Midwestern has embarked on a new fund-raising initiative aimed at enhancing
academic programs and making capital improvements for the College of Science and Mathematics (COSM). This effort is spearheaded by The Priddy Foundation of Wichita Falls as a challenge gift. The Priddy Foundation will donate $500,000 to the College of Science and Mathematics if MSU can match it by raising an additional $500,000 by 2009 – making a total of $1 million available as an endowment to assist the COSM as it continues to build, grow, and thrive. Once we reach the goal, the faculty and students of COSM will benefit from the scholarships and research projects funded with interest earnings from the endowment. If you would like to talk to someone about this unique opportunity for MSU’s College of Science and
ART GALLERY To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the University Art Gallery, MSU will recognize the love and support Juanita and Ralph Harvey provided the gallery and art department through the years. The late Juanita Harvey enjoyed taking art classes at Midwestern. Before his death in July Ralph, recognizing Juanita’s love of art, established the Juanita Harvey Art Excellence award to benefit MSU students. HIGHER MAC on mission to build model NCAA Division II athletic program
The Mustangs Athletic Club, the booster club for the MSU Athletics Department, is out to make the 2008-09 year something special. And to make this happen we need your help. The upcoming year is important for the future of MSU Athletics and its current student athletes, coaches, and staff. We are at a point of tremendous opportunity that will allow the Mustangs to truly represent our university, the North Texas region, and this community in a positive fashion. Our student-athletes graduate at a higher percentage than the regular student body, spend more hours in community service, and have been successful on the field or court in all our sports in the Lone Star Conference.

This past year has seen us move forward with the beginning stage of the D.L. Ligon Coliseum renovation, some of the first major gifts for athletics, and a good year by all of our 11 NCAA sports. This is just the beginning in becoming the model program in Division II Athletics. In order to make a difference in this community, we have to take a major step forward in funding our entire program. If you have already renewed your membership, thank you. If you haven’t yet joined the Mustangs Athletic Club, please help us represent our university with your membership. Our future is now, and the student-athletes, coaches, and staff are excited about what we can accomplish. We can’t do it without you.

JOHNSON
named women’s basketball coach
Noel Johnson became the eighth women’s basketball coach in Midwestern State history on April 7 when she was announced to lead the program by Athletic Director Charlie Carr. Johnson takes over the reins of the program after Shannon Burks, the winningest coach in MSU women’s basketball history, resigned to accept a non-coaching position outside of intercollegiate athletics in Northwest Arkansas. “Noel brings us knowledge of Texas woman’s basketball, a passion and understanding of the championship experience, and most importantly, a genuine concern for the student-athletes everywhere she has worked,” Carr said. “We look forward to her leading our women’s basketball teams to similar championship experiences.” Johnson enjoyed a distinguished playing career at Texas Tech University from 1991-95 where she helped the Red Raiders to four-straight Southwest Conference championships, four NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearances and a national championship in 1993. “I’ve always known of Midwestern as being an institution of class and integrity,” Johnson said. “I feel like I’m coming home. This is a great opportunity for me to make a difference as a first-time head coach.” A native of West Texas, Johnson is originally from Kelton and was born in nearby Shamrock. An accomplished prep athlete, she earned two letters at Nazareth High School where she helped the Swiftettes to two Class 1A state championships. After completing her prep career, Johnson went on to earn AllSouthwest Conference honors on three occasions and all-region honors at Texas Tech.
In addition to her success at Tech, Johnson is still the Southwest Conference’s most prolific 3-point shooter and was the firstever recipient of the Jeannine McHaney Award, an honor given by Texas Tech to the female athlete who most exemplifies classroom excellence, courage on the court, and a commitment to excellence. Johnson was named to the Texas Tech Hall of Honor in 2005. While humbled by her successes, Johnson is committed to passing on the skills necessary to help her players win on the court and in life. “I feel I can bring the same work ethic and know the sacrifice it takes to be successful as a student-athlete,” she said. She spent last season as an assistant coach at the University of North Texas, where the Mean Green finished with a 14-18 mark including a 70-60 win over Midwestern State on Nov. 23 in Denton. Prior to that, Johnson served nine seasons as associate head coach at Texas State University under Suzanne Fox where she was the recruiting coordinator. She played integral role in the recruitment of 11 All-Southland Conference players, a player of the year, a freshman of the year and two Southland newcomers of the year. The Bobcats claimed a Southland Conference title in 2003 during her tenure in San Marcos. Johnson graduated from Texas Tech University in 1995 with a bachelor’s in exercise and sports science and a minor in English. She then earned her master’s degree at Texas State in Education in 2002.

