elcome to the April/ May edition of Australian Tyre Dealer. There’s been a flurry of announcements in the industry over the past couple of months. Bridgestone reports that it has launched a new tyre into the heavy vehicle market – the Multi Trans M766 – that features a tread compound specifically developed for Australia’s unique logistics challenge. Along with other improvements over its predecessor - including new, wider and deeper tread; improved traction and longer life - the tyre is manufactured using a tough casing making it ideal for Bandag re-treading. The M766 will be sold through Bridgestone’s dealer network nationwide. Read more on Page 10. BFGoodrich has launched its ‘most advanced tyre ever’ with the All-Terrain T/A KO2 tyre. Available now, and with the full range expected to be available over the next few months, the T/A KO2 is, the company says, engineered from its championship off-road motorsports racing technology and offers ‘consumers the confidence to take on the toughest challenges for work or play’. Read more on the All-Terrain T/A KO2 on page 13. Nexen reports it is making a push into the Oceania market through its sports marketing plans. Sponsorship of the AFL team the Geelong Cats as well as the New Zealand rugby team the Chiefs will see the company place advertisements on LED signage, scrolling banners and on static signage around the stadiums of both teams. “As we begin sports marketing in the Oceania market by sponsoring popular sports teams in each country, we are able to reach the public so that we can increase

Meanwhile, classic car owners are in for a treat with some ‘old’ patterns to make a welcome return in the form of the Michelin Vintage tyre range. Featuring Michelin Classic and Historic Competition tyres, the company says Michelin Vintage offers a range of tyres for classic cars which will fit a number of vehicles made between the ’30s and the end of the ’70s. Stuckey Tyre Service in Brunswick, Victoria, will be the first dealer to receive the tyres and you can read more about them on page 14. In other news, Aeolus Tyres has announced that it has launched the PrecisionAce2, its second generation high performance summer tyre, into the market; Hankook has picked up the OE fitment for the Porsche Macan in Europe with its Ventus S1 evo2 SUV pattern, while Toyo’s Proxes R40A is to be fitted to the sTouring and Akari models of the new Mazda CX-3 crossover sports utility vehicle. Michelin launches improved breakdown service

M

ichelin Australia has announced the launch of Michelin Active Assistance - a 24-hours / 7 days a week emergency breakdown service for truck operators nationwide. The nationwide network not only includes Michelin’s premium dealer network, the Michelin Service Centres, it also has access to some 400 truck tyre dealerships throughout Australia. The company says this will ensure every breakdown is closely managed to ensure a timely response. “Michelin Active Assistance is a key part of the service package we provide,” said Mr David Issautier, Commercial Director, Truck, Michelin Australia. “Our fleet management programme includes qualified technicians undertaking regular tyre checks, and offering tyre management expertise to our network. This support, coupled with Michelin Active Assistance will greatly contribute to operational profitability. “Reducing the amount of time a truck spends off the road is key for any fleet operator; this

The Mazda CX-3 sTouring is fitted with Toyo Proxes tyres

Mazda chooses Toyo for crossover SUV M

azda has specified Toyo Proxes R40A tyres as original equipment for the first-ever Mazda CX-3 crossover sports utility vehicle. The tyres are to be fitted to 18-inch wheels on the high spec sTouring and highest spec Akari models. Toyo says the Proxes tyres will reduce cabin noise intrusion while providing class-leading performance for Mazda’s inaugural crossover SUV. Toyo’s flagship tyre, the ultrahigh performance Proxes range complements the CX-3’s newgeneration performance, SKYACTIV technology and Mazda’s KODO ‘Soul Of Motion’ design philosophy. Toyo Tyre & Rubber Australia tyre technical manager Steve Burke said the key to designing tyres to suit the highly anticipated Mazda CX-3 was to reflect the company’s aesthetic and technological focus. “The CX-3’s OE tyre needs to reflect Mazda’s global commitment to innovation and automotive thought leadership,” he said. “The Mazda CX-3 is an ideal vehicle to showcase the class-leading comfort and performance of the Proxes range. “The crossover SUV sub-category is growing rapidly and the launch of the CX-3 has been hotly anticipated by the motoring media and buyers alike. “Being an 18-inch tyre with a 50 aspect, comfort and performance were the top priority. Michelin has provided a new version of its Pilot Sport Cup 2 UHP tyre for the new Audi R8

Pilot Sport Cup 2 option for Audi R8 M ichelin has developed a special version of its Pilot Sport Cup 2 ultra-high performance tyre for the new Audi R8. This tyre will be an optional fitment that can be specified by customers, and can be identified by the RO1 marking on its sidewall.

Michelin says the requirements of Audi were a technological challenge as their engineers sought to combine high levels of dry grip to give outstanding lap times on the track without any compromise in safety on wet roads. Michelin developed the Pilot Sport

Cup 2 to combine the following performance characteristics: • Extremely high levels of grip on dry • Very precise steering response • A good balance between front and rear grip, especially during cornering • Sporty, agile handling which is characterised by a quick reaction time between driver inputs and the car’s response. To obtain these results, Michelin says its designers and engineers embarked on a short but extremely focused development program of just 15 months, testing 770 prototype tyres in the process. The new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres feature tread designs that combine multiple rubber compounds developed in motorsport series such as the World Endurance Championship. There are two different compounds used in the front tyre and three in the rear which ensure the high levels of safety, grip, handling and durability that were specified by Audi. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 will be available in sizes 245/30ZR20 on the front of the Audi and 305/30ZR20 at the rear.

