NASH EDITOR
HELLO AND WELCOME
to the first edition of Motor Trader for 2025. It is a depressingly familiar story that we should start the year with news of communities across Queensland reeling from the effects of a severe weather event. This year, the region around Townsville and Mackay has been on the receiving end of some quite astonishing downpours with the resultant flooding causing immense amounts of damage and distress.
MTA Queensland will help where it can and there is some useful information and links to resources on page 6 of this edition. Keep an eye out for updates and more info through our weekly
newsletter and other channels. In industry news this month, we have some information around the Australian Government support for electric vehicle (EV) uptake through a low-interest loan program (see page 14 for that) as well as more on the DRIVEN charger Rebate Stream grant program available to automotive industry businesses (see page 15). There's also news about discounted loans available to farmers and agri-businesses (page 16); and of a developing and strengthening partnership between MTA Queensand and the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) that will see a more potent voice evolve to support dealers (see page 29 for more).
I hope you enjoy this month's edition and if you have some news you'd like to share, or have a classic vehicle you'd like to see featured in the magazine, get in touch and let me know.
Cheers
Jonathan Nash, Editor jonathann@mtaq.com.au
MTA Queensland welcomes the following new members
MTA INSTITUTE TRAINERS GATHER FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE
CAMM
AS WE MOVE into the new year, MTA Queensland is dedicated to understanding and addressing the evolving needs of the automotive industry. A key way we are achieving this is by engaging directly with businesses. In the final weeks of January, I had the opportunity to travel across Queensland, meeting with members to gain insights into the services they need and the industry changes they are seeking.
A significant milestone during this period was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Australian Automotive Dealers Association (AADA). This partnership strengthens our commitment to enhancing cooperation between the two organisations and ensures greater support for Queensland’s automotive franchise dealers. You can read more about this exciting partnership on page 27.
THESE PRODUCTIVE MEETINGS ALLOWED US TO EXPLORE AREAS OF COLLABORATION WITH THE NEW GOVERNMENT.
MTA Queensland also met with the Hon. Brent Mickelberg MP, Minister for Transport and Main Roads, and the Hon. Rosslyn Bates MP, Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment, and Training. These productive meetings allowed us to explore areas of collaboration with the new government. We discussed key issues affecting the automotive industry, including workforce development, infrastructure planning, and policy changes that can help drive the sector’s growth. We look forward to continuing these important conversations and building a strong, collaborative relationship with the government to support Queensland's automotive businesses.
For nearly 100 years, MTA Queensland has been a trusted advocate for automotive businesses across the state. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with The Motoring Chronicles to discuss the challenges our members continue to face, including workforce shortages, regulatory changes, and the growing emphasis on sustainability in the automotive sector. Listen to the full conversation on page 23.

IN RESPONSE TO the devastating flooding affecting North Queensland, MTA Queensland is ready to ensure that members have the support and information needed to navigate through these challenging circumstances. Be it because a business is directly affected or is dealing with disruptions, MTA Queensland is here to assist to help to work through the crisis.
BE IT BECAUSE A BUSINESS IS DIRECTLY AFFECTED OR IS DEALING WITH DISRUPTIONS, MTA QUEENSLAND IS HERE TO ASSIST TO HELP TO WORK THROUGH THE CRISIS.
MTA Queensland’s Workplace Relations team is here to help with any workplace matters during this challenging period. Where a business is required to close early, or not open, due to inundation, this may be considered a situation over which an employer has no control.
The Fair Work Act (2009) allows an employer to stand down employees in certain circumstances when the employee cannot be usefully employed because of a stoppage of work for which the employer cannot reasonably be held responsible. For more information on stand downs, please visit the MTA Queensland Member Portal HERE.
An alternative to standing down employees without pay is for the employer to suggest employees request to take accrued annual leave until the premises or area of work affected is able to operate.
If an employer finds themselves in a position where they cannot find suitable alternative duties and so elects to stand down any employees, it is best practice to tell each of the affected employee(s), in writing, the following:
• The start and finish date of the stand down
• Whether the employee will be paid or not paid
• The effect on other employment entitlements
• General inability to attend work due to flooding
If an employee is unable to attend work because of flooding, or other event that impacts the community, then in these circumstances being absent is unpaid leave. Of course, they are able to request to be take annual leave either paid or unpaid depending on whether there is an accrual. In such circumstances there is no automatic entitlement to Personal or Carers’ Leave because the reason for not getting to work does not meet the criteria as stated in the
National Employment Standards.
In other cases, an employee may need to stay home to look after school aged children whose school is damaged due to any number of reasons. Where this is an unexpected emergency, then Carers’ Leave may be appropriate.
For more information, visit the Fair Work website HERE.

