Dear Friends…

Welcome to Chile, it’s a pleasure for Metropolitan Touring to have you as our guests in this unique and amazing country. As a wise man once said: when god created the world he had a handful of everything left – mountains, deserts, lakes, rivers, glaciers – and he put all in his pocket. But there was a hole in this pocket you see, and as God walked across heaven it all trickled out, and the long trail it made on earth was Chile. Chile offers almost every type of landscapes for special interest tourism. From the haunting, windswept Atacama desert in the north to the ancient mysteries of Easter Island on your way to the End of the World: breathtaking Patagonia. Along the way, enjoy hiking in the Atacama Desert or fly fishing in some of the wildest Patagonian lakes and rivers. Visit some exclusive wineries or spa resorts. Dare to mountaineering in the Andes or enjoy a cruise along the fjords and glaciers to the mythical Cape Horn and Antarctica. Because Chile is one destination that has it all and much, much more. But tourism is, above all, a business of people, and our clients are the center and main purpose of everything we do; all our efforts go toward the satisfaction of their needs and requirements. Our personnel are deeply in love with Chile, and willing to share the wonders of our country with visitors from around the world. Our staff is constantly trained and motivated to improve their expertise; you will enjoy their enthusiasm and professionalism as much as we do. Let Chile touch your heart, as it has touched mine, and discover a magical and enchanting country anxious to share its best kept secrets.

Ski Snow has a privileged place in Chile due to the Andes. The excellent conditions of climate and altitude allow winter resorts to offer spacious slopes with stunning natural panoramas. Comfortable cabins, hotels, spas and thermal baths help make skiing in Chile hugely enjoyable.

Ski - The Central Andes

The snow quality in Portillo is excellent and is often likened to that of the Rocky Mountains. Skiers of all skill-levels find what they are looking for on the mountain and come back year after year for more adventure. RECOMMENDED: Ski Week at Portillo.

Portillo

Valle Nevado: White entertainment Valle Nevado offers access to the largest skiable domain in South America: nearly 7,000 acres. With such a vast amount of terrain the resort caters to all levels of skiers and snowboarders. Valle Nevado boasts 80% sunny days, but because of the resort’s high altitude and orientation the quality of Valle Nevado’s snow remains in optimum conditions. RECOMMENDED: Full Day Valle Nevado.

Wines Entertainment, education and adventure: that’s the way you live wine in Chile. Cutting-edge vineyards have turned Chile into a wine powerhouse, producing some of finest vintages in the new world. Explore the rolling hills, enjoy the adventure of learning about modern production techniques and, of course, taste the produce!

Colchagua Valley

Highlights Maipo Valley: Wines with history The Maipo Valley is best known for its well-balanced red wines. Alto Maipo reaches into the Andean foothills and produces some of Chile’s leading Cabernets. Central Maipo is one of the country’s oldest and most diverse productive regions, and Coastal Maipo — a relative newcomer — benefits from the cool maritime air currents that wash over and between the coastal mountains. RECOMMENDED: Full Day Maipo Valley. Maipo Valley

Casablanca Valley: Fun between vines Casablanca has always been a valley favoured for its fresh climate. The valley’s weather is directly influenced by the Humboldt Current which originates in Antarctica. Cold-weather grapes, in general, have greater acidity, a fresher fruit-bearing character, less alcoholic content and a striking aroma. The combination of cold and warmer weather tends to create a specific style of wine, in which the valley’s slow ripening process also plays a part, and which has led to no particular grape dominating. . RECOMMENDED: Full Day Casablanca & Valparaiso. Casablanca Valley

Cachapoal Valley: Different landscapes Just south of Santiago, the Cachapoal valley is Chile’s agricultural heartland and further divided into two winegrowing sectors. Cachapoal, the northernmost, is known primarily for red grapes. Cachapoal Alto stretches eastward into the Andean foothills and produces elegant, well-balanced Cabernets and red blends. Farther west toward the Coastal Mountains, the Peumo sector receives just enough cool maritime influence to create a warm, but not hot climate ideal for the area’s renowned, full-bodied, fruit-forward Carmenére. Cachapoal Valley

RECOMMENDED: Full Day Cachapoal.

Colchagua Valley: Infinite activities The Colchagua Valley’s shape and fertility was decided by the beautiful River Tinguiririca, which runs from the Andes to the Pacific Ocean to the west. One of Chile’s best-known wine regions, it has earned great praise for its full-bodied Cabernet, Carménère, Syrah and Malbec vintages, and its wines regularly appear high on the world’s lists of leading wines. RECOMMENDED: Colchagua Overnight Tour.

Colchagua Valley

Lakes & Volcanoes A land of blues and greens, of granite greys and windswept whites. The south of Chile is an artist’s palette of colors and an explorer’s dream of excellent infrastructure making for easy exploration from a number of springboard towns – so it only takes a while to get away, to the lakes, to the mountains, to the realm of the condor.

Lonquimay Volcano

Lakes & Volcanoes: General Information The river Bio Bio is an historical boundary between the Mapuche Indians and the Spaniards. Prior to the arrival of the Spaniards, the territory of the Mapuche Indians extended further to the north. After being forced to move south, they successfully resisted further withdrawal at Bio Bio. Since that time, this boundary has marked the beginning of southern Chile. This is also the point where the Chilean landscape begins to change. The intense green of trees and forest overtakes the landscape and dominates the horizon. Over time, the native culture grew accustomed to living alongside Europeans, and settled freely through the zone, including the island of Chiloe.

