Mankato West winter sports ready to roll in 2015-16
KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer Winter sports have started to high schools in the southern Minnesota area. Particularly, Mankato West High School has eight athletic teams gearing up for the winter. Boys and Girls Alpine Skiing, Boys and Girls Basketball, Gymnastics, Boy and Girls Hockey, Boys swim and dive and Wrestling are all underway for the Scarlets. The Boys basketball team, coached by Tom Boone, is looking forward to a great season. Led by seniors Jake Dale, Hunter Frericks, Cole Hunstad and junior Jake Makela, the Scarlets are facing an exciting season. Coach Boone knows the boys have many games to play before reaching the big tournaments but they do have goals. “We want to compete for the Big 9 Conference,” Boone said. “ And Section 2AAA titles.” The Scarlets have 26 regular season games to play before any section play. Their competitors come from all areas of Southern Minnesota, including Northfield High School, who they play first on Nov. 24. The Mankato West
Photo by SPX Sports team will also face Owatonna, Winona, Rochester Century, Red Wing, Rochester Mayo, Albert Lea, Marshall, Worthington, Austin Faribault, Rochester John Marshall, Mankato East and New Ulm. All teams will face Mankato West twice except for Marshall, Worthington and New Ulm. The Scarlets have many players to turn to for support. All members of the team this year are juniors and seniors. Adding to the leaders of Dale Frericks, Hunstad and Makela are juniors Trey Burmeister, Tommy Yokiel, Dawson Coo-
per and Noah Boone. Other seniors for the Scarlet squad are Luke Kolars, Erik Zielske and Brennan Corbett. Last season the boys were able to achieve a respectable 17-6 record in the Big Nine Conference and 20-7 overall on the season. Dale led all Scarlet scorers last season with 16.7 points per game followed by Makela with 9.7 points per game. Dale also led in rebounds with 7.5 per game. Red Wing high school gave the Scarlets the most trouble last season. Accounting for two of their six conference
losses. Mankato West lost 4966 in their first matchup and 45-61 in their second. Their other season losses came at the hands of Owatonna, Rochester Mayo, Marshall, Mankato East and Rochester John Marshall. The Scarlets made it to the Section 2AAA playoffs last season. Their first round game was Feb. 24. They played on their home court and defeated Willmar high school 82-65. Mankato West then took on Mankato East in the second round Feb. 28 at Gustavus Adolphus College. The Scarlets lost by one point, 61-60
and were out of the playoffs with no chance of going to the State Tournament held in Minneapolis. This season coach Boone is excited for all of their match ups. However, Boone says the team is definitely looking forward to the Worthington Trojan Holiday Tournament and the section tournament. The Scarlet girls basketball team is looking for an equally successful season. Coached by Julia Battern, the team plays their first game Thursday, Dec. 3 against Owatonna. The girls will be looking to attain a better record this year. Last year the Scarlets went 9-13 in Big Nine conference play and 10-16 overall. They ranked ninth in the conference behind Rochester John Marshall, Rochester Mayo, Winona, Rochester Century, Owatonna, Northfield, Red Wing and Austin. However, Mankato East, Albert Lea and Faribault were all below the Scarlets. In the 2014-2015 season junior Lexi Schoper led all Scarlet scorers with 498 points and also recorded 182 rebounds. This time around Mankato West will need that and more from her. The Scarlets second leading scorer, Jen Larsen was a senior last season so they will be looking to other players to fill her spot. Sarah Buryska is going

Photo by SPX Sports into her senior year for the Scarlets and tallied 226 points last year. Coach Battern will need Buryska to play at that level again if they want more wins on the record. The Scarlets, who are also coached by Dave Shoen, Dianne Johns and Eric Enenson, lost big last season against Rochester John Marshall, Hutchinson, Northfield, Marshall and Austin. However,
seven of the 16 Scarlet losses were by less than 10 points. If the girls can power through and stay on top early in the games they could see more wins this season. The Mankato West team will play their last regular season game Feb. 26 against Northfield High School. The section tournament will begin in early March and if they play their cards right the Scar-
lets could end up at the State Tournament in Minneapolis. Another athletic team looking for success this winter is the Scarlet boys and girls Alpine Skiing team. This sport isn’t one you see everyday at Midwest high schools, but Mankato West is lucky. The team is able to practice at Mount Kato, located west of the high school; the student athletes are able to
practice at the facility because of its 19 trails and 55 acres. The Scarlet girls on the team this year are lone senior Greta Schwickert, juniors Dana Bohks and Lauren Colway, sophomores Briggs Carlson, Lindsey Sievers and Shanalyn Just and freshman Hailey Kopischke and Kathryn Nelson. There is one representative from each grade for the Scarlet boys skiers. Senior Truman Rice, junior Tyler Defor, sophomore Jaidan Rollings and freshman Nick Bohlke are all racing towards success in the boy’s category. Aaron Rolling, Lori Barbeau and Scott Carlson also coach the 12 Scarlet alpine skiers. Last season the Mankato West girl’s team made it to the state tournament but did not win and none of their skiers won top spots. They began practice on Nov. 9 and the Scarlets are able to participate in 16 skiing contests. Sections for the team begin Jan. 25 and if the Scarlets compete well they can make it to the State Tournament beginning Feb. 10 at Giant Ridge located in Biwabik, Minn. The Mankato West team participates in the conference will East Ridge, Mound
Westonka, Crystal Valley Area, Rochester Century, St. Paul Highland Park and Lakes Area. The Mankato west alpine skiing team meets and practices with the Mankato East team. They had their first meeting of the season Nov. 6. The Scarlets gymnastics team at Mankato West is also looking for a positive season. The all-girls team is coached by Alyssa Ciatti and assisted by Lindsay Rothschiller. The team includes middle school students as well as high school students. The leading seniors this season are Jackie Downs and Miranda DeAtley, followed by juniors Chelsea Schaffer and Mikaela Sellner, sophomore Laura Hankins, freshman Kate Brinkert, Kristen Lageson and Maddie Wolf, 8th graders Morgan Wendt and Taryn Sellner and 7th graders Grace Perschbacher and Indya Campbell. Other teams in the Big Nine gymnastic conference are Rochester Mayo, Rochester John Marshall, Rochester Century, Austin, Northfield, Owatonna, Winona/Cotter, Red Wing, Faribault and Mankato East/Loyola.

Cleveland Clippers basketball looking forward to season
KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The Cleveland high school Clippers are gearing up for the boys and girls basketball seasons. Both teams are looking to win big this season. The boys have already played multiple games. Dan Fredrickson is the head coach this year for the Clippers and Joe Remiger and Lon Voss assist him. The Clippers are in the Valley Conference with Alden-Conger, Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, Madelia, Mankato Loyola, T/ML/ GHEC, Nicollet, St. Clair, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial and Martin County West. Last season the boys struggled on the court, posting an overall record of 7-16 and 2-8 in conference play. Their two wins in the Valley Conference sent them to seventh place overall just above Nicollet and below St. Clair, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, Martin County West, Madelia, T/ML/GHEC and Alden-Conger. Some good wins for the Clippers last season came against Immanuel Lutheran, the MN Academy for the Deaf, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, Glenville-Emmons, Alden Conger and Nicollet.

Piotter all have a chance to lead the Clippers on and off the court this season. The juniors on the squad this year are Travis Robb, Condy Conroy, Brandon Seitz, Jaiden Zishka and Adam Kun-
kel. The majority of the Clipper’s varsity squad is made up of sophomores; Austin Plonsky, Carter Kopet, Brady Omtvedt, Payton Remiger, Mitch McCabe, Sam Kaderlik and
Evan Koppelman all look to see court action this season. The Clippers will play 27 games this season. Several non-conference games include Immanuel Lutheran, Martin County West, Medford, Bethlehem Academy, Minnesota Academy for the Deaf, Le Sueur-Henderson, South Metro and Hope Academy. The Clippers will also participate in a Valley Conference Showcase Feb. 1-6. Cleveland will host the showcase. Cleveland will play their first few Valley Conference games against Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, T/ML/GHEC and Nicollet. Depending on how the season goes for the Clippers they could make it to the state tournament. However, they’ll have to make it past all the teams hoping for a championship in the 2A division. The Section 2A Tournament starts Feb. 15 for the Valley Conference. The Cleveland girl’s basketball team is also ready for an exciting season. The Clippers are coached this year by Jason Thompson and assisted by Kris Holicky. The girl’s Valley Conference is a little different than the boys. Martin Luther and Granada Huntley East Chain are also going added into the mix.

