Congratulations Mankato West Football! The Mankato West football team earned their fourth state football title in school history after defeating Simley 42-19. JOEY DENTON Sports Editor The Mankato West football team was cruising through their regular season schedule, outscoring their opponents 417-83 in their first seven games of the 2014 season, but they hit a hiccup right before playoff football was about to start. Rochester John Marshall, who finished their season 5-5, came to Mankato and ruined the perfect season with a 21-19 upset win. A lot of teams would have been shocked and have taken that shock with them into the postseason, but that's not what championship teams do. They collect themselves and get back to what they do best, and that is what the 2014 Mankato West football team did. The squad got past a scary close game in their first game of postseason with a 38-35 win over Chanhassen, but then they got to
their whoopin' ways with a 4221 victory over Northfield and a 48-0 win over Bloomington Jefferson. After a close encounter with St. Michael-Albertville, winning 26-21, the Scarlets had one team left to go-- Simley. The Scarlets got out to a 21-13 lead with just 2:35 left in the half, Simley moved down the field and was knocking on the door, deep inside West territory. The Scarlets pull out the huge defensive stand to end the half, and that set the tone for a 21-6 second half run by the Scarlets. The Scarlets have been led offensivel by senior quarterback Ryan Schlichte. His great athleticism and big arm will be great assests for the MSU Mavericks for years to come. Congratulations Scarlets on an amazing 2014 season! twinscities.com Mankato West had 422 yards of offense with 230 of those yards coming from the running game. Quarterback Ryan Schlichte completed 17 of his 25 attempts for 192 yards and three total touchdowns.

SLEEPY EYE INDIANS Boys' Basketball looks to be competitive in 2014-15. DENZELL CASTRO-OATS Staff Writer

The Sleepy Eye boys' basketball team are coming off a season that ended 8-17 last year. The Sleepy Eye Indians, led by head coach Shane Laffen, played a very competitive season last year which ended in a loss to the #1 team ACGC in the second round of sections. Losing six seniors from last year’s team to graduation will be a tough make up for the Indians. “Having lost a lot of experience and senior leadership from last year’s team, we will need to rely on a total team effort this season,” Laffen said. The team is comprised of only three seniors who coach Laffen looks to lead the team. “Seniors Rueben Astorga, Matt Miller and Triston Todd all have had varsity experience and knows what is takes for this team to win. I will look to them to lead the team in that aspect,” He says. The rest of the team is comprised of ten juniors and five underclassmen who coach Laffen
will look to further develop throughout the season. “We feel we can be very competitive again this year. This year’s team has the potential for more depth than last year’s team,” Laffen said. The team this year will focus on improvement for both individual players and the team as a whole to make up for the loss. The coaching staff led by Laffen also consist of assistant head coach Scott Hadley and Shane Heiderscheidt look to lead a promising campaign and aim to top competitive conference team G.F.W. and Springfield.

Coached by Julia Battern, these girls have a great sense of direction and a passion for the game. One of the strengths according to Coach Battern is getting up and down the floor. “We hope to have a better transition game this year, and will look to control the tempo that way,” Battern said. The Scarlets also have a deep and talented roster, as they have a lot of experience coming back from last year’s squad. “We have a number of return-
ers who have varsity experience and who have also been playing together over the summer and into the fall,” says Battern. “It was shown in the first few weeks of practice- they are more aware of their teammate’s strengths and habits on the court.” Some players to watch out for this year are senior point guard Sarah Buryska, senior post Jen Larsen, junior guard Lexi Schoper, freshman guard Emily Veroven and sophomore center Hannah Hastings. Schoper led the team last year in scoring, and she is surrounded by great playmakers. When asked about matchups,
Battern said every game was a key matchup. “We have a very strong conference and section, and we need to be prepared and ready every game night,” she goes on to say. Some points of emphasis Mankato West goes by are preparedness, passion and communication. Some upcoming games are tonight against Willmar high school and tomorrow night at Red Wing high school. The Mankato East high school game will be set for January 13th at home. The Mankato West boys' basketball team is hoping for some more success after a solid record of 18-9 last season. “The Big 9 Conference is very good this season, so it is hard to pick a favorite,” coach Thomas Boone said. Key players returning from last season are Alex Goettl, Carter Burmeister, Jake Dale, Jake Makela, Matt Braun, Steve Nessler and Josh Athey will return after missing all of last season due to injury. The captains for the squad this year will be Matt Braun, Jake Dale and Carter Burmeist. Dale is close to a fantastic individual record as he has 915 career points and will be closing in on 1,000 for his career as a Scarlet.
According to Coach Boone, the section should come down to Marshall High School, Mankato West High School, Mankato East high school and Hutchinson High School. Jake Dale is the core for this group, as he averaged 17.7 points per game last season. He also led the team in rebounds, averaging 6.9 boards a game. Burmeister led all players in assists a game, as he was averaging 5.3 dimes a game. Some upcoming matchups to look forward to are Friday at home against Red Wing and Sat-
urday at Northfield high school. The big rivalry matchup willk be January 13th, home versuss t Mankato East high school. The Mankato West wrestlingi squad is hoping for bigger andp better things this season as thes talent spreads across their wholet roster. The 2014-2015 team pro-i vides excitement and anticipation for success with many se-y nior leaders accompanied byo multiple up-and-coming under-T l classmen. t MANKATO WEST • Page c

SAINT CLAIR CYCLONES Boys' basketball looks to match 21-5 2013-2014 campaign. LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer
The Saint Clair boys’ basketball team is coming off of a successful 21-5 season but fell to United South Central 68-54 in the semifinals of sub-section play. The Cyclones lost four key seniors from that team, so the team is searching for its own identity. “We lost four key seniors a year ago, three of which played or started the past three seasons. This team needs to write its own legacy; which will take some time to figure out,” said head coach Charles Freitag. As for every team, the goal of the Cyclones is to go out and win, just like they showed last season. “Our team goals are always to win championships,” said Freitag. The Cyclones won the Valley Conference a season ago, that defending that is a main goal for Freitag and company. “We start with defending the conference championship we won a year ago. The sub-section and section championships are
next on the list,” Freitag said. The Cyclones lost some key players, but they are also returning a couple of solid players from last season’s conference championship team. Senior Austin Nagel is back to lead the Saint Clair, Nagel averaged 15 points and four rebounds. He will be a key contributor on the offensive side of the ball, along with Juniors Brandon Goebel and Brandon Freitag who both averaged nine points a game as sophomores a year ago. Last season the Cyclones went 21-1 in conference play to bring home the Valley Conference championship, including going 9-0 at home. As a team they scored 71 points a game while giving up 62 points a game. The Cyclones opened their season at Springfield, losing 9477, but were able to bounce back against Blooming Prairie and Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 74-60 and 59-55 respectfully. They get their chance at redemption when they travel to Wells to

