 6-5 victory against the Martin Luther-Granada-Huntley-East Chain-Truman Jaguars. Key matchups coming up for the season will be against Janesville -Waldor f- Pember ton, Martin County West, Cleveland and the always tough Mankato Loyola. The Cyclones play the Cleveland Clippers April 22, as well as May 10. Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton will be on May 3rd, Martin County West will be on May 12 and Mankato Loyola will be played twice on May 14 and May 17.

Cleveland baseball and softball to compete in 2016

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer With baseball season fully underway the Cleveland Clippers’ baseball team is back in action and hitting the fields. The team is coming off of a 2014-15 campaign that saw them finish with a record of 4-11 so expect the team to be working on building off of that season and working towards a better win percentage. “Our goals are to compete for a conference championship and be competitive come section playoff time,” Head Coach Jeffery Helget said. The team is entering the year with only one senior on the team so it will be a youth filled season but Helget is looking forward to seeing how these young players have progressed. “We have been a very young team the last two years (8th/9th/10th graders). These kids are now older and I look forward to seeing them compete against competition equivalent to their age. I also look forward to seeing how these players have pro-

gressed and compete,” Helget said. While the team is young that doesn’t mean there isn’t experience on the squad. Helget noted that there are nine players returning to the team that have started varsity at some point during their time playing. He also noted plenty of players to keep an eye on.

Helget noted sophomore Carter Kopet who is a threeyear letter winner, two-time all-valley conference selection, as well as being voted MVP, best hitter, and best pitcher for the team last year. Coach Helget also noted freshman Bryce Novak, junior Nick Douglas, junior Brandon Seitz and Austin Plonsky as players to watch.

Helget had high praise for Plonksy. “Austin has been voted the teams best fielder the past two years. Defensively, he is one of the better fielders I’ve coached.” With the season currently underway the Clippers are sitting on a 1-1 record early on in the year. In their opening game against the Nicollet

Raiders the boys were able to pretty easily walk away with a victory on their home turf. At the end of the day the Clippers would end the day with a very convincing win over the Raiders with a score of 9-2. While the joy of that first victory was still fresh the Clippers weren’t quite able to overcome their next opponent in the Randolph Rockets. It was a hard fought game, and ended closely contested, but unfortunately for the Clippers they would fall short and lose the game 2-4. While losses are never fun what the early games in the season have shown is that the young team is ready to compete and give it their all. As far as upcoming games Helget noted a couple of teams that are the teams radar as the schedule unfolds. “Mankato Loyola, JWP, ML-GHECT, Martin County West are all solid teams within our conference that we will have to bring our best game to compete with,” Helget said. With the season fully underway, the youth of the team bringing about experience, and the signs that they are already showing in improvement it could end up being a great year for the Clippers.

CLEVELAND continued from A4 ‘“Austin has been voted the teams best fielder the past two years. Defensively, he is one of the better fielders I’ve coached.”’ The Clippers’ softball team is headed by Dan Fredrickson and helped by first year assistant coach, Sandy Hollerich. The team is coming off of a 2014-2015 campaign that saw them finish with a record of 8-9 and a finish in fourth place within their conference. While the nine losses may seem like

a lot, the silver lining of that record is each loss came to a team that was sporting a winning record. The team also ended up having a total of six games being cancelled and

it was noted that all of those games could have been potential wins for the team. “That 4th place finish was an amazing accomplishment considering the quality of softball teams in the conference last season,” said Fredrickson. This year they will be look-

ing to start fresh after three vital players moved on from their high school career. “We lost three key seniors that have been the absolute life blood of our program for 4

years. All three were four year starters and difference making players in every game,” explained Fredrickson. “They helped pass that work ethic and passion for the game onto many of our young players. The impact and legacy of those 3 girls will continue to show in our softball program for years.” Goals and expectations for this year’s team are pretty simple and straight to the point. “I expect us to compete every game with passion and a love for the game. We have a very young team that will continue to improve every game,” said Fredrickson. While the team may have lost some key players, there are plenty of girls on the team that should be able to eventually make up for those missing faces. Among those noted that are key include senior Holly Gibbs. She is the team’s catcher and had the best batting average last season at .450. “Holly is a terrific catcher and one of the best hitters in the Valley Conference. She is a team leader,” said Fredrickson. Among the other players that were noted as key players were Lilly Hollerich, Kaleigh McCabe, Amanda Smith, and Penni Jo Brenke. When asked if there are

Photos by SPX Sports any players for fans to keep an eye on for the future, there were a few girls noted but in particular Coach Fredrickson said that ninth grade first basemen Karna Ziebarth, “is a player with a big future ahead.” “Our future is off the charts if these young players all stay together. We are going to be a very formidable force very

soon,” said Coach Fredrickson. With the season underway, the girls are off to a 1-1 start. “This immediate future is all about learning what takes to compete at this level. And these girls are all very coachable and close as a team. I really, really like the makeup of this team,” said Fredrickson.

Saints softball looks to stay competitive

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The girl’s softball team is also starting their season at St. Peter High School. The team is coached Heidi Niemeyer and assisted by Mollie Meyer and Tom Witty. The Saints season started against Sibley East and Fairmont. They won against Sibley East and lost at Fairmont 1-0 for a current record of 1-1. The Saint’s team is very large this year with 20 players on the varsity roster including one freshman, one sophomore, ten juniors and eight seniors. Mackenzie Brey is the lone freshman, Olivia McCabe is the lone sophomore, Haley Goebel, Kelli Hanson, Alexis Reese, Kaitlyn Brey, Mallorie Chabot, Taylor McCarthy, Jordan Schueneman, Alex Eberhart, Hailey Kennedy and Claire Thomp-

son round out the juniors and Emily Carpenter, Maranda Sorensen, Jennifer Bergeson, Jaide Fondie, Megan Roach, Rahma Abdi, Sidney Welp and Autumn Maas make up the senior class. There are five pitchers are the squad including Hanson, Brey, Bergeson, Brey and Mass. The only catcher on the team is Schueneman and the rest of the girls are in-fielders and out-fielders. Last season the girls had an overall record of 7-3. Welp led the team last season with an impressive .500 batting average and graduated senior Valerie Bresnahan led the team in RBIs with five. Current Saint McKenzie Brey was a pitcher for the team last year and has a lot of experience to add this season. Last year the Saints lost their first two games to New Ulm and Farmington then won against Tri-City United and Waseca, lost to Belle Plaine and then went on a five-game winning streak to end the season against Sibley East, Worthington twice, Waseca and LeSueur – Henderson. The Saints did so well in the Section 2AA Tour-

nament, beating Blue Earth Area 6-5, Albert Lea 18-8 and Maple River 4-3 before losing 3-0 and 6-0 to LeSueur – Henderson in Casewell Park, which led to the end of their season run. The Saints have never made it to the State Tournament. Currently, Fairmont leads the Big South West standings but St. Peter is right behind them in second followed by Marshall, New Ulm, Worthington, Blue Earth Area and Waseca. Next on the Saints schedule is the two-day Mankato East tournament, Tri-City United, Waseca, LeSueur – Henderson, Fairmont, New Ulm, Marshall, Belle Plaine, Blue Earth Area, two Worthington games and Saint James Area as their last regular season game. The Section 2AA Tournament starts May 18 and in Caswell Park in North Mankato and ends on June 2. If the Saints are able to win the section playoffs and make it to state it will be June 9-10. St. Peter baseball seeks success KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The boy’s baseball team started their regular season in early April. Kurt Moelter is the head coach and is assisted by Jacob Malz, Jared Baron, Andy Viker, Jeff Knutson and Shea Roerhkasse. The Saints are a part of the Big South Conference along with Pipestone Area, New Ulm, Worthington, Saint James Area, Fairmont, Luverne, Jackson County Central, Marshall, Blue Earth Area, Waseca and Redwood Valley. The Saints hold a current record of 1-3 on the 2016 season. They got off to a slow start by losing their first three to Worthington 20-10, Belle Plaine 7-2 and Fairmont 7-4 before bouncing back and winning against New Ulm 7-5 April 15. This year’s roster consists

of 14 boys. There is one freshman, Andy Regner, one sophomore, Owen Little, four juniors Carter Hrdlicka, Jake McCabe, Parker Baron and Jordein Marquette and eight seniors, Alex Hoehn, Mitch Johnson, Jack Olinger, Nate Wenner, Cullen Bruce, Jordan Hermel, Mitch Harlow and Dustin West. The three pitchers for the team are Hoehn, Johnson and Bruce, all of whom are seniors. The Saints have two catchers in McCabe and Wenner and the rest of the team are infielders and outfielders. Last season the Saints struggled, ending the year with an overall record of 6-14. That record put them in tenth place in the conference only above Jackson County Central, Blue Earth Area and New Ulm. Several of their season losses came at the hands of non-conference teams like Tri-City United, Belle Plaine, Sibley East and Norwood Young America. In the Section 2AA Tournament last year the Saints played their first and only game against Tri-City United and lost 6-5 putting them out

of the tournament and ending their hopes for State. A plus for the Saints is their three pitchers were all on the varsity team last year and therefore have experience going into the new season. The Saints hold the 10th position again this season. Pipestone Area is first place, then Fairmont, Marshall, Jackson County Central, Worthington, Luverne, Windom Area, New Ulm and Saint James and just above Waseca, Blue Earth Area and Redwood Valley. While the Saints have had some success in the section playoffs they have never made it to the State Tournament. Next up for the Saints is Blue Earth Area, Tri-City United and Sibley East high school. They play their last regular season game May 24. The section playoffs start May 27 and go until June 9. If the boys do well they can make it to the State Tournament June 16-17 where the Championship game will be played at Target Field. Photo by SPX Sports