WEST continued from A3 The Scarlets will have their first meet Thursday Dec. 3 against Rochester Century, Rochester John Marshall and Rochester Mayo. Throughout the season they will also face Austin, Owatonna, Watertown-Mayer Invite, Northfield, New Prague, Mankato East/Loyola, Blue Earth Area and Faribult. After the regular season meets they will go to the Big Nine Conference meet in early Feb. Depending on how the Scarlets perform in the Section 2A tournament in mid Feb. will determine if they will be state bound or not. The gymnastics State Tournament is held Feb. 19-20 at the University of Minnesota. Hockey practice is well underway for the Scarlet boys and girls hockey teams. The boys are coached are Curtis Doell and assisted by Danny Heath, Nate Olsen and Zach Blasing. The Scarlet boys are coming off a fantastic season, finishing first in the Big Nine conference with a 15-2 record and 18-6-2 overall. They were led last year by senior Grayson Gavin with 43 goals, followed by fellow senior Austin Langworthy with 31. Because their
two leading scorers are gone, coach Doell will be looking to new players to step up. After the first game of the 2015-2016 season senior Tyler Loe already had four goals. Juniors Jimmy Miller and Kyle Looft led the game with 2 assists each. The Scarlets beat Austin 5-2 in their first regular season game. The Scarlet boys have 24 games left of the regular season and will look to make it farther in the Section 1A tournament than last year. In the 2014-2015 season the boys won their first section game against Albert Lea in Mankato but then fell to Northfield High School in Rochester, which led to the end of their season. Other players to watch for this year on the Scarlets squad are seniors Willie Meyer, Brandon Pahl, Gabe Langworthy, Nick Spiess, Ben Heichel, and Jarrid Nickels. Some up and coming juniors are Cain Simms, Hunter Snell, Alex Hale and Jackson Peterson. The boys play their next few games against Faribault, Mankato East/Loyola and New Prague. The Scarlet girls hockey
Photo by SPX Sports team are equally pumped up for their season. Head coach Tom Villagomez has high hopes and lots of confidence in his squad. “Our motto is practice like we have never won,” Villagomez said. “Play the game like we have never lost.” There are several goals the coaches and girls have this year. Playing well in the conference and making it to the
state tournament are the big ones. Last season the Scarlets ended with a 3-24-1 record. They’ve already matched their wins from last year as they currently sit in 4th place in the conference with a 3-3 record. The key returners this year for Mankato West are sophomore Courtney Bloemke, who led all scorers, then seniors

Cassie Rigdon, Mackenzie Hays, Marissa Swenson and Hannah Holt. The captains for the Scarlets this year are goalie Maggie Cusey and Swenson. Assistant captains are Hays and Holt. So far this season Bloemke is leading again in goals with nine, along with four assists. Assistant coaches for the Scarlet girls are Kent Hays, Callie Looft and TJ Dunleavy. They will look to make it farther in the section tournament than they did last year, being beaten in the first round by Rochester Mayo. Coach Villagomez says the girls are also looking forward to participating in the Austin Tournament over winter break. Boys swim and dive is also starting their new season. The Scarlets have a huge roster this year with 34 athletes. Head coach Andy Viker has plenty of work to do but is assisted by Laura Dauffenbach and Ross Wempen. The boys had a great season last year, even being top contenders for the Big Nine

Waseca winter sports starting up for 2015-16 season
KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer Hockey is starting at Waseca high school. Chris Storey coaches the boy’s team. The Waseca players are also accompanied by student athletes from Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown. AJ Kiekenapp, Allen Anderson and Brad Dushaw assist Storey. The Bluejays boys hockey are also in the Big South conference but there are several different teams; Marshall, LSHSPTCUC, New Ulm, Fairmont, Luverne, Redwood Valley, Windom Area and Worthington. The Bluejay boys have played one game so far this season, the lost 2-7 against Rochester Century. Last season the Bluejays made it just above .500 with a 13-12-1 record. They finished fifth in the conference tying with Redwood Valley and trailing Luverne, New Ulm, Le Sueur-Henderson and Marshall. The boys have never made it to a state tournament but have played hard in the section tournament. Last year the Bluejays lost to New Ulm in the first round 0-7. The leading scorer from
last season with 29 points was Cody Ulfers and he graduated. JP Eykn was the leading assister with 26 but he also graduated. The Bluejays also lost their lead goalkeeper, Zak Wiechert, who posted a .877 save percentage. However, there are plenty of other Bluejay players that can step up. Seniors Richard Volkmer, Collin Volkman, Thomas Stroda, Nate Nordquist and John McNair III; juniors Andrew Weber, Cole Morris, Spencer Heitkamp, Dawson Harty, Nick Rolling, TJ Sommers, Chet Miller and Justin Dahnert; and sophomores Brett Attenberger, Andrew Weller, Nick Huebl and Jackson Priebe round out the roster. So far this year Volkmer is the leading scorer and Heitkeamp leads in assists. The Bluejays have 25 regular season games to play. Some non-conference matchups are against Rochester Century, St. Paul Highland Park, Waconia, Faribault, Mankato East/Loyola, Richfield, and La Crescent. The Bluejays will have to beat out top teams Redwood Valley and Le Sueur-Henderson to make it far in the section tournament. The Bluejays girl’s hockey team also co-ops with Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown. The girl’s season is well underway as they’ve already played six games, recording two wins, three losses and
one tie. They suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Mankato West then they won against Minnehaha United, tied Albert Lea, won against Winona/Cotter and have lost their last two against Litchfield-Dassel-Cokato and Rochester Century. The girls are coached by Kyle Collins and assisted by Dan Sharpsteen and Tara Larson. The Bluejays finished last season with an overall record of 6-18, putting them in sixth place in the conference behind New Ulm, Luverne Marshall, Fairmont and St. Peter. Riley Brown and Hailie Tegmeier, who were both freshmen last year, led all scorers on the team with 8 goals apiece. Waseca graduated their leader in assists, Kennedy Hodgkins. Coach Collins will look to Brown and Tegmeier as well as a few seniors to lead the rest of the team on and off the ice. Other players that can make a difference for the Bluejays are senior captains Anna Hoehn and Maddy Knoll, juniors Katie Johnson, Aly Storjohann, Averi Dahlberg and Cali Pederson, sophomores Danni Dahms and Regan Krampitz, freshmen Sierrah Bakken, Mika Courtney, Clare Miller, Tessa Volkmer and Miranda Watzek and eighth graders Jayde Pederson and Gabriela Armstrong. For stats this year through the first six games Tegmeier leads with four goals, fol-
lowed by Pederson with four and Hoehn with three. Brown leads in assists with seven, then Hoehn with four and Knoll with two. Goalkeeper Dahms has a .902 save percentage. The next few matchups for the Bluejays are against Hutchinson, Worthington, St. Peter, Luverne and New Ulm. If the Bluejays do well in the section tournament in early Feb. they could end up at the state tournament in late Feb. at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul. Waseca also has a wrestling team ready for a successful season. Zach Hall is the head coach and Jake Janike assists him. The Bluejay wrestlers are also in the Big South Conference but there are a few different teams. Pipestone Area, Windom/Mountain Lake and Fairmont/Martin County West all join the Bluejays in the conference. The wrestlers on the squad this year are seventh graders Mason Gehloff, Luke Osweiler and Brody Wirtz, eighth graders Darian Garcia and Blake Wendland, lone freshman Beau Milbrett, sophomores Dayton Deutsch, Justin Sampson, Nolan Frye and Levi Kuschel, juniors Ryan Berg, Noah Schmidt, Adam Kankhe, Dylan Spencer, Avery Emmans, Chel Mattson, Lucas Maxon, Jack Milbrett and Sergio Garcia and seniors Jackson Kilian and Cy Kuschel. The Bluejays first wrestling meet is against New Ulm and Fairmont/County West.
Then they will square up with WEM/JWP and LeSueur-Henderson. There are also a handful of invitationals that the Bluejays will participate in this season including the Kasson Mantorville Invitational, the Maple River Invite, the Plainview Invitational and the Hayfield Invitational. The last team for Waseca winter sports is the gymnastics team. The Bluejay gymnasts have a major theme this year. “To reach your goals, you must grab with both hands,” Scott Young, head coach of the Bluejay gymnastics said. The Bluejays also have a number of goals they hope to achieve together throughout the season. “We want to be in the top five at sections,” Young said. “And break 135 as a team score and qualify girls for the state meet.” There are many key athletes that could represent Waseca at the state tournament in Feb. Some key returners for Waseca are junior Samantha Petry who competes in the vault, bar and all around, freshman Hannah Petry who competes all around, beam and floor, senior Michaela Groll who competes in floor and vault, sophomore Shelby Wolff who competes in vault and bream and sophomore Cecilia McNair who competes all around, vault, floors and bars.

