From the Editor

HELLO AND WELCOME

to the August edition of Motor Trader.

Over recent years, the traditional Auto Show has been somewhat in decline. Some have even pulled the plug, at least for now, on future events. There are still some shows about, however, that can pull in the enthusiasts, and one of the best known is the Goodwood Festival of Speed, held at the grand Goodwood Estate in southern England every year in the northern summer.

A mix of motor racing, tech expo, supercar showcase, and motor show, the Festival of Speed has become one of the more prominent automotive events on the calendar and many manufacturers use it to springboard their new vehicles into the public consciousness.

This year, there were plenty of reveals and we take a look at some of them in this edition,

including the jaw-dropping RB17 hypercar from Red Bull. Check it out from page 12.

Also in this month's edition we talk to Cam Duffy from Cam Duffy Autos in Atherton for our Q&A feature and, in our Automotive News section, take a look at some eye-catching offerings from the likes of Chevy with its stonkingly powerful Corvette ZR1, Aston Martin with its wonderful-looking Valiant, and the new limited-edition Ranger Tremor from Ford.

In training news, we have a report from the MTA Institute's Trainers Conference - a biannual event that brings all the Institute's trainers from across the state to its Brisbane HQ for professional development training.

Also inside is news from MTA Queensland's Workforce Solutions team on its workincluding teaming up with bigname industry players - showing young people the many auto career opportunities available.

I hope you enjoy this edition of Motor Trader and please do reach out if you have some interesting new you'd like to share.

Cheers

From the Desk of Management

AFTER TOUCHING ON the issue of fraudulent roadworthy certificates in this column last month, I am pleased to report an update from the Queensland Government.

Recently, the Hon. Bart Mellish, Minister for Transport and Main Roads (TMR), announced that the TMR will establish a dedicated task force and information hotline to enforce safety certificate compliance. Dodgy roadworthies undermine reputable businesses and put Queenslanders in danger and we have been arguing strongly for the need to tackle this problem for some years. It is pleasing to see our advice being heeded and action finally being taken.

While we await the final details, MTA Queensland has also advised the government of the need for industry to be represented on the taskforce, and a number of our members have been put forward to be a part of the process.

. . . DODGY ROADWORTHIES UNDERMINE REPUTABLE BUSINESSES AND PUT

QUEENSLANDERS IN DANGER . . .

While we can register some satisfaction around the issue of dodgy roadworthy certificates, MTA Queensland is deeply disappointed to hear of Queensland Premier Steven Miles' announcement that, if re-elected, 12 state-owned fuel stations will be built across the state and a trial introduced to cap fuel price increases.

While we recognise the importance of tackling cost-ofliving pressures, this is a complex issue and consideration needs to be made to ensure retailers can continue to run their businesses successfully. The Premier's plan, made with apparently little industry consultation, lacks transparency and economic analysis. Taxpayers will end up covering the operational costs if these service stations run at a loss, as many independent retailers do.

Be assured that MTA Queensland will argue vigorously for the rights of our service station members.

IAM PLEASED TO start this month’s column with some exciting news. First- and second-year female automotive apprentices across Queensland will now have the opportunity to access targeted, one-on-one mentoring and support outlets through MTA Queensland’s new Women in Trades Apprenticeship Mentoring program!

Proudly supported by the Queensland Government, the program will see us partner with BUSY Sisters to deliver individualised mentoring through a team of experienced female mentors, delivering the training, resources, and support necessary to allow all apprentices to thrive in a traditionally male-dominated sector. Throughout the program, apprentices will be introduced to the Auto Women program, allowing them

If you are a first- or second-year female apprentice in Queensland, or are an employer, and would like to get in touch with a mentor today, click HERE.

Speaking of Auto Women, our next online Connect event is fast approaching! Set to take place on Wednesday, 28th August, we will be hearing from an excellent line-up of female trailblazers, including recent Auto Women scholarship recipient and Financial Controller at Cricks Tweed, Leah Davis, and Paint and Panel’s 2024 Women in Collision Award Winner and Owner/ Manager of Northside Smash Repairs, Leah Cahill. It is sure to be an extremely insightful event, and I implore all women from across the automotive industry to get involved by coming along! To register for the Auto Women Connect event, click HERE.

MTA |Q&A

Established in June of 1992, Cam Duffy Autos has been a well-known name in the motoring community of Far North Queensland for more than 30 years. Motor Trader caught up with owners Cam and Andrea Duffy to learn more about how their business has grown from strength to strength over more than three decades.

CAM, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY?

CD: I have been working on cars for more than 40 years. In 1982, I completed my trade as a motor mechanic. Since then, I have continued to train so that I can keep up with developments in the trade and improve my skill set.

YOU HAVE BUILT A MULTI-FACETED BUSINESS. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CORE SERVICES OFFERED.

CD: We have a mechanical workshop in Atherton at the very centre of the Atherton Tablelands. Until recently, we also had a workshop in Malanda. We have sold it to a local mechanic so that he can also build his future in the industry.

Cam and Andrea Duffy, owners of Cam Duffy Autos
WORDS & IMAGES : LARA WILDE

The Atherton workshop is an approved RACQ Mechanical workshop, and we have the RACQ auto glass contract to repair and replace windscreens and glass. We have several contracts with road service providers, but the main contract is RACQ for towing and roadside assistance. The statewide club is really one to be a member of as they provide the best assistance to its members, as long as the member has the correct cover they require for their needs.

We also provide a towing service to the public, all insurance companies and the Queensland Police Service. Finally, we have Duffy’s Car Rentals with 13 cars available to hire. This works well when people’s vehicles are being repaired either in a workshop or a panel repair shop.

Our move to provide the towing service

“WE HAVE CONTINUED TO PROVIDE AN HONEST AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICE OVER THE YEARS AND WE ARE STILL HERE GOING STRONG.”

has given us diversification in an everchanging industry. We have continued to provide an honest and professional service over the years and we are still here going strong.

MTA | Q&A

ARE YOU STILL HANDS ON IN THE BUSINESS TODAY?

CD: Yes, but in a different capacity to a motor mechanic. I'm more hands on providing roadside service and as a tow truck driver. I'm also an advisor to our mechanics employed at the workshop and several other mechanics around the state.

WHO IS IN YOUR CURRENT TEAM?

CD: The Cam Duffy Auto team is led by my wife Andrea who manages all of the office tasks including administration, marketing and accounts. Andrea is supported by Taylor, Anne, Jann and Clare in the office. We have myself, Michael, Dwayne, Troy, Lachlan, Logan and Daine providing roadside service and towing services across the Tablelands region. Michael, Dwayne, Blake and Daine are also employed as mechanics in the workshop in Atherton when they aren’t out on the road in the tilt tray.

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES?

CD: Finding and retaining great mechanical staff. We take on young people, train them up, they finish their apprenticeship, buy a hoist and go out on their own. We are proud that they are good enough to branch out on their own, but we also really wish they would stay.

“WE ENROL OUR STAFF IN AS MUCH TRAINING AS WE CAN. THE TRAINING IS PROVIDED BY BOTH MTA QUEENSLAND AND RACQ.”

HOW MUCH IMPORTANCE DO YOU PLACE ON SOCIAL MEDIA FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

CD: Social media is the majority of our advertising strategy now, but word of mouth is still the most important.

Vehicle repairs and maintenance are a grudge payment for the majority of people, and they aren’t the customer we attract to our business. Prevention is better than being that person broken down on the side of the road. We have clients who have been with us since we first opened the doors to our business 32 years ago who have entrusted their car and their safety to our team. Those loyal customers are the kind we aim to attract to our business.

The media are also a challenge to every mechanical workshop. The media bangs on about the ‘unprofessional’, ‘rip off’,

‘dishonest’ mechanics in the trade on a regular basis. The keyboard warriors who don’t have faces are brutal, but decent people see past that. Social media can be crippling to a business. We have had to constantly prove to the public we are not that mechanic.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE GREATEST ADVANCEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

CD: We’ve stayed away from the Dynos but the systems and technology available is just mind-blowing. The advances in technology impact every aspect of the business, not just the office but also the technology in the motor vehicles. The advancements of technology in the automotive industry are where we need to keep updated with every bit of training offered to us.

DO YOU CONSIDER THAT THE ADVANCEMENTS IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES (EVS) WILL HAVE AN IMPACT ON YOUR BUSINESS?

CD: Most definitely the EV industry will impact our workshop at some point. We

have attended several broken down EVs on roadside call outs with issues. Our staff have attended the training that’s been available to us so far. We have three qualified technicians to disarm the electric vehicles in the event of an accident or as a part of the process for repairs.

WHAT TRAINING DO YOU DO WITH STAFF?

CD: We enrol our staff in as much training as we can. The training is provided by both MTA Queensland and RACQ. Our apprentice Blake Peagham was the MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month in June and has finished his training with Antony [his MTA Institute trainer] this week.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST BENEFIT OF YOUR MTA QUEENSLAND MEMBERSHIP?

CD: Cam Duffy Autos has been a member of MTA Queensland for more than 20 years. During that time, we have appreciated the access to human resource services and advice to manage our staff. Our relationship with MTA Queensland and

Left to right: The Cam Duffy Autos team of Daine, Anne, Clare, Blake, Andrea, Cam, Michael, Lachlan, Jann, Troy, Taylor, Logan, and Dwayne

the MTA Institute as a Registered Training Organisation has also been instrumental in training many of our apprentices over the years.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

CD: We probably won’t enter full-time retirement as this workshop is our way of life. We enjoy helping people so we will continue to run the business and look after our customers and our staff. The business is going from strength to strength, so we have no plans to quit anytime soon. Having said that the business is also very established and stable so Andrea and I can afford to take in lots of travel throughout Australia with our caravan.