SIBLEY EAST WOLVERINES
Veteran players look to lead boys and girls basketball. T
DEREK LAMBERT Staff Writer After a 6-17 season in 20132014, the Sibley East Wolverines boys’ basketball team looks to turning things around and building a better season in 2014-2015. Starting out the season 1-1 after a 79-70 win over Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial followed by a lopsided 71-46 loss to Maple River, the Wolverines hope their veteran players can get them the needed scoring to push for an above .500 record this year. Seniors Zac Weber, Darin Neisen and Jordan Petzel return after receiving big minutes last season. Weber started all 18 games for the Wolverines a season ago and averaged 13.6 points per game for 245 points on the season, and a season high of 28 in a game. Neisin started 16 games while averaging 6.9 points per game for a season total of 110, with a single-game high of 15. Petzel started in 17 of 18 contests last season with an average of 5.2 points per game. His season high for a single game was 15 points. This season, Weber leads the team in points per game, averaging 12 through the first two matchups of the season, while Petzel has averaged six. Senior Andrew Bullert has emerged as a solid contributor this season as he sits second on the team in
points per game with eight. A senior heavy squad, the Wolverines carries eight seniors to go along with six juniors and two freshmen. Similarly, the girls’ basketball team at Sibley East also carries a veteran heavy team. With five seniors and three juniors, the veterans outnumber the newcomers of three freshmen and two sophomores. Last season, the Wolverine girls went 7-15, but return some of their scorers from a year ago. Senior McKenzie Sommers led the way last season as a junior with some impressive stats. Sommers averaged 9.4 points per game for 150 points on the season. She also shot 50 percent from the free throw line and had a single-game season high of 18 points. Also a big asset for the Wolverines is having Katie Tuchtenhagen back. Last season as a sophomore, Tuchhtenhagen averaged 5.8 points per game for 92 points on the season. She also had a singlegame season high of 13 points during the year. Also notable is the return of the team’s top rebounders. Last season, Sommers averaged an incredible eight rebounds per game, while junior Mckayla

Madelia Blackhawks DENZELL CASTRO-OATS Staff Writer Madellia girls' basketball is led by new head coach Burnett Walton, and Burnett looks to improve the team from a season last year where they only won three games. They are returning top players in Danielle Arndt and Melody Colon who are both seniors. Coach Burnett describes the team as “young and with little experience”. Coach Burnett will improve the young team in a developing program. They will continue play Dec. 16th against United South Central girls team. The boys' basketball team of Madelia is led by Coach Jeff VanHee. They currently stand 1-2-0 in the season and will resume play Dec. 16th as well against Alden-Conger. The Madelia wrestling squad will compete next at Sibley East and Glencoe – Lester Prairie on Dec 16th.

MANKATO EAST COUGARS
Things are looking up for Mankato East athletics this winter. CHUCK ABBOTT Staff Writer
The Cougar boys' basketball team will look to improve upon their 12-15 record last season. The team gained a lot of experience last year and comes into this year loaded with upperclassmen. The Cougars have 14 juniors and seniors playing this year, which will help them in close games to keep their composure and stay focused when the going gets tough and they face their conference foes in games this year. The team went 7-11 in the conference last year, which can be improved. They did boast a winning record at home last season, going 6-5, but this year they hope to play
well away from home and not be phased by away team gym atmospheres with loud crowds cheering for the other team. So far this year, the team has split its six games into three wins and three losses. They just recently suffered a devastating one-point loss to Marshall, but look to bounce back from the loss against Rochester Mayo. The Cougar girls' basketball team achieved a winning record in the 2013-14 season, going 14-13 in their 27 games last season. They went .500 in their conference games last year and played very well at home with an 8-4 record. Head Coach Dave Makela mentioned that the team was .500 for basically the whole

season but saw drastic improvement from when the team started to March. The team lost two college bound players in Claire Ziegler and Taylor Karge, yet two sophomores, Torey Richards and Shayla Karge, have stepped up and will try to fill the shoes of the two leaving players. Athleticism is a strength for this team, but they are still inexperienced and young. With nine underclassmen making up the majority of the team, most of the girls have not played in high intensity
varsity games and the team will be tested early on in the season. If Coach can develop his young talent quickly, the Cougars will have a solid core of players to compete this year as well as in the future. Coach said that there are three teams that could give the Cougars the most trouble would be Rochester John Marshall, Owatonna and Winona. Last season against these three teams, the Cougars went 2-4. A .500 or better this year would definitely be a confidence booster

for them throughout the season. The Gymnastics team last year was filled with a lot of raw athletes and Coach Brianne Frawley is excited about the potential of this year's team. “Last year was a building year for East Gymnastics. We had a very young team which made 2 of our sophomores captains. A lot of out girls were first year gymnasts who came out for the

team to try the sport. Last year, we had fun, we learned and grew as a team,” Coach said. They just hosted the “Flip for a Cure” tournament and were excited by the big crowd that attended, and because it was their first invitational of the year. The team is eager to be competing with Big 9 Conference rookie Northfield, who has multiple state titles in their trophy case. A good performance against them will surely bring confidence to the young team. Mankato East’s boys' hockey team struggled last season, finishing 8-18 with a conference record of 3-10. However, this year might be a totally different story. With a large collection of seniors, they will look to lead this team throughout the year and are determined to finish stronger than they did last year. The team is 2-3 so far this season, with wins
against Albert Lea and Faribault. From their five games this year, they have given up 26 goals, which cannot make Coach Adam Fries happy. They will have to be much better when the puck is in their zone to contend for a potential state tournament birth. The Cougar girls' hockey Team was pretty successful last year, going 16-11 overall in the 2013-14 season. The team even made it to sections, where a win against Hutchinson in the first round lead to a loss in the second round at the hands of Litchfield/ Dassel-Cokato in heartbreaking 3-2 loss. They look to continue their success under head coach Nathan Fuller. With just four seniors, this team appears to lack experience at the varsity level and could struggle this year. If Coach Fuller can have his young skaters step up and fill in lines they could end up with a solid
year and a young core of players to build around and continue their development. “Some good things happened. We had a heavyweight named Logan Swanson place 4th in the State and had a successful JV. The varsity record, however, was 2-19 and that was disappointing,” Dierks said. Coach Dierks was not happy about last season’s 2-19 record yet is encouraged about this year and years to come. “Our biggest weakness has always been numbers. We need more wrestlers on our team to create competition for spots. Along with that, we need to bring in some experienced wrestlers into our junior high from Elementary. Getting a good Youth Program is going to be key. Our biggest strength is a good number of quality athletes in our light weights right now. We just need

them to stay with the program and have them grow and spread out though the weight classes,” Coach said. There are a couple of games the team has circled on their calendar, starting with Mankato West. West won the match last year by just three, so look for that matchup to be close again this
year. Also, the two front-runners for the conference are big games for the Cougar wrestlers. Albert Lea and Owatonna have strong teams this year, so if East can squeak out a victory against one of if not all three teams this year, those would be huge wins for the program.

Maple River Eagles Boys Basketball hoping to compete for conference and section crowns by seasons end. DENZELL CASTRO-OATS Staff Writer The Maple River boys' basketball team expects to be a much improved club from last year. "Last season, we were young and inexperienced," Head coach Chad Ostermann expressed. "Hopefully the game experience the kids received last year helps them for this season." Maple River has a nice group of returnees in Jonah Breiter who averaged 17 points per game and Grant Sonnek who averaged 6.4 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game and a solid bunch of newcomers that will compete for playing time. "We hope to compete for conference and section crowns by the end of the year," Ostermann says. Maple River boys wrestling however finished last year with a 14-4 dual meet record and won the Gopher Conference. They had 5 individuals qualify for state and 2 of those place in the top 3 in the state. “We are looking forward to another successful season this
year where we expect to be in the mix for the Gopher Conference title and top 4 section finish,” head coach Dan Robbins said. The captains this season will be Derek Moore, Russell Caldwell and Noah Greenfield. These 3 guys are hard workers and head wrestling coach Robbins expects them to lead the team both on the mat and in the classroom. Noah and Russell both qualified for state individually last season and we expect the same again this year. They will have many 7th - 9th graders who will make an impact on the varsity this year. The Maple River Eagles boys' team currently stand an undefeated record of 5-0-0 in the season and will play next Dec. 18th against Waterville-ElysianMorristown High School. As for the girls' team they are led by head coach Devin Drager. They currently stand 1-1-0 in the season and will play next on December 16th in St. Peter.