CLEVELAND continued from A3 “The Cleveland girl’s basketball team is also ready for an exciting season. The Clippers are coached this year by Jason Thompson and assisted by Kris Holicky.” This season coach Thompson is hoping for a strong performance from all of his player’s despite some missing key factors. “We are a young team lacking some height,” Thompson said. “We will count on our quickness and athleticism to compete each night.” The Clippers and coach Thompson also have overall goals they would like to achieve throughout the season. “The goal for the season is to improve each day,” Thompson said. “And be a better teammate and team at the end of the season than we were at the beginning of the season.” Last season was tough for the Clippers. They went 0-12 in conference play and 2-19 overall. With no conference wins they found themselves in last place when the section tournament came around. The Clippers played Sleep Eye St. Mary’s in the first round of the Section 2A Tournament but were unsuccessful with a blowout loss 26-63.

both saw “extensive minutes” last year and will again this season. Coach Thompson also says the Clippers have a “good
group of underclassmen” that will need to work hard and “step up for us this season.” The underclassmen on the team include juniors Brianna
Baker, MaKenzie Baumgartner, Amanda Smith and Cheyenne Kunkel, sophomores Laura Smith, Rachael Kunkel and Lindsey Phillips and freshman Katelyn McCabe, Karna Ziebarth, Joie Weller, Caitlin Brink, Ashley Brandt, Julia McCabe and Christa Phillips. The young Clippers squad has 22 games this season and will also host a Valley Conference Showcase near the end of the regular season. Some non-conference games for the girls include Hendricks high school, LeSueur-Henderson, Murray County Central, South Metro, Bethlehem Academy and Medford. Coach Thompson hopes the girl’s athleticism will get them through the games, but there aren’t any in particular he’s waiting for. “We look forward to each game,” Thompson said. “There is no one specific game or tournament.”

Consistency is name of the game for New Ulm girls hockey
TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer The New Ulm girls’ hockey team Head Coach Kristin Faber said before the season the Eagles were to “play consistent hockey, strengthen our defensive zone and focus on team chemistry.” The girls are pretty young this season, as they have a group of six players that were on the 14U team last season. The goal is for them all to contribute for the 2015-2016 season. Key starters returning this season according to Faber are as follows: senior forward Brook Schugel, senior forward Brittany Denn, senior forward Sam Guggisberg, senior defenseman Vanessa Anderson, sophomore defenseman Lauren Klein, senior goalie Bailey Landreville and sophomore goalie Karlie Ries. Amongst the youth and inexperience, there are players that will lead this team strongly. Through five games, the Eagles of New Ulm started 4-0-1, with victories over Mankato West. Worthington, Windom Area and St. Peter/ LeSuer-Hend./Tri-City United by a combined score of 345. They tied Fairbult 2-2 in
Photo submitted by New Ulm coaches their second contest of the season. Some key matchups that are left for the Eagles include a December 19 matchup with Litchfield, a January 16 matchup with New Prague and January 23rd they will take on Mound Westonka High School. Through four games tallied, Schugel leads the team in total points with 14, with Denn following close behind with 13. Denn also leads the team in goals scored (7), and Schugel leads in assists (8). Goalies Landreville and Ries have combined for four wins and one tie, as they have only let up five goals in five games. New Ulm also has played outstanding defense to start the

season, and that will only extend their season longer than other teams. Last season the New Ulm girls had their season end in the Class A quarterfinals, losing 5-1 to top ranked Thief River Falls High School. New Ulm has been to seven consecutive state tournaments, and even with the widespread of youth on this year’s squad they should still make a run at their eighth straight appearance. The Eagles look strong to start the season, as team chemistry looks to be already fierce only a few games into the season. The inexperienced girls are learning fast, and that can be attributed to
talented leaders in the upperclassmen and returning players. The key for this season will to keep pounding shots when given that opportunity, and defending the goal as well as they have been early on. This team could be dangerous if they continue to grow at the rate they are together. The six former 14U girls know what winning is like, as they were a part of the 2015 state champion 14U team earlier this year. When winning is already learned, a team can advance in other areas of the game. The six girls from that team are freshman forward Jackie Cowing, freshman forward Ashtyn Wiltscheck,
freshman forward Elle Cooper, freshman defenseman Madeline Gag, eighth-grade defenseman Ally Steffensmeier and sophomore forward Caleigh Heck. Look for New Ulm girls’ hockey to make some more noise this season, as it could be even more than people may expect.

Mankato Loyola looking to return to last years form in 2015-16
COREY YUMAN Staff Writer It was an outstanding year for the Mankato Loyola Crusaders girl’s basketball team. The girls spent the large majority of the season dominating their opponents on their way to a spectacular record. As the season begins and gets underway, these girls are going to be looking to build upon an already great foundation on their road to the end of the year. The girls started off the year in major fashion, winning the first eight games they played. They opened up the season by taking out the Martin Luther Knights by nearly 30 points with a score of 75-

son also ended up being their biggest loss of the season. The Crusaders traveled to Blooming Prairie to face off against the Awesome Blossoms. Blooming Prairie had an amazing game and defeated Mankato Loyola 56-36. Tournament action was good for the Crusaders this year. Their first of the year was the St. Claire Tournament, which they won with relative ease. Their first round game came against the Jackson County Central Huskies who they handled easily, winning the game 78-49. Their semi
final match against the United South Central Rebels was their toughest of the tourney, but the Crusaders prevailed. Mankato Loyola walked away with the victory after a 75-70 victory in overtime. The finals put the girls back into dominating mode. The Crusaders played the Tri-County Titans and won the tournament after a 71-38 thrashing. Their second tournament of the year was the Valley Showcase. The Crusaders powered through and defeated three teams on their way to the victory. The Crusad-
ers pounced St. Clair 79-56, Granada-Huntley-East Chain 66-43, and in the finals Martin County West in a low scoring affair 46-42. The girls had a few great win streaks throughout the year, their best being a 10game win streak that bled into the Class A - Section 2 girls basketball tournament. The first game of the tournament they played a familiar foe that they opened the season against in Martin Luther. The Crusaders made easy work of them in their highest scoring game of the year when they won 96-66. Their second round match came against United South Central in what was another easy win. The semi finals saw a Mankato vs. Heron Lake-Okabena where the Crusaders knocked them out 62-45. The Springfield Tigers would put an end to their spectacular season however. The finals was incredibly tightly contested, and saw Loyola lose in their most narrow of margins on the year. The Crusaders lost by a single point with a score of 54-53 putting an end to their season. The girls are going to be back in action on December 1, and you can expect them to be playing with a chip on their shoulders as they attempt to make it back to the same spot there were the year prior!

Photo by SPX Sports championship title. Other goals that coach Viker has for his swimmers are to be a regular season section championship contender and well as state qualifiers. He also wants to see the Scarlets finish as the top public school in the regular season
and move on the state meet in Class A. Key returners for the Scarlets squad are sophomore Henry Simpson, junior Hayden Zeigler, senior Luke Ambrose, freshman Dan Egli, junior Thomas Fitzloff and top diver, senior Jake Jancoski.
Practice for the swimmers and divers starts Nov. 30 and they will be able to compete starting Dec. 10. Other schools in their conference are Austin, Winona, Owatonna, Rochester Century, Rochester John Marshall, Rochester Mayo, Albert Lea,
Mankato East/Loyola, Faribault and Red Wing. Coach Viker has a meet at Rochester Century on his radar as Mankato West has beat them in “100+ consecutive dual meets” and also a meet against Mankato East that Viker says they “always” look forward to. Last but not least, the Scarlet wrestling team is ready for their season to begin. Dustin Buttell coaches the squad this year and is excited to see what the boys can do. “The 2015-2016 Mankato West wrestling season provides excitement and anticipation for success,” Buttell said. “With senior leaders accompanied by multiple up and coming underclassmen.” Senior leaders for the team this year are Tyler Kopp, Jaeger Moser and Josiah Dahlgren. There is one lone junior standout, Ethan Rademacher. Underclassmen to watch are sophomore and state qualifier Zachary Jakes, sophomore Josh Block, sophomore Dustin Mueller, sophomore Rylan Moser, sophomore Simone Koenigs and eighth grader Charlie Pickell.
“The Big Nine is a very tough conference,” Buttell said. “Each big 9 dual will require a full team effort to be competitive with such good teams.” The first goal for the Scarlets is the section tournament. The boys are in section 2AA and the tournament starts in mid Feb. “2AA is one of the best ‘AA’ sections in the state. Tournament time will be very exciting at always.” Some non-conference teams that the Scarlets will face are Redwood-River Valley, Waseca, WEM/JWP/ Glencoe-Lester Prairie, St. Peter, Medford, Saint Clair/ Loyola, Tri-City United and Minnetonka. The Scarlets start their regular season duals in Dec. Assistant coaches for the team are Drew Hood, Nick Yenser and Tim Wussow.