The cost of manual handling injuries in tyre retailing

S

tatistical data from WorkCover Queensland indicates that the workers compensation industry premium rate for a tyre retailing business (currently $2.92 per $100 of wages) is close to three times higher than for a car retailing business ($1.03/$100 of wages) and more than double the rate for a motor vehicle parts and accessories business ($1.44/$100 of wages). Given that WorkCover premiums are based on the whole-ofindustry-segment claims history, these figures highlight significant potential improvements and savings that could be achieved by tyre retail businesses with a greater attention to health and safety. The growing popularity of larger SUV/ four wheel drive type vehicles has brought with it the use of larger tyre and rim combinations and an inevitable increase in the weight of these items. Given that an employee in a tyre shop could conceivably handle a tyre/rim combination up to 150 times a day, the potential for a manual handling injury ought to be obvious. These risks must be acknowledged and acted on to fulfil the obligation under workplace health and safety legislation to ensure, as far as is practicable, the health and safety of all employees. The business must put in place a proper system of handling of tyre/rim combinations and loose tyres and ensure that that system is followed by all employees. Drawing up a Safe Operating Procedure (SOP) would be an excellent way to show that the company has recognised the hazard and has taken positive steps to address it. Furthermore, installing appropriate mechanical/hydraulic devices to aid in the handling of these items would also show a clear appreciation of the legal obligations imposed by the Workplace Health and Safety Act. With a broad enough addressing of this issue by this segment of the industry we ought to see a reduction in the industry rate for tyre retailing and, consequently, the premium charged by WorkCover. The related drop in manual handling injuries would make it a win-win for the industry and its workers.

Australia home to Institute Global Mining Solutions

A

global centre for tyre excellence is opening in Australia with the launch of the Bridgestone Institute Global Mining Solutions (BIGS) at Mt Thorley, outside Newcastle, NSW. A new worldwide research and development hub, BIGS will develop high-quality, total solution packages for the mining industry around the world. “We could have established BIGS anywhere in the world, but Australia’s first-class resources and construction sectors make it an excellent location for us to develop the new technology and new integrated service packages to help reduce operating costs and downtime for our mining, construction and earthmoving clients,” said Tsuyoshi Kamiya, Managing Director, Bridgestone Institute Global Mining Solutions. “Australia has the mining, construction and earthmoving technology, the qualified personnel and the infrastructure to make BIGS a huge success.” Using data and concepts collected from Bridgestone’s global network of tyre production facilities and distributors, the company says that BIGS will not only create the next level of industry-specific tyre technology, it will also act as a training hub to ensure its service solutions can be reproduced in any location around the world based on consistency of quality and expertise within these areas. In the resource and construction industries tyres are vital to production

and safety, but are an on-going cost and maintenance issue. As they can represent a significant component of a customer’s operating costs, it is important to prolong the life of the tyre. To that end, Bridgestone is not just focusing on the tyre but also on improving the quality of support services to ensure a tyre has every opportunity to meet its maximum work-life. “BIGS will not just be looking at the tyres, but at the tyre’s entire lifespan – from design, fitting, maintenance and inspection through to on-site servicing and engineering, rim management, repair, retreading and disposal,” said Mr Kamiya. Reflecting the importance Bridgestone places on BIGS, the site opening was attended by special dignitaries from Bridgestone Japan; Mr Mitsuhira Shimazaki, Vice President and Senior Officer International Tire Business Operations; and Mr Tomohiro Fukuda, Vice President and Officer Specialty Tire Business and CQO, Specialty Tire Business. Established as a subsidiary of Bridgestone Earthmover Tyres, BIGS is located in the Hunter Valley for easy access to the region’s coal mines while still being relatively close to Sydney for international visitors. It is expected BIGS will employ a number of specialists in the coming years, and host dozens of trainees every year. 9

Bridgestone releases breakthrough drive tyre – the Multi Trans M766

T

he Australian heavy vehicle market has a new driving force – the Bridgestone M766 – Australia’s longer lasting drive tyre. The M766 features a breakthrough tread compound specifically designed and developed for Australia’s unique logistics challenge. It also delivers exceptional wear life, with testing showing it outperformed a major premium competitor by as much as 18%. “Australia has unique road conditions that put very particular stresses on truck tyres,” said Andrew Moffatt, Bridgestone Australia Ltd. Managing Director. “We have high-powered trucks pulling long combinations, highways and roads made from rough aggregate and a higher road camber than many other countries – all factors which combine to put tyres under a great deal of stress,” he said. “These are challenges that require Australian solutions, which is why – unlike many of our competitors – Bridgestone invests significant resources to develop new patterns and tread compounding technology specific to our market and our road conditions. “We have conducted extensive testing in the lead up to the release of this tyre and are absolutely confident in the extended wear life that this product provides.”