Tom Wright clocked up decades of experience with major automotive dealerships but, at the age of 55, and in partnership with wife Cathy, took a punt on starting their own auto business. Together, the couple founded Tugun Cars with just five cars in the yard but an endless supply of enthusiasm and determination. Six years on and the business is flourishing in the Gold Coast suburb nestled on the border with NSW.
WHAT PRODUCTS AND SERVICES DO YOU OFFER AT TUGUN CARS AND WHO ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS?
TW: We offer used cars in the $7000 to $17,000 range. We also work mainly with Japanese and Korean cars – our customers are more interested in those makes.
Smaller cars and SUVs are what we mostly sell. When you review the sales figures every month, 50 per cent of new cars sold are SUVs, so we probably have a 50 per cent split of SUVs and cars here. We’ve found that hatchbacks are much more popular
WE ARE A FAMILY BUSINESS AND THAT'S HOW WE TREAT OUR CUSTOMERS - LIKE EXTENDED FAMILY.
than sedans too, so we try to have more of them available. Also, more people want automatics, so we look for those as well.
Our customers are mainly families looking for a car on a budget and, because we have a high school nearby, we have a steady customer base of young, first-car buyers.
One of our key principles is to prepare the car in such a way that we feel comfortable when someone's son or daughter is taking it away. We sleep well at night knowing that, to the best of our knowledge, we've sold something that we'd be happy to own ourselves.
A GOOD REPUTATION MUST BE VITAL IF YOU ARE SELLING TO FAMILIES AND FIRST-TIME BUYERS?
TW: Yes. People won't go to just anybody when
it's their kids buying their first car. Our cars are prepared by an independent mechanic, and they're fixed as though they were going to my own son or daughter. We are a family business and that's how we treat our customers - like extended family.
WHO IS ON THE TUGUN CARS TEAM?
TW: My wife Cathy and I started the business, and we both work here. I guess you could call me a jack-of-all-trades, but my role is predominantly customer front and it runs through from the purchase side of things to sale and delivery.
Cathy’s role is more administrativeshe handles the registrations, banking and so on.
My son James has been on board for just over a year now after 17 years working out at the mines and he brings a skill set that is complementary to what we do. He assists me in the buying and selling process, the reconditioning of cars and the logistics of that, and we are constantly in contact about what’s next in the process for each car.
My daughter Lucy, who has a background in hospitality, does almost a bit of everything! She isn’t involved in buying yet but is a real team player that can fill in on just about any desk. As a young mum, she works here casually while James is full time, WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE INDUSTRY?
TW: My dad was a sales manager at a Holden dealership in the 1970s but, as I went to boarding school, I was never involved in selling cars then. I actually started in the insurance industry but then a friend opened a Toyota dealership and I could see myself as a car salesman.
I really enjoyed it and when the manager at that dealership went to start his own place, I went with him. Then, in 1988, I moved to the Gold Coast to a gig at Gold Coast Nissan & Honda. I always preferred used cars, and I became Used Car Manager there.
I was subsequently recruited to go the Sunshine Coast as General Manager at Nambour Toyota. We stayed there for a while but did come back to the Gold Coast where I worked as General Sales Manager, then Used Car Manager, then Group Used Car Manager, at a Toyota dealership.
In 2002, I took on a three-year contract -
AS A 55-YEAR-OLD WHO HAD NEVER BEEN MADE REDUNDANT IT WAS A BIT OF A SHOCK, BUT IT GOT ME THINKING ABOUT HAVING MY OWN YARD.
to run Toyota in Fiji. I was offered that role with Toyota Tsusho, which is based out of Tokyo and not part of Toyota Australia.
That was quite an adventure and after the three years we came back, and I worked in a training capacity for Kingsway Training travelling from Cairns to Melbourne doing sales training. That was quite a rewarding role because I was giving people a set of tools to help them do their job better.
After a while, the travel did get the better of me and, one day, while I was training at a dealership in Townsville, I was asked if I’d like to be their General Manager. So I ended up back in a dealership, this time with the Pickering Group in Townsville.
Cathy, who is a nurse by training, worked at the Townsville dealership too, and has also worked at Tweed Mazda in aftermarket sales.
We were in Townsville for seven years before coming back to the Gold Coast where I took a General Manager’s role at VW with the Frizelle Group.
Then I was made redundant.
As a 55-year-old who had never been made redundant it was a bit of a shock, but
it got me thinking about having my own yard. I had often thought about that but was always convinced by others to take the jobs they offered. Then, one day, I saw this vacant block of land here in Tugun.
Cathy and I recognised it as an opportunity and we counted our pennies, signed a lease agreement, and took our savings to buy five cars! That was six years ago, in October 2019, and it was pretty scary when we opened that first day.
It was a leap of faith, but we had confidence in our abilities. That first month we sold seven cars, but we were smart and knew the pitfalls, so left any money in the business to keep growing. Those first five cars turned to 10, 10 turned to 15 and so on.
YOU OPENED AT THE END OF 2019, JUST BEFORE THE COVID PANDEMIC. THAT MUST HAVE BEEN SCARY TOO?
TW: It was! When COVID closures first happened, I remember our plan was that if we could sell one car, we’d take that money to feed ourselves . . . and I just envisaged the business having to wind down. However, car dealers were then deemed an essential service and because people couldn’t go overseas and needed a car, it actually helped us!
Today, we carry around 40 cars, which is all I can fit in the footprint we have.
HOW DO YOU MARKET AND PROMOTE TUGUN CARS?
TW: The repeat and referral business we have now has become key for us. Kids come back to us for their second car, mums and dads refer their kids and their friends to us and so on - it is just amazing how many people say, ‘My friends said to come and see Tom’!
Reviews are very important and we have many good ones. That started organically - we didn’t work on that - and it has become a cornerstone of our business. So much so, in fact, that we have left some online sales platforms because we don’t need them.
DO YOU WORK CLOSELY WITH OTHER LOCAL BUSINESSES?
TW: We do, and that network of businesses is really important. I look at it like we are a big dealership – we have a service department, which are the five local mechanics we work with; we have a parts department, which is either a local wrecking company or new parts businesses if we can’t source second-hand parts; and we have two finance partners too. We offer the full service and are a one-stop shop.
KIDS
COME BACK TO US FOR THEIR SECOND CAR, MUMS AND DADS REFER THEIR KIDS AND THEIR FRIENDS TO US AND SO ON - IT IS JUST AMAZING HOW
MANY PEOPLE SAY, ‘MY FRIENDS SAID TO COME AND SEE TOM’!
ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARE BECOMING MORE POPULAR. DO YOU SEE TUGUN CARS MOVING INTO THAT AREA?
TW: Definitely. It is happening now but, in our price range, it would be an older Prius or something like that. And at the moment we do find that people are a bit scared of a 10-year-old car with 190,000km on it and a battery with who-knows how much life left
in it. We’ve had a couple here and they have not been an easy sell.
I’ve acknowledged to the kids that it is what they will be dealing with in the future, and James and Lucy’s generation are much more open to technology. They’ve grown up with it and they will adapt.
WHAT MOST REWARDING ABOUT BEING PART OF A FAMILY BUSINESS AND DO YOU HAVE IDEAS ON SUCCESSION PLANNING?
TW: I remember when we first started that there was a lot of joking about ‘Oh, how do
you put up with the missus!’ and so on. But we are very lucky. Cathy and I have been married for 42 years, we have worked together before in a couple of places, and we are a partnership - we know what works and what are roles are. We do want a proper succession, so the kids are learning what we do and how it all works, and we trust them completely.
HOW LONG HAS TUGUN CARS BEEN A MEMBER OF MTA QUEENSLAND AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST BENEFIT OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP?
TW: We became members straight away. I had used MTAQ’s services when I was with other organisations and it was a box I needed to tick when starting this business. It meant that I knew I had somewhere to go for advice on, for example, issues from a legal perspective. And I knew also that MTAQ had a code of ethics and I wanted to be a part of that.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG YOU STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?
TW: I think you should never have regrets. I feel like I took opportunities as they came along and while not every one of them worked out like I hoped, they all led me to where I am now. I would say, if an opportunity arises, take it, go for it!

is offering discounted loans for electric vehicles (EVs).
Backed by $150 million from the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), the Commonwealth Bank – through its new EV Access Program – is offering lowinterest EV loans for workers earning less than $100,000 a year, as well as essential workers like police officers, teachers, fire fighters and nurses.
The CEFC finance will go to support discounted loans for new and used EVs worth up to $55,000, as well as home EV charging equipment.
The Government says the interest rates on the loans are up to 5 percentage points lower than standard rates, which it claims could save EV buyers more than $8,000 for a $40,000 loan with a 7-year term.
“Discounted loans help remove barriers to ownership, helping more Australians drive cars that can save them thousands of dollars a year,” said Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen in a statement.
The announcement of the loan program came as Australia’s New Vehicle Efficiency
Standard (NVES) kicked in on 1 January 2025 - a policy aimed at accelerating the adoption of cleaner cars and ensure Australians have access to more sustainable options in the market.
“The Government has listened to industry. The settings to decarbonise transport need to be both carrot and stick—not just all stick through the fuel efficiency standard,” said Matt Hobbs, CEO of the Motor Trades Association of Australia, in a statement. “Ultimately, for the automotive industry to succeed in the transition, consumers need to buy the cars. As we have seen overseas, targeted consumer incentives are crucial to making that happen—they are a key part of the decarbonisation jigsaw puzzle that we are working to solve.”
Federal Government support for programs associated with the uptake of electric vehicles includes, amongst others, FBT exemptions, support for EV charging infrastructure at dealerships and repairers through the Driving the Nation Fund and, through the New Energy Apprenticeship Program, support for apprentices working in the clean energy sector, including those working on EVs.
THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT has introduced the DRIVEN Charger Rebate Stream that is aimed at supporting the automotive sector as it transitions to selling and repairing more electric vehicles (EVs).
The program gives dealerships and EV repairers a rebate to assist in the funding of purchasing and installing eligible smart EV chargers on their sites including in remote and regional areas.
The rebate is up to $2,500 per eligible smart EV charger that has been purchased and installed. Multiple EV chargers can be installed with the maximum rebate for multiple chargers per eligible site reaching $20,000.
The DRIVEN program will run over 4 years from 2024-25 to 2027-28.
Eligibility requirements include being a licenced motor dealer/ trader; a service centre associated with a licenced motor dealer/trader; or an automotive repair business, compliant with Australian Standards on EV maintenance and repair and which has at least one current member of staff suitably qualified to undertake work on EVs.
FARMERS, AGRIBUSINESSES, AND equipment purchasers can now access discounted loans to fund emissionsreducing initiatives, thanks to a $300 million investment from the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), backed by the Australian Government.
The initiative offers interest rate discounts of up to 1.15 per cent through NAB’s new green asset finance program in collaboration with CEFC. The funding aims to support the purchase of electric, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen-powered vehicles, as well as utes, trucks, and heavy equipment. Additionally, the Emissions Reduction Incentive provides lower-cost financing for farmers implementing sustainable practices to cut emissions.
“AUSTRALIAN AGRICULTURE HAS A REPUTATION INTERNATIONALLY FOR HIGH STANDARDS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY.”
Farmers can access loans ranging from $1 million to $5 million, with potential borrowing cost savings exceeding $57,000 annually. The Government suggests these savings can be reinvested in sustainable on-farm practices, including switching to enhanced fertilisers that lower nitrous oxide emissions, adopting methane inhibitors, or implementing land-use changes to increase yield, capture carbon, and reduce emissions.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy,
Chris Bowen, emphasised the growing global demand for cleaner products and practices.
“Reducing emissions and making a profit are not mutually exclusive. Increasingly, we’re seeing international supply chains demanding cleaner, greener products and practices, with buyers either paying a premium for green goods, or penalising higher emissions products.
“We want Australian farmers, business and manufacturers to be as competitive as possible in global markets and be supported to get there as cheaply and efficiently as possible.”
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Julie Collins, highlighted Australia’s strong reputation for environmental sustainability in agriculture.
“Australian agriculture has a reputation internationally for high standards of environmental sustainability,” said the Minister.
"It’s a track record we can be proud of, but we can’t rest on our laurels. Working together will help everyone continue to do better.
“There is no one way to reduce emissions on a farm, but these loans mean our farmers can access the capital they need to make changes that are good for their businesses.”
THE FINANCIAL TRANSACTION Reports Act 1988 (FTR Act) was repealed as of 7 January 2025. As of this date, motor vehicle dealers are no longer regulated under the FTR Act and do not need to report:
• Significant cash transactions of $10,000 or more (or the foreign currency equivalent)
• Suspicious transactions
However, transactions that occurred before 7 January 2025 must still be reported to AUSTRAC within the required timeframe.
Please note that this repeal does not affect other legal obligations, including those under the AML/CTF Act, which remain in place.
MTA QUEENSLAND IS establishing EV Ready - a program designed to set a minimum standard for automotive businesses that service and repair electric vehicles.
Participating businesses will be recognised by Queensland Government Electrical Safety Regulators and the community as appropriately qualified and equipped to work on electric vehicles.
To ensure we’re meeting the needs of the industry, MTA Queensland has created a consultation form to gather feedback from Queensland automotive businesses directly affected by this initiative.
We encourage all members to complete the survey and share their insights.