Simmons is entering her fourth year on the varsity team and has averaged 11.4 points per game to go along with 9.8 rebounds per game, while Tlusty is in her third year on the varsity squad and averaged 8.2 points per game. Hiller is a defensive specialist in her third season with the Bluejays, averaging 4.3 points per game. Leading the way for Waseca is Rolling, the point guard and floor general is en-
The Waseca Bluejays have begun their winter sports season, and things look fairly promising for the blue and yellow. On the mat, the Bluejays have a good corps of returning wrestlers from last year’s squad and with that come some high expectations. “The expectations are very high for our team this season as we return our entire starting lineup except for one senior,” head coach Zach Hall said. “We expect to win over half of our matches this season and look to send multiple wrestlers to the state tournament.” Waseca has over a handful of essential members to their team, including Cade King and Justin Sampson wrestling at 106-113, Lucas Hagel wrestling in the

tering her fourth varsity season. Rolling is a returning captain, who holds the school record for steals in a season and has averaged an impressive 15.1 points per game. To help carry the load for the Bluejays is Aubrey Highum. “Aubrey started the first two games last year and then missed the rest of the season due to injury,” said Conway. “She is extremely aggressive, has a high passion for basketball and gives the team needed height and athleticism.” As for where these girls may end up next season is still a question mark, but playing college ball is definitely a possibility. “Rolling and Simmons both have the potential to do so,” said Conway. “Both have been con-

Some returners are looking to expand their role on the team, while some newcomers are looking to make a name for themselves at the varsity level. “Justin Sampson, who saw some varsity time last year but was behind a very good Cade king at 106, will win a lot of matches for us this season and we look for a lot of big things from him,” said Hall. “Denver Daniels enters our program as a 7th grader this season who had a lot of success as a 6th grader and we expect some big things from him in the future. Cy Kuschel is a new member to our varsity team and has worked very hard in the offseason and expect him to be a big part of our lineup.”
The youth of this team is also a huge asset for the Bluejays in building a solid foundation for years to come. This year’s team only rosters two seniors who will be graduating after this season, returning much of the team’s regulars for the next few seasons. Some of the Bluejays even have their sights set on performing past the high school level. “Hagel is a very talented lightweight and is planning on pursuing a college wrestling career, but is undecided on where yet,” said Hall. “And Bomsta excels in both wrestling and football and will likely play football next year, but is also undecided.” On the court, the girl’s basketball team also has some high expectations for this year’s squad, led by some veteran players up front. “We will be led this year by

SAINT CLAIR take on United South Central on December 22nd. Look for the Cyclones to keep their competitive play up from a season ago, returning three key players who averaged at least nine points a game. Saint Clair is in good shape going into the 2014-15 season. The Saint Clair girls’ basketball team is coming off of a 10-15 season, including a quarterfinal subsection victory over Granada-Huntley-East Chain 56-53 in overtime, who they lost to in the regular season 61-47, then fell to United South Central 6046 in the semifinals. Megan Gahl and Jessica Loeffler are the two seniors set to lead the Cyclones for the 2014-15 season. The Greyhounds also have two juniors, Danielle Boettcher and Megan Ward. Saint Clair only has nine people on their roster, including two sophomores and three freshmen, so depth is something head coach Brain Noyes will have to work through to keep the success rolling off a playoff win a year ago. continued from 5 up 57.5 points per game a year ago; the Cyclones will have to flip the script on their point-differential to be successful this season. The Cyclones opened up the 2014-15 season at home against New Ulm, losing 48-40. They get the rematch with the team that knocked them out of the playoffs a year ago, United South Central on January 5th in Wells. The Saint Clair/Mankato Loyola wrestling team got the seven seed and won their first round section match a year ago over Blooming Prairie 44-24, and then fell to second seeded Blue Earth Area 62-9. St.Clair/Loyola has two seniors on the squad, 126 pounder Austin Weis and 160 pound Gage Thom. They will lead a young roster ranging from two juniors to a seventh grader. Saint Clair/Mankato Loyola on averaged scored 30.1 team points, and gave up 38.2 points. They knocked off the two area Big 9 conference schools Mankato West and East. St.Clair/Loyola beat East 40-24 and then beat West 41-36. The Cyclones did not fare as well this season against the much larger school, dropping its 201415 season opener against Mankato East 48-27, then beat Blooming Prairie 34-25. They then dropped their final match to Maple River 58-9. Head coach Brandon Greiner has a solid group of wrestlers this season, and getting better and gaining experience will be key for the Cyclones to build off the success of last season.

season, and are a heavy favorite to return again this season with one of the most heavily recruited young players in the state, freshman Jaxon Nelson, who has 11 points through two games. The Bluejays also lost a close one to Redwood Valley 4-3 on the road, but hopefully they can turn things around as it’s early in the season, and they return their top scorers from a season ago. Senior Cody Ulfers returns for his senior season after posting 23 goals and 18 assists in 22 games last year as a junior, and JP Eykyn and Richard Volkmer return after posting 31 and 25 points last season, respectively. The road ahead looks bright,
though. With the leadership up front from their top scorers, the Bluejays should be able to get some wins to improve their record in the near future against opponents Austin, Fairmont, Worthington and Windom Area before a rematch with Luvurne. Now that they’ve seen what a state tournament team can bring to the table, a rematch should be a good measuring stick of where this team can go for the remainder of the season.

Girls basketball returns three AllConference players in wide open Section.
TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer This year’s girls’ basketball team is coached by Bob Southworth, in his 5th year with the team. The Saints have three All-Conference players returning this season. Starting with senior Olivia Hass, who averaged 11 points, 10 rebounds and 2.5 blocks a game last season. Then there’s Logan Retzlaff, who’s a senior this season after averaging 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2 steals per game. Finally, there is the junior in Sid Welp, as she averaged 7 points and 4.5 rebounds a game last year during her sophomore season. The team has a lot of returning starters this year, so they are poised to have good chemistry and get the ball rolling. Last year, the squad went 1711, losing to Waterville-EysianMorristown in the sub-section semifinals. The Saints were 7-3 in the conference, marking a tie for second place in that category. “The section should be more wide open than it has been in the last 4 years,” says Coach Southworth. “There is any number of teams that I think could make a run at the section title. On our half of the Section I expect NRHEG, WEM, and Tri-City United to be 3 of the top teams. In the North half of the section I believe Norwood Young America, Jordan, and Glencoe- Silver Lake to be towards the top.” Southworth is excited for his Saints, believing his team will be able to compete with most of the teams in their section. The key will be to always get better, and Southworth hopes to have a polished team by season’s end. Southworth said “Our half of the Big South Conference will be much more improved over last season. I think every team will be better than last year. There won't be any easy wins during conference play. The favorite on the west side of the conference has to be Marshall and I feel they have to be favored to win the Conference Championship.” The Saints do not play Marshall in the regular season, but they very well could see them come playoff time. Olivia Hass is only 311 points away from hitting the 1000 mark. She is also 323 rebounds shy of breaking the school record. “For our team to reach our goals we will need our best players to play at a consistent level and will need to have 2 or 3 girls take that next step in their development and be consistent contributors,” states Southworth.
The boys’ basketball team is led by Coach Sean Keating. This team has a lot of experience, as everyone except for two players are upperclassmen. The lone senior on the team is guard Khlaid Omar. Some upcoming games for the Saints are against New Prague (12/09), New Ulm (12/11), and Le Sueur-Henderson (12/16). Head Coach Stacy Kurth will lead this squad this season. The roster includes freshman Josie Carlson, sophomore Keegan Kurth, eighth grader Kenna Zelenka, freshman Kenzie Kienholz, senior Lexi Wilkens, freshman Maddy Rimstad, senior Rebekah Berry and freshman Teagan Weiss. The team has upcoming matches against Waseca (12/09), Blue Earth Area (12/11), and Saint James (12/18). Head Coach Keith Hanson has quite the range when it comes to levels of performance for his wrestling squad. The team has eight seventh graders, three eighth graders, four freshmen, four sophomores, six juniors and two seniors. The two seniors to lead this team are Bailey Kurth and Major Brock. Some upcoming matchups to look out for are Maple River (12/09), Sibley East (12/12), and Delano (12/13).

