TASK 2 Analysis of challenges of institutional sustainability Hebbel Am Uffer (HAU)

INTERNAL CHALLENGE Although the flat structure of HAU offers a free communication between art director (AD) and other staff, the challenge is the AD takes many important tasks (On the model for project management, the arrows link to the AD’s role are her jobs). If this person has an emergency, the running of the whole institution would collapse. EXTERNAL CHALLENGES Economical HAU heavily depends on government funding. For the project “Treffpunkte”, Capital cultural Fund (Hauptstadtkulturfonds) was the sponsor and Embassy of the Netherlands Berlin (Koenigreichs der Niederlande) was the supporter. Due to the current critical situation that government funding is decreased, independent finance scheme would be necessary for HAU’s long-term financial sustainability. Alternative approaches could be enable visitor donation, sales of souvenirs in HAU etc.

Environmental The collaboration between HAU and artist are majorly contract based. Which means artists from other countries travel to Berlin with their equipments to put on a show, and they leave after a few shows. This logistic could create huge footprint. It’s paradoxical in a way as artist from different countries enrich the culture for Berlin. In project “Treffpunkte” a Berlin based Japanese artist Yikihiro Taguchi was invited. As HAU locates at Kreuzberg, which is a very diverse community, could it be an approach to involve more local artists with different cultural backgrounds for show so to reduce footprint? Also for HAU cafe, they could sell organic food and drinks, and use fair-trade coffee beans*. MTA 2015 - Echo Wang

Societal Young people in Berlin have more choices and money for leisure time nowadays, while elder people tend to stick to the habit of enjoying traditional theatre. To attract and involve more local people to contemporary art theatre, and find ways to adapt better into the diverse neighbourhood of Kreuzberg, are the challenges for HAU from the societal aspect.

•

Cultural The HAU changes their shows frequently. The diversity and openness culture of Berlin could hinder or promote the culture evolution of HAU. How to deliver the show information to the potential audience in time? What type of image would speak to the audiences from different culture backgrounds? Efficient and effective communication among different layers of culture spheres is the challenge from the cultural aspect.