Mankato East winter sports set to go in 2015-16 ERIC KRIESEL Staff Writer The Mankato East gymnastics team came into the season looking very strong as they are led by Lauren Kloss, Leah Shields and Emily Altenberg. The Cougars were able to send Kloss to state last season and they have hopes of sending a few more faces there this season as well. They have some new faces on the team that will be trying to make names for themselves in Josie Bornhardt, Kalia Alstad, and Lillie McDermott.
The Cougar Wrestling team is hoping to continue to improve off of last season’s successes. They will be led by three seniors which include Logan Swanson, Brandon Parish, and Eric Jaster, all who won broke 15 match victories last season. Kloss will was able to place 4th at state as a sophomore and he hopes to return this year. Sheng Haley brings a lot of excitement to the Cougar squad as a new transfer who was able to capture 30 wins last season while wrestling in Oklahoma. The Cougar men hope to build off of their very suc-
cessful basketball campaign of last year, which saw them make it all the way to the state tournament. Despite losing some key players off last year’s team the coach still has confidence in his team’s ability to compete in the very strong Big 9 Conference. The team has a lot of seniors including Sam Ahrens, Krisean Coffee, CJ Ayers and Ben Schwartz. Sophomore Damani Hayes will also look to make an impact on the team and their success this season despite his youth. Despite a disappointing record last season and a very tough schedule heading into this year the Cougar women remain optimistic to improve and compete to win several more games this year with a team that gained a lot of varsity experience last year. Junior Shayla Karge is a returning starter who was an All Big 9 player last season and averaged a double-double to go along with 47 blocked shots. Senior Taylor Kuechle will provide much needed leadership and is the team’s best defender who used her sticky fingers to snag 50 steals last year. Freshman Natalie Schisel will continue to be a player to keep an eye after starting last season at point guard as an 8th grader she will look to continue to grow in that position again this year. Despite losing several key players last season Head Coach Nate Fuller is not worried about the changing of
Photos by SPX Sports the guard going on with the team. They still have a solid core of players from last year coming back in Hannah Shank and Taylor Kanstrup. There is also plenty of excitement around freshman Goaltender Haley Stockman and Forward Maddie Davis. The Cougars are a very young hockey team that will be heavily tested against its tough Big 9 opponents. They do have some senior leader-
ship in forward Judd Schulz. Forward Hunter Johnson headlines a strong junior class for the Cougar team and will look to provide a lot of points for this team that is in need of some goal scorers. In the net for the Cougars you will find some youth in sophomore Jack Cusey who will be given the opportunity to grow at the varsity level this year for the Cougars.

Waseca basketball ready to stay successful
KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The Waseca high school Bluejays have several winter athletic teams ready to take charge. Bluejay students can participate in boys and girls basketball, boys and girls hockey, gymnastics and wrestling. Waseca is apart of the Big South Conference, which includes Windom Area, Worthington, Jackson County Central, Luverne, Marshall, New Ulm, Pipestone Area, Redwood Valley, Saint James Area and St. Peter. The boy’s basketball team has their season well underway, starting off 3-0 with huge wins against Tri-City United, Hutchinson and Worthington. Todd Dufault is the head coach for the Bluejays and Monte Dufault, Jon Kaiser and John Conway assist him. In previous seasons the Bluejays have seen success. In the 2013-2014 season the boys finished number one in the Big South with a 22-2 record and last year they finished third overall with a 16-3 record. The leading scorer for the Bluejays last season was junior Nick Dufault, and in his senior season this year coach Dufault knows he can reach higher. “Nick joined the 1,000
point club last year,” coach Dufault said. “And barring injury, will become the all time leading scorer at Waseca High School.” Along with Dufault’s personal scoring goal, the team has numerous other dreams for the season ahead. “Play together, get better everyday, compete hard every night,” Coach Dufault said. “Compete for conference and section championship and be the best we can be.” The Bluejays also have a team theme for the season: Play hard, play smart and play together. Along side senior Dufault are two returning starters and two returning varsity contributors. Junior Jake Guse and senior Elijah Carter both saw success with the team last season. Senior Dakota Williamson and junior Kaleb Nelson will see more action this year as they have been moved to starting positions. Dufault has been named all-conference for the past three years and Guse was named all-conference honorable mention last season. Other players that will be able to help the Bluejays to a season of success are juniors Noah Patterson, Cole Streich, Cyrus Frye, Cody Hoehn and Eric Maas; sophomores Andrew Kaiser, Adam Schumacher and Jack Vetsch and last but not least lone freshman Malik Willingham. This year the Bluejays will play 26 regular season

games before the Section 2AAA Tournament. Some non-conference games the Bluejays will play are against Bell Plaine, Hutchinson, TriCity United, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, Browerville-Eagle Valley, Blue Earth Area, St. Croix Lutheran, Duluth East Owatonna, Waconia, Byron, Mankato East and Stewartville. In particular, coach Dufault is excited for the Owatonna Federate Tournament over winter break where the Bluejays will get to play Duluth East Milwaukee West and Owatonna. Coach Dufault is also looking forward to playing three teams who made it to the state tournament last year, Waconia, Mankato East and St. Croix Lutheran. At the Section 2AAA Tournament last season the Bluejays won big against St. Peter by a score of 76-41. Heading into the second game the boys were hopeful but came up short against New Richland-Hartland-Ellendal 59-50. With the loss their season was over. If the Bluejays can continue their winning steak they may make it to the section tournament and maybe even state. Joan Conway, head coach for the Waseca girl’s basketball team, is also looking for success and teamwork this season. “We will be challenged playing a difficult schedule,” Conway said. “It’s what we need to do to be playing to our full potential in February
and March.” This year the Bluejays played their first game against a tough section opponent, Worthington. Waseca came out on top with a 66-44 win. Up next for the Bluejays are a few non-conference games against Rochester Lourdes, New Richland-H-E-G, Saint James Area and Stewartville. Last season the girls finished fourth in the conference with a 19-5 record behind Marshall, Redwood Valley and Fairmont. They saw much success in the section tournament. In the first round the Bluejays defeated Faribault 54-45. Then in the second round they took down Winona 31-25. However, their hope for a state bid was ruined when they lost 24-41 to Kasson-Mantorville. “We experienced true postseason basketball last year for the first time,” Conway said. “And we would love the opportunity to play in those games again.” The Bluejays have lost several key players from last season. Mikayla Rolling, Kirstin Simmons, Katie Tlusty and Sam Hiller all graduated and played huge for the Bluejays in their quest for state. Coach Conway knows players this year have a large job to do. “We are not as deep and lack experience previous teams have had,” Conway said. “We will be extremely young once again this year and will rely on our leadership to improve throughout the season.”
There are six returning varsity players this year for the Bluejays, out of those six only one is a returning starter. There are also six new varsity players for the season. Coach Conway knows the key players on the squad this year are sophomore Taylor Hill who will take over the point guard position, freshman Madison Gehloff and senior Aubrey Highum will be the lead post player and defensive specialist. Other players who can step up for the team are eight graders Gus Boyer and Hannah Potter, freshman Brianna Highum, juniors Emily Karsten, Breanna Karsten, Cheyenne Rosenthal, Melise Baumgarn and Halle Mercier and senior Allison Breck. “I believe we can compete on our side of the Big South Conference,” Conway said. “And I would love to earn the opportunity to play in the conference championship game again.” The Bluejays are definitely looking forward to the Winona State University Holiday Tournament in late Dec. where they will get the chance to square up against Winona and Heritage Christian Academy. The Bluejays are also competing in the Hayfield Invitational in early Jan. where they will try to beat Byron. The last big regular season tournament will be the Breakdown Showcase, coach Conway says the team is looking forward to playing Roseau at Hopkins high school.