TECHNOLOGY DESIGNED FOR AUSTRALIAN CONDITIONS The new Bridgestone Multi Trans M766 features a wide range of technology including: • An all-new tread compound designed specifically for Australian road conditions, increasing wear resistance and heat dissipation; • New wider and deeper tread with 21% more tread rubber volume (when compared with Bridgestone’s existing M722 drive tyre) for longer wear life; • New semi-closed shoulder blocks with tie-bar which reduces block deformation, providing additional stiffness to minimise irregular wear and provide longer tyre life; 10

Managing Director Andrew Moffatt and Director of Sales and Marketing Kensuke Kobayashi

• Unique S-shaped sipes which reduce lateral and circumferential block movement resulting in even wear and longer wear life; and • Increase in lateral sipes and tread block edges to provide improved bite into the road resulting in high traction, particularly in the wet. As with all Bridgestone heavy duty tyres, the M766 is manufactured using a tough, durable casing that makes it ideal for Bandag re-treading, further increasing its value and lowering its impact on the environment.

OUTSTANDING WEAR LIFE Bridgestone’s General Manager Technical Field Services Jon Tamblyn said the M766 had been thoroughly tested across a range of Australian customers. “We have run the tyre in a variety of applications with customers across

the country and have recorded very strong and consistent wear life results,” Mr Tamblyn said. “When compared with our major competitors, the M766 delivered up to 18% additional wear life – and that can translate into tens of thousands of extra kilometres and a big saving for the operator.”

INCREASED WET TRACTION Thanks to its supported block pattern, the M766 delivers wet traction that far exceeds its predecessor. In fact, Bridgestone’s testing has shown the new tyre increases wet traction force by a massive 48% when compared with the M722, vastly improving both braking and acceleration performance. The Bridgestone Multi Trans M766 will be sold throughout Bridgestone’s dealer network Australia-wide.

Porsche and Hankook team for OE on new Macan

H

ankook Tyre is continuing its significant inroads into the premium segment of German automobile manufacturers and is now supplying Ultra High Performance (UHP) tyres as original equipment for the new Porsche Macan. This is the first time a model from Porsche is being factory-fitted with Hankook Tyre’s UHP tyres. The pattern chosen is the Ventus S1 evo² SUV, introduced in 2014, providing a tread designed especially for this vehicle category. The Ventus S1 evo² SUV will be fitted in either 18- or 19-inch diameter in mixed tyre sizes: 235/60R18 (front) and 255/55R18 (rear) or 235/55R19 (front) and 255/50R19 (rear). “Our flagship tyre is also outfitted with innovative technologies and sophisticated designer features for high performance SUVs and we are excited that Porsche, another German premium automobile manufacturer, shows its confidence in our products as original equipment”, said Mr. Seung Hwa Suh, Vice Chairman and CEO of Hankook Tire. “Like its little brother from the car segment, the Ventus S1 evo² SUV provides a sporty and direct driving experience combined with safety and comfort, making it another exceptional example of Kontrol Technology, 12

our philosophy of incorporating technology, top performance, and safety in all of our products.” The concept behind the SUV model derived from Hankook Tyre’s UHP-flagship, the Ventus S1 evo², is aimed at drivers of high-performance, dynamic vehicles; drivers who, the company says, demand sports-like performance from their tyres across all parameters without compromising features like comfort or low rolling noise. “With the new Ventus S1 evo² SUV we have developed a UHP tyre that optimally supports the character of sporty and dynamic vehicles like the new Porsche Macan,” said Mr. Sang-ju Lee, Chief Technology Officer of Hankook Tire. Hankook says the Ventus S1 evo² SUV, with its multiple tread radius and double-layer rayon carcass, provides a maximum tread contact area under all conditions impressing not only with outstanding hydroplaning resistance but also with optimum road contact for perfect balance in both wet and dry conditions. Driving control and safety at high speeds are also significantly improved. The tyre’s three-layer block design - with its special staircase arrangement of the outer rib blocks provides an improved contact area as

the tyre wears, ensuring more effective traction performance throughout the entire life cycle of the tyre. The company says the Ventus S1 evo² SUV is equipped with a highly developed, newest generation silica compound with an optimised cross-linking system that improves wet traction, wear characteristics and thermal ageing resistance with the highgrip stirene-polymer formula enabling additionally improved wet properties. A refined cooling system, with surface enlarging fins anchored to the base of the tread grooves and micro-turbulence generating dimples arranged on the outer edges of the shoulder block enable faster heat dissipation for more stable handling characteristics and longer tyre durability. Hankook’s UHP flagship tyre is also equipped with an aerodynamically shaped sidewall that further reduces tyre noise. The Ventus S1 evo² SUV line-up is manufactured primarily in the company’s European state-of-the-art factory in Hungary. longer on asphalt2, allowing offroad enthusiasts to extend their adventures and working professionals to get more use out of the tyre. In addition, the KO2 improves its all-terrain performance with 10 per cent greater traction in the mud3 compared to the previous-generation KO tyre.