Sleepy Eye Softball: attitude, preparation, effort the right mindset with that approach. “Our goals are to be competitive in a very tough Tomahawk Conference,” Hoffmann added. “We want to celebrate progress and work on

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer Already winning their first four of six games, the Sleepy Eye Indians look to power through the Tomahawk Conference in 2016. The Indians will have a rather even roster when it comes to experience and youth. There are two eighth-graders, one freshman, four sophomores, four juniors and three seniors on the roster. Very balanced, as that will not only help them this season but going forward for further success beyond 2016. “Our theme is APE: attitude, preparation and effort,” head coach Tim Hoffmann said. “We want to control the ‘controllables’ and not worry about things out of our control.” Hoffmann has made it his mission to keep the girls in

‘“Our theme is APE: attitude, preparation and effort,” head coach Tim Hoffmann said. “We want to control the ‘controllables’ and not worry about things out of our control.”’ getting better every day.” Hoffmann also talked about what major keys will be needed for success, as passion and chemistry was mentioned. For such a wide range of grades and ages, this group is sure to mesh in some way positive. All three seniors will be looked upon to lead the In-

senior first-baseman, hit .361 last season and was named an All-Tomahawk Conference player. The last senior is the shortstop Natalie Stevens, who hit a tremendous .397 in 2015 and was named to the honorable mention All-Conference team. The girls will have key matchups in place when they

their last game. Sleepy Eye will get their rematch on April 26 however, as that matchup will be a must-see. They will face Wabasso next for a double-header on April 21. Wabasso should be one of the teams to beat in the Tomahawk Conference, as it will be no easy task. A New Ulm Cathedral dou-

ble-header will be followed after the Wabasso games on April 28, as the Indians will not be able to take off any week in a tough conference. Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s will be challenged on May 5, also in a double-header showdown. Sleepy Eye won their first three games of the season, defeating Cleveland 6-0, and outscored Minnesota Valley Lutheran 35-8 in two games. Mountain Lake Area high school was able to ten-run the Indians 11-0, but just three days later the Indians took out their frustrations against G-F-W high school, 12-0. In six games, Haas is batting .588, with 9 runs scored, 5 runs batted in and 2 doubles. As a team, the Indians are hitting .329 and have scored 54 runs. The offense has been cooking, and the pitching should get a on a consistent streak to have Sleepy Eye a big threat amongst the Tomahawk Conference.

Le Sueur-Henderson softball wants run at State

TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer After a terrific 2015 season in which the Le Sueur-Henderson Giants softball team went 13-1 in the Minnesota River Conference and 23-4 overall, the Giants are hungry for more. Le Sueur-Henderson was a Class AA runner-up in 2014 and finished in 5th place in Class AA in 2015. They will be expecting more of the same success in 2016, as they have a very deep and experienced roster to work with. “We have ten girls returning that have started multiple games,” head coach Eric Lewis said. With a team of that stature, they are more likely than not to be poised for a title run. Senior pitcher Carlie Brandt is the feature of the Giants, as she was a 2015 AA All-State member and the Minnesota

River Conference Most Valuable Pitcher. In 25 games she started as a junior, she went 22-3 while striking out an eye-popping 330 batters. Brandt gave up only 10 earned runs through 164 innings pitched. Safe to say when Brandt takes the field, the Giants are set up nicely to win the ballgame. She will be looked to carry the team once more, as it will be her last season as a Giant. Not only will Brandt be an impact player for Le Sueur-Henderson, as basically the entire team is something to take note of. Senior catcher Sam Winter, junior infielder Mikayla Reinhardt, senior infielder Kalie Devine and sophomore infielder Alicia Boettcher were 2015 All-Conference players. Boettcher, along with senior Mandy Doerr and senior four-year starter Katherine Cronk were named to the All-Section team as well in 2015. Sophomore Acy Adamzak will be returning for her sophomore year, as she was a starter her freshman year on such a good team as is. The girls are locked and

loaded for a great season ahead, but nothing will be taken for granted. “We will look to continue to improve our skills daily throughout the course of the season,” Lewis said about his talented roster. The Giants have started their season at 3-2, as they were able to win their first two games, lose two and then win their last contest. The season started with a 4-2 win over New Prague high school, followed by a 6-0 shutout of Jordan high school. Le Sueur-Henderson would then struggle against a very good Pipestone Area team, as they lost back-toback games by scores of 16-1 and 12-5, respectively. The girls would bounce back against Norwood-Young America, winning 5-2. There will be times where the Giants will be tested this season, which makes it all the more fun to really see what this team is made of. Norwood-Young America should continue to be a tough foe all season, as they play them next on May 10. Although shutout, Jordan will be a

Photo by SPX Sports team to create havoc as well. The Giants will play them again May 3rd. Belle Plaine may be their toughest conference opponent, as they play them back-to-back games to end the regular season May

17 for a double-header. “Section opponents that should be key matchups include St. Peter, Belle Plaine and Jordan high school,” Lewis said.

New Ulm baseball and softball ready to hit the diamond

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer With the arrival of spring also brings the start of baseball and the New Ulm Eagles are already back to work on the year. It’s going to be a team that is light on experience but as a group they can very easily come together and make a huge run. There are only two seniors on the team this year in second baseman Cooper Forbrook and pitcher Spencer Landsteiner. While they will be the only players with prior experience the team has a whole slew of eleventh graders coming into play. In fact, the large majority of the team will be made up of that grade. In fact, to be specific, the team has ten out of fifteen players coming from the eleventh grade. As of writing the Eagles are off to a hot start. The team has played in six games thus far and walked away with victories in four of them. The opened up the year playing against the Hutchinson Tigers and walked away with a three to one victory. The next game the Eagles dismantled the Blue Earth Area Bucca-

New Ulm would end up going on a two game win streak with victories over the St. Peter Saints and Faribault

Falcons but notched their second loss of the season when they squared off against the Belle Plaine Tigers. It wasn’t the best showing for the Eagles that day and they walked away losing by double digits with a score of one to eleven. The Eagles will have to hope to meet them again come tournament time if they want to get revenge as the Tigers are not on the schedule again for the rest of the season. They will however get their chance at revenge on Marshall coming May 3. While the first game took place in Eagle territory the upcoming game will be played in Marshall. ‘ Award winners from last year’s Baseball Banquet Awards that will be returning this year are All Conference winner and ‘Offensive Player of the Year’ JT Hoffman, ‘Most Improved’ winner Brandon Mehlhop, and ‘All Selection’ and Wellman winner Connor Forbrook. The team plays by the 20 roles philosophy. They believe there are twenty roles to be filled on the team and that those roles can be filled by anywhere from thirteen to eighteen people. Each one of the roles on the team is as equally as important as the one before it if they want to achieve success as a team. The boys will be looking to build as much momentum as a group that they can as they

prepare, and hope to move on to play in the state tournament. This year the tournament will be held on June 16 and 17. The New Ulm Eagles girls’ softball team is back together and they are ready to get this season underway. In what is sure to be a fun filled season for all those involved the girls will be trying to march their way to a tournament appearance while also trying to send the seniors off on the best note they can. This year’s team has a lot of seniors on the roster and with a lot of seniors brings a lot of experience that should hopefully help these girls reach their goals on the year. The seniors that will be making their way to the field for the Eagles are infielder Hunter Ahlness, second basemen Kelsey Anderson, first basemen Brittany Denn, catcher Nikki Dittrich, as well as outfielders Emma Berg, Bergan Frost, Rachel Kehren, and Rachel Gruber. The team’s amount of seniors makes up for half of the squad as eight of sixteen will be playing in their last year for New Ulm. Experience is what is going to end up making or breaking this year’s team as it is dominantly not only seniors

Carli Botten. With a team so chalk full of experience and returning players it will be an interesting test to see how far they girls can make it. With the season already underway the Eagles are sitting on a record of 2-2 as of writing. The girls opened up the year the on the wrong foot and put up a notch in the

end up being and they won both of them. The first win of the season came up against the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers and was a walloping, as the Eagles would win that game by a double digit shut out of 10-0. In the game after the Eagles posted up another high scoring affair the next week against the Marshall Ti-

gers. It was a narrow escape but the Eagles pulled it off and won the game 10-9. The short two game win streak didn’t last long though. In their game against the St. Peter Saints the Eagles would fall short of victory and fell to the Saints 5-7. The girls will have to wait until later in the season to try and mount some revenge, as they will welcome St. Peter to their home field on May 5. The last game of the season will take place on May 20 in an away game against the Mounds View Mustangs. This year’s team is being head coached by Kristi Anderson Loose along with assistant coaches Carla Berg, Danielle Anderson, and Rebecca Loose.