WHAT VEHICLES DO YOU OWN?

CD: We have many! Queensland Transport love our registration cheque every year. We have five tow trucks with tilt slide trays and five Roadside service patrol vehicles. We have 13 passenger cars as hire vehicles. Personally, we have a Nissan Y62 for towing our caravan and a Mazda CX5 as Andrea’s daily driver.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR SPARE TIME?

“I HAVE BEEN TRAINING APPRENTICES FOR CAM AND ANDREA FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS. THEY CONSISTENTLY PUT ON APPRENTICES AND THEIR TRAINING IS A HIGH PRIORITY FOR THE BUSINESS. IT IS GREAT TO SEE THEIR INVESTMENT IN THEIR STAFF AND THE INDUSTRY AS A WHOLE AS AN EMPLOYER, A MENTOR AND A COMMUNITY LEADER.”
- ANTONY JOSLIN – MTA INSTITUTE TRAINER

CD: We love to spend time with our grandchildren. Our family is our greatest achievement ever. When we aren’t enjoying time with our family we like to get out in our caravan and cruise around this beautiful country we live in.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG YOU STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?

CD: Be honest and provide an outstanding service to people and you will succeed.

THE GOODWOOD FESTIVAL of Speed, held every northern summer since 1993, has become a hallmark event in the automotive calendar, and is something of a bucket-list visit for car enthusiasts, collectors, and racers from around the globe.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of the elegant Goodwood House, the festival, established by the Duke of Richmond, is a four-day celebration of motoring with

the event's centerpiece being the iconic hill climb, a 1.9km course that winds through the grounds of the estate. This hill

climb is a showcase of a diverse array of vehicles - from vintage classics and modern supercars to cutting-edge prototypes and legendary race cars.

This year, the hill climb was won in a time of 43.98 seconds by . . . a van. Beating out some of the sleekest and fastest supercars on the planet, driver Romain Dumas won the Shootout in the Ford Supervan 4.2. Packing four electric motors, a 50kWh battery and a bespoke control system, the Supervan 4.2 punches out 2000hp (1490kW) and is something unique.

It’s unlikely you’ll ever be able to see one scooting around town doing deliveries, but this one off does show just how special and potent electrified vehicles can be.

The Festival of Speed is not limited to the hill climb. The event also features an array of static displays, interactive exhibits, and other activities. The Cartier Style et Luxe concours d'elegance showcases some of the world's most beautiful and rare automobiles, while Bonhams Cars Auction features a collection of spectacular

RED BULL UNVEILS THE RB17 HYPERCAR

THERE ARE QUITE a few hypercars knocking around these days - cars that are all about incredible performance and almost always look as if they should be high-tailing it around Le Mans or the Nürburgring at absurd speeds.

The legendary brands, and some newcomers, are all there on the hypercar starting grid – Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Bugatti, Rimac and so on – and now there is another challenger, Red Bull.

Red Bull Technologies – the company behind all the whiz-bang tech, engineering, and design that powers the Red Bull Formula One cars – took the covers off

vehicles going under the hammer. This year saw a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ Coupé selling for £1,135,000 ($2.2 million) and a 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster sell for £1,045,400 ($2.02million).

The festival also serves as a platform for manufacturers to unveil new models and cutting-edge technologies. It is not uncommon for major automotive brands to choose Goodwood for the world debut of their latest offerings, taking advantage of the event's global reach and the presence of a knowledgeable and enthusiastic audience. For example, of note for 2024, Goodwood was the event chosen by Red Bull to debut its magnificent hypercar, the RB17.

From electric hypercars to state-ofthe-art driver assistance systems, the Festival of Speed offers a glimpse into the future of mobility and, over the following pages, Motor Trader takes a look at some of the wonderful vehicles that made an appearance this year.

its hypercar effort at Goodwood, and the RB17, as it is known, is one slipperylooking, track-hugging creation.

The track-only RB17 features a two-seater carbon fibre monocoque chassis with a semi-stressed mid-mounted naturally aspirated 4.5-litre V10 engine that is red lined at 15,000 rpm. It is paired up with a 149kW (200hp) electric motor. That motor performs functions beyond giving the RB17 extra muscle – it is used to put the

car into reverse (there is no reverse gear), starting the car, and as an alternator for power to other systems.

Power for speed is transferred to the rear wheels via a carbon fibre gearbox. Weighing under 900kg and with more than 895kW (1,200hp), the RB17, Red Bull says, delivers F1-equivalent lap times and top speeds in excess of 350km/h.

Aerodynamics are, clearly, essential to the RB17’s performance and there is epic amounts of downforce – 1700kg of downforce at 160km/h apparently –to ensure that.

Only 50 of the RB17 are to be built and customers will be getting their hands on something with some epic pedigree. Not only is it being produced by a company steeped in Formula One success, but its designer is the legendary Adrian Newey - a man considered one of the sport’s great engineers and whose designs have won hundreds of races and plenty of championships. His efforts over more than 40 years have included winning cars in the Indy Car series as well as in Formula One

ONLY 50 OF THE RB17 ARE TO BE BUILT AND CUSTOMERS WILL BE GETTING THEIR HANDS ON SOMETHING WITH SOME EPIC PEDIGREE .

with Williams, McLaren and, of course, Red Bull.

A customer journey is planned for owners, with development and tailoring of the car to suit individual driver’s needs being part of the experience. Each RB17 will be bespoke, with customers able to specify everything from the exterior paint colour to interior materials, and a whole host of smaller details. Track days will be held at some of the world’s great circuits with drivers, engineers and support staff on hand to make sure the cars are running at their best.

The RB17 is at the cutting edge, and a cutting-edge hypercar won’t be cheap, with the price mooted to be around £5 million ($9.7 million).

SPEED & SPLENDOUR: THE GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED

THE ALPINE A290 HOT HATCH

ALPINE, THE FRENCH manufacturer of sports and racing cars, appeared at the Goodwood festival with a handful of its models, including its wild Alpenglow concept. Also on display was the brand’s new hot hatch, the Alpine A290 which debuted at the 24 Hours of Le Mans earlier this year.

An all-electric offering, the A290 comes standard with a 52kWh battery offering up to 380km of range (WLTP). A 100 kW DC fast-charging system enables it to go from 15 to 80 per cent charge in 30 minutes or to recover up to 150km (WLTP) in 15 minutes. At an AC charging point, its on-board 11 kW charger enables the vehicle to be recharged from 10 to 80 per cent in 13 hours 20 minutes. This charger

The 5-door, 5-seater, hatchback weighs in at 1479kg, and is 3990mm long and 1520mm tall.

Inside, the cockpit boasts a 10.25-inch instrument screen behind the steering wheel and a 10.1-inch central infotainment screen oriented towards the driver.

An Alpine Telemetrics function gives customers access to three main categories of services: Live Data, Coaching and Challenges.

A three-spoke sports steering wheel, with a flattened mid-point, is covered in Nappa leather and includes aluminium buttons plus a rotary knob to set the regeneration level. Seats offer side reinforcement for extra support and are upholstered in either a coated fabric in first trim levels or a Deep Blue and Grey Nappa leather in the top-ofthe-range versions.

HISPANO SUIZA CARMEN SAGRERA

MAKING ITS DEBUT outside of its homeland of Spain was the Carmen Sagrera hypercar, an all-electric luxury performance monster from the century-old luxury car manufacturer, Hispano Suiza.

THE THIRD MODEL IN THE COMPANY’S CARMEN HYPERCAR LINE-UP, THE CARMEN SAGRERA BOASTS FOUR 205KW MOTORS SITUATED AT THE REAR AND OFFERS A WHOPPING 820KW/1150NM . . .

Carmen Sagrera

The third model in the company’s Carmen hypercar line-up, the Carmen Sagrera boasts four 205kW motors situated at the rear and offers a whopping 820kW/1150Nm - a set-up delivering stupendous performance, including a claimed sprint from 0 to 100km/h of 2.6 seconds. A 103kWh battery offers a range of up to 480km (WLTP).

The transmission transfers power to the rear axle and features a virtual self-locking differential, ensuring top track performance and torque transfer to the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres. Both axles feature a deformable parallelogram suspension with adjustable shock absorbers for compression and extension settings, along with coil springs adjustable in hardness and height. This setup is complemented by an anti-roll bar linking both sides.

The Sagrera also features an advanced braking system. The company says singleblock brake calipers provide superior rigidity and improved braking feel, while reducing weight by 500 grams. The car is equipped with 400mm carbo-ceramic discs on both axles.

The interior of the Carmen Sagrera is, of course, luxurious, receiving a major overhaul over previous models with a darker, racier feel and a redesigned centre console.

GENESIS MAGMA GV60 CONCEPT MAKES WINNING DEBUT

THE GENESIS GV60 Magma Concept made its action debut at Goodwood, having a crack at the hill climb event. One of a handful of cars being exhibited that showcased the Genesis Magma performance vehicle program, the GV60 performed exceptionally well, winning the 4-seater production car category and finishing 16th overall in the Shootout. Specifications for the GV60 Magma Concept are still uncertain but it clearly packs a wallop and production of the model to be available to the public is set for 2025.

Race and rally driver driver Gethin Jones, who piloted GV60 Magma Concept up the hill during the timed Shootout, praised the car’s abilities.

