IN THE 19TH CENTURY, cousins Johann Martin and Professor Dr Louis Häusser met at Weingut Buhl in Deidesheim to discuss politics and other matters of interest. Perhaps due to the immediate environment and the local wines, they decided to purchase a vineyard themselves. This laid the cornerstone for today’s Christmann estate, which acquired its current name when the founder’s granddaughter Henriette Häusser married Eduard Christmann and gave birth to a son named Arnold, after whom the estate was ultimately christened. Passion and creativity have been with

them from the start, all the while under directorship of the Christmann family. Now in the seventh generation, the name still stands for top wines that take a back seat to none. Wines that exude a sense of charisma and inspire excitement; noble varieties planted in top sites, cultivated in a near-to-nature fashion, these are the hallmarks of the A.Christmann estate. For generations the family has maintained their passion and energy for producing pure and outstanding wines. They have never confused satisfaction with contentment, constantly striving for greater expressiveness.

Clüsserath in Tritteheim on the Mosel has been owned and farmed by the family. Today, Eva Clüsserath-Wittmann is following in the footsteps of her father Ansgar, and the two of them manage the estate together. After completing her oenological studies in Geisenheim in 2001, she worked simultaneously at the estate and for a regional branch of Germany’s VDP (Prädikat Wine Estates) before deciding to focus her energy solely on the estate in Trittenheim. Like

her husband, Phillip Wittmann of the eponymous estate in Westhofen/ Rheinhessen, she is a member of Germany’s new generation of growers who are committed to traditional and ecologically sound viticultural practices, as well as developing forward-thinking techniques. Both in the vineyard and the cellar, she brings forth the special characteristics of the Mosel’s unique geology. Her personal style articulates itself in expressing the typicity of the estate’s slate soils and steep vineyard sites, creating wines of great finesse and elegance.

IN 2011, RUI ROBREDO

Madeira returned to the same winery where he worked his first harvest in 1987, in a small winery located in the village of Vermiosa in the highest vineyards in Portugal. Through painstaking effort, he rehabilitated the property

because he believed that this region’s winemaking heritage is one of the best hidden treasures in Portuguese wine. Old vines of native grape varieties have perfectly adapted to the rugged climate caused by the high altitude, along with the soil, where

many veins of quartz run through the schist and granite. Through Beyra wines, Madeira seeks to express the Beira Interior’s true identity: wines of great complexity resulting from the combination of aromatic intensity, minerality and freshness.

“ We capture the freshness and complexity of our climate, the soil, through our wines" — GÜNTHER BRANDL

THE KAMPTAL VILLAGE of Zöbing, with some 700 inhabitants, has been home to our estate for more than sixty years, located right at the point where the river Kamp leaves the narrow valley of the Waldviertel (coming out of the woods, so to speak), and flows south. The nearby Heiligenstein and Kogelberg certainly set

a romantic scene, but more importantly provide the soils and elevation ideally suited to cultivation of the vine. During the night, north winds cool the vineyards, while during the day we couldn’t ask for finer sunshine to warm our hillsides and terraces. These aspects, coupled with the calming effect of the nearby river, impart a generosity

OUR COOPERATIVE WAS FOUNDED IN 2012 BY THE merger of two historic companies on the Modena wine scene. The Carpi Winery, which was founded in 1903 and a pioneering example of Agricoltural Cooperation, and the Sorbara Winery, the name that quintessentially identifies Lambrusco DOC. We are a cooperative with over 1,200 grape growers. They include historical wineries that have become avantgarde production sites in more than a century of social and technological evolution. Quality is what we aim for on a daily basis. The reason we welcome grapes from over 2,000 hectares of different vineyards is to select the best raw material and allocate it to our different wines. There is a good Lambrusco for every occasion and for us, people of Emilia, toasting and celebrating is serious business. We want to offer the world a great quality Lambrusco, which is respectful of tradition but also symbols of energy and lightheartedness.

OUR HISTORY

stretches way back, to when time was marked by the passing of the seasons, and the farmworkers of the countryside of Alghero had nothing to rely on but the soil and their own ingenuity.

It is a story that speaks of the ability to trust one another, and of the desire to build something great, without forgetting how much beauty and how much value are hidden away in what surrounds us: endless plains facing out to sea, sheltered by a cove between the Gulf of Alghero and the Bay of Porto Conte. These are fortunate lands, caressed by the wind and kissed by the sun. It is a story that speaks of the precious lessons learned through daily toil. This story,

our story, starts very long ago and lasts all the way to today.

It all began in 1946, in the Nurra area, which had been reclaimed and given to the farmworkers following the Agrarian Reform that was implemented in Sardinia in the immediate post-war period. The locals were blessed with skilled, courageous hands that had the capacity to capture the soul of a part of the island that seems to have been designed for winemaking. And so, in 1959, one hundred of them decided to enter into a co-operative and to found the Cantina Santa Maria la Palma (Santa Maria la Palma Winery).

Today, past and future are being combined seamlessly through the new technologies deployed in every project put

together by the Winery, which can leverage a tradition that has always married innovation to love for the local soil.