AS PART OF MTA
Queensland’s mission to support members, the Association has developed new signage that members can use to promote their businesses.
The new signage represents an opportunity to enhance credibility, attract new customers and foster trust through clear association of a business with MTA Queensland and its requirements that members uphold professional standards and values.
YOUR COMMITMENT TO THE INDUSTRY AND THE MTA COMMUNITY.
Displaying the signage prominently provides an unmistakable endorsement of a business's quality, shows the public that the business is part of a trusted network, and differentiates it from non-member competitors.
Some members have already received their new signage and are proudly displaying it at their businesses. For those who have yet to receive it signage, you can expect it to arrive later this month or early in 2025.
We encourage all members to display these signs proudly, reinforcing your commitment to the industry and the MTA community.

ROD CAMM, THE CEO of MTA Queensland, recently sat down for an interview with The Motoring Chronicles YouTube channel, offering valuable insights into the current state of the automotive industry in Queensland. Covering a broad range of topics, the discussion delved into the pressing issues facing the sector, including the transition to electric vehicles (EVs), infrastructure readiness, workforce and skills shortages, interacting with governments, and more.
One of the key themes of the interview was the impact of EV adoption. Mr Camm highlighted the need for industry to understand the shift that is happening and to prepare for a future in which electrification will be the norm. He also highlighted that while government support has been encouraging, more strategic planning is required to ensure a seamless transition to new mobility technologies.
Big news items that happened throughout 2024 - including decisions around the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, immigration rules, and the Franchising Code of Conduct – as well as workforce and skills shortages were also discussed, with Mr Camm emphasising the importance of strengthening career pathways and incentives to attract new talent into automotive trades, thereby ensuring that

businesses have access to skilled workers as the industry evolves.
Also discussed were vehicle sales trends – including the bumper, record-breaking numbers from 2024 – and what the next 12 months may look like.
MTA QUEENSLAND HAS raised significant concerns about the Federal Government’s newly announced $10,000 residential construction apprenticeship bonus scheme, warning that it risks creating an uneven playing field among Australia’s critical trade industries.
“While we fully support initiatives to bolster apprenticeships, which are vital to building Australia’s future workforce, we need a comprehensive approach that strengthens the entire skills base,” said Rod Camm, CEO of MTA Queensland.
“WE NEED AN APPROACH THAT RECOGNISES THE ESSENTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF ALL TRADE INDUSTRIES TO AUSTRALIA’S ECONOMIC INFRASTRUCTURE”
“Just as essential as installing a new sink or building a house, getting your car repaired is a vital service. By offering financial incentives solely to the construction sector, the government risks unintentionally diverting apprentices away from the automotive industry, making their decision based on financial gain rather than genuine interest or the needs of the industry,” Mr Camm explained.
MTA Queensland is calling for an evidencebased approach that targets industries with the greatest need for skilled workers, rather than offering selective incentives.
“Recent data shows concerning trends in automotive apprenticeship enrolments, with some states reporting – Light Vehicle
mechanics down 22 per cent, Heavy Commercial Vehicle 34 per cent, and Automotive Electrical Technology down 35 per cent compared to this time last year. All these trades are in short supply.”
The automotive sector is at a pivotal moment, undergoing rapid technological evolution with the increasing adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles. This transformation demands a growing workforce of skilled technicians to meet future challenges.
“At a time when the automotive industry is striving to attract more apprentices to address these emerging needs, policies like this actively undermine that goal,” said Mr Camm.
“We need an approach that recognises the essential contributions of all trade industries to Australia’s economic infrastructure. Every trade plays a crucial role, and their development must be supported equally.”
MTA Queensland is urging the Federal Government to reconsider its current policy and implement apprenticeship incentives that are inclusive and balanced across all essential trades, ensuring Australia can sustainably build the skilled workforce it needs for the future.

With state-of-the-art speedway, drag racing and burnout facilities, premium spectator accommodations, and professionally serviced pit areas, the Perth Motorplex is one of the best motorsport precincts in Australia. This year, the venue celebrates its 25th birthday and Motor Trader travelled to WA to attend Motorvation 39 - one of the biggest events held at the Motorplex - to learn more about the world-class facility and meet the team behind the scenes.
WITH ALMOST 20,000 spectators and close to 600 entrants taking part over the three days of the event, Motorvation is the largest horsepower party on the West Coast.
Hosted by the Perth Motorplex in association with SummerNats, Motorvation brings passionate car enthusiasts together from all levels of the automotive industry,
with spectators and entrants travelling from across the country to enjoy competitions in the Elite Hall, the Drag Racing, the Pro Burnout Series, and driving events such as the Go to Whoa and Slalom events.
If not competing, entrants can push their cars to the limit just for fun on Skid Row, the Smooth Cruise, the Super Cruise, and Roll Racing.
WITH ALMOST 20,000 SPECTATORS AND CLOSE TO 600 ENTRANTS TAKING PART OVER THE THREE DAYS OF THE EVENT, MOTORVATION IS THE LARGEST HORSEPOWER PARTY ON THE WEST COAST.
SummerNats official and Head Judge in the Motorvation Elite Hall, Rachel Durbidge, is very proud of the event and of the abilities and expertise upon which Motorvation and other SummerNats events are able to put a spotlight.
“Every year, the Elite Hall show pavilion has everything from owner-builds created in a home garage to complete professional shop builds,” said Rachel.
“The innovative skills throughout Western Australia have always been impressive. The automotive industry here and across Australia is strong and we look forward to showcasing some of the West’s best at MotorEx in Melbourne in May.”
Along with featuring extraordinary cars, Motorvation also shines a light on industry more generally with areas such as Trader Alley packed with industry stalls promoting
careers and training and business opportunities in the automotive sector.
The Motor Traders Association of Western Australia (MTAWA) had a large display here, with plenty of options on offer for those interested in automotive.
“We want to engage with our community of car people,” said Brad Gamel, Lead
Auto Electrical Trainer and Assessor.
“We are happy to talk about training, apprenticeships, career paths, or our more fun things like our MTA-sponsored V8 Drive Day car. Regardless of if they are just starting out in the industry, looking to upskill, have a young person they want to support, or just want to have some fun in a car, MTA WA Training can help them.”
The MTAWA stand was very hands-on and interactive. A Ford Barra engine and transmission were front and centre and it proved to be a major talking point for many who visited the stand as the Barra is a popular swap in the car community.
ACCESS TO MOTORSPORT IN PERTH ALLOWS THOSE OF US WITH A TRADE IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES, TAKING THESE MACHINES TO THEIR LIMITS.
Part of the display included a Hyundai i20 that had been cut in half so that all of the internals were on show for visitors to poke and prod, and there were also plenty of components available - such as turbos, rotors, and superchargers – to allow MTAWA staff to demonstrate their expertise.
One of the smiling faces at the MTAWA stand was Trainer and Assessor Bridget Bell.
A trade-qualified light vehicle automotive and mobile plant mechanic, Bridget is no stranger to the Perth Motorplex, providing communications and marketing support to drag racing teams and official televised commentary on race day.
As a part of the Perth Motorplex commentary team, Bridget knows almost every stakeholder at the track and understands the importance of the facility to the broader automotive industry.
“Access to motorsport in Perth allows those of us with a trade in the automotive industry to push the boundaries, taking these machines to their limits,” she said. “Lessons learned on the track can be taken back to the workshops to improve the
“EVENTS LIKE MOTORVATION are integral to the automotive aftermarket and performance workshop industries. Car shows give people a reason to build, invest, compete, show their cars, and show off what they can do.
“At some point, everyone who modifies their car wants a reason to do that work. Show like Summernats, Motorvation, Motorex, Rockynats, the National Drag Racing Championship, the Pro Burnout Series, or any of the other hundreds of different car events around Australia, are the reason people do it.