Stonecipher started a school-record 238 career contests over four years, collected the Lone Star Conference and school record for career runs batted in with 172. Stonecipher also finished her career as MSU’s career leader in hits (270), at bats (736), batting average (.367), on base percentage (.427), doubles (46), total bases (396), walks (69) and times hit by pitch (17). Sophomore pitcher Katie Petersen was the LSC North Pitcher of the Year, collecting a 26-9 record with a 1.28 era and four saves. She struckout 203 batters in 224 innings pitched and limited opposing hitters to a miniscule .211 batting average. Junior centerfielder Miranda Bishop, who chalked up a school record seven triples on the year, was honored on the NCAA II South Central Region All-Tournament team after going 4-for-9 with two doubles, two stolen bases and scoring four of MSU’s six runs in the tourney.
The Mustangs made a strong run at the regular season’s end for their second team berth in the NCAA II South/South Central Super Regional, but the strong finish wasn’t enough to overcome a flat start last fall. MSU placed second at the Red River Intercollegiate and the UCO/KickingBird Classic. At KickingBird, the Mustangs tied host Central Oklahoma after regulation, only to fall in the team playoff. The Mustangs finished fifth at the Lone Star Conference Championships, three spots better than they did in their inaugural season last year, shooting the fifth-best round in the 54hole tournament with a 285 in their final round of the season.
The MSU men’s basketball team had its ups and downs during the 2007-08 season, finishing 13-13 overall and tied for fifth in the Lone Star Conference South at 5-7. But the season wasn’t without its excitement.