How to get there? To this area you may fly to Temuco, Valdivia or Puerto Montt and then drive to Pucon or Puerto Varas. You also have excellent roads and overnight busses that can get you to the desire destination.

When to go? The climate doesn’t vary too much trough the year, being this a zone of thermal baths all year round is appropriate to visit. The ski season opens in July and ends almost in October; during the months of January & February a lot of activities occur in different locations. Rain is always present in this area, they even have a Rain Festival.

What to bring? You will need light clothes for the summer and a warm outfit for the winter. Always try to be comfortable, wear a hat and sun block and don’t forget your camera; Snow capped volcanoes scatter the landscape.

Patagonia: General Information It is believed that the term "Patagon" had its origin in the Spanish navigators whom, at San Julian (Argentina), thought the native hunters had big feet (which is not true). Gradually it has been prevailing the logical interpretation that the term comes from the giant PATAGON, a character from "Primaleon", a cavalry novel to which captain Fernando (Hernando) de Magallanes was very keen. When he met the first aborigine at San Julian, he saw him as frightening as the novel character and called him "Patagon", and the Land of Patagons or just Patagonia…

How to get there? Fly from Santiago or Puerto Montt directly to Balmaceda or Punta Arenas. From Puerto Montt there are ferrys that depart to different areas of the Chilean Patagonia.

When to go? Every season has its own touch; at winter the landscapes are just amazing and maybe you can see some Pumas. Autumn is stunning with its colors and sunsets; Spring is the re-birth for many species and being able to feel that energy is amazing. At Summer the climate is perfect for practicing outdoor activities.

What to bring? You will need a warm outfit to cover from the wind and maybe be prepared for some rain. Always try to be comfortable; trekking shoes are a must in this area. Wear a hat and sun block and don’t forget your camera; Patagonia is always magnificent.

The Austral Road During most of the twentieth century, the territory of Aysen was only accessible by boat and aircraft, the only form of communication by land with the rest of the region involved crossing territory to Argentina. More than 10,000 soldiers worked in one of the most expensive and difficult engineering projects undertaken in Chile, mainly due to the existence of some glaciers and fjords that complicated the path. We believe the best way to discover this hidden treasure is by embarking on a magical Self-drive Travesía. Discover Aysen at your own pace and be captivated by its people and its natural beauty. Islands For a country with as much coastline as Chile, it boasts thousands of islands and islets, from the northern deserts to the tip of the American continent in the south. They come in all shapes and sizes, but all have one thing in common: history, nature and exceptional beauty. Every island has its own characteristics. Some are completely uninhabited. Others have been the nucleus of particular cultures. Others are found southern end.

Easter Island @ Los tres Motus

Easter Island Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, is the farthest island from any populated land on the planet. It has been a place full of attraction and mystery ever since its discovery. Located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a distance of 3,700km from the coast of South America, Rapa Nui is a great volcanic cone that was pushed up from the ocean floor to 500 meters above sea level. This tiny triangle of land, that measures just 166 square km, was the birthplace of a fascinating civilization, of which the moai – giant statues sculpted from rock – play silent witness to this history.

RECOMMENDED: Churches of Chiloe Program Churches

Gastronomy: El Curanto This typical dish characterizes the island of Chiloé, the territory in which the Chono people lived. Currently the Williche communities still mantain their traditions and have been able to diffuse this dish throughout Patagonia. The word comes from the Mapudungun “curantü”, which means "stone heated by the sun." It should be prepared in a pit, in contact with Mother Earth, the hot stones, and waterproof sheets of nalca, which allow steam cooking, sealing the ingredients. It uses varieties of seafood, potatoes and other native ingredients to flavor this incredible dish preparation that at the end it becomes a social event. Cape Horn: The End of the World Cape Horn Island is the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago of southern Chile. The flora in the park is dominated by the presence of the formation of tubers and cold desert of Cabo de Hornos, with a landscape that is characterized to have a universal substitute of the small mosses and lichens that gave origin to the denominated “tourism with magnifying glass” in the park. The National Park is an important nesting point to the Magellan’s and Antarctic penguin, also providing habitat of an important number of marine mammals and marine birds. Carlos III Island: Whale´s Paradise From the condor, dominating the heights, to the penguins that nest in the islands, a considerable number of different bird species populate the area. Marine mammals are widely represented by sea lions, dolphins, occasionally orcas and, of course, humpback whales. Under seas life is rich enough to feed these marine giants which have been using this place as a feeding ground for centuries. Vegetation grows in spite of violent winds and hard weather conditions; nevertheless, a formidable vegetal life develops on the surface. Social Responsibility… The conservation of this peculiar environment is not only a government´s issue and concern; in fact is everyone’s task. This idea motivated MT Chile to create a special fund specifically intended to support the local communities and to finance projects that are directly related with the conservation of endangered species and sustainable tourism projects. Some projects we have created: - Kerosene stoves delivered to Bucalemu, a small fishing village that was strongly affected by the earthquake of February 2010. - Education & Training with the Cousteau foundation, the Government of Chile & other business to sustainable entrepreneurs. The environmental impact of human activities on the fragile ecosystems is gravely negative if neglected or improperly handled; that is why we ask you to take care of nature, its up to you to preserve nature for the children of your children. You can help! For more information please contact your guide or directly to: chile@metropolitan-touring.com.