overall skill in industry, especially with regards to working safely under pressure, performance, and handling characteristics of the vehicles.
“A facility such as the Perth Motorplex allows our risk-takers and those experimenting with the limits of performance to test their theories in a safe and controlled environment. You can’t put a price on the value of this facility to our industry.”
Many can’t, but Perth Motorplex General Manager Gavin Migro can. 25 years ago, that price was $22million of taxpayer funding.
“Back then we had a speedway track in Claremont at the Showgrounds and a drag racing strip out at Ravenswood,” said Gavin. “Our Premier at the time was Richard Court. He was a fan of speedway and my
dad, Con, would send him complimentary season tickets every year. Whenever he could, Richard would join us trackside.
“When the showgrounds evicted the speedway club, we reached out to Richard and the drag racers and came up with a plan for a new venue that would provide state-ofthe-art facilities for multiple motorsports.”
25 years later and the Perth Motorplex grows stronger every year. With a dozen full-time staff and hundreds of volunteers and event-specific rostered staff, the team is happy and smiling every time you see them.
The pride that Gavin has in the facility and his team is undeniable.
“We want people to have a great time at our facility,” he said. “From the person who greets you at the gate to the official on the

start line through to the staffer selling you a refreshing beverage, everyone is having a great time and making sure our spectators and entrants do too.”
Gavin Migro, Perth Motorplex General Manager
That great time is showing up in the bank account. Local industry sponsors the track to the tune of almost $1million; more than 250,000 spectators get their backside trackside each season; an average of 150 entrants every week make the journey from up to 500km away; the books turnover $10million each year; and there has recently been an election promise to upgrade the track with another $11 million.
Those numbers are inspiration to many other venues in Australia and they want to know how Gavin is doing it.
“We don’t just talk the talk; we walk the walk,” he said. “We are all racers, and we all work in the automotive industry as trade-qualified professionals or business people. By listening to our community and serving their needs we are winning on a world-class stage.”
HONDA PRESENTED THE first two models in the company’s 0 Series line of battery electric vehicles at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) – the Honda 0 SUV and Honda 0 Saloon prototypes. The company says that production models based on both prototypes will launch in North America in 2026. Global markets, Australia amongst them presumably, are to follow.
A concept version of the Honda 0 Saloon made a bow last year at CES 2024 and, at the time, Honda unveiled another concept – the people mover-like ‘Space Hub’ – but that appears to have been replaced by the interesting SUV in the prototype line-up.
To be built (at least initially) at the Honda EV Hub in Ohio in the U.S., the 0 Series vehicles will be fully stocked with tech features and will be equipped with ASIMO OS, an original vehicle operating system developed in-house by

Honda. Honda says ASIMO OS will apply integrated management of electronic control units (ECUs) for vehicle systems such as automated driving/advanced driver assistance systems (AD/ADAS) and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system. The company says that there’ll be Level 3 automated driving technology available. With Level 3 automated driving, the vehicle
will, Honda says, oversee driving while the human driver can perform some other task.
Further technical details are to come, but there are reports that suggest singleand dual-motor models will be available
with battery pack size offering a range around 480km.
A production model of the Honda 0 Saloon is scheduled to be introduced first in late 2026 in North America.
AT CES 2025, Toyota announced the completion of Phase 1 construction at Toyota Woven City, its advanced location to test mobility innovation. The official launch of Phase 1 is expected later this year.
Toyota introduced the Woven City concept at CES 2020 - a couple of years after announcing it would seek to become a mobility company – with the location designed to drive Toyota’s long-term vision for future mobility.
Woven City – which is being developed in collaboration with Woven by Toyota, a mobile technology subsidiary of Toyota – is envisioned as a hub where ‘Inventors’ – Toyota, Toyota Group companies, external firms, startups, and entrepreneurs – can develop and validate new mobility technologies. It is aimed at providing an environment equipped with advanced tools and services to address societal challenges.
Alongside launch preparations, work is ongoing to develop a manufacturing
hub and groundwork for Phase 2 has commenced.
A number of businesses are already confirmed to be included at Woven City and additional startups, universities, and research institutions will be invited through an accelerator program launching in summer 2025.
Toyota says that residents in Woven City, will play a key role in co-creation activities. The initial wave of residentsabout 100 Toyota and Woven by Toyota staff and their families - are set to join late in 2025, with the community gradually expanding to accommodate around 360 people in Phase 1. Eventually, the city is projected to host approximately 2,000
residents across multiple phases.
BOSCH EBIKE SYSTEMS introduced a new level of digital security for eBikes at January’s CES show with the launch of Battery Lock, a function that the company says renders stolen eBike batteries useless.
Traditional removable batteries are mechanically secured with a lock. Battery Lock enhances this security digitally. When activated via the eBike Flow app, the battery locks automatically when the eBike is switched off. If a locked battery is installed in another eBike with Bosch’s smart system, motor support is disabled, making the eBike unusable and eliminating resale value for thieves.
Woven City will, Toyota says, serve as a testing ground for its transformation into a mobility company. The company says that it will expand beyond transportation to encompass the movement of people, goods, information, and energy.
Phase 1 spans approximately 50,000 square metres, with plans to expand to 708,000 square metres in the future.
Bosch says the system allows multiple digital keys, including smartphones with the eBike Flow app and Bosch’s Kiox 300 and Kiox 500 displays. Users can manage digital keys flexibly and deactivate Battery Lock when sharing a battery with family or friends.
THE AUSTRALASIAN NEW Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) revealed in January the top overall safety performers for 2024. The Toyota Camry, the Mazda CX-80 and Zeekr X emerged as the highest overall safety performers according to ANCAP.
Each of these models achieved a five-star ANCAP safety rating under the 2023-2025 test and rating protocols. Rankings were determined using an overall weighting calculation, with 40 per cent of the score based on Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 20 per cent each for Child Occupant Protection, Vulnerable Road User Protection, and Safety Assist.
The Toyota Camry (Medium Car, hybrid) secured the highest overall weighted ranking of all vehicle models, earning a score of 88.4 per cent.
Following in second place was the Mazda CX-80 (Large SUV, petrol/diesel/PHEV) with an overall weighted score of 87.6 per cent.
Rounding out the Top 3, and only marginally behind the CX-80, was all-new brand entrant Zeekr, achieving an overall weighted score of 87.4 per cent for its first arrival, the Zeekr X (Small SUV, electric).
“We saw a handful of new manufacturers enter the mix locally in 2024, and each of these – including Zeekr – have shown their commitment to bringing five-star cars to Australian and New Zealand consumers,”
THE TOYOTA CAMRY (MEDIUM CAR, HYBRID) SECURED THE HIGHEST OVERALL WEIGHTED RANKING OF ALL VEHICLE MODELS, EARNING A SCORE OF 88.4 PER CENT.
said Carla Hoorweg, ANCAP Chief Executive Officer.
Of the 23 vehicles rated by ANCAP in 2024, close to half (11 of 23) were new models not previously known to the Australian and New Zealand markets.
BMW HAS INTRODUCED its Panoramic iDrive system at CES 2025. The system, powered by BMW Operating System X, will debut in BMW’s Neue Klasse models from late 2025. The new iDrive system balances analogue and digital controls, utilizing physical buttons for core functions like wipers and indicators while integrating touch and voice control for media, navigation, and driver assistance settings. The system integrates four key elements designed for driver-focused interaction:
• BMW Panoramic Vision: A newly developed Head-Up Display that extends from A-pillar to A-pillar, providing critical driving information within the driver’s direct line of sight.
• BMW 3D Head-Up Display: An optional feature that integrates navigation and automated driving details, presenting them alongside Panoramic Vision projections. BMW says several patents underpin this advanced projection technology.
• Central Display: A matrix backlit touchscreen with an updated QuickSelect menu, enabling intuitive operation.
Content can be seamlessly transferred to Panoramic Vision via swipe gestures, allowing for personalisation and efficient multitasking.
• Multifunction Steering Wheel: BMW’s “shy-tech” approach ensures illuminated buttons provide easy access to critical functions, maintaining the “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” principle. The haptic buttons are designed to enhance ease of use without distraction.
“...WE ARE GIVING ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST AND MOST COMPREHENSIVE INFOTAINMENT SYSTEMS EVEN GREATER CAPABILITY AND ONCE AGAIN SETTING THE INDUSTRY BENCHMARK IN MULTIMODAL INTERACTION.”
BMW’s Operating System X, developed inhouse, underpins the system. The company says that it offers seamless updates, greater personalisation, and enhanced AI capabilities, including a more responsive BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.
“With this advance, we are giving one of the world’s best and most comprehensive infotainment systems even greater capability and once again setting the industry benchmark in multimodal interaction,” said Frank Weber, BMW AG’s Board Member for Development. “Starting with the first series-produced Neue Klasse model at the end of this year, the new BMW Panoramic iDrive will form an integral part of all future BMW models.”