"Driving the GV60 Magma Concept at Goodwood was a rewarding experience,” he said. “The car's responsiveness and power were impressive throughout the event, and its ability to handle the hill climb with such precision is a testament to the engineering excellence behind it."

Looks like we have something to look forward to next year!

LAND ROVER DEBUTS DEFENDER OCTA OFFROAD BEAST

VENERABLE BRITISH BRAND Land Rover took the wraps off what it calls the ‘the toughest, most capable and most luxurious model’ in its Defender 4x4 range at Goodwood.

Called the OCTA, the new model is equipped with a 4.4-litre twin turbo mild-hybrid V8 engine set-up delivering 467kW and 750Nm. 800Nm is on hand with Dynamic Launch Mode activated. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with high and low range gears. The powertrain is potent enough to push the OCTA from 0 to 100km/h in four seconds and on to a top speed of 250km/h.

Introduced on the OCTA is hydraulically interlinked 6D Dynamics suspension technology for the first time on a Defender, alongside extensive hardware and geometry changes. The OCTA sits 28mm higher and has a stance widened by 68mm, for better ground clearance and stability. Revised suspension components include longer and tougher wishbones, and unique active dampers with separate accumulators. It also features uprated 400mm front brake discs with Brembo calipers and, Land Rover says, the fastest steering ratio of any Defender to date.

It features 33-inch tyres, the largest ever fitted to a production Defender, 22 | Motor Trader August 2024

with a Goodyear Advanced All-Terrain Tyre developed specifically for the model.

Driving modes include OCTA Mode, the first dedicated Defender off-road driving mode with a performance focus. OCTA Mode also enables an Off-Road Launch mode for optimum acceleration on loose surfaces. When combined with the lowest traction control settings (TracDSC or DSC off) it also engages an Off-Road ABS calibration for optimum braking performance on loose surfaces too.

Defender’s suite of familiar Terrain Response modes remains with specific calibrations for Sand, Mud and Ruts, Grass

Gravel Snow, and Rock Crawl – assisted by off-road driver aids such as ClearSight Ground View, which effectively makes the bonnet transparent for improved visibility off the beaten track.

Inside, the front row of the Defender OCTA features new Performance Seats with more supportive bolsters and integrated headrests.

In the UK, the OCTA Edition One model –a special edition available through the first year of production – has an indicative price from £160,800, that’s about $313,000.

CAPRI REVIVED AS ALL-ELECTRIC SUV

ANOTHER CLASSIC NAMEPLATE is being revived with Ford revealing a new Capri at Goodwood.

In Australia, that name is usually associated with the small, wedge-shaped, two-door convertible that was around in the early 1990s. However, in Europe, especially the UK, the name is connected to a fastback coupe, built from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, that was Ford in Europe’s answer to the Mustang.

In 2024, something completely different has emerged to carry the famous nameplate.

This time, and following the trend set by the Mustang, it’s an all-electric SUV. Two powertrain options are set to be available across two trim levels – the Capri and Capri Premium.

the rear delivering 210kW/545Nm. That decent power offers a 0-100kmh sprint time of 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 180km/h. The Extended Range AWD gets a dual-motor set-up and a 79kWh battery. It offers 340kW with 545Nm from the rear

Ford Capri
AND, GIVEN IT’S A BRAND-NEW EV, THERE’S PLENTY OF CONVENIENCE AND SAFETY TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE TOO.

top speed here is also 180km/h.

Ford says 10 to 80 per cent charging can be done in less than 30 minutes for both variants with 135kW fast charging possible for the RWD variant and 185kW for the AWD. The company claims an Extended Range RWD Capri can stretch its legs to 620km on a single charge with the AWD versions able to reach a smidge under 600km.

As it’s an electric SUV, the Capri offers plenty of room on the inside and, given it’s a brand-new EV, there’s plenty of convenience and safety technology available too.

A long list of driver standard assist tech – such as steering assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, traffic sign recognition and so on – is here, as are

optional features such as a head-up display and 360-degree camera.

There’s a 5-inch digital instrument cluster and an adjustable 14.6-inch centre display, and amongst the many features, functions and options, there’s wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto; heated front sports seats with driver seat with massage, 12-way power and memory; wireless phone charger and, in the Capri Premium, a 10-speaker B&O sound system.

While there appears to be no word on whether we might see this Capri in Australia, as it is being sold in the UK, why not bring it here too? The more EVs, the more options we have, the better.

SUBARU UNLEASHES ‘PROJECT MIDNIGHT’ WRX

SUBARU MOTORSPORTS USA

debuted its wild ‘Project Midnight’ WRX at Goodwood, a mean-looking racer designed to be a pure tarmac speedster.

Featuring ultra-wide aerodynamic bodywork and a radically enlarged wing, the Project Midnight WRX – built with Subaru of America’s technical partner Vermont SportsCar - has a carbon fibre body and a lightened chassis that the company says makes it more than 450kg lighter than a standard WRX.

Under the skin, there’s a turbocharged and intercooled 2-litre flat-four engine producing 500kW and 920Nm of torque, revving to 9,500 rpm and spitting flames from its hood-exit exhaust. The powerplant is the most recent and top-performing evolution of Subaru Motorsports USA’s rallycross engine. The WRX sits on 18x11-inch OZ Racing Superturismo LMP magnesium wheels and 280/650R18 Yokohama ADVAN slicks.

“Subaru Motorsports USA and the team at Vermont SportsCar have delivered an absolute beast. When driving the car it clearly has rallycross roots, but the wider tires, track, and geometry give it a very unique feel and incredible grip. The ultimate driving machine; half RX, half sports car – a true joy to drive,” said Rallycross driver Scott Speed, who piloted the WRX on its quest to take out the Goodwood Timed Shootout crown.

As it turned out, the electric power of the Ford Supervan proved unbeatable with the Subaru taking a clear second place.

MTAA RELEASES ELECTION BLUEPRINT FOR A SUSTAINABLE AUTOMOTIVE FUTURE

THE MOTOR TRADES Association of Australia (MTAA) has unveiled its Election Blueprint, outlining crucial support measures for the retail automotive sector ahead of the upcoming federal election.

With the election scheduled within the next 12 months, and as Australia gears up for significant changes like fuel efficiency standards and the rise of EVs, the MTAA is advocating for expanded skills training, fair taxation, and more.

A primary concern is addressing growing skills shortages that jeopardise the ability of automotive retailers to meet the needs of Australian drivers as they embrace zero and low emission vehicles (ZLEVs).

Moreover, the MTAA says that correcting the power imbalance between the typically small to medium businesses that make up the automotive retail sector and corporate entities, including multinational automotive companies and insurers, needs to be treated as a priority.

4. Supporting automotive businesses and apprentices to invest in EV equipment and tooling

5. Strengthening the Franchising Code of Conduct

“THE MTAA ELECTION BLUEPRINT OUTLINES CRUCIAL MEASURES TO SUPPORT THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY DURING THIS PIVOTAL TIME OF TRANSITION.”

On the consumer front, the Association says a comprehensive review of federal automotive taxes is needed to ensure fairness and support the transition to ZLEVs, including reviewing the luxury car tax (LCT), fringe benefits tax (FBT), and road user charging.

The MTAA Election Blueprint highlights 10 strategic priorities:

1. Expanding automotive skills and training support

2. Updating and reinforcing the Motor Vehicle Insurance and Repair Industry Code of Conduct

3. Ensuring fair and effective implementation of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard

6. Enhancing consumer protection measures under the Australian Consumer Law

Undertaking automotive tax reforms Establishing an end-of-life vehicle program

Expanding the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information Sharing Scheme Establishing a National Approved Vehicle Examiners Scheme

“The MTAA Election Blueprint outlines crucial measures to support the automotive industry during this pivotal time of transition. We urge all political parties to consider these proposals seriously to ensure a sustainable future for Australian automotive businesses,” said Matt Hobbs, CEO of the MTAA, in a media release. Mr Hobbs also underscored the sector’s readiness to play a critical role in Australia’s transition to net zero.

“Our industry stands ready to drive the transition to net zero emissions, leveraging innovation and sustainable practices to shape a cleaner future for all Australians. Collectively, the initiatives outlined in the Blueprint will help us achieve this goal,” he said.

The MTAA Election Blueprint was developed through extensive consultations with state and territory motor trade associations, including MTA Queensland, and their members. It is available at the MTAA website.

CALL FOR ACTION SEES QLD GOV'T ESTABLISH DODGY ROADWORTHY CERTIFICATES TASKFORCE

THE QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT is to establish a dedicated taskforce and information hotline to enforce vehicle safety certificate compliance and ensure that in-person physical inspections are being carried out by an approved examiner.

MTA Queensland has long argued for the need to reform the Approved Inspection Station (AIS) scheme to tackle unscrupulous practices that undermine reputable member businesses and compromise the safety of Queenslanders, and the Association is pleased to see that its championing of such reform has resulted in concrete action.

The taskforce, the creation of which was announced in July by the Hon. Bart Mellish, Minister for Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Minister for Digital Services, will include industry stakeholders and MTA Queensland has submitted several of its members to be considered for that body.

“We commend the Government for heeding MTA Queensland’s advice in addressing this criminal behaviour and look forward to working closely with the new task force,” said Rod Camm, CEO of MTA Queensland.

Mr Camm highlighted the detrimental impact that fraudulent roadworthy certificates have on both consumers and businesses.