Experience to guide Blue Earth Area girls basketball
TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer Head Coach Alan Cue expressed that the biggest item of importance to the Buccaneers’ success is one thing: defense. “We play defense so we can run [on offense],” Cue explained. The Bucs are aiming high entering the season, as they have a team full of experience and some youth sprinkled in. Of the 17 players on the roster, Blue Earth has 14 upperclassmen. The seniors on the team are guard Annaliese Klinkner, guard Anne Franta, forward Shayna Stevermer, guard Karli Olsen, forward Anikka Wilhelmi, guard Taylor Grandgenett, forward Natali Fellows and forward Paige Darrington. The biggest problem Coach Cue is running into this season is dividing up even but productive minutes for all of his players. “There are only so many minutes in a game,” Cue told the Faribault County Register.
Cue believes his team is capable of anything, stating “We hope to be in contention for both a conference and subsection championship.” It can be challenging to keep up with a run-and-gun offense, and with a great defense anything is obtainable. Cue noted the key returners to the team are seniors Paige Darrington, Karli Olsen and Taylor Grandgenett. Olsen was the leading scorer last season, as she racked up 240 points. The two incoming players that could make a big impact this season are Samantha Barslou (junior) and Caitlin Rorman (freshman). Some key matchups during the season for the Blue Earth Area Bucs are against St. Peter high school January 5 and February 5, New Ulm public high school December 4 and January 15, New Richland-H-E-G high school January 19 and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown high school January 12. These girls should be fun to watch if they can click with team chemistry
Photo submitted by Blue Earth Area coaches this season. With enough experience, there is no doubt they should make a run for state. Eight of the top ten girls are returning, making it a tough team to beat. Last season, the Bucs had a team record of 17-9 and were 5-5 in the conference. This season, they are hoping to do even better than that. The girls last season also
were named the 2014-2015 Academic State Champs, as they are not only talented on the basketball court but make it count in the classroom as well. The team combined to have a 3.881 grade point average, placing them as the best mark in Class 2A of the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association’s Team academic contest.

Fairmont kicks off 2015-16 winter sports season
COREY YUMAN Staff Writer Lace up your skates and grab your sticks because hockey season is among us folks! The Fairmont Cardinals boy’s hockey team is ready to get back into action as the season begins, and will hopefully improve on what was a struggling season last year. The boys are coming into this year after suffering a losing season that saw them exit the year with a 5-17-1 record. While it may be a little too much to expect the season woes to change overnight, something that could be built upon in the short run is their margin of loss. The Cardinals lost their 17 games by an average of six goals, and only scored over two goals in one of their losses. It is a glaring weakness that the young squad should be able to cross- correct early in the season with some hard work on the defensive side, and persistence on the offensive side. Long streaks off losses also plagued the boys throughout the year, and is something that if could be avoided this season may help their confidence on a game to game basis. The boys only won back-to-back games on one occasion, otherwise they faced strings of losses that lasted as much as seven games. Making sure that they don’t meet that same fate this season would go a long way in boosting the morale of a team that needed any reason to look up that they could get last year. Tournament action commenced, and the boys were able to compete in the Class A - Section 3 Boys Hockey Tournament, but their involvement was short lived. In the opening round the Cardinals faced off against the Morris/ Benson Area Storm. The Cardinals lost the game, but not without giving one of their grittiest and toughest performances of the year; they lost the game 5-4, but the four goals was the most they scored in any of their losses of the season. The game also went into overtime, so the boys certainly did not end their season without going down with a fight. The boys ended the season with a QRF ranking of 78 and a score of 31.3. Hopefully the wounds that the returning boys experi-
enced doesn’t affect them heading into the new season as they gear up for December 1st when they open the season against the LSHSPTCUC Bulldogs where they will look to start the season off strong. What a season it was for the Fairmont girls basketball team! Last year was an incredible season with many highlights from this young team, and this year they are likely to want to take it to the next level and secure the state championship. The Cardinals are coming
was not as easy as the first round by any means, but the Cardinals still found a way to get the job done. In the end Fairmont defeated Jackson County 56-47. The semifinals ended up being the most tightly contested affair in the tournament for Fairmont as they were pitted against the Martin County West Mavericks. In what was the lowest margin of victory in the four games they played, the Cardinals still managed to get the W over a very good team when they
“It was sheer domination throughout the majority of the tournament, and the girls got started on the right foot from the start when they faced off against the Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Knights. The Cardinals obliterated the Knights from the get go and left the game with a 65-24 win to move on to the next round.” off a 2014-15 season that saw them finish with a record of 22-7, and a year that saw them make State, but came up shy of taking the big championship home. Their season started off in dramatic fashion when they faced off against the Worthington Trojans. The game was tightly contested all the way to the end, and even ended up seeing some overtime action. The Cardinals were able to walk away with the victory as they came out on top in OT action by beating the Trojans 55-41 to start the season off on a high note. While they suffered a few losses early on in the season, they truly finished strong and went on a 12 game winning streak. Among this winning streak was some exceptional play that led them to take home the championship in the Class AA - Section 3 Girls Basketball tournament. It was sheer domination throughout the majority of the tournament, and the girls got started on the right foot from the start when they faced off against the Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Knights. The Cardinals obliterated the Knights from the get go and left the game with a 65-24 win to move on to the next round. The next round saw them face the Jackson County Central Huskies. The game
beat the Mavericks 61-54 and secured their spot in the finals. Finals action saw the Cardinals take on the Yellow Medicine East Sting, and Fairmont got right back to their ways of dominating. The game ended with the Cardinals securely taking away the win, and leaving home with the championship when they took down the Sting by a whopping 28 points after they defeated them 73-45. The tournament win helped secure a trip to play in the Minnesota State Class AA Girls Basketball tournament. Their tournament life would be short lived however as they played the opening round against the Dover-Eyota Eagles. The Eagles knocked out the Cardinals right away with a 62-53 win. The silver lining of this loss was that the Eagles eventually went on to win the tournament, so they at least lost to the best team. Expect the returning girls to use this loss as fuel to dominate even more this year, and hopefully make it much farther into the state tournament if they are able to scratch their way back! It was an up and down season for the Fairmont Cardinals girls hockey team. Coming out of a season that saw them win slightly more than they lost, escaping the year with a
just above .500 winning percentage, the girls are looking to build upon last year as the group has their final hurrah together. The girls participated in the Class A - Section 3 girl’s hockey tournament and started it off on a high note. Their first game came up against the Windom Area Eagles where they dominated in the opening round victory. When the final buzzer rang the girls walked away with an 8-1 victory. The celebration wouldn’t last long however, and were eliminated in the next round by the New Ulm Eagles. The Eagles upped the Cardinals with a nine-goal win by defeating Fairmont 10-1. This ended the year, but isn’t a full representation of how their year went. While the girls had a winning season, something that could be improved upon is how much they lost by in their games. Each of their losses came by an average of five points per game, and is something that could immediately be improved upon as they try to build upon last year. In order to do so the team is going with a theme of teamwork this year, and it will take a lot of that in order to fulfill their goals of for the year. “Teamwork…big group of seniors who have played together for five years mixed in with a great group of juniors and underclassmen,” head coach John Korsmo said. In addition to their theme, the girls are going to be at-
tempting to end their long run together on a high note. Being this is the last year this core group will be playing together, the team is heading into the season with these on their mind. “This is it!!! The last hoorah for our senior class and this group as a whole,” Coach Korsmo said when asked if the team has a motto heading into the year. What is important to this team is not how well players do on a person-to-person basis, but how well the team does as a whole. Coach Korsmo did not want to divulge any individual stats, because to his team these things do not matter in the grand scheme of what they are trying to accomplish. “The stat I’d like to share is that we don’t keep stats. No individualism. Wins and Losses and plus/minus are our key stats,” explained coach Krosmo. This is a great mentality to have, and the team has no doubt learned to work as a cohesive unit over five years of play together. The girls are going to be looking to end their high school hockey careers on a high note, and attempt to leave a lasting memory that they can all share for a lifetime. The Fairmont Cardinals boy’s basketball team are ready to lace up their shoes