Underpinning all this techie goodness are dual 180kW electric motors. A 91kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides an estimated range of approximately 482kms on a full charge. The vehicle supports DC fast charging up to 150kW.
The Afeela 1 is to be available in two trims, Origin and Signature, with the Origin starting at $US89,900 ($AU142,700) and the Signature at $US102,900
($AU163,372). Delivers for the Signature are expected to begin in 2026 with the Origin to follow in 2027. Both trims are to be initially available to buyers with a three-year complimentary subscription to features such as Afeela Intelligent Drive, Afeela Personal Agent, and selected entertainment content, and the company says it is now taking reservations for California residents.
IN A SIGNIFICANT development within the automotive industry, it was revealed in December that Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan had entered into discussions to merge their operations, aiming to establish the world's third-largest car manufacturer by sales. Mitsubishi Motors, in which Nissan holds a 24 per cent stake, was reported to be considering joining the merger plan.
Talk of such a tie-up likely stemmed from several factors, not least of which is a global automotive landscape undergoing a rapid transformation with a pronounced shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) and advanced autonomous driving technologies. For every traditional automaker, the rise of formidable Chinese competitors such as BYD, particularly in the EV sector, is a significant challenge.
The sight of two - potentially three - of the great names of the Japanese
automotive industry joining forces was c;learly momentous news. The potential merger was seen as a way that the companies could pool resources, cut costs, and accelerate the development of next-generation vehicles. If successful, the new entity would have rivaled Toyota and Volkswagen in terms of global scale, giving Japan another automotive powerhouse capable of competing with emerging industry giants.
However, just a few weeks after the announcement of the potential merger, the wheels look to have fallen off. One sticking point appears to be over control. According to reporting from Reuters, Honda suggested that Nissan become a subsidiary - a suggestion met with resistance from Nissan who subsequently stepped back from talks.
With the Honda merger apparently on the rocks, it is being reported that Nissan
FOR EVERY TRADITIONAL AUTOMAKER, THE RISE OF FORMIDABLE CHINESE COMPETITORS SUCH AS BYD, PARTICULARLY IN THE EV SECTOR, IS A SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGE.
has begun looking at other strategic partnerships, including with nontraditional players. Reports suggest some sort of strategic tie-up rather than merger could be possible with Taiwanese tech behemoth Foxconn. Such a partnership could open up a new path for Nissan - one that would allow it to secure technological advancements without having to merge.
Nissan may need to do something. The company is reportedly in some trouble. At the end of 2024 it announced it was facing a 'severe situation', was to take 'urgent measures to turnaround its performance . . . ' and that it would cut global production capacity by 20 per cent and reduce its global workforce by 9000.
At the time of writing, the fate of the Honda-Nissan-Mitsubishi merger remains uncertain, but the likelihood of it proceeding as originally envisioned appears slim. With alternative options being explored, the most probable outcome seems to be a continued separation of these companies, each pursuing its own strategy for the future of mobility.
For Honda, this may mean working on its EV development efforts and seeking other collaborations. For Mitsubishi, it remains tied to the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance but could seek additional partnerships. Nissan, meanwhile, may find its future intertwined with tech-driven companies like Foxconn, signaling a new era where traditional automakers align with electronics and software giants rather than merging with their historic rivals.
Regardless of how this plays out, one thing is clear, the global automotive industry is at a crossroads, and Japanese automakers - actually, all automakersmust move quickly and strategically to remain relevant in an increasingly digital and electrified world.

of new Mazda6 models remains available across all grades at Mazda dealerships nationwide currently with the range starting with the G25 Sport model at $37,990 driveaway and rising to a 20th Anniversary model at $55,649.
While the venerable Mazda6 may be on its way out, in Europe at least, it will survive in all-electric form.
Revealed in January at the Brussels
Motor Show, the battery-electric Mazda6e – a model known as the EZ-6 in China where it was developed with Mazda’s Chinese partner Changan - is a sleek piece of work, designed with a fastback saloon profile, and will first launch in left-hand drive European markets later this year. It is expected to be available in the right-hand drive UK market in the first half of 2026, giving some hope that it may make it to Australia at some point.
The Mazda6e offers two powertrain options:
• a 68.8kWh battery set-up provides up to 483km of range, 200kW DC fast charging, and can, Mazda says, charge from 10 to
80 per cent in 22 minutes. It produces 190kW and can sprint to 100km/h in 7.6 seconds.
• 80kWh battery set-up extends range to 555km, and this model produces 180kW reaches 100km/h in 7.8 seconds. DC rapid charging means a 10 to 80 percent charge in 45 minutes.
Both versions deliver 320Nm of torque with a rear-wheel-drive layout.
Key design features include frameless doors and integrated door handles; signature lighting, including a dynamic illuminated wing grille that pulses when charging; aerodynamic 19-inch alloy wheels; electronically extendable rear spoiler; distinctive Mazda lettering replacing the traditional badge at the rear.
The Mazda6e’s interior features a panoramic roof, a floating centre console and minimalist dashboard. The cabin is available in two trim levels - Takumi: Beige or black artificial leather, or Takumi Plus: Premium tan Nappa leather.
Tech features include a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.2inch digital instrument cluster, augmented reality head-up display, and a 330-litre rear boot and 70-litre front boot.
GWM HAS CONFIRMED Australian specifications and pricing for the 2025 GWM Cannon ute, which now boasts increased performance capabilities with the introduction of a 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine - borrowed from its larger sibling, the Cannon Alpha - and 3,500kg towing capacity.
GWM says the latest iteration of the Cannon delivers significant upgrades in refinement and technology as well as
engine capacity and towing strength, and the ute is exclusively available in a 4x4 Dual Cab Pickup configuration and in four trim levels—LUX, ULTRA, VANTA, and XSR.
The 2.4-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine produces 135kW and 480Nm of torque. It features an advanced Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) that GWM says reduces turbo lag while maintaining fuel efficiency at higher speeds.
The engine is paired with GWM’s inhouse 9-speed automatic transmission.