“This is a major issue for our industry. These “phoneworthies”, acquired without inspection via online social platforms, jeopardise legitimate businesses by linking their names to questionable certificates,” he said.

“These unethical practices not only undermine the credibility of members but also mislead unsuspecting consumers with inaccurate advice, leaving new car buyers in a difficult position.”

While further details on the task force are yet to be announced, MTA Queensland urges the Government to include the Association as industry representation, serving as a voice

“THESE “PHONEWORTHIES”, ACQUIRED WITHOUT INSPECTION VIA ONLINE SOCIAL PLATFORMS, JEOPARDISE LEGITIMATE BUSINESSES BY LINKING THEIR NAMES TO QUESTIONABLE CERTIFICATES.”

for local automotive businesses across the state.

"We acknowledge the work that TMR is doing to raise consumer awareness on how to properly obtain a roadworthy certificate, but believe it is equally important to address the concerns of the businesses that are being impacted by these unscrupulous practices,” said Mr Camm. “A collaborative approach, involving both government bodies and industry stakeholders, will ensure that the strategies implemented are practical, fair, and beneficial to all parties involved.”

• Individuals suspecting that they have been issued a safety certificate without a thorough vehicle inspection can contact TMR on (07) 3550 7035.

ALP'S PLANS SET TO DRIVE INDEPENDENT FUEL RETAILERS OUT OF THE MARKET

MTA QUEENSLAND IS deeply disappointed in the recent announcement by the Australian Labor Party, in a move that could force independent fuel retailers to exit the market.

In his recent State of the State address, Premier Steven Miles announced that if re-elected in October, he would introduce 12 new state-owned fuel stations across Brisbane and regional areas. These fuel stations, owned by Energy Queensland, would operate on a no-profit, costrecovery basis.

MTA Queensland is concerned with the lack of industry consultation involved in this decision and urges the government to consider the impact on independent fuel retailers who are already operating in a saturated market.

“While MTA Queensland acknowledges the importance of reducing costs for consumers amidst the current costof-living challenges, this is an extremely complex issue, and considerations need to be made to ensure retailers can continue to run their businesses successfully,” said Rod Camm, CEO of MTA Queensland.

“Our service station members have every right to feel outraged at this proposal. The Government is funding the introduction of competitors to the market, without any consultation from the businesses who will be most impacted. Depending on the location of these publicly owned fuel stations, smaller retailers in the area may face challenges competing with the Government's ‘no-profit’ pricing, potentially forcing them out of the market.”

“This is a short-term plan that lacks transparency and economic analysis. Taxpayers will end up covering the operational costs if these service stations run at a loss, like many independent retailers do. This is a bizarre move from the Government and raises several questions about long-term sustainability and fiscal responsibility.”

Additionally, Mr. Miles outlined the Labor Party’s proposal to restrict petrol stations from raising fuel prices more than once per day, while introducing a trial to cap the daily

“OUR SERVICE STATION MEMBERS HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO FEEL OUTRAGED AT THIS PROPOSAL . . . THIS IS A SHORT-TERM PLAN THAT LACKS TRANSPARENCY AND ECONOMIC ANALYSIS.”

increase to no more than 5 cents per litre. Retailers would also be required to disclose their pricing a day in advance. Since 2018, fuel retailers have been required to report fuel price changes as part of the Queensland Government fuel price reporting scheme, enabling motorists to compare fuel prices in the local area, find the cheapest price, and save money at the bowser. Service station operators typically benefit from the price discount cycle and play a role in driving prices down. Imposing price caps could jeopardise these businesses and drive a higher average price for consumers. With this decision set to affect many Queenslanders, MTA Queensland urges that, if re-elected in October, the Government conducts further analysis and consultation prior to proceeding with this proposal.

FORD BLUECRUISE HANDS-FREE TECH APPROVED IN EUROPE

FORD SAYS ITS handsfree driving technology, known as BlueCruise, is now available across 15 countries in Europe following its approval from the European Commission. This unlocks access to more than 133,000km of designated highways, called Blue Zones, across Europe and will allow customers to take trips across multiple countries.

BlueCruise – a Level 2 advanced driver assistance system - uses camera and sensor data from the car together with information from the navigation system and a map database to allow for this hands-free driving on approved sections of a divided highway.

When BlueCruise is engaged, the system controls the steering, acceleration, braking, lane positioning and safe distances from the vehicle ahead by monitoring the road markings, speed signs and evolving traffic conditions, from highway speeds right down to a complete halt in traffic jams. Drivers using BlueCruise in Blue Zones can drive with their hands off the steering wheel so long as they continue to pay attention to the road ahead.

To ensure drivers keep their eyes on the road while their hands are off the wheel, a driver-facing camera located below the instrument cluster checks the driver’s head position and eye gaze – even when

DRIVERS USING BLUECRUISE IN BLUE ZONES CAN DRIVE WITH THEIR HANDS OFF THE STEERING WHEEL SO LONG AS THEY CONTINUE TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE ROAD AHEAD.

they are wearing sunglasses.

The BlueCruise system had already been launched in some European nations including Britain, Spain and Germany. It has also been in use in the U.S. and Canada.

Ford says more than 420,000 BlueCruise equipped vehicles are on the road globally and more than 342 million hands-free kms have been driven using the system.

BMW WORKING WITH DEEPDRIVE

ON INNOVATIVE ELECTRIC MOTOR

BMW AND MUNICH-based company DeepDrive are set to road-test what they call a ‘revolutionary’ new electric motor. The concept features dual rotor technology that could enable super-efficient, powerful drives offering plenty of range.

After a successful pilot project with promising results on a test rig, various versions of the new drive will be installed into BMW Group models and their handling tested out on the road.

BMW says that DeepDrive’s concept more or less melds two electric motors into a single unit, creating an extremely compact drive that’s energy-efficient and has a high torque density.

In a conventional electric motor, the stator moves either an internal or an external rotor; with DeepDrive’s dual rotor concept, the stator drives both rotors simultaneously. BMW says the compact

ULTRA

PERFORMANCE HYBRID POWERTRAIN FOR NEXT FLYING SPUR

IN JUNE, BENTLEY revealed the new generation Continental GT Speed powered by its Ultra Performance Hybrid powertrain – a 575kW/1000Nm set-up that pairs a new 4-litre twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor and 25.9kWh battery.

Now, the company has said that its Flying Spur sedan will also be powered by the hybrid powertrain. The Continental GT Speed offers blistering performance, covering the 0 to 100km/h sprint in 3.2 seconds and reaching a top speed of 335km/h. One can assume the Flying Spur will have a similarly smile-inducing performance with the hybrid system

design and light weight of the unit allow for an in-wheel drive system, in which each wheel hub has its own electric motor. The technology can also be used in a traditional, centralised drive system, where a central motor block powers the vehicle.

“DeepDrive’s prototype parts largely exceeded our specifications,” says Karol Virsik, Head of Research Vehicle Concepts and Technologies at the BMW Group. “That’s really unusual at such an early stage and with a completely new technology.”

DeepDrive is now collaborating with other manufacturers and major suppliers along with BMW.

delivering almost 110kW more than the W12 engine in the current Flying Spur Speed, with an additional 100Nm of torque. It will also be able to cover at least 72km on pure electric mode.

The new Flying Spur will replace the current model, which was launched in 2019.

VW’S POWERCO AND QUANTUMSCAPE TO WORK TOGETHER ON SOLID-STATE BATTERIES

VOLKSWAGEN GROUP’S BATTERY

company PowerCo and QuantumScape have announced they have entered into an agreement to industrialise QuantumScape’s next-generation solid-state lithiummetal battery technology. Provided certain goals are met, QuantumScape will grant PowerCo the license to mass produce battery cells based on QuantumScape’s technology platform.

QuantumScape’s technology platform is based on the company’s proprietary solid-state ceramic separator, which enables the use of a pure lithium-metal anode – something the company says is a transformative innovation that is designed for exceptional energy and power density, fast charging and a robust safety profile.

Under the non-exclusive license, PowerCo can manufacture up to 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year using QuantumScape’s technology with the option to expand up to 80 GWh annually - enough to outfit approximately one million vehicles per year.

PROVIDED CERTAIN GOALS ARE MET, QUANTUMSCAPE WILL GRANT POWERCO THE LICENSE TO MASS PRODUCE BATTERY CELLS BASED ON QUANTUMSCAPE’S TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM.

NISSAN, HONDA AND MITSUBISHI MOTORS AGREE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

NISSAN, HONDA, AND Mitsubishi have announced they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to look to work together on vehicle electrification.

The new MOU is based on an agreement signed by Nissan and Honda in March which announced the beginning of a study between the companies on vehicle electrification and intelligence, including automotive software platforms and core components related to EVs, as well as complementary products.

The participation of Mitsubishi will, the companies say, not only add new knowledge and strengths but will also provide further synergies and new business opportunities.

and cities,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber in a media release. “When an Uber driver makes the switch to an EV, they can deliver up to four times the emissions benefits compared to a regular motorist, simply because they are on the road more. Many riders also tell us their first experience with an EV is on an Uber trip, and we’re excited to help demonstrate the benefits of EVs to more people around the world.”

"Nissan and Honda's discussions on a possible partnership have progressed, and we have decided to participate in this framework,” said Takao Kato, Representative Executive Officer, President and CEO, Mitsubishi Motors in a media release. “Collaboration with partners is essential in today's automotive industry, which is undergoing rapid changes due to technological innovations such as electrification and intelligence. We believe that we can discover new possibilities in a variety of fields through collaboration among the three companies.”