FAIRMONT continued from A14 ““The stat I’d like to share is that we don’t keep stats. No individualism. Wins and Losses and plus/minus are our key stats,” explained coach Krosmo. ” and hit the courts once again as the 2015-16 season is underway. The boys are back in action after a 2014-15 season that saw them finish the year with an impressive 19-10 record, and are likely hoping to impress even more with a better record this year. Last year started on a down note, as they lost to the Windom Area Eagles in a tight game. The Cardinals fell to the Eagles by just two points when the Eagles ousted them 55-53. It wouldn’t deter the boys though, and they bounced back the very next game with a 25-point victory over the Worthington Trojans. The boys had a spectacular showing in many games, often dominating in their victories. The average margin of points they won their games by was 18.5 points, often being absolutely dominant against opposing defenses. Needless to say the boy’s were an offensive powerhouse, defeating a team by 49 points at one time.
While their exhibition games treated them well, their play in tournament action is something that could be looked at to build upon as the new season commences. Their first tournament action came in the Bethany Lutheran Tournament. They started off the tournament strong with a win over the Minnesota Valley Lutheran Chargers when they defeated them 61-41. The rest of the tournament wouldn’t be so kind to them though. The next night they played the Maple River Eagles and fell to them 50-43. A few days later they suffered another loss to the New Richland-H-E-G Panthers by a score of 74-66. They fared much better in the Class AA - Section 3 Boys Basketball Tournament however, but ended up coming up just shy of taking the tournament victory home. They started off the tournament by absolutely trouncing the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers when they won by their largest mar-
gin by beating them 74-25. They followed up this victory by getting a win over the Lake Crystal - Wellcome Memorial Knights when they beat them 59-50. The semi finals saw them secure yet another victory, this time in a very tightly contested affair. The Cardinals escaped with a two-point victory over the Jackson County Central Huskies when they defeated them 56-54. The victories came to a standstill however once they met up with the Redwood Valley Cardinals. It was the battle of the same bird in the finals and Redwood came out on top by beating Fairmont 53-43 to end the season for them. Coming this close to the championship and fall just shy should be a motivator for Fairmont as they enter this year. With the taste of victory within grasp, expect the returning players to use that experience to attempt to make sure they don’t fall short once again.
LeSueur-Henderson girls basketball rebounding in 2015-16
COREY YUMAN Staff Writer The 2014-15 season was a rough one for the LeSueur-Henderson Giants girl’s basketball team. After a season where they had a record of 4-22 most is hoping that it can only look up from here. They’ll be looking to rebound, and bounce back as they continue to grow as a group. Things started off good enough for the Giants. The girls opened up their season with two wins. The first came up against the Maple River Eagles. LeSueur-Henderson pounced on the Maple River and defeated them 54-34. A few days later the Giants narrowly knocked off the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights with a score
of 62-59. They suffered their first loss in game three but bounced back with a win in their fourth game. With a record of 3-1, things started to go downhill from there. The rest of the season the girls had a record of 1-21, ending the season with a 13-game losing streak. Perhaps the roughest part of their schedule was any away game, as they lost every time they hit the road to play an away game. While these things would deter most, the Giants head coach Ryan Graff feels like there is reason to be excited. “I believe this years team has more talent top to bottom than we have had in the last few years. Keys to us having success this season will be more mental than physical. Belief in ourselves and each other is something we need to do,” coach Graff

New Ulm Cathedral basketball set up for success in 2015
KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer New Ulm Cathedral High School Greyhounds are one of nine schools in the conference. The Greyhounds have played two games already and are currently 0-2. The losses have come against St. Clair and Mankato Loyola. The Greyhounds are coached by Alan Woitas and assisted by Bill Moeller and Jon Wescott. Coach Woitas hopes for a great season for his boys and has many goals he would like to see them reach. In particular, the defensive side of the game is important to Woitas. “I would like to continue to be one of the better defensive teams in the conference,” Woitas said. Along with defense, Woitas knows the Greyhound boys have the potential to compete at a high level every game. “Our goal is to be able to compete each and every night,” Woitas said. “And continue to improve throughout the season.” The team had a successful run last year, posting an overall record of 16-7 and 10-5 in the Tomahawk conference. That conference record gave them third place,
just behind Springfield and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop and above Minnesota Valley Lutheran, Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s, Cedar Mountain-Comfrey, Sleepy Eye, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart and Wabasso. The Greyhounds faced off against Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity in the first round of the Section 2A Tournament but were not able to hold on, losing 58-50. This year however, Coach Woitas knows his players are capable of going farther. “We hope to be playing our best basketball by the time the section tournament starts,” Woitas said. The Greyhounds best basketball can be achieved with the help of some varsity veterans. Seniors Gabe Knowles, James Herzog, Jack Schwartz and Michael Skillings are all in their third year on varsity. “These players have been playing varsity basketball for three years,” Woitas said. “And they will be relied upon to be team leaders in practice and games.” Knowles was one of three leading scorers last season, averaging 11 points per game. Knowles was also the team’s leading rebounder with 6.5 rebounds per game. In the first two games of the regular season, Knowles is averaging 15.0 points and 12.0 rebounds. The other two scoring leaders from last year graduated and therefore, coach Woitas will need Herzog, Schwartz and Skillings to step up.
Other players on the Greyhound varsity roster who have a chance to make a difference are seniors Bryan Kokesch, Ryan Wesselmann, EJ Berdan and Jack Wenner; juniors Ben Schumacher and Tyler Mack; and sophomores Nathan Hauser, Jacob Manderfeld and John Gillis. The Greyhounds will also play some non-conference games this year including Mankato Loyola, Norwood-Young America, Sibley East, T/ML/GHEC and Nicollet. They will play a total of 25 games in the regular season before heading off to the Section 2A Tournament held in mid Feb. If the Greyhounds are successful they will move onto the state tournament held in mid March in Minneapolis. Coach Woitas says the whole team is excited for every game this season, but a few matchups do stand out. “We look forward to all of our Tomahawk Conference games each year,” Woitas said. “The favorites to win the conference would be Minnesota Valley Lutheran, Springfield and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.” The Greyhounds next few games are against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, Cedar Mountain-Comfrey and Wabasso. The Tomahawk girl’s basketball team is also looking forward to a season of triumph. Coached by Dave Wilfahrt and assisted by Tony Haefs, the girls are hoping for
a fun and competitive year ahead. “Our theme for this season is ‘teamwork makes the dream work’,” Wilfahrt said. “We have slight increase in numbers this year and we want to focus on working together to achieve our goals.” Last season was tough for the Greyhounds. The girls finished just below .500 with a 12-13 overall record and 6-10 in the conference. Taking the conference title was Cedar Mountain-Comfrey then Springfield, followed by Sleepy Eye and Wabasso. The Greyhounds finished in fifth, tying with Minnesota Valley Lutheran and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop. The team has three seniors this year, Leah Krzmarzick, Anna Mohr and Jenessa Rothermeier. Coach Wilfahrt knows these are players he can count on. “They are great leaders on and off the floor,” Wilfahrt said. “And they will be key to our success this season.” In the previous season, seniors Anna Schwarz and Megan Laraway were able to co-lead the team but now it’s time for Krzmarzick, Mohr and Rothermeier to take charge. Krzmarzick was the Greyhounds leading scorer last season with 16 points per game. The Greyhounds played in the first round of the Section 2A Tournament, but like the boys, lost their first matchup. Sleepy Eye took the win by a large margin, 67-29.
Coach Wilfahrt is confident that his team is ready to compete; especially with the depth the Greyhounds have for the season. Juniors McKenna Berdan, Nicole Gangelhoff and Tessa Wenner are all “very athletic” and able to show other teams how well the Greyhounds can play. Other Greyhounds on the squad this season are Rose Hazuka, Jenna Helget and Becca Schwarz. The girls have some non-conference games in their 22 game season including Madelia, St. Clair, Sibley East, Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity, Nicollet and Mankato Loyola. Coach Wilfahrt, like coach Woitas, is excited for all games this season, but a few are his personal favorites. “We are excited to get things started and begin the season hosting Madelia Dec. 1,” Wilfahrt said. “After that we have a big conference game Dec. 4 as we host Cedar Mountain-Comfrey and then a big night for our boys and girls against Wabasso at home.” The girl’s Section 2A Tournament starts a littler sooner than the boy’s, in late February and goes until the first week in March. If the Greyhounds make it to the state tournament they will start playing March 7 in Minneapolis.