Coach Dustin Buttell broke things down in two separate categories, as he has upper class leaders and up-and-coming leaders. The upper class leaders this season are seniors Evan Jakes, Charlie Dundas, Russell Koenigs, Noah Lowe and Sam Schwartz. The up-and-coming leaders are juniors Tyler Kopp, Jaeger Moser, Josiah Dahlgren, Garrett Block, and freshmen Zachary Jakes, Josh Block and Dustin Mueller. “The Big 9 Conference is a very tough conference,” Coach Buttell states. “Each Big 9 dual will require a full team effort to be competitive with such good teams.” He also goes on to talk about the Section 2AA, in which he addresses the fact that 2AA is one of the best “AA” sections in the State. “Tournament time will be very exciting as always anticipated,” Buttell said. They are a team that is united as one and focus on sticking together to make the magic happen. Within the past 15 years, Tyler Jakes owns the best record at Mankato West as the senior is approaching 200 victories soon. Some upcoming matches for the Scarlets are Thursday against Northfield and Owatonna, Dec. 18 against rival Mankato East, and Dec. 19 pitted up against Red-River Valley high school. This year’s gymnastics team is led by seniors Anna Bahr, Cierra Goerish, Maddie Maruska and Taylor Amundson. Head Coach Mark Morphew is hoping for a successful season out of his girls. The Mankato West gymnastics team’s schedule has Owatonna on the 16th of December, followed by a match against Winona/Cotter. The boys' hockey team has a lot of depth on the roster this season, as they have 13 total upperclassmen. The team this year is led by seniors Austin Langworthy, Jake Sisco, Christian Klemme, Evan McKissick, Nicholas Sanford and Conor Wollenzien. The Scarlets have upcoming games against Northfield, Albert Lea, and Fairbult. The head coach at Mankato West is Curtis Doell. The girl’s hockey club has the opposite situation of the boys this year, as they have a lot of young players on their squad. There are three eighth graders on the roster this season. They are led by their seniors Lynn Braun and Aisha Abdo. Mankato West has their next games schedule are Albert Lea (Dec. 13), and Hutchinson (Dec. 16). They are coached by Tom Villagomez.

MANKATO LOYOLA CRUSADERS With a ton of depth, heach coach Tim Anderson has a lot to be excited about. LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer

The Mankato Loyola boys’ basketball team is coming off of a 14-12 (8-5) season where they won their first round playoff game Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton before falling to Mountain Lake Area by 9 in the sub-section semifinals. Head coach Tim Anderson is excited about this year’s team as well with 20 junior and seniors on the team. Anderson hopes for a playoff run. “We are looking for a fun and successful season this year. Our expectations are high and we should be able to compete for the Valley Conference title,” Anderson said. “Our depth is our strength; we have a lot of players who will be able to contribute to this year’s team success,” Anderson said. Leading the Crusaders is Senior Justin Kletchka, who led Mankato Loyola with nine points and eight rebounds a game a year ago. He is a go-to-player for the Crusaders. Other rotation players from a year ago are Seniors James Marti, Malik Baxter, Taylor Barnes
and Junior Noah Rajtar. The Crusaders are also getting back Senior John Fink, who was held out due to injury last year, and he will be seeing major minutes for Mankato Loyola. Juniors Jackson Dehen and Patrick Doyle are new comers5 to the varsity squad and will seeo some playing time as well thisp 2 season. The Crusaders will be lookingv to build off a playoff victory fromJ a year ago. “We hope to play well whenb playoff time comes,” Anderson2 t said. During the 2013-14 season thei Crusader averaged 63.5 points aM game and gave up 59.5 points ai game. With plenty of depth ands returning players, the Crusadersw are in good shape to make a run2 come playoff time. The Crusaders also swent to the State tournament in n2012-13. f The Crusaders had a 17-game awin streak in the 2013-14 season ,and are bringing back three semnior players. Megan Schroeder, nEmily Gaspar and Alexx Clow will lead the Crusaders this searson. Mankato Loyola is also has ttwo juniors, Ester Archer and ,Kayle Welch, to go along with 4 sophomores in Lindsey Theuninck, RaeAnn Dose, Hailey Meyer-James and Rielle Gosch.
A season ago, the Crusaders had a solid offense that averaged 64.8 points per game, including a 93-point effort at the first round of the State Tournament. The Crusaders held opponents to an impressive 43.6 points per game. The combination of a high octane offense and a shutdown defense proved to be beneficial to the Crusaders a year ago. Mankato Loyola will have to keep the pressure up if they want to make it three straight trips to the State Tournament. Mankato Loyola will opened its season against Martin Luther, and showed they still are the team to beat in Section 2 Class A, getting the 75-47 victory. The Crusaders will have a section final rematch from a year ago on January 19th, when they travel to Lester Prairie to take on the Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity Bulldogs.

Lake Crystal Wellcome-Memorial Upperclassmen leadership could be the key to success for the Knights in 2014-2015.

DEREK LAMBERT Staff Writer The Knights from Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial have gotten off to a 2-2 start on the court. The boys' basketball team collected wins over Belle Plaine and Nicollet to keep their record at the .500 mark early in the season. Though the Knights don’t carry a large roster, they do return a couple of their top returners to lead the way this season. After losing their top three leading scorers last season to graduation, new players have to step up and fill the shoes left behind by a strong senior class in 2013-2014. Senior guard Nick Thul returns after posting 8.7 points per game a year ago and averaging five rebounds per game, and a single-game season high of 11 a year ago. Fellow senior guard Mark Jacobs is right there with him up front, coming off a season where he averaged 5.4 points per game with a singlegame season high of nine last season. This could be the year the Knights make a push for the state tournament at the Target Center in Minneapolis, but their roster suggests that they may yet be a season away. With only two seniors on the boy’s basketball team, LCWM boasts seven junior players and three sophomores, making up the vast majority of their team.
With a good season in 20142015, next year’s squad should be an experienced veteran team. With a handful of Valley Conference games left on their schedule, the Knights have plenty of time to climb the conference standings before heading into Section 3AA play in February. The girl’s basketball team at LCWM hasn’t gotten off to quite the same start, but it is still very early on in the season, and there is optimism. With an 0-2 start, the Knights are mere inches away from being 2-0. Their home opener was a two-point loss to Nicollet with a 47-45 score, and then they dropped their second game to Le Sueur-Henderson by a score of 62-59. So while the Knights’ record indicates a tough start, it could easily be the other way around. Junior forward Rachel Sonnabend and junior guard Kendra Kaupa lead the way for the lady Knights, both averaging an impressive 16 points per game so far this season, while senior center Lauren Hesser has averaged 11 points per game so far. With 17 games remaining on the schedule for the Knights, the hope is they can find that extra something to put them over the edge in these tightly battled losses they’ve experienced thus far in the season. Their veteran loaded roster should help as they go through the 2014-2015
season. The Knights carry six seniors on the girl’s hoops squad, along with five juniors and only two sophomores, so experience could be key late in the season when they look to make a playoff push through the Section 3AA tournament in March on their road the the state tournament in Minneapolis. On the mat, the wrestling squad boasts the largest roster of the Knights’ winter sports, with 38 wrestlers competing this winter. Most notable, is the broad range of weight classes and ages on this team. LCWM wrestling rosters six seventh graders, an eighth grader, six freshmen, six sophomores, eight juniors, and 11 seniors. Among them, there are eight wrestlers who wrestle in the 106 weight class, four at 113, three at 120, two at 126, four at 132, one at 138, four at 145, two at 152, three at 170, three at 180, three at 220, and one at 285. The wrestling Knights have yet to take their talents to the mat this season, but have an action packed January with 16 meets over the course of the month, leading into the Section 4A tournament in February. The Holy Grail for these athletes is in St. Paul, where the state tournament is held at the Xcel Energy Center February 26-28th.