SUBARU HAS UNVEILED the new Forester Hybrid in the U.S., marking something of a milestone in the brand's journey toward electrification. The new model - with its 'strong hybrid' powertrain - integrates Subaru's series-parallel hybrid system with its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, aiming to enhance both fuel efficiency and driving performance and Subaru Australia has stated that the model will make its way to the local market mid-year.
Power comes via a newly developed 2.5-liter Boxer engine paired with electric motors and high-capacity lithiumion battery. This combination delivers a total system output of 147kW.
The next-generation Forester comes standard with Subaru’s
EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, a tabletstyle Subaru 11.6-inch Multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster on selected variants.
Along with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, there’s X-Mode Dual Mode with Hill Descent Control, Active Torque Vectoring and Vehicle Dynamics Control.
Pricing and specs for versions of the Forester Hybrid slated for Australia will be announced closer to launch.
AUSTRALIA has introduced a new variant of its flagship dual-cab utility, the Triton GSR Special Edition, offering customers a more rugged and distinctive styling option.
Designed to enhance the GSR’s appeal, the Special Edition features a Graphite Grey grille with embossed Mitsubishi lettering, a black sports bar replacing the standard sailplane, and body-coloured wheel arches. The removal of the GSR’s standard fender flares allows for greater customisation with Mitsubishi Genuine Accessories.
Beyond its visual enhancements, the Triton GSR Special Edition benefits from a new Adaptive Cruise Control system, which now includes a full-stop function. This update, rolling out across all automatic transmission Triton models from November 2024 production, ensures improved
convenience and safety, as the system remains engaged even at a complete stop, unlike the previous version, which disengaged at 25 km/h.
Power comes from a 2.4-litre bi-turbo delivering 150kW and 470Nm. It is paried with a six-speed auto trnasmission. Braked towing capacity is 3500kg.
The Triton GSR Special Edition is available in Black Mica or Graphite Grey as standard, with Yamabuki Orange and White Diamond offered for an additional $200.
Pricing for the Triton GSR Special Edition starts at $63,140 (RRP), slightly undercutting the ongoing Triton GSR model, which remains at $63,840 (RRP).
ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV)
adoption in Australia remains sluggish, with consumer sentiment unchanged since early 2024, according to the latest EV & Hybrid Vehicle Wave 3 Insights Report by the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA).
The study, based on feedback from 2,000 Australian drivers, found that 39 per cent of respondents would consider an EV for their next vehicle - a figure that has remained largely static over the past two years. AADA CEO James Voortman attributed this stagnation to affordability concerns and broader economic pressures.
"Affordability remains the biggest barrier to EV adoption, with 55 per cent of respondents stating that EVs are simply too expensive, however, this has improved from 62 per cent in the first survey in September 2022, " he said.
"Economic pressures are clearly influencing buyer behaviour, with 64 per cent of respondents saying they are less willing to pay a premium for an EV due to current cost-of-living challenges. The average price premium consumers are willing to pay for an EV has dropped to just 6 per cent, down from 8 per cent in January 2024."
The report highlights that traditional hybrid vehicles remain the preferred electrified option, with 52 per cent of respondents considering them, compared
to 39 per cent for EVs and 36 per cent for plug-in hybrids.
Other key findings include:
• The belief that EVs are better for the environment has dropped from 67 per cent to 58 per cent since early 2024.
• Concerns over EV resale value and repair costs are rising.
• Interest in medium SUVs continues to grow, with 32 per cent considering this body type.
• Higher-income households are nearly twice as likely to consider an EV as lower-income households.
• Support for EV incentives has declined from 69 per cent to 62 per cent over the past 10 months, while support for a fuel efficiency standard remains strong at 78 per cent.
"These findings underscore the importance of ensuring that policies aimed at boosting EV uptake consider affordability and infrastructure accessibility. With the recently introduced New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) now in effect, it is crucial that the framework supports consumer choice without compromising vehicle affordability," said Mr Voortman.
"If EV adoption is to accelerate, industry and government must work together to address cost concerns and improve the value proposition for consumers."

NEW VEHICLE SALES for 2025 have got off to a sluggish start with the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) reporting that VFACTS data showed 86,804 sales for January, down 3.3 per cent on the result for the same period last year.
Sales in January 2025 for Queensland fell by 4.4 per cent on January 2024 to 18,913. The ACT was down 11.9 per cent on January 2024 to 1,137; NSW was down 4 per cent to 25,717; the Northern Territory increased by 3.4 per cent to 767; South Australia decreased by 3.5 per cent to 5,791; Tasmania decreased by 3.9 per cent to 1,435; Victoria decreased 4.1 per cent to 22,786 and Western Australia saw an increase of 3.5 per cent to 10,258.
Sales of hybrids and plug-in hybrids were strong with the FCAI reporting they now made up 17.1 per cent and 2.2 per cent of the market respectively. Growth for hybrids stood at 51.5 per cent over January
2024 (from 9,791 to 14,836), and 88.5 per cent for PHEVs over the same month last year (from 1,012 to 1,908).
Battery-electric vehicles appeared to fare less well.
“ . . . sales of battery electric vehicles were remarkably low and based on data from all sources, EVs accounted for just 4.4 per cent of sales, the lowest since October 2022,” said Tony Weber, CEO of the FCAI. “This is a major concern because consumers are turning away from EVs at the time the Commonwealth Government has introduced the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES).
“The industry continues to increase the range of zero and low-emission vehicles providing consumers with an increased choice of models and varying price points. However, the Government needs to reconsider the steps it can take to build consumer confidence in EVs, otherwise their ambitious NVES targets will not be met.”
(8,322), FORD (6,830), KIA (5,720) AND MITSUBISHI (5,681).
Toyota was the market leader with sales of 18,424 during January, followed by Mazda (8,322), Ford (6,830), Kia (5,720) and Mitsubishi (5,681). The Toyota RAV4 was Australia’s top selling vehicle with sales of 5,076 followed by the Ford Ranger (4,254), Toyota HiLux (3,302), Toyota Prado (2,847) and the Mitsubishi Outlander (2,090).
Looking back on 2024, the numbers look good at first glance. It was a recordbreaking year, with new vehicle sales reaching an all-time high. However, a noticeable slowdown toward the end of the year caused many to ponder what 2025 may have in store - a wary view seemingly proven by January’s numbers.
According to the December 2024
VFACTS report, 95,895 new vehicles were sold in the final month of 2024, reflecting a 2.7 per cent decline from December 2023. Despite this drop, total annual sales hit 1,220,607 units, a marginal increase of 0.3 per cent from the previous year and enough to set a new record for Australian vehicle sales.
“The second half of the year showed a concerning trend with sales in the private segment falling to very low levels as interest rates and general cost of living pressures impacted Australian families,” said Tony Weber.
Toyota was Australia’s leading car brand in 2024, selling 241,296 units and securing a 19.8 per cent market share. Ford (100,170 sales, 8.2 per cent market share) took second spot with Mazda (95,987 sales, 7.9 per cent), Kia (81,787 sales, 6.7 per cent), and Mitsubishi (74,587 sales, 6.1 per cent) rounding out the top five.
With strong demand for SUVs and light commercial vehicles - categories that continue to dominate sales – Mr Weber warned of challenges in meeting Australia’s newly implemented New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), which kicked off at the beginning of the year.
“While overall consumer preferences remain clear with SUVs and Light Commercial vehicles continuing to dominate the market and especially the top ten sales, many vehicles in these segments are either difficult or expensive to decarbonise. This will prove to be a significant challenge in meeting the extremely ambitious targets of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) which began on 1 January 2025,” he said.
Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales were reported as being lower than expected, but hybrid and plug-in hybrid models saw increased interest.
According to the Electric Vehicle Council – which released its annual State of EVs report in December - about 114,000 new battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) were sold in Australia in 2024, up on the previous record of more than 98,000 sales in 2023.
94,224 motorcycles and OHVs (Off Highway Vehicles) were delivered to Australian customers in 2024, a decrease of
ACCORDING TO FIGURES FROM THE FCAI, OFF-ROAD MOTORCYCLES RECORDED 41,178 UNITS, EXPERIENCING A 2.6 PER CENT INCREASE...
1.8 per cent on the 2023 result. According to figures from the FCAI, off-road motorcycles recorded 41,178 units, experiencing a 2.6 per cent increase, and road motorcycles recorded a 2.4 per cent fall to 34,266. Scooters declined 22.5 per cent to 4,752.
In the OHV segment, 14,028 units were sold, a decrease of 3.8 per cent compared with 2023.
Once again, it was economic pressures that played a big part in the result.
“With motorcycles often considered as a discretionary purchase for many people, cost of living pressures and interest rates were matters that influenced the decision to purchase a new bike for commuting, recreation or off-road purposes,” said Mr Weber.

low continues to bring torrential downpours to north Queensland, employers are hastily making accommodations for employees to work or decisions to shut down businesses during the event.
It is not only important that employers follow the right procedures in relation to a stand down, but the procedures are also crucial in maintaining the safety and wellbeing of their employees.
In accordance with the Fair Work Act 2020, an employer can send employees home if there is no useful work for them to do because of equipment break downs, natural disasters (including floods, bushfires, tropical cyclones), enforceable government direction or industrial action. This is known as a “Stand Down”.
A stand down is distinguishable from a “Close Down” which is when a business closes during a holiday or festive season. We discussed Close Downs in our previous article which can be accessed in HERE.
To ensure that a stand down provision applies, employers should check the employee’s applicable award or employment contract.
Employers are unable to stand down an employee for the mere fact that the business is quiet or there is insufficient work.
For more information about the steps you need to check,
MTA Queensland members can access information HERE.
If there are no options for taking leave with pay, the employee can still be stood down without pay during the period. However, the employee still accrues leave based on normal hours as if they had been working (i.e. sick leave and carer’s leave). Any time away from work due to a stand down still counts towards an employee’s service.
If it is a stand down situation due to circumstances outside the control of the employer, it will be unpaid time.
If an employer is directing an employee to take annual leave during the stand down, they must ensure that they are adhering to the relevant award or agreement.

