Whatever it is - if you love it, chances are other students do too. If you want to join in the conversation use #get2knowthemount on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Let’s show the world what it means to be a student at the Mount. Follow @MSVU_Halifax for all your Mount news.

Volunteer Opportunity Join our Buddy Program to help a new international student settle into their new life in Canada and the Mount. Our incoming international students are already engaged in the conversation and would like to hear about your perspective on what it’s like to be a student here at the Mount. As their Canadian Buddy, you will be communicating with the incoming student before they arrive in Canada, they may ask you anything from what the weather is like in Halifax to how to get a cellphone to how to adjust to campus life here at the Mount. And in return, you will receive. This volunteer opportunity is counted towards the Co-Curricular Recognition Program (CCRP).

The 2015 #LoveIsLove campaign is a celebration of love and acceptance, is ready to take off! Over the course of the next few months we will be holding various photo shoots as well as taking candid shots around the Mount community, engaging students and asking what love is to you. We hope you’ll take a moment to join in this special campaign and help us build a more compassionate campus! Come help us spread the love! Beautiful Illusions Melanie Colosimo & Charley Young 10 Jan 2015 – 8 Mar 2015 Beautiful Illusions presents works in graphic media by two young Nova Scotian artists. Colosimo’s principal practice is drawing; Young favours drawing and indexical techniques, such as casting and monoprinting. For both, materials and process are key determinants of the meaning of their works. Themes of memory, transitory states and trace imagery pervade their art. The title of the exhibition evokes the realism with which each artist renders subjects such as the façade of a wooden shack, a range of mountain peaks, or the intricate patterning of twisted wires in a chain-link fence. Virtuosic mimicry is not the only point of such images, however; “failures” such as smudges and anomalies of scale disrupt the illusions and remind viewers of the usually compliant but sometimes faltering hands and memories upon which the illusions depend. OPENING RECEPTION Saturday, 17 January, 2 to 4pm Opens jointly with Prospect 17: Joanna Close ARTIST’S TALK & PUBLIC DRAWING EVENT Saturday, 7 February, 2 to 4pm. Visitors are invited to take part in a collaborative drawing project during Colosimo’s artist’s talk ARTIST’S TALK & WORKSHOP Saturday, 28 February, 2 to 4pm Following a discussion of her work, Young will lead a workshop exploring textures through the art of frottage

Prospect 17: Joanna Close 13 Dec 2014 – 15 Feb 2015 This is the 17th of the Prospect exhibitions, which showcase the works of selected Nova Scotian artists during the early stages of their careers. Joanna Close presents a series of hooked rugs depicting buildings from a former family farm in New Brunswick, now given over to an industrial gravel quarry. These hand-dyed wool rugs commemorate maritime farming heritage. The imprecision of the hooking technique used to create the rugs mimics the dynamism of memory. Joanna Close is a textile artist and illustrator based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. She holds a BFA from NSCAD University, 2004 and an MA in Textile and Fibre Art from the Winchester School of Art, United Kingdom, 2006. She is a regular part-time instruction at NSCAD University in the Textiles Department. RECEPTION Saturday, 17 January 2015, from 2pm to 4pm. Meet the artist and enjoy light refreshments as you view these beautifully crafted works.

Celebrate Freedom of Expression! Freedom to Read Week: February 22-28, 2015 In Canada, the Book and Periodical Council (BPC) celebrates Freedom to Read Week, February 22-28, 2015. The Mount Library supports and promotes Freedom to Read Week. What is Freedom to Read Week? Freedom to Read Week is an annual event when “libraries, schools, organizations, community hubs and passionate individuals from all across Canada… join together to celebrate and defend their freedom to read” (Book and Periodical Council, 2015). Why is it important? Freedom to Read Week highlights the importance of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which states that everyone has fundamental freedoms, including “2(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication” (Constitution Act, 1982). More specifically, Freedom to Read Week affirms the rights of individuals to read what they want, free from censorship by others. It also opposes efforts to suppress writing and silence writers. Globally, limits to free expression threaten freedom and democracy, and Freedom to Read Week shines a light not only on efforts to censor, but also on efforts to defend free speech. What are publication challenges? Publication challenges are attempts to limit or prevent public access to publications which are deemed – by individuals or groups - inappropriate. Common grounds include: obscenity, violence, offensive language, or sexual content. Have you read these challenged Canadian books? • The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwook (violence, sexual content) • The Wars by Timothy Findley (sexual content, violence) • The Diviners by Margaret Laurence (offensive language, sexual content) • Barometer Rising by Hugh MacLennan (vulgarity, offensive language) • Lives of Girls and Women by Alice Munroe (sexual content) • The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz by Mordecai Richler (vulgarity, sexual innuendo) • The Young in One Another’s Arms by Jane Rule (seized and investigated for obscenity) View a detailed list of more books and magazines that have been challenged in Canada.