KEY FEATURES OF THE KO2 • Tougher Sidewalls: The KO2 uses CoreGard technology developed in the off-road racing tyre, the Baja T/A KR2, for split and bruise-resistant sidewall rubber and a thicker, extended shoulder to prevent sidewall failures. Computer modeling was used to predict object paths and create a sidewall design most likely to deflect protruding objects, reducing the chances of splits and snags. • Longer Treadlife: The KO2 has a new tread design and rubber formulation that helps it last twice as long on gravel and 15 per cent longer on asphalt than the previous tyre. The tread rubber has been optimally blended to reduce chips and tears on gravel. A new footprint shape and interlocking tread design provide more uniform wear over the long haul. Special stone ejectors push objects out of the tread to reduce drilling into the tyre. • Aggressive Traction: Side-Biter lugs in the sidewall improve traction in mud, snow and rocks. Raised bars in the shoulder help release compacted mud for better traction in soft soil. 3-D sipes create biting edges for better snow traction. 1 Based on internal sidewall splitting test vs. BFGoodrich® All-Terrain T/A KO tyre in size LT265/70R17. rom May, the highly popular Michelin Vintage car tyre range will be available in Australia. Featuring the Michelin Classic and Historic Competition tyre ranges, the new arrangement will give vintage car owners easier access to approximately 90 products. The first dealer to receive the tyres will be Stuckey Tyre Service. Michelin Australia Managing Director, Cedric Binoit said the move was prompted by increasing demand for the product in Australia. “Michelin is pleased to be able to offer this highly popular range again to our Australian customers,” he said. “Through Stuckey Tyre Service we are providing easier access and improved service to vintage car owners looking to fit Michelin tyres to their prized vehicles. Not only will they be able to keep the original look and feel of their vehicle, they will also benefit from improved safety and performance. “Tyre safety and performance have come a long way since these cars were first manufactured, but

Survey highlights Aussie drivers’ lack of tyre knowledge

A

ustralia’s knowledge of tyre safety has been rated terrible with a new survey revealing 40 per cent of drivers are unaware of legal tyre safety standards and almost one in three have driven on tyres they suspected were unroadworthy. The same number also admitted they have been fearful of an accident while driving on worn tyres. Consumer research company Canstar Blue questioned more than 1,600 motorists who have purchased car tyres in the last 18 months and found that one in five drivers don’t know how to check if their tyres are too worn, while one in four are unclear as to what the correct air 14

pressure of their tyres should be. “It’s deeply concerning to discover just how many drivers are uninformed about legal tyre safety standards, but are still willing to get behind the wheel of their car,” said Canstar Blue spokesman Simon Downes. “Not only are they putting their own lives in danger by driving on worn tyres, they are also putting other road users at risk. Tyres seem to be one of those things that some drivers rarely consider and put to the back of their minds. “Drivers also risk insurance claims being voided in the event of an accident if their tyres are worn. Insurance companies could potentially reject a claim if you

haven’t maintained your vehicle in a roadworthy condition.” Female drivers are twice as likely as males to be unaware of tyre safety standards and almost three times as likely not to know how to check their tread depth. And the younger a driver is, the less likely they are to know the basics, the survey found. Just over half of Gen Y survey respondents said they didn’t know about legal tyre safety standards. The Canstar Blue survey also found that 48 per cent of drivers delay buying new tyres for as long as possible, while 23 per cent tend to buy the cheapest tyres available.

GENEVA PUTS ON A SHOW

T

he Geneva International Motor Show proved its status as one of the biggest and most important events on the automotive calendar

as nearly 700,000 people visited the show during its 11-day run at the beginning of March. And the heavyweights of the auto world were there too, displaying new

production models as well as some truly remarkable sports cars and concept models. Here are just a few of the choice motors that took a bow in Switzerland.

experience. Comprising cutting edge engineering, the Vulcan will comply with all relevant FIA race safety requirements and, prior to taking delivery of their cars, owners will be offered the opportunity to take part in an extensive and detailed program of intensive track driver training. A brutally powerful-looking car, the Vulcan does, the company says, offer a few cues and hints at a possible future design direction for the firm’s cars.

PORSCHE 911 GT3 RS

The RS is packed with features for owners with an eye on the race track, including bolted-in roll cage behind the front seats, and a separately provided six-point safety harness. The Sport Chrono Package features the Porsche Track Precision app for smartphones which can be used to have lap times automatically measured via GPS. A car for the weekend racetrack warrior.

An 800+ horsepower, all carbon-fibre creation, Aston Martin’s trackonly Vulcan was another Geneva show-stopper from the British marque. The new supercar – powered by the most potent iteration yet of the company’s naturally-aspirated, 7.0-litre V12 petrol engine – will be limited to just 24 examples worldwide and offers owners a unique racing

Porsche says it has packed as much motorsport technology as possible in its street-legal 911 GT3 RS due out for sale mid-year. Powered by a 4-litre six-cylinder engine with 500 hp (368 kW), the RS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and on to 200 km/h in 10.9 seconds. 18 18

l/100km. There’s some hi-tech business going on inside the GTE, not least of which is VW’s attempt to interface the car’s electronics directly with the driver in the navigation system. Based on the driver’s biometric data, the Sport Coupé Concept GTE will, apparently, determine via a smartwatch or armband for measuring the driver’s vital functions, whether to select a route that includes an exciting country road or a gentle route instead. The sole purpose is, the company says, for the driver to experience maximum driving enjoyment.

of blade-like edges and the stunning spindle grille, inside there’s seating for four with priority given over to the driver, with the driver’s seat fixed and accompanied by adjustable steering wheel and pedals. The company says the infotainment system includes a hologram-style digital display incorporated in the instrument binnacle as well as a wide-angle head-up display. As concept cars go, this one certainly raises eyebrows.