HELLO AND A belated welcome to 2025! At the end of last year, I wrote about our ongoing commitment to our trainers’ professional development (PD) and December saw them participate in several internal and external PD activities including OEM level training from Volvo, Isuzu, Foton, AusEV, 3M, Axalta and Hitachi. I’m pleased to know that this knowledge will now flow through all parts of Queensland’s automotive industry and, importantly, into your workshops.

schools, one being Caboolture State High and the other, WesTEC Trade Training Centre. These Hub schools have formal arrangements with other schools in their areas and provide students with vocational education pathways. This effectively gives us access to another halfa-dozen schools around both the Caboolture and Springfield regions.
I also touched on a number of exciting prospects for us in 2025 - with one of them being the growth in our school engagement - which I can now elaborate on.
It is well documented that the automotive industry is experiencing both skill and workforce shortages. One of our key objectives is to provide a pipeline of new talent to meet industry’s current and future workforce needs. For a number of years, and on a relatively small scale, we’ve successfully delivered school programs under the VETiS provision. VETiS is a program that allows school students to complete a recognised qualification that aligns with their career aspirations whilst still completing school.
2025 sees us expand our reach by partnering with a couple of new ‘Hub’
Our school programs run over 20-22 weeks, and we predominantly deliver a Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation aimed at students wanting to get into the mechanical side of the industry.
‘Breaking News’ is that for the first time we’re offering a Certificate II in the Paint/ Panel (collision) area at WesTEC. This course is designed to provide students with introductory or pre-employment level skills and knowledge in both the refinishing and body repair areas of the collision sector. Students completing either the mechanical or collision VETiS courses will be well placed to commence an apprenticeship in their chosen fields.
Please feel free to reach out if you’re interested in speaking to these students about potential career opportunities within your business.

AUTOMOTIVE REFINISHING TECHNOLOGY
SHANÉ MEYER is the MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month for December 2024.
The 21-year-old is in the third year of her automotive refinishing technology (spray painting) apprenticeship and works at McClure Refinishing in Townsville. She is, according to her employer, an outstanding student and someone who, ‘. . . is an extremely passionate and driven apprentice who displays all of the qualities an employer could ask from someone in the team.’
a truck shop. Working on trucks enabled her to develop some broad painting skills and confirm that this was career in which she really wanted to excel. To develop her skills further and be exposed to more detailed work, Shané applied to work at McClure Refinishing. It was a decision that has paid off handsomely. McClure offers a broad range of body repair and painting services, including complete resprays, custom paintwork, and restorations, and encourages and supports staff to train and learn and develop their skills. That means Shané has done plenty of interesting work already.
Shané’s journey to becoming a painting apprentice started when she got a part-time job at a local Autobarn store. At the time, she was still at school and unsure what direction to take and what career lay ahead of her, but the team at Autobarn were, like Shané, all interested in cars, and conversations about the industry made her realise that spray painting was something she would like to explore.
“I’D LOVE TO STAY WITH MCCLURE. THEY HAVE BEEN SO ACCOMMODATING TO ME, TAUGHT ME SO MUCH. AND I WANT TO TRAIN AND LEARN MORE, CONTINUE TO MAKE THE CUSTOMERS HAPPY, AND BE THE BEST I CAN BE.”
“Talking to the boys there helped me figure out what I wanted to do,” said Shané. “One of my colleagues there had been a spray painter and panel beater dual-trade, and he showed me some of the work he had done and all the work that he used to do, and I really enjoyed seeing those jobs go from start to finish.
“I thought if I am going to work on cars, I should do something that makes them look pretty!”
Once Shané had finished school, she started her search for a painting apprenticeship, eventually taking a position at
“The boss has had me doing a heap of different things. Even in my off time, if there is something I want to learn, he’ll teach me,” she said. “So I have done some custom jobs, line work, three-layer pearls, direct gloss. It’s great to be able to do that work. They treat me very well here!”
Being challenged and testing herself is one thing, but it is very rewarding, said Shané, seeing cars completed and returned to a factory-like finish.
“We do have a lot of resprays where its like a rusty old car, all the work gets put into it and it comes out looking brand new. That is very satisfying to see,” she said.
As she closes in on completing her trade, Shané’s thoughts about her career revolve around just being better and improving all the time –admirable goals indeed.
“I’d love to stay with McClure. They have been so accommodating to me, taught me so much,” she said. “And I want to train and learn more, continue to make the customers happy, and be the best I can be.”

APPRENTICESHIP:
MOTORCYCLE MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY
ANDREW SEED is the MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month for January 2025.
The 20-year-old is in the third year of his motorcycle mechanical technology apprenticeship and works at Top Two Motorcycles – a Yamaha and Honda dealership – in Warwick, 130km south-west of Brisbane.
A standout student and member of the Top Two team, Andrew is, according to his employer, ‘a sponge for mechanical knowledge’ and is ‘excelling in all his units both theoretically and practically’.
It’s a sentiment with which his MTA Institute trainer, Sol Layland, concurs.
“Andrew consistently displays exemplary performance in his studies and has shown a remarkable understanding of the subject matter,” said Sol in recommending Andrew for the Apprentice of the Month award. “His commitment to excellence is evident in the timely completion and submission of his homework, often going above and beyond the required expectations. He demonstrates a thorough grasp of the curriculum and actively seeks opportunities to expand his knowledge.”
ANDREW IS, ACCORDING TO HIS EMPLOYER, ‘A SPONGE FOR MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE’ AND IS ‘EXCELLING IN ALL HIS UNITS BOTH THEORETICALLY AND PRACTICALLY.’
for Andrew, and in Year 11 of school he scored a week of work experience at Top Two Motorcycles. He loved the experience and subsequently applied for a position with the business.
Kicking off as an assistant while in Year 12, he went full time after graduation and then, after just a few weeks, was signed onto an apprenticeship.
At Top Two, Andrew and the team of three tradespeople and another apprentice are kept pretty busy working mainly on bikes, including quad bikes, that are used for agricultural purposes. Honda and Yamaha are the main brands, but many makes and models can find their way into the shop.
And the work is pretty varied, with Andrew, as a third-year apprentice, being trusted to do most jobs apart from some of the more complicated top-end rebuilds. Even then, Andrew is kept in the loop. As in many busy shops, Top Two’s experienced techs encourage apprentices to watch, learn and train as new and complex jobs appear.
While he is only 20 and still an apprentice, Andrew has a long history of working with, and on, motorcycles. A family involved in farming meant plenty of machinery for him to work on over the years and there were quite a few bikes amongst that equipment.
“They were always breaking on me, so I was always fixing them,” he said with a chuckle.
Becoming a motorcycle mechanic was a natural move
With a year or so to go before qualifying, Andrew said he had started to consider where his career might lead, although hisn thoughts on what that journey might be has changed as he gets deeper into his apprenticeship. He loves the Top Two workshop and being hands-on fixing bikes, and he suggested that he might need a bit more experience with the customer service side of things.
“When I first started, I was thinking about starting my own business one day, but I’m not too sure - I worry about dealing with customers sometimes,” he said. “. . . I know I’d be happy to stay here, build up my experience, learn more, and enjoy what I am doing.”