LUKE LONIEN Staff Writer The 2013-2014 season was a successful one for the Mavericks, finishing the year with a 30-5 (19-3) record. The Mavericks brought home the NSIC Tournament title to go along with a trip to the NCAA Central Region tournament where they fell to Northwest Missouri State 71-66. “We have won five of the last seven conference championships and we want to continue that on,” said head coach Matt Margenthaler. “we look at getting better every day, defensively and offensively.” The Mavericks will be led by seniors Assem Marei and Zach Monaghan. Marei is coming off of an impressive season where he put up 16.3 points a game and 8.2 rebounds a game, leading the team in both and earning himself All-NSIC first-team honors. Monaghan is coming off a season full of accolades. Monaghan averaged 15.4 points per game and 8.1 assists per game, which led the nation. Monaghan earned All-American second-team honors, NSIC tournament MVP, NSIC Player of the Year and Daktronics Central Region Player of the Year. “Zach led the nation in assist which is huge because he gets guys shots, and Assem is a very talented big man in the post. When you have a great big man and a great point guard it is a great place to start,” said Margenthaler. Other key players for the Mavericks are senior Zach Romashko, sophomore Mike Buscaks,
Romashko led all Mavericks with 15 points, followed up by Marei who added 14 points along with five rebounds for the MSU. Busack scored 13 for the Mavericks, while Monaghan led the Mavericks with eight assist. The Mavericks also took on Waldorf over the weekend where MSU ended the first half on a 30-11 run that really opened the door to a Maverick victory. The Mavericks and Warriors were tied at 14 apiece when MSU took off on the run. The Mavericks used the run to take a 44-25 lead into halftime. The Mavericks saw themselves push the lead to over 30 in the second half which help the Maverick ride out the second half to an 86-62 win.

junior Lucas Brown, redshirt freshman TJ Lake and senior transfer Connor Miller. “These are kind of our core guys for us,” Margenthaler said. “We have to get better defensively and gel. We have to do better rebounding the basketball and not allowing our opponents second and third chances,” said Margenthaler. “Offensively we have some new faces and we have to get that continuity going. We also have some really good shooters not shooting well right now and we have to get that roll-
ing.” Romashko has played some good minutes for the Mavericks the past three seasons, averaged 7.3 points and 2.9 rebounds a season ago. Busack averaged 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds in 26 games for MSU in 2013-14, connecting on 39 shots from beyond the three-point line. Brown suffered an injury a season ago and played in 2 games, putting up 16 points and three rebounds. “Making the postseason is a goal for us. Anytime you have an opportunity to make postseason

Minnesota Valley Lutheran Chargers Veteran leadership to lead the Chargers on the court this winter. TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer Last season, the girls rattled of a respectable 17-9 season. They fell in the 2A Sub-Section Final to Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity 82-80 in double overtime. Seniors and captains to lead this team are Alexa Diersen, Anna Munsen, and Rebekka Olsen. Munsen scored her 1,000th point last season and looks to keep adding to that total this year. “Anna Munsen and Johanna Kettner will be strong post players for us this season, and sophomore Cham Omot will play some post off the bench,” Coach Biedenbender explains. “Junior Molly Stark will play point guard for us and freshman Maddie Spurgin will be her back-up. Junior guards Sarah Stelljes and Megan Westphal will come off the bench.” Some of their strengths this season will be their post play, half-court defense, and free throw shooting. Perimeter shooting and overall guard play will be the challenges to consider for this season. The Tomahawk Conference will be very even this season with MVL, Wabasso, Springfield, Sleepy Eye, Cedar Mt./ Comfrey, and GFW all having a chance at the conference title. In Minnesota Valley Luther-

an’s section, Section 2A, Mankato Loyola will be a favorite again with MVL, Springfield, Sleepy Eye, Cedar Mt. /Comfrey, and Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity all having a shot at the section title. Anna Munsen averaged 19.2 points per game last season, while also averaging 11.1 rebounds a game. She is the force that will help drive this team. Coming up for Minnesota Valley Lutheran is West Lutheran (Dec. 12), and the MLC Tournament (Dec. 13). The team has a good handful of sophomores, so the team is young this season. With some leadership from their seniors, the team should find their way to victories as long as everyone learns quickly throughout the year. The team is led by five seniors- Aaron Buch, Seth Wiechman, Josh Koelpin, Eric Westphal and Seth Kroells. The head coach is Craig Morgan, and the team is a good mix of experience and youth on the team. Some upcoming games are West Lutheran (Dec. 12), Sleepy Eye (Dec. 16), Nicollet (Dec. 18) and Fairmont (12/26).

Blue Earth Area Buccaneers MSU BASKETBALL "We have to get better defensively and gel. We have to do better at rebounding the basketball and not allow our opponents second and third chances," Margenthaler said.