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer The Waseca Bluejays are back in action and ready for some baseball! The boys are back on the field and gearing up for another season and will be hoping to bounce back from a year that has gotten off to a shaky at best start. To help them get there head coach Joel Hayford will be getting help from assistant coaches Dale Kugath and Tink Larson as they look to build a team that can play well together and win games. The team is mixed up of purely eleventh and twelfth graders. Eleventh graders will just slightly have more players on the field with thirteen of the twenty one players being in their junior year of high school. They are currently coming off of a season where they escaped with an above .500 record finishing the season at 12-10. The current season hasn’t gotten off to the hottest of starts for the young Bluejay’s team. Thus far, as of writing, the boys have played a total of five games and still haven’t been able to find their way

Photo by SPX Sports into the win column. Opening up the year the Bluejays played four straightaway games starting with an outing against the LeSuer-Henderson Giants. The Giants made quick work of the Bluejays and won the game 15-7. In the following weeks games the Bluejays played a double header against the Marshall Tigers. In the opening game of the night the

Bluejays just narrowly lost the game by one point but in the following game it was an absolute trouncing on the team as Marshal defeated Waseca 23-0. The next two games wouldn’t get nearly as out of hand as that one though. Having said that, the Bluejays still weren’t able to muster up the strength for a win over the Mankato East Cougars or the Fairmont Cardinals as

Waseca lost both games at a combined score of 11-5. While it is never a good thing to start off a season on a losing streak there are silver linings that one could take going forward with the rest of the season. The away game stand is over, and Waseca should enjoy more home games and rest going forward with the rest of the season. Not having to worry about the travel and weariness that

goes along with travel should help the young Blue jays figure out how to stand on their feet. For frustrated fans waiting for that first win don’t get to frustrated because better times should be just around the corner. The Bluejays had some misfortune when Tink Larson Field burned down this year. In a wonderful baseball community, they will rise and come back from this devastating accident. There is still plenty of time to bounce back and the large majority of the remaining games on the season are conference games. With a few wins and allowing momentum to gain and build it could end up being another terrific season for the young squad. Leading the way for the softball team is head coach Melissa Cox and she will be doing her best to develop a team of girls that can compete against anyone. “Our goal for this year is to compete through the last out of every game. We have moved up a section this year and we face some well-rounded and strong teams” Cox said. In order to do so the Blue jay’s will have to rely on a group of seniors in order to

The team is entering the season with eight seniors, eight juniors, and a single sophomore and freshman. “All three seniors have demonstrated great communication and leadership on and off of the field,” Coach Cox said on which players are standing out to her. In particular Coach Cox mentioned Madi Priebe, Mackinzee Hayes, and Michaela Groll as player that should have an

eye kept on. “I am excited to see what we are capable of with many of our players having years of experience at the varsity level. Our team this year is full of players that are very competitive and hard workers,” Cox said. Looking at the season which is already underway there are a lot of tough opponents that will be coming up on the schedule. Cox noted two in particular that stand

out though. “St. Peter and New Ulm have historically been softball power houses. I look forward to the conference match up and challenge. They are both aggressive and well-disciplined teams that pose multiple threats on the softball diamond,” Cox said. With the season already underway the girls will be looking to finish the year by rebounding from the rough start that they’ve gotten off to. They’ve only played a total of five games but haven’t been able to win one of them yet. Not only will they have to try to right the track to victory, but a great start will be trying to narrow the margin of victory that opponents are seeing against them. The Blue jay’s opened the year on a three game home stand starting against Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers but fell to them 4-8. In their double header against the Marshall Tigers the Blue jay’s fell both times and lost both games by a combined score of 12-3. Coming up against the Jordan Jaguars the Bluejays suffered their biggest loss of the season so far. The Bluejays were beaten and blown out by a double digits and fell the Jaguars 0-10. The next week was slightly better but still weren’t able to close the gap as they played the Fair-

mont Cardinals. While it isn’t the greatest start there is always ways to fix things and one can expect that the Bluejays are working on figuring a way to do that as well. “It is important that we compete and take the game one pitch at a time,” Cox said. Waseca High School is getting geared up and ready for action in the world of outdoor sports. With spring time and the nice weather upon us the world of track, golf, and tennis is about to be back in full swing as the young boys and girls. Starting off with track head coach Dave Abel is excited about things. “This year’s teams are young and full of potential,” Abel said. With about half of the teams returning for both the boys and girls team it will be up to the kids with experience to try and help along the new comers. “We want to win our conference, qualify for true team state, and qualify as many athletes on to the state meet as possible,” Abel said on their goals for the year. When asked which players are looking like they will stand out Coach Abel noted Cole Streich, Dylan Winegar, and Elijah Carter on the boys side, and Kourtney Kulset and Aubrey Highum for the girls team.

Flipping over to golf the boys are playing with a fourman team this year. One senior in Dustin Edstrom, juniors Andrew Weber and Nick Rolling, and lastly seventh grader Griffin Seifert. They opened up their year against St. Peter but lost in very close fashion, falling 185186. They would bounce back the next week against Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton H.S. and topple them 172-182. In the following week against Bethlehem High they would take another loss. The girls’ team has three seniors in Jenna Nelson, Megan Filzen, and Sydney O’Brien, along with tenth grader Kaitlin Altman and ninth grader Crystal Cariveau. The girls are sitting on a 2-1 record so far having lost their opening game against St. Peter but bouncing back against Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton High School and Bethlehem. The boys’ tennis team is also in action but they haven’t gotten off to the hottest of starts. Led by a team with four seniors and a solid mix of all the other grades they will be looking to cross-correct their path. Thus far the boys are off to a 0-4 start after chalking up losses to New Prauge, Owatonna, Redwood Valley, and Mankato West.

Cleveland softball builds for the future

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer It is softball time again folks and the Cleveland Clipper’s girls are ready to hit the field once again. This year’s team is being coached by fourth year Dan Fredrickson and helped by first year assistant coach, Sandy Hollerich. The team is coming off of a 2014-2015 campaign that saw them finish with a record of 8-9 and a finish in fourth place within their conference. While the nine losses may seem like a lot, the silver lining of that record is each loss came to a team that was sporting a winning record. The team also ended up having a total of six games being cancelled and it was noted that all of those games could have been potential wins for the team. “That 4th place finish was an amazing accomplishment

considering the quality of softball teams in the conference last season,” said Coach Fredrickson. This year they will be looking to start fresh after three vital players moved on from their high school career. “We lost 3 key seniors that have been the absolute

work ethic and passion for the game onto many of our young players. The impact and legacy of those 3 girls will continue to show in our softball program for years.” Goals and expectations for this year’s team are pretty simple and straight to the point.

son. While the team may have lost some key players, there are plenty of girls on the team that should be able to eventually make up for those missing faces. Among those noted that are key include senior Holly Gibbs. She is the team’s catcher and had the

“Our future is off the charts if these young players all stay together. We are going to be a very formidable force very soon,” said Coach Fredrickson. “This immediate future is all about learning what takes to compete at this level. best batting average last season at .450. “Holly is a terrific catcher and one of the best hitters in the Valley Conference. She is a team leader,” said Coach

Fredrickson. Among the other players that were noted as key players were Lilly Hollerich, Kaleigh McCabe, Amanda Smith, and Penni Jo Brenke. When asked if there are any players for fans to keep an eye on for the future, there were a few girls noted but in particular Coach Fredrickson said that ninth grade first basemen Karna Ziebarth, “is a player with a big future ahead.” “Our future is off the charts if these young players all stay together. We are going to be a very formidable force very soon,” said Coach Fredrickson. With the season underway, the girls are off to a 1-1 start. “This immediate future is all about learning what takes to compete at this level. And these girls are all very coachable and close as a team. I really, really like the makeup of this team,” said Coach Fredrickson.

MVL softball and baseball rising to occasion

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer Ladies and gentleman it is softball time once again and the girls of the Minnesota Valley Lutheran Chargers are off and running in the 2016 season. The girls are coming off of a season that saw them go for a record of 5-17 and place in a tie for 97th with a total score of 29.1 in the QRF rankings. The head coach for this year’s team is Barb Leopold, and assistant coach’s Dale Schlottman, Jeff Koepsell, and Konnie Kuck will be helping him out. “To continue to improve throughout the season. To not only “be in games” that we play, but to rise to the challenge of finishing them,” Leopold said on their goals for the year. The team will be headed by senior infielder Maddie Spurgin, outfielder Rochelle Fluegge, outfielder Syre-

na Meyer, outfielder Megan Westphal, outfielder Deiree Grochow, and caher Allison Grunke. Juniors Brittany Sanders, Hannah Biednbender, Brianna Sanders, and Brynn Alfred will also be joining the field for some experience. The rest of the team is made up of tenth graders Maddie Spurgin, Noelle Olson, Kylie Ulrich, and lone ninth grader Lauren Paulsen. The girls are off to a bit of a rocky start but there is plenty of time left in the season to figure out what is going wrong and work on fixing that. They are currently off to an 0-3 start and have been getting walloped in the process. In their three total games they have been outscored 52-9. In the opening game of the year the Chargers played against the Sleepy Eye Indians in their home opener. The Indians showed their strength and ended up winning the game 22-3. The following week against the Wabasso Rabbits was very similar as the Chargers fell to the Rabbits 22-1. Last week’s rematch against the Indians was a better outing than their opening

one but they still weren’t able to find success and lost the game 12-5. With lots of time left in the season to improve the girls will be looking to use that time to continue and build a report with their teammates, work on slowing down opposing teams offense, and continue to work on steadily improving week by week. “I am excited about the attitude of the team. They are willing to try whatever is asked of them in improving their skills and playing to a higher level each game,” Leopold said. Minnesota Valley Lutheran Chargers are ready once again to hit the baseball field and get their season going. The team is coming off of a season that saw them finish with a total record of 7-12 so one can expect that they will be looking to push that record closer to the .500 mark. Head coach John Gunderson along with his assistant coach Kevin Fischer are leading the team. There aren’t a lot of seniors on the team this year, three to be exact, and those three are outfielders Noah Edwards and Jacob Hoffman along with pitcher

Silas Peterson. There are only one tenth grader on the team in Jordan Fischer and the rest of the team will make up of juniors William Rauh, Sam Genelin, Alec Gratz, Sallahan Diersen, Nick Fischer, Aj Buboltz, and Sam Boeder. It will be up to this lot of boys to try and turn this season into a winning one. With the season currently underway it looks like they have a decent chance at being able to do just that. Thus far into the season the team is sitting on a 2-2 record and there is plenty of time left further that score even more so. The Chargers opened up the season playing an away game against the Sleepy Eye Indians. To say it was a high scoring opener for the season would be a bit of an understatement as both teams came out firing on all cylinders trying to get their season started off with a win. While the Chargers would give it their all they still ended up coming up just short of a victory and fell to the Indians 8-11. Minnesota Valley Lutheran would fall the following week as well when they were pitted off against the Wabasso Rab-

bits. It wasn’t quite the high scoring affair at the previous game but both teams still did manage to combine for a total of 13 runs on the board. The Chargers were able to put up a nice amount of points but in the end it wasn’t enough as the Chargers fell to the Rabbits 8-5. Things have started to turn around for the Chargers though in the past couple of weeks. They got their first win of the season two weeks ago when they had their very first home game of the year against the Sleepy Eye Indians in their first rematch of the year. Neither team was able to put up the amount of runs they did in their last outing, as the Chargers used their defensive abilities to topple the Indians. At the end of all the innings the Chargers won the game with a score of 6-3. Their winning ways would continue the following week when they played against the Mankato Loyola Crusaders. It ended up being a lengthy game but the Chargers managed to outlast the Crusaders and walked away with a victory of 5-2.