created, the concept is, according to Chairman Wolfgang Durheimer: “the ultimate expression of our vision for Bentley’s future – a powerful, exquisite and individual concept.” Though no word on the powertrain, if the EXP 10 Speed 6 were anything other than brutally powerful, it would be a crying shame. continued on page 20

Volkswagen unveiled its four-door concept in Geneva with the company saying the car provides a view of the new Volkswagen design language. With a V6 TSI engine, the 279kW GTE plug-in hybrid delivers longdistance properties while enabling zero-emission driving – thanks to the deployment of two electric motors and an externally chargeable battery. The hybrid offering results in some impressive figures - a top speed of 250 km/h and an average combined fuel consumption of 2.0

Lexus revealed its pitch to capture the city-dweller market with its ultra-compact, urban 2+2 model - the LF-SA Concept. At 3.4m long, 1.7m wide and 1.4m high, the LF-SA represents, the company says, the kind of compact packaging that is essential for genuine city car manoeuvrability and agility. ASTON MARTIN DBX CONCEPT

It would seem that the design gurus at Aston Martin are unable to create anything that isn’t jaw-droppingly stunning, and the all-electric DBX Concept is yet another piece of automotive art. There’s more to the DBX than its looks of course, with the company saying that it

embraces the ‘very latest engineering techniques and theories’ that includes the use of electric, inboard-of-wheel, motors powered by lithium sulphur cells, carbon ceramic brakes with a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS), rear view cameras in place of conventional mirrors and a host of other futuristic features.

Goodyear concept tyres offer a glimpse of the future

G

oodyear Tire & Rubber Company unveiled two ground-breaking concept tyres at the Geneva Motor Show – concepts that, the company says, provide a glimpse of what practical innovations may be on the horizon. The first concept – named “BHO3” – offers the possibility of charging the batteries of electric cars by transforming the heat generated by the rolling tyre into electrical energy. The second concept – named “Triple Tube” – contains three tubes that adjust tyre inflation pressure in response to changing road conditions, delivering new levels of performance and versatility. “These concept tyres reimagine the role that tyres may play in the future,” said Joe Zekoski, Goodyear’s senior vice president and chief technical officer. “We envision a future in which our products become more integrated with the vehicle and the consumer, more environmentally friendly and more versatile.”

BHO3 This tyre generates electricity through the action of materials in the tyre that capture and transform the energy created by heat when it flexes as it rolls during normal driving conditions. The materials used optimise the tyre’s electricity generation capabilities as well as its rolling resistance. As demand for electric cars grows, Goodyear says this technology has the potential to significantly contribute to the solution of future mobility challenges. 20

• The Sporty position – with reduced inflation within the inboard shoulder tube – gives drivers dry handling through an optimised contact patch. • The Wet Traction position – with maximised inflation in the centre tube – provides high aquaplaning resistance through a raised tread in the centre of the tyre. Although these tyres are concepts, Mr Zekoski said they represent an essential aspect of Goodyear’s innovation strategy. “It is more important than ever for us to stay firmly rooted in our market-back innovation process, which calls on us to focus on, and anticipate, the rapidly evolving needs of our customers,” he said. Goodyear BH03

This tyre technology could eliminate the vehicle-range anxiety motorists may have with electric cars.

TRIPLE TUBE This tyre features three internal tubes within the tyre. Tubes are located beneath the tread and near the inboard and outboard shoulders of the tyre as well as the centre. The tyre relies on an internal pump that moves air from the main air chamber to the three individual air chambers, or tubes. The tyre automatically adjusts – on its own – to three different positions based on road conditions: • The Eco/Safety position – with maximum inflation in all three tubes – offers reduced rolling resistance.

Ryco elimates the guesswork for installing In-Tank Fuel Filters

R

yco has developed a fuel filter removal tool to make it easier to replace an in-tank fuel filter. “Many mechanics have experienced difficulty when replacing in-tank fuel filters,” said Pablo Ruiz, Ryco Light Duty Product Manager. “Unlike alternative tools, the Ryco filter removal tool has four fingers to lock in the contact points providing an even pressure across the retainer ring making the job a whole lot easier and avoiding unnecessary damage.” According to vehicle manufacturers’ requirements, in-tank fuel filters are required to be replaced regularly and Ryco says this tool is quick and easy to use and provides peace of mind from knowing the job has been done correctly. The kit comes with one master tool and four attachments in a durable carry box. The tool is made of a long service-life laser cut steel design of nitrogenised hardened steel with a rust resistant coating. The Ryco In-Tank Fuel Filter Removal Tool is now available from leading Ryco stockists throughout Australia and New Zealand.