Monaghan led the Mavericks with seven assist to go along with his seven points. “I thought we played o.k.,” said coach Margenthaler. “We just wanted to get better, and I thought in several spots we got better, It showed what we have to work on and whenever you can get two wins and still find those things out it’s a successful weekend.” “We know we are a work in progress, and we have to continue to get better here on out. We have two great games in Florida and then we start league play.” The Mavericks move to a 3-1 record on the season after the weekend sweep. 2014-2015 MSU Men's Hockey Season Preview DEREK LAMBERT Staff Writer The Minnesota State University, Mankato Maverick men’s hockey team ended last winter with their best season in the program’s division I history, and come into this season with equally high expectations. In 2013-2014, the Mavs set a program record with 26 wins when they compiled a 26-14-1 record on their way to finishing second in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, their highest finish in 14 seasons in the conference. They kept rolling into the postseason and won their first Broadmoor Trophy as the WCHA Final Five Tournament champions, giving them an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. Though MSU lost to UMassLowell in the first round of the NCAA tournament, it was the first back-to-back NCAA tournament appearance in the program’s division I history, and third overall in that era. They fell short of their goal of making it to the Frozen Four for the first time in program history, but the success they did have is building this program into a consistent top-20 team. Looking ahead to this season, the Mavs have to replace last year’s captain and leading goal scorer Johnny McInnis, who finished with 21 on the year. His scoring touch will be missed as he has begun his professional career playing in the Colorado Avalanche minor league system.
But MSU brings back plenty of firepower and some freshmen with high expectations to keep this team rising to the top of college hockey. On Monday, coaches and media around the WCHA took to voting on the preseason favorite to win the MacNaughton Cup as the regular season champions, as well as voting on preseason individual honors and all-conference teams. The Mavericks received a lot of recognition in these polls, receiving nine of 10 coaches votes to finish first in the league. Ferris State, last season’s MacNaughton Cup champions, received the only other first place vote. Head Coach Mike Hastings felt honored to have his team voted as the favorite to win the conference, but he knew it was just a poll. “It doesn’t spot us a goal or give us a win,” said Hastings. Aside from the team as a whole, there were some individuals who received some recognition today during the poll voting. Senior forward Matt Leitner, the Mavericks’ leading scorer the past three seasons, was the media’s choice for preseason WCHA Player of the Year, while also being named to the preseason All-WCHA team. Teammates Jean-Paul LaFontaine and Zach Palmquist were also named to the preseason All-WCHA team, while freshmen C.J. Franklin and Brad McClure tied in the coach’s poll for preseason WCHA Rookie of the Year. While the preseason honors
may be flattering and show that MSU will again bring a competitive team to the ice, they’ll need to show up and earn it in a tough WCHA conference. But let’s look at what the Mavs have in their lineup that earned them the title of preseason favorite. Despite the loss of McInnis, the Mavericks bring back Leitner, who led the Mavs with 45 points last season and logging top minutes on the MSU power play that was fourth best in the nation a year ago. Leitner’s go-to man on the power play last season was LaFontaine, who finished second in the nation with 14 goals on the man advantage last season. These two should combine for a number of power play tallies this season. Though Leitner and LaFontaine are a couple of names Maverick fans expect to put points on the board, they have another emerging star that blossomed in the second half of last season. Junior Bryce Gervais went on a hot streak towards the end of the season in what was a break out year for the speedy forward. In his last 15 games, Gervais posted 18 points to finish with 26 on the year, including a third-best 16 goals. With these three and a lineup that has another season of experience under their belt, this could be the most potent offense an MSU team has ever seen. On the back end, the Mavericks return two senior defenseman in Palmquist and Brett Stern, who will captain the Mavericks this winter. The Mavs also lost two defenseman over the
summer as Mat Knoll left the team to return to his Canada and finish his schooling, while Jon Jutzi left the team for personal reasons, but stated he will return in spring semester. Knoll played in 11 games last season, often at forward, while Jutzi was a regular, playing in all 41 games last season. Sophomore and alternate captain Carter Foguth and junior Blake Thompson bring size to the blueline, while sophomore Casey Nelson brings a puck moving, offensive flare to the backend. Despite a very well rounded lineup, between the pipes may be the brightest spot on this Maverick squad. MSU has not one, but two WCHA Goaltender of the Year award winners. Sophomore goaltender Cole Huggins won the award as a freshman last season after junior Stephon Williams accomplished that same feat the prior season, also as a freshman. Both are very capable net minders, but Huggins looks to be the starter to begin this season.
Posting a stingy 1.88 goals against average and an impressive .926 save percentage, Huggins led the Mavs to the NCAA tournament after starting the season as a backup to Williams. His six shutouts last season marked a school record for single season shutouts, and if he remains consistent, the starting job is his to lose. As a whole, this Maverick team may be the deepest lineup MSU has seen during the division I era, which places some high expectations on the boys from Mankato. They’ll first get to showcase their talent on Sunday at the Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato when Trinity Western (British Columbia) comes to town for an exhibition matchup slated for a 5:07 p.m. puck drop. The regular season begins for the Mavericks in a nonconference series with an old conference opponent at the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 10.

New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds New coach Dave Wilfahrt looking to improve New Ulm Cathedral this season. helping out the Greyhounds as well. “We are looking to do some fundamental things really well and improve throughout the season,” said Wilfahrt. The fundamentals will push New Ulm Cathedral this season. With a small-numbered team, the Greyhounds will have to be fundamentally sound to compete. With a first year head coach, New Ulm Cathedral has been working on a lot of different aspects of their game. “With a new coaching staff we have been working on a number of new things,” Wilfahrt said. “The girls have been working very hard during practice and are doing a great job working together as a team.” “Things have been really positive for and we are looking to be competitive in each game,”
Wilfahrt said. This was a coming scene a year ago, the Greyhounds averaged 46.3 points per game, and gave up 43.1. With an average differential of three points a game last season, the Greyhounds know what it is like to play in close games. This will be beneficial to them going into next season. The New Ulm Cathedral Boys’ Basketball team had a 7-18 record during their 2013-14 campaign, dropping their quarterfinal sub-section game to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, 53-43. away, who will lead the team this year along with three juniors, Jenessa Rothmeier, Leah Krzmarzick and Anna Mohr. There will be three sophomores in the rotation this season, Nicole Gangelhoff, McKenna Berdan and Tessa Wenner, going along with three freshman, Jenna helget, Rose Hazuka and Becca Schwarz,

Senior Samuel Haven also had 11 points for the Cardinals including six goals as well (all stats are according to mnhockeyhub.com). The Cardinals are led by Brady Meyer, and opened up their season against St.Peter/LH/TCU, losing 6-0. They then lost their second game to Waseca 6-4. They won their first round section game against Windom Area 8-0, and then lost their second round game to New Ulm. Head coach John Korsmo and company have a solid group of girls going into their 2014-15 season. Junior Jalyssa Wilson is back to lead the offense, and she had 31 points a year ago including 15 goals. The Fairmont girls’ basketball team went 25-5 during their 2013-14 campaign and reached the section 3 AA title game, but they fell to Redwood Valley 4942. Head coach Don Waletich wants the team to be playing their best basketball of the year late and make a playoff run. “We want to make a run in the playoffs in March,” Waletich said. The Cardinals will be looking to build off of last season’s going into their 2014-15 season. Fairmont has three key returning players from their 2013-14 team, Junior Courtney Mosloski is back, she averaged 10 points and eight rebounds a game during her sophomore season. Senior Alex Christianson was another double-digit scorer for the Cardinals during her junior season, averaging 10 points and six rebounds. She is back to lead Fairmont. Senior guard Sierra Schultz, another key player for Fairmont, averaged eight points and four assist a year ago is back to run the offense in 2014-15. A season ago the Cardinals were good enough to earn the number one seed in 2013-14. The Cardinals won the sub-section,
and then fell to the three-seed Redwood Valley from the 3AA north sub-section. Fairmont opened their 201415 season against Worthington, winning 55-51. The Cardinals get their rematch from the 201314 section championship against Redwood Valley on December 18th. The Cardinals also travel to play in the Target Center against the Byron Bears on January 17th. Fairmont had a successful 2013-14 season and are looking at using some key players from a year ago to push the Cardinals back into the section championship. With many upperclassmen, the Cardinals are in good shape going into the 2014-15 season. The Fairmont boys’ basketball team went 25-6 a season ago, earning themselves a section 3AA championship and a trip to the State tournament. Fairmont lost their regular season finale to Redwood Valley 97-83, but was able to bounce back in the section championship game, defeating Redwood Valley 84-71. Fairmont won their first game at the Class A State tournament, defeating St. Peter 58-54. Head coach Jared Thompson and the Cardinals have a lot of upperclassmen on their 2014-15
roster including 10 seniors and eight juniors. Some seniors back to lead the Cardinals on their quest to return to the State Tournament are Ben Abel and Dustin Slaughter. The Cardinals opened up their 2014-15 season against Windom Area, falling 55-53. They won their second and third game of the season against Worthington 68-43, and New Ulm 73-45 respectfully. The Cardinals have a rematch with their quarterfinal State tournament opponent St. Peter on December 19th. They travel to the Target Center to take on the Byron Bears on January 17th. They play Redwood Valley in a Section 3 title match on January 26th. The Cardinals have a lot of senior leadership to put them on the road to a repeat section 3 title, it may take some time with seniors lost, but expect the Cardinals in the mix of the section 3 title race. The Fairmont boys’ hockey team is coming off of a 4-20 season in 2013-14, losing their first round playoff game to Morris/Benson Area. The Cardinals have senior goalie Colton Cunning and Rodney Engstrom back to lead the team in 2014-15. Cunning had a 4-19 record