St. Peter golf looking to top conference

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer Next on the Saints spring agenda is boys and girls golf. Both teams have already participated in several meets and had success. Neil Doose coaches the boys. Coach Doose is very

son who was also a section qualifier, Wenner a two-year letter winner and Reicks a one-year letter winner. Last season the Saints finished fifth in the conference tournament and have two All-Conference golfers. They also sent two golfers to the section finals. Meets for the Saints this season will be against Belle Plaine, Sibley East – Norwood Young America, Waseca, Blue Earth Area, Fairmont, United South Central, New Ulm and Saint James.

“Junior Anna Amos, a Section qualifier and Big South All-Conference player last year, shot a season low round of 86 last year while maintaining the best nine hole average on the team at 46.1,” Klubben said. “We look for Anna to play in our number one position and consistently shoot in the low 90s.” Coach Klubben was satisfied with last year’s overall performance by the team and has bigger dreams for this season. “We did not play very well

Photo by SPX Sports excited about the team that the Saints have this season and knows that hard work will get their where they need to be. “Our overall theme is year is work hard and get better each and every day,” Doose said. “Make our weaknesses strengths.” As a team, Doose says his players have an overall large, but achievable team goal they are hoping to reach by the end of their season. “We want to be in the top five in the Big South Conference,” Doose said. “Qualify as a team for round two of sections and send one or two individuals to the state tournament.” The team this year consists of freshmen Carter Doose and Kevin Pollock, sophomores Ethan Klaseus, Kendall Lusty, Blake Makela and Henry Olson, juniors Eric Carlson, Adam McCabe, Reid Reicks, Joe Wenner and Isaac Westphal and one lone senior, Luke Pehrson. Key returners for the season are Doose who was a section qualifier last year and named All-Conference, Carl-

The boy’s Section 2AA Tournament will start May 27 at the New Prague golf course in New Prague, Minn. Pat Klubben is the head coach for the Saints girl’s team and like coach Doose, has high hopes for her student athletes. “We hope to qualify the team for the State Tournament this year,” Klubben said. The girl’s team is a little smaller than the boys, with only six girls on the team. However, coach Klubben is excited that all of the girl’s already have plenty of experience. “We return our whole varsity team from last year,” Klubben said. “All six of them contributed to our success and I think that all six girls now that their spots are not guaranteed and they will need to work hard to gain their spot back or move up the ladder.” The six girls include freshman Ameilia Wernsing, sophomores Miranda Bresnahan and Kennady Conlon, junior Anna Amos and seniors Zoey Bartlett and Margaret Conlon.

in our BSC Tournament last year, so we would sure like to put on a better performance this year,” Klubben said. “We also move to a two-day section tournament format this year instead of a separate sub-section format. I look forward to the change and hopefully our girls acclimate themselves to the change.”

The girls play similar teams to the boys with the only difference being a meet against Mankato East at the end of May. The girl’s Section 2AA Tournament starts May 31 and if coach Klubben gets her wish, the girls will be headed to the State Tournament June 14-15.

Cardinals gear up for 2016 season KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer Spring sports are well underway in southern Minnesota. At Fairmont High School there are seven spring athletic teams. Baseball, softball, boy’s and girl’s track, boys’ and girls’ golf and boys’ tennis are all trying to play through this up-and-down spring weather. The baseball team, coached by Todd Sukalski, has been training all school year for this season. The Cardinals are led by quite a few seniors this season, as Carter Lloyd, Nathan Gillis, Jack Waletich, Clayton Maakestad, Tyler Tennyson, Kale Fritz and Mark Washa are all playing their last season in their red and white uniforms. Last season the baseball team achieved an overall record of 19-1which led the Big South Conference over Marshall, Windom Area, Pipestone Area, Waseca, St. James, Luverne, Redwood Valley, Worthington, St. Peter, Jackson County Central, Blue Earth Area and New Ulm. As a junior last year Tennyson was the leading home run hitter for the Cardinals, with

Photo by SPX Sports three total on the season. Tennyson accumulated 67 at bats with 32 hits, 28 RBIs and 18 runs on the season. Another big player for Fairmont that is coming back this season is Jack Waletich. Waletich played in all 20 games for the Cardinals with 54 at bats, 18 hits, 13 RBIs and led the team with 29 runs. Nathan Gillis will also be returning and he played in 17 games last season with 43 at bats, 14 hits, 8 runs and 11 RBIs.

There are several key players that are missing this year due to graduation. Spencer Chirpich played a huge role for the Cardinals as he played in all 19 games, had 59 at bats, 31 hits, scored 28 runs and had 18 RBIs. Another graduated player from past success is Ben Abel who played in 18 games in his senior season with 54 at bats, 18 hits, 14 runs and eight RBIs. The Cardinals had some impressive wins last season

over St. James 11-1, Martin County West 20-5 and 177, Mountain Lake Area 12-0, Worthington 10-2 and Blue Earth Area 11-0. The only loss for the 2015 season came at the hands of Marshall 5-0 in late April. During the section playoffs last year Fairmont was able to capture wins against Blue Earth Area 14-4, Luverne 5-4 and New London-Spicer 5-3 before losing to New Ulm 3-2 and Marshall 16-5. The two section tourna-

ment losses ended the Cardinals season. Fairmont’s last state tournament appearance was during the 2014 season after winning against Marshall in the Section 3AA Championship game. At the state tournament the Cardinals were very successful, making it all the way to the championship game at Target Field against St. Cloud Cathedral. The Cardinals would end up losing the game 5-4. This season the red and white are off to a good start playing against Worthington and St. Peter and winning both games for a 2-0 start. Next up for the Cardinals they will play quite a few road games, starting with Belle Plaine, Waseca, Blue Earth Area and New Richland. The Cardinals have not lost double digits games since 2008; perhaps they can keep the streak alive this season. The regular season ends May 17 with the Section 3AA Tournament starting soon after that. Another team looking for a great season at Fairmont is the softball team. Currently the girls hold a 2-0 record just like the baseball team, with early wins against Luverne 1615 and Worthington 8-6. The softball team plays in

Last season the Cardinals ended with an overall 14-10 record and 9-6 in the Big South Conference. They placed seventh overall in the Big South Conference below Jackson County Central, New Ulm, Marshall, St. Peter, Pipestone Area and St. James and above Waseca, Blue Earth Area, Redwood Valley, Luverne, Windom Area and Worthington. The Cardinals graduated one key player last season, pitcher Alyson Eversman. On the stats sheet last season the Cardinals hit three home runs, had 24 hits, 20 RBIs with a .469 batting average. In the 2015 section tournament the red and white won against St. James and Minneota/Canby/Lincoln HI but could not conquer New Ulm or Morris/Chokio-Alberta and were unable to make the State Tournament. Key players for the team this season are the three seniors Sarah Tschumperlin, Abby Fitzgerald and Tieryn Arens. The roster consists of two juniors Allison Johnston and Taylor Nuss. up this season as a stand out pitcher for the Red and White. In the Cardinals win against St. James April 15, Ehlert struck out 11 batters, allowing only one hit in nine innings. She also excelled against St. Peter with nine strikeouts. On the offensive end, Arens has been batting very well. In the Cardinals win against Luverne, Arens went 4-5 at bat with a two-run home run. This season the girls have played against Luverne, Worthington, St. Peter and St. James, beating all teams for a 4-0 record. They currently sit at first place in the Big South West above St. Peter, Marshall, New Ulm, Worthington, Waseca and Blue Earth Area. Future games for the Cardinals include two games against St. Peter, Waseca, Blue Earth Area and New Ulm and one against Jackson County Central and Marshall. The Section 2AA Tournament starts May 18 and continues all the way until June 2 if the Cardinals make it that far. The State Tournament is June 9-16 and will be held in North Mankato. The Cardinals have a new head coach this year, Haley Loerts and are assisted by Cory Hainy, Sarah Bonin and Tom Seifert. Boys and girl’s track and field are also in season at Fairmont High School right now. The boy’s team is very large this year with 48 students competing. There are

two eighth graders, 15 freshmen, 10 sophomores, 11 juniors and 10 seniors on the Cardinal roster. The boys are coached by Bob Bonk and assisted by Brad Johnson, Cheryl Hamp and Stew Murfield. Last season the boys heavily competed and were extremely successful with a 4619 record. The Cardinal boys

had some great meets and even had one athlete place at the State Class A Meet. Evan Ward, a senior last season, placed fifth with a time of 40.28 in the 300-meter hurdles at the state tournament. As a junior last season Josh Sunblad placed second in the 1600-meter run with a personal best time of 4:26 at the Section 2A meet. Sunblad also placed first in the 400-meter run and the 800-meter run at the Sub-Section meet. Another great athlete for the Cardinals last season was Levi Bulfer, as a sophomore last season he was the teams leading pole vaulter, placing in the top two multiple times. The 2015-2016 season for the boys has just started. Some teams that the Cardinals will face this season are Mankato East, St. Peter, St. Clair, Sleepy Eye Unified, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown H.S., USC, Blue Earth Area, Mountain Lake Area, Waseca, Luverne, Marshall and Mankato Loyola/Cleveland. Recently Bulfer has had some success. He placed first in the pole vault with 11 feet and first in the 200-meter run with a time of 24.5 at the Fairmont Tri-meet.