New York premiere for all-new Lexus RX

L

exus unveiled the latest version of its best-selling RX model at the New York motor show in April. With more than 2.1 million reaching the road, it represents three out of every 10 vehicles the company has sold and the new fourth generation model has arrived with a completely redesigned, luxurious interior, wrapped in a new body with a longer wheelbase. The company says the reimagining of the model yields superior on-road performance and new safety technologies, including

the Lexus Safety System+. The Lexus Safety System+ is being introduced worldwide and integrates several existing Lexus active safety technologies: the Pre-Collision System (PCS), which detects and warns the driver of potential collision risks with vehicles, pedestrians and obstacles on the road ahead; Lane Departure Alert (LDA), which triggers a warning sound if the vehicle moves out of its lane without signalling; and Automatic High Beam (AHB), which helps maintain the best forward

visibility when driving at night. The system’s multi-faceted approach to active safety makes use of a millimetre-wave radar that works with a camera to help keep the RX in its intended driving lane, via the Lane Keeping Assist. Still higher safety levels can be secured using optional features including an Adaptive High Beam System, Panoramic View Monitor and Blind Spot Monitor. The new RX will be available (according to market) with an upgraded, more powerful 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with a target output of 300bhp, matched to a new eight-speed automatic transmission. A full hybrid powertrain will feature an improved, Atkinson cycle 3.5-litre V6. System output, including the electric motor, will also be around 300bhp. The new RX is longer and rides on new 20-inch aluminium wheels (replacing the current 19-inch rims) which can be customised with different coloured inserts. The fourth generation RX is set to arrive in Australia in 2016.

It is a totally driver-focused car, with excellent ergonomics and visibility, and a class-leading driving position. This is also the most day-today usable, practical and attainable McLaren we’ve ever made. It is a dramatic and beautiful sports car.” 25

Hamilton wins in Australia as Ricciardo struggles F or Daniel Ricciardo, an Australian GP that seemed to offer so much in the weeks leading up to the event turned into disappointment as the Red Bull team struggled to keep pace with the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Ricciardo would eventually finish in sixth spot, with Sebastien Vettel taking third and the Williams of Felipe Massa and Felipe Nasr fourth and fifth respectively. “It wasn’t the most exciting race,” said Ricciardo. “We finished the race and got some points which was positive, and there are things we can learn; I think on paper sixth was the best for us today. “In terms of where we need to improve, the main issue is the drivability and the power, there are pretty big chunks that we know we need to find there. Beyond that it’s hard, as with the chassis itself I don’t think we’ve really been able to test it to its limits yet due to the other issues we’ve had. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but we have got a lot of information from this weekend which will help us ahead of Malaysia.” The GP was the perfect start for defending F1 champion Hamilton who recorded his second win in Australia and the 34th of his career and, in partnerships with Rosberg, saw the Mercedes team start the 2015 season the way they finished 2014 – in dominant fashion. Hamilton was understandably ecstatic with the result while also acknowledging the improving

throughout . . . He drove really well and it’s a great result for the team to start the season with a 1-2. “It’s good to see Ferrari back up here on the podium. I think they have taken a big step, so I anticipate a good fight with them this year at some point and we can’t back off. “ And so it would prove to be.

It’s a great feeling to start off the season the way we finished the last and the car is just incredible. Ferraris as the team to watch. “It’s quite unbelievable, really, what this team has done,” said Hamilton. “It’s a great feeling to start off the season the way we finished the last and the car is just incredible. It was still a tough race, though, as Nico was very quick

MALAYSIA With the F1 circus moving to Malaysia at the end of March, it would be Ferrari whio would take the honours at the Sepang circuit - Sebastien Vettel using the cars reliability and a cunning two-stop tyre strategy to take victory while Hamilton and Rosberg took the remaining spots on the podium. Following a spin by Marcus Ericsson in the Sauber on Turn 1 of the fourth lap which brought out the safety car, Hamilton and Rosberg took an early opportunity to change to hard tyres. It was a gamble that locked the Mercedes duo into a three-stop strategy and paid off for Vettel instead who remained on medium tyres and a two-stop plan. “I think it has to be one of my best wins,” said four-teim world champion Vettel. “I did not swap teams that much in the past, and winning for a new team is definitely a great relief.”

CHINA For the third GP of the season, at the Shanghai circuit in China, the pecking order was somewhat restored with Hamilton and Rosberg again taking podium top spots while Vettel continued to look dangerous with third position and Kimi Raikkonen taking fourth in the second Ferrari. The top four used an identical two-stop strategy, with two opening stints on the soft tyre followed by a final stint on the medium tyre. Hamilton set the fastest lap of the race on the soft tyre during his second stint. The race finished behind the safety car with fewer than three laps to go after Max Verstappen in the Toro Rosso came to a halt on the pit straight with a suspected power unit failure.

BAHRAIN At the season’s fourth race, it was Hamilton who once again secured victory, the Englishman dominating the race from pole position. Though he would suffer from some brake problems towards the end of the race, Hamilton held off a determined challenge from Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari to hold on and take the win by 3.3 seconds. Rosberg finished a further 3 seconds adrift in third while Sebastian Vettel took fifth behind Valtteri Bottas in the Williams. Daniel Ricciardo finished sixth, surviving an engine blow out as he crossed the line. The result saw Hamilton extend his championship lead to 93 points, with Rosberg on 66 and Vettel on 65. Ricciardo sits in 7th place in the driver standings with 19 points.