Cowboys hope Polk's determination can make him an NFL receiver Lori Dann
E
Everything about Daniel Polk’s football background suggests he’s a long shot to make the Dallas Cowboys’ roster. First there’s the small school — Midwestern State. Then there’s the experience. Polk started only one full season at the Division II school in Wichita Falls, although he still managed to set 14 school records. And, of course, there’s the switch to wide receiver. Before the rookie minicamp, the dual-threat quarterback said he hadn’t run pass routes since his junior season at Dallas South Oak Cliff High School. Add all of those factors with the limited roster spots available, and the chances of making the NFL might appear to be, in Polk’s own unflinching words, “slim to none.” But all he wants is a chance, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was happy to give it to him after his solid performance at the team’s Dallas Day workouts. “I think I’m good enough to play in the NFL, and I want to prove it,” Polk said. “I know it’s going to be a lot of work, but I’m no stranger to hard work.” When Polk wants something, in fact, he’s willing to work around the clock to get it. That's exactly what he did at Midwestern State when he decided to major in respiratory care. He was the first varsity athlete ever to tackle the program’s rigid demands, including clinicals that required three 12-hour shifts per week at a local hospital.
Fort Worth Star-Telegram Staff Writer (Reprinted with permission of the Fort Worth Star Telegram)
“I was a little bit skeptical when I heard he wanted to come into the program because I didn't see how he could do it with all the demands of football and the travel involved,” said Patrick Helton, clinical chair of the respiratory care program at Midwestern. “But he's been able to juggle everything pretty well. It requires a lot of motivation to do what he's done.”
Balancing act Former Midwestern offensive coordinator Glenn Thomas vividly recalls his first reaction when Polk told him about his plans to major in respiratory care. “I thought it was absurd,” he said. “We were obviously extremely worried about how much of a toll it would take on him.” The most difficult aspect was structuring Polk’s schedule during clinical weeks to fit in all of his academic and athletic responsibilities. As a quarterback, that was quite a challenge. While most respiratory care students do their clinical training during the day, Polk was allowed to work his shift at night. Still, it took some trial and error for the coaching staff to fit in all the meetings and film study their quarterback needed. “At one point, we were meeting at 6 a.m. a couple of mornings a week to try to catch up,” Thomas said. “But he was pretty much spent by then, and I was pretty worthless at that hour. Eventually, we came up with a schedule that would work.” The schedule provided little sleep and no breaks for Polk, even during football
season, but he never complained. He would spend two weeks doing clinicals, then two more doing regular classwork. During clinicals, he worked at a local hospital from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the early part of the week, slept until about noon, then reported for meetings, film work, and practice at 1 p.m. That lasted until about 5:30 p.m., giving him just enough time to shower and get back to the hospital for another 12-hour shift. With an 18-hour course load, Polk said non-clinical weeks were sometimes just as difficult, with four tests scheduled each week. “There were times when I was pretty exhausted,” Polk admitted. “One time I got sick and I had three tests to study for and a big game coming up. It was the worst week of my life. I think I threw up seven times at practice.” But Polk, who eventually wants to be a physician’s assistant, never considered quitting. Now he’s a year away from completing the program and earning his degree, although he hopes a stint with the Cowboys will delay those plans for a while.
During the week’s minicamp, Polk concentrated solely on his complex new playbook, although academics weren’t far from his mind. He returned to Wichita Falls to take three finals in three days. He’s hoping he can duplicate the 3.0 grade-point average he posted during the fall. “I just want to have as many options in life as I can,” he said. “I want to have something else to put in my backpack just in case football doesn't work out. And I really like working in the hospital because you get a chance to help people every day.”
Academics first Sports have always been important to Polk, who was a captain and four-year starting catcher for South Oak Cliff’s baseball team as well as a two-year starter in basketball. But even as a young athlete, he never lost sight of his priorities. “He knew he had to make good grades to play sports, so he was always studying when he wasn’t playing,” said his mother,
D ANIEL POLK
Arlene Polk. “He never really hung out with his buddies. He’d come home from practice, do his homework, and go to bed.” Polk was just as successful in the classroom as he was on the athletic fields. He made the National Honor Society, graduated in the top 10 percent of his class, and immediately focused on earning his college degree. “He’s always been dedicated to everything he does,” Arlene Polk said. “If he says he’s going to do something, he will.”
Put me in, coach Polk didn’t truly become the centerpiece of Midwestern State’s offense until his senior season, but he stepped in to lead the Mustangs to some of their biggest victories in school history during his first three years. Perhaps the biggest came after starting quarterback Rahsaan Bell’s season-ending injury, when Polk led Midwestern State to a 29-19 win over Abilene Christian, sending the Mustangs to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time. He earned conference freshman of the year honors that season despite starting only three games. When he finally got the full-time job as a senior, Polk put up unbelievable numbers and became the school’s first Division II All-American. He was the only quarterback in any division to pass for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards last season, and he finished fourth in the nation with 322.6 yards of total offense. “He made me a good coach, no doubt about that,” said Thomas, who is now an offensive quality control coach with the Atlanta Falcons. “We put up all these crazy numbers and people think I’m a guru, but he’s the guy who takes a third-and-4 play and runs 50 yards for a touchdown. He’s unbelievable.” But is he good enough to make it in the NFL? “Athletically, there’s no doubt he’s comparable to anybody at any level,” Thomas said of the 6-foot-1, 202-pound Polk. “He's got the size, speed, and agility. The question is how long it’s going to take to mold him into a receiver, because that doesn’t happen overnight. These guys have been running routes 15 years and he’s been doing it five months. “But I certainly wouldn't bet against him.”

The Spirit of 1922 lives on……In August of 1995, this 1947 Dodge fire truck was purchased from the Chillicothe Fire Department. Because of mechanical problems during the past few years, it was not driveable. Thanks to Larry Slack (’70), of Slack Ford Mercury Chrysler, it was refurbished and is now in better condition than the day it was purchased.