The girls have a few more athletes on the squad than the boys with 52 members. There are three seventh graders, three eighth graders, 14 freshmen, 18 sophomores, seven juniors and six seniors. The girls also dominated in the 2014-2015 season. Last season senior Sierra Schultz was a top athlete on the team. She placed third with a time of 15.52 in the high hurdles and 10th in the triple jump at the State A meet. Sarah Ostlie, also a senior last season, placed second in the 4x800 meter-run with a time of 9:45.96 at the Sec-

There are five boys; seventh grader Colby Grotte, freshman Tanner DeWare, sophomore Bryan Grotte and seniors Hunter Jorgensen and Trevor Iverson. On the varsity roster for the girls there is eighth grader Bergen Senf, sophomores Madison Pierce and Taylor Eicholz and lone senior Cassidy Krusemark. Sophomore Lizzy Subbert is a stand out competitor this season, placing first in the high jump, first in shuttle hurdles and fourth in 300 hurdles at the Blue Earth Area Invite. At the Fairmont Tri-meet, sophomore Ali Lardy showed her skills and received first place in the discus and first in shot put. “Our goal is to have fun and get better every day. The boys’ team goal is to qualify for day two of the section tournament,” Haugen said. “A few individuals have set the goal of qualifying for the state tournament.” The Cardinals graduated three key players from last season, including Sam Haven who now plays Bethany Lutheran, Joe Nordquist for North Iowa Area Community College and Emily Kim plays at Buena Vista University. Coach Haugen also has some specific hopes for his the girls this season. “Bergen Snef saw limited Varsity time last year, but will be counted on for a low score

each time out this year,” Haugen said. “Krusemark missed some time with injuries, but is back and determined to make a run at qualifying for the state tournament.” As far as the boy’s team is considered, Haugen knows the whole squad has the chance to make an impact. “Trevor Iverson and Hunter Jorgenson will be consistent contributors to the team score,” Haugen said. “But also sophomore Grotte and freshman DeWar look to provide the low scores for the team.” Last season the boy’s ended with some top moments. Some top moments from last season for the boys include senior Joe Nordquist’s score of 168 in two rounds at the Section 3AA meet and Sam Haven’s score of 83 at the Big South Conference meet and he was named to the All-Conference team. The girl’s team is coached by Brad Haugen. Emily Kim stood out at the Section 3AA Meet with a score of 176 after two rounds. Kim was also named All-Big South Conference and had a score of 83 at the BSC Meet. So far this season the girls lost to New Ulm 243-227, Marshall 467-353 and Worthington 463-417. The girls are also in last place in the BSC behind St. Peter, Blue Earth Area, Saint James and New Ulm. Upcoming meets for the girls are against Saint James, Worthington and Jackson County Central. The boys have lost at the hands of New Ulm 198-175 and Marshall 363-303. They are also at the bottom of the BSC standings behind New Ulm, Pipestone Area, Redwood Valley, Luverne, St. Peter, Blue Earth Area, Jackson County Central, Windom Area, Saint James, Marshall and Worthington. Upcoming meets for the boys are against Saint James, St. Peter and the New Ulm Invitational. The Section 2AA Tournament for the Cardinals will take place May 27 and June 6 at the New Prague golf course. The state tournament for golf is June 14-15. The last spring sport in session at Fairmont high school is boy’s tennis. The team has played just one dual so far this season but has many more too look forward to. Coached by Eric Johnson and assisted by Ellie Tonder and Hayley Fogelson, the

Cardinals tennis team is coming of a 7-0 Big South Conference record in the 2014-2015 year. Overall the Red and White posted an 11-6 score. With their 7-0 record the Cardinals led the BSC but were unable to make it to the state tournament. This year the varsity roster includes two seventh graders, Ameye Komaragiri and Thomas Klanderud, four eighth graders, Aaron Hendricks, Blake Haugen, Evan Carlson and Tyrell Zieske, two freshman, Eric Head and Stuart Smick, four sophomores, Ben Hernes, Carter Klanderud, Conner Madsen and Kellen Rodriguez, four juniors, Andy Hagen, Shawn Busche, Tony Josephy and Tyler Head and three seniors, Austin Becker, Eli Green and Jake Kallenbach. The first and only dual so far this season was against Mankato East/Loyola, which they lost 4-3. The rest of the Cardinal season will include duals against Stewartville, Waseca, Faribault, Saint James, Worthington, Saint James, New Ulm, Albert Lea, St. Peter, Chanhassen, Austin High School, Redwood Valley, Blue Earth Area, Luverne and then the Big South Conference Tournament. Last year seniors Ryan Busche and Mitch Anderson really excelled in the doubles

department. The duo defeated a tough Saint James team 6-4 and 6-0 for a big 5-2 Cardinal win in the section tournament. The Cardinals also lose Alban Loyer and Sterlin Johnson, two important doubles players. Some big wins from the previous season include Alban Loyer and Sterlin Johnson defeated Saint James in the BSC Championship 4-3. Junior Andy Hagen performed very well in an important singles match against Luverne and again against Pipestone. Hagen was ranked 4th in singles as a sophomore, this year expect him to be higher. Hagen was also doubles partner with junior Kallenbach; the duo won a big upset match against St. Peter last season. The current BSC standings have Luverne in first place followed by Saint James, New Ulm Eagles, Blue Earth Area, Fairmont, Pipestone Area, St. Peter and Waseca. These standings will most definitely change as more duals and matches are played throughout the season for the Cardinals. The Section 1A Tournament will take place May 23 and May 25-27. If they Cardinals are able to conquer the season and make it to the state tournament, it will take place June 10-17.

Maple River ready for baseball, softball and golf

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer Maple River high school athletes are busy this spring. The baseball, softball, boy’s and girl’s track and field and boy’s and girl’s golf participants are all busy competing right now. The boy’s baseball team started off the 2015-2016 season with a tough 7-1 loss to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown. However, the loss must have sparked something in the Eagles as they have won their last three games. The boys swept New RichlandH-E-G High School 6-0, then beat Blooming Prairie twice 6-1 and 7-2. The Eagles are coached by Jeff Cole this season and assisted by Cory Roeker, Dusty Drager and Jay Byram. Maple River is part of the Gopher Conference and currently sits third in the standings behind Faribault Academies and United South Central but above W-E-M, Randolph, Medford, New Richland-H-E-G and Blooming Prairie. Last season the Eagle baseball team struggled, ending the season with a 5-14 record and placing seventh in the Gopher year-end standings. The team lost their first six games last season before finally winning against St. Clair and United South Central. The roster consisted of many seniors and juniors and one lone sophomore. The seniors included Derek Moore, Grant Sonnek, Eli Redfield, Josh Moore and JD Hicks. In the section playoffs last year the Eagles only played one game and lost 6-4 to Albert Lea and were then out of the tournament. They also lost in the first round the year before that 9-1 to St. Peter. While the Eagles lost many seniors they still have experienced players that can step up this season. Including Jack Prosser, Alec Blair. Juniors make up a lot of the team again; Nick Shubert, Jared Moore, Adam Dickey, Chandler See, Jeff Lewis, Caleb Swehla and Logan Quiram. Sophomores include Lincoln Ardnt, Ethan Sindelir, Nathan Moore, Sam Bennett and Gavin Doering. Opponents for the Eagles this season are Medford, United South Central, Martin County West, St. Claire, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown,

Saint James Area, Bethlehem Academy, St. Peter, New Richland-H-E-G, Janesville Waldorf Pemberton, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, Mankato Loyola and Jackson County Central. With their 3-1 record the Eagles are currently leading the Gopher standings, a big accomplishment from last season. Behind Maple River are United South Central, Water ville-Ellysian-Morristown, Bethlehem Academy, Medford, New Richland and Blooming Prairie. The Section 2AA Tournament will begin May 23 for the Eagles and if they make it, the championship game is June 9. The State Tournament will be June 16-17 at Target Field. For the Eagle girls, softball is also in session. The softball team is off to an early 1-1 start to their season. They lost 1211 to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown in early April but won against Faribault Academies 1-0. The girls are coached by Laura Olson. Alissa Groskreutz and Devin Drager assist Olson. The team consists of freshmen Abby Simon, Merrit Stoltzman and Haley Russ, sophomores Bridgette Kollos, Destinyi Geishardt, Jozie Doering, Caitlynn Davis, Sydney Trio, Katelyn Langworthy, Hannah Osdoba, Laci Dulas and Payton Berkner, juniors Maddie Rennpferd and Kelsey Shore, and lone senior Sarah Fay. Last season the Eagles had an overall 11-3 record but the Gopher Conference was tough. Medelia/Truman took first in the conference followed by Lake Crystal – Wellcome Memorial, Cleveland and Martin County West. Below the Eagles last year was Nicollet High School, Le Center, St. Clair, Martin Luther/ Granada/Huntley and Alden/ Conger. Huge wins for the Eagles last season were 10-0 against Medford, 14-1 against Blooming Prairie, 10-4 against TriCity United, 15-5 against Blue Earth Area, 15-2 against St. James, 16-6 against St James and 11-1 against United South Central. In their 14 regular season games the Eagles earned double-digit runs in eight of the games. In the section tournament last year the Eagles won right away against Waseca 8-4 and again against Tri-City United 7-0. However, their chance at a section title and the State Tournament was cut short when they fell to St. Peter 4-3 and Norwood Young America 7-1.