she had 18 points with 11 goals (all stats are according to mngirlshockeyhub.com). The Cardinals opened up their season with a loss to Austin 10-2, but bounced back with two solid wins against Mankato West, 5-2 and Windom Area 6-0. They get their rematch with New Ulm on December 9th. The Cardinals are young going into their 2014-15 season with a current record of 3-2-1, but they still have juniors with experience. If they keep the solid play up, expect the Cardinals to have another successful season
in 2014-15. The Fairmont/Martin County West wrestling team finished the 2013-14 season with a 12-5 record, including a playoff win against New Ulm 55-13. They lost their second round match to Dawson Boyd/LQPV/Montevideo 51-21. The Cardinals are led by head coach Adam Williamson, and bring back five seniors for the 2014-15 season, including Elijah Gronewold, Phillip Bowie and Luis Cordova. The Cardinals opened their
season against Waseca winning 37-32, and then got their chance at a rematch with New Ulm, and succeeded winning the match 51-27. Fairmont/Martin Country West wrestling team is looking to build off their playoff win a year ago and with a solid core of wrestlers back, they have put themselves in a good position to be successful again.

Gangelhoff, Collin Helget and Will Olsen are the six senior leaders for the Greyhounds this season, combined with eight juniors including Jack Schwartz and Ryan Wesselmann, the Greyhounds have a solid group of upperclassmen to carry them for their 2014-15 season. With a solid group of upperclassmen on the team, expect the Greyhounds to be better than their record showed from a year ago. Last season, the Greyhounds averaged 53.0 points per game, while giving up 62.0 points per game. They will have to improve on this if they want to be competitive this upcoming season. New Ulm Cathedral squeaked out a 49-47 victory over Cleveland in the Nicollet Invitational a year ago, and followed that up with a 70-55 win
over Hope Academy. To start off the 2014 season, the Greyhounds are already making a change, knocking off the team that kicked them out of the sub-section playoffs a year ago. New Ulm Cathedral beat Buffalo Lake-HectorStewart 70-30. The Greyhounds dropped the first game of their season to Mankato Loyola 5755. NUC returns to the Nicollet Tournament over the holiday break on December 29th – 30th. They also take on Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity, on February 5th in New Ulm. With a lot of upperclassmen talent, expect the Greyhounds to make their move late in the season in section 2A north.

Senior center Riley McGraw, who stands an intimidating 6’5”, will carry a heavy load for the Giants, while senior point guard Luke Smith and shooting guard Jordan Kahlow will also be a large part of LSH’s game. Also expected to contribute are seniors Coleton Nelson and Alex Nelson, who are expected to start on the floor this season, and juniors Tyler Eccles and Joey Luna will be asked to step up as well to help lead this team to a successful year.

DEREK LAMBERT Staff Writer The Le Sueur-Henderson Giants are hopeful on the ice after a solid 15-7-2 record in 2013-2014. The team, which is a cooperative program with St. Peter High School, is off to a 2-1 start with wins over Austin and Worthington, and a loss to 2014 State Tournament participant Luverne. Senior Sam Wenner is already repeating the impressive season he posted last season by getting off to a great start this season. Wenner, who scored 27 goals and 64 points in 24 games a season ago, has already put up seven goals and 13 points in only three games so far this season. Senior Brett Zallek, who posted 28 points last season, has developed a playmaker’s touch and assisted on five goals through
three games. Zeke Haugen returns as the starting goaltender after appearing in 18 games a season ago, and has started in all three contests this season, including a shutout victory over Worthington in a 16-0 romp.
On the court, the boys’ basketball team looks to make it over the hump of the sectional tournament and make a push for the state tournament in Minneapolis. “We want to build on what we accomplished last year,” said

“I want to be in the top three of the Minnesota River Conference and get to host a first round playoff game, and then go from there,” said Marcussen. “Pretty much everyone in the MRC really wants to beat each other. St. Peter is also a team on our radar since they were the ones who knocked us out of the playoffs last year.” This team looks to carry over the success of last season, and push for a win in that final sectional game to dethrone St. Peter as the sectional champions for a state tournament berth. Meanwhile, the Giants carry a couple of players who may have a future past the high school level.

WATERVILE-ELYSIAN-MORRISTOWN Buccaneers hopeful for a Gopher Conference title on the mat. DENZELL CASTRO-OATS Staff Writer
Last year Waterville-ElysianMorristown finished 2nd in the conference to Maple River with a 4-1 record. They had a 12-13 overall record. During the 20132014 season they lost to Albert Lea in an exciting Section Quarterfinals match up. Some of their individual highlights include three section champions in Skyler Petry - 120, Colin Ayers - 132, and Ben Boran – 160. Skyler Petry would then go on to win the 120AA State Championship title in his class. Colin Ayers at the competition finished 3rd at 132AA, and Ben Boran went 2-2 and did not place. As for this year, the WEM wrestling team is optimistic about their chances of finishing atop in the Gopher Conference. “This year we hope to be in contention for a Gopher Conference Title and finish in the top 4 of the section tournament”, head Coach Troy Stehr says. “We lost a few key wrestlers last year, but we also return several wrestlers that will help the team and are capable of making some noise individually.” Some of those top returners include seniors Boran and Chris
Pettis who were state qualifiers in 2013 and 2014, as well as Taylor Grams, Easton Schuch and Brendan Dimmel. The group of seniors is joined by returning Junior Reid Ayers. Coach Stehr also has high expectations of sophomore Brody Boran and freshman Will Storch to further contribute to the team. Next action for WEM wrestling will be a triangular meet with Fairbault and Albert Lea on Dec. 15th. WEM boys' basketball, led by coach Jeffery Wagner, currently stands at a 3-3-0 season. Next up for them is United South Central. WEM Girls basketball is 1-10. They are led by head Coach Gabe Hauer and will play next in Mankato on Dec. 16th versus Mankato Loyola.