Tri-City United set to go for 2015-16 basketball seasons
DREW MEZZANO Staff Writer The Tri- City United Titans girl’s basketball team had a winning record last season going 14-10. Some key players from the team last season were; Joslyn Vargo who averaged 17.1 points per game and scored a total of 274 points. Next is Dani Angileno who averaged 11.1 points per game. Also Emilie Trcka who averaged 6 rebounds per game. Then there is Gabby Robinson who averaged three rebounds per game and finally Sydney Vargo who finished the season with 95 total points. Coach Specht’s key retuning players include: Joslyn Vargo, Emilie Trcka, Gabby Robinson and Sydney Vargo. Dani Angileno who scored 89 points last season has now graduated from Tri- City United. Some player to keep an eye on include: junior Katie Ellingsworth, sophomore Maddie Dull, sophomore
Cami Vargo and sophomore Catie Jindra. Last season, the Titans started the season on a promising note, winning their first five games. The Titans were unable to keep up their early season form as they had a six-game losing streak in the middle of the season.
The Titans were able to carry the momentum into the playoffs, winning their firstround matchup against LeSueur-Henderson, but fell in the next round to St. Peter. The Titans have opened the season a 1-1 record, and they get their chance to defeat St. Peter on January 9, in

Montgomery. Head Coach Eric Specht said, “The biggest challenge we face this upcoming season is our lack of team height and
consistent shooting”. The Tri- City United Titans boy’s basketball were an overall 10-15 on the 20142015 season. Some key players from this season’s team include; Carter Rynda who is a third year starter for the Titans and he was also all conference last year. Then there is Jackson Feddema who is a second year started who is has great ball handling skills, he works hard to improve his game and he is very competitive. Next is Keegan Oaks who is also a third year starter who puts in a lot of time training outside of the basketball season and he has a very high basketball IQ. Sam Ehlers is a third year letter winner who plays extremely unselfish basketball and he does all the little things right while on the court. Finally, is Billy Odenthal who stands at 6 feet 5 inches who plays a great defensive game inside and out. Some players to watch out for this season for the Titans will be; Devon Jacobson who is 6 feet 4 inches tall with some long arms which makes him a great defender. Then there is the 6 foot 8 inch Tim Colwell who is not afraid to play physical when the team needs it. Next is Cade Read-
mond who has become an extremely confident shooter for the Titans which will help out with the offense. Last is Taylor Jackson, he works very hard outside of the season as well and he has become a great outside shooter. When head coach Ben Haugen was asked what the team’s goal is for the overall season he responded with, “Our goal is to compete to win the conference and the section. Overall, our focus is to become a more mentally tough team that will be able to handle any adversity that is thrown our way this year.” The squad will have too stay away from the losing streaks to be successful in the 2015-16 season. The Titans had two, five-game losing streaks during last season. The Titans also exited the section playoffs in the first round last season, falling to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, 60-45.

Knights are looking to build off of 2015-16 seasons
COREY YUMAN Staff Writer Get ready for boys basketball! The season is back in full swing as the Lake Crystal - Wellcome Memorial Knights are ready to take the court and get to action. Coming off a season that saw the boy’s basketball team go 16-11 in the 2014-15 season, the Knights will be working hard to improve on what was already a good season. If they hope to achieve this though it will take one thing, hard work! That is the theme that coach David Eichler is trying to instill in the young men as they gear up for the season. The team’s goals for the year are simple, and that’s to just keep improving. “Our main goal of is to get better everyday, the winning and accolades will follow the hard work,” Coach Eichler said. To get them there, it will take a group effort, but all teams need their standout players to get them there. Coach Eichler noted that senior guard Lane Hemish and junior point guard Blaid Friedrichs as players to keep an eye on as this season progress. Tournament play last season saw the boys come incredibly close to taking home a trophy on multiple occasions, but the squad came up just shy. The Knights came up just one game short of making the Valley Showcase finals, but were ousted by the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Bulldogs in the semi finals. The Knights fell to the Bulldogs 57-49. The Knights participated in the Bethany Lutheran Tournament early in the season. While they lost in the first round to St. Croix Lutheran Crusaders, the Knights managed to walk away with a morale victory by winning out in the consolation bracket. In order to do so the Knights took out the St. Clair Cyclones by a mere two points with a score of 61-59, and lastly the Mankato Loyola Crusaders 63-56. Last year the Knights were able to participate in the Class AA - Section 3 Boys Basketball tournament, but were eliminated in the second round. The Knights were able to knock off the Windom Ea-
gles in the first around. Lake Crystal - Wellcome Memorial defeated Windom by a score of 53-45. The Knights met their match however in the next round when they faced off against the Fairmont Cardinals. The Cardinals knocked out the Knights by topping them with a score of 59-50, thus ending the season for the Knights. However, all of that is in the past, and 2015-16 is a brand new season! The Knights will be hard at work all season to not only improve, but to build upon the progress they made last year. The Lake Crystal - Wellcome Memorial Knights girls basketball team had seen better days. The girls spent the large majority of the season fighting from underneath, but despite their best effort that they put forth they just couldn’t seem to get over the hump. These girls are going to be doing their best to bounce back, and improve upon a dismal year after learning from their mistakes. The 2014-15 season they went a mere 4-21. They opened up the year in a hard fought game against the Nicollet Raiders. The game was tightly contested but the Knights fell to the Raiders 4547. The Knights opened the season on a three game losing streak before picking up their first win against the Cleveland Clippers. The Knights defeated the Clippers quite easily by a score of 52-18. That was perhaps the last
Photo by SPX Sports of their highpoints for the year, as the team proceeded to lose 13 of their next 15 games of the season. They would end up participating in the Valley Showcase in February, but their involvement was short lived. The Knights would once again be matched up against Cleveland, and once again they walked away with a victory. This time it wasn’t has handily as their first time, but still won 67-45 nonetheless. They would play the Madelia Blackhawks but fall to them by the narrow margin of five points with a final score
of 56-51. Their participation in the Class AA - Section 3 girls basketball tournament was short lived, and the Knights saw a first round exit. Their matchup came against Fairmont Cardinals proved to be a tough one, and they suffered their biggest loss of the year. The Cardinals walked away with a 65-24 victory. The silver lining of this for the Knights was that Fairmont went on to win the whole tournament, so they at least lost to the best the tournament had to offer. The girls are going to be
looking to do their best to improve upon the year, especially in their away record. The Knights went only 1-11 on their away record, which is something that if improved upon would go a long way in helping the girls get back on track. Expect the girls to use their woes to their advantage as they are done licking their wounds and should be ready and anxious to get back out on the court on December 1st and start their road to redemption.

Sleepy Eye Indians lookings to improve in 2015-16
DREW MEZZANO Staff Writer
The Mankato Loyola Boy’s basketball team is coming off a spectacular 2014-15 season that seen the team finish with record of 20-8. As the boys get ready to hit the courts again, expect them to try and build on the incredible play they had, while also trying to translate some of that excellence in exhibition play into tournament wins. “We were 20-8 last year and tied for the Valley Conf. Championship with St. Clair,” Coach Tim Anderson said. Last year the team seen a lot of success against other teams on their way to that record, even recording a ten game win streak as they went into the Valley Showcase. The streak came to a screeching halt though, as they lost to Lake Crystal - Wellcome Memorial 62-56. The Crusaders held an incredible home record at 10-1, and played exceptionally well on their section where they held a record of 16-1. The boys were certainly a force to be reckoned with. They finished out the year with a QRF ranking of 16, and score of 97.9. The team is going to attempt to have some of the same success that they did last year, but it will have to be done with a lot of new names. “We will have a lot of new faces this year. We lost 12 se-
niors including 4 starters from last year,” Coach Anderson explained. Noah Rajtar is the lone starter from last year that is set to return, so it will be up to him to help guide and lead this fresh team throughout the season. He’ll get some experience help from Jackson Dehen and Patrick Doyle as they will be returning, and this time with expanded roles from last year. While change can be scary, Coach Anderson is optimistic. “We will have a number of players that will be able to step up and help our team have success this year,” said Coach Anderson. The team is looking to have a scrappy attitude as they play opposing teams. The Crusaders are going to attempt and take advantage of their speed and shooting abilities to gain an advantage over defenses. “We will be a short but quick team. We have some very good shooters that will help our offense look good. One of our saying is look like choir boys but play like junkyard dogs. We need to be tough mentally and physically at both ends of the floor,” said Coach Anderson. Thier season is currently underway, and as of writing they have split their opening games and are sitting on a re-
Photo by SPX Sports cord of 1-1.
The Sleepy Eye Indians boy’s basketball team was an overall 5-22 in the 20142015 season. This will only be head coach Shane Laffen’s second season as and he and the rest of the team will look to improve in the areas of rebounding and trying to not turn over the ball as much this season. Some of the top returning players from the ’14-’15 Tomahawks will include; Saul Ibarra who had 29 points last season and three rebounds. Coach Laffen said that Ibarra is an excellent all around basketball player. Ben Jakobitz who scored 22 points last season and averaged five steals a game. There is Isaiah Krumbach who had 19 points throughout last season and he is a very versatile player that can be played in many different situations. Ben Laffen averaged two assists per game last season, which is fitting for him being a great play making guard. The Tomahawks will also get back Caleb Christensen
who scored 28 points on the year and he has transformed himself into a top three shooter on the team. Next is guard Sam Tessmer, who averaged about four points a game last season but he is an extremely hard worker and should put up some higher numbers this season. Finally is Avery Stevens who was only able to gather four points in the 2014-2015 season but Coach Laffen said he is a very versatile player and he can help out the team in many ways. When Coach Laffen was asked what some of the strengths and weaknesses of the team are heading into the start of the 20152016 season he said: “Our strengths are that the team is returning everyone with the exception of one starter from last season. Also the team has several players that are capable of scoring points in the double digits”. “The team’s weaknesses that we need to work on are rebounding and turnovers. These two areas were very problematic for us last season. Last year, our team only averaged 10 assists per game, so we need to bring those numbers up”.