WEC woes for Webber at Silverstone

A

udi took home the honours at the first race of the World Endurance Championship season. The team of Marcel Fässler, Benoit Tréluyer and Andre Lotterer took the chequered flag in the No.7 Audi Sport R18 e-tron Quattro beating out the No.18 Porsche 919 Hybrid of Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb by just 4.6 seconds. The nail-biting finish was set up after a to-and-fro battle between the Audi and Porsche saw Fassler’s 72 second lead reduced to just 11 seconds with 15 minutes to go after the Audi picked up a stop-go penalty. The Swiss driver was able to hang on to score Audi’s first win in the WEC since victory at Austin last September. The Toyota TS 040 Hybrids showed their speed and reliability by coming in third and fourth positions. It was a disappointing day for Mark Webber. The former Formula One star’s No.17 Porsche led the race for the first 80 minutes, just ahead of the No.18 Porsche, before a gearbox issue forced the Aussie into the pits and out of race. 28

Webber started from pole and increased his lead to more than seven seconds during the first 23 laps. At the end of lap 24 he made his first pit stop and changed tyres during a full course yellow and though he continued with a strong lead, the gearbox problem would see him retire after 44 laps. “It was really going smoothly, and I had a nice run at the front of the field. Then we had a drivetrain issue,” said Webber. “I only felt it a lap before, but I couldn’t continue. It’s a real shame because we were in a great position. We had a really good build-up to the weekend. “The guys worked hard, but we didn’t get the result. We were in better shape with the tyres than we thought we would be, and that was a nice surprise. Our hybrid technology is just sensational, it puts us in a good position in both the short and long term.” The next round will be the WEC 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on the 2nd May.

The full 11-race programme will begin in South Korea on May 15, 2015. “Michelin is proud to have been chosen as the exclusive tyre supplier for the GT Asia Series,” said Patrick Dias, Michelin Motorsport Asia Pacific Director. “The importance of the series in Asia, and the quality of the organisation was what attracted us to the Championship. Michelin has been a strong player in the major Asian motorsport disciplines for decades, and the GT Asia Series has been at the heart of our growth strategy in the region since its foundation. “For Michelin, motorsport is the ultimate test of performance. What we learn on track we use to build our road tyres including the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 - the tyre chosen as original equipment for many of the manufacturers present in the GT Asia Series. This makes the Series even more attractive. “Michelin tyres deliver exactly what the competitors demand; speed, reliability, and above all, safety. We will make every effort to provide every driver in the GT Asia Series with the right tyre, at the right moment, and also to offer a great show to the public!”

SR Racing and BFGoodrich claim victory at Sunraysia

even time Australian Off Road Champions, Shannon and Ian Rentsch have continued their winning streak, taking victory at the opening round of the Australian Off-Road Racing Championship. Held on the tough and dusty course located about 50km west of Mildura, the Sunraysia 600 proved too much for many competitors, but it was the teams running BFGoodrich Tires that met the challenge and dominated the results table. Out in front it was the father and son duo from SR Racing that took it all on their stride to win comfortably. Behind them were Matt Hanson and Leigh Wells in the #7 SMU Jimco finishing second outright, 14min 11sec behind Rentsch. Local entrants, Aaron James and navigator Peter Luckraft came home third outright – making it a 1-2-3 for BFGoodrich Tires partners. It was not just the outright class where BFGoodrich Tires partners were winning – the JAWS Racing team of Steven Sanderson and Ben Phillips brought their #403 Jimco home in 9th outright and 1st in the Extreme 2WD Class. Luke Erceg and Daniel

Ziembinski took the Prolite class honours and 4th outright in their Aussie built #150 Matrix – also fitted with BFGoodrich Tires. On display in the paddock was the latest BFGoodrich Tires All Terrain tyre, the KO2. Having only just arrived in the country, this was one of the first opportunities for the public to get up close the tyre.

Engineered from BFGoodrich Tires’ off-road racing experience, the BFGoodrich All Terrain KO2 is available now in selected sizes. The Australian Off Road Championship now heads to the red centre for the second round of the season, the 40th Anniversary Tatts Finke Desert Race on 5-8 June. China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina), through its wholly owned subsidiary China National Tire & Rubber Co. (CNRC), looks set to take over Pirelli in a deal that values the Italian company at more $US7billion. The Chinese firm has signed an agreement with Pirelli stockholder, Camfin S.p.A. (CF) to purchase Camfin’s 26.2 per cent stake in Pirelli at 15 Euro per share. According to ChemChina, ‘pursuant to the agreement, the operation and management team of Pirelli will be kept stable, and new business growth strategy will be defined.’ As the fifth largest global tyre manufacturer, Pirelli enjoys a history of more than 140 years

in tyre R&D and manufacturing with sales revenue exceeding Euro 6 billion and a sales network covering more than 160 countries and regions. It is currently the sole tyre supplier to Formula One. “The partnership with a global player like ChemChina, through its affiliates, represents a great opportunity for Pirelli,” said Marco Tronchetti Provera, Chairman and CEO of Pirelli. CNRC is a domestic industrial leader in the manufacture of steel radial tyres and off-the-road tyres, and the largest producer of auto brake hose and high strength conveyor belt in China, with export markets in more than 140 countries and regions. ChemChina says the acquisition will create long term industrial value in the tyre sector,

strengthen Pirelli’s development plans, reinforce the coverage of strategic geographical areas and, through integration, enable the company to double its volumes in the industrial tyre business. “We are delighted with the opportunity to team up with Mr. Marco Tronchetti Provera and his team to continue to build together a world class organization and a market leader in the global tire industry,” said Mr Jianxin Ren, Chairman of ChemChina.