The Maple River girls have had a lot of success in the section playoffs. In 2012 they won the tournament and gone onto the State Tournament where they made it to the Consolation Championship. They also made the tournament in 2012. In total, the Eagles have made it to the Section 2AA State Tournament 13 times, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2013. They have won the state title three times, 1992, 1996 and 2001 making them one of the most successful teams their conference has ever seen. The upcoming schedule for the Eagles looks like this: Rochester Lourdes, Kasson-Mantorville, Mankato East Tournament, Medford, Blooming Prairie, Saint James Area, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, Tri-City United, Richland-H-E-G, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, United South Central, Zumbrota-Mazeppa and New Richland-H-E-G. The Section 2AA Tournament will start May 18 and go to May 24, May 26, May 28, May 31 and June 2. The tournament will be at Caswell Park in North Mankato. If the Eagles can reach their 14th State Tournament it will be June 9-10 at Caswell Park in North Mankato as well. The last sports in session right now at Maple River High

School are boy and girl’s golf. Joel Hoppe is the head coach for both teams. There are nine boys on the squad this season including five freshman, Andrew Hoppe, Dylon Mathison, Mason Sohre, Matt Proehl and Wyatt Bump and four seniors, Brandon Sohre, Bryan Garlow, Dylan Blakesly and Kris Sorenson. Coach Hoppe has a lot of experience with the boy’s squad as they four seniors; Shore, Garlow, Blakesly and Sorenson have all been on the varsity team for four years. Coach Jay Winters also assists the boys and girls. The team is participating in three big tournaments this season. The first is against Bethlehem Academy at Maple River high school. Next they will take on Truman – GHEC – Martin Luther at Granada-Huntley-East Chain high school and the last big meet will be against St. Clair and Loyola at St. Clair high school on May 20. Other schools in the Valley Conference with Maple River are Lake Crystal – Wellcome Memorial, Martin County West, Truman/GHEC/Martin Luther, Madelia, and St. Clair –Loyola, Alden – Conger and Janesville – Waldorf – Pemberton. The Section 2AA Tournament for the boys is May 27 and June 6 at the New Prague golf course in New Prague, Minnesota. If the

boys do well they can make it to the State Tournament June 14-15 at Sand Creek in Jordan, Minnesota. On the girls side coach Hoppe has five athletes competing. There is one-eighth grader, Kate Larson, two sophomores in Samantha Kunkel and Taylor Schnoor and two juniors in Ashlley Hawker and Jordan Willis and no seniors on the Eagles squad. Hawker and Willis both saw individual success in the 2014-2015 season placing second and third at several meets. Coach Hoppe can hope to see similar things from those two this year as well has have the lone eighth grader Larson step up and put up some low scores. The girls are also only competing in three meets this season. First they will take on Truman/GHEC/Martin Luther April 19, then Bethlehem Academy April 28 at Maple River and finally St. Clair –Loyola at St. Clair high school May 20. Last season neither the boys nor the girls made it far in the Section 2AA Tournament and neither made it to the State Tournament. The Eagles finished in the bottom of the Valley Conference only above Alden – Conger. The girls will participate in the Section 2AA Tournament starting May 31 at the New Prague golf course as well.

J-W-P Bulldogs look to find success in 2016

COREY YUMAN Staff Writer It is track and field time once again folks, and the boys and girls of the Janesv ille -Wal d o r f- Pe m b e r to n High School team are ready to get started on the year. The team is going to be full of youth so it will be up to a lot of young talent to try to get the job done. “We’ve had a decline in participation over the years, so this year it is great to see so many young students giving it a try. Our numbers at the varsity level are still very low, but the junior high team is really big this year,” explained head coach Eric Kehoe. As a team they will be looking to build their teamwork through encouragement and motivating of others on the team, even if they are just watching the event as a spectator.

“Building a better sense of team cohesiveness and pride in the sport are my main goals for the year,” said coach Kehoe. “We are also stressing this year to properly be preparing for each event both mentally

and physically. Cooling down and stretching afterwards as well to better prepare for the next competition. We want all of the athletes to be aware of how they are performing, and keeping track of how that improves throughout the sea-

son,” said Kehoe. Coach Kehoe noted that all of his seniors Ryan Eustice, Trevor West, Tuckor Anderson, Gabbie Hagen, Hannah Olson are doing a great job and cited them as athletes to watch for.

It isn’t just the seniors impressing though as Coach Kehoe noted, “Sophomore Kaden Cameron is off to a great start in the distance races, already winning both the 1600 and 800 so far this year. Emma Johnson, a 7th grader, has already shown she can achieve great times in anything from a 400 to 1600 m run, again with a few firsts under her belt.” When asked if there was anyone on the schedule that the team was looking forward to competing against Coach Kehoe didn’t have anyone in particular that stood out as a team. “I know each of my top athletes, are top athletes because they know who their competition is in each of their respective events,” Coach Kehoe went on to say. “Keeping tabs on them is one of the main drivers for their improvement.” The boys of the Janesv ille -Wal d o r f- Pe m b e r to n Bulldog High School baseball team are back in action

JWP continued from B3 “We are also stressing this year to properly be preparing for each event both mentally and physically. Cooling down and stretching afterwards as well to better prepare for the next competition. We want all of the athletes to be aware of how they are performing, and keeping track of how that improves throughout the season,” said Kehoe. and ready to hit the field this spring. With the season fully underway, high school baseball fans can get excited once more because the time is upon us. They are coming off of a year that saw them go 14-6 with a ranking of 24 and a score of 53.2 in the QRF Rankings. Head coach Ryan Luedtke will be heading the charge along with his assistant coaches Mike Skinner and Scott Kaminski. They will be in charge of a relatively small team of players with senior outfielder Connor Oldenburg, second baseman Walker Miller, shortstop Keegan Priebe, and outfielder Joey Stockman. In addition to the five seniors the Bulldogs are bringing in, there will be five juniors along with one freshman and one sophomore to round out the squad. With the season currently underway the Bulldogs are currently holding on to a 1-3 record for this season. They opened up this year playing a home game against the Hayfield Vikings. The Bulldogs weren’t able to get past the Vikings though and would lose the game 10-4. The fol-

lowing week would be a better performance, however, they would still fall shy of victory. Playing against Mankato Loyola they would lose 5-1. The first win of the season wouldn’t take long to get to and in their game against the United South Central Rebels

Photos by SPX Sports the Bulldogs would figure out how to get themselves into the win column. It was a tightly contested game but when the final inning was played the Bulldogs would end up beating the Rebels 2-1. Speaking of tightly contested games, the following week the Bulldogs were in another affair like that, this time with a high scoring affair to boot. Playing against the Lake Crystal-Wellcome

Memorial Knights the two teams battled back and forth through out each inning of play. While the Bulldogs fought the good fight, they were not able to secure a victory and walked away losing the game 10-9. If there is anything that

the game against the Knights showed it is that this team has a lot of firepower that can go off when they want it to. While it is still early in the season, if this young team is able to showcase their offensive prowess the way they did it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see this ship righted and put on a better course. The girls of the Janesv ille -Wal d o r f- Pe m b e r to n Bulldogs are ready to get their selves back onto the diamond this spring because softball is back! It’s a new year and there are new and returning faces but the girls are going to try to improve on a 2014-15 season that saw them finish with a record of 7-11 and placed 102 with a score of 26.5 in the QRF rankings. If they are going to attempt to improve on last year, they will have to do it under the guidance of head coach Lenny Kroll along with assistants Jace Emory, Layce Johnson, and Samantha Cunningham. The team is isn’t too heavy on the senior movement as the teams veteran leadership will consist of infielder Kaley Anderson, Jacey Anderson, outfielder Mikaela Wehking, and infielder Allison Schuch. Along with the batch of seniors the team will be made up largely of a group of tenth and eleventh graders, with one eighth grader on the team learning the ropes. “I am having a blast coaching this season and I believe that we will improve on the 7 wins we had last year!” said Kroll. With the season underway they are already looking to try and improve on that seven wins but are still sitting below

.500 in the win’s percentage. The girls opened up this year playing against the Medford Tigers but suffered a devastating loss at their hands. Medford came out and handled business throughout the game and never looked back as they trounced on the Bulldogs 14-4. Things didn’t look a whole lot better for the girls the next week, but this time they were able to keep the opposing team from firing up like the Tigers did. In their game against the Nicollet Raiders

the girls fought hard but just couldn’t get over. In a closely contested game it was the Raiders that were able to walk away with a victory on their home turf beating the Bulldogs 6-4. Like all great teams though, the girls didn’t let the losses get them down. It wouldn’t take them long to bounce back and get their first win of the season as the very next week they were able to accomplish that. Playing against the United South Central Rebels the Bulldogs were able to snatch a victory from them. It was a high scoring affair with both teams getting in a lot offense but it was the Bulldogs that were able to outlast the other team and walked away with a 9-6 victory over the Rebels. There is plenty of time left in the season, and a whole lot more softball to be played. The girls have shown that they can battle with teams, and they have the firepower to put up runs. On a team that is ripe with young talent, it will be up to the coaches and experienced players to help develop the young players on their way to hopefully reaching their goal of improving upon their record from last season.

The girl’s track team participates in the South Central Conference with Blue Earth Area and Saint James Area. Like the boy’s team the girl’s Section 2AA Tournament is May 26 and state is June 1011. The last sport that is active right now for the St. Peter Saints in boy’s tennis. Aaron Rothenberger is the head coach for the boys this season and is assisted by Mark Meier. The team has jumped out to a good start this season with a current record of 3-0. The Saints won 6-1 against Mankato West, 5-2 against Rochester Lourdes and 7-0 against Saint James. Unlike many other St. Peter teams, the tennis teams gets to play a variety of schools this season including Mound Westonka, Hibbing Hutchinson, Stewartville, Cotter, Mankato East/Loyola and Redwood Valley. They will also face other Big South teams like New Ulm, Blue Earth Area, Fairmont, Waseca and Saint James. The Saints have been working hard in the off-season and coach Rothenberger knows they are ready to heavily compete. “We want to be first in Section 1A and we want to win the Big South Conference title,” Rothenberger said. “Our overall theme is year is STP.