CHEVY UNWRAPS MOST POTENT CORVETTE EVER

CHEVROLET HAS UNLEASHED

the Corvette ZR1 – a true supercar boasting the most powerful V8 ever produced in America.

That beast of a powerplant, dubbed the LT7, is a 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged DOHC flat-plane crank V8 producing 793kW and 1123Nm. Estimated top speed is a whopping 346km/h. The company hasn’t given a 0-100km/h sprint time but does say that the ZR1 can register a sub-10 second time over the quarter-mile. That should keep every performance enthusiast smiling.

Chevrolet has listed quite a few elements that it says are unique to the monster V8. These include:

• Head castings with unique ports and a larger combustion chamber

• Valve train timing and lift profile optimised for forced induction

• Completely new intake system tuned for twin turbochargers

• CNC machined combustion chamber, exhaust and

intake ports specific to the LT7

• Dual, ported shroud, ball bearing, monoscroll (76 mm) turbochargers integrated with the exhaust manifold to reduce the volume and distance from the exhaust valve to the turbine wheel for quick response with electronic wastegates

• Intelligent anti-lag engine calibration techniques specifically for ZR1

• Added block and head machining to support turbo cooling and oiling

• Counterweight changes to account for a unique piston and unique connecting rod for the crank train

• A secondary port fuel injection system added to deliver additional fuel to support the engine’s output

To support the increase in power from the LT7 engine, Chevrolet says its

engineers made numerous changes to the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, including:

• Inner and outer input shaft upgrades

• Increased gear capacity with strength increased via shot peening for all gears

• Oil management to support increased

vehicle longitudinal and lateral capability

• Increased control valves to accommodate the higher required clutch clamp load

Aerodynamics are important in performance and the standard ZR1 chassis has a sleeker body with lower drag and a small spoiler, and includes standard carbon-fibre front splitter, rocker mouldings, side intake with integrated brake cooling, and front underwing with stall gurney deflectors. Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires wrap 20-inch front, and 21-inch rear wheels.

Braking comes courtesy of ceramic 400mm rotors and six-piston calipers up front and 390mm rotors with four pistons at the rear.

There’s an optional ZTK performance package that offers some extra wallop, and which includes a high-downforce rear wing, front dive planes, and hood Gurney lip – all woven carbon fibre. Suspension tuning incorporates stiffer springs and adds Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres.

The Corvette ZR1 is scheduled to enter production in 2025.

LUXURY AND HIGH-PERFORMANCE vehicle manufacturers will often create limited-edition models. They are always something special and, quite often, jaw-droppingly spectacular.

The grand British marque Aston Martin recently revealed a model that seems to fit this description rather well. Called the Valiant, it is a doozy - a performance

monster with some beautiful styling. Originally conceived from a personal commission from Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team driver Fernando Alonso for a lightweight, more extreme, race car-inspired version of the Aston Martin Valour, the Valiant became a limited-edition special designed and crafted by the company’s bespoke

division, Q by Aston Martin.

. . .

The result is a brute of a car – aimed at delivering thrills on the track and the roadpowered by a 556kW/753Nm twin-turbo V12 mated to a six-speed manual transmission that features a number of unique engineering highlights to reduce weight and dial-in the chassis for serious track use.

Aston Martin says that a 3D-printed rear subframe saves 3kg with no reduction in stiffness, while a magnesium torque tube reduces mass at the centre point of the car by 8.6kg. Lightweight 21-inch magnesium wheels – with 275/35 front and 325/30 rear tyres - improve steering response and wheel control, reducing unsprung mass by 14kg. A motorsport-spec lithium-ion battery has been fitted to save a further 11.5kg.

Multimatic Adaptive Spool Valve (ASV) dampers - capable of simultaneously adjusting each damper to one of thirty-two discreet damper curves in less than six milliseconds – provide plenty of scope for tuning ride and handling characteristics. Carbon Ceramic brakes measuring

410mm x 38mm front and 360mm x 32mm rear deliver stopping power.

The Valiant’s dramatic bodywork uses plenty of lightweight carbon fibre, with the design aimed at generating downforce and minimising drag. A deep front splitter helps pin the nose to the ground, while multi-layer end planes smooth airflow around the front wheels. Directly above the splitter there’s a full-width carbon fibre grille which increases the flow of cooling air to the engine.

Other functional features include heavily scalloped side fenders and carbon fibre aero discs fitted to the 21-inch wheels. Broad side sills and upswept vortex generators located ahead of the rear wheels smooth airflow along the flanks, reducing turbulence, drag and lift. At the back, a sharp Kamm tail and upswept deck lid are topped by a prominent fixed wing. There’s also a rear diffuser.

On the inside, the two-seat cockpit a touch of luxury sees the use of exposed satin-finish carbon fibre and finelytailored, lightweight upholstery.

THE VALIANT’S DRAMATIC BODYWORK USES PLENTY

OF LIGHTWEIGHT CARBON FIBRE WITH THE DESIGN AIMED AT GENERATING DOWNFORCE AND MINIMISING DRAG.

There’s a new steering wheel and a cutaway in the transmission tunnel exposes the gear linkage running to the six-speed transaxle – a nice touch.

With use on the track being a focus of the Valiant, it features a built-in half-cage and Recaro Podium seats. The half-cage provides the anchor point to allow 4-point race harnesses to be fitted.

Production of the Valiant is limited to just 38 cars globally with all fully allocated.

HYUNDAI’S SPORTY I30N GETS SAFTEY & TECH UPDATES

HYUNDAI’S I30 N has received a series of updates for 2025, including a refreshed look, new technology and enhanced safety equipment.

On the outside, the 2025 i30 N has a new matte-grey colour scheme for its 19-inch forged wheels, a new radiator grille design and red trimming on the side skirting, and new red front bumper inserts. Hyundai badging is now matte black at the rear, while a flat-style H sits in the meshed grille.

Inside, the addition of Hyundai’s 10.25inch Supervision instrument cluster, which joins the existing 10.25-inch multimedia touchscreen (with integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Satellite Navigation and DAB+ radio) giving the driver clearer access to their key performance metrics such as turbo boost gauges, a g-force meter, lap timer, and digital speedometer.

There’s also an updated seat design for the suede-leather-and-Alcantara N bucket seats, and a new gloss-black finish around the gear shift.

Connectivity is updated too, with the addition of three USB-C charge points, one in the front and two for the backseat passengers, while rain-sensing wipers and an Electrochromic Mirror are both now standard features.

A new interior feature sees the addition to the steering wheel of a red NGS (N Grin Shift) button, a design feature adopted from the i30 Sedan N and Ioniq 5 N. NGS gives the driver access to the car’s maximum power and torque for 20-second spells.

Active safety systems include updated Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), which uses front radar sensors and a windshield-mounted camera to scan for cars, pedestrians and now cyclists. Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Rear Occupant Alert, Driver Attention Warning and Multi-Collision Braking also appear as standard features.

Also introduced to the 2025 i30N is Hyundai Bluelink connected car services and Over-The-Air (OTA) software update capability. Bluelink features include Automatic Collision Notification, Emergency Call (SOS) function, Connected Routing - live traffic updates, Alert services including geo-fencing, valet, speed & time alerts, Remote control of climate and vehicle functions, Vehicle settings management and more.

The 2025 i30 N – scheduled to launch in Australia this month - is powered by a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 206kW and 392Nm. There’s a choice between a six-speed manual transmission or eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.

TOYOTA REVEALS UPGRADED GR COROLLA

TOYOTA HAS TAKEN the wraps off its upgraded GR Corolla, with the new five-door hot hatch due to arrive in Australia in the last quarter of 2024.

A new powertrain pairs an eight-speed GAZOO Racing direct automatic transmission (DAT) with an upgraded version of the company's turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine.

Maximum power remains at 221kW while the engine gains an additional 30Nm of torque, generating a maximum output of 400Nm. This is fed to all four wheels through the GR FOUR all-wheel drive system. The automatic transmission is tuned for track driving with paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.

Along with the new powertrain performance, Toyota says it has redesigned the front bumper of the GR Corolla to optimise the balance of cooling performance and aerodynamic efficiency.

The front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspension has also been retuned to improve dynamic handling, particularly when accelerating through corners.

Inside, the GR Corolla maintains a high level of standard equipment, big-bolstered leather-accented and suede seats, and sports trim that mark the car as a highperformance GR vehicle.

More information and pricing will be provided closer to launch in late 2024.

NEW AC COBRA BREAKS COVER

CAR ENTHUSIASTS, AND performance car enthusiasts in particular, will know the name AC Cars. The British manufacturer is often associated with that of Ford and Carroll Shelby, the American racing legend who took the company’s AC Ace two-door roadster, stuffed a honking Ford V8 into it, and created the iconic AC Shelby Cobra.

AC continues to produce cars and recently released the first images of something new and quite awesome, the AC Cobra GT Coupe - the first ever official AC Cobra coupe set for production.

Debuting with the Clubsport Edition, of which just 99 units are slated for production, the Cobra GT Coupe has an aluminium chassis and carbon-fibre body, and underneath that brilliantly executed retro skin is a V8 powertrain pumping out 586kW. The company said these first models will be delivered to clients from the end of 2025 onwards.

The Clubsport Edition will be followed by the series production coupe, available with either a normally aspirated 335kW V8 or 537kW supercharged option.