Bridgestone Americas has launched the latest tyre in its fuel-efficient Ecopia line - the Ecopia EP422 Plus tyre. The Ecopia EP422 Plus tyre is engineered with a combination of light and strong materials for greater fuel efficiency. A recent online survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults, commissioned by Bridgestone and conducted by Harris Poll in March 2015, indicates that 94 per cent of Americans are looking for ways to stretch their dollars. This trend extends directly to their habits on the road, as 74 per cent of drivers who own a vehicle made changes to their driving habits and performed vehicle maintenance in the past 12

Kumho makes a return to the UK truck tyre market

K

umho has returned to the UK commercial tyre market with a newly-reformed truck tyre department, a new direct distribution network and products that, according to department head Steve Miller, are “far more competitive than ever before . . . We have maximised casing quality, improved tread compounds and introduced some highly-effective new tread patterns. Along with keen pricing, these upgrades will ensure the lowest cost per kilometre.” The three headline offerings are: 1. KMA12 This heavily blocked tyre features reinforced construction 30

for optimum cut and damage resistance. Together with a stone ejector bar this, Kumho says, makes the KMA12 an ideal product for the forestry and construction industries. 2. KRS04 The KRS04 is a purpose-built super single steer tyre, which, the company says, though particularly well suited to regional work, is also being deployed in longer-haul environments, as a result of its low fuel consumption and cool running properties. 3. KRS15 A standard regional steer tyre, KRS15 has been optimised

for even running, which results in a low wear rate and strong grip. Kumho’s new direct distribution strategy has been made possible by the move to a major new DHL-run warehouse facility located in Leicestershire in England’s Midlands. Near major motorways, the company says it is an ideal location for such a national hub, and besides housing thousands of truck, van, 4x4 and car tyres, it is also home to an expanded sales and marketing operation.

J.D. Power Report: Run-Flat Tyres Letting Air Out of Customer Satisfaction

C

ustomers with run-flat tyres are less satisfied overall and replace tyres more frequently in the first two years of ownership than do those with non-run-flat tyres, according to the J.D. Power 2015 U.S. Original Equipment Tyre Customer Satisfaction Study released in March. The study measured tyre owner satisfaction in four vehicle segments: luxury, passenger car, performance sport and truck/utility.1 Satisfaction was examined in four factors: tyre wear; tyre ride; tyre appearance; and tyre traction/handling. Rankings were based on owner experiences with their tyres after two years of vehicle ownership. The study found overall satisfaction among owners of run-flat tyres lags that of owners of non-run-flat tyres across the luxury, passenger car and performance sport segments. In the performance sport segment, satisfaction with nonrun-flat tyres averages 685 points on a 1,000-point scale and satisfaction with run-flat tyres averages 612. In the luxury segment, satisfaction with run-flat tyres was 24 points lower than with non-runflat tires (688 vs. 712, respectively). In all three of the rank-eligible segments, the largest gaps in satisfaction were in tyre ride and tyre wear. “The use of run-flat tyres is likely to increase as automakers continue to view them as a viable option for improving fuel efficiency by eliminating the need for a spare tyre, thereby reducing the weight,” said Brent Gruber, director, global automotive division at J.D. Power. “It’s vital that auto and tyre manufacturers address the ride and wear issues, which are still not meeting customer expectations. Customers expect run-flat tyres won’t compromise tread life or the ability to provide a quiet and comfortable ride.” 1 For a segment award to be presented, there must be at least four suppliers with sufficient sample within an award segment. No truck/utility award was presented due to insufficient market representation among rankable suppliers in the segment.

WORLD NEWS Michelin says the CrossClimate brakes in short distances on dry ground, has earned the top “A” rating in wet braking on European tyre labels and is approved for winter use, indicated with the Three Peak Mountain Snow Flake (3PMSF) certification (displayed on the sidewall) showing that it can be used in all seasons, even in countries that require special equipment for winter driving. Recently added to Michelin’s existing tyre catalog, the company says the new CrossClimate tyre addresses an increasingly urgent need among European motorists to feel safer when faced with unstable, unpredictable weather conditions. Road conditions can change from one day to the next, during the same day or sometimes even in just a few hours. Rain and snow amplify drivers’ need to be properly equipped in changing weather conditions, to ensure their safety and that of their loved ones. Michelin says the CrossClimate offers reassurance, making it possible to deal with changes in the weather, and delivers total safety performance simply and economically. Motorists can drive the entire year in the most common weather situations, on just one set of Michelin CrossClimate tyres.

Firestone is aiming to capture ‘the minds of those who are young at heart’ over the European summer with the Firestone Music Tour. As a key sponsor of music festivals in Spain, Germany, France, Poland, Italy and the UK, Firestone plans to reassert its presence on the European market as ‘a dynamic, energetic and above all cool brand’. The Firestone Music Tour aims to boost the visibility of the brand amongst a target group who identify with the brand’s values and heritage, while at the same time linking the brand to a ‘totally cool music experience’. The company says a team of Firestone roadies will be on hand at an elaborate stand, while organising special attractions and extra activities both inside the festival grounds and in car parks and campsites outside it. The Firestone Music Tour will also be supported by a pan-European social media campaign and special promotional events in local markets. Bridgestone, who acquired the Firestone brand in 1988, says it is working hard to spread the word in Europe with initiatives in the domains of both product development and marketing.