Something to prove.” The competitors this year for the Saints are lone freshman Bailey More, sophomores Drew Elofson, Rafat Solaiman and Will Miller, lone junior Earl Foster and seniors Aaron Leeb, Abdi Omar, Avery Bachman, Bradyn Klubben Ezkeiel Kyoore, Joe Siebels, Joseph More, Kaelan Weiss, Tobias Mittermayer and Zeke Haugen. Coach Rothenberger said the boys are most excited for the Section 1A Tournament and the Art Nelson (Pine City)

Tournament. The boys made it to the State Tournament last season where they won the consolation championship. Before the 2015 appearance the boys made it twice before, once in 2008 and 2011. The team has a lot of experience. Last season five players had more than 20 wins. Avery Bachman went 28-6; Zeke Haugen had a 28-7 record, Joey More with 27-7, Aaron Leeb at 20-9, Rafat Solaiman 27-4 and Drew Elofson with 21-8. Maple River track and field poised for success

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer Boy’s and Girl’s track and field are well on their way to success this season and they have many team goals on their mind. Head coach Jeff Soma is very proud of how hard his team worked in the off-season and he knows that they are ready for a great season. “The Eagles always shoot for the conference championship,” Soma said. “Both the boys and girls won the conference in 2014 and both boys and girls were runner up in 2015. We have a little more depth in field events this year and hope to finish on top of the conference this year again.” As a coach, Soma has 20 years under his belt. Head assistant coach Norm Preston has 30+ years. Other assistant coaches are: Brian Schoneck has 3 years, Ashley Hawker has 3 years, Jacob Bastyr one year, Jeremy Walters five years and Christine Klecker one year. Soma knows he is lucky to have such experience and talented assistants. “Maple River has the best assistant coaches in the conference,” Soma said. Each of them spends quality time in practice with each of their student athletes. The coaches will sometimes plan op-

tional practices on Saturdays for those who want to work on specific skills and strength training.” This year’s captains for the Eagles are Prince Bade, Paul Schoneck and Andrew Albrecht for the boys and Madi Jones and Gabriela Passmore for the girls. All captains are seniors this season. Other seniors on the squad include Kira Wolf, Noah Greenfield, Will Keller, Trevor Lemmon, Mason Moske and Nick Steinhaus. The entire team is very large for the Eagles with 57 boy athletes and 35 girl athletes for a total of 92. Because it’s so early in the season the team has only competed twice with good

Photo by SPX Sports results, but coach Soma knows that there is always room for improvement. “It’s early but I think we should have depth in every event. We are more balanced this year with sprinters and distance runners,” Soma said. “We have more experience in field event athletes this year too. Most teams can put a competitive athlete in each event. It sometimes comes down to who your second or third athlete is and how they does against other teams’ second and third athlete in that event.” The Blue Earth invite was the Eagle’s first big meet and Soma said it helped the team see how they can match up to other teams in their conference and how likely a post-season run is. Last year for the girl’s team Jones excelled in the high jump and triple jump and Wolf was dominant in the 100-meter run, 200-meter run and the long jump. Passmore was their best distance runner in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter and Soma will expect bigs things from here this year as well. On the boy side Lemmon is a distance runner to look at in the 800-meter, Bade does a little bit of everything in the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter and the long jump and Albrecht excels in the 110-meter Hurdles, 4x100-meter relay and the triple jump. The Section 2A Tournament is May 26 for the Eagles and if they compete well they will go onto the State Tournament June 10-11 at Hamline University in St. Paul.

“The Eagles always shoot for the conference championship,” Soma said. “Both the boys and girls won the conference in 2014 and both boys and girls were runner up in 2015. We have a little more depth in field events this year and hope to finish on top of the conference this year again.”

Mankato East track and field ready to run

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The Mankato East boys and girls track and field teams are also currently competing. Jon Diercks is the head coach for the boy’s team. This Cougar boy’s track and field team is one of the most successful high school teams in southern Minnesota in the past decade. The Cougar boys have qualified for state 13 of the past 16 years. They have also finished with five runner-up awards and four state champions. This past year the Cougars were awarded the State True Team title. This is an award based on overall team depth and not just top finishers in competitions. Coach Diercks is well aware that he has a talented team, but also knows there is always room for improvement. “We do not have an overall theme for our year,” Diercks said. “But our goals include winning the Big Nine Conference meet as well as repeating as AA True Team State Champions. The boy’s team has many veteran athletes that can show their experience and leadership skills to the younger ath-

The Cougars have one of the largest track and field teams in the state with over 90 participants. Other schools that the boy’s compete against include Albert Lea, Austin, Rochester Century, Faribault, Mankato West, Northfield/ ARTech, Owatonna, Red Wing, Rochester John Marshall, Rochester Mayo and Winona. Coach Diercks and the boys are excited for several different meets this season. “We are looking forward to the Cougar Relays, Hamline Elite Meet as well as True Team and the Conference Meet,” Diercks said. “Also we are looking forward to the post season and placing individuals and relays at the meet.” The Section 2AA Tournament for the boys will be June 1 and June 3 at Gustavus. If they are able to make it to state again, the Cougars will be at Hamline University June 10-11. The girl’s track and field team is coached by Joy Visto and assisted by Billy Visto, Dusty Julius, Eric Anenson, Fred Berg, Josh Engel, Mary Nelson, Piper Timmerman and Jessie Fowler. Like the boys team, the girl’s have dozens of athletes participating, with 78 to be exact. The senior leaders on the squad this season are Amal Hussein, Andrea Nett, Anna Laumann, Danielle Gleason, Emily Altenburg, Hannah Shank, Leah Shields,

Samantha Erickson, Sidney Colbrunn, Sydney Writz and Warda Jama. In recent years the Cougar girls have had some success at the section and state level. In 2013 they were named the Section 2AA True Team Champs and received seventh place for True Team at the State Tournament. The girls also compete

against the same teams as the Cougar boys in the Big Nine Conference. A few big meets for the girls this year are the Hamline Elite Meet, the Cougar Relays, True Team State and the Big Nine Conference tournament. The Section 2AA Tournament for the Cougar girls is June 1 and 3 at Gustavus.

Mankato East gears up for spring sports

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The Cougar boy’s golf team is coached by Nathan Fuller and assisted by Tony Ball. On the squad this year is one freshman Carson Haley, three juniors, in Cole Theobald, Eric Eckheart and Tyler Friedrichs and five seniors: Carter Haley, Daniel Shevtsov, Jon Bundy, Judd Schulz and Nicholas Piowlski. Fuller says he has a pretty new team this year but is confident they can do well if they practice hard and concentrate. The Cougar team motto for the year is, “All decisions are made in the Think Box, once you set out of that box quit thinking and play. Decide, commit and swing. It’s as simple as that.” This season the boys have meets against Prior Lake, Northfield, Marshall, Owatonna, Holy Family Catholic, Albert Lea, Eden Prairie,

Photo by SPX Sports Owatonna, Red Wing, Rochester John Marshall, Rochester Mayo and Winona/Cotter. The Section 2AAA Tournament for the boys is starts June 1 and goes until June 6. If the boys do well at sections, they can make it to the State Tournament June 14-15.

Rochester John Marshall, Edina, Rochester Mayo, Mankato East Invitational, Red Wing and the Big Nine Conference. Teams competing in the same conference as the Cougars include Albert Lea, Austin, Rochester Century, Faribault, Mankato West,

For the girl’s golf team, there are many veterans on the squad who are looking to do great things this year. Head coach Aaron Anderson is proud of what his girls are doing ad hopes the veterans can step up and help the younger players.

“We have four returning letter winners from last season,” Anderson said. “Alexis Just and Kenzie Page are seniors and Camryn Steinberg and Shoshana Bruner are sophomores.” There are several other girls who Anderson knows will see varsity action this season besides the four veterans. They are sophomores Annie Miles, Kate Casio, Olivia Choun and Kelsey Robinson, along with eighth grader Tatum Jahnke. Other girls listed on the varsity roster are Hailey Zimmerli, Brittany Dodge, Libby Alders, Sydney Haroldson and Kalli Steinberg. The Cougars have 19 tournaments this season. They have already played Northfield, Marshall, Worthington and Owatonna. They lost to Northfield and Marshall, won against Worthington and tied Owatonna for a current record of 1-2-1. Some major tournaments for the Cougars this season are the Hutch Invite, the Mankato Girls Invitational and the Big Nine Conference. “We are really looking forward to nice weather this season,” Anderson said. “Along with the opportunity to make many improvements through out the season.” The girls play the same teams as the Cougar boys with the exception of Winona/Cotter. The Section 2AAA Tournament for the girls is June 1 and if they make it to the state tournament that will be June 14-15. The Cougars boy’s tennis team are working hard to build their team back up after

graduating four of their top five players from last season. However, head Coach Paul Williams is confident that his team has worked hard to overcome the losses. “We lost five players, four of them from the top of their lineup, so our theme this year is to overcome the loss of these players by getting the most out of the returners and new players,” Williams said. “I will do my best to put them in a position to win.”