With the same dimensions to the existing roadster, the new coupe has a wheelbase of 2570mm, and is 4225mm long and 1980mm wide. AC Cars says it will feature ‘near perfect 50:50 weight balance front to rear, with a low centre of gravity.’ Kerb weight will be confirmed ahead of production, but the Clubsport Edition has a set target of under 1450kg. While there is no word yet on

NEW HYBRID BMW M5 TO LAND THIS YEAR

THE

LATEST ITERATION of the BMW M5 Sedan will launch in Australia in Q4 this year.

The new, seventh-generation M5 will, for the first time, be available as an electrified variant with the M Hybrid system pairing a 430kW/750Nm 4.4-litre M TwinPower Turbo V8 with an electric motor, integrated in the transmission, pumping out 145kW and 280Nm. Total system output is 535kW and 1000Nm.

The combination of the petrol and electric drive units – with power sent through an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and electronically controlled Active M Differential – means this M5 variant will deliver some stonking performance.

BMW says 100km/h is reached in 3.5 seconds, while Australian-delivered models will achieve a top speed of 305km/h due to the offering of the M Driver’s Package as standard equipment.

The sports exhaust system of the new BMW M5 integrates electrically controlled, continuously adjustable flaps to provide a note that is channelled through four tailpipes.

BMW SAYS THE NEW M5 CAN ACCELERATE TO 100KM/H IN 3.5 SECONDS, WHILE AUSTRALIAN-DELIVERED MODELS WILL ACHIEVE A TOP SPEED OF 305KM/H . . .

The electric motor can propel the BMW M5 to a top speed of 140km/h, while the 18.6kWh battery enables an electric-only driving range of between 67 to 69 kilometres on the WLTP testing cycle.

BMW says chassis dynamics are tuned to effectively put all the M5’s ample power to the road. There’s a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle and adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. 20- and 21-inch M light alloy wheels feature at the front and rear.

The interior offers a combination of luxury and high-performance styling, integrating cutting-edge tech such as the latest version of BMW iDrive running Operating System 8.5.

There’s a newly designed flat-bottomed steering wheel, Merino leather trim, the BMW Interaction Bar and ambient lighting with M-specific interior lighting including Welcome and Goodbye Animation.

A control panel on the centre console houses a model-specific composition of buttons that allow the driver to tailor the driving experience to their preferences. This includes the Setup switch that enables configuration of the drive system, Drivelogic (transmission), chassis, steering, braking and M xDrive. Different M HYBRID modes can also be selected via the centre console.

A new BOOST mode, enabled by a long pull of the left gearshift paddle, delivers

maximum thrust between the speeds of 30km/h and 150km/h for bursts of acceleration.

The list of driver assistance, safety, and comfort features is long and topnotch, and includes Driving Assistant Professional and Parking Assistant Professional, wireless charging tray, interior camera, an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, M Compound Brakes, Blue (Red or Black as no-cost option), Automatic Tailgate, front and rear heated seats, and much more. Pricing for the new BMW M5 sedan will see it come in at $259,900 (excluding on-road costs).

ANOTHER BUMPER MONTH FOR NEW-VEHICLE SALES IN JULY

THE NEW-VEHICLE MARKET

remains strong with Federal Chamber of Industries (FCAI) and VFACTS reporting sales numbers of 99,486 last month – a record for July. This result is 2.7 per cent higher than the July 2023 result which was the previous highest on record.

Sales in Queensland increased 6.2 per cent to 20,937; NSW was up 2.9 per cent to 30,361; Northern Territory was up 4.9 per cent to 947; South Australia increased 4.7 per cent to 6,921; Tasmania had a decrease of 12 per cent to 1,564; Victoria decreased 1.6 per cent to 26,667 and Western Australia increased 8.9 per cent to 10,671. The ACT was down 1.4 per cent on July 2023 to 1,418.

Toyota was the market leader with sales of 22,705 in July, followed by Mazda (8,476), Ford (7,749,) Kia (6,620) and Hyundai (6,021).

The Toyota RAV4 was Australia’s top selling vehicle with sales of 5,933 in July followed by Ford Ranger (4,915), Toyota HiLux (4,747), Toyota Corolla (2,688) and Toyota Landcruiser (2,464).

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said the result would have exceeded 100,000 if Tesla and Polestar sales were included in the VFACTS numbers.

“This is a remarkable achievement in an economy featuring widespread cost of living pressures. It was also interesting to note that while sales in the Business and Government segments were up 13.7 per cent and 37.5 per cent respectively, Private sales were down 4.2 per cent.”

Mr Weber added there were several

“. . . SALES OF HYBRID VEHICLES ARE UP 88.4 PER CENT AND PLUG-IN HYBRID VEHICLES ARE UP 128.9 PER CENT . . .”

important points coming from the July result.

“Consistent with trends in many overseas markets, sales of hybrid vehicles are up 88.4 per cent and plug-in hybrid vehicles are up 128.9 per cent compared with July 2023. Sales of battery electric vehicles – with the inclusion of the reported Tesla (2592) and Polestar (103) results – are currently at 6.6 per cent of the market, down from 7 per cent in 2023.

“The hybrid performance is highlighted by the fact that the Toyota RAV 4 was the top-selling vehicle for the month ahead of Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux. Most RAV 4 sales are hybrids," said Mr Weber.

“While the first seven months of 2024 have exceeded expectations, the industry remains cautious about the future pending the implementation of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard coupled with the economic conditions.”

AUNINTENTIONAL ABANDONMENT RESULTS IN FAIR DISMISSAL

N EMPLOYEE WHO was remanded by the police and was unable to work for three weeks lost his unfair dismissal claim as the Fair Work Commission found he had abandoned his employment.

The employee said the police confiscated his phone and that in his one phone call he had asked a friend to notify the employer of his situation. However, this never occurred. During the time he was remanded, the employer was not contacted.

In hindsight, a reasonable explanation for failing to attend work existed. However, based on the facts reasonably known to the employer at the time, the dismissal was found not to be unfair within the meaning of the legislation.

The employer claimed that when the employee failed to show up for work it called him multiple times and visited his home for a welfare check. It then sent a letter about possible repudiatory conduct. When it failed to hear from him, it sent a further letter accepting he had abandoned the employment contract.

Upon leaving remand, the employee tried numerous times to get his job back

disputing he had abandoned his job. This Decision highlighted that it is not entirely the employer's responsibility to investigate an employee's whereabouts and noted that dismissing them for unexplained failure to attend rostered shifts was sound and defensible when there is a valid reason and due process is followed.

MTA Institute News

IT’S BEEN ANOTHER busy month here at the MTA Institute hosting all our trainer/ assessors from around the regions for the first of our two bi-annual professional development conferences. All the detail on this event can be found in this month’s Motor Trader from page 76 so make sure you have a look at what we all got up to. If you weren’t already aware, the MTA Institute is the largest Industry owned Automotive registered training provider (RTO) in the State with over 3000 students enrolled across Queensland. Part of running the RTO is to keep abreast of the State and Federal Governments skilling agendas. This month, I attended a presentation by Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DEBST) around Queensland’s Good Job, Great Training Skills Strategy 2024-2028. Its aim is to provide pathways into good jobs for Queenslanders while delivering priority skills in traditional and emerging industries so our communities, industries and economy can thrive. The vision is to make Queensland a job-creating economic powerhouse driven by skilled Queenslanders. The focus areas are:

. . . GOVERNMENTS AT ALL LEVELS AND OF ALL PERSUASIONS CONSIDER SKILLING AS A CRITICAL SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC ENABLER WHICH THEY SUPPORT NOW AND INTO THE DISTANT FUTURE.

highly skilled jobs.

• Deliver training across Queensland and skills for local economies.

• Build on the strengths of our worldclass training system by promoting opportunities offered by training.

• Get more Queenslanders into highly skilled jobs quicker.

• Support Queenslanders to access the lifelong benefits of training for good,

• Focus on economic priorities, local needs and student outcomes so our training system delivers for Queensland. What does that all mean for us here in the Institute and the automotive industry in general? In short, governments at all levels and of all persuasions consider skilling as a critical social and economic enabler which they support now and into the distant future. Be sure to have a look at both the strategies as they will drive the skilling agenda moving forward. The Queensland Skills Strategy can be found here and the National Skills Agreement can be found here. Happy reading.

Apprentice of the Month: July 2024

APPRENTICE:

BRYDON DENNIS

WORKPLACE:

AUTO GIANT, BRENDALE

APPRENTICESHIP:

LIGHT VEHICLE MECHANICAL

BRYDON DENNIS IS the MTA

Institute Apprentice of the month for July 2024.

The 26-year-old is about to start the third year of his light vehicle apprenticeship working for Tony Fasano at the modern, advanced Auto Giant workshop in Brendale, north Brisbane. He is also on the fast track to finish his training early - a result of his ability, enthusiasm, and dedication to pursue an automotive career and to learn as much as he can on that journey.

“. . . I REALISED THAT I WASN'T GOING TO GET ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO GET INTO SOMETHING LIKE THIS. YOU JUST HAVE TO JUMP ON THE OPPORTUNITY SOMETIMES.”

While he came a little late to the trade, Brydon always had an interest and passion for cars and harboured an ambition to work in the automotive industry from early on. However, the opportunity to pursue that ambition took a while to arrive, and he worked a number of jobs prior to being taken on by Auto Giant. Those jobs did, however, provide a good grounding when the move to the workshop came.

“I'd always worked in factories before working here, and in those factories I had the opportunity to work on a lot of different machines and mechanical and electrical hydraulics, and got a taste of working on motors,” said Brydon. “I worked on my own car too, including rebuilding the motor, and that also helped to get me in the door here at Auto Giant. Tony looked at all that and saw something in me and took me on.”