J-W-P looking to build in all areas this winter season ERIC KRIESEL Staff Writer Kirsten Prunty will be stepping in as head coach of the girl’s Bulldog basketball program and will provide coaching experience having had coached at Nicollet, Mankato West and also with the MSU Women’s team as an assistant. Despite losing Kennedy Straus, who averaged over 20 points and six rebounds a game last season, this team is very experienced and has eight seniors on their roster led by Hannah Olson. Olson will have to at least replicate if not improve upon her season last year when she averaged 19.5 pts/game. They will have a strong one-two punch at the guard position with Kaley Anderson bringing an aggressive, never back down mentality to the starting lineup, and then with Kaitlin Stankey coming off the bench with a more calm and methodical
Adam Rients also has some successful experience at the varsity wrestling level as the only returning wrestler on the team who was able to win their own respective section last year as a freshman. Despite the youth of this team that contains three key sophomores as well as freshman Wyatt Storch who captured 23 wins last season as an eighth grader the team is still confident in its improvements and hopes to compete to win the Gopher Conference and set up for a lot of future success. The Bulldog boy’s basketball team lost nine seniors from last season including all five starters, so this season will provide an opportunity for new players to step up in key roles they have not been in yet. Sophomore Brielle Cords has also turned some heads this offseason as a long post player that also is a pure shooter so she could provide a match-up nightmare for opponents if she can get on the court with the older girls on the team. St. Peter basketball teams are ready for action
TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer The St. Peter Saints girls’ basketball team has a team that is very spread out in age levels, as the team consists of nine seniors, one junior, four sophomores and one freshman. It is a good mix of youth and experience, and the team expects to compete with the best of the rest this season. Bob Southworth is entering his sixth season as Head Coach. Last season, the Saints finished 23-6, and 7-5 in the Big South Conference. They won the sub-section and lost the section final to Norwood-Young America. Coming into this season, the Saints lost some size and key players. “We will maybe have to play a little different style of basketball,” Southworth said. Southworth went on to say the conference will be tough, but his Saints should be right in the thick of things. Key players this season will consist of Emily Carpenter, Maggie Anderson, Olivia McCabe, Sid Welp, Alyssa Lokensgard, Kelli Hanson, Ella Wiebusch, Jaide Fonde, Kia Williams, Meagan Roach and Zoey Bartlet. Carpenter is a senior guard, and shoots well from the three-point line. Last season, she shot 38 percent and she also plays great defense. “We will rely on her again this season to score from the outside and provide solid defense,” Southworth said. Anderson is another senior guard whom the team will rely on as well. She shot 38 percent from the floor last season, and is a great floor general. “Maggie sees the floor really well and gets people the ball where they can do something with it,” Southworth stated. Sophomore center McCabe brings a toughness to the team with the aggressive way she plays. Lokensgard is a senior center on the team that will be counted on this season for rebounding, scoring and defense to help the team. Southworth also added “She is able to score in different ways in the open court and the half court.” Southworth also was excited to see what the sophomore center Wiebusch can do. “She will bring us another player that is able to play full court and apply a lot of pres-
Photo by SPX Sports sure to the opposing [team].” The team consists of a lot of different skill sets, and that can only translate to further success on the court. The team will go as far as the underclassmen can learn
on the run, as the squad does have the experience to help them along the way. Going into the season however, it will be an experiment to see what works best for the team. “Over the course of the
season, we will have to figure out what style fits us best and what our strengths will be,” Southworth noted. The team will face a tough opponent to start their season in Glencoe-Silver Lake on
December 1st. With one last word on the Saints this season, Southworth proclaimed this: “I am really excited for this season to begin to find out what our identity will be. These girls work very hard and also play very hard. There will be a number of girls that we will need to step up into increased roles and that is what is most exciting for a coach to watch throughout the course of a season.” The St. Peter boys’ basketball team looks solid this season, as they have a roster containing only upperclassmen and a lot of guys that have experience. That will go a long way, as Head Coach Sean Keating has two words to describe the theme for this year’s team: “No Regrets.” Keating did not miss a beat when talking about the attainable goals for this year’s squad, as he went on to say the Saints will be competing for a conference and section championship for the 20152016 season. 11 of the 16 on the current roster are seniors, so this would be the year to go all-out for the Saints. Some notable returning players to mention this season are seniors Colton Lusty and Aaron Leeb. Lusty- the 6’5” forward –averaged 11 points per game last season, while also averaging five rebounds. Leeb- the 6’1” guard –aver-

The squad is a complete team, as there is not just one player that stands out above the rest. The incoming players to watch are seniors Jack Olinger, Noah Hildebrandt and Joey More. The 6’ Olinger is a guard who can shoot the ball with the best of the rest. 6’2” Hildebrandt is a forward who is a fantastic defender and has continually improved his shot. The 5’6” guard in More is a fantastic defender, as stated by Keating. “He makes great hustle plays, and has a chance to have over 100 steals this season.” The team has great height, great chemistry, and great talent for a year to remember to happen. The team has started
2-0 to begin the year, with a monstrous victory to begin the season over Medford 8223. The next game was also won by double digits, this time coming against United South Central. “We only graduated one senior last year,” Keating explained. “We have our team back and they have put in a lot of work in the offseason.” Keating also went on to say “We expect to compete with anyone in our section and be in the final four teams of our section come playoff time.” The Saints are very confident about their chances this season, and should be a treat to watch. The Saints of St. Peter have key matchups against Waseca December 1st and January 8th, Fairmont December 18th and Janu-
ary 29th, Jordan December 8th and Maple River January 19th. With a deep, talented roster, Keating’s St. Peter Saints look destined for something special this season. Anything less would be considered a failure it appears. “My program is built upon the values of trust, respect, servant leadership, work ethic, toughness and being the ultimate teammate,” coach Keating stated. “Our Motto is ‘responsible to your job, accountable to your team.’” Keating has had four plus years in assistant coaching, and has translated all he has learned to the head coaching job. He also has experience as a player for Augsburg College on his resume as well.
LESUEURHENDERSON continued from A15 said. Believing in themselves will be an essential component if they hope to bounce back. Something that can be looked at as plus is that the team only lost one player due to graduation, the majority of the core remains in tact. With the poor season comes experience, and the old saying goes that one can learn more from failing than they can from succeeding outright. “Losing an all conference point guard is always tough to fill so that will be a key area as well. I think we have 2-3 girls that can fill that void and run the team on the floor,” explained Coach Graff. Among the returning players are four senior start-

ers guard Carlie Brandt, guard Sam Winter, forward Mandy Doerr, and forward Breanna Kroehler. Coach Graff also noted that senior forward Quinn Hynes-Marquette, junior guard Courtney Lucht, and sophomore Shaelynn Samora as players that people should keep an eye on as this season progresses. “We have high expectations as we get ready for practice and I know I am very excited to get back into the gym,” said Coach Graff. By the time this is in your hands the wait will be well over, and the season will have started as on December 1st the Giants will play the Maple River Eagles.