JANESVILLE-WALDORF-PEMBERTON Every JWP winter squad is excited for what 2014-2015 has in store. TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer
This wrestling season is cohead coached by Adam Roesler and Troy Stehr. This will be Roesler’s 10th season, and Stehr’s 4th. Last year, the Bulldogs were 12-13, while going 4-1 in conference play. They won the first round of Section 1 AA playoffs against Faribult. They did lose the next match to Albert Lea Area. One guy lost to graduation is Skyler Petry, who was the Class AA State Champion at 120 pounds. He was a four-time allstate. This year, the Bulldogs will have to rely on senior Chris Pettis (138 pounds, 12-4 last season, State qualifier in 2012-2013), and senior Ben Boran (170 pounds, 29-7 last season, 80-42 career, 2013-2014 State Qualifier). “We are again looking to contend for the Gopher Conference Title after finishing 2nd a season ago with a record of 3-1 in the conference, Coach Adam Roesler says. “We return several good
wrestlers from last year’s team along with getting back 1 key injured wrestler (from football) from a season ago. Who stays the healthiest will also likely have an impact on who will earn the top spot in the conference. In section 1AA competition we would like to see ourselves in the final four of the Team Section tournament. There are several tough teams in the section, but we feel we can compete with the best.” With a great blend of veteran leadership and new prospects that are ready to work, this team has Roesler excited. “Many of the guys jumped at opportunities to start their varsity careers last season due to injuries and match count issues which helped build confidence for this coming season.” Consistency is going to be the key this year, as they do not have any returning letter winners. With their blue collar work ethic, they should find ways to win. Ted Hammond is the head coach for the boys’ basketball team this season, and appears to be very optimistic. They are
looking to improve on last year’s 11-16 record. The school has not seen a winning team since 2008, so this year may change things. There are eight seniors and six juniors on the squad this season. This represents some veteran leadership throughout the squad. There are five seniors that will be leading this team. With that, they should all contribute equally in leadership for this team. First, there are 6’5” seniors in Kyle Fisel and Rickey Johnson who were the leading scorers and rebounders. Zach Janike is also back, as he is a defensive and assist specialist. Tristan Kroll is a slasher and three-point threat and Jordan Richardson is the point guard. “Our strength should be our experience we gained last year and rebounding could be a problem for us,” Coach Hammond says. “We look to be in the thick of the Valley Conference and big games for us will be St. Clair, Mankato Loyola, and

the boys' hockey team looks to capitalize on a 17-11 season in 2013-2014. CHUCK ABBOT Staff Writer The Knights of Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s had a successful season last year, finishing 14-9 on the year and finishing in second place in the Tomahawk conference with an 11-5 record. John Brandl and Mike Hirsch will not be returning to the team as they were seniors last year, and the team has lost four of its five starters from last year. Coach Milliard is excited to coach this team because of their youth and shooting. “Our biggest strength is shooting. We have a number of good shooters on the roster this year. However, our experience is lacking. Not a lot of our players have played at the varsity level.” Although the team lost most of its starters, Coach Milliard is excited about the leadership their senior captain Jared Rothmeier can bring to the younger guys on the team. Jared is our senior captain and has the most varsity experience. We are hoping other players will grow into a leadership role as the season progresses. To have the same success inside the conference schedule this year, they will have to win some big rivalry games this year, and the team is definitely looking forward to two games in particular. “Sleepy Eye Public and New Ulm Cathedral are two main rivalry games for us,” Coach said. The team hopes to win both those games and get momentum early on in their conference schedule this year. The Girls Basketball team for the Knights of Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s is lead by head coach Bruce Woitas, and want to improve on their losing record last season of 11-15. 8 of their 15 losses were decided by 10 points or less, so the team wants to fin-
ish out games this year and get tough wins within the conference this year. They won their first section game last year against the Cleveland Clippers before losing in a close 65-60 loss to Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity. This season, they have started out 1-3 on the new season, with their first game being a heartbreaking one point loss for the team. They bounced back the next day with a 54-42 win, and have lost twice since then. The New Ulm/Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Boys’ Hockey team had some success in 2013-14, going 17-11 on the year. Coach Setterholm does a great job of coaching these kids up and they have had a solid program because of his success. They posted a 5-1 conference record and a 7-1 section record, and finished off the year strong with a 7-3 record. The team was fortunate enough to have some success in the Class A - Section 3 playoffs, winning 6-3 versus Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato and edging out an overtime win against Wilma 5-4 before getting knocked out by Luverne in a disappointing 6-1 loss. This season has started out promising, as the Eagles beat Worthington by a score of 13-1 back on November 20th. This year they hope to get out of sections and be heading to state. Lead by Coach Faber, the New Ulm/Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Girls Hockey Team will be looking to have the same regular season success from last year. “I feel that last season went well. The team had good chemistry on and off the ice and there was a true “team” atmosphere. We finished the season 18-9 ending with a 3OT loss to Alexandria at the state tournament. The team improved throughout the season and worked hard on a daily basis to reach the teams goals,” Coach said.
sleepyeyenews.com
sleepyeyenews.com
So far in 2014, the Knights own a 2-3 overall record.
They dominated their conference, going 6-0 in those games as well as 4-0 in their section. The team did end the season in the heart-breaking loss to Alexandria that took an extra three periods to decide the winner, yet the team is optimistic that this year will be a different story. Our biggest strengths this season will be our offense. We have a number of girls who can really move and shoot the puck. Team chemistry will also be a positive; the group works well together and are in it for each other,” Coach said. Coach Faber also understands areas where they will need to improve upon the year, as they lost six contributing seniors from last year’s team. “The area that I see we will need the most work in will be on defense. We have a young group on the blue line, but with practice and game time I am hoping they can step up and continue improving throughout the season.” If this New Ulm team can figure out opposing attacks, they could see another successful year and make the next step and get into the State Tournament.

The Wolverines wrestling team is quite a bit more diverse when it comes to age. Head Wrestling Coach Chad Johnson rosters eight seniors on his team to go along with two juniors, four sophomores, eleven freshmen, and one eighth grader.
The wrestlers are also dispersed throughout a fairly wide range of weight classes as well. Sibley East carries six wrestlers in the 106 pound weight class, two in the 126 class, three wrestlers at 132, two at 138, two at 145, one at 152, two at 160, two at 170, three at 182, two at 220, and one at 285. LCWM.” The boys this season are simply hoping to stay at a winning pace and capture their first winning season in quite some time. With the balance of an experienced line of seniors mixing in with juniors vying for playing time, this season should be interesting to watch develop. The main key for wins this year will come on the defensive side of the ball, as that will make the offense more prolific in the long haul. The team has already started off well this season, and it should be interesting to see how it all ends up. Coming up for the Bulldogs, they get to play Nicollet high school (12/11), United South Central high school (12/15), Martin Luther/Truman/ Granada-Huntley-East Chain High School (12/16), and Maple River High School (12/19). A team that is headlined by only two seniors and a batch of juniors, head coach Melissa Oachs has an experienced bunch. The two seniors that are going to lead this team are Taryn Clayton and Kennedy Strauss. The girls’ next games are against Nicollet (12/11), Belle Plaine (12/12), United South Central (12/15), and Martin Luther (12/18). The girls will have to learn from their seniors and all grow together to create positive results.

“I think Jordan and maybe Luke have some interest in playing college at a smaller school, but I’m not really sure about that yet.” Meanwhile, the girl Giants carries a rather youthful lineup on the court. Senior guard Mckayla Stowell is the lone senior for the Giants, on a team that rosters five juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen. Freshmen Acy Adamzak and Shaelynn Samora hope to earn some minutes on the court this season and look to be mainstays for this program in years
to come. With the youth of this lineup, the Giants could be a dangerous team in coming years. The girls’ basketball team begins play this week with a pair of non-conference games against Maple River and Lake CrystalWellcome Memorial before beginning conference play on the 18th in a matchup against Mayer Lutheran. On the mat, the Giant’s Head Wrestling Coach Scott Wilson also carries a very young team. Wilson’s team consists of four seventh-graders, an eighth grader, five freshmen, ten sophomores, two juniors and five seniors.
A fairly large team for a smaller school, the Giants have five wrestlers competing at the 106 level, two at 113, two at 120, four at 126, three at 132, three at 139, two at 145, one at 160, one at 170, two at 182, one at 195 and one heavyweight wrestler at 220 in senior Joe Abrahamson. Like the girls’ basketball team, the Giants’ wrestlers hope that they can have success this season, but also carry that youth into success for years to come. With twenty wrestlers who are underclassmen, the Giants look to be solid for at least the next few seasons while building these young guns into veterans.