KELVIN MILLAR
INDUSTRY WORKFORCE ADVISOR
Program (IWA), I have been supporting many businesses address workforce and skills-related challenges. I have been fortunate enough to support dozens of automotive businesses over the past 12 months to develop, grow, and enjoy greater success.
One such business is M&R Auto Care of Sandgate. The business is owned and run by Michael Manzi, ably assisted by Office Manager Ash Stevens. I worked closely with Michael and Ash to examine their business practices and troubleshoot their human resource (HR) systems. It was a collaboration that has proven to be extremely successful.
"We were fortunate to connect with Kelvin, and it has been a game-changer for M & R Auto Care,” said Michael. “He provided an in-depth look at our business operations, helping us uncover areas we could improve and align with best practices.
“One of the standout benefits was being able to access a grant through the Department of Trade, Employment, and Training,” added Michael. “This funding allowed us to engage professional HR support, which has significantly elevated our business. We have been able to streamline and modernise our HR systems, creating clear job descriptions and updated employment contracts that strengthen our relationships with staff and apprentices. Additionally, the tailored HR training we received has helped our management team better understand their responsibilities and ensure compliance with current legislation.
“The changes we have implemented have been transformative. We now have a solid HR framework that complements our high standards of service and reputation in the community. This program has truly set us up for continued success, and we’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity."
Through the IWA program, I have access to Government grants, resources and experts to support automotive businesses improve their HR practices.
“THIS PROGRAM HAS TRULY SET US UP FOR CONTINUED SUCCESS, AND WE’RE INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY.”
Having access to the MTAQ Industrial Relations (IR) team allows me to connect businesses with expert technical advice and guidance. Many businesses have already benefited and been able to address difficult HR and IR-related challenges.
In addition, I have developed an automotive industryspecific workforce planning resource for all automotive businesses to access for free. This resource takes a smallbusiness owner through the process for developing strategies to help manage difficult staff recruitment and retention issues.
A hard-copy version can be attained by contacting me or any of our dedicated Area Managers. An interactive version of the resource is also available on the MTAQ website HERE.
I am pleased that through the IWA program I have already supported over 130 automotive businesses from metropolitan and regional Queensland thrive, and I look forward to continuing to provide services to the industry in 2025.
If you have any workforce or skilling needs that are currently not being effectively met, get in touch, I would be very happy to work with you on developing solutions for your business.
The Industry Workforce Advisor program is funded by the Queensland Government as part of the Good People, Good Jobs: Queensland Workforce Strategy 2022-2032.
THE MTA INSTITUTE is the largest independent provider of automotive apprenticeships and training in Queensland and has some 50 trainers delivering those programs to more than 3000 students across the state.
A vital part of the Institute’s (Registered Training Organisation (RTO) No. 31529) work is to ensure that its trainers are the best in the industry. To do so, the Institute brings all the trainers together twice each year for professional development of their own, ensuring the team are across not only the latest in technical developments and industry requirements with regards to training delivery, but that their own technical skills are sharp, on point, and up to date.
“The conference represents an opportunity to provide trainers with ongoing professional development
which positions them as confident and competent educators,” said Marcello Riotto, Director of the MTA Institute.
“With significant technological advancements presenting very rapidly, we’re committed to ensuring our trainers are, and continue to be, at the forefront of these technological changes.”
The agenda for December's trainers’ conference reflected the technological strides taken in the industry.
Topics covered electric vehicle technology; auto electrical technology; motorcycle and heavy vehicle systems; and body and refinishing technology; and there were demonstrations and workshops delivered by senior MTA Institute trainers
“THE CONFERENCE REPRESENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE TRAINERS WITH ONGOING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WHICH POSITIONS THEM AS CONFIDENT AND COMPETENT EDUCATORS.”
and experts from industry stakeholders including Isuzu, AusEV, Volvo, Foton, 3M, Axalta, and Hitachi.
The conference was, said Marcello, a very fruitful three days and, along with the professional development training, provided an invaluable opportunity for staff to come together and foster a sense of unity.
“The conference contributes to a robust organisational culture allowing everyone to share insights and experiences and be
a catalyst for strengthening relationships among staff members,” he said.
“While it fulfils the RTO’s regulatory obligations to provide professional development opportunities, we were also able to reinforce our commitment to quality and compliance while promoting a cohesive and supportive workplace culture that benefits both staff and learners alike.”
It is at the December conference that the MTA Institute recognises the talents of its trainers with the presentation of the Trainer of the Year award. The recipient of the 2024 award was Andrew Elson, with Antony Joslin and last year’s winner Gareth Hartley named in runners-up spots.
“THE SATISFACTION I GET FROM SEEING MY STUDENTS SUCCEED AND DO WELL IS EVERY BIT AS SATISFYING AS SEEING THEM SUCCEED AS MY EMPLOYEES - BUT WITHOUT THE STRESS RUNNING THE BUSINESS!”
Based in Queensland’s southeast region, Andrew delivers light vehicle, auto electrical, parts interpreting and outdoor power equipment apprenticeship training to around 50 students across an area that includes the Lockyer Valley and reaches out to Charleville and down to the NSW border.
A trainer with many years of experience in the automotive industry - including as the owner of his own workshop - Andrew originally trained as a technician with Telecom Australia in the 1980s. His passion had always been cars, however, and he shifted to automotive in 2000, starting a light vehicle apprenticeship at Toowoomba Springworks and training with the MTA Institute.
Within five years he had bought his own business – Toowoomba Engine Centre – and ran that business with his wife for much of the next 20 years.
It was towards the end of the period that Andrew began to think about how else he could be involved in the industry and, perhaps, share what he had learned with
the next generation of technicians.
“I had several apprentices over the years - who had used both TAFE and the MTA Institute as training organisations - and really enjoyed mentoring and working alongside the new generation of mechanics,” said Andrew.
“I never really took the time to check what the trainers were doing as I was so busy. However, eventually, I had a conversation with one of the Institute’s trainers – Zak Zuiderduin – about his job.
“This led to some thinking about life after being a workshop owner and my discussions with Zak, along with some I had with the local TAFE, confirmed for me this new career path I wanted to pursue.”
Joining the MTA Institute just three years ago, Andrew has found the work of a trainer to be challenging but extremely rewarding and said it was exciting to encourage the next generation of industry professionals to earn their trades and learn from his own experiences.
“The satisfaction I get from seeing my students succeed and do well is every bit as satisfying as seeing them succeed as my employees - but without the stress of running the business!” he said.
“I advise any young aspiring apprentices to jump in and have a go, take the opportunity to do some work experience, ask for advice and read/watch releases about new technology and remember we all started as apprentices. The changes to new powertrains, and enhancements in safety will happen, even in Australia.”
Being named as Trainer of the Year after just a short time with the Institute was, said Andrew, a great surprise, and he was proud to have his work recognised in such a way.
“Even just being named as a candidate was a shock and a huge feeling of accomplishment,” he said. “There are a lot of trainers dealing with similar issues with students, workplaces, compliance, travel, long hours and so on, so it was very flattering to be chosen as the trainer of the year.”
For the Institute - which has been expanding its team as the popularity of its training program grows - Andrew has been a most welcome addition to the organisation.
“HE IS A DESERVING RECIPIENT WHO GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND, AND WE’RE PRIVILEGED TO HAVE HIM IN OUR INDUSTRY AND REPRESENTING OUR ORGANISATION.”
“Andrew is fairly fresh out of industry but has taken to training like a duck to water,” said Marcello. “For context, the Trainer of the Year is determined by an aggregated voting system with nearly 20 internal staff contributing. These areas include training quality, compliance, accounts, marketing and communication, administration and management. Andrew has either met or exceeded all those internal metrics.
“He was recently appointed as the Regional Lead trainer for the Darling Downs and Southwest region, and he is doing a wonderful job supporting students, employers and trainers alike.
“He is a deserving recipient who goes above and beyond, and we’re privileged to have him in our industry and representing our organisation.”
WELL AS the MTA Institute Trainer of the Year award, other awards were presented in December to members of the MTA Queensland staff who delivered outstanding service to the Association and members through the year. Account Manager Rebeca McReight, who is based in Cairns, won the Individual Contributor award for her brilliant work during 2024, while Jade O’Shea, MTA Queensland’s Senior Marketing & Communications Coordinator won the Service Excellence award for her phenomenal work in promoting MTA Queensland and the MTA Institute.
NISSAN’S BOSSES MAY be busy trying to get to grips with the company’s future, but its engineers are still delivering interesting projects. And here’s something a little special they have cooked up – an electric version of the iconic Skyline R32 GT-R ‘Godzilla’ that stomped on all racing competitors during its dominance of Australian motorsport in the early 1990s.
Displayed as a one-off R32 EV conversion at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon in January, the R32 EV was created as a passion project by a small group of adventurous Nissan teammates in Japan, and the claim is that it is every bit as engaging and rewarding as the muscular R32 GT-R originals. Looking very much like its petrol-

powered counterpart, the R32 EV replaces the 2.6-litre twin-turbo engine with a pair of 160kW electric motors, each capable of delivering up to 340Nm. The rear seat is gone and in its place is a 62kWh battery.
Nissan says that although the R32 EV
is approximately 370kg heavier than the donor vehicle due to the battery pack and electrical components, engineers have tuned its output and torque to match the original R32 GT-R's torque-to-weight ratio.
The R32 EV also has an all-wheel drive system and the engineers are, Nissan says, working to tune the twin electric motors to match the benchmark set by the original vehicle. The R32 EV features a NISMO Sports suspension kit with Öhlins dampers.
Inside, the R32 EV features paddle shift functionality and a cabin speaker pipes in sound inspired by the original RB26DETT engine note. They’ve made an effort to replicate the sensation of manual gear shifts too, with Nissan’s team programming the sensation of shift shock into the paddle shift logic, simulating the brief jolt when engaging the clutch and shifting up or down through a mechanical gearbox.
To accommodate the larger discs and meatier calipers required to add stopping power to the heavier EV, Nissan’s team developed 18-inch wheels that closely resemble the 16-inch alloys fitted top the original.
Nissan says there are no plans to commercialist the R32 EV or offer a conversion kit, but we can hope!