As far as season goals for the Cougars, Williams said it’s pretty simple for all of his players. “My only goal for any of my players is to give their best effort every practice and every match,” Williams said. The key returners for the Cougars this season are Brandon Sloniker, Liban Hassan, Josh Ouyang, Tyler Homich, Noah Homich and Zach Riehl. There are also a few new players that Williams is looking forward to coaching. Mark Williams has joined the varsity team as a seventh grader and Ty Wrage is a transfer senior from Wisconsin. A big accomplishment that Williams wants to point out is his team’s continued success in academics. “I think I am most impressed with the academic awards my players have received over the years,” Williams said. “I haven’t looked at GPA’s for this year yet but I expect to get our fifth straight Coaches Association Gold Award for team GPA this year.” The Cougars have a very large team this year with 23 total athletes. The youngest on the team include seventh graders Jesse Possin, John Sadaka, Riley Madsen, Tom Bibbee and Trenton Heinze. Eighth graders are Anthony

MANKATO EAST continued from B8 ““We lost five players, four of them from the top of their lineup, so our theme this year is to overcome the loss of these players by getting the most out of the returners and new players,” Williams said. “I will do my best to put them in a position to win.” Hernandez, Hunter Baumann, Matthew Wedzina, Noah Homich, Ryan Swanson and William Schwamberger. There is one lone freshman on the varsity squad this season and that is John Braswell. The sophomores consist of Ahn Enright, Collin Berg and Elijah Bruner. James Trefry is a junior aong with Riehl and Ouyang. Finally, the three experienced seniors are Sloniker, Hassan and Wrage. The boys play in the Big Nine Conference like the other sports but have several non-conference duals to look forward to. Towards the end of the regular season the Cougars will face Austin, New Prague, St. Peter, Hill-Murray School, Chaska and Simley. “We are most looking forward to hosting our Quadrangler with Chaska, Simley and Hill Murray on April 30,” Williams said. “We also look forward to the Big Nine Conference tournament and the Section 2AA tournament.” Assistant coaches for the Cougars include Earle Peters, Evan Johnson, Kelly Lechowski and Sarah McCann. The Section 2AA Tournament for the Cougars starts May 27, continues on May 28 and ends May 31. All matches will be played at Gustavus. The State Tournament will be

June 7-10. The Cougar’s boy’s and girl’s lacrosse team co-op with Mankato West High School and Mankato Loyola. The girls have been having a busy season so far accord-

Photos by SPX Sports ing to head coach Sean Sletten. “This is our first season in the MSHSL,” Sletten said. “Our main theme will be to continue improving from game to game. We will be playing teams that are more experienced than we are, so there will certainly be plenty

of learning experiences as the season plays on. We also need to make sure that we are continuing to have fun.” There are several goals that coach Sletten wants all of his players to keep in mind as

they head into practice and games. “Our regular season goals are to continue improving from game to game and finish with a record above .500,” Sletten said. “Of course every year the ultimate goal is to win the section and make it to the state tournament, but we realize that will take a tremendous amount of work and determination to make it that far.” The top returning players for the team include senior Annie Coughlan, junior Ireland Olson, sophomore Hannah Helms, junior Lauren Colway and sophomore Shelby Lund. On the defensive side Sletten says to look for big plays from senior Annie Kunst, junior Eliza Stougaard, junior Sydney Morales and sophomore Elizabeth Peller. The goalie for the team this season is also a returner, sophomore Jordan Romnes. There are also a few players that will be new to the East/West/Loyola squad this year. “We have some talented players that are picking up a lacrosse stick for the very first time and will contribute to the varsity roster,” Sletten said. “These players include freshmen Alexis Peterson, Claire Johnson, Alexis Kopischke, Kylie Rome and Malia Neumann.” The main teams that East/ West/Loyola will face this season are Rochester Mayo, Rochester John Marshall/ Lourdes and Owatonna. “All of the games that we

will be playing will be challenging,” Sletten said. “But the greatest challenge that we will be facing all season will most likely be Owatonna. Owatonna has been a perennial powerhouse in girl’s lacrosse across southern Minnesota and they will certainly be a tall task when we face them.”

The only game the girls have played this season so far has been against Rochester Century, where they lost 9-7. “The girls played a fantastic first game and left everything they had on the field,” Sletten said. “So even though it’s hard to lose a game I couldn’t be happier with the effort that the girls put forth.” The girls still have a long season ahead but the Section 1 Tournament begins May 31. If they do well, the State Tournament is June 14-18 in Minnetonka and Chanhassen. Jamie Kunst is the head coach of the boy’s Mankato East lacrosse team. Curtis Doell, Danny Heath, Zach Yozamp, Kyle Hohman, Tyler Farr and Nick Bryant help Kunst coach the team of 23 athletes. The team has three freshman, Koby Gagnon, Ben Stevens and Noah Sandland, two sophomores, Joshua Etter and Zach Zellmer, six juniors, Hunter Snell, Colton Corcoran, Grant Guyer, Scanlan Friend, Tyler Lageson, Cody Olson and William Robinson and 10 seniors, Devin Harding, Ben Radloff, Jackson Thate, Chase Kunst, Ross Miltimore, Spencer Good, Terrel Dawkins, David Miltimore, Jude Gilmore, and Noah Lacina.

Mankato East baseball and softball 2016 preview

KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer Cory Smith is in his third season as head coach for the Cougars baseball team. Under Smith, the Cougars have gone 25-17 in the past two seasons, and this year they are off to a good start at 3-3. Micah Degner, Nate Hawker and Travis Miller assist Smith. The boys started off the season with a win against Holy Family Catholic 3-1 and then lost their next three to Mankato West 10-8, Northfield 5-2 and Austin 10-6. They have made a comeback though recently with two wins against Waseca 6-1 and Faribault 10-0 to reach their 3-3 overall record. Mankato East is a part of the Big Nine Conference along with Mankato West, Northfield, Red Wing, Rochester John Marshall, Albert Lea, Winona, Austin, Faribault, Rochester Mayo, Owatonna, Mankato East and Rochester Century. Last season the Cougars went 9-11 and placed 11 out of the 12 teams in the Big Nine Conference only above Faribault. Last season the big players for the Cougars were Brady DesLauriers who played 18

games with 57 at bats, 27 hits, 15 runs and 11 RBIs, Ryan Carlsten with 50 at bats, 20 hits, 18 runs, 10 RBIs in 18 games played, Luke Makovsky with 18 games played, 49 at bats, 14 hits, 12 runs and 11 RBIs, Joe Billiar with 17 games played, 51 at bats, 16 hits, 11 runs and a teamhigh 19 RBIs and finally Nick Brink with 49 at bats, 12 hits, four runs, and nine RBIs in 18 games. The good news for the Cougars is that DesLauriers

and Makovsky are both returning this season with plenty of experience and leadership to help the team through the season. Other Cougar players this year include freshmen Jackson Keller, Jake Prybylla, Ryan Kuechle and Jack Clifford, no sophomores, juniors Alex Turner, Nathan Kleist, Alec Batson, Eric Geisthardt, Makovsky and Tanner Stengel and seniors Dylan Findlay, Travis Stockman, DesLauriers, Dylan Hayenga, Sam Ahrens, Adam Moret and Jay Beckman. Findlay, Stockman, Turner, Hayenga, Beckman, Moret, Stengel and Keller all saw some varsity playing time last season. In the section playoffs last year the Cougars played against Shakopee in their opening game at Round Lake Stadium in Eden Prairie and lost 4-0, putting them out of the tournament and ending their hopes for a section championship or state tournament run. This season Makovsky has been very successful at the plate for the Cougars with 15 at bats, six hits, eight runs and eight RBIs. Ahrens has also stepped up with eight hits and six RBIs for the team. Up next the Cougars will face Owatonna in a double header April 22 and then move on to Rochester Mayo and Red Wing to close out April. Their last regular season game is against Winona May 21. The Section 2AAA Tournament will start May 26 and go until June 8. If the Cougars win the section playoffs, the

State Tournament starts June 16. Softball season is also underway at Mankato East High School. Head coach Joe Madson and the Cougar girls are off to a great start this year with an overall record of 5-1. Chuck Helling, Paul Sorenson, Tom Yess, Kirstin Prunty and Laura Vanderhoff assist Madson on the field and in the dugout. The girls have lost only to Mankato West 0-4, but have won their last four games against Northfield 24-2, Owatonna 5-3, Owatonna 9-7 and Faribault 9-3. The Cougars currently sit at the second place spot in the Big Nine Conference only behind undefeated Mankato West and above Winona, Rochester Century, Rochester John Marshall, Northfield, Faribault, Owatonna, Rochester Mayo, Red Wing, Albert Lea and Austin. Coach Madson is proud of the Cougars work ethic and how far they’ve come in the off-season. They have several

goals and a good theme for their team this year. “Our theme for the year is Heart Not Hype,” Madson said. “We want to win the Big Nine Conference and win the Section 2AAA Tournament.” The returners for the squad this season are sophomore shortstop Lily Andrego, freshman Madisyn Kozitza, junior pitcher Morgan WolfeKeim, junior catcher Torey Richards and senior second baseman Kayla Fingreson. The captains for the Cougars this year are Fingreson, Richards and Wolfe-Keim. Last season the Cougars posted a 13-5 record and finished third in the Big Nine behind Mankato West and Rochester Mayo. In the section playoffs, the girls prevailed against Willmar 11-1 and Minnetonka 4-3, but could not get past Shakopee 4-3 or Prior Lake 7-5. The two section losses ended their run for the section championship and state bid. The last time the Cougars made it to the State Tournament was in 2012 when they were the Section 2AAA Champions. At the State Tournament that year they won against Bloomington Jefferson before losing to Stillwater and Orono. The Cougars also made it to state in 2011 but lost to Hermantown early on. This year Richards, who was a 2nd Team All-State performer last season as a sophomore, leads the team for Madson. Madson says the team is exciting for the whole season and has worked really hard, but has a few specific games they are looking forward to. “We host our own tournament April 22-23 at Caswell Park,” Madson said. “Also, our games against West are always fun. We also have non-conference games against New Prague and Shakopee that will be great tests for us.”