Leaving one career to start again as an apprentice in another is a big step, but when the chance comes, said Brydon, you have to take it. Given a tip by a friend of the opportunity at Auto Giant, he reached out to Tony to see if he could take that step.

“One of my good friends used to work here, and he sort of gave me a heads-up and said to send through my resume. And then I kept on pestering Tony until he got back to me with the sign-up papers,” said Brydon.

“At the time, I realised that I wasn't going to get another opportunity to get into something like this. You just have to jump on the opportunity sometimes.”

With Auto Giant offering services for all makes and models of vehicle, Brydon is getting to learn in a firstclass workshop environment, and he likes to push and challenge himself to get everything out of the experience.

“I enjoy pretty much everything that we do here, but I do prefer doing big engine jobs and getting into the nitty gritty stuff. The diagnostic work really interests me as well,” he said. “The only way to get the knowledge under your belt is to work on everything. I always try and take the bigger jobs, if I can, to learn more and more.”

While he is moving swiftly through his apprenticeship training, Brydon recognises that the automotive industry is evolving in such a way that training will be a major feature of his career moving forward, including when it comes to electrified vehicles. So, more training is definitely on the cards. Beyond that, there’s the potential to establish a really successful career with Auto Giant as it too evolves and expands.

“Tony wants to have more shops, so there are opportunities there and that would be a great future,” said Brydon. “In the meantime, I'm looking at doing an introductory course into hybrid and electric vehicles with MTAQ once I've finished my apprenticeship. I need to get my head around that because we're not going have a choice in 10 years or so. Also, as soon as I finish this apprenticeship, hopefully I can start the sign-up process to do my heavy vehicle apprenticeship, and I’d also look at doing auto electrical as well.”

TMTA QUEENSLAND’S SCHOOL TO WORK TRANSITION STRATEGY

HE MTA QUEENSLAND team has been travelling far and wide across Queensland, getting the word out to school students across the state about the opportunities available to them in the automotive industry.

Whether it’s through our partnership in Capricorn trade show events, attending and presenting at regional career expos, or our delivery of career taster activities through school partnerships, the MTA Queensland team has been all over Queensland throughout 2024 connecting with students, parents and school guidance counselors talking about careers in automotive and engaging students in interactive industry-related experiences.

I have been really pleased with our efforts so far in this field. It’s challenging but rewarding, especially when we see through these events and activities that a direct connection is made between students and employers and this transitions to work experience and apprenticeships.

We will continue to work on improving our approach to engaging students and parents, and seeking support from members, especially in regional events run in partnership with Capricorn.

So far in 2024 we have been to Roma, Toowoomba, Cairns, Bundaberg, Brisbane, and the Sunshine Coast with Capricorn, as well as to Gladstone, Rockhampton, Townsville, Maryborough, the Gold Coast, Ipswich and Logan, attending and presenting at other career expos as well.

In September, we will be in Hervey Bay, and finish with the final Capricorn regional event in Mackay in October.

As you can see, we are covering a fair chunk of the state!

There are plenty of great kids out there looking for a start in our industry. We need to keep making connections with schools and other stakeholders and get in front of them and help you, our members, get in front of them as well, especially through our Capricorn partnership which will continue in 2025.

Keep an eye on the weekly bulletin for information, and make sure you register and get involved in MTA Queensland/Capricorn events that come to your region.

• The School to Work Industry program is funded by the Queensland Government as part of the Good people. Good jibs: Queensland Workforce Strategy 2022-2032.

UPSKILLING THE AUTO INDUSTRY WITH MTA QUEENSLAND’S VET TRAINER SCHOLARSHIP

MTA QUEENSLAND HAS opened applications for the next round of its VET Trainer Scholarship program.

Launched in 2021 to help address the industry’s skill shortage, the VET Trainer Scholarship provides two ambitious technicians the opportunity to undertake a TAE40122 - Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, valued at over $3,000.

Designed to teach the skills and knowledge to deliver training in the vocational education and training sector, participants will learn skills in designing, conducting, and assessing, while also receiving knowledge on how to facilitate and evaluate the impacts of various programs.

In each round, one female and one male candidate will have the chance to undertake the highly sought after course and take the next step in their career.

“MTA Queensland is dedicated to advancing careers within the industry and has successfully supported twelve individuals to achieve their goal of becoming qualified automotive trainers,” said Rod Camm, MTA Group CEO.

“As technology continues to evolve, the need for highly skilled professionals in the automotive field becomes increasingly critical. By investing in the education and training of automotive professionals, MTA Queensland is playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of the industry, ensuring it remains robust, competitive, and capable of addressing the challenges of tomorrow.”

“MTA QUEENSLAND IS DEDICATED TO ADVANCING CAREERS WITHIN THE INDUSTRY AND HAS SUCCESSFULLY SUPPORTED TWELVE INDIVIDUALS TO ACHIEVE THEIR GOAL OF BECOMING QUALIFIED AUTOMOTIVE TRAINERS.”

The scholarship is open to all Queensland-based, trade-qualified automotive professionals who possess at least five years post-apprenticeship experience in any of the following automotive areas – Light Vehicle, Heavy Vehicle, Auto Electrical, Motorcycle, Mobile Plant, Agricultural, Parts Interpreting, Outdoor Power Equipment, Automotive Body Repair & Refinishing, and Underbody. Applications will close 11:59pm on 31 August 2024.

RECENTLY, I ORGANISED

the delivery of lunchtime webinar sessions focused on skilled migration. This was in response to the many enquiries I received from businesses seeking more information on the topic. My thinking around the webinars was to get the experts in front of you and provide all the important information you require.

WHERE CAN I GET MY NEXT WORKER FROM?

It was great to see so many businesses across Queensland join us in this webinar series and we hope that by delivering sessions such as this we can help you find the people you need.

This leads me to my next workforce planning topic: employing young people in the workplace.

This issue comes up when I am in the field talking with automotive employers. The message I hear is ‘young people are different these days to what they were when I was young’. That is true. They certainly are!

Some employers are reporting to me that they feel a bit out of touch and want to make sure that when they employ young people in their workplaces, they can communicate effectively with them and have a workplace culture that is supportive and understands their needs and future ambitions. Having a focus such as this will mean that any issues that might occur can be dealt with before it’s too late and the workplace relationship sours.

To try and help you, I will be organising further webinars, with the next series to focus on this important topic. Once again, I will organise some expert presenters to talk to you and get them to give you targeted information that will help you engage younger workers in a more effective manner.

SOME EMPLOYERS ARE REPORTING TO ME THAT THEY FEEL A BIT OUT OF TOUCH AND WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WHEN THEY EMPLOY YOUNG PEOPLE IN THEIR WORKPLACES, THEY CAN COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY WITH THEM . . ..

In closing, I want to hear from more of you, the business owners. Are there other workforce related topics that you would like me to focus on that will help you attract and retain the talent you need? If so, get in touch, I would love to hear from you and set up more engaging lunch time webinars to help you address your workforce challenges.

WORKFORCE ADVISOR PROGRAM HELPS BRING

POSITIVE CHANGE TO FNQ BUSINESS

PETER AND MARION Wandel from Peter’s Offroad & Outdoor have built a successful business in Far North Queensland. Established in Cairns in 1994, Peter’s Offroad & Outdoor offers a wide range of services and products – including Polaris ATVs, scooters, mowers, sprayers and spray tanks, battery products, power equipment and spare parts. Brands that the business offers include Argo, Husqvarna, RATO, and Scag amongst others.

After 30 years building their business, Peter and Marion began looking for easier ways to handle internal Human Resources (HR) requirements and improve on an ageing system that was proving time consuming to use.

A meeting with MTA Queensland northern region Area Manager Rebecca McReight would provide the catalyst for that upgrade. Rebecca suggested that MTA Queensland’s Industry Workforce Advisor (IWA) program might provide appropriate advice and assistance. Subsequent conversations with IWA Kelvin Millar would result in Peter and Marion applying for the State Government-funded $5000 HR grant and, after completing a workforce business plan with Kelvin’s help, enlisting HR consultancy business HR Dynamics to develop a strategy to bring their systems up to modern standards.

Working with Kelvin and MTA Queensland to apply successfully for the grant and be guided through the planning process was, said Peter, a great experience for both he and Marion.

“THE WORKFORCE PLANNING PROGRAM HAS BEEN GREAT, NOT ONLY FOR OUR BUSINESS, BUT FOR US PERSONALLY.”

workforce challenges, diversify their workforces, and support workforce and productivity growth.

While the HR challenge for Peter’s Offroad & Outdoor appears to have been met, the relationship with MTA Queensland will continue.

“The workforce planning program has been great, not only for our business, but for us personally,” he said. “Kelvin was really helpful and helped map out what we need to work on. We feel far more in control of our business now and not so frustrated.”

For Kelvin, the result highlights the benefits that the IWA program can bring to the industry and to businesses and owners who are always busy and looking for ways to streamline and simplify their workload. Important to note too is that Peter’s Offroad & Outdoor are not members of MTA Queensland, highlighting the Association’s efforts through the IWA program to help all automotive businesses address

“Working with Peter and Marion in conjunction with HR Dynamics has been a pleasure,” said Kelvin. “I look forward to a field trip to Cairns in the coming months to meet in person and discuss any potential issues with which I may be able to assist.”