700 hectares of land on the estate are under vine, giving rise to a wealth of highly nuanced Sardinian wines, all made with the same passion and dedication as always, while also taking advantage of everything that state-of-theart technology has to offer. The dedication to quality is the thread that runs throughout our history: selecting methods and techniques to produce the finest grapes, enhancing and protecting the soil – all with a view to exceeding our consumers’ expectations and to being worthy inheritors of this noble tradition that we are carrying forward.

Each wine of Corte Sant’Alda comes from a specific vineyard, which was chosen and preferred for the position, the grape varieties, the age and the training system, in order to bring a specific wine to life and ensure a welldefined quality. All the grapes, which are certified organic and Demeter, are handpicked in the optimal moment of ripeness, forcing us to pass more than one time in the same vineyard.

Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts and takes place in 40 hl oak conical vats, where temperature is partially controlled. At the end of this phase, which generally lasts 15 days or, in the case of Amarone, one month, and after racking, the wines are all aged in wood, with the exception of Soave. “ Sedimentary soils and wide temperature-swings between warm days and cool nights provide Landhaus Mayer with the perfect conditions for producing complex wines.”

ESTABLISHED IN 2012 AS A BRAND TO COMPLIMENT Mayer am Pfarrplatz in its restaurants, Landhaus Mayer has rapidly grown to represent some of the best classic varietal expressions of Lower Austria today at a great price point. Sourced from some of the best sites throughout the Weinviertel and Carnuntum, the goal is to find the best expression of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Zweigelt. This selection gives an authentic taste of the namesake varietals of Austria, but also a tremendous value of what this country can offer. Many of the vineyards are from older vines from some of the most traditional villages in both wine-growing areas.

“ We consider winemaking to be an annual metamorphosis: The grapevines grow up from earth, stones, minerals. Vines and grapes flourish under the sun, wind and rain. From these, our wines are finally crafted by hand.” — KATHARINA TINNACHER

THE LACKNER-TINNACHER ESTATE IS NESTLED between vineyards and orchards on a chain of hills in Steinbach near the municipality of Gamlitz. The vine has been cultivated here for centuries; four of the estate’s vineyards were described in detail in the Josephine land register of 1778. Today, Katharina Tinnacher and her family cultivate 27 hectares of vineyard, which thrive at the ideal elevation of 400–500 meters on the most promising steep slopes of Southern Styria. Concentrating on the types best suited to the region, they grow Sauvignon Blanc, Gelber Muskateller, Welschriesling and the “white Burgundian varieties”—Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Katharina places her central focus on the vines, and on a way of working with them that remains close to nature, including

“ Our techniques focus on developing quality in the vineyard: particular attention to pruning, canopy-management, crop-thinning and highly selective harvesting by hand enable us to put wines in the bottle that reflect the living soul of the sunny Wachau.” — KARL LAGLER

THE LAGLER FAMILY HAS lived on this beautiful estate in the Rote Tor Gasse since 1789. In the late 1970s, the Laglers stopped restricting their activities to solely grape-growing and began working their fruit into wine instead of selling it off.

Almost from the start, Karl Lagler began producing

top-class, fruit-driven wines from his vineyards situated in the finest sites that the western Wachau town of Spitz has to offer: Steinborz, Tausendeimerberg and Burgberg, where old vines are tended with natural farming techniques and other measures focused upon quality and sustainability, yielding excellent results.

All of Lagler’s work in the vineyard, including the harvest, is done by hand. Today the Laglers are known as one of the most charismatic families in the Wachau, and their wines command respect at the finest restaurants worldwide.

IT IS AS IF SEPP MANTLER AND FAMILY WERE literally rooted to the soil. Their commitment to the vineyard, the growth of the vines and the cellar is an annual rebirth driven by the challenge of weather, soil, and passion. The Mantlerhof winery has been an active farm for over 600 years, when it under the ownership of the Styrian Admont Monastery. It is here, nestled directly below the terraces that rise above Gedersdorf, that the Mantlerhof winery has forged a path cultivating Roter Veltliner, Neuburger and expressing some of the most historic and qualitative sites of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling primarily on löss soils. THIS TRADITIONAL ESTATE ON THE PFARRPLATZ IN Vienna’s 19th District has been in operation since 1683, vinifying wines that were instrumental in establishing Vienna’s reputation as the city whose very name stands for wine. In 1817, composer Ludwig van Beethoven moved into the first floor flat on the Pfarrplatz and began to compose his legendary Ninth Symphony. In contrast with the German import Beethoven, Mayer’s vineyards are planted to traditional indigenous Austrian grape varieties, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling among them. Their top vineyards are nestled in prime sites on the mineral-laden hills surrounding the capital city. The estate is best known and most renowned for its classic ‘Wiener Gemischter Satz.’ This specialty is made by collectively harvesting Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Rotgipfler and Zierfandler that have grown together in the same vineyard, subsequently pressing and fermenting them together as well. The wine marries the characteristics of several distinctive grape varieties, harmonious in its unique aromas and flavors.