PEDDERS OFFERS STUDENTS INSIGHT ON INDUSTRY CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

THERE AREN’T MANY names as well known in the Australian automotive industry as Pedders. The company that is, perhaps, best known for its work with suspension system components but which also produces brake systems, lift kits and a wide variety of other parts, was founded in 1950 in Melbourne and now has over 120 outlets across Australia and is a global concern.

Like all companies involved with Australia’s automotive industry, Pedders is keen to see the next generation of technicians and automotive professionals progress and move the industry forward.

Recognising that need saw the company team up with MTA Queensland recently to expand an evening event being held at its Lawnton, north Brisbane, facility to include a presentation to students of the career opportunities and prospects attainable with Pedders and the wider industry.

The event included a tour of the impressive Lawnton workshop and

warehouse, while Scott Pedder, Managing Director of Pedders and one of the nation’s top rally drivers, was also on hand to speak to the students. A special treat for the youngsters was the opportunity to take a good look around Scott Pedder’s rally car - a top-spec Skoda Fabia R5 – which he is piloting in this year’s Australian Rally Championship. 25 students attended the event,

For Daryn Brims, Director of the DPD Group which has four Pedders stores across the southeast, including the Lawnton site which hosted the event, it was a tremendously positive evening. The company has even taken on an attendee from the event as an apprentice.

“It was a very successful night,” he said. “Scott Pedder addressed the whole group first about the careers and opportunities within the automotive industry and gave some examples of the Pedders shock absorber service, business, and scope. Then we gave them a workshop tour, a warehouse tour, and a shop tour and, as we are in the retail industry, spoke about the importance of being able to

communicate clearly with customers and your workmates . . . We were also lucky to have our state trainer there to explain his career pathway at Pedders.

“It was a success for the students and it’s always good to get together with MTA Queensland and work to enhance our trade.”

Feedback from the students was, not surprisingly, also very positive.

"I was just hoping to learn more about certain cars; how they work and how to pull them apart, fix them, and put them back together . . .” said Rachel Buchanan, a Year 10 student from Ipswich State High School. “It was good knowing how things work and how different industries do different things. It was good for them to suggest you walk in and talk to the person in charge and look at apprenticeships or jobs. They were also very welcoming to all genders, especially the females."

current workforce and skills challenge by building strong relationships with schools and industry partners to showcase the exciting and varied career opportunities within the industry. The success of this initial Pedders event has been such that more are planned in the future.

“We've spoken about doing more events in the 2025 calendar,” said Mr Brims. “More of these nights is what we need so we can get in front of young students and showcase opportunitites in our industry.”

MTAI TRAINERS GATHER FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE

THE MTA INSTITUTE is the largest private provider of automotive apprenticeship training in Queensland. With more than 3000 apprentices on its books, the Institute takes its responsibilities to them, and to the future of the industry, very seriously.

The Institute offers a delivery model that sees apprentices receive training at their employers’ businesses. This means its trainers are located throughout Queensland and often, by virtue of the size of the state, working semi-independently.

While every trainer has the skills and experience, as well as the administration and resources support of the Institute, to deliver the very best learning experience for apprentices, staying at the leading-edge of automotive education delivery entails regular professional development.

over three days that provide updates and upskilling opportunities across a variety of areas.

“We want to make sure our trainers are the most competent and confident trainers they can be, and that means we give them the tools

“WE WANT TO MAKE SURE OUR TRAINERS ARE THE MOST COMPETENT AND CONFIDENT TRAINERS THEY CAN BE, AND THAT MEANS WE GIVE THEM THE TOOLS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SO THAT THEY CAN BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF THEIR TEACHING AND TRAINING CRAFT.”

For the MTA Institute, this is partly achieved by bringing the trainers to its head office in Brisbane twice a year – once in July and again in December – to attend a series of presentations and workshops and professional development so that they can be at the forefront of their teaching and training craft,” said Marcello Riotto, Director of the MTA Institute.

At the July 2024 trainers conference,

workshops included those focusing on developing vehicle technology - such as hydrogen tech and the continued progress of vehicle electrification - as well as the digital communications and administrative functions that allow the Institute to deliver the streamlined, efficient training program in the manner that it does.

“At this conference, one thing we are focusing on is a refresher on depowering electric vehicles,” said Marcello. “We did that in 2014 and again in 2018 and we pride ourselves at being at the forefront of that sector. What has happened is our trainers are starting to see demand in the apprenticeship model to have apprentices doing depower and we want to make sure our trainers are up to speed with that . . . so that when they deliver the training,

they are absolutely topped up and to go in terms of the technical requirements, knowledge, and skills.”

Another element that has been a feature of the type of one-on-one training that the MTA Institute delivers is the close relationship that can be built between trainer and apprentice. This can mean that trainers become more than just a teacher to their student, but be a sounding board, mentor, and advisor.

“One of the sessions we are providing is around being an ‘accidental counsellor’,” said Marcello. “When we are out there doing our business, at times we have students that may need additional assistance that may not necessarily be around the training. Our trainers then automatically become counsellors, which we are happy to do, so we are delivering a session on how to navigate that and become that accidental counselor.”

As important as professional development may be, just as vital for the Institute’s

trainers is the chance to get together, network with each other, talk about the issues and challenges they face, share the solutions they find, and relax as a group.

“Bringing the trainers down twice a year allows us to build a culture and work as a team . . . That helps with the overall development of our people,” said Marcello. “We want to look after our people, so they don’t feel they’re remote and isolated. That is an important part of the trainers’ meeting agenda – to be together as a group and as an organisation.”

MTA INSTITUTE TRAINER RECOGNISED WITH QLD TRAINING AWARD WIN

MTA INSTITUTE TRAINER

Gareth Hartley has won the Queensland Training Awards VET Teacher or Trainer of the Year category for the Central Queensland region.

Gareth received the honour at a special awards evening event held at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre on July 6.

Based in Mackay, Gareth has more than 30 years’ experience within the automotive industry and, having joined the MTA Institute in 2021, delivers training to apprentices in a region that stretches from Serena in the south through to Bowen in the north and out west to Moranbah. His knowledge and skills enable him to train apprentices across a wide range of disciplines – Automotive Electrical, Heavy Commercial Mechanical, Light Vehicle Mechanical, Mobile Plant, Agricultural Mechanical and Automotive Sales.

He was, he said, extremely proud, if somewhat surprised, to have been recognised with the regional award and, a few days after the event, it was still sinking in.

MTA

Institute trainer Gareth Hartley

“. . . IT'S SOMETHING OF WHICH I AM VERY PROUD BECAUSE QUEENSLAND IS A MASSIVE STATE AND TO TAKE OUT THE TOP PRIZE FOR CENTRAL QUEENSLAND IS A MASSIVE GOAL.”

“I was totally in shock. I honestly didn’t think I would get that far,” he said. “I was amazed to get to the to the top three, and I thought, yeah, that's pretty well done.

“It still feels a little bit unreal . . . It's something of which I am very proud because Queensland is a massive state and to take out the top prize for Central Queensland is a massive goal.”

Being a trainer, said Gareth, often included being more than someone who imparts information. Everyone’s lives are unique, and their circumstances may mean a trainer has to offer more to support a particular student.

“They can come from broken homes, have trouble reading and writing properly – there can be all sort of things going on in the background,” said Gareth. “Quite often you’re the only

male role model that the student might have. You have to come in with an open mind.”

This commitment to his students has seen Gareth recognised with awards before. Last year, he was named as the MTA Institute Trainer of the Year, and the continued recognition with the Central Queensland award comes as no surprise to Marcello Riotto, Director of the MTA Institute.

“Gareth is fully committed to his craft, his students/employers and industry in general. He doesn't do things by halves, nor does he shy away from a challenge,” he said. “He has only been with the Institute for a relatively short time but now has a leadership role in his region.”

Gareth will now move forward as a finalist for the statewide VET Teacher of Trainer of the Year award, pitting him against winners of other regional finals. The winner will be announced at an event to be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on the 7th of September. Gareth is philosophical about his chances.

“At the end of the day, no matter what happens, you end up in the top seven trainers within the state . . . when you look at the total number of teacher/trainers within the program, it's pretty phenomenal,” he said.

He will not be short of support on the night. MTA Queensland had a number of representatives supporting Gareth in Gladstone and that number will swell with the state final to be held in Brisbane.

“We'll have a significant support crew present at the state awards in September as Brisbane is in our backyard,” said Marcello. “We're excited for the state finals and wish Gareth all the best, but he's already a winner in our eyes!”

CONCEPT BST

POLESTAR, THE SWEDISH manufacturer of electric vehicles (EVs) that is part of China’s Geely Holding company, was a participant at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and took the opportunity to reveal its newest creation – the Concept BST.

framed by an aggressive front splitter and the motorsport theme continues with an extreme rear wing and a design some bespoke racing-livery inspired graphics.

The Concept BST is reminiscent of the Polestar 6 convertible concept that was revealed a couple of years ago and which is scheduled for production and to be launched in 2026. While Polestar hasn’t given details of the Concept BST powertrain or performance, that Polestar 6 comes with an 800-volt architecture and a dual motor set-up punching out up to 650kW and 900Nm. It has a targeted sprint time of 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h.

BST’s sleek exterior, one can assume that it will be at least as potent as the Polestar 6 and, like that car, we keep our fingers crossed that this is another concept from which a production model will emerge.

“This car is a demonstration of how far we can push our performance brandPolestar turned up to 11, if you will - and a demonstration of how we could apply the BST formula to our line-up in the future,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.

That bodes rather well for the future.