As a farmer you are responsible for a little piece of earth. You have to keep it, or better, you should improve it for the next generation.”

FOR FIVE GENERATIONS — NEARLY 200 YEARS — the Melsheimers have been growing fine Riesling on the steep slopes around the village of Reil in Germany’s famous Mosel River valley. Today Thorsten Melsheimer manages the classic family estate, supported by wife Stefanie, his parents and his three children. Some fifty percent of the vineyard holdings are classified as Steilstlage – the steepest. Very small and intimate, wall-supported vineyards planted in slate soils, certified as a historical cultural landscape; only five percent of the Mosel’s vineyards can claim this distinguished classification. Here they grow exclusively Riesling. The Mosel valley has been famous for this varietal for centuries, and the true aficionado knows that this is most likely its purest expression. Lots of detailed hard work and unquenchable enthusiasm are required for this. Each new vintage is a gift of nature.

RIOJA BORDÓN IS an iconic wine produced by Bodegas Franco-Españolas, one of the great wineries in La Rioja region of Spain. With nearly 125 years of history it occupies a foremost position in the world of winemaking. Throughout its storied history, the winery has hosted a number of dignitaries ranging from Spain’s King Alfonso XIII Ernest Hemingway. Committed to progress and renewal, Bodegas Franco-Españolas is no stranger to evolution and currently embodies the perfect combination

of respect for tradition and technological innovation, thus producing great wines that endorse its long history.

Bodegas Franco-Españolas was founded in 1890 thanks to the golden age that Rioja experienced in the 19th Century, when the French, whose vineyards were agonising under the attack of the phylloxera plague, came to the region in search of replacement vineyards. This marked the beginning of the development of “fine Rioja wines.” All this led to the founding of “Bodegas Franco-Españolas” in 1890

Various DISTILLATE Mezcal

MEZCAL DE LEYENDAS WAS FOUNDED MORE THAN 10 years ago in Mexico City. The driving force behind the brand is the passion and knowledge of the team behind Mezcal de Leyendas and the goal to better educate the public on mezcal.

Over the years, the brand has worked with dozens of mezcal producers to help them become certified by Mexico’s mezcal governing body, the CRM, in order to help them improve their production facilities and ensure the prosperity of these master “mezcaleros.”

Mezcal de Leyendas currently offers five different mezcals from five different regions, made from five unique agave plants. Each producer the brand has partnered with has created a mezcal that is not only special in its quality, but preserves the timehonored manner of production from harvest to distillation.

MEZCAL

Over the last century, five generations of bold and passionate entrepreneurs have crafted spirits following in the footsteps of famous fruit-liquor maker Emile Perrier. The latest to carry out this tradition are even somewhat rebellious. In the 1980’s, Jean-Michel Naud, a trained oenologist and passionate explorer of wines and spirits and sonin-law of Robert Perrier, rediscovered the distillery. Today, with his son Pierre,

they have decided to reignite the flames under the copper pot stills to create a distinguished line of Cognacs.

Under the brand name NAUD – also referred to by the moniker “Noble and Unusual Distillery – the Naud family invites you to share their passion for the art of distillation by revealing these treasured spirits which have been kept secret so long. Built in the 19th century in the Cognac region, the ancient grain mill of Pinthiers,

with its authentic paddle wheel, became the family distillery in 1923. Well-hidden among the greenery and set upon a small island, the old limestone building, which is surrounded by lime and willow trees, is bordered by two arms of the River Seugne, which flows into the River Charente. This outstanding distillery, hidden on its own island, now produces some of the world’s finest Cognacs and NAUD is now ready to share with the world.

OLD MEXICO IS AN artisanal, small batch Tequila, crafted with the highest percentage of 100% Blue Weber Agave.

The ripe Blue Agave picked at the peak of maturity from the fields of Jalisco, Mexico. The most flavorful part of the Agave – the piña – is slow cooked for several days in traditional Brick and Stone Ovens. The juice is then slowly extracted from the cooked Agave using traditional Molino mills.

The agave is then mixed with a small amount of pure cane sugar and slow fermentation for up to 48 hours takes place in traditional open tanks. The fermented juice is distilled twice in single batches using traditional copper pot stills.

Careful attention to artisanal, traditional slow production methods results in an exceptional Tequila in both quality and taste, making it the optimal choice for your next margarita.

DISTILLATE Mezcal

PELOTÓN DE LA MUERTE

is a very clean, well-balanced mezcal that is produced with traditional methods in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca, which is also known as “The World’s Capital of Mezcal.”

The label of Pelotón de la Muerte, which means Brigade of Death, was the flag used by the insurgents during the Mexican Revolution who called themselves “the squadron of death for the

suffering Hidalgo”, who tried to enact revenge for the death of the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the founding father of Mexico’s independence.

While many of the mezcals on the market possess overpowering smokiness that make it difficult to drink more than one cocktail, Pelotón de la Muerte has one of the most balanced and quaffable flavor profiles out there. PELOTÓN
